- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Paul was known for not wanting to ever build on another man's
- 0:41foundation. Paul wouldn't be interested in
- 0:44going back to Jerusalem at the time because the church was
- 0:47everywhere in Jerusalem, but he was always interested in going
- 0:51to the regions beyond. Matter of fact, it tells us in
- 0:54Romans that he did not want to build on another man's
- 0:58foundation. He always wanted to see a fresh
- 1:00new work of the Holy Spirit where people would come to
- 1:03Christ who never even heard of Jesus Christ.
- 1:07They're all kinds of people get into missions, work, whether
- 1:10they're going in to support an existing project or going to
- 1:13start a new community of believers at a place that has
- 1:16never heard the gospel. In today's message, Pastor Clark
- 1:19teaches you about the apostle Paul as he relied on God's
- 1:23guidance to know where to go next in his missionary journeys.
- 1:28There are also unreached people in your own community, people
- 1:31who are desperately seeking the kind of hope that only Jesus can
- 1:35provide. Now here's Pastor Clark in the
- 1:37book of Acts Chapter 16 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:41of Grace. We are in the book of Acts
- 1:45today, Acts chapter 16. We studied about the falling out
- 1:50that Paul and Barnabas had in regards to their ministry
- 1:54relationship of so many years together.
- 1:57Very sad. And yet the Lord's work
- 1:59continues regardless of who continues on with you or with me
- 2:03or with the church or whatever. When we're called to do what
- 2:06we're called to do, we keep going on no matter what happens,
- 2:09what the opposition is, what the slander is, what the setbacks
- 2:13are. We keep standing on what it is
- 2:15that God's called us to do, and perseverance in the midst of
- 2:20challenge and difficulty in ministry is something we're all
- 2:24called to. Perseverance in situations of
- 2:27challenges, whether they are in marriage or family or home or
- 2:30work or whatever. We don't give up.
- 2:32We just keep doing what it is we're called to do and what we
- 2:36believe the Bible teaches us to do.
- 2:38And this is what we see occurring in this 16th chapter
- 2:41of Acts. I'm sure Paul had a sad heart
- 2:44after all this happened. Nonetheless, he was called to go
- 2:48with others to follow up on the churches that had heard the
- 2:52gospel where people had become believers.
- 2:54And this is five years after the first missionary journey and we
- 2:58see in the this 16th chapter, verse one.
- 3:02Then he came to Derby and Lystra and behold, a certain disciple
- 3:06was there named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who
- 3:10believed that his father was Greek.
- 3:13He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra on
- 3:17Iconium, and so Paul wanted to have him go with him.
- 3:22This is very interesting when you study these cities and he'd
- 3:25take a couple of minutes to find out where these places are.
- 3:28What's fascinating here is that most of these areas we're
- 3:31reading about in chapter 16 are in the country of Turkey and
- 3:35Turkey today is the most godless nation.
- 3:38It's primarily Islam, Muslim. And you wonder how in the world
- 3:43did the Christian Church, you know, become so weak in this
- 3:46particular region of the world today, primarily through
- 3:49persecution and martyrdom. This is what occurred and Islam
- 3:54became a very, very prominent religion in that region and
- 3:57still is today, is a very small section of modern Turkey today
- 4:01that is Christian, primarily Eastern Orthodox, where the
- 4:05patriarch of Constantinople lives.
- 4:07And they used to have all this ground and now it's relegated to
- 4:10a very small footprint with fences around that.
- 4:13It's just a very, very sad. But anyway, Derby and Lystra
- 4:18Lifestar was a place where Paul and Barnabas preached, and they
- 4:22had miracles occurring and people were becoming believers,
- 4:25and they started idolizing these guys and setting them up as
- 4:28though they were like Greek gods.
- 4:30So they got out of town quick whenever that crazy stuff
- 4:33started happening. So Pauls running into the sky,
- 4:36Timothy, years ago, Paul was in that area and he was getting
- 4:41stoned and having all kind of problems with people persecuting
- 4:44him and wanting to get him out of town, shut him up from
- 4:47preaching the gospel. Eunice and Lois was Timothy's
- 4:52mother and grandmother, and they discipled Timothy and the ways
- 4:57of Judaism at the time, and they were devout believers in the God
- 5:03of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Well, when Paul came and
- 5:06preached the gospel there in that region, grandmother and
- 5:09mother became believers, and then eventually Timothy did too.
- 5:13So Timothy probably remembered the tremendous testimony of Paul
- 5:18and his ability to preach and the influence he had in that
- 5:21region where many people became believers at the time.
