- 1:50Speaker 3: It was Thursday, October sixteenth, was cloudy in Los Angeles.
- 1:53Speaker 3: We were working a night watch out of homicide detail.
- 1:56Speaker 3: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss's Captain Lorman. My name's Friday.
- 1:59Speaker 3: It was nine eight pm when I got to Georgia
- 2:01Speaker 3: Street Receiving Hospital.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Doctor Hall's office. Joe, how are you hi, Doc? How
- 2:06Speaker 4: about that key she got in from seventh reunion? How
- 2:08Speaker 4: she doing? She died about five minutes ago. Oh, I'll
- 2:10Speaker 4: fill me in. What you got on? You talk to
- 2:12Speaker 4: the radio car officers ones and handle the call.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Frank's talking to him now in the lobby. Thought i'd
- 2:16Speaker 3: check in with you while he was handling that end.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Not an awful lot to tell you, Joe. Ambulance g
- 2:19Speaker 5: too brought her in from the location. She was alive
- 2:21Speaker 5: when they brought her in. Did everything I could for
- 2:23Speaker 5: it didn't help much. Too far gone.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Now. What's it look like?
- 2:26Speaker 5: Chloroform poisoning? Pretty obvious, probably self administered. Looks like that anyway,
- 2:30Speaker 5: she didn't last long. It's a little unusual, huh. Chloroform, Yeah,
- 2:33Speaker 5: under the circumstances, it sure is anything else.
- 2:35Speaker 4: How do you mean, well, any probable causes, any marks
- 2:37Speaker 4: on her?
- 2:38Speaker 5: No, a little scratch on her wrist. That's about all
- 2:40Speaker 5: where you got her? Now can we look at her?
- 2:42Speaker 4: Yeah? Back number three, come on high Ed Barrett called us,
- 2:48Speaker 4: ask us for help. It's a rough night. Huh.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Yeah, traffic went crazy to night. A dozen cases in
- 2:53Speaker 5: the last two hours, a couple of homicides. Too busy night.
- 2:57Speaker 4: You got the weekend coming up there, Yeah, not looking
- 2:59Speaker 4: forward to her. Here we go all right here? Yeah, chloroform,
- 3:05Speaker 4: sure hangs on in it, sure strong. No, it's the
- 3:09Speaker 4: burns around her mouth and nose. This coloration, Well, who
- 3:13Speaker 4: is she? Any idea?
- 3:13Speaker 5: We got her down as Jane Doe. You're gonna have
- 3:15Speaker 5: to take it from there. Understand the radio car officers
- 3:17Speaker 5: couldn't identify her.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Apparently pretty well off. Uh. Nice clothes, seems to be
- 3:21Speaker 4: well captain, I'd say so. Expensive jewelry there, rings, wristwatch.
- 3:25Speaker 3: A little strange for a probable suicide, isn't It looks
- 3:29Speaker 3: like you took good care of herself. Hair all done up,
- 3:31Speaker 3: fingernails abot, How old would you say?
- 3:33Speaker 4: Not more than thirty five? It's about that. Here's the
- 3:36Speaker 4: chart on.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Time arrival nine thirty eight pm from southwest corner seventh
- 3:41Speaker 5: in Union, vacant lot. Reason for call possible drunk woman
- 3:44Speaker 5: down Jane Doe number four, female Caucasian, approximate age thirty five,
- 3:49Speaker 5: wait one twenty eight and one quarter high, five foot four,
- 3:52Speaker 5: brown hair, hazel eyes, listed as Nordic descent.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Probable suicide. That's it, okay, Doc, thanks? I better look
- 3:58Speaker 3: up Frank. See what he's got now.
- 4:00Speaker 5: King, I haven't notified the carman yet. You fellows want
- 4:04Speaker 5: to take care of that?
- 4:04Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 4:04Speaker 3: Sure, it will call her about all we can do
- 4:06Speaker 3: unless we find some relatives to notify her.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Joe, Yeah, Frank? Oh hi, Jock, Oh yeah, Frank, looks
- 4:11Speaker 4: like you're losing to weight. Yeah. Four pods in two weeks.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Not too bad for me anyway. What'd you get yo?
- 4:16Speaker 3: Chloroform poisoning, probably suicide. Find out who she is.
- 4:19Speaker 5: I gotta get back to my office. If there's anything
- 4:21Speaker 5: I can help you with, come on back.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You're right, Doc, thanks very much. Okay, how about it?
- 4:25Speaker 4: Any identification? No? I talked to the fellaws who took
- 4:27Speaker 4: the call you at one A two. It was a
- 4:28Speaker 4: routine call. Three ninety w down.
- 4:30Speaker 5: They couldn't find out to put the call in said
- 4:32Speaker 5: they found her in a vacant lot, lying.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Over against the side of the building. Yeah, they said,
- 4:36Speaker 4: she looked like she'd been drinking.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Then I got away with the chloroform and they found
- 4:39Speaker 3: the empty container by her shide. Yeah, yeah, ties in
- 4:43Speaker 3: they were careful handling it.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Anything else well, while they're waiting for the ambulance, they
- 4:47Speaker 5: talked to some of the people in the neighborhood. They
- 4:49Speaker 5: couldn't tell the mem anything about the woman. Building they
- 4:50Speaker 5: found her next to it was a vacant store. No
- 4:52Speaker 5: identification on her at all, no nothing, no purse or wallet.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I checked missing persons.
