- 0:22Thanks for listening. As long as you listen to our
- 0:27scripture this morning, which is from First Samuel chapter 3,
- 0:32starting in verse one. The boy Samuel ministered before
- 0:37the Lord under Eli. In those days, the word of the
- 0:41Lord was rare. There were not many visions.
- 0:45One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could
- 0:48barely see, was lying down in his usual place.
- 0:52The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down
- 0:57in the House of the Lord, where the ark of God was.
- 1:00Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, Here I am.
- 1:05And he ran to Eli and said, Here I am, You called me.
- 1:09But Eli said, I did not call, Go back and lie down.
- 1:13So he went and lay down. Again.
- 1:17The Lord called Samuel, and Samuel got up and went to Eli
- 1:21and said, Here I am, you called me my son.
- 1:25Eli said, I did not call you. Go back and lie down.
- 1:30Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord.
- 1:33The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him a third
- 1:37time. The Lord called Samuel, and
- 1:40Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, Here I am, you called
- 1:44me. Then Eli realized that the Lord
- 1:47was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, go and lie
- 1:52down, and if he calls you say, speak Lord, for your servant is
- 1:56listening. So Samuel went and lay down in
- 2:00his place. The Lord came and stood there
- 2:03calling as at the other times, Samuel, Samuel.
- 2:08Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening, and
- 2:13the Lord said to Samuel, see, I'm about to do something in
- 2:17Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it
- 2:22tingle. At the time.
- 2:24I will carry out against Eli everything.
- 2:27I spoke against his family from beginning to end, for I told him
- 2:32that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he
- 2:36knew about. His sons blasphemed God, and he
- 2:40failed to restrain them. Therefore, I swore to the House
- 2:44of Eli. The guilt of Eli's house will
- 2:47never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.
- 2:52This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:55Thanks be to God, I don't know about you, but I can think of
- 3:02very few things in life that we are just naturally able to do
- 3:09right for the vast majority of things that we do.
- 3:12There was a learning process involved at some point.
- 3:16Just think about some of the things that you've had to learn
- 3:20at some point. It could be riding a bike or
- 3:23driving a car, learning how to read or write or even just to
- 3:28speak. It could be computer programming
- 3:32or knitting or a sport. It could even be something like
- 3:36learning to live well in relationship to your spouse or
- 3:40to process your own emotions and experiences in a healthy way.
- 3:46These very disparate things that the common thread through all of
- 3:51them is that these are all things we've had to learn how to
- 3:56do right. We might have some natural
- 3:59inclination towards certain activities, but we still face a
- 4:03learning curve to become proficient in those different
- 4:07things. And This is why I get surprised
- 4:11when people think that just because they've become a
- 4:14Christian, they should automatically be pros at hearing
- 4:19the voice of God or knowing what God wants them to do.
- 4:23And then they get discouraged. They get disappointed when they
- 4:26feel like they're not hearing God or they don't know how to
- 4:30hear God. But just like any other skill
- 4:34that you've developed in life, there's a learning process
- 4:38involved in recognizing the voice of God.
- 4:42And I think this story that Jeremy just read for us about
- 4:46Samuel, it has some things to teach us as we learn to
- 4:50recognize God's voice, not just in Samuel's life, but in our own
- 4:55lives. Now, if you don't know much
- 4:58about Samuel's story, you should know that it begins with his
- 5:02mom. Her name was Hannah.
- 5:05And Hannah, like a number of other women in the Bible, she
- 5:09wanted to have a baby, but she was unable to.
- 5:14Every year she would go with her husband to worship at the
- 5:18Tabernacle. This was before the temple was
- 5:22built. So they'd go to the Tabernacle
- 5:24and Hannah would pray for a child until one year she was
- 5:29there. She was praying before the altar
- 5:32of God. She was praying and weeping and
- 5:35just a mess. And the priest, Eli came in and
- 5:40he saw what was happening. Her lips were moving, she wasn't
- 5:43speaking, all this stuff. He thought she was drunk,
- 5:48thought she was drunk there in the Tabernacle of the Lord.
