- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest sports stories
- 0:09Speaker 2: of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst. Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast, Perloff and Pabst. Paul, a
- 0:20Speaker 3: full weekend of college football. I know you were in heaven.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Five days of college football, a lot of couch time,
- 0:25Speaker 4: a bunch of remotes.
- 0:26Speaker 3: It was perfect.
- 0:27Speaker 4: There was drama in places we didn't expect drama. We
- 0:30Speaker 4: thought LSU-Clemson would be the feature game that we talk
- 0:32Speaker 4: about for days, not so fast.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Yeah, we talked about a ton of games coming this weekend.
- 0:36Speaker 3: We didn't talk that much about Michigan, Western Michigan, but
- 0:39Speaker 3: it's kind of all we've been talking about since then.
- 0:41Speaker 3: If you watch the Dan Patrick show, there was so
- 0:44Speaker 3: much analysis on it. It's a layered topic, Paul, but
- 0:47Speaker 3: take me back to Saturday night. What was your reaction
- 0:49Speaker 3: in real time when Michigan won on the Hail Mary?
- 0:52Speaker 4: So you're watching at home. I'm watching in a big
- 0:54Speaker 4: bar where there's TVs everywhere, so you can't really hear
- 0:56Speaker 4: what's going on. And Western Michigan is staying in that
- 0:58Speaker 4: game the whole way, and they force Michigan to be
- 1:01Speaker 4: in a do-or-die situation with a Hail Mary.
- 1:04Speaker 5: Underwood throws the ball. Ball goes out of bounds. Zeros.
- 1:07Speaker 4: The refs, it's over, Johnny. And they start running on
- 1:10Speaker 4: the field. And so, like, Michigan fans at the bars
- 1:13Speaker 4: that were, like, crying in their beer, and other people
- 1:15Speaker 4: were cheering because Western Michigan is just a great story.
- 1:18Speaker 5: Look, it's over.
- 1:19Speaker 3: There's zeros.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you celebrate? I'll be on the way back
- 1:23Speaker 4: to Kalamazoo. But then there just seemed to be this pause.
- 1:25Speaker 4: You see Kyle Whittingham of Michigan talking to the refs.
- 1:29Speaker 4: And then the refs are huddling. And whenever refs are huddling,
- 1:31Speaker 4: it's never.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Good for the other team.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I went straight to anger. I'll be honest. I
- 1:36Speaker 3: was very frustrated because I was rooting for the Cinderella.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I was rooting for Western Michigan. I thought Michigan was
- 1:41Speaker 3: disappointing from the get-go. I did not like the way
- 1:43Speaker 3: their offense was moving. So I was rooting for them,
- 1:46Speaker 3: and I was like, this is great. Got to stay
- 1:48Speaker 3: up and watch this awesome upset. And I felt robbed,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and I didn't even go to Western Michigan.
- 1:53Speaker 4: So they start lining up for the second Hail Mary.
- 1:55Speaker 4: It almost felt like a kicker. You know, they call
- 1:57Speaker 4: timeout to freeze them, and he gets a second look
- 1:59Speaker 4: at it. Bryce Underwood got a second look and threw
- 2:01Speaker 4: it to the front of the end zone. And before
- 2:03Speaker 4: the ball even came up, we're looking at each other,
- 2:05Speaker 4: the friends watching the game. Oh, of course Michigan's going
- 2:08Speaker 4: to win it here after this controversy. Of course he
- 2:11Speaker 4: hits the guy in the front end, and it's over.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You know, that's kind of why I'm giving the Big
- 2:16Speaker 3: Ten a slight pass here, Paul, because it was a
- 2:18Speaker 3: perfect storm. How many times have we seen this where
- 2:20Speaker 3: there was an argument over one second? And what are
- 2:23Speaker 3: the odds of you hitting the Hail Mary? Even with
- 2:25Speaker 3: the mulligan, it's still a very low percentage play.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Well, I think what still is outstanding to people is
- 2:31Speaker 4: why the replay was called for in the first place.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Did Kyle Whittingham call for it? I think people at
- 2:36Speaker 4: home didn't even know there's two clocks in college football.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I think everyone knows the refs keep backup time. I
- 2:40Speaker 4: always thought that was a backup plan in case the
- 2:42Speaker 4: scoreboard went down. I thought NBC or ESPN or ABC
- 2:46Speaker 4: controlled the time, and what you saw on the field
- 2:48Speaker 4: was it.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So what would your solution be if this case comes
- 2:52Speaker 3: up again?
- 2:53Speaker 4: Well, I guess you would say what happens on the
- 2:55Speaker 4: field is the final answer, and you have to get
- 2:58Speaker 4: it dialed in the two clocks before the game ends
- 3:00Speaker 4: because parsing through that and the guy's foot on the
- 3:03Speaker 4: back line, it doesn't match what people see at home.
- 3:06Speaker 4: And when people at home see that, the Big Ten
- 3:08Speaker 4: office was involved in the replay. This wasn't a Big
- 3:11Speaker 4: Ten on Big Ten crime. This is Western Michigan. This
- 3:14Speaker 4: is a once-in-a-lifetime win that felt like it was taken
- 3:16Speaker 4: from them.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw Fox's Mike Pereira, of course, officiating experts,
- 3:21Speaker 3: say that in the NFL, if this comes up, you
- 3:22Speaker 3: always go to the TV copy.
- 3:24Speaker 6: Yes.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And I think, I hope the Big Ten learned, go
- 3:28Speaker 3: to whatever the TV says, because people want to see
- 3:31Speaker 3: what's actually happening. You can't have, quote-unquote, a secret clock.
- 3:34Speaker 3: It's not a secret clock, but you have to defer...
- 3:37Speaker 3: to the TV clock, so next time this happens, whatever
- 3:40Speaker 3: NBC has, that should be it.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Right, and what happened all night, at least on social
- 3:43Speaker 4: media and people who watch college football and live on
- 3:46Speaker 4: social media, they're waiting for the Big Ten statement.
- 3:48Speaker 5: And the Big Ten.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Statement came out a couple hours later, and it came
- 3:51Speaker 4: out in this weird font that looked like something from
- 3:53Speaker 4: Stranger Things, and it didn't satisfy anyone's curiosity because it
- 3:57Speaker 4: felt like the Big Ten was getting their house in
- 3:59Speaker 4: order for this statement. But the average fan thinks that
- 4:01Speaker 4: that game was stolen. Look at that font there, Perloff.
- 4:03Speaker 4: That looks like a book from the 80s, like a
- 4:07Speaker 4: crime novel.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah, for some reason, the statement didn't really help the
- 4:10Speaker 3: Big Ten. Now, let me ask you this question, Paul.
- 4:13Speaker 3: When you look at all of college football, there's a
- 4:14Speaker 3: lot of conferences. It's so different from the NFL where
- 4:17Speaker 3: everything comes through one office. I'm kind of wondering, is
- 4:20Speaker 3: this a growing pain of college football where you see NIL? Now,
- 4:24Speaker 3: you get a Western Michigan against a Michigan. That's going
- 4:27Speaker 3: to be competitive. Now you have all these different conferences
- 4:29Speaker 3: and all these different networks. Do they need to really
- 4:31Speaker 3: solidify this and have a plan going forward?
- 4:34Speaker 5: That's a bigger picture.
- 4:35Speaker 4: There is no unifying body in college football. The NCAA
- 4:38Speaker 4: doesn't oversee the clocks. It's like the conference and the networks,
- 4:41Speaker 4: and it's different from game to game.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I'm setting you up to be college football czar here, Paul.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I say everything has to come under one roof. So
- 4:48Speaker 3: in situations like this, the Big Ten doesn't have a
- 4:50Speaker 3: different thing than the ACC and the SEC. ACC has
- 4:54Speaker 3: the immediate. You get to hear the officials now. So
- 4:57Speaker 3: I think that transparency is the number one thing, and
- 4:59Speaker 3: there are a lot of lessons out of this. A
- 5:01Speaker 3: lot has to be different next time.
- 5:03Speaker 4: It was a very interesting postgame. The Western Michigan head coach,
- 5:07Speaker 4: he didn't go scorched earth. He said, I'll let the
- 5:09Speaker 4: others fight my battle for me. But it was also
- 5:11Speaker 4: interesting because Western Michigan got paid $ 1. 5 million to be there.
- 5:15Speaker 4: They're coming back to Michigan in 2029. I don't think
- 5:18Speaker 4: Michigan's ever going to Kalamazoo to play home and home.
