Let the conversation begin on Let's Talk. Welcome ladies and gentlemen too,
0:48
Let's Talk with Carl Lee. And today we are going to have a very
0:53
interesting, interesting show. It's going to be a two part show. And
1:00
Hollis, yes, sir, I am. I am looking forward to to
1:03
to this show. I have for a couple of reasons, and I'm gonna
1:08
I'm gonna I gotta still do a little bit more of the intro. But
1:11
I wanted I wanted to let you know, like when you sent me all
1:15
the information, I was like, huh, this could be interesting and and
1:21
and one of the things that I liked about it, and I don't know
1:23
if you were purposely trying to do it. Is it's it is sports that
1:26
are outside of what people would like to say are the major sports, but
1:34
but they are really really growing, Yeah, growing in important sports. I
1:38
think to our I agree new lexicon of what we consider those mainstream sports,
1:44
right, I I totally agree. Let's Talk is sponsored by Attorney Frank Walker.

2:12

2:17
five eighty WCHS. All Right, so today's show my co host and I
2:25
hollis that we are honored. We are honored to have a like I said
2:31
a couple of different folks on the show. But the first guest is going
2:36
to be Candice Moores, who is at an early age, had a huge
2:42
passion for exercise, therefore motivated her into running. She now run track at
2:50
Capitol High School, West Virginia, our record holder and West Virginia record holder.
2:57
Now, and here's the here's the interesting thing, because you know I
3:00
was I thought I was a track guy, right, I ain't never break
3:04
no records. Okay, let me say that. I thought, you know,
3:07
and I really thought I was pretty good, you know, but again,
3:10
I ain't break no records, you know. And this young lady Candace
3:16
has broken the record, the state record and attends West Virginia State which West
3:25
Virginia State Track is kind of like redoed there, you know. And and
3:34
and in part I'm going to make the case that this generation is what's bringing
3:40
it back. Am I wrong? Yeah? I would say that. So
3:44
in candas, so you said you had an early passion for exercise. Now
3:49
what in the world anybody early age? I mean, I love sports,
3:54
but I ain't love exercising. So where did that come from? Well,
3:59
when I was younger, I used to run around the kitchen and circles and
4:02
circles and circles and circles. So my mom she had signed up for the
4:06
Capital City Striters, and my first day of practice, I just cried the
4:12
whole time. I was like, this is hard. I want to go
4:15
home. I can't do this. So I think maybe a year or two
4:17
later, my mom took me back and I started running. And then ever
4:23
since then, I've been running. Yeah, and that's a really tough program.
4:26
I mean, if you talk about coaches who are passionate, dedicated,
4:30
uh, just an organization that's really really good, it's Capital City Strids is
4:34
one of those organizations. There's there's no there's no question about it. What
4:41
okay? So typically when when when people say like they like exercise, you
4:46
know, and and they run, usually that's more on the distance side then
4:51
than it is that's true good more than like like I'll go out now,
4:57
you know, and I used to could I used to could run again,
4:59
But like I said, I ain't break no records, but I used to.
5:01
I used to run. I used to run track. But like now
5:05
I like, I'll go out and jog and and go some distance to kind
5:12
of just for exercise. That's totally different. And again age has a whole
5:17
lot to do with this too. But what what was it When did you
5:23
figure out like you could you were into the sprints and and that you could
5:27
be good at it. I like to win that money. I didn't like
5:34
to lose, and whenever I would lose, I would try as hard as
5:38
possible to win the next time. So when you first started out and you
5:43
started running, so you had some bumps. Then then you you you weren't
5:47
winning. You didn't start out necessarily winning and having success like started like right
5:56
from the beginning. Oh I won, I won, I want to one.
5:58
But you had some losses which then in turn made you have to work
6:01
hard. Yeah. I think I had a teammate that I used to run
6:05
with for the striders and we would go neck and neck, so she motivated
6:10
me at practice to run harder and to beat her. Yeah, I sharpers
6:15
are And what events do you run? What are your events? Well?
6:19
I used to be a one, two four runner and then I stopped running
6:24
the four hundred, so now I just run the one, the two in
6:28
the four by one. But I think this upcoming season, my track coach
6:31
is going to have me running the four hundred. Okay, And you say
6:34
track coas and you, as we mentioned earlier, you are a track athlete
6:38
at West Virginia State University. Now that is an upstart again. Track at
6:43
West Virginia State is kind of it's there one year, gone the next,
6:46
so you are on the revitalization of it. What made you choose. I
6:50
mean, being a record holder in high school? What made you choose?
6:54
Hey, I'm going to go to West Virginia State to excuse me continue my
6:58
career. We'll see. At first, I wanted to go to out of
7:01
state school, but then my senior year, I had got injured and I
7:06
wasn't able to run as well as I thought I was going to run.
7:10
Can we ask what the injury was. I sprained my ankle and peeled my
7:14
hamstring. Oh okay, yeah, so I had that problem. And then
7:17
the track coach at State he had called me and was like telling me about
7:23
the program, and I was like, okay, this sounds good. So
7:26
I committed. I was the first person to commit to the track program.
7:30
And then after that a whole bunch of people started to commit. And then
7:33
I got down there and I really enjoyed it, and I learned a lot
7:36
more about track. Whatever. I gone to college, and you guys had
7:40
an excellent year. I mean, like I said, to be a first
7:44
year program. I mean, like I said, I watched you guys throughout
7:46
social media. I don't know if you wanted the conference, but I think
7:50
you competed for conference titles and various track meet you, we actually came out
7:56
on top. So how was that experience? Like I said, just being
8:00
being new on campus and you know, actually actually being pretty good. It
8:03
was amazing. I started off the season very nervous, but then as it
8:09
went on, I started a game work confidence and I started to enjoy it
8:13
a lot. And I learned, like I said, a lot about Tchack
8:16
that I didn't know in middle school or high school or from AAU sports.