- 5:51But in her prayer she was negotiating with God.
- 5:57Anyone ever negotiate with God? I'm sure I wouldn't be the only
- 6:01one to admit that I've negotiated with God a time or
- 6:07two or 10. And what she, what Hannah
- 6:11committed to in the midst of that prayer was that if God
- 6:15would give her a son, she'd give that son back to God.
- 6:20She would dedicate him to serve God his whole life.
- 6:25And so sure enough, God blessed Hannah with a son.
- 6:28And after he was old enough to be weaned, she dropped him off
- 6:32to be raised by the priest. Eli, Can you imagine, by the
- 6:38way, God finally gives you this child you've been praying for,
- 6:45and after a couple years, 2-3, maybe you take him to the church
- 6:51and drop him off to be raised by the priest.
- 6:55This is not a program, by the way, that we will be starting
- 6:59here, just to be clear about that.
- 7:02But anyway, Samuel grew up not just going to the Tabernacle,
- 7:08but in the Tabernacle. He lived there in the Tabernacle
- 7:12with Eli and his family. Fast forward to First Samuel
- 7:19chapter 3, and Samuel 3 tells us that in those days the Word of
- 7:26God was rare. There weren't many visions.
- 7:30This was a period of time in which not many people in Israel
- 7:35were hearing a word from God. We're not given the reason as to
- 7:40why this was the case, but if you were to read chapter 2,
- 7:45you'd see that God's voice isn't completely absent.
- 7:50It's just not one of those periods of time where people are
- 7:52particularly responsive to what God was saying.
- 7:56The word of God was rare. The people weren't hearing when
- 8:02God was speaking. And so in the language of of
- 8:07First Samuel, though God's presence was still among his
- 8:12people, it says the the lamp of God had not yet gone out.
- 8:18That lamp, it represented God's presence among his people.
- 8:23So God was still there, but the people weren't hearing him very
- 8:27well. So Samuel, he was just a boy and
- 8:31he's living in the very presence of God, right?
- 8:35Not just living in the House of God, but he, it says he was
- 8:38sleeping in the room where the ark of the covenant stood.
- 8:45Just imagine that for a minute. The the ark of the covenant, as
- 8:48much as the lamp represented God's presence.
- 8:51The Ark of the Covenant was was the symbol of God's covenant
- 8:56presence of his power among his people.
- 9:01And Samuel stretched out on a mat, sleeping in the same room
- 9:06with him. And so one night, while Samuels
- 9:09lying there in the presence of the Ark of the Covenant, he
- 9:12hears God calling him by name, right?
- 9:16He thinks it's Eli, the old priest that he's serving under
- 9:21who? Who would have by now become
- 9:22like a father figure to Samuel. There are probably other nights
- 9:27when Eli had called for Samuel to come and help him with
- 9:31something. Maybe he needed a drink of
- 9:32water, or he needed help getting up to do something.
- 9:35But Samuel doesn't recognize that the voice that was calling
- 9:40him was actually the voice of God.
- 9:44So Samuel goes to Eli. He says, here I am.
- 9:47You called me. But Eli hadn't called Samuel.
- 9:51He tells him to go and lie down and go back to sleep.
- 9:56And then it happens a second time.
- 9:59And I don't know about you, but I don't particularly like
- 10:04getting woken up in the middle of the night, let alone multiple
- 10:08times, even though with kids it sometimes happens.
- 10:12It's kind of part of the territory, but I still don't
- 10:15like it, right? And so then we read in, in verse
- 10:197, it says that Samuel didn't yet know the Lord, right?
- 10:23This was part of the problem. He was hearing God call, but he
- 10:26didn't yet know the Lord. The word of God hadn't been
- 10:30revealed to him yet. And what was happening?