- 5:21Speaker 4: But it felt like one of those moments that's gone forever.
- 5:24Speaker 3: That's true. But can a loss be a win in
- 5:27Speaker 3: the sense that when they're picking the group of five
- 5:29Speaker 3: playoff teams, And if Western Michigan runs the table, they
- 5:32Speaker 3: have Boise on September 26th ball, who is a lot
- 5:35Speaker 3: of people's favorite to get that spot. If Western Michigan
- 5:37Speaker 3: runs the table. Will everybody count this as a win?
- 5:41Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 5:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 5: And the other way, this is a horrible win for Michigan.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 5:46Speaker 5: This might as well have been a loss.
- 5:48Speaker 3: This is worse than a loss.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Boise had a better week than Michigan.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yeah. No, Michigan's at a tie for that last playoff spot.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I think the committee's going to remember back in the
- 5:57Speaker 3: beginning of September and say, no, we're not letting them
- 5:59Speaker 3: get away with anything. Right.
- 6:00Speaker 4: You could win and still lose in college football. A
- 6:02Speaker 4: lot more games to chop up. The game we thought
- 6:04Speaker 4: was going to be a game of the weekend, LSU
- 6:06Speaker 4: versus Clemson. That was a no-show. Back in the day
- 6:09Speaker 4: when someone didn't show up for work, a no-call, no-show.
- 6:11Speaker 4: That's what happens with Clemson football. At no point did
- 6:14Speaker 4: that feel like a football game. And LSU stepped on
- 6:17Speaker 4: the gas. They didn't pump the brakes in any way.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Sam Levitt, the new quarterback that transferred from Arizona State,
- 6:22Speaker 4: he did a little more running than passing, but he
- 6:25Speaker 4: looked fantastic. And that was a 10-point spread. That was
- 6:28Speaker 4: considered a nice game.
- 6:29Speaker 3: A possible game.
- 6:30Speaker 5: And it was non-competitive.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yeah, LSU outrushed them 309-40. That's not good. I mean,
- 6:36Speaker 3: that's what you expect when Michigan plays a MAAC team.
- 6:39Speaker 3: This made the ACC and Clemson look like a Bush
- 6:42Speaker 3: League conference compared to the SEC. We call this on Friday.
- 6:47Speaker 3: I lean more towards you've got to use the transfer portal.
- 6:49Speaker 3: You've got to use the NIL. I think Lane Kiffin
- 6:52Speaker 3: made an emphatic statement with this win.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Yeah, Lane Kiffin made a statement at halftime. He was
- 6:56Speaker 4: rallying the troops, and he didn't step off the gas
- 6:58Speaker 4: in any way. Lane Kiffin, even in the pregame, he's
- 7:01Speaker 4: sampling Morgan Wallen with his walkout.
- 7:04Speaker 5: And he had Libby.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Dunn and Theo Vaughn as his walkout crew when he's
- 7:07Speaker 4: walking through the Tiger fans.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty cool. I mean, you said it, I think,
- 7:12Speaker 3: last week. You've got to embrace the bad guys.
- 7:14Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 5: He's stepping into it.
- 7:15Speaker 4: All right, does this say more about Clemson going forward
- 7:17Speaker 4: or LSU going forward?
- 7:18Speaker 3: Actually, I think it says more about Clemson, as in
- 7:20Speaker 3: we may be done with Davos.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Are you calling the season?
- 7:24Speaker 3: I'm calling the season. Is that allowed?
- 7:26Speaker 4: We said on Not So Fast you never say it's
- 7:28Speaker 4: over before it's over, but you may be right.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I mean, listen, they had a lot of pro players
- 7:33Speaker 3: last year and didn't win anything. All those pro players
- 7:36Speaker 3: are gone. They did not replace them. How are they
- 7:38Speaker 3: going to get better? This was embarrassing. I mean, I
- 7:41Speaker 3: hate to say one loss counts for more than one loss,
- 7:43Speaker 3: but in this case, you're not what your record says.
- 7:46Speaker 3: This is a bad, bad 0-1.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yeah, you don't aspire to be in the pinstripe bowl.
- 7:50Speaker 4: No offense if you're Clemson football. And I think in
- 7:52Speaker 4: two weeks, Clemson versus UNC in the buyout bowl with
- 7:56Speaker 4: Bill Belichick.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Oh! Yeah, I mean, that's a must-win. You don't want
- 8:01Speaker 3: to say must-win ever. That's another thing. So we're doing,
- 8:04Speaker 3: you know, is it over and must-win in the first month,
- 8:07Speaker 3: and I say yes.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it's still technically summer.
- 8:09Speaker 4: The other game, Boise versus Oregon, that was a better
- 8:12Speaker 4: game than you expected. We actually said on Not So Fast,
- 8:14Speaker 4: don't sleep on Boise.
- 8:15Speaker 5: They're always good.
- 8:17Speaker 4: But Oregon football in the second half, buzzsaw. Dante Moore,
- 8:20Speaker 4: the second half looked like real Oregon.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Well, first half was scary, though. Yeah. Because a lot
- 8:24Speaker 3: of people picked them to win the title. I was
- 8:26Speaker 3: leaning towards them for the title. I don't know. I
- 8:29Speaker 3: saw some vulnerability. I know what you're talking about. Dante
- 8:31Speaker 3: Moore was awesome in the second half. But did you
- 8:33Speaker 3: see a national championship team that can go toe-to-toe with
- 8:36Speaker 3: Ohio State, go toe-to-toe with Indiana?
- 8:39Speaker 4: In the second half I did. By the way, those
- 8:40Speaker 4: uniforms are first ballot. Just want to throw that in there.
- 8:43Speaker 4: But the second half, it's like they outlasted them and
- 8:46Speaker 4: out-talented them in the second half.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I actually walked away with a little different vibe
- 8:50Speaker 3: from this one, where I said to myself, I'm glad
- 8:52Speaker 3: I didn't pick Oregon to win it all.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Yep.
- 8:54Speaker 4: All right, let's get to some NFL news. We're a
- 8:56Speaker 4: day away. A little NFL news over the weekend. It's
- 8:59Speaker 4: mostly college football, but some NFL news. The Falcons named
- 9:02Speaker 4: Tua the starter. If this is health-related with Pennix, your thoughts.
- 9:05Speaker 4: If it's not health-related, your thoughts.
- 9:07Speaker 3: So Michael Pennix said that he wasn't quite 100%. I
- 9:11Speaker 3: think it's totally health-related because there's no upside with Tua.
- 9:15Speaker 3: We saw Tua played a little bit better in preseason
- 9:17Speaker 3: week three, but he really struggled. He was down in
- 9:19Speaker 3: Miami with a great offense, and he was good. I
- 9:21Speaker 3: have a number that surprised me. He's 44-32 as a
- 9:24Speaker 3: starter in the NFL. That's good. When Tua plays and
- 9:27Speaker 3: he's healthy, he's been productive.
- 9:29Speaker 4: It feels like we've seen his best work in 23
- 9:31Speaker 4: and 24.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I know what you're saying. So Tua is an
- 9:34Speaker 3: insurance policy for Penix, and they had to go to
- 9:37Speaker 3: it because Penix is not ready. You have to see
- 9:39Speaker 3: what you've got in Penix.
- 9:40Speaker 4: It does seem like that, that Tua is in a
- 9:42Speaker 4: holding pattern, like a high-end holding pattern quarterback. But you
- 9:45Speaker 4: drafted Penix high in the draft. You changed the whole
- 9:47Speaker 4: direction of your franchise. And if you don't give Penix
- 9:50Speaker 4: a really good look, 10, 12, 13 games. Why did
- 9:53Speaker 4: you draft him in the first place?
- 9:54Speaker 3: I don't like anything Atlanta's done team-building-wise. You know, they
- 9:57Speaker 3: kept taking skilled position players. They took Bijan, Drake, London,
- 10:00Speaker 3: Kyle Pitts, and then Michael Penix. They have a very
- 10:03Speaker 3: old offensive line that's going to be injury-prone. They haven't
- 10:06Speaker 3: really built a tough defense. So I think that this
- 10:09Speaker 3: is not a good situation anywhere around. And even though
- 10:12Speaker 3: Penix is young, Paul, they might be watching college football
- 10:15Speaker 3: on Saturdays like us and thinking– That's our future.
- 10:17Speaker 4: But you know what drives me crazy about the Falcons
- 10:19Speaker 4: is you need 10 wins and you're hosting a playoff game.