8:20
So the the comment that you made about being confident, you started to gain
8:28
confidence. That is That is and and Hollis. We've talked about the reasoning
8:37
or the purpose for confidence, and some people can can take it even as
8:41
arrogant sometimes, but there's a confidence that tells you that you that something inside
8:50
of you tells you that you can be something that tells you that like,
8:52
okay, I can do that. When you have that, sometimes people people
8:58
look at it or or it sounds they don't like the way you walk,
9:01
the way you act or whatever. But when you took that, when you
9:07
when you started thinking and I think I can do this, and I think
9:11
I can be pretty good. That confidence when you when you when you walk
9:20
on the track, what are you thinking? Like, are you are you?
9:24
Are you? Are you thinking about being the absolute best? What is
9:31
what is that mindset? Being in that mind of already thinking okay, I'm
9:37
want to be good. I think I'm pretty good. Where does that take
9:41
you in the track meet or when you walk out on the track. Well,
9:46
track is a very mental sport, its individual so it's all on you.
9:52
If you go on the track with the mindset, if you're not going
9:54
to do good or you're nervous, then that's how you're going to do.
9:58
So I I just had to change my mindset and tell myself whenever I get
10:03
on the track, I'm going to do well. Regardless of what's going on
10:07
or regardless of what's going on with the team, I have to do well
10:09
on my own. And there was a little bit of an added pressure.
10:13
Like I said, we mentioned that again, this is a new sport at
10:16
West Virginia State University, and you were, for lack of better words,
10:20
the lottery pick. You are the at least one of the premier athletes on
10:24
the team, So that was an extra Was that an added pressure? Did
10:26
you feel that I was dealing with that? Well, first, I was
10:31
the only person on the team from West Virginia. Oh okay, So I
10:35
had that pressure on me. And you know, like when a lot of
10:39
people think of West Virginia, they think of hillbilly's and they don't think good
10:45
things. Right, So whenever I first got there, I guess I don't
10:48
know, maybe some people didn't like me or they are like just they assume
10:54
things just because I was from West Virginia. Yeah, we know that,
11:00
we know that. We don't how that worked. I didn't like that.
11:03
I did not like that at all. Like the first few months was rough.
11:07
I was like, dang, like these I want a team full of
11:09
people, none of them are from here. They're not even trying to talk
11:11
to me because I'm from West Virginia. So I feel like I had to
11:16
like break that. And after I broke that again, more confidence and I
11:20
started to do better. And I think those folks also kind of looked at
11:26
you and are looking at you totally different now. And how does it feel
11:33
now? You know? And I can you know, and Hollis you can
11:35
probably relate to this too. There's a place when you walk out on the
11:39
field, walk out on the track, walk out on the court. There
11:45
is a place when you walk out there like like, you know, you
11:48
belong out here and everybody else y'all need to figure out, you know,
11:54
what y'all gonna do. But I already know that I belong out here?
11:58
Is is it? That? Is that where you are now as a as
12:03
an athlete? Yeah, I feel that way now, but I still have
12:07
a lot of work to do. So and mentioning that, like I said,
12:11
you you were the freshman of the year in the conference, and you
12:13
actually we did really well in a couple of big meets. I know Marshall
12:18
probably had the biggest meat this year. Correct, And not only did you
12:20
do well, but I think the team did actually pretty will in that meat.
12:24
So how was that experience competing because I know in several of our meets
12:28
we were competing against D one athletes and we were beating D one athletes,
12:33
So how was that feeling? Well? At the Marshall meet? If I'm
12:35
being honest, I just wanted to beat Marshall. There you go, see,
12:46
what what what? What? I what? I like? What I
12:50
like about what I'm hearing is even though that was that may have even been
12:54
a little tough to say, you said it, and I think, you
13:00
know, I go back my mom, my mom and my dad. They
13:03
were They were adamant about saying what you want, saying what what you believe,
13:09
and when you say it now, it puts you in a spot where
13:13
you have to do you got to go do it. And when you're thinking
13:20
about going to do it, I'm gonna make the case you're probably never going
13:22
to put yourself in a situation where you're out of shape, whether it's in
13:26
season out of season, should be worried. I want to run today.
13:33
Actually, And I think and and and and folks who are listening, we're
13:41
talking about someone who is enjoying what they do, the process, the process,
13:48
and they love the challenge of people wanting to be faster than them.
13:52
But the goal is to be the best. And they're working out. They're
13:58
not sitting at home talking about how good I am. They're out doing the
14:05
work. And I think that that is what we miss. I think that's
14:09
the hardest piece to get into somebody's mind, is the work that it's required.
14:16
We've had thousands of conversations about this, and having you on the show
14:20
and having you say that just clarifies it. I mean to be good,
14:24
to be great. The work you have to put in work, in the
14:28
work and let's switch gears. So you said you got into track because you
14:33
were kind of a rambunctious kid, is what I'm gathering. What did you
14:37
grow up watching the Olympics? Because we have the Olympics coming up this years
14:41
in Paris, Chicai Richards and we got some great Olympic athletes. I mean
14:45
some of the preliminary events have been just great. So did that have like
14:48
an influence on you growing up? Yes? And who did you watch?
14:52
I think growing up one of my favorite track athletes was Alison Felix. Yes,
14:58
yes, yeah, So when you watch it, when you watch it
15:03
today, when you're watching the Olympic all the Olympic trials and all that kind
15:07
of stuff, when you look at it, what do you what are you
15:11
seeing? What do you what are you getting from it? Is there something
15:15
that you're watching because it's not just entertainment, it's it's you, Like you're
15:20
seeing yourself and you're watching this start, you're watching this person. Finish,
15:24
tell me a little bit about what that what that is for you, because
15:28
everybody knows that it's got to be different when you're looking at it versus me
15:33
looking at it, you know, because you're you're you're getting something from it.
15:37
Well, it's making me happy that track and field is becoming more marketable.
15:41
M h yeah, because like professional track athletes don't make a lot of
15:46
money, but track athletes like nil Deal's and stuff like that, Like track
15:50
athletes are becoming more marketable and that makes me really happy. Now, is
15:56
the Olympics a goal for you? Is that something you aspire to do or
16:00
like Diamond League track or anything like that. Yes, I do want to
16:03
go to the Olympics. The next Olympics is in la I think Yepeen and
16:10
it was we just had a I think she ran. I want to say
16:11
that eight hundred a young lady from Ironton, Ohio, which is, you
16:17
know, right across the river. She just now made the Olympic track team.