- 10:33It was a new experience for Samuel, one for which he didn't
- 10:36have a framework to understand what was happening, to make
- 10:40sense of it. But when it happened, 1/3 time,
- 10:45Eli realized what might be happening, that God was calling
- 10:50to Samuel, speaking to this boy who had grown up in his
- 10:55presence. And so this time, Eli, instead
- 10:58of just sending him back to go to sleep, he tells him to go
- 11:00back and lie down and go to sleep.
- 11:03But but if he hears that voice calling him again to say, speak,
- 11:13Lord, your servant is listening. And that's exactly what happens,
- 11:20right? And that's exactly what Samuel
- 11:22does. And God gave Samuel a message
- 11:25about Eli and his son and what was going to take place in the
- 11:30future because of their choices and actions in the past.
- 11:35So that's what happened there in the Story of First Samuel,
- 11:40chapter three. And, and like I said earlier, I
- 11:42think this story has some things to teach us about how we learn
- 11:47to recognize that it is God speaking to us in the midst of
- 11:51all the other voices that are speaking in our ears.
- 11:56And so I want to share a few things that that kind of stood
- 11:59out to me and I think could be helpful to you.
- 12:02The first thing we learned is that even though Samuel didn't
- 12:05recognize that it was God's voice speaking, that doesn't
- 12:10mean that God wasn't speaking to him, right?
- 12:15Just because Samuel didn't recognize it as the voice of God
- 12:18doesn't mean God wasn't speaking.
- 12:21I believe the same is true today.
- 12:23God is speaking even when we're not listening because he is a
- 12:30God who speaks. He's a God of relationship, a
- 12:34God who wants to communicate with us and be known by us.
- 12:39The issue is whether we'll learn to recognize that it's God who's
- 12:45speaking to us, which means learning to recognize his voice
- 12:49and distinguish it from all the other voices around us.
- 12:54Because did you notice that God spoke to Samuel in such a way
- 12:58that Samuel thought someone was just calling him from the other
- 13:01room, right? He thought Eli was calling him.
- 13:04It wasn't this big lights flashing, cloud rending voice
- 13:09from heaven. It just seemed normal.
- 13:15And I think sometimes we're looking for God to to write a
- 13:19big message on a billboard that we're going to drive by, that
- 13:23we're going to drive by when really he's whispering and he's
- 13:28waiting to see if we'll slow down and quiet down enough to
- 13:34hear. But God is speaking even when we
- 13:38don't recognize God's voice. That's the first thing.
- 13:42The second thing I see is that that Samuel, he needed help to
- 13:48recognize God's voice as God's voice, right?
- 13:53He needed someone to, to come alongside him and say, I think
- 13:58what you are hearing, I think it might be God.
- 14:02Let's try this. And sometimes, especially when
- 14:06we're early on in our journey of walking with God, we, we need a
- 14:10listening mentor, right? A spiritual parent, someone
- 14:14who's further down the road who can say, well, this is how I
- 14:19learned to listen. This is what God has sounded
- 14:23like in my life, in my experience.
- 14:25Here's here's how we discern God's voice and how we respond
- 14:30to it. It's easier to learn a skill
- 14:34when there's someone to teach us, someone who has already
- 14:38learned how to do it and can share from their own experience.
- 14:43Some of those mentors might be people we know and and can sit
- 14:47down with, share with over a meal or over Bible study or
- 14:52something. Others might mentor us from afar
- 14:55right through a book that they wrote, a podcast they spoke on,
- 14:59something like that. And listen, I'm not recommending
- 15:02this for learning to hear God's voice, but what's the first
- 15:06thing you do when you need to learn a new skill?
- 15:11Chances are if you're under 40, the the answer is probably
- 15:15YouTube it, right? You type in your question what
- 15:19you're trying to learn. Up pops a video Tim and I did
- 15:23just a couple weeks ago. We were trying, I was teaching
- 15:25him how to change the windshield wipers.
- 15:27We got around to the back of the van and that one was different.
- 15:30I couldn't quite remember how to do it.