- 4:56Speaker 3: No one of her description reported fellas who handled the car,
- 4:59Speaker 3: so they went over her clothes. No marks of identification.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Better notify latent princes. H maybe they can identify it.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I already called him, Joe. Looks like the probos suicide.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Sure a new twist. The chloroform room doesn't figured it out.
- 5:10Speaker 4: What are you think? I don't know.
- 5:11Speaker 3: No violence committed on the body, no indication of robbery.
- 5:14Speaker 3: She had a risk watch on rings too.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Wouldn't figure anyway. Chloroform angle, no other physical evidence out there.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I mean, besides the cloroform containing nothing else besides the handkerchief.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Yeah, plain white handkerchief, chloroform on it. They fought it
- 5:25Speaker 5: next to the body. So the only thing that doesn't
- 5:27Speaker 5: fit one hundred percent, what do you mean it's a
- 5:29Speaker 5: man's handkerchief.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Ten twenty five pm, Frank and I took the dead
- 5:35Speaker 3: woman's clothing, the handkerchief, and the almost empty container of
- 5:38Speaker 3: chloroform and drove back downtown.
- 5:40Speaker 4: To the office.
- 5:41Speaker 3: We dropped off the clothing and the handkerchief at the
- 5:43Speaker 3: crime lab to be processed for possible identifying marks. The
- 5:46Speaker 3: chloroform container was taken to Latent Fingerprints for examination. The
- 5:50Speaker 3: following morning, the body of the unidentified woman was taken
- 5:53Speaker 3: to the county morgue for posting. As soon as the
- 5:56Speaker 3: dead woman's prints were made available to us, they were
- 5:58Speaker 3: checked through our record bureau and also the record bureau
- 6:00Speaker 3: at the Sheriff's office. In addition, they also made a
- 6:03Speaker 3: run on her description. They were unable to identify her.
- 6:06Speaker 3: We checked with a crime lab, but they couldn't help
- 6:08Speaker 3: us either. A detailed examination of the dead woman's clothing
- 6:11Speaker 3: failed to yield any leads. As to her identity. Layton
- 6:14Speaker 3: Prince didn't have any better luck with the chloroform container.
- 6:17Speaker 3: The only prints they found on it were those of
- 6:19Speaker 3: the dead women. Meantime, the Morning Papers had picked up
- 6:22Speaker 3: the story and given it front page billing eleven sixteen am.
- 6:27Speaker 5: How's that again, Doc? Yeah, I see a little unusual,
- 6:33Speaker 5: won't you say?
- 6:35Speaker 4: Yeah? Okay, we'll pick it up after lunch, right, goodbye? Anything?
- 6:40Speaker 5: Yeah, doc Cephalo. The morgue just finished closing the body.
- 6:42Speaker 5: What'd you say? The chloroform killed her. They even found
- 6:44Speaker 5: traces of it in the stomach.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Huh.
- 6:46Speaker 3: That's right, so weird within it doesn't leave much doubt suicide.
- 6:50Speaker 4: No indication was anything else is there? So I got it?
- 6:55Speaker 3: I'm a side Friday talking, Yes, sir, Yeah Mitchell, that's
- 7:03Speaker 3: so Yeah, sure be glad to Yeah, we'll be here.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Do you want to give us your address? Hello? Here
- 7:10Speaker 4: we go. I was it Joe.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Somebody the name of James Mitchell. He's on his way
- 7:13Speaker 3: down to see us. Wants to talk to us about
- 7:15Speaker 3: the dead woman. Yeah, he says he killed her. Eleven
- 7:21Speaker 3: fifty am. While Frank and I waited around for Mitchell
- 7:24Speaker 3: to show up, we checked his name through our and I,
- 7:26Speaker 3: but we were unable to find anything on him. A
- 7:28Speaker 3: few minutes before one pm, a short, blonde haired man
- 7:31Speaker 3: in a blue serge suit entered the squadron and asked
- 7:33Speaker 3: for us. He introduced himself as James Mitchell. Frank and
- 7:36Speaker 3: I took him to the interrogation room, where we started
- 7:38Speaker 3: to question him. He told us he was a steel
- 7:41Speaker 3: worker by trade, currently unemployed. He said he was originally
- 7:44Speaker 3: from Alabama, that he'd been in California for approximately two years.
- 7:48Speaker 3: After that, he lapsed into silence. We tried to question
- 7:50Speaker 3: him about the dead woman, but we made little headway.
- 7:53Speaker 3: The only admission we could get from him was that
- 7:55Speaker 3: he killed the woman. Outside of that, he refused to
- 7:57Speaker 3: say anything.
- 7:58Speaker 5: How about it, Mitchell, what's the truck? You called us
- 8:01Speaker 5: a voluntary to confession? You said you killed the woman.
- 8:03Speaker 5: You want to tell us a story, and I whytn't
- 8:04Speaker 5: answer her questions?
- 8:06Speaker 4: Jim? How about it? Aren't you feeling well? Want us
- 8:10Speaker 4: to call a doctor? Jim?
- 8:13Speaker 5: You're given as much of an otmistery. You volunteer to
- 8:15Speaker 5: make yourself a suspect, and this thing you say, you
- 8:17Speaker 5: kill the woman? I wantn't answer the questions.
- 8:21Speaker 4: We can't keep this up forever. You ought to know that.
- 8:23Speaker 4: You haven't answered the question almost an hour. Now. Look,
- 8:26Speaker 4: if you're not gonna talk to Jim, there's only one
- 8:28Speaker 4: thing we can do. We're gonna have to book you, Mitchell,
- 8:32Speaker 4: not what you want.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Go ahead and book me. I killed her, Go and
- 8:34Speaker 6: book me.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Well, why can't you tell us the story? Now? You
- 8:37Speaker 4: admit you killed the woman? Why won't you tell us
- 8:39Speaker 4: about it?