- 5:25Timothy's mother was a Hellenistic Jew.
- 5:29His father was Greek. So there's a complication here
- 5:32because even though Timothy isn't perhaps committed to
- 5:37Judaism, he is going to begin to be someone who influences Jews.
- 5:42And so Paul had to do something very interesting here.
- 5:45Now, if you remember last week and the week before, we were
- 5:47studying about the council they had in Jerusalem.
- 5:50It was the first ecumenical council where they apostles had
- 5:55to sit down and discuss what was the key necessary ingredients
- 6:00for someone to become a true believer.
- 6:02And the Galatian people and the Judaizers, these are legalistic
- 6:08Jews, were telling Gentile Christians that they had to be
- 6:12circumcised in order to be saved.
- 6:14Well, this is totally untrue. And so it was a heresy.
- 6:18And so the leaders of the Church of Time, and of course Paul and
- 6:22Barnabas, they went up to Jerusalem to meet with the
- 6:25leaders and they sat and they prayed and they discussed.
- 6:28They had some contentious arguments with some of these
- 6:31legalistic Jews, Jewish people, and finally they came to the
- 6:34realization that there was nothing that anybody had to do
- 6:38to be saved but to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be
- 6:40saved. And then when they were
- 6:42believers and they became baptized, but it was faith alone
- 6:46in Christ, alone by grace alone that caused people to become
- 6:49born again. And so now we see something
- 6:53interesting here. Paul saw the credibility of
- 6:57Timothy. Now, Timothy's a young man, he's
- 6:59got good influence among the body of Christ in this region.
- 7:04At the time, it says he was well spoken of by the brethren who
- 7:08were at Lystra and Iconium. So Paul wanted to use Timothy
- 7:11now as a partner in the ministry to raise, raise him up.
- 7:15Like we noticed certain young guys that come into this church
- 7:18here and they become part of it. We see the potential they have.
- 7:21And Pastor Lewis and myself, we won't be here forever.
- 7:24There's got to be someone down the road that begins to lead and
- 7:26take this church over when we're no longer on the scene.
- 7:30And so you constantly they got to be open and looking for
- 7:33people that God is raising up that are strong young Christians
- 7:37and have a desire to live for Christ.
- 7:40And so in order for Paul to have Timothy go with him, it says he
- 7:45took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in
- 7:48that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.
- 7:52It just stops there. You might say, well, they had to
- 7:55go around Paul and Silas now to all these different churches and
- 7:59explain to everybody that this need for circumcision is
- 8:03counterproductive. There's no purpose in it.
- 8:05It doesn't accomplish anything. And yet Paul understood this
- 8:09idea of becoming all things to all men.
- 8:11This wasn't a thing about salvation.
- 8:13Or Timothy wasn't qualified because he wasn't circumcised,
- 8:17but in order to go into the synagogue and be able to preach,
- 8:20which Paul was able to go in many times and accepted because
- 8:23he was born a Jew, he was a Pharisee, he had been
- 8:26circumcised, and he did all that religious stuff of Judaism.
- 8:30So even though they knew Paul was different now in regards to
- 8:33the things he believed, he was still respected in the
- 8:35synagogues and accepted. And so as a result of that, he
- 8:39had now to make sure that Timothy had this covering, so to
- 8:45speak, this endorsement. So when he brought Timothy into
- 8:48the synagogues around the Jewish people, they wouldn't just stop
- 8:52listening because, quote, he wasn't circumcised.
- 8:54So that was the reason Paul did this.
- 8:57It wasn't compromising the message that they had received
- 9:00from the council in Jerusalem with the elders there.
- 9:04So he took him and and circumcised him because of the
- 9:07Jews who were in that region for they all knew that his father
- 9:10was Greek. Something that's interesting.
- 9:12I don't want to gross you out or anything, but you know,
- 9:14circumcision, you guys know what it is.
- 9:17Paul circumcised him. I don't know if Doctor Luke was
- 9:20arrived at the time and he said Luke, who wrote Acts, could you
- 9:24take care of this for me? There's no way I wouldn't
- 9:27circumcise myself, let alone anyone else.
- 9:29I mean, that's dangerous. What if they bleed to death or
- 9:33something? But anyway, that's just a
- 9:35sideline in my own mind. And so as they went through the
- 9:39cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were
- 9:44determined by the apostles and elders of Jerusalem.
- 9:47So they went out and visited the church.
- 9:49We got good news, guys, you don't have to be circumcised as
- 9:52Gentiles. Your salvation, your faith in
- 9:55Christ is enough. Enjoy your life and the Lord and
- 9:58just keep following him. So they were spreading this good
- 10:01news about the decree and they also were looking at the
- 10:06churches in regard to what they needed.