- 15:32We just pulled it up on YouTube, showed us 30 seconds later we
- 15:35had a, a new, well, not a windshield wiper, but a back
- 15:39window wiper on the van. And you want to be a little more
- 15:44discerning than YouTube, right? When it it comes to the mentors
- 15:49that you're looking to for something like hearing God's
- 15:52voice. But you get the idea.
- 15:55It's helpful to have someone show us the way.
- 15:59We all need help learning to recognize God's voice.
- 16:05That's point #2 third thing, recognizing God's voice is
- 16:11intimately related to knowing God.
- 16:17Right now, it's, it's a little bit of a chicken or egg thing,
- 16:19right? It, it's through hearing God's
- 16:22voice that we get to know God better.
- 16:26And it's as we get to know God better that we're more able to
- 16:31recognize God's voice kind of works in a circle like that.
- 16:36But the key thing is hearing and recognizing God's voice.
- 16:41It's less about knowing what you're supposed to do in the
- 16:44future and more about knowing God.
- 16:50More about being invited into deeper relationship with God.
- 16:55More about learning what it looks like to commune with God.
- 17:01Will that result in in knowing what you should do in in a given
- 17:04situation? Probably, but not always,
- 17:09because you get a direct answer to that situation, right?
- 17:13There will be times when you know what it you're supposed to
- 17:17do, not because God tells you exactly what to do, but because
- 17:21you've come to know God and what he would have you do.
- 17:27So recognizing God's voice, it's, it's about walking in a
- 17:31relationship with God where he's not just guiding you, but you're
- 17:36getting to know him and he is getting more and more access to
- 17:41your life. Fourth thing, and I think I have
- 17:455 points to make about this. In Samuel's story, God waited to
- 17:52be recognized and acknowledged before he continued his message
- 17:58to Samuel, right? God could have just started
- 18:00speaking to Samuel, giving him the entirety of the message in a
- 18:04kind of knowledge dump right on to him, but but that would miss
- 18:08the point of the relationship that God wanted to have with
- 18:13Samuel. God didn't really tell Samuel
- 18:17anything all that different from what God had already told Eli
- 18:22through another man of God back in chapter 2, and go back and
- 18:28read that later. But but God wasn't just speaking
- 18:31to Samuel. He was calling Samuel to
- 18:36himself, drawing him close through this encounter.
- 18:44Finally, I think it's important to recognize that in this
- 18:50instance and in most instances, God wasn't just looking for a
- 18:55one and done mouthpiece right where He gave Samuel a message
- 19:00to declare to Eli. And that was the end of it.
- 19:03God never spoke to him again, or was intending to.
- 19:07This wasn't intended to be a one time event.
- 19:11This was Samuel's initiation into a life of conversational
- 19:16intimacy with God. An ongoing conversation that
- 19:19both shaped and guided Samuel's life and ministry.
- 19:23And if you continue reading through First Samuel, you see
- 19:26this is exactly the kind of life that Samuel lived.
- 19:31But it had to start somewhere, right?
- 19:34Everything starts somewhere. Samuel's relationship with God
- 19:37had to start somewhere. For Samuel, it was that one
- 19:41random night where he laid down and instead of waking up in the
- 19:45morning, he heard God call his name.
- 19:51And you might be sitting there and say, well, Samuel's a pretty
- 19:55important guy in the story of Scripture.
- 19:58I'm no Samuel. Are you sure about that?
- 20:05Samuel, who heard God calling his voice that night, wasn't yet
- 20:11Samuel, who judged and LED Israel as one of its greatest
- 20:15leaders. But that's where it started.
- 20:19That's where the process started.
- 20:22Samuel's yes that night opened the door to all that God would
- 20:27do in and threw him over his life.
- 20:31In the same way, God is looking for an ongoing relationship with
- 20:36us. And and we don't know what he's
- 20:39going to do in and through us when we say yes to him.
- 20:43But he's looking for that kind of relationship with us where we
- 20:46hear his voice and we recognize that it's God who's speaking to
- 20:51us and we respond in faith and obedience.