- 8:39Speaker 6: Why should I? I killed her? That's all you have
- 8:42Speaker 6: to know.
- 8:42Speaker 3: You sat on the phone, you tell us the whole story.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Didn't you know what made you change your mind?
- 8:46Speaker 6: You got the story? I killed her whole ass too.
- 8:49Speaker 4: You know better than that, Mitchell. You know the woman
- 8:51Speaker 4: very well, No, not very well. What was your name? Mary? Mary?
- 8:56Speaker 7: What?
- 8:58Speaker 4: Mary?
- 8:58Speaker 6: That's all?
- 8:58Speaker 8: I met her in a bar. I didn't know. Well,
- 9:01Speaker 8: I killed her, That's all you got to know.
- 9:03Speaker 4: I had to. Why'd you have to? Jim?
- 9:05Speaker 8: I don't have to tell you I had a reason,
- 9:08Speaker 8: good reason, robbery. I don't have to say you have
- 9:12Speaker 8: a fight with her lover's quarrel? Maybe what's the difference.
- 9:16Speaker 4: On this bar where you met Mary? Not in downtown La?
- 9:19Speaker 8: Was it yes, downtown. She had it coming. I'm glad
- 9:23Speaker 8: I did it. Not worth much h she was when
- 9:25Speaker 8: I met her? Or what happened? She'd go out the
- 9:27Speaker 8: deep end?
- 9:28Speaker 4: Guess?
- 9:28Speaker 6: So what's the difference.
- 9:30Speaker 4: She's dead? But why'd you turn yourself in, Jim? Or
- 9:33Speaker 4: you couldn't beat it? Maybe?
- 9:35Speaker 8: How do you mean I could have stayed out of
- 9:37Speaker 8: your way if I wanted to for a while anyway,
- 9:40Speaker 8: I didn't want to.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Why not, Jim? Good reason.
- 9:43Speaker 6: I'm glad I killed her. She had it coming. I
- 9:46Speaker 6: go ahead and do what you want. I know what
- 9:47Speaker 6: the rap is.
- 9:48Speaker 4: I'll pay for it.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Well, if you're willing to take the rap, Jim, when
- 9:50Speaker 3: I tell us the whole story, Huh, you got the story?
- 9:52Speaker 6: I killed that.
- 9:53Speaker 4: It's all you need.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Don't you want to brief us in on the details?
- 9:56Speaker 3: How it happened, how it came about? Might be extenuating circumstances.
- 9:59Speaker 5: You can't well, well, how you mean different things that
- 10:02Speaker 5: might throw a new slant on the case. Of course,
- 10:03Speaker 5: are not gonna hand down a decision until they got
- 10:05Speaker 5: the whole story.
- 10:06Speaker 6: You mean about Mary.
- 10:08Speaker 8: I'll never tell him about her loves of things she
- 10:10Speaker 8: did to me, Never tell anybody about it.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Must have been pretty bad, huh. I mean the way
- 10:14Speaker 3: you took it out on me, shoes rotting all the
- 10:17Speaker 3: way through. I had to kill her. Well, what happened
- 10:19Speaker 3: with the chloroform, Jim? Didn't work fast enough for you?
- 10:22Speaker 3: Chloroform yeah, huh.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Didn't react on her fast enough for you? No, No,
- 10:26Speaker 4: it didn't.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I hated her, Yeah, I guess she did. Must have
- 10:31Speaker 3: had quite a scrap with her. Struggled quite a bit,
- 10:33Speaker 3: then't you.
- 10:33Speaker 8: And she fought me all the way I got her though.
- 10:36Speaker 8: I hated her out of my mind. I hated her
- 10:38Speaker 8: so much.
- 10:39Speaker 4: We've been trying to figure it out. Jim. What'd you
- 10:41Speaker 4: hit her with? I mean around the head and on
- 10:43Speaker 4: the neck. Would you use piece of metal?
- 10:45Speaker 6: Yeah? Angle line?
- 10:46Speaker 4: Uh huh.
- 10:47Speaker 6: Kind of lost my head. I kept beating her.
- 10:49Speaker 8: She tried to scream, but I had my hand over
- 10:51Speaker 8: her mouth, and then she fell down. She'd make a
- 10:53Speaker 8: sound after that.
- 10:54Speaker 4: I see. Well, how come you took her jewelry?
- 10:57Speaker 3: I mean, if you just wanted to kill her, house
- 10:58Speaker 3: that you took all her valuables too, Jim?
- 11:02Speaker 8: How about it, Mitchell, Well, I don't know, uh, spur
- 11:05Speaker 8: of the moment, I guess I took him, but I
- 11:07Speaker 8: didn't keep my thumb away.
- 11:09Speaker 4: I don't remember where glad it cho heem?
- 11:12Speaker 3: Alright, Jim, No, what's this all about. You didn't kill
- 11:16Speaker 3: that woman? You know that as well as we do.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Well we are you talking about? Of course I killed her?
- 11:19Speaker 6: She's dead, ain't you how many times I have to
- 11:21Speaker 6: admit it?
- 11:21Speaker 5: The woman had one mark and everybody met you a
- 11:23Speaker 5: little small scratch on the rest. Huh had a single
- 11:25Speaker 5: wound on the head, not on the neck either.
- 11:27Speaker 6: Well, I killed her, That's all you got to know.
- 11:29Speaker 6: Not said anything there.