- 10:08It says in verse five. So the churches were
- 10:10strengthened and the faith and increase number daily.
- 10:14And so the purpose of this ministry of Paul and Silas, and
- 10:20now Timothy going with him, was to go in the places and visit
- 10:24the churches and to speak to them and encourage the elders
- 10:28about the things of God so that the church would get stronger
- 10:31and stronger. And as it became stronger and
- 10:34stronger, it became more influential in the city, in the
- 10:38culture, in the society, and it grew and more and more believers
- 10:41were coming into the church. And then it continues in verse
- 10:456, the Macedonian call. Now when they had gone through
- 10:50the Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by
- 10:54the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.
- 10:58This is interesting. Paul the really the first time
- 11:01in the book of the Acts that he was prevented and forbidden to
- 11:06do something that he believed he was supposed to do.
- 11:09He had a heart, Paul, always to go to places where the gospel
- 11:13had never been preached, to go and tell people who never heard
- 11:16about what it is that we know is Christians.
- 11:20And Asia is one of the most populous places in the known
- 11:24world at the time and even today.
- 11:26And so if you were going to go preach, you would want to preach
- 11:29in the places that had the most people to be able to potentially
- 11:33hear the truth. But for whatever reason, he was
- 11:36prevented from doing this at this time.
- 11:39After they'd come to Mycia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but
- 11:44the spirit did not permit them. Again, this is northern regions
- 11:48of Turkey. And so passing by Mycia, they
- 11:51came down to Troas, and a vision appeared to Paul.
- 11:54In the night. A man of Macedonia stood and
- 11:58pleaded with him, saying, come over to Macedonia and help us.
- 12:03Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to
- 12:06go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach
- 12:10the gospel to them. We see here in this section of
- 12:14Scripture that the will of God overcomes the will of man.
- 12:22Many times we think we should do something and we want to do it,
- 12:26and we justify it in our minds and we think it's right because
- 12:30we believe maybe the Lord spoke to us or gave us a word or we
- 12:34have some kind of insight or some kind of direction that what
- 12:38we're going to do is from the Lord.
- 12:40But when it isn't from the Lord, God speaks to us, and He speaks
- 12:44to us primarily through the Scriptures, sometimes through
- 12:48other people that might challenge you about something
- 12:50you're thinking of doing or possibly considering.
- 12:54The Holy Spirit himself can give you a dream or a vision that's
- 12:57obviously potentially available at times as well.
- 13:02But in this instance, we have someone who was an apostle that
- 13:07God told him no. And we think while the apostles,
- 13:12they never miss God, they always did everything that was right
- 13:15and they never made mistakes. Well, there was mistakes made as
- 13:19I'd spoke in regard to that relationship that Paul and
- 13:21Barnabas had together. It was a bad falling out.
- 13:24It wasn't a good mark on Paul's history of his ministry, nor
- 13:28Barnabas. It's a black mark on their
- 13:30history. And nonetheless, God allowed it.
- 13:33And so now Paul is having this struggle.
- 13:36Now I think we should go to to Asia and we should preach the
- 13:40gospel there. And he probably had all the
- 13:43plans, everybody on board, everybody's ready to go.
- 13:46And then this vision happens and now the Holy Spirit is
- 13:50forbidding him to go there and now he's got to go to Macedonia.
- 13:54So people might say to him and his leadership, but what are you
- 13:56double minded? Don't you hear from God?
- 13:59Are you not sure about what you're supposed to do?
- 14:02Why is it that you were so focused on Asia and now you're
- 14:06not going to go? What's this idea of a vision?
- 14:08How do you know it was from God? How do you, you know, all those
- 14:10kind of thought processes in our human minds would probably occur
- 14:15at that time as well, and maybe people questioning what this was
- 14:19all about. Fortunately, there wasn't a lot
- 14:22of people in this committee. There was Timothy, Paul and
- 14:26Silas at this point in time. So Paul had seen this vision and
- 14:31immediately they sought to go to Macedonia.
- 14:34Macedonia is in Greece, not too far from Thessaloniki, and we
- 14:40have missionaries we support there, the Jacksons, and we just
- 14:44love them and love the work they do there.
- 14:46They're primarily ministering to communities, are influenced by
- 14:50Islam, very, very challenging ministry.
- 14:53And but This is why they did it. They concluded that the Lord had
- 14:58called us to preach the gospel to them.