16:19
So that's close to home. So that's somebody you know, it can
16:22
be done, It can definitely be done. And it was some d two
16:26
athletes and athletes that made the Olympic team. Have you have you done some
16:34
research to see what it what your times are going to need to be.
16:41
Have you done that kind of work and when you looked at the times that
16:45
you're gonna need to, let's say, qualify. Do you see that within
16:51
your reach and have you started that track toward that Olympics already or are you
16:59
still kind of like you still got a little bit of time and you're just
17:02
kind of working at the state to just be the best athletes you can be
17:06
there. I've been training towards it. My track coach told me that if
17:11
I keep up the work that I'm having now that I could go maybe pro
17:15
in a couple of years. I just have to make trials in three years,
17:22
four years. So I think I think I can do it and give
17:26
it in West Virginia State University track coach what's his name, Yeah, we
17:30
gotta give him some you know, job, and he's doing an excellent job.
17:36
And what I like about when you talked about the nil deal, when
17:38
you talked about exposure, what I loved about him and what he was doing
17:42
on social media. I thought he did an excellent job presenting you guys on
17:47
social media. I mean, you guys were all over the place, whether
17:49
it was an IG, whether it was Facebook or Twitter or whatever. And
17:53
I think the way he presented it, it was like, man, this
17:56
is this is something big that's going on, and so I love what's going
18:00
on down there. And let me let me give a shout out to Attorney
18:06
frank Walker. Real talk, real experience, real results, Frankie Walker dot
18:11
com. Just so that we get a shout out to our buddy Frankie Walker.
18:15
We want to make sure Attorney Walker, Yeah, we have. We
18:19
need to actually get him on the show. We got to get him on
18:22
the show. So so he's not in town though, is he He's West
18:26
Virginia, Pennsylvania. So he has a law practice in both states. All
18:29
right, we gotta you know, Frank we gotta get you on the show
18:32
man. All right, So when you from from this point on, from
18:38
State to the Olympics, who is the challenging person that you see? That's
18:47
that's whether it's somebody at another school, somebody at at State. Who's the
18:52
who's the one that you gotta beat? Not saying that you haven't beat them,
18:56
but who's the is there a challenge out there that you want to conquer?
19:02
But we've already done, Marshall, so that we get off, we're
19:06
gonna he's liking that for Bill, Okay, he's digging that me. So,
19:11
yeah, who is there a school. Is there a person, is
19:15
there something, what's the what's the goal? Who's the Who's that person that
19:19
you're like, Okay, I want to run against that person because I want
19:22
to show that I can beat that person. There's this girl from Leonora Ryan.
19:30
She's a no, she's going to be a junior this year. I'm
19:33
going to be a sophomore. I think she won nationals with a ten ninety
19:38
six. Is a sophomore that's really good. I want to be able to
19:45
run against her, I know, run against her during indoor season. So
19:48
I think if my indoor season turns out the way I think it will,
19:52
I think I'll be close to her. Okay, So how's that? How's
19:56
that indoor? How are you thinking that indoor is going to go? I
19:59
think it's going to be go amazing? Okay, Okay, how you going
20:02
to hear it? And when does indoors start? The first track meets in
20:07
the beginning of December okay, okay? And what do you and what do
20:10
you before we go? What are you majoring in the state? What's your
20:12
major social work on of minor psychology? Nice? Where? Okay? So
20:18
when is that? When is when is that first meet the indoor meet well,
20:22
because we're gonna have We're gonna we're gonna have to we got we gotta
20:26
check it out because I want to see you. I want to see you
20:29
run well. Last year it was in Kentucky at this new complex near the
20:36
Muhammad Ali neighborhood somewhere around there, and it's nice, Like I ran against
20:42
people from Stanford and Texas Longhorn. I'm like, these people were fast.
20:48
I want to get up there and run third times. And that's what I
20:52
love about track because track is one of those sports where you compete against everybody,
20:56
you know what I mean. It's not necessarily not just pigeonhole to your
20:59
conference or even your division. You compete it, you get to see,
21:02
you get a taste the way. It is kind of really like a national
21:06
kind of a thing because whatever your time is is the time. It's the
21:11
times the time, and it's competing against anybody else that's in that time,
21:15
that in that age, bracket or class or whatever you've got to you've got
21:22
to compete in that, which to me, I think I think the confidence
21:27
has to be there, like yeah, yeah, you you can't solve on
21:30
you, Yeah you can't there's there's no there's no see. I can always
21:34
say, well, hey, if a couple of guys up front, do
21:37
a little something that will help me, you have a safety come in my
21:41
back. You ain't got that. You don't have none of that. It's
21:44
just you and the cart, you know. And and and like I said,
21:48
I loved I loved track, you know. And and and I'll say
21:55
this my track coach and Marshall. I ran track my senior years just to
22:00
get ready for you know, professional football. And he tried to get me
22:07
to run the four hundred, and I was running the hundred and the two
22:12
hundred. The two hundred was like killing me. And I'm thinking, man,
22:18
I can't, I can't. I can't do it. I can't,
22:21
I can't. I don't want to do it. Fast forward two years and
22:26
now I'm I'm playing professional football. My training is four hundreds. I'm running
22:33
four four hundreds. I put them at State as a test. Four four
22:38
hundreds, four to two hundreds, four to one tens. Okay, all
22:42
on the clock and recovery time. Recovery time. You had recovery time like
22:48
you might have had like about a minute in between once you came through the
22:55
line you got, you had about a minute to recover and then you right
22:57
back on the clock. I would and again, in hindsight, I so
23:04
wish I would have ran the quarter because that that is the run that that
23:12
helps the hunter, that helps the two hundred and as as terrible as it
23:18
is, I would if if I would have that opportunity again, I would
23:22
have run. I would have definitely run the court. And what is in
23:26
speaking of that, like, what is your off season training looking like?