- 11:30Speaker 4: All the women's valuables weren't taking either, Jim.
- 11:32Speaker 3: She was found with a couple of rings on her hands,
- 11:34Speaker 3: an expensive watch, a bracelet too. I come on, Jim,
- 11:37Speaker 3: what's the angle here? You can't prove I didn't do it.
- 11:40Speaker 3: You can't prove that. I think we can now.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Why can't you just take my word for it's queer
- 11:44Speaker 6: set up I ever saw.
- 11:46Speaker 8: I'm willing to admit I killed her, and you won't
- 11:47Speaker 8: believe me. What kind of cops saw you?
- 11:49Speaker 4: Anyway? What'd you spend last night? Jim? Where were you?
- 11:52Speaker 4: I don't know, I don't remember you'll remember. Now, how
- 11:54Speaker 4: about it?
- 11:55Speaker 8: I say, queer set up. I saw a whole town.
- 11:58Speaker 8: You wouldn't believe it. Yeah, look, I come here from Alabama.
- 12:01Speaker 8: I told you that. I've been here for twenty two months,
- 12:03Speaker 8: a long time. It's almost two years, Queerstown. I ever
- 12:06Speaker 8: saw thousands of people all over millions of 'em, people
- 12:09Speaker 8: all around you, all over the place, everywhere you go.
- 12:12Speaker 8: I didn't know any of'em, not a one. They didn't
- 12:15Speaker 8: know me twenty two months. Couldn't get to know nobody.
- 12:17Speaker 8: I still don't. They don't know me either, or tried
- 12:21Speaker 8: to get acquainted, just seemed to never could. Nobody knew me,
- 12:24Speaker 8: nobody cared it, didn't even know who I was. What
- 12:28Speaker 8: kind of town is that? Twenty two months right here?
- 12:30Speaker 8: They don't even know who I am. Nobody knows. Living alone,
- 12:32Speaker 8: you just.
- 12:32Speaker 6: Get sick of it, get sick and tired of it.
- 12:35Speaker 4: That's what brought all this on. Huh.
- 12:37Speaker 8: Well, I mean, at least they'll notice me. They don't
- 12:38Speaker 8: know I'm here. I killed a woman. They'll know who
- 12:40Speaker 8: I am now.
- 12:41Speaker 4: They ever spent any time in a hospital mentioned institution?
- 12:45Speaker 8: Now, what'd you have to ask that for? Just cause
- 12:47Speaker 8: they want to know people wanted to notice me. That
- 12:49Speaker 8: doesn't make me crazy. Can't be alone all the time.
- 12:52Speaker 8: You got to have somebody notice you. Were you ever
- 12:54Speaker 8: in an institution gym? Just once, only a couple of months.
- 12:59Speaker 8: It wasn't anything. Look, can't you just forget what I said?
- 13:02Speaker 8: I mean, I told y'all killed a woman. The paper's
- 13:04Speaker 8: going to be out pretty soon, pictures and things, probably a.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Big right up man.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Well, can't we let it go with that? I killed it?
- 13:09Speaker 6: Just forget the rest.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I'm afraid not. Why not?
- 13:13Speaker 8: We'll just make out it that way. People get to
- 13:15Speaker 8: know me anyway. At least they'll know I'm around. I
- 13:17Speaker 8: won't be alone.
- 13:18Speaker 4: No, you're just worrying, Jimma, Huh, he won't be alone anymore.
- 13:24Speaker 3: One thirty eight pm, we continued to question the self
- 13:27Speaker 3: accused suspect, James Mitchell, and he finally told us that
- 13:29Speaker 3: he'd been confined for a period of eighteen months in
- 13:32Speaker 3: a state metal hospital in Alabama that had been more
- 13:35Speaker 3: than three years before. The questioning also left no doubt
- 13:38Speaker 3: in our mind that Mitchell had nothing at all to
- 13:40Speaker 3: do with the death of the unidentified woman. A sister
- 13:43Speaker 3: of Mitchell's living in Alabama was contacted and she agreed
- 13:46Speaker 3: to come out west as soon as possible to look
- 13:48Speaker 3: after her brother. In the meantime, he was delivered to
- 13:51Speaker 3: the care of psychiatrist at the county hospital. The incident
- 13:54Speaker 3: of a man confessing guild of a crime of which
- 13:56Speaker 3: he's wholly innocent certainly wasn't anything new. Like police officers
- 14:00Speaker 3: all over the country, all over the world, we've come
- 14:02Speaker 3: to accept it as almost a routine part of a
- 14:04Speaker 3: criminal investigation. Most of the time that would be criminals
- 14:07Speaker 3: suffering with metal trouble. Sometimes it's a thirst for notoriety.
- 14:11Speaker 3: In any event, they all have to be checked, every
- 14:13Speaker 3: one of them. It means time, trouble and money. Hours
- 14:16Speaker 3: of cautious interrogation, more hours of checking stories that have
- 14:20Speaker 3: basis only in the imagination of a sick mind. They
- 14:23Speaker 3: slow the investigation, They waste hundreds of man hours. But
- 14:27Speaker 3: like anonymous leads or would be witnesses, they can't be ignored.
- 14:30Speaker 4: It's part of the job.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Saturday, October eighteenth, the newspapers continue to cooperate by giving
- 14:36Speaker 3: his front page space to the story of the unidentified woman.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Joe Yeah, I to do nothing identification was even close.
- 14:44Speaker 4: How about Brian Lopez, whether they do or not call
- 14:46Speaker 4: it theirs?