- 15:02When you look at the world today and the number of places that
- 15:05still are without the gospel missionaries, when they're in
- 15:10candidate school and their training to plan where they
- 15:14might possibly want to be missionaries, they pray.
- 15:18They usually have a big map, a world map, and they'll look at
- 15:20the people groups and they'll look at the percentages of
- 15:23unreached people who have never heard the gospel or areas where
- 15:27it's really difficult to get the gospel in.
- 15:30Most missionaries are a different breed of people and
- 15:33they are adventures. They're pioneers.
- 15:35They're not afraid of challenges.
- 15:37A matter of fact, they enjoy challenge and they look for
- 15:40opportunities to go to places that no one else goes to.
- 15:44And Paul was known for not wanting to ever build on another
- 15:48man's foundation. Paul wouldn't be interested in
- 15:52going back to Jerusalem at the time because the church was
- 15:55everywhere in Jerusalem, but he was always interested in going
- 15:59to the regions beyond. Matter of fact, it tells us in
- 16:02Romans that he did not want to build on another man's
- 16:05foundation. He always wanted to see a fresh
- 16:08new work of the Holy Spirit where people would come to
- 16:11Christ who never even heard of Jesus Christ.
- 16:14Cindy and I were with an organization when we were first
- 16:17married and it's called Ethos 360 now, but they specialize in
- 16:21reaching unreached people groups in in tribal areas.
- 16:25And so there was all kind of places that they were working
- 16:27in. And I sort of had a hidden
- 16:30agenda. I wanted to find a climate like
- 16:32Hawaii. If I was going to be a
- 16:34missionary, I wanted to go to a place that would be nice.
- 16:36I didn't want to go to the Sepi River basin and and New Guinea
- 16:40and get malaria and all those other things, get eaten up by
- 16:44crocodiles and all kind of other weird animals and insects and
- 16:48die. So I looked on the map and I
- 16:50thought, wow, Indonesia, that's very similar to like Hawaii
- 16:55weather. So, but nonetheless, I, I never
- 16:57even got to Indonesia because I didn't know how to build a
- 17:00jungle Hut or kill any animal or, you know, do any kind of
- 17:06building. When you're a tribal missionary
- 17:09like the Dawsons that we support in Venezuela, they had to go and
- 17:14as babies, they grew up in that field and they're still there
- 17:16now. Their parents are with the Lord,
- 17:18but they went there in the 50s. Everything is, you know, brand
- 17:23new all the time. Like, how do we reach these
- 17:26people up the river that have never heard the gospel?
- 17:29Got to get in a boat and figure out how to get up there and get
- 17:32up there safely, missing the piranhas and the crocodiles and
- 17:37the poisonous arrows at the tribal.
- 17:39People try to shoot at you because they think you're going
- 17:41to take advantage of them. But these missionaries are
- 17:44pioneers, and they go and they sacrifice.
- 17:47And many times they sacrifice their laws as Jim Elliott did.
- 17:52Jim Elliott, he was the guy that said he has no fool to lose, but
- 17:56he cannot keep to gain, but he cannot lose.
- 17:58But it's interesting. A week before he was going to go
- 18:02reach those AKA Indians, him and his friends, he was tempted to
- 18:06not go. He was afraid.
- 18:09He thought about his family and he is this really worth it?
- 18:12But he ended up going and he ended up being martyred, him and
- 18:16the rest of the guys. When you think about Paul and
- 18:23Barnabas and Timothy and Paul was eventually martyred.
- 18:27We get like this inside. Look at what it was like to live
- 18:32as these pioneers. We get to read it and
- 18:35participate in it and for reflect on it and meditate on it
- 18:38and perhaps somehow living in a small way in the areas that we
- 18:43live and where we come from, because there's unreached people
- 18:46group right in Greensburg, PA, There's people, believe it or
- 18:50not, that know nothing about Jesus Christ.
- 18:53And you might say, well, how in America could you be here and
- 18:56not know anything about the gospel?
- 18:58What's because of where we are today as a nation, people and
- 19:03these young people. When I grew up as a Pagan, at
- 19:06least I knew that there was a God.
- 19:09I believed that there was a Jesus.
- 19:10I believe that the Bible was true, but I wasn't born again
- 19:13yet, but I had that basic worldview.
- 19:16Now you talk to young people. Do you know anything about Jesus
- 19:19Christ or the Bible or God or the Trinity or the the cross or
- 19:24the resurrection? They look at you like deer in
- 19:25the headlight. They have no idea what you're
- 19:28talking about. So you're starting back to
- 19:30square 1. And it can be dangerous,
- 19:32especially now if you aggressively proclaim the
- 19:36gospel. There's beginning to be
- 19:37persecution in our country and Canada.