23:30
Are you lifting weights? Are you strictly running? Like? What does that
23:33
look like whatever you did this morning? What does that look like for you
23:34
as far as or is it technique? Like what are you working on as
23:37
a premiere UH collegiate track athlete during the off season? I've been doing technical
23:45
things happen to good people seriously injured in a car accident, trucking accident,
23:48
or even wrongfully arrested. Life happens, and when it happens to you,
23:52
you will need sound legal advice and aggressive representation. One think it's texted to
24:06
a friend for zero friend zero one, visit online attorney. You got to
24:11
run that like full till like you can't get ninety five and start to slow
24:18
down because somebody's gonna get you. Yeah, And I don't think that they
24:23
understand the reality of where that endurance running comes from and why it's important and
24:30
and and being like a female athlete, being a woman athlete. How are
24:37
you when we look at sports today, there's an emphasis on female sports now.
24:44
It's kind of in the line like whether you're talking about tracks, Kari
24:45
Richards, whether you're talking about basketball or whole hosts of other sports. So
24:49
how is that like, coming up in this air and having the spotlight on
24:53
women's sport? I like it, Like think of it that much, though,
25:00
I just I guess maybe we think about it more because it just wasn't
25:04
like that. I mean, obviously track and field is something we always brought
25:07
an attention to when it came around. But I think we're paying off season
25:11
and like I said, it's just an emphasis one and and I would if
25:17
I would again, I'll just say this, I think trying to be part
25:23
of that, Like I would want to be part of that new thing,
25:30
you know. And again, if you if you keep going on at the
25:33
pace that you're going, you're gonna be in that. You're gonna be in
25:37
that conversation. I mean, you're here because we know about you, and
25:42
that's gonna that's only gonna keep growing, and it's going to put you in
25:47
that in that limelight to potentially be that person. And trust me, you
25:56
there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy the idea of the possible that being you,
26:00
you know, because if why not you? I mean at this point,
26:07
like I mean, you're out. I mean, you're the one out
26:08
there. You know what I'm saying. You're the one that's out there.
26:11
You are the one that we're talking about. Yeah. So so before we
26:17
wrap it up, you have anything else you want to say? Give up
26:18
your I g give you you know, your social media information, anything else
26:22
you want to say to the people else I have to say. Okay,
26:27
Well, like I said, we wish you the best best of luck this
26:30
season, like continue to grow, and we want to see you an Olympics.
26:33
So we want to see we want to say we was the first interview.
26:37
Yes you say that, and yes and and and we're gonna come and
26:41
hollers. So I have to tap me on the shoulder and say, hey,
26:42
we're coming to it. We're coming to a meet Yeah, okay,
26:45
And and and we'll watch you because we're gonna support you all the way through.
26:51
All Right, we appreciate it. Thank you. All right, ladies
26:53

27:51
This is let's talk with carl Lee. Now back to the conversation. Hollis
27:56
uh, Cannice, I think is one of those kinds of young ladies that
28:03
I think is going to be actually like great. I think it's just special.
28:10
I mean, coming from a place where you are the premier, the
28:12
top track athlete in the state, and you go to a new program and
28:18
then you have similar success at that level at a new program at a different
28:22
level. Competing it not only against D two athletes, but you're competing against
28:26
D one athletes is a special thing. And again, like you said,
28:29
with a new program just starting started and like literally months before she gets right
28:37
right, all right. So one of one of the interesting components that I
28:45
think in sports today is the growth of a host of different sports, and
28:53
one is definitely soccer. Soccer has become the go to sports. It has
29:03
become the go to even in our youth football league and our team we had
29:10
a we have a couple of kids who are not gonna play football this year
29:14
that were pretty good in football and you're gonna play soccer, you know,
29:18
and again it's kind of hard, it's kind of hard to compete against it.
29:23
Or to say something like, oh, no, you should play football
29:27
not soccer. It's that that and it's hard and we'll get into it,
29:32
but it's hard to compete on a lot of different levels, a lot of
29:37
We're gonna get right into it. We'll get into that. But but but
29:41
you're right right. So I want to introduce our second half of the show,
29:48
our new guest, Chris Kessel, west Side Soccer Association. Yeah,
29:57
and I'm gonna I'm gonna stop right there here because Hollis, if you if
30:03
you say to me west Side in sports, I'm automatically thinking football. Yeah,
30:15
And I want to I want to make the case from Chris. You
30:22
you you grew this program from fifteen players to two hundred and seventy five in
30:30
six years. Yeah, about six years and what ages? So uh in
30:34
the spring we go everywhere from four year old through their senior year in high
30:38
school. But you know obviously in the fall when scholastic soccer is going on
30:41
at you four through U twelve And we had two hundred and seventy five kids
30:45
this spring. Wow. And former president Canall Valley Soccer League huh, the
30:52
largest, the largest huge soccer league in West Virginia. Yeah. Hey,
30:57
when I was president, we had about three thousand kids that's in that's covering
31:02
the county and on Putnam County, on Putnam County. And you hold a
31:06
multiple coaching license in the United States Soccer Federation. Uh huh. You do
31:14
camps, yeah, clinics, even pick up soccer. Yeah, so all
31:21
this is all on the all this is all west Side, yeah or everything.
31:26
So west Side Soccer basically covers the East End and the West Side.
31:30
Right. We play at Cato Park up on the west Side Hill, And
31:36
so all of our kids, with the vast majority of our kids end up
31:40
going to Capital. We got a sister program, can All City Use Soccer
31:44
that all their kids end up at Capital too, that we work hand in
31:47
hand with not as like we compete on the field, but we like collaborate
31:51
off the field so that everybody works together. But yeah, we're pretty much
31:56
Piedmont Elementary through the West Side. So let me start by saying this,
32:01
like, because I know which is a youth football is a subject, a
32:06
sore subject for me and I hate talking about it. Coach, I can
32:08
tell you that. So when we've seen like at least in this area and
32:12
maybe some other areas who people from other jurisdictions that are listening when we see
32:15
the decline, is kind of what happened to you football? Maybe in basketball,
32:20
baseball, some iterations. How were you able to not only grow this
32:25
league but sustain it over these past several years. So there's been quite a
32:32
few things that we've done, so just to kind of touch on this,
32:37
like I've been a youth sports coach for over twenty years. Okay, okay,
32:40
hold that not right there, because when you say that, tell me
32:45
what what youth sports? Because I'm curious about where that all is and how
32:51
that So one of my mentors was Paul Gilmer at Midwestern. I coached at
32:57
Midwestern Youth Football with Mike Ferrell, and Paul was one of my mentors in
33:02
youth sports. Right. He showed me the proper way to run an organization.
