- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. So today I actually got you on a
- 0:31walk with me. We are headed out to do the
- 0:34chores of putting the chickens out.
- 0:36So there may be some strange noise in the background that
- 0:39you're not used to hearing, but it's only because we are doing
- 0:44the chores actively. Now you may be saying, why is
- 0:47she doing chores with us? What is she supposed to be
- 0:50talking about today? Well, really it's about the fact
- 0:53that this is my morning every morning, like I come outside and
- 0:57the very first things I do are very mindful for me, very
- 1:02attention oriented for me, where I am completely and totally
- 1:06focused on making sure that I'm taking care of all obviously all
- 1:11the animals, everything around. And one of the things that I
- 1:14love about doing this that makes me so thrilled all the time is
- 1:19the fact that it gives me this way to start my day in peace.
- 1:23Like right this moment I am picking some mint for tea and I
- 1:27will take that back in the house with me.
- 1:30So when I go to make myself tea in a little while, I'm going to
- 1:33have fresh mint to do it with. And usually we have some bunnies
- 1:37that free range here as well. And usually they stop and grab
- 1:42some of the mint. They really love it.
- 1:44So I usually drop some for them, which is what I'm doing right
- 1:47now and saying good morning to them.
- 1:51Because for me, the whole act of doing all of this is just about
- 1:55love. I mean, if I'm truthfully honest
- 1:58with you, this is a lot of work. And I don't think you can hear
- 2:01him. They're still inside.
- 2:03He's in the window screaming because their auto door hasn't
- 2:06opened yet. An I have trays to put on the
- 2:08ground for them of their shredded zucchini, blueberries,
- 2:13coconut oil, hot Peppers to make sure their guts stay
- 2:17strengthened and get rid of any parasites.
- 2:20Hot Peppers, crushed red Peppers, hot Peppers do a
- 2:23miraculous things for chickens like that.
- 2:25And some oatmeal, just dried oatmeal.
- 2:29They love it. So anyway, those are those trays
- 2:33are now on the ground and now I'm spreading around some
- 2:35scratch for them. And typically the whole time I'm
- 2:38doing this when I'm not talking to you all, I'm just very
- 2:41centered on being very peaceful, just being very like, I get to
- 2:46come out and do this. I get to take care of them.
- 2:48I get to see them in the morning and the world is still quiet and
- 2:53it feels great to be able to just come out and genuinely, if
- 2:58you hear that scratching sound in the back background, that's
- 3:01just me spreading the the scratch grain around along the
- 3:06freeze dried mealworms for them. And it's I just put it all
- 3:09around the ground watching them come out and search it out and
- 3:12find it and look for what they want in the morning.
- 3:16It brings me to a place of peace to start my day.
- 3:20Now, most people might say, oh geez, I don't want chores to
- 3:25start my day. But for me, this is I don't
- 3:29think of them when I use the word chores.
- 3:31I don't think of them as a bad thing.
- 3:33I actually think of chores as something that are they're there
- 3:38to help take care of things that I love.
- 3:41Those chores are present because there's a lot going on.
- 3:45Good morning, girls. I just opened their door and
- 3:47they're all starting to come out now.
- 3:49And one of the, the cool things about doing something like this
- 3:53and having, you know, this type of a situation where you've got
- 3:57animals that require your attention every day is they are,
- 4:02they're part of your everyday life.
- 4:05Like they, they really are a part of your everyday life.
- 4:09And you get to focus loving them unconditionally and taking care
- 4:13of them. I mean, obviously you can make
- 4:15it a chore in your head. You can choose to make anything
- 4:17good, bad or indifferent in your head.
- 4:19But this is where for me, the choices come in to say, OK, I
- 4:24get to come out here. I get to see like I'm looking at
- 4:27them all running around eating their, their breakfast and the
- 4:30rooster being obnoxious. I have one rooster in the
- 4:33morning who's like very obnoxious in the morning, and
- 4:36then he calms down in like 20 minutes.
- 4:37But when he comes out, he's just all full of himself and very
- 4:41cocky. I know, I know where that term
- 4:43comes from because it's very true.
- 4:45And he's just very cocky. And so for me, one of the
- 4:50interesting things is that when you start caring for them and
- 4:54you know their personalities, you start to just find more joy
- 4:59in things. You start to handle things
- 5:01differently and it's looking for those little points of joy in
- 5:05the mundane. When you can find joy in the
- 5:07mundane in the chores, everything starts to shift in
- 5:11the day. Everything starts to have a, a
- 5:14different feeling about it. Looking and making sure that you
- 5:18know they're all OK. It it just, it's part of this
- 5:21whole caring identity that we create.
- 5:24So this is not something that I take lightly because it really
- 5:28does feel to me like they matter and I matter to them.
- 5:33So it's a it's a very useful, useful thing to incorporate when
- 5:39you decide you want to really find joy in your life, find joy
- 5:42in the mundane. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:44you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:47Bye.