- 10:22Speaker 5: You know, I mean, you may need nine wins in
- 10:24Speaker 5: that division to host a playoff game. Their schedule, it's
- 10:27Speaker 5: not the hardest in the world.
- 10:28Speaker 4: They've got a lot of winnable games there, but it
- 10:30Speaker 4: always feels like the Falcons are one step away from being,
- 10:33Speaker 4: I like them.
- 10:33Speaker 5: I love them.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah. You say 10 wins. We've been waiting for this
- 10:37Speaker 3: team to get 10 wins in the last few years.
- 10:39Speaker 3: I picked the Falcons almost every year. So I don't
- 10:42Speaker 3: know why they're going to get the 10 wins now.
- 10:43Speaker 3: I mean, Unfortunately, 8-9 will also get you there in
- 10:46Speaker 3: the NFC South. All right, coming up, we'll stick with
- 10:48Speaker 3: the NFL. Have Josh Allen and other soon-to-be 30-year-old quarterbacks
- 10:52Speaker 3: already lost their best chance to win a Super Bowl?
- 10:55Speaker 3: We'll explain next on Not So Fast.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Pearl, it's time for the midday pick-me-up. We all love
- 11:02Speaker 4: this one from the weekend.
- 11:03Speaker 5: A little baseball. Look at the Toronto fans.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Ah, look at this.
- 11:08Speaker 5: Guys, let's team up. We can do this. A little help,
- 11:10Speaker 5: a little help, a little help. And there we have it.
- 11:15Speaker 3: You have no idea how many times this hit my
- 11:17Speaker 3: social media feed, Paul, and I don't know what that
- 11:19Speaker 3: says about me. I've seen this clip at least a
- 11:21Speaker 3: thousand times.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Yeah, is it the highlight of Toronto season?
- 11:23Speaker 7: Who knows?
- 11:23Speaker 4: But awesome way to see the fans working together. We
- 11:26Speaker 4: love that on Not So Fast.
- 11:27Speaker 5: That was great. Midday Pick Me Up, we always love that.
- 11:29Speaker 4: All right, let's get to it. It's time for Warm Takes.
- 11:32Speaker 4: You kids at home, we don't want you getting burned.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Just a little warm stuff from the college football.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Weekend and NFL as well.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 11:39Speaker 4: There's a thing we like to call the Sept Heisman
- 11:41Speaker 4: on the Dan Patrick Show and here on Not So Fast.
- 11:43Speaker 4: It's a person who dominates college football in September. The
- 11:46Speaker 4: Sept Heisman rarely wins the Heisman Trophy because they peak
- 11:49Speaker 4: too early. Your guy, Perloff, Malachi Toney, you called this
- 11:52Speaker 4: on Friday on Not So Fast, who's your Heisman pick.
- 11:55Speaker 4: He dominated Stanford the other day, and that's saying it light.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Twelve catches over 200 yards, three touchdowns. He was the
- 12:01Speaker 4: focal point. He's one of those guys you can't take
- 12:03Speaker 4: your eyes off of. So he is in great shape
- 12:05Speaker 4: for the Heisman. Jeremiah Smith, the wide receiver at Ohio State,
- 12:09Speaker 4: also dominated week one. Jeremiah Smith looks great. Everyone knows
- 12:12Speaker 4: him already. They've got brand recognition based off last year
- 12:15Speaker 4: and Jeremiah Smith a couple years ago.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Everyone knows this guy.
- 12:18Speaker 4: It's really, really tough to win the Heisman in September.
- 12:20Speaker 4: It's almost technically impossible because the voting is in December.
- 12:24Speaker 4: But I think it's so refreshing to have two wide
- 12:26Speaker 4: receivers battling because historically this doesn't happen. The last pure
- 12:30Speaker 4: wide receiver to win the Heisman was Deontay Smith, the
- 12:33Speaker 4: Bama a few years ago. Remember, he came out of
- 12:35Speaker 4: nowhere because of the Jalen Waddell injury. Remember, he broke
- 12:37Speaker 4: his ankle. But two wide receivers. Desmond Howard won it
- 12:41Speaker 4: more than a generation ago, but he had to use
- 12:43Speaker 4: return stuff.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Look where we are.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Smith is in the mix. Malachi Toney is in the mix. Now,
- 12:49Speaker 4: will they split votes with Julian Sayen and Mensah? Yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 4: that can happen. But two wide receivers in the mix
- 12:54Speaker 4: in September, I'm all about it.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I love it. You know, there are a lot of
- 12:57Speaker 3: quarterbacks in the mix, too, so maybe those guys split
- 12:59Speaker 3: their vote. Malachi Toney, in the first drive, I ran
- 13:03Speaker 3: straight to the betting app and I'm like, I'm putting
- 13:05Speaker 3: even more on him for the Heisman.
- 13:06Speaker 5: That was your pick on Friday.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Yeah, he caught three of the four, three of the
- 13:09Speaker 3: first four plays were Malachi Toney. Actually, Paul, I understand
- 13:12Speaker 3: we have some sound of me on Malachi Toney. I'm
- 13:17Speaker 3: going wide receiver, do everything, man. Malachi Toney out of
- 13:20Speaker 3: University of Miami. I think he's still 18 years old,
- 13:22Speaker 3: but he's the most exciting player in the country. I
- 13:25Speaker 3: think that team is going to be unbelievable. I think
- 13:27Speaker 3: the offense is going to run through him That's like.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Going third person. Not so fast, Perloff.
- 13:32Speaker 4: You setting up your own callback for your thing. I
- 13:35Speaker 4: tried to give you credit three minutes ago, and you
- 13:36Speaker 4: still brought back the clip.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Proud of you.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Malachi Toney, by the way, is almost a health concern
- 13:41Speaker 3: for the rest of the ACC. I swear, Stanford DBs,
- 13:44Speaker 3: about three of them broke their ankles trying to keep
- 13:45Speaker 3: with this guy.
- 13:46Speaker 5: They have a good athletic department, though.
- 13:47Speaker 3: You knew he was coming, and you could not stop
- 13:50Speaker 3: him in any way.
- 13:51Speaker 4: It reminds me of Randy Moss in college. Remember Tavon
- 13:54Speaker 4: Austin at West Virginia?
- 13:55Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 13:55Speaker 5: We know we can't stop him. Why bother trying?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Yeah, he was awesome. Okay, my warm takes on another
- 14:00Speaker 3: awesome college football player, Trinidad Chambliss, quarterback Ole Miss. Ole
- 14:05Speaker 3: Miss with a tough, hard-fought win over Louisville. Now, Trinidad Chambliss...
- 14:10Speaker 3: is not necessarily a first-round draft prospect. And you know
- 14:13Speaker 3: I'm a Moneyball guy, Paul. Yes. You know, I love
- 14:15Speaker 3: my analytics. I've seen Moneyball with Brad Pitt at least
- 14:18Speaker 3: five times. I identify more with Jonah Hill than Brad Pitt. Shocker.
- 14:22Speaker 3: From a look standpoint. Now, all the Moneyball reasons say
- 14:26Speaker 3: that you do not take Trinidad Chambliss high. He's 24,
- 14:29Speaker 3: first of all, and he's just a skunch below six feet.
- 14:33Speaker 3: So we're talking Kyler Murray, taller than Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson—
- 14:38Speaker 3: Sort of that vein of quarterback. And usually that is
- 14:40Speaker 3: tough because you can't see over the line and you
- 14:43Speaker 3: have to block a certain way. I don't care. I
- 14:45Speaker 3: don't care about any of the money ball stuff. The
- 14:47Speaker 3: way the ball came off his hand was incredible. His
- 14:50Speaker 3: long passes, especially in the second half where he just dominated,
- 14:54Speaker 3: you could just eyeball this guy and say that's an
- 14:56Speaker 3: NFL quarterback. Not only is he probably, I'm going to
- 14:59Speaker 3: say it, the best quarterback in college football, he's so clutch.
- 15:03Speaker 3: It's just explosive. The ball comes off like fire, Paul.
- 15:06Speaker 3: That is not an analytic. That is Perloff's eyeballs. I
- 15:10Speaker 3: love what I'm seeing out of Trinidad Chambliss, and I
- 15:12Speaker 3: think he's going a lot higher in the draft than
- 15:14Speaker 3: we thought.
- 15:15Speaker 4: This is you going against the grain on yourself because
- 15:17Speaker 4: you're notoriously heightest when it comes to quarterbacks.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I didn't like Kyler Murray at the top
- 15:20Speaker 3: of the draft. Right.