33:07
Y'all were talking with Canvas about stritters, you know. He was an
33:09
integral part of making Striders what it is and what it was. So he
33:13
helped show me how you run an organization, how you treat your volunteers,
33:17
how you recruit people, and like I've taken those lessons one word, you
33:23
know, to soccer, which soccer was always my passion. I started playing.
33:28
I'm forty eight. I started playing when I was five, So I
33:30
still play now two three days a week. You know, it's a lifelong
33:34
sport, so I continue to do that. So I took those things that
33:37
I learned from football, which I didn't know anything about football when I started
33:42
coaching. I played one year. I was terrible. I didn't like getting
33:44
tackled and I didn't like tackling people. So football wasn't for me, right,
33:47
But like to coach, I felt like I needed to be the best
33:50
coach that I could be, So I went to coaching clinics. I befriended
33:54
Capitals coaches, UC's coaches, State whatever, so that I could learn and
33:59
absorb of how I could be the best teacher of the game that I could
34:01
be. Right, So I had this experience of I didn't know anything,
34:07
and I didn't know how to coach or the actual like intricacies of the game.
34:10
Right when you watch football on TV, it's one thing, but when
34:14
you're trying to teach a kid who doesn't know anything, it's a totally different
34:17
thing, totally different. So I could take that experience also and go Okay,
34:22
Hollis is going to be a new coach for me. I know he
34:24
was a college quarterback. I can now frame the game of soccer in a
34:29
way that he can teach children that he doesn't need to know as much about
34:34
it as me. He just needs to know more than the kids that he's
34:37
coaching, right. So when we do all of our coaching education through our
34:40
program, it's we try to set it up in a way that we help
34:46
parents, volunteer coaches like understand the game as it relates to a child,
34:52
to whatever age group they're doing. Instead of going, okay, well I
34:58
need you to know as much as you know the Manchester City coach or anything,
35:01
right, So what is the education piece? How does that? How
35:06
do you facilitate them? So there's a couple of things that we do which
35:10
before every season, after every season, and every summer and every winter,
35:16
we offer coaching education to every volunteer in the program. So a lot of
35:22
our coaches participate in it. They want to come, they want to learn
35:24
because like a lot of volunteers, they want to be good, right,
35:29
Like you just have to help engage them in this learning process. So we
35:35
come out, we give them coaching plans. We show them what the activities
35:38
look like, We show them the coaching points that they could they should do,
35:43
because just going out and like running a drill is just running a drill.
35:46
If you don't know how to correct the mistakes that your children are making,
35:50
and if you don't know what mistakes to look for right, you don't
35:54
actually know how to coach them, you're just actually running an activity. See,
35:59
I'm and I'm going to I'm gonna take you back to I'm not going
36:02
to ask you the question, but I'm gonna I'm gonna put it out there
36:06
and maybe holler, so answer it when you go. When you start talking
36:10
about youth football, I think the lack of understanding, the lack of actually
36:17
knowing the game. I mean, everybody has watched football, and everybody kind
36:22
of has played it a little bit, but that doesn't necessarily. Let's face,
36:28
bad things happen to coach, seriously, wrongfully arrested happens when it happens
36:37
to you, you will mean aggressive representation. That's when you call it zero
36:43
four zero one letting him to a friend three zero four zero one seven visit
36:54
attorneys to talk maybe with youth football is that there is no there's a lack
37:00
of structure. Yes, you're not actually sending these coaches again volunteers, you
37:06
know, doing the Lord's work, but you're not actually sending them to be
37:10
schooled and educated about what they're doing. And don't I don't but to I
37:15
agree, and I'm trying to make that same point. But I think that
37:19
a lot of those coaches I think that they do. Now. Yeah,
37:22
I mean, but you you don't have a choice of You've never like been
37:25
taught anything else. You see what I'm saying. Okay, so you're gonna
37:28
have to You're gonna have to know, Like if I don't have any other
37:31
like education, then I just I kind of just go with I gotta go
37:36
with it. So one of the things that I think that we tried really
37:39
hard to do was to create a culture of learning amongst the volunteers. So
37:44
even though we have these very structured coaching education activities that we do, we
37:51
also have like a Facebook group chat with all the coaches, and we have
37:55
like all these other times when we can pay like well, what are like
38:00
my kids are struggling with X, Y and Z, Like what can I
38:05
do to help that? Right? So it's okay. We've made it okay
38:08
for people to ask questions. We've made it okay for people to admit that
38:14
they're not the best that there is or that they're an expert in everything.
38:17
Right, we're all still learning. Like I still go and participate in coaching
38:22
education at every opportunity, right, Like I'm not coaching. I don't have
38:27
aspirations to be a college coach or anything like that. I just I love
38:30
coaching kids from the neighborhood that I live in, you know what I mean.
38:32
Right, But I still want to go out and be the best coach
38:36
that I can be, so that when I coach my coaches or when I'm
38:39
coaching the kids, that they get the best version of me that I can
38:43
be. Right, And we try to facilitate that culture amongst our coaches as
38:49
well. And you talk about culture, and you when we were talking Saturday
38:53
night, you mentioned a phrase a philosophy if you will to me that it's
39:00
and you can talk about to not keep a score. You can put that
39:02
in there because you said to me, it's about participation over winning. Yes,
39:09
participation over winning, which was hints why you have three thousand kids playing
39:15
in the two counties. So where did that philosophy come from and how has
39:20
that manifested in the success of this organ because it is not that is not
39:24
the typical no concept when it comes to youth sports at all. So there's
39:30
a couple pieces of it. So like the league, the Knall Valley Soccer
39:35
League has been around since nineteen seventy nine or something, nineteen seventy eight,
39:38
something like that. It's the same league that I played in with his kid.