- 14:46Speaker 3: Well, they're over at the morg now with a boy,
- 14:48Speaker 3: sixteen year old kid was pretty wrought up when he
- 14:50Speaker 3: came in.
- 14:50Speaker 4: We sure had a parade of them all last night
- 14:53Speaker 4: all this morning. Well, it doesn't hurt our chances any
- 14:55Speaker 4: The more the better, I suppose. So I'm not going
- 14:57Speaker 4: to make much headway if we can't identify her. And
- 15:00Speaker 4: he asks on the all points we got out on, Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 4: four of them. They all been checked. Nothing chewing gum,
- 15:05Speaker 4: Joe new Kai and tanzarine flavor. No, no thanks.
- 15:09Speaker 5: How about that check of the hospitals around tom anything
- 15:12Speaker 5: show up there yet?
- 15:12Speaker 4: No, not so far.
- 15:13Speaker 3: The scar on the woman's leg was from an operation,
- 15:15Speaker 3: all right, Doc figures it might not have been done
- 15:17Speaker 3: in the hospital though it was a minor operation.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Could have been done a doctor's office. Maybe I'd stop it.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Sure tough enough.
- 15:23Speaker 5: Checking hospitals for a record of the operation next time, impossible,
- 15:26Speaker 5: check every doctor in town for it.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Well, even then we could miss. Don't know where the
- 15:29Speaker 3: woman's from. She could have had the operation done anywhere.
- 15:32Speaker 4: I'll get it. Homicide Friday talking yeah, Tom, Well I
- 15:38Speaker 4: know he did. That's so yeah, okay, fine, you're bad.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Thanks Tom.
- 15:45Speaker 3: It was Brian I and LOPEI were driving that boy
- 15:48Speaker 3: over to Georgia Street the sixteen year old. What happened
- 15:50Speaker 3: When they took the boy to the morgue, they showed
- 15:51Speaker 3: him the body.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Asked him if he recognized it, What you say? It's
- 15:54Speaker 4: his mother?
- 15:59Speaker 3: Two o five Frank and I left the office and
- 16:01Speaker 3: drove over to Georgia Street Receiving Hospital. The sixteen year
- 16:04Speaker 3: old boy, who had identified the dead woman as his mother,
- 16:07Speaker 3: was being treated for shock and hysteria. The youngster told
- 16:10Speaker 3: Brian and Lopez that his name was Arnold Hopkins and
- 16:13Speaker 3: that he'd been living with his mother at a Norwood
- 16:15Speaker 3: Street address. After he was given a sedative and recovered
- 16:18Speaker 3: himself a bit, the boy was driven to the home
- 16:20Speaker 3: of his aunt and uncle out near Barnesdale Park. That night,
- 16:23Speaker 3: Frank and I called on the boy and found him
- 16:25Speaker 3: sufficiently recovered to answer a few questions. He confirmed his
- 16:28Speaker 3: identity of the body he'd viewed that afternoon as that
- 16:30Speaker 3: of his mother, missus Jeanette Hopkins. He said he was
- 16:33Speaker 3: an only child and that his father was dead. He
- 16:36Speaker 3: told us his mother had been working for the past
- 16:38Speaker 3: six years as coast representative for an Eastern cosmetics firm.
- 16:41Speaker 4: We asked him what had happened the night his mother disappeared.
- 16:44Speaker 7: The phone just rang about. Well, when we were finishing dinner,
- 16:47Speaker 7: about eight o'clock, maybe quarter after m h. Well, when
- 16:50Speaker 7: while hung up, she said something important come up. She
- 16:52Speaker 7: had to go out to see somebody. She said she
- 16:54Speaker 7: had to see him right away. She got a coat
- 16:56Speaker 7: and left. This last time, I said, are well, who.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Was she going to see? Arnold? Did she tell you? No?
- 17:03Speaker 4: She didn't.
- 17:04Speaker 7: I heard her talking on the phone though, heard her
- 17:06Speaker 7: say Leo. She said it a couple of times, Leo.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Where was she going to meet this person? Arnold? Did
- 17:11Speaker 4: you have to overhear that?
- 17:12Speaker 6: No?
- 17:12Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 17:13Speaker 7: I think she said, okay, I'll meet you there Leo.
- 17:16Speaker 7: And she hung up, and she got her coat, kissed
- 17:18Speaker 7: me goodbye, and she went out.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Did she leave on foot or was she driving? You remember?
- 17:21Speaker 7: Oh?
- 17:21Speaker 4: On foot? My mother didn't drive. It was Leo. So
- 17:24Speaker 4: your mother ever talk about him?
- 17:25Speaker 7: Heard her talking to him on the phone a couple
- 17:27Speaker 7: of times. That's about all.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Well, do you know where he lives? What he looks like.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Can he tells anything about him at all?
- 17:31Speaker 7: No, sir, nothing. I wouldn't know him if I saw him.
- 17:45Speaker 2: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 17:48Speaker 2: force in action.
- 17:49Speaker 1: The only way you can prove to yourself that Fatima
- 17:53Speaker 1: is the best of all kings size cigarettes is to
- 17:56Speaker 1: compare them with the brand you've been smoking.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Yes, compare Fatima I would any other King size cigarette.
- 18:01Speaker 1: One Fatima's length filters the smoke eighty five millimeters for
- 18:06Speaker 1: your protection.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Two Fatima's length cools the smoke for your protection.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Three Fatima's length gives you those extra puffs twenty one
- 18:14Speaker 1: percent longer than standard cigarette size.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Your money packed plus postage. If you are not convinced
- 18:20Speaker 2: Fatima is better than your present king size cigarette.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Just return the pack in the unsmoked Fatimas. By August first,
- 18:27Speaker 1: nineteen fifty two, Fatima Box thirty seven, New York One.