- 15:21Speaker 5: If he was two inches, three inches taller, you may have.
- 15:23Speaker 3: But I'll give you my comp for him. Baker Mayfield. Okay.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Yeah, about the same size. Hard to deal with.
- 15:30Speaker 5: Trinidad Chambliss is fantastic.
- 15:31Speaker 4: I think he's one of those guys where he'll probably
- 15:33Speaker 4: go like top five picks of the second round.
- 15:36Speaker 3: No, show bet. I think he gets in the first round.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Show bet.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that some team is going to ignore
- 15:42Speaker 3: the analytics, ignore the numbers.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Keep it friendly?
- 15:45Speaker 3: Yeah, let's keep it friendly. I say Trinidad Chambliss is
- 15:48Speaker 3: a first-round pick.
- 15:48Speaker 5: 20 bucks on Trinidad Chambliss? Put that down, Scotty.
- 15:51Speaker 4: All right, let's get to my next warm take here.
- 15:54Speaker 4: I want to go back to Western Michigan versus Michigan.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Nobody's necessarily rooting for or against Michigan or for or
- 15:59Speaker 4: against Western Michigan, but when you see the end of
- 16:01Speaker 4: that game and you see Western Michigan, a directional school
- 16:04Speaker 4: about to take down Michigan, the big house, you have
- 16:07Speaker 4: to start rooting for them because you're not rooting for them.
- 16:09Speaker 4: You're rooting for the story. And when this happened right here,
- 16:12Speaker 4: you think it's over. And you think, I just saw
- 16:14Speaker 4: one of the biggest upsets in recent or all-time college
- 16:17Speaker 4: football history. On this show Friday, I think we talked to,
- 16:20Speaker 4: on Thursday, we talked to Nicole Auerbach about the Appalachian
- 16:23Speaker 4: State win over Michigan a generation ago.
- 16:26Speaker 5: This was that.
- 16:26Speaker 4: This was this generation's version of that. And it got
- 16:29Speaker 4: taken away. And whatever you think of the clock and
- 16:32Speaker 4: the Big Ten and whoever took this away, Sports fans
- 16:35Speaker 4: were bothered and bummed. I was with two of my
- 16:37Speaker 4: friends watching the game. And when the ruling happened and
- 16:40Speaker 4: Western Michigan lost, my buddy Phil, who's always negative, by
- 16:43Speaker 4: the way, said, can we just go home? He didn't
- 16:45Speaker 4: go to Western Michigan. He's not from Kalamazoo. He wanted
- 16:47Speaker 4: to call it a night because that's how bummed he were.
- 16:49Speaker 4: I think as sports fans, we were sports bummed by
- 16:52Speaker 4: that call because a moment, a great moment was taken
- 16:55Speaker 4: away for us.
- 16:55Speaker 5: And we live for those moments.
- 16:57Speaker 3: You know, It didn't feel like Appalachian State in the
- 16:59Speaker 3: sense that you could tell these teams were evenly matched.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Even-ish.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Maybe we didn't see it coming. It didn't feel David
- 17:06Speaker 3: Goliath to me. I think Michigan's about to have a very,
- 17:10Speaker 3: very long season. If Michigan had gone 3-9 and Western
- 17:13Speaker 3: Michigan had won that game, would it be remembered as
- 17:16Speaker 3: David versus Goliath? I'm not so sure.
- 17:18Speaker 5: It's the moment, though.
- 17:19Speaker 4: You have a Hail Mary, Western Michigan directional school. That's
- 17:22Speaker 4: not Appalachian State. If you're at Western Michigan, you could
- 17:25Speaker 4: just roll into Ann Arbor any day and just go scoreboard.
- 17:28Speaker 4: For three years until they play again. I mean, look
- 17:29Speaker 4: at this guy. It was taken away from him. And
- 17:32Speaker 4: you're never getting this chance again. I know you play there,
- 17:35Speaker 4: Western Michigan, three years. But unless you're a freshman, no chance.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Yeah, directional. It's not the one where J.J. Watt and
- 17:40Speaker 3: Antonio Brown went.
- 17:41Speaker 5: Central Michigan. That's my Chippewas.
- 17:43Speaker 3: That's your Chippewas. Okay.
- 17:44Speaker 8: All right.
- 17:44Speaker 3: I'm going back to the NFL for my next warm take.
- 17:47Speaker 3: I cannot believe this. Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe
- 17:51Speaker 3: Burrow all turned 30 this year, Paul, or this season. Now,
- 17:55Speaker 3: none of them have won the Super Bowl. Burrow, of course,
- 17:58Speaker 3: got to the Super Bowl. I think it's getting late
- 18:01Speaker 3: early for these three quarterbacks. I mean, they are good enough, obviously,
- 18:04Speaker 3: to win a Super Bowl. But if they don't do
- 18:06Speaker 3: it this year, then I think you're going to start
- 18:08Speaker 3: to hear a lot of noise in Cincinnati, Buffalo, and
- 18:12Speaker 3: believe it or not, Baltimore. They're good enough quarterbacks to
- 18:15Speaker 3: make the Super Bowl, but is the team around them
- 18:16Speaker 3: good enough? Now, Cincinnati spent a lot to fix their defense,
- 18:20Speaker 3: puts even more pressure on Joe Burrow. Buffalo fires their coach,
- 18:24Speaker 3: brings in a new coach who is Josh Allen's guy.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Pressure there. And, of course, Baltimore, the odds are they're
- 18:30Speaker 3: second in Super Bowl odds. They should be a Super
- 18:32Speaker 3: Bowl team. Paul, I am worried that if these teams
- 18:35Speaker 3: do not win, we're going to start to see those
- 18:37Speaker 3: three quarterbacks talking about maybe I have to pull Matthew Stafford.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Maybe I have to go to another team to win
- 18:44Speaker 3: the Super Bowl.
- 18:44Speaker 4: That I could see, and that's a pretty warm take
- 18:46Speaker 4: that they may have to end their career elsewhere. You
- 18:48Speaker 4: look at it, if you think these guys have six
- 18:50Speaker 4: more chances, really, realistically, and they have to get past
- 18:53Speaker 4: each other and then win the title. Joe Burrow is
- 18:55Speaker 4: that close, and if Aaron Donald didn't sack him, he
- 18:58Speaker 4: would have had his Super Bowl.
- 18:59Speaker 5: But it does feel a little bit like 80s.
- 19:01Speaker 4: NBA, 90s NBA. There's no Michael Jordan. Mahomes isn't that anymore.
- 19:05Speaker 4: But if you're Patrick Ewing, how many chances do you get?
- 19:08Speaker 4: If you're Barkley, you had one chance. If you're Carl Malone,
- 19:11Speaker 4: you had your chance. You may only get one.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Well, also, there's some quarterbacks coming up. Caleb Williams, maybe. Obviously,
- 19:17Speaker 3: Drake Maywood, he did last year. Bo Nix. Bo Nix.
- 19:20Speaker 3: And there's a great draft class coming in next year.
- 19:23Speaker 3: So there could be a Tim Duncan. Think about it.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Tim Duncan came in 99 post-Jordan, and all those guys
- 19:28Speaker 3: didn't win because then they had to deal with the Spurs.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Man, we are comping the heck out of this segment.
- 19:32Speaker 4: All right, let's have a little game time. We love
- 19:34Speaker 4: to play games here and not so fast. This one
- 19:36Speaker 4: is called Who Said It? We'll play the clip. I
- 19:38Speaker 4: think it's football-related. That's the only hint I got from
- 19:40Speaker 4: the control room. Who said this, Pearl?
- 19:43Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 19:45Speaker 5: It's a big.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Culture shock, coming to a place like this, that's not
- 19:48Speaker 4: a diss towards anyone else. but it's just different the
- 19:51Speaker 4: way Coach runs it.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Gotta be a new guy.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Is it the way Coach runs it up? Meaning Lane
- 19:57Speaker 3: Kiffin in LSU?
- 19:58Speaker 5: Are you going Sam Leavitt?
- 19:59Speaker 3: Yes, Sam Leavitt. I agree.
- 20:01Speaker 5: We're both Sam Leavitt, LSU quarterback.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Here we go. You know, it's a big culture shock
- 20:08Speaker 3: coming to a place like this and That's not a
- 20:11Speaker 3: diss towards anyone else, but it's just different, right, the
- 20:13Speaker 3: way Coach runs it.