39:40
It's never like there hasn't been all of the youth football drama of the
39:45
league collapsing in. In other words, it's like been the same thing,
39:49
and it's been a similar way I think the whole time. I don't really
39:52
remember what it was like when I was like five, But it's we try
39:58
to make everything players right, because what you want is to make all of
40:04
the decisions around how your team exists, how your club exists, and how
40:08
the game exists for the betterment of the child and not the betterment of the
40:13
adult, right. So that's that we've really made that Now. Obviously,
40:19
when you have three thousand kids in the league, we have hundreds of coaches.
40:22
Everybody is not going to be great but in our club, we try
40:24
really really hard to hammer this home right that when we are playing these games,
40:30
and when a lot of people hear that we don't keep scoring the games,
40:35
they're like, oh, you don't want them to compete. No,
40:36
trust me, the kids know the score of the game, right, But
40:38
we don't have standings and we don't keep a record, so that when coach
40:43
Chris is coaching the game, and I have to make sure that everybody gets
40:45
fifty percent playing time in every game, because that's the rule that we abide
40:50
by. Right, I can substitute a kid in because we don't have standings.
40:55
You know, when it's time for kids to play more than one position,
41:00
instead of trying to hide, you know, this little girl over here
41:02
where I think that she's not going to hurt the team, I can play
41:05
her at center midfield for ten or fifteen minutes because that's what's the best thing
41:10
for her and her development as a player. So might hurt the team today,
41:15
but I want everybody. Frankly, we have a goal with Westside Soccer
41:22
to help Capitol High School win state championships. Right. It's not to win
41:25
a bunch of U ten championships like nobody cares. Like, my daughter just
41:30
graduated from Capital this last year, and I asked her the other day.
41:35
I was like, how many tournaments did you win as a kid? And
41:37
she could literally only name one and she probably won about fifteen. Like,
41:43
we put too much emphasis quite often as parents into like results when children are
41:50
little, when we should be worried about the process. Right, And I
41:54
heard you mentioned that earlier, and I wanted to touch on that because that's
41:58
something that I'm I'm really big in, right. I talk about this at
42:01
almost every session, no matter the age group. I want these kids to
42:06
think of being the best version of themselves that they can be. Right,
42:10
whether you know when you were talking to Cannons earlier, Candons earlier, you
42:15
know, you know you were talking about being the best version of herself that
42:19
she could be. That's what I want these boys and girls to think about.
42:22
That's what I try to get my coaches to think about, and that's
42:24
what I try to get them to express on the kids. Also, if
42:28
you're not out here working on your own, you're not going to be the
42:30
best player you can be. You know, if you're not serious about getting
42:34
sleep, eating right, working out, taking care of your body, getting
42:38
good grades, all of these things that we have an opportunity to to to
42:44
to talk to kids about in this setting. Right, You're not their parent.
42:47
You know they're going to listen to you. Like I know that my
42:51
son who plays for Capitol right now, listens to coach Freeze way more than
42:55
he listens to me about his grades and stuff. Right, Like, his
42:59
grades shot up because he had a leader at Capitol High school boy soccer that
43:05
like focuses on their development as people. Right, So let's just back up
43:10
for one second, because I think you you dropped a couple of gems in
43:14
there, and I don't want them to get lost in this. And the
43:16
fact that when you focus number one, I think from what I'm hearing,
43:21
correct me if I'm wrong, the focus is organizationally about how this organization is
43:29
structured in order to develop kids. And I think in comparison and in contrast
43:35
to other sports, I mean, I think I would compare this most likely
43:39
to baseball, how they go through like a T ball coach, pitch and
43:43
all that sort of system. But when you talk about maybe youth football,
43:46
youth basketball, it seems to be a lot more adult centered, soation driven
43:55
how do you how does that happen? Like, how do you how do
44:00
you keep the focus to where the focus should be. So the very first
44:05
day you do some stuff that I'd like you to touch them so well,
44:08
the very stuff the very first day that I took the program over, right,
44:14
I was asked to take it over the west Side Soccer falling on some
44:19
some hard times. It was down to around fifteen players that were going to
44:22
return the next year. I met with the existing board and I kind of
44:27
went over goals. I was like, the first one, I want this
44:30
program to look like our community. Right, soccer generally is thought of as
44:36
upper class white kids playing soccer out in the suburbs, you know, or
44:40
always travel whatever. We have probably I don't I don't know the exact numbers,
44:45
but we're around sixty percent minority participation in west Side soccer, right,
44:51
Hollis to Senate. Right, we have teams. The U twelve girls team
44:53
that I coached this season, literally it was every it was seventeen little black
44:59
girls. I had zero. I mean, that's just the way it happened.
45:00
But like so, I wanted the program to look like the community.