- 19:40Pastors that preach out against abortion, our same sex marriages
- 19:46are being in prison. How soon will that be here in
- 19:51our country? This is all involved in this
- 19:54missionary vision. So Paul is going to go to
- 19:59Macedonia now. And we continue in verse 11,
- 20:01this woman by the name of Lydia, she's baptized at Philippi.
- 20:06Philippi is a a wonderful region, opportunity for a new
- 20:10church. Not a whole lot of Jewish
- 20:13people. There was no synagogue there
- 20:15because you needed ten men who were part of the synagogue in
- 20:19order to have a legitimate synagogue.
- 20:21So you'll see, it's interesting here that there is no synagogue.
- 20:24They're meeting down by the river.
- 20:26So therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course
- 20:29as some Moth, and the next day came to Indianapolis and there
- 20:33to Philippi, which is the former city of that part of Macedonia,
- 20:38a colony. So they're in Greece now.
- 20:40And we were staying in that city for some days, and on the
- 20:44Sabbath day we went out of the city to the Riverside.
- 20:46Now, normally in the Sabbath day, Paul and Silas and Timothy
- 20:51would have gone into the synagogue to preach, but there
- 20:55was no synagogue there. So they went out of the city to
- 20:58the Riverside, where prayer was customarily made, and we sat
- 21:03down and spoke to the women who met there.
- 21:05Now, the rabbi said, it's better to have the law burn than to
- 21:11deliver the Torah to women. That's how discriminating and
- 21:15discussing the culture was toward women at the time,
- 21:18especially in Judaism and the rabbi's.
- 21:20There was a low level of esteem for women, which Paul certainly
- 21:24doesn't have here. And now a certain woman named
- 21:27Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from
- 21:30the city of Thyrotyra, who worship God.
- 21:33Thyrotyra is this community, the city that's known for
- 21:37development of purple and dyed material, garments and clothing.
- 21:44And so she's probably got an office down here now in
- 21:47Philippi, following up that she's a very successful
- 21:49businesswoman. And they're down there
- 21:51worshiping God, but they're not worshiping the truth about God
- 21:56yet because they don't know it. But they're there in their
- 21:59religious form of trying to develop this encounter with the
- 22:04living God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 22:07And then it says the Lord opened her heart to heed the things
- 22:11spoken by Paul. So Paul's preaching the gospel,
- 22:17and all of a sudden she's recognizing that there's
- 22:20something missing in her understanding of God.
- 22:27And her heart became convicted, and she began to become drawn to
- 22:34the gospel. And the Lord opened her heart to
- 22:39heed, to obey, to follow the things spoken by Paul.
- 22:45And it's like anywhere you go here today, your home, your
- 22:49community, your workplace, you share the Lord with people as
- 22:53you have opportunity to. Lord opens doors for you.
- 22:58You can't make anybody believe. You can't force anybody to
- 23:02understand the truth. You have to have patience and
- 23:07you have to understand that only the Lord can open the heart for
- 23:11people to believe. That's our job.
- 23:13We're to pray and pray, Lord, open the hearts of those who
- 23:17come here to hear your voice, to believe Your word, to follow
- 23:25you. And the Lord will do that.
- 23:29His word is not without power. It's sharper than any 2 edged
- 23:34sword. It's able to divide us under the
- 23:37soul and the spirit, and is very discerner of the thoughts and
- 23:41intents of the heart. Even today, your mind might be
- 23:44drifting. You're thinking about all kinds
- 23:46of things, but God will take something from His Word and
- 23:50Pierce your heart with it, convict you, challenge you, make
- 23:53you think about Him more. Thank you for listening to this
- 23:58edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching us about the book of Acts in this
- 24:04series. Acts is a powerful and unique
- 24:07part of Scripture, not just because it records the spread of
- 24:10the gospel geographically from Jerusalem to the ends of the
- 24:13earth, but also culturally. Acts shows us how the message of
- 24:18Jesus moved beyond its Jewish roots and began to reach the
- 24:21Gentile world. What started with Peter leading
- 24:24a small group in the upper room became a global movement, with
- 24:28Paul taking the gospel to cities, synagogues, and
- 24:32marketplaces across the Roman Empire.
- 24:35Acts captures this vital transition and reminds us that
- 24:39the good news of Jesus is for all people in every place.
- 24:43May we be inspired to carry that same gospel boldly into our
- 24:48world today. Living Waters of Grace comes to
- 24:51you from Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