- 20:15Speaker 4: By the way, Josh Hoover looks like a football guy.
- 20:17Speaker 4: He got hit in the first quarter, the new IU quarterback,
- 20:19Speaker 4: and he did not go to the sidelines.
- 20:21Speaker 5: He pulled a J.J.
- 20:22Speaker 6: Watt.
- 20:22Speaker 5: If you get bloody, you stay with it.
- 20:25Speaker 4: So if you're all bloody during a football game, you
- 20:27Speaker 4: don't go to the sidelines and wipe it off.
- 20:28Speaker 5: You miss that great shot. Look at that.
- 20:31Speaker 3: That is... Legendary. Yeah, it was early in the game, too,
- 20:35Speaker 3: and not a lot was going on. And then you
- 20:37Speaker 3: look over at Josh Hoover.
- 20:39Speaker 4: That's a ticky-tack face mask call, by the way.
- 20:40Speaker 3: What are you talking about? Oh, you're being sarcastic. He's
- 20:44Speaker 3: like the exorcist right there. Josh Hoover played pretty well,
- 20:47Speaker 3: by the way. Yes. He throws a pretty nice ball.
- 20:49Speaker 3: I don't think that was much of a challenge.
- 20:50Speaker 5: You poo-pooed Josh Hoover last month.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I know, I know. Well, listen, we do not know
- 20:54Speaker 3: what Indiana's going to be. You really couldn't tell on Saturday.
- 20:57Speaker 3: But he's right about Signetti being different than Sonny Dykes
- 21:00Speaker 3: at TCU. I believe that Signetti, he's that coach. He's
- 21:04Speaker 3: like the Belichick of college football.
- 21:06Speaker 5: Nice comp.
- 21:06Speaker 4: All right, one more round of who said it. We're
- 21:08Speaker 4: both 0 for 1. Who said this, Perloff?
- 21:11Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Outside the building, our building, there can be a narrative
- 21:16Speaker 4: that it's easy, that college football is easy, and we
- 21:18Speaker 4: should steamroll teams.
- 21:19Speaker 5: The reality is a really good team with some really
- 21:22Speaker 5: good players.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I know this one. This is obvious. This is Oregon
- 21:25Speaker 3: coach Dan Lanning.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Dan Lanning's a good call.
- 21:28Speaker 4: I can't call up that. I'm going to go Ryan
- 21:29Speaker 4: Day just to be counter. Ryan Day of Ohio State.
- 21:32Speaker 5: What do we got?
- 21:35Speaker 1: Outside of this building, our building, there can be a
- 21:39Speaker 1: narrative that it's easy.
- 21:41Speaker 3: College football is easy and we should steamroll teams. The
- 21:45Speaker 3: reality is that's a really good Wisconsin team with some
- 21:47Speaker 3: really good players. I'm going to take credit for Dan
- 21:50Speaker 3: Lanning because that would have worked for him as well.
- 21:53Speaker 5: It would have.
- 21:54Speaker 4: We're both 0-2 in this game. We're playing pretty well,
- 21:56Speaker 4: but that is a little bit of C.J. Carr talking
- 21:58Speaker 4: about the win. Nice win defensively, not so much on offense.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Yeah, C.J. Carr, by the way, I had high expectations.
- 22:04Speaker 3: He's got to pick it up a little bit.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Yeah, he's got to pick it up, and he will.
- 22:06Speaker 4: He's got some games where he can easily pick it up.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Coming up next, we will go to, oh, a little
- 22:11Speaker 4: AFC North. No, AFC East, NFC East breakdown, getting you
- 22:15Speaker 4: ready for the NFL season coming up tomorrow night.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Stick around. This is Not So Fast.
- 22:21Speaker 3: The Patriots run was great, but I can't act like
- 22:28Speaker 3: they didn't have the record that they had and I
- 22:31Speaker 3: didn't see what I've seen in the playoffs. Their schedule
- 22:33Speaker 3: was very weak. The weakest, actually. And then if we
- 22:38Speaker 3: look at how Drake may play in the playoffs, it
- 22:40Speaker 3: wasn't great. By the way, if you weren't aware, New
- 22:43Speaker 3: England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks tomorrow on NBC. Cheers.
- 22:48Speaker 5: It's like Wayne's World product placement.
- 22:50Speaker 3: I think I'm going to watch that game. Yeah, why not?
- 22:52Speaker 5: Super Bowl rematch.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Super Bowl rematch. I just looked at it. I'm seeing
- 22:56Speaker 3: Seahawks at three and a half point favorites. It's interesting
- 22:59Speaker 3: what McCoy said. I don't think a lot of people
- 23:01Speaker 3: are taking the Patriots too seriously right now.
- 23:04Speaker 4: No, I think people look at that as a team
- 23:06Speaker 4: that overachieved and they'll come back to earth a little bit.
- 23:08Speaker 5: But we'll talk about that because we're going to get
- 23:10Speaker 5: to our previews. Here we go.
- 23:11Speaker 4: We have threat level, AFC East, NFC East. I'm going
- 23:15Speaker 4: to set you up, Pearl. How threatening are these teams?
- 23:18Speaker 4: I know there's some that are maybe non-threatening. but I
- 23:20Speaker 4: guess some type of threat level that gives the people
- 23:22Speaker 4: some hope. Let's start with in the AFC East, the
- 23:25Speaker 4: Miami Dolphins. How do you feel about the Dolphins plus
- 23:27Speaker 4: 4,000 to win the Super Bowl?
- 23:30Speaker 3: Is there such a thing as a negative threat level?
- 23:32Speaker 3: You know, here's my favorite part of the Dolphins. This
- 23:34Speaker 3: is their wide receiving core depth chart. Malik Washington, Caleb Douglas,
- 23:39Speaker 3: Jalen Tolbert, and Chris Bell.
- 23:41Speaker 5: You're making some of those names up.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Jalen Tolbert was barely a wide receiver three,
- 23:45Speaker 3: and now he might be a wide receiver one. This
- 23:48Speaker 3: is one of the most obvious tanks I've seen in
- 23:50Speaker 3: a long, long time. Right.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And I don't understand the tank job by them because
- 23:54Speaker 4: last year, there's Malik Willis.
- 23:55Speaker 5: I'm going to get to him.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Last year, they started trading Jalen Phillips and they did
- 23:58Speaker 4: that fire sale. But then the offseason, they spend a
- 24:01Speaker 4: medium amount of money on Malik Willis, who was really
- 24:05Speaker 4: good with the Packers. But you put him in position
- 24:07Speaker 4: to do what?
- 24:07Speaker 5: Succeed this year?
- 24:08Speaker 3: Well, I think you'd give him a year-long tryout. For
- 24:10Speaker 3: some reason, maybe he will be the guy. Or at
- 24:13Speaker 3: the very least, he'd be a bridge quarterback where you
- 24:15Speaker 3: have him as a starter. You draft a guy in
- 24:17Speaker 3: the top five and have him sit behind Malik Willis.
- 24:19Speaker 4: I thought Malik Willis should have gone somewhere like the Vikings.
- 24:21Speaker 4: So you're saying the Dolphins, they don't want to improve
- 24:24Speaker 4: this year.
- 24:25Speaker 3: No, no, no. Actually, I like Jeff Halfley, their new coach.
- 24:28Speaker 3: He seems like a real motivator.
- 24:30Speaker 5: This is a gap year.
- 24:31Speaker 3: This is a building year, and the worst thing they
- 24:33Speaker 3: could do is go 8-9 and miss out on, say,
- 24:36Speaker 3: Dante Moore or Arch Manning.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Okay, the New York Jets, decent defense. Geno Smith is
- 24:40Speaker 4: their quarterback. It also feels gap year-ish.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Any threat level?
- 24:44Speaker 3: I would say it's more than the Dolphins, for sure,
- 24:47Speaker 3: but minimal. It's funny because there are some players there.
- 24:50Speaker 3: We both love wide receiver Garrett Wilson. David Bailey looks
- 24:53Speaker 3: very promising. You know, if Geno is in a clean pocket,
- 24:55Speaker 3: he will shred you. But the odds of him being
- 24:57Speaker 3: in a clean pocket consistently in here in New York
- 25:00Speaker 3: are low to me.
- 25:00Speaker 4: More likely that they win six games or Garrett Wilson
- 25:04Speaker 4: demands a trade before Thanksgiving.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Garrett Wilson knows. They must have talked
- 25:08Speaker 3: to Garrett Wilson and said, like, Geno's here for now.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Your quarterback of the future is playing college football.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Okay, let's go to the New England Patriots. There's the Jets' schedule.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Titans, Green Bay, Detroit, and then it gets a little heavy.