45:05
I wanted the board to look like her community, right, So I make
45:08
sure that I purposely find board members that are from the West Side, the
45:14
East End that look like the kids that play, you know, and I
45:19
wanted our coaches to look like the community. And it's a lot harder when
45:23
basically all white people have been playing soccer, right, So to find you
45:30
know, black men and women to come and be coaches. And luckily,
45:32
you know, I found some magnificent Okay. And that's what education, and
45:37
the education piece comes into play, right. So when you sat down and
45:40
you say, hey, we're going to be about the kids that are from
45:45
our neighborhood, that look like our neighborhood, and our coaches and our board
45:50
are going to be from our neighborhood, everybody's focused on one thing, the
45:53
kids, right, And that's that's exactly what we set down to do from
45:57
the beginning, and see and and all. That's kind of to your point
46:00
or to the even to your question. When you talk about football and you
46:06
talk about basketball, and you talk about the coaches, you talk about a
46:10
host of some of the parents, it's it's not the development, it's it's
46:16
it's my kid, Like it's the attention is on that kid and or just
46:22
winning and for the most part, that coach can't handle it if he if
46:30
he doesn't win. And and we've had we've had this conversation, and I've
46:35
said it a thousand times, like you know, I, you know,
46:37
losing at Marshall. You know, I won maybe seven, eight, nine,
46:40
maybe max ten games in four years. But I wasn't gonna leave because
46:46
of the people, because of the coaches that were there that I felt were
46:52
invested in me and gives you and it'll give you prop and I and I
46:57
and I've said that I think those experiences are better then if you go youth,
47:08
middle school, high school, college and you're overly successful, your teams
47:14
are overly successful because at some point in time in your life, something is
47:17
going to go bad, something is going to go something's gonna go south,
47:22
And do can you and do you know how to handle that? And and
47:29
I want to get back to because I think, in addition to like I
47:32
said, just being able to handle that adversity, getting kids outside the comfort
47:37
zone, right, because if I'm the goalie and that's my thing and then
47:40
you pit me as a defender or at striker, then I'm outside of my
47:45
comfort zone. So I have to learn to be adapt and even that is
47:47
kind of building adversity within the confines of the organization in the structure. But
47:53
what I want to place emphasis on is that number one, there is an
47:59
organization and a structure, and you guys do have a like an end of
48:04
the season tournament where you need is competitive, keep scoring, you gotta win
48:07
thing. But what I noticed, and I went to that tournament this year,
48:12
and you do, and there's something very special that you or I don't
48:16
know, maybe Inmphasimus at this point that you guys do with the parents that
48:21
come to you guys games and what they're allowed to do and not do.
48:24
What is that? Yeah? So I mean for west Side, we have
48:29
a parent meeting before the season where you don't your kid, you don't know
48:32
which team your kid plays on until you come to the parent meeting. Then
48:37
we announce it and at that we give out like a handout. It's seven
48:39
pages long, and it's like what we expect from you as a parent.
48:44
It's like sideline decorum. It's like how you handle the ride home from the
48:49
games. It's what you talk to your kid about, how you ask them,
48:53
and it's just things that are common sense when you hear them, it's
48:57
like, well, what's the sideline decorum? Please expe bound on that.
49:00
Okay, So some of the things are like we want you to be a
49:04
reactive cheer. Like the worst thing that you can do is you know what,
49:07
you get, pass it, shoot it whatever, Like you're making the
49:09
decisions for him. You don't go into math class and tell them what the
49:13
answer is. We need them to make the decision out there, right,
49:16
So great shot, great pass? You know, way to hustle? Right,
49:22
So we want you to be reactive and you're cheering not proactive, right,
49:24
We don't want you to tell them what to do, right, don't
49:28
yell at the referee, right, like the what we don't we If you
49:31
yell at the referee, you get kicked out. That's that's zero like no
49:37
tolerance. Like I've kicked people out. People have not left, We've had
49:42
you know, we've had to have people removed. It's zero tolerance, right,
49:45
because a a lot of the referees for soccer teenagers. Right, you
49:51
can start refereeing when you're fourteen, and so you you really out here as
49:54
an adult yelling at a fourteen year old over an eight year old soccer game.
49:59
That's what you think is appropriate. Well, we don't think that's appropriate.
50:02
It's sound for you to go okay, So so just just entertain me
50:07
on this, because I guess maybe a purist or traditionalist in some sentiment would
50:13
think that this is some new wage pooh pooh. When trying to hold their
50:19
hands, you're not letting the kids be exposed. They may there has to
50:23
be pushed back on this philosophy that you guys have implemented. Hold on let
50:30
and I want to I want to kind of respond to that. I don't
50:32
have his answer, okay, but to your question what we are doing now,
50:40
we clearly know what's wrong. Yeah, I mean yeah, yeah.
50:45
And if you're a parent and you're hearing this and you're and if you're even
50:51
remotely offended or like, oh, I would never do that, you you're
50:57
wrong. But but I don't see. I don't think so, because when
51:00
you're used to doing it, like for him to tell me this, for
51:04
Chris to tell me what he's telling me, I have never even remotely heard
51:09
of me anything like that, man, So you can't say that they're wrong.
51:13
When we grew up, this is how we grew up and this is
51:15
this is our tradition and how we do this. So I'm saying, like,
51:21
how do you come back that the pushback like, what's just a response?
51:23
So what we've done by doing this and making that the expectation is it's
51:30
sort of empowered the parents to police themselves on the sideline. Like it's a
51:36
whole lot of hey, chill out house, like you know, you know,
51:39
we're not supposed to be doing that over here, you know, And
51:43
it's just created a better sideline dynamic, right, It's allowed people to also
51:49
understand that like, hey, you're probably embarrassing your kid yelling at the referee,
51:54
like when you hear somebody say that, Like not like when you're mad
51:59
and yelling, but like just in a setting where we're just sitting around talking,
52:01
because this is really the kind of atmosphere it is. It makes you
52:05
go, you know what, it probably is embarrassing. I mean because when
52:07
I went to the game, Bro, when I went to the game,
52:10
it was quiet, yeah, and there was some criticism of the refs,
52:16
but it wasn't like it was like the ref missed that call. Like parents
52:22
talking, It wasn't like yelling and ejecting it wasn't like and for me,
52:27
it's it kind of is a lot just because I'm used to the energy being
52:31
a little different. You see what I'm saying. Have we have we just
52:37
not thought to do that? In basketball? Have we not thought to do
52:42
that? In football? You have not thought to do that? I'm going
52:45
to be real honest. It's hard at the beginning, right, you have
52:49
to be willing as an adult administrator to go and tell people they got to
52:53
stop, right, And that's hard, you know, And like, luckily,
52:59
you know, the people around the program respected me and respected what we
53:04
were doing and they listened. You know, our problems aren't from the parents
53:08
that play for West Side. Our problems are always from the parents from the
53:12
other clubs, right, who aren't used to what we're trying to do.