- 18:32Speaker 2: More and more of your friends are switching to king
- 18:34Speaker 2: size Fatimas every day.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Compare them yourself. Tomorrow, buy Fatima in the bright sunny
- 18:41Speaker 1: yellow pack and enjoy the added protection of Fatima quality.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Saturday, October eighteenth, eight thirty pm. Frank Smith and I
- 18:57Speaker 3: continued interviewing the dead woman's son, sixteen year old Ernold Hopkins.
- 19:01Speaker 3: The big lead pointed in the direction of the man
- 19:03Speaker 3: known as Leo, who telephoned Missus Hopkins Thursday night, little
- 19:06Speaker 3: more than an hour before she died, and made an
- 19:08Speaker 3: appointment to meet her. It was a good lead, but
- 19:10Speaker 3: it didn't go too far. All the boy could tell
- 19:13Speaker 3: us was that.
- 19:13Speaker 4: The man's name was Leo.
- 19:15Speaker 3: He'd heard his mother address a man by that name
- 19:17Speaker 3: on the telephone several times, but that was the extent
- 19:19Speaker 3: of it. He didn't know Leo's last name. He didn't
- 19:22Speaker 3: know where he lived. He had no idea where his
- 19:23Speaker 3: mother was to meet the man the night she died.
- 19:26Speaker 3: We talked to the boy's aunt and uncle, the dead
- 19:28Speaker 3: woman's brother and sister in law, but they couldn't help
- 19:30Speaker 3: us either. Frank Smith and I obtained a list of
- 19:33Speaker 3: all of Missus Hopkins' friends and business associates known to
- 19:36Speaker 3: the son and the aunt and the uncle. We spent
- 19:38Speaker 3: the rest of the weekend checking with them. Most of
- 19:40Speaker 3: them gave us pretty much the same story. Missus Hopkins
- 19:43Speaker 3: was well liked and well respected both in her business
- 19:45Speaker 3: and private life. She was devoted to her teenage son.
- 19:48Speaker 3: She didn't drink, and socially her behavior was beyond question.
- 19:52Speaker 3: She attended church regularly, She was active in several women's clubs,
- 19:55Speaker 3: engaged in social and religious work. None of the people
- 19:58Speaker 3: we talked to could think of any reason that she
- 20:00Speaker 3: would want to end her own life. All of them
- 20:02Speaker 3: denied any knowledge of the man known as Leo. Monday afternoon,
- 20:06Speaker 3: October twentieth, Frank and I had another meeting with the
- 20:08Speaker 3: victim's son, Arnold Hopkins. We had him check over the
- 20:11Speaker 3: personal effects found on the body.
- 20:15Speaker 7: Yes, sir, that's hers.
- 20:17Speaker 4: The other ring too. How about this bracelet, sir?
- 20:20Speaker 7: Yes, sir, she always wore that. My dad gave her
- 20:23Speaker 7: to her, I think when he was alive. I mean
- 20:26Speaker 7: she always wore.
- 20:27Speaker 3: M now, the wristwatch, two rings, the bracelet, miss lapelp
- 20:31Speaker 3: in here.
- 20:31Speaker 4: That's about it?
- 20:32Speaker 7: So, yes, sir, I guess so you have her necklace too?
- 20:36Speaker 7: How's that my mother's necklace? She was wearing it that night,
- 20:40Speaker 7: She had it on when she left the house. Didn't
- 20:42Speaker 7: you find it?
- 20:42Speaker 4: What kind of necklace is its?
- 20:43Speaker 6: Son?
- 20:43Speaker 4: What's it look like? What's made like? The bracelet? Is
- 20:46Speaker 4: that one there? See the two of 'em go together
- 20:49Speaker 4: to set Your mother were expensive jewelry like that every day,
- 20:51Speaker 4: did she.
- 20:52Speaker 7: No, sir, she wore the bracelet quite a bit, not
- 20:54Speaker 7: the necklace, so showing wore that when she was dressed up.
- 20:58Speaker 6: I thought about it yesterday.
- 20:59Speaker 7: I meant to tell you about it.
- 21:00Speaker 4: What's that, son?
- 21:01Speaker 7: Well, right after she got the phone call that night,
- 21:03Speaker 7: when she told me she had to go out, Yeah, Well,
- 21:06Speaker 7: she went back and got her coat, and then she
- 21:08Speaker 7: came in the living room and kissed me goodbye. She
- 21:10Speaker 7: had the necklace in her hand.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Are you sure she took it with her?
- 21:12Speaker 7: Oh, yes, sir, I'm positive. After she kissed me goodbye,
- 21:15Speaker 7: she went over to the mirror and I saw her
- 21:16Speaker 7: put the necklace on. She was wearing it when she left.
- 21:20Speaker 7: I didn't think much about it till later on. Most
- 21:22Speaker 7: of the time, she only wears it when she dresses up.
- 21:24Speaker 7: She wasn't very dressed up.
- 21:25Speaker 4: That night, Jo.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Uh.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Can you describe the necklace for her, son, exactly what
- 21:31Speaker 4: it looks like?
- 21:32Speaker 7: Yes, sir, I think I can.
- 21:34Speaker 4: When you saw your mother with a necklace on, did
- 21:35Speaker 4: you think to ask her about it? Yeah? I did.
- 21:38Speaker 7: She said she was wearing it because she wanted to
- 21:40Speaker 7: look pretty. She was going to meet a good friend.