- 25:19Speaker 4: They do with the Browns in there.
- 25:21Speaker 3: That says tank to me.
- 25:23Speaker 4: Yeah, that says let's pack it up, Johnny. All right,
- 25:25Speaker 4: let's go to the New England Patriots. They make the
- 25:27Speaker 4: Super Bowl. Not a great showing in the Super Bowl.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Not the worst of all time. But they get a
- 25:31Speaker 4: bit of a hall pass because no one expected them
- 25:33Speaker 4: to be there. Drake May was an MVP candidate right
- 25:36Speaker 4: to the end of the season. Do you look at
- 25:37Speaker 4: the Patriots as a dip or hold steady?
- 25:41Speaker 3: I actually look at it. Now, they did add A.J. Brown,
- 25:43Speaker 3: wide receiver, who's going to make Drake May.
- 25:45Speaker 5: They're better at that position.
- 25:46Speaker 3: They are better. They finally re-signed Christian Gonzalez. The schedule
- 25:50Speaker 3: is a lot harder. I view them, and tell me
- 25:53Speaker 3: if you follow this, as a 2000s Titans with Mike Vrabler, 2010.
- 25:58Speaker 3: That's a deep cut. Mike Vrabel was always good with
- 26:00Speaker 3: the Titans. They were always 11 wins, but they were
- 26:04Speaker 3: never threatening to win a season.
- 26:05Speaker 5: And they ran the ball a lot.
- 26:06Speaker 3: They ran the ball a lot. They played conservatively. Now,
- 26:08Speaker 3: last year, they did throw the ball around the yard,
- 26:10Speaker 3: but it's going to be harder against the schedule. So
- 26:11Speaker 3: I think there's a ceiling to where this team can go.
- 26:14Speaker 3: I think they're going to play hard for Vrabel. I
- 26:16Speaker 3: don't think they're going to go back to the schedule.
- 26:18Speaker 4: You know, that Patriots schedule there, Jets and Dolphins later
- 26:21Speaker 4: in the season, that could be one of those. We
- 26:23Speaker 4: have 10 wins, and we need those last two.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Yeah, before that, though, there were some tough ones.
- 26:28Speaker 5: Yeah, we kind of glazed past those.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Yeah, the Lions, Chargers, the Bills. Not to mention, this
- 26:31Speaker 3: is a tough opening day against the Seahawks. That team
- 26:34Speaker 3: who won the Super Bowl wins about 75% of the
- 26:37Speaker 3: time in Week 1. It's a tough assignment for New England.
- 26:40Speaker 4: All right, weirdly, we're going with the Bills last because
- 26:42Speaker 4: the Bills feel like the favorite.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Joe Brady, the new coach.
- 26:45Speaker 4: Everyone remembers Joe Brady, 2019 passing game coordinator with LSU.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Now it's his job. It's his stage. Sean McDermott's out.
- 26:52Speaker 5: Your thoughts on the Bills?
- 26:53Speaker 3: I would have done a clean break. I would not
- 26:56Speaker 3: have brought back the OC. Obviously, they finally let go
- 26:59Speaker 3: of Sean McDermott, probably overdue. I don't get it, Paul.
- 27:02Speaker 3: You know, you weren't getting to the Super Bowl with
- 27:04Speaker 3: this coaching staff. Why are you bringing the OC up?
- 27:06Speaker 3: Why don't you go in a totally different direction?
- 27:09Speaker 4: I think, yeah, it's like a comfort thing. I think
- 27:11Speaker 4: it may be one of those things where Josh Allen
- 27:12Speaker 4: was more comfortable. It feels like Josh Allen, this juncture
- 27:14Speaker 4: of his career, has some level of head coach approval.
- 27:17Speaker 4: So I can't imagine they didn't say, we're going with
- 27:19Speaker 4: Brady or looking elsewhere. And he probably said Brady because
- 27:21Speaker 4: I felt comfortable.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I would have preferred if they had not made
- 27:24Speaker 3: him comfortable. I think Josh Allen has played amazing. He's
- 27:27Speaker 3: arguably the best quarterback in the league. But something falls
- 27:30Speaker 3: apart in the postseason. Paul, last year Mahomes was out.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Josh Allen had to get to the Super Bowl. And
- 27:36Speaker 3: he didn't.
- 27:36Speaker 5: More likely the Bills miss the playoffs, win the Super Bowl.
- 27:40Speaker 6: Ooh.
- 27:41Speaker 3: I'm going to go win the Super Bowl. Now, that
- 27:43Speaker 3: being said, I can't see them missing the playoffs. Josh
- 27:46Speaker 3: Allen will run them into the playoffs. What they do
- 27:48Speaker 3: there is a different story.
- 27:49Speaker 5: Yeah, they have a tough start to the season. But
- 27:50Speaker 5: let's get over. Let's go to it. The NFC East.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Let's go to the NFC East.
- 27:55Speaker 4: I'm going to start at the perceived bottom. The New
- 27:57Speaker 4: York Giants, they feel promising. Jackson darts there. Malik Nabors
- 28:01Speaker 4: is getting healthy. Harbaugh's in town. Cam Scadavu, year two, healthy.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I'm trying to sell it. I'm trying to sell it
- 28:07Speaker 4: to the fans.
- 28:08Speaker 3: There's a lot of hype. I mean, John Harbaugh has
- 28:10Speaker 3: won a Super Bowl.
- 28:10Speaker 4: You know, plus 600 is not that bad, especially compared
- 28:13Speaker 4: to a team like the Dolphins.
- 28:14Speaker 3: No, here's my concern. Malik Nabors is coming off ACL and,
- 28:17Speaker 3: I believe, a meniscus tear. Is he going to be
- 28:20Speaker 3: sort of Odell Beckham Jr.? The second. And Odell Beckham Jr.
- 28:23Speaker 3: is there, but he's too old. We've talked about this
- 28:26Speaker 3: a lot. Jackson Dart, can he stay healthy?
- 28:28Speaker 5: By the way, can we talk about that play right there?
- 28:29Speaker 4: I don't want Jackson Dart running a pitch option with
- 28:32Speaker 4: Cam Scadaboo this season.
- 28:33Speaker 3: But they're going to. Those two guys can't help it, Paul.
- 28:36Speaker 4: They love getting, they like being knocked silly, it feels like.
- 28:38Speaker 5: They love, they're overly physical.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Right. What was it, Jackson Dart's father was a linebacker?
- 28:42Speaker 4: Jackson Dart's father was a DB at Utah back in
- 28:45Speaker 4: the day. He's got defensive mentality in a quarterback's body.
- 28:48Speaker 3: You know what I do like? their linebacking core, Brian Burns,
- 28:51Speaker 3: Arvell Reese, and Abdul Carter.
- 28:53Speaker 5: That's cool.
- 28:54Speaker 3: First of all, Brian Burns is one of my favorite
- 28:56Speaker 3: pass rushers. Spider-Man, he is incredible. If Arvell Reese is
- 29:00Speaker 3: as good as he looked in training camp clips, that
- 29:02Speaker 3: could be a really good unit.
- 29:03Speaker 4: So maybe it's not this year, but remember the peak
- 29:06Speaker 4: Eli Manning days? Justin Tuck, O.C., all those guys. Strahan,
- 29:10Speaker 4: they won with those four.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. Same formula. And Jackson Dart's a good enough quarterback.
- 29:14Speaker 3: The question is, will he be helping?
- 29:16Speaker 4: Will he run and slide? All right, let's get to
- 29:17Speaker 4: your Washington Commanders, Pearl. Jaden Daniels is back. Don't shake
- 29:21Speaker 4: him off yet. Two years ago, they're in the NFC
- 29:24Speaker 4: title game.
- 29:25Speaker 5: Way ahead of schedule.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Way ahead of schedule. It turns out that schedule may
- 29:29Speaker 3: never be happy. Last year, they fell apart. Paul, I
- 29:32Speaker 3: don't like this team. I don't know if it's vibes.
- 29:34Speaker 3: There's just something off about it. Obviously, they lose their
- 29:37Speaker 3: left tackle. Huge issue. Jaden Daniels is talking about injury prone.
- 29:42Speaker 3: I feel like he's going to get killed this year,
- 29:43Speaker 3: and I don't like the fact that their wide receiving
- 29:45Speaker 3: core is getting older. Show me something to get excited
- 29:49Speaker 3: about with Washington.