53:15
And you know it, it was hard, But after a few years it
53:20
becomes a culture. Like I keep touching on that, the culture around the
53:23
program, the culture around the club. Yes, that's the problem when you
53:30
start talking about I'm already aware. I'm I'm I'm I'm coming in with my
53:36
visiting team and we're coming to your place and we're playing, and I'm already
53:40
aware of how this structure works there. I know how this is gonna go.
53:46
Now I go, I can go play Hollis and it's a it's a
53:51
whole nother thing. But I know when I'm coming to the West Side that
53:53
there's a structure there that our parents need to understand, our coaches need to
53:58
understand, and our kids need to That's powerful. Yeah, and see,
54:01
and this is why, like I wanted to have you on it, and
54:07
really we got to bring you back because we need you for like a whole
54:08
segment because no, because what I think is that when we talk about because
54:13
nobody talks about this, part of what we struggle with with youth basketball,
54:16
youth football in this area and probably state, is that we have a bad
54:22
culture associated with those sports, even baseball to a degree what I see,
54:27
But I think again baseball is different because you go through a whole maturation process.
54:31
But I think, particularly when you're talking about basketball and football, we
54:35
have a bad culture and the culture of it needs to change. Where it
54:39
is development over wins, is participation over saying. You know, the funny
54:45
thing about that is right, like we preach that and that's how we've structured
54:50
the whole program. Right, But the thing is is when you develop players,
54:52
the byproduct or that is you win. You win a lot. Like
54:57
frankly, like, we focus on this as our number one goal, and
55:01
we win a lot of end of season tournaments. And as the kids get
55:07
older and play, you know, and you know, obviously once they get
55:09
to be fourteen sixteen, we're playing like tournament games in league and whatever all
55:14
the time. And you know, we win a lot because of it,
55:19
because we focus when they're five to ten to twelve years old with development,
55:22
Like, the byproduct is winning. And that's what I'm saying. Football basketball,
55:27
there's very little development. It's very little development, and it is a
55:30
It is a whole lot of yelling and streaming at the officials, at the
55:37
coach, at your kid, telling your kid what he's supposed to do,
55:40
she's supposed to do. That is that is a complete norm for basketball and
55:47
football. And I don't even know. I don't even know how that groundwork
55:55
could even start. I think you would. I think how it starts,
56:00
is it has to start? Yeah, I don't, I don't. I
56:04
don't think. It ain't gotta be no big thing. And the thing,
56:07
like I said, I think that because I know that I coached one year
56:10
at the youth level. I've coached like middle school and high school and even
56:14
college, but I coached one year at the youth level, and at the
56:16
end of the season we went to like our little conference championship. We was
56:20
a game away from like the big championship. And I look back on the
56:23
season as a complete failure because I failed to develop the kids. I got
56:30
so obsessed with the winning part of it, yep, that I think I
56:35
lost the program, because even if we were less successful, I think that
56:38
it would have been more successful had it been a developmental piece as opposed to
56:44
me focusing solely on winning. Because to your point, coach, what happens
56:47
is that you just pit the ball in the fastest kids hands, he runs
56:51
around the corner, and if you can do that twenty times a game,
56:53
you'll do that just to win against the game, instead of having that kid
56:58
run the ball, throw the ball, block, play defense, do all
57:00
the things to see A couple to see exactly, because I know when we
57:07
was coming up playing for a Western Generals, you had to play you line
57:10
your first year or tight end if you were good. Mostly you're not coming
57:15
in playing running back your first year on whatever team you're on, it goes
57:19
towards that development, and I think we've lost that piece, and particularly with
57:22
football, yes, support them around the most. It's all it's just become
57:27
about winning. It's about nothing else. It totally is. And we're getting
57:31
we're getting ready to we got to kind of wind it down, but it
57:36
is. It is. It is a shame that sports has come specific sports
57:40
have become solely about winning and they're missing this teaching, this culture that you
57:51
guys have on the West Side. And and I'm I'm super happy and proud
57:57
that the fact that you know the kids that it is to can absolutely use
58:02
it and need it well. And yes, okay, question so how can
58:08
other sports or organization mimic this? So, I mean I think that creating
58:15
like we keep harping on it, but just creating a positive culture around everything,
58:20
right and putting the players at the middle of everything you do. Right.
58:23
I just like when we talk about participation, it's more than it's more
58:29
than just like in these games in the club, right when you when coach
58:34
mentioned to pick up like every Friday night all winter. We used to do
58:38
it all the time, but like it was just it got to be too
58:40
much for me. But we do free pick up like indoor soccer at the
58:44
King Center. We got a partnership, remember right, we got we had
58:46
forty fifty people come from all ages, college play at current college players to
58:51
little kids. We all play together Saturday mornings at Cato Park. We had
58:55
over sixty people would pick up this week, including current college players, adult
59:00
kids. We all play together. Right, Participation in soccer is different than
59:05
participation in football. It pretty much ends at high school for everybody with football.
59:09
Like I said, I'm forty eight, I still play every week,
59:12
like a couple of times a week. Like we're trying to create soccer players
59:16
for the rest of their life. Right, Like if you are you know
59:20
a track a track coach, or you tennis or baseball, softball, all
59:24
these things that you can keep playing for a long time. A lot of
59:28
this need you need to remember that you're trying to create healthy, active adults
59:32
also, right, And like if I can continue, I've been trying to
59:37
get House to come and play pick up with us for a while because I
59:39
think he would love soccer if he played once. But you know, how
59:44
about this, I'm about to see you all on a Saturday morning, I'm
59:47
gonna text both y'all right, like it's about being healthy, active adults.
59:52
Also, when these kids are ten years older than they are right now,
59:54
are thirty years older than they are right now. If it wasn't for the
59:58
coaches that made me love the game when I was little, I wouldn't be
1:00:01
playing now. All right, Well, we got to get out here,
1:00:06
so Chris, I appreciate it, and man, what a great, great,
1:00:09
great thing that you're doing. And again, I think that's one of
1:00:13
those kind of things that we we got to get out of the studio and
1:00:16
I want to actually get eyes on it myself. So all right, I'm
1:00:20

work, in no time, I'm doing everything that I worked and prayed.