- 21:43Speaker 4: And she didn't say where. No, sir, I guess she.
- 21:46Speaker 7: Was wrong, huh about her necklace?
- 21:48Speaker 4: I mean no son about her friend.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Monday three, eighteen PM, we got a description of the
- 21:58Speaker 3: necklace from the Hopkins confirmed it with his aunt and uncle,
- 22:01Speaker 3: and then we double checked it at the jewelers where
- 22:03Speaker 3: it had been purchased. After that we contacted the Pawnshop
- 22:06Speaker 3: Detail and Burglary Division. The necklace, in its description, was
- 22:09Speaker 3: put on the stolen property list and copies were sent
- 22:11Speaker 3: to secondhand jewelry stores and pawn shops throughout the area.
- 22:15Speaker 3: We also got out a broadcast and an APB on it.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Four fifteen, the following afternoon, we got a reply from
- 22:20Speaker 3: the San Diego Police Department. A pawn shop owner down
- 22:23Speaker 3: there had reported taking in the necklace the friday before,
- 22:26Speaker 3: which matched the description of the one we were looking for.
- 22:29Speaker 3: The man who pawned the necklace listed his name in
- 22:31Speaker 3: the pawn shop's buy book as Raymond Butler. San Diego
- 22:34Speaker 3: officers had checked out the home address that he'd given.
- 22:37Speaker 4: It was a vacant lot.
- 22:38Speaker 3: The necklace was sent back to Los Angeles, where it
- 22:40Speaker 3: was identified as Missus Hopkins. The description of the man
- 22:43Speaker 3: who'd pawned the necklace was forwarded from San Diego, together
- 22:46Speaker 3: with a photostatic copy of the suspect's signature, and we
- 22:49Speaker 3: got out an all points bulletin on him. Two days
- 22:51Speaker 3: passed nothing. Along with Brian and Lopez, we continued checking
- 22:56Speaker 3: all public places in the general area where the body
- 22:58Speaker 3: of Missus Hopkins had been found.
- 23:01Speaker 4: You got anything, Frank, talk to a man by name Wagner.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Joey told me she should do a lot of traveling
- 23:04Speaker 5: business trips, most of them the San Diego h Wagner
- 23:07Speaker 5: says he heard she had a boyfriend down there, tall,
- 23:09Speaker 5: dark haired fellow. That's all no name, So I get it.
- 23:13Speaker 4: I'm side Friday. Well oh yeah, LOPI m h, where checks?
- 23:19Speaker 4: How does it? Yeah? That's good? Fine, okay, thanks Lope, Yeah.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Right away, anything, Joe Lopez, He and Brian just checked
- 23:25Speaker 3: a bar out in the neighborhood where the body was found.
- 23:27Speaker 3: They talked to the bartender in the place, showed him
- 23:29Speaker 3: the description of the man who pawned the necklace.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Bartender says he knows a man. He's sure pretty sure.
- 23:33Speaker 3: He told Brian and Lope that the man's either a
- 23:35Speaker 3: boxer or a wrestler or something like that.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Anyway, you know the man's name, where he lives.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Says his name's Taylor, no home address? You know his
- 23:41Speaker 3: first name, yeah, Leo.
- 23:46Speaker 4: One five pm.
- 23:48Speaker 3: After interviewing four other people who were in the bar
- 23:50Speaker 3: the night of Missus Hopkins's death, Lopez and Brian checked
- 23:53Speaker 3: back in at the office. They told us that at
- 23:55Speaker 3: least one of the four persons they talked to, in
- 23:57Speaker 3: addition to the bartender, was sure that the description of
- 23:59Speaker 3: this suspect upawned. The necklace fitted a man known as
- 24:02Speaker 3: Leo Taylor who was in the bar the previous Thursday night.
- 24:06Speaker 3: He was seen in the place between eight thirty and
- 24:07Speaker 3: nine pm, and he was seen with a woman answering
- 24:09Speaker 3: Missus hopkins general description. The bartender had no idea where
- 24:13Speaker 3: the man lived, but he seemed fairly certain of the
- 24:15Speaker 3: man's name, Leo Taylor, and his occupation either wrestling or boxing.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Five oh five pm we made a run on Taylor's
- 24:23Speaker 3: name and description through R and I, and we got
- 24:25Speaker 3: a make We checked his handwriting and that matched out. Also,
- 24:28Speaker 3: he had one previous arrest for assault and disorderly conduct.
- 24:31Speaker 3: His residence was a West eleventh Street address. We checked
- 24:34Speaker 3: it out, but he'd moved six months before. The landlady
- 24:37Speaker 3: had no forwarding address on him, but she told us
- 24:39Speaker 3: one of the places he used to frequent was a
- 24:41Speaker 3: gym on South Olive, down near Olympic.
- 24:43Speaker 4: We ran it down, all right, come on, I'll get rired.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Come on.
- 24:48Speaker 5: I checked with a fell in the office over there, Joe,
- 24:50Speaker 5: says the man. We once taken a shower back there
- 24:52Speaker 5: at locker.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Room, right out of a way? Sure in here? Yeah,
- 24:57Speaker 4: go ahead?
- 24:57Speaker 3: Yeah, excuse me? Your name Leo Taylor? Ow's that I said?
- 25:04Speaker 4: Are you Leo Taylor?
- 25:05Speaker 6: Yeah? That's right?
- 25:06Speaker 4: What is it? Police officers? You like to talk to you? Oh?
- 25:09Speaker 4: Taking a shower right now? You want to wait a while?