- 29:50Speaker 5: I'm going to differ you with this one.
- 29:51Speaker 4: I like the promise they showed a couple years ago,
- 29:53Speaker 4: and there had to be something there. Jaden Daniels, a
- 29:55Speaker 4: year and a half ago, if you said you could
- 29:57Speaker 4: start your team with a young quarterback, people would have
- 29:59Speaker 4: picked him His injury shifted the bandwagon to Caleb Williams
- 30:03Speaker 4: and Drake May, as we said before. I think it's
- 30:06Speaker 4: going to be a bounce back of your big time,
- 30:08Speaker 4: and you're looking at me like you have no chance.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:11Speaker 4: The Stephon Diggs signing, that's exactly what a guy like
- 30:13Speaker 4: him needs.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Oh, come on. Stephon Diggs.
- 30:15Speaker 5: Last call.
- 30:16Speaker 3: About older receivers, you know, receivers hit 30 and usually
- 30:19Speaker 3: fall off a cliff. I feel like Diggs already fell
- 30:20Speaker 3: off that cliff. Can't get excited about them.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Let's get to the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has improved on defense.
- 30:25Speaker 4: The offense was top three in the league last year.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Cowboys this year, next year, no chance.
- 30:31Speaker 3: The hype is real about the Cowboys. I mean, the
- 30:33Speaker 3: hype is there. I'm seeing some Super Bowl picks. Nine
- 30:36Speaker 3: and a half is their win total, Paul. That's a
- 30:38Speaker 3: lot for a team.
- 30:39Speaker 5: Is that lower than usual?
- 30:40Speaker 3: They only had seven wins last year, so I think
- 30:43Speaker 3: that makes sense. But I think people are overestimating the
- 30:46Speaker 3: defense a little bit. A rookie safety is going to
- 30:49Speaker 3: transform the whole unit? Has that ever happened?
- 30:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say Derwin James at his peak or
- 30:54Speaker 4: Ed Reed at his peak, but I'm giving you the
- 30:55Speaker 4: best of the best.
- 30:57Speaker 3: And also, those guys probably take a little bit of time.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I know how you hold Ed Reed on a pedestal.
- 31:02Speaker 3: I hold Brian Dawkins in Philly. It's the best safety
- 31:04Speaker 3: of all time. We can get that later.
- 31:05Speaker 5: The Cowboys could easily start out 2-0 there.
- 31:08Speaker 3: No, I mean, listen. Their offense is going to be great.
- 31:11Speaker 3: It was last year. Dak Prescott's a quality quarterback. But
- 31:14Speaker 3: even if they have that year, remember they kept going
- 31:16Speaker 3: 12-5 with Mike McCarthy? Do they scare you in the playoffs?
- 31:20Speaker 5: Oh, in the playoffs?
- 31:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I think they do because I think their defense
- 31:23Speaker 4: has improved. The Micah Parsons trade right now is working
- 31:26Speaker 4: out for them.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Not so fastball. Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs? Come on.
- 31:30Speaker 4: At some point, it has to happen like an eclipse.
- 31:32Speaker 4: It has to happen once a generation. All right, let's
- 31:34Speaker 4: get to your squad, your Philadelphia Eagles. They're always in
- 31:37Speaker 4: the mix. They're very consistent.
- 31:39Speaker 3: A.J.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Brown is gone by design. They're the most, to me,
- 31:43Speaker 4: the most confusing team in the NFC East.
- 31:45Speaker 3: How so?
- 31:46Speaker 4: That It could be a Super Bowl win or Nick
- 31:49Speaker 4: Sirianni could be on the hot seat in November.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'll tell you why they're confusing to me.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Sean Mannion is their offensive coordinator. Our buddy. Yeah, first
- 31:58Speaker 3: of all, he's a good friend of not-so-fast.
- 31:59Speaker 5: Close friend of not-so-fast.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Yeah, one of the nicest guys in the NFL industry.
- 32:02Speaker 5: Too nice for Philly?
- 32:04Speaker 3: Maybe, but also he's inexperienced. So the Eagles have had
- 32:07Speaker 3: trouble with inexperienced play callers during this Nick Sirianni run.
- 32:10Speaker 3: I'm a little bit worried about that. And you need
- 32:12Speaker 3: Taequann Barkley to carry Jalen Hurts. Listen, Jalen Hurts is
- 32:15Speaker 3: a polarizing figure. He is what he is. He's played
- 32:18Speaker 3: enough that we know his game. He's going to show
- 32:20Speaker 3: up in certain big games. He's going to be inconsistent
- 32:22Speaker 3: during the season. What's the guy who is going to
- 32:25Speaker 3: be consistent? Saquon Barkley. If they can run Saquon as
- 32:28Speaker 3: much as they did two years ago, then I'm very
- 32:31Speaker 3: confident in this offense. If not, I don't know. I
- 32:34Speaker 3: don't want to put too much on Jalen Hurts' shoulders.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Would the fans turn on Jalen Hurts?
- 32:38Speaker 3: They would turn on him if they were for him
- 32:40Speaker 3: in the first place. Quarterbacks in Philadelphia are strange players.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Strange tale. They didn't like Donovan McNabb despite all his success.
- 32:47Speaker 5: They love Randall Cunningham.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Nah, not so much. Not so much. I remember there
- 32:52Speaker 3: were people calling the sports station saying, put in Bubby
- 32:54Speaker 3: Brister over him. So they don't love Jalen Hurts. And
- 32:57Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts is definitely a bit of a quiet guy.
- 33:00Speaker 3: He doesn't really get the crowd fired up or do anything.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Philadelphia likes emotion. I mentioned Brian Dawkins, who wore his
- 33:07Speaker 3: heart on his sleeve. They love that. Jalen Hurts is
- 33:09Speaker 3: too cool. But as far as Super Bowl... They've been
- 33:13Speaker 3: every other year under Sirianni.
- 33:14Speaker 5: Is there a Super Bowl team in the division?
- 33:17Speaker 3: If any, it'd be the Eagles, because they have some...
- 33:20Speaker 3: By default. Well, by default. But also, they have Jalen Carter,
- 33:22Speaker 3: Cooper DeGene, Quinion Mitchell on defense. They can be a
- 33:25Speaker 3: lead on both sides of the ball. But to me,
- 33:28Speaker 3: you know what? I'm sorry. The inexperienced play caller is
- 33:30Speaker 3: what I come back to.
- 33:31Speaker 8: All right.
- 33:31Speaker 4: That's the AFC and NFC East. A lot more tomorrow
- 33:34Speaker 4: in the NFL with the kickoff on NBC.
- 33:36Speaker 3: All right.
- 33:36Speaker 4: Coming up next, it's time for the Clip Joint. We'll
- 33:39Speaker 4: chop it up. We're going to talk time zones, which
- 33:41Speaker 4: we don't understand. and others don't understand.
- 33:43Speaker 5: Stick around. Not so fast.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Were you aware that the clock in the stadium and
- 33:53Speaker 3: the clock with the officials or the replay center don't
- 33:56Speaker 3: sync up?
- 33:58Speaker 2: No, I had never heard that before. Again, it synced
- 34:01Speaker 2: up except for a couple of hundreds, right? And that
- 34:03Speaker 2: just kind of came into play. I know in this
- 34:06Speaker 2: world we live in, the impression is that, oh, okay,
- 34:10Speaker 2: the man stepped in and the Big Ten wasn't going
- 34:13Speaker 2: to let Michigan lose another Appalachian State-type game in the
- 34:17Speaker 2: big house, and so.
- 34:17Speaker 5: They're going to do what they could.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Listen, they still had to make a play at the end,
- 34:20Speaker 2: and Western still could have defended it a lot better.
- 34:23Speaker 5: But, yeah, I.
- 34:25Speaker 2: I did learn something. That was going on like we
- 34:27Speaker 2: were getting ready for our game and we're going, wait,
- 34:29Speaker 2: what happened? And we couldn't figure it out. And then
- 34:32Speaker 2: it started to get out and get the phones blowing up.
- 34:34Speaker 5: Western Michigan got screwed.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff, NBC Sports
- 34:39Speaker 4: Now every day.
- 34:40Speaker 5: Now, I love that.
- 34:41Speaker 4: That's a great question by Dan. Did you know there
- 34:44Speaker 4: was two different clocks at the end of the game?
