- 0:00Everyone thinks Bitcoin's biggest risk is regulation, governments
- 0:04or hacks. It's not. The biggest risk
- 0:08is one company, Tether. Right now Tether controls $100 billion.
- 0:14It's the largest stable coin on earth, supposedly backed
- 0:17by US dollars. But here's the problem. Tether
- 0:21has never had a full independent audit. They've been fined
- 0:24by regulators, they've admitted to pass reserve misrepresentations, you
- 0:28know, it's confidence drops even slightly, it's going to
- 0:31be like a bank run. Instant panic, total liquidity freeze, forced
- 0:35liquidations, cascading across every exchange. And
- 0:38Bitcoin just gets obliterated, right? So I'm going
- 0:42to show you exactly why Tether is cryptos and
- 0:45particularly Bitcoin's biggest ticking time bomb, and
- 0:48what happens when it breaks and why you should really be
- 0:52considering closely what you own. So here is
- 0:55the first section I want to discuss with you. It's what is Tether, right?
- 0:59So let's start out simply. Tether, USDT, is
- 1:03what's called a stable coin. It's supposed to be backed by
- 1:07one to one on a US dollar basis. So one US dollar equals
- 1:10one Tether, yeah? So that's what it's
- 1:14supposed to be like. So it's stable. It's pegged to the US dollar.
- 1:17Stability is what allows traders to move in and out of
- 1:20crypto, avoid volatility, store value inside exchanges and
- 1:24provide liquidity through this thing called DeFi and so forth. Tether's
- 1:27market cap sits roughly at about $100 billion. That
- 1:31makes it the largest stable coin on Earth. But
- 1:34if the biggest dollar substitute is in crypto, and
- 1:38it's not solid, what does that say about everything else built on top of
- 1:41it? It's like an unordered to bank, right? So here's where
- 1:44it gets uncomfortable. Tether has never undergone a
- 1:48full independent top tier audit of its reserves. They
- 1:52publish attestations, they publish summaries, they
- 1:55publish breakdowns of holdings, but a full forensic audit
- 1:59has never been done. So historically, Tether has been fined by
- 2:02regulators. It's admitted misrepresentations in the past
- 2:05and shifted its composition. It talks about different
- 2:09reserves being commercial paper of unknown entities. They
- 2:12even claim their own portions of US treasuries, right? But here's the
- 2:15real key question. If you were running the largest, basically quasi-bank in
- 2:19crypto, wouldn't you want to remove all of
- 2:22the debt and do a transparent audit. So if it's clean,
- 2:27why not prove it, right? And here's where it gets messy. There's
- 2:30contagion risk. This is where it starts to escalate. It's
- 2:33very scary. Crypto runs on liquidity. That's how
- 2:37it runs. And liquidity runs on stablecoins. And
- 2:40stablecoins run on trust. If confidence in Tether
- 2:44drops, this is what happens. One, traders
- 2:48rush to redeem all their USDT, their Tether coins, for real actual
- 2:51dollars. Step two, exchanges start to halt withdrawals. And
- 2:55step three, panic starts to spread across every single exchange, it starts to
- 2:59spread, and then it forces liquidations, and it
- 3:02starts to cascade. Prices then collapse massively. Liquidity basically
- 3:05disappears and dries up. And we've seen kind of similar versions of this with The
- 3:09FTX collapse and Terra Lunar and Celsius and all these other things. And
- 3:13the markets basically freeze, right? And each time liquidity just basically evaporates.