- 25:11Speaker 5: Oh?
- 25:11Speaker 4: Keep Taylor? I wanna talk to you now? All right?
- 25:17Speaker 4: All right? What's the rush? What's it all about? We
- 25:19Speaker 4: wanna talk to you downtown?
- 25:21Speaker 3: What do you want me downtown for a routine check?
- 25:23Speaker 3: Like to ask a few questions about what Jeanette Hopkins
- 25:27Speaker 3: and so?
- 25:27Speaker 4: What about it? When's the last time you saw the woman? Taylor?
- 25:30Speaker 4: I don't know. A couple of months ago.
- 25:32Speaker 3: At least as why, well, you can talk about it downtown. Well,
- 25:34Speaker 3: let's talk now. It'll take me a little time to
- 25:36Speaker 3: get dressed. What's the pitch?
- 25:37Speaker 4: You know as well as we do. You want to
- 25:39Speaker 4: throw me that shirt? Mac? Thanks? What do you mean?
- 25:43Speaker 4: I know as well as you do.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Know what?
- 25:45Speaker 3: No rush, Leo, we can talk downtown. I read about
- 25:49Speaker 3: it in the papers. Terrible thing. He's gonna look her
- 25:52Speaker 3: up one of these days. It's too bad you live
- 25:54Speaker 3: in Los Angeles, Taylor. Yeah, boy, I get down to
- 25:57Speaker 3: San Diego once in a while.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Not too often. You don't think I had anything to
- 26:01Speaker 4: do with it, Da, How do you mean, Leo? With
- 26:02Speaker 4: what I mean?
- 26:03Speaker 3: Jeanette, she's dead. I don't think I had a handle it, Dan.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Let's tell you I'm on a level with you.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Leo.
- 26:08Speaker 3: We've been on this thing a week. We've got you
- 26:11Speaker 3: placed in San Diego. We've got you placed here. You
- 26:13Speaker 3: say you haven't seen missus Hopkins for two months. We
- 26:15Speaker 3: can do a lot better than that. You were with
- 26:16Speaker 3: her in San Diego two weeks ago. We were drinking
- 26:19Speaker 3: wather in a bar out there last Thursday night. You're
- 26:21Speaker 3: weather twenty minutes before she died.
- 26:22Speaker 4: We got all we need. Leo got my coat there,
- 26:25Speaker 4: Graven check the pockets right, Yeah, gotta take a lot
- 26:30Speaker 4: of proof.
- 26:30Speaker 3: I gues you know that. Gonna take a lot of it.
- 26:32Speaker 3: We got it better I have. Let's see keys well
- 26:37Speaker 3: Coln Yeah, okay, let's go. No just a minute, Leo yeah,
- 26:44Speaker 3: con ticket here.
- 26:45Speaker 4: You forgot it.
- 26:53Speaker 1: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:57Speaker 1: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:58Speaker 2: On January twenty eighth, trial was held in Superior Court,
- 27:01Speaker 2: Department eighty nine, City and County of Los Angeles, State
- 27:04Speaker 2: of California. In a moment, the results of that trial.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Now here is our star, Jack Webb. Thank you, George Fentaman.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Friends, There's not much I can add to what you've
- 27:12Speaker 3: already heard about Fatimas. If you smoke them, I know
- 27:15Speaker 3: you'll agree with me that no other King size cigarette
- 27:17Speaker 3: can match Fatima quality. If you haven't tried them yet,
- 27:21Speaker 3: prove it to yourself, buy a pack and give them
- 27:23Speaker 3: a try. I wish you would kind of check up
- 27:25Speaker 3: on what we've been telling you. Compare Fatimas with any
- 27:27Speaker 3: other King size cigarette. You'll like Fatima's better flavor and aroma.
- 27:31Speaker 3: It's extra mild and soothing smoke. You'll find Fatima gives
- 27:35Speaker 3: you more for your money. Yes, Sir, and Fatima, the
- 27:37Speaker 3: difference is quality. Buy a pack tomorrow, Fatima.
- 27:50Speaker 2: When confronted with the evidence and testimony against him, Leo
- 27:53Speaker 2: Francis Taylor broke down and confessed to the murder of
- 27:55Speaker 2: Missus Jeannette Hopkins. She'd been paying blackmail to Taylor in
- 27:58Speaker 2: order to keep their affairs secret, but a month before
- 28:01Speaker 2: her death, she refused to pay him any more. Taylor
- 28:04Speaker 2: threatened her again, and she agreed to give him the
- 28:05Speaker 2: necklace as a final payoff. At their meeting, Taylor demanded cash,
- 28:09Speaker 2: His victim threatened him with arrest, and he administered the chloroform.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Taylor was tried and found guilty of first degree murder
- 28:16Speaker 2: and was sentenced to a life term in the state penitentiary.
- 28:26Speaker 2: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 28:29Speaker 2: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 28:32Speaker 2: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department
- 28:36Speaker 2: Technical Advisors. Captain Jack Donahoe's Sergeant Marty Wynn, Sergeant Van
- 28:40Speaker 2: Sprecher heard tonight were Herbellus, Mick Perrin, Gil Stratton, Jack
- 28:44Speaker 2: Krusian script by Jim Mosey, music by Walter Schumann, Hell
- 28:48Speaker 2: Gidney speaking.
- 28:50Speaker 1: King Size Fatima made. But the same people who make
- 28:53Speaker 1: popular Chesterfield cigarettes has brought you Dragnet transcribed from Los Angeles.
- 29:08Speaker 4: Each Thursday Night, It's Counterspy on NBC