- 20:54We respond with yes, no matter the question, invitation, or
- 21:00direction. So how do we start to recognize
- 21:04God's voice? Well, you have to get to know
- 21:08God's voice, right? And this this happens through
- 21:10experience. The more you hear and recognize
- 21:14God's voice in one instance, the easier it is to hear and
- 21:18recognize God's voice in other instances.
- 21:21When you begin to hear God in the small, simple things, it
- 21:26becomes easier to hear God in the big things.
- 21:32And that happens a lot of times through our engagement with
- 21:35Scripture. As we read the Bible, as we
- 21:38listen to it being read you, we begin to learn what God's voice
- 21:44sounds like, the kind of things that God says.
- 21:50The Bible is one of the primary ways the God has revealed
- 21:53himself to us. And it's almost impossible to
- 21:58learn to recognize God's voice without Scripture holding a key
- 22:03place in our lives. It's the standard against which
- 22:07we hold up every message we think we've heard from God, we
- 22:11check it against Scripture. Does it directly contradict the
- 22:15plain message of the Bible? And it's probably not God.
- 22:24But even with all that, you might still need some help.
- 22:29You might need someone who's further along to help you
- 22:32identify God's voice, right? A mentor like we were talking
- 22:34about, a spiritual parent, someone further down the road
- 22:37who will listen with you and offer their discernment.
- 22:41And, and finally, another way we learn to hear and recognize
- 22:45God's voice. In Matthew 7, Jesus said that
- 22:49you could know false teachers by the fruit of their lives, by the
- 22:54fruit that's produced in them. Do they produce good fruit or
- 22:58bad fruit? It was also a good test for
- 23:00voices and messages, whether they're from God.
- 23:04What is it that it stirs up and produces in you?
- 23:08Is it the fruit of the Spirit, Lovejoy, peace, patience,
- 23:12kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
- 23:13self-control? Is that what it stirs up in you,
- 23:16or is it fear and anxiety or shame?
- 23:22It's probably not from God, because God, even when he's
- 23:27correcting us, he doesn't condemn us.
- 23:31He convicts us, for sure. But conviction leads us to
- 23:36repentance, not shame. So I've said a lot today,
- 23:44hopefully not too much. If so, I'll hear about it later.
- 23:49But if you don't hear anything else I've said throughout this
- 23:54message, hear this. God is speaking, and He wants
- 24:03you to recognize His voice speaking to you in whatever way
- 24:08it comes to you, because He wants you to know Him and to
- 24:14walk with Him in the relationship of conversational
- 24:18intimacy, right? It doesn't just happen, though.
- 24:21Just like any skill, we have to learn to recognize God's voice
- 24:26among the various voices that are competing for our attention.
- 24:33So here's the invitation this morning.
- 24:36Would you respond to God's voice?
- 24:40This morning, would you ask Him to give you ears to hear him
- 24:47calling your name? Would you respond like Samuel?
- 24:54Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening because he might not
- 25:01be interested in answering the question you're asking, but I
- 25:08can guarantee you He wants to speak into your life.
- 25:14Would you pray with me, God? We are so grateful that you are
- 25:21a God who speaks, that you know us and desire to be known by us.
- 25:32You want to walk with us in a relationship where we hear and
- 25:37recognize your voice so that you can do a work in US and you can
- 25:44work through us. But God, we need, we need ears
- 25:51to hear. We don't want to just be like a
- 25:57radio tune to the wrong, wrong frequency or the radio waves are
- 26:02going by, but they're missing what's really important.
- 26:07So would you help us? Would you speak clearly to us?
- 26:13Would you open our ears to receive your voice, to hear your
- 26:17voice and teach us what it means to recognize your speaking?
- 26:24So we give you ourselves this morning and God even now, would
- 26:31you speak to us and give us courage to respond.
- 26:40We love you and we pray all this in Jesus name, Amen.