- 3:17Each time there's like force selling and accelerated collapse. It's just
- 3:20wild. But here's the difference. FTX was a major exchange. Tether
- 3:24is the plumbing of the entire ecosystem. So
- 3:28if the plumbing breaks, How does the house stand? Just
- 3:31quickly, if you're ready to take control of your finances but feel stuck on
- 3:35where to start, I have a solution. My book, Money Buys Happiness,
- 3:39simplifies investing and wealth building with practical steps to help
- 3:42you achieve financial peace. Get your copy via the
- 3:45link in the show notes and let's get your money working for you. Now back
- 3:48to the episode. So if we look back in history, which is all we can do, it
- 3:52doesn't repeat, as I said before, but it rhymes. So in 2008, confidence evaporated
- 3:56in mortgage-backed securities. The CDOs basically grouped
- 4:00bonds that were just poisonous, right? And Lehman's, as a
- 4:03result of that, collapsed. Lehman Rise, 100-year-old bank lending froze. Iceland
- 4:07went bankrupt. Liquidity crisis. Banks didn't fail
- 4:11because they were worthless, they failed because confidence vanished. And that's what
- 4:14happened in the past in 1929 with bank runs. It's a psychology of
- 4:18fear. And even when there's bank runs on solvent institutions, and
- 4:22everyone withdraws, it collapses. And right now, as I'm recording this, I've said before in
- 4:25just a previous episode, Binance is in trouble because people are
- 4:28repealing and ripping out their crypto holdings out of Binance, and
- 4:32that company, while solvent, can collapse. So crypto is very fragile
- 4:36because it has no safe switches. It's
- 4:39got no lender of Last resort, there's no deposit guarantees
- 4:43like banks. There's no central bank backstop. There's
- 4:47no coordinated rescue mechanism. If Tether faced
- 4:50a true redemption crisis, who steps in? The Federal
- 4:54Reserve. They're not going to do that. Not like they did in 2008 with the
- 4:57GFC. So when trust disappears in a market built entirely on
- 5:01trust, what's left? It's kind of like the
- 5:04final domino. So Bitcoin's value proposition is
- 5:08all about decentralization. But it's really a trading ecosystem.
- 5:12It's actually highly centralized as most liquidity pairs against USDT,
- 5:15right? So it's actually very centralized thing. It's just the
- 5:19narrative is decentralized, because it gets more pundits into play, which
- 5:22actually props up. or the price because there's no value in it. Most exchanges
- 5:26use it as like USDT is a currency, so to speak. And
- 5:30most of the arbitrage flows actually depend on
- 5:33it, right? So if USDT tether breaks it significantly, all
- 5:36the liquidity depends on vanishes. And when liquidity vanishes, vroom!
- 5:41It starts to widen, buyers start to disappear, force selling, Bitcoin
- 5:46technically could go to zero, right? Practically, it would mean total ecosystem
- 5:49failure, and totally possible, right? This is one of the long tail risks no
- 5:53one's talking about. And this is the one scenario that permanently destroys trust
- 5:56in an asset class. Because it's not about a hack
- 6:00or a rogue CEO or a bad algorithm or whatever happened
- 6:03with Enron, you know, like poor accounting. It would mean that
- 6:07dollars propping up the entire system weren't actually real. It's
- 6:10like one big fraud, right? And once the trust is gone, it's
- 6:14hard to rebuild it. And this is a real possibility. Now, to
- 6:17be fair, Tether has survived multiple market crashes, it's
- 6:21processed billions of redemptions, it's done that before, it's increased transparency over
- 6:24time, it's done all these things. There's been Tether scares before, but
- 6:28the risk is not about what has happened already, but it's more
- 6:32about what could happen under stress, real stress, like a proper
- 6:35recession, a proper redemption. an unwinding of
- 6:38the entire system. It's not hysterical, but
- 6:42it could be controlled. So here's an example. It's not really a prediction, it's more
- 6:45of a black swan, okay? Something we can't see. But
- 6:49it's the single most structurally dangerous point
- 6:53in the entire world of crypto. If Tether holds, the system
- 6:56survives. If Tether breaks, it won't just be
- 7:00another crash, it'll be systemic, right? It'll be very much
- 7:03the same as what happened in 2008 with mortgage bonds, but you won't have
- 7:06a bailout. That would be the way I could explain it the most, and totally
- 7:10possible, right? If the GFC could happen in 2008, this could definitely happen in
- 7:13the world of crypto, right? And that's why you need to understand where liquidity truly
- 7:16comes from. So I want to know, do you think
- 7:20Tether is solid? Do you know much about it? Or is this a ticking time bomb that
- 7:23no one's talking about? So if you want deeper dive breakdowns like this
- 7:27without the hype and a BS straightforward show, without