- 34:46Speaker 4: Chris Fowler is a measured voice of college football. He's
- 34:49Speaker 4: been working in the sport for 40 years. He's if
- 34:52Speaker 4: not the face, one of the faces of college football,
- 34:54Speaker 4: he didn't know there.
- 34:54Speaker 5: Was two clocks.
- 34:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I had the thought, how many games has Chris
- 34:57Speaker 3: Fowler done? How many big games?
- 34:59Speaker 5: Most of them.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Everybody watching. Yeah. Most of them. Yes. And if he
- 35:02Speaker 3: didn't even know that, it does show what an anomaly
- 35:04Speaker 3: would happen on Saturday night.
- 35:06Speaker 7: Sure.
- 35:06Speaker 3: It's not something that they should have rehearsed. That being said,
- 35:09Speaker 3: Chris Fowler, I don't think he said one way was
- 35:12Speaker 3: right or wrong. He basically said it was kind of
- 35:15Speaker 3: an unfortunate incident because no one really knew.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Well, what's great about having Fowler on the show, and
- 35:19Speaker 4: we have him pretty regularly, we've known him for years,
- 35:21Speaker 4: Dan's known him for decades, is that he is a
- 35:24Speaker 4: very big voice of reason. He'll present both sides. He's
- 35:27Speaker 4: not a hot take guy. He's a guy who'll give
- 35:28Speaker 4: you deeper perspective from a pure expert on the college football,
- 35:32Speaker 4: especially the broadcast of college football.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Yeah. How long have you known Fowler? Did you ever
- 35:37Speaker 3: get to work with him?
- 35:38Speaker 4: I worked with Fowler for two years, him and Kirk Herbstreet,
- 35:41Speaker 4: when I started ESPN. And he's one of the best
- 35:44Speaker 4: of all time. I mean, he started Scholastic Sports America
- 35:46Speaker 4: back in the day. But he calls, like you said,
- 35:48Speaker 4: all the big games and tennis and other things. But
- 35:51Speaker 4: it's great to have his availability on the show for...
- 35:54Speaker 4: He wasn't calling this game, so he's kind of a
- 35:55Speaker 4: neutral party.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I've been around him when he's at
- 35:59Speaker 3: the Dan Patrick show. It seems like he has great
- 36:00Speaker 3: chemistry with Dan going back to the mothership. That being said...
- 36:04Speaker 3: He basically said, I haven't seen this. The fact that,
- 36:07Speaker 3: to me, Chris Fowler has no experience in this situation
- 36:10Speaker 3: speaks to how unusual it was. But now, after we
- 36:13Speaker 3: have all this happening, Paul, there's no excuse next time
- 36:16Speaker 3: it happens.
- 36:16Speaker 4: Well, but it still is conference by conference. There's not
- 36:19Speaker 4: an overriding body. If this were the NFL, there's one
- 36:22Speaker 4: central office. It's not like Jacksonville games have a different clock.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Maybe they wish they did. But every team in the
- 36:27Speaker 4: NFL is under the same jurisdiction.
- 36:29Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I don't care what conference you are. You
- 36:31Speaker 3: call your officials today. You get on the horn on Tuesday.
- 36:34Speaker 3: And you say, we are going with the TV clock.
- 36:36Speaker 3: There's too much money out there being bet. There's too
- 36:39Speaker 3: much money at stake. They have to be as transparent
- 36:41Speaker 3: as possible. And by the way, I like what they're
- 36:44Speaker 3: doing now. With some boost, ACC, you could hear the
- 36:47Speaker 3: chit-chat between the official replay and the actual on-field official.
- 36:50Speaker 3: That should be everywhere now.
- 36:51Speaker 5: Look at you, Perloff from NSF calling out college football.
- 36:54Speaker 5: I like it.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Well, it seems obvious at this point. It's just become
- 36:57Speaker 3: too big of an industry.
- 36:58Speaker 4: Yeah, especially with that Western Michigan loss. All right, let's
- 37:00Speaker 4: get to it. Bill Belichick, who has had a good
- 37:03Speaker 4: start of the season on the field with the TCU in.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Michael Lombardi resigns. There's an investigation going on. Bill at
- 37:10Speaker 4: some point has to talk to the media. And here's
- 37:12Speaker 4: how that went.
- 37:14Speaker 7: Why do you think questions are being asked by investigators
- 37:17Speaker 7: about sex and drug use within the program? Yeah.
- 37:22Speaker 5: Talk to the other guy, Sam.
- 37:25Speaker 7: You know, your GM steps down. amid the investigation, your
- 37:30Speaker 7: son's on medical leave, amid questions from investigators about drugs.
- 37:33Speaker 3: Pat, I understand where you keep asking those questions.
- 37:35Speaker 5: I can't speak about that. It's already been talked about.
- 37:37Speaker 7: Well, I guess just the question then would just be,
- 37:39Speaker 7: what indications do we have based on the last year
- 37:41Speaker 7: and everything that's been reported that you have control of
- 37:44Speaker 7: this program?
- 37:45Speaker 5: I don't think it's, if you're around here every day,
- 37:48Speaker 5: I think it's it.
- 37:50Speaker 4: A couple things there on those responses by Bill. First
- 37:53Speaker 4: of all, I hope you had closed captioning. Secondly, he
- 37:55Speaker 4: was practicing biting his lip so much that he actually
- 37:58Speaker 4: bit his lip, it looks like there. But he found
- 38:01Speaker 4: a way to say nothing and not get criticized for it.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Yeah, because he won. Now, if they had lost, Paul,
- 38:06Speaker 3: would people have reacted differently to this?
- 38:08Speaker 5: But they were off this weekend.
- 38:09Speaker 4: They didn't even have a game to win. I think
- 38:10Speaker 4: they have East Tennessee State next week. But he basically said,
- 38:13Speaker 4: talk to the bosses. Aren't you the boss of the
- 38:16Speaker 4: football program? Didn't you hire Mike Lombardi? Are you going
- 38:19Speaker 4: to defer to, you know, Robert Kraft, in the old days,
- 38:23Speaker 4: you'd do that. Now you're deferring to the athletic director?
- 38:25Speaker 3: Wow, that's pure Bill Belichick. And by the way, how
- 38:28Speaker 3: do you think the reporter did sort of holding up there?
- 38:30Speaker 3: It's hard. I think he's terrifying, Bill Belichick. I've been
- 38:32Speaker 3: in press rooms. I know you have too with Belichick.
- 38:35Speaker 3: He is not easy to ask questions.
- 38:36Speaker 4: See, I disagree on that because I think the North
- 38:38Speaker 4: Carolina media knows that in three years, Bill Belichick will
- 38:41Speaker 4: not be present at North Carolina football games in charge
- 38:44Speaker 4: of the place, whether he goes pro or goes home,
- 38:46Speaker 4: because those are the only two options for Bill Belichick's future.
- 38:49Speaker 4: I don't think he's going to be the coach there
- 38:50Speaker 4: in three years. If I'm a North Carolina reporter, I'm
- 38:52Speaker 4: going to step on the gas because I don't have
- 38:55Speaker 4: access to him anyway. I'm never going to have direct
- 38:57Speaker 4: access to this guy. Look up the reporters back in
- 39:00Speaker 4: New England. So why not just go, I'm going to
- 39:02Speaker 4: press this and make Bill answer something and not mumble?
- 39:05Speaker 3: Dan, ever interviewed Belichick on the DP show? I'm sure elsewhere.
- 39:08Speaker 4: I don't know that he's ever had a sit-down of
- 39:11Speaker 4: any way with him. Dan's talked to him off the
- 39:14Speaker 4: air before, and I don't know if he had a sit-down.
- 39:15Speaker 3: It's interesting. All right, I'm going back to the NFL.
- 39:19Speaker 3: The Ravens are favored to come out of AFC this year.
- 39:21Speaker 3: And Derek Henry talked about how he feels about not
- 39:24Speaker 3: getting to a Super Bowl yet.
- 39:26Speaker 6: I want to win a Super Bowl. So that's a
- 39:28Speaker 6: big motivation. I just want to be able to feel
- 39:30Speaker 6: that feeling. I'm tired of watching. Every year I'm tired
- 39:33Speaker 6: of being at home on the couch watching. I want
- 39:35Speaker 6: to be a part of it. So that's what motivates
- 39:38Speaker 6: me right now. And I'm going to keep going until
- 39:40Speaker 6: we get to that point.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Wow. I mean, if he doesn't want to be on
- 39:43Speaker 3: the couch, Paul, you know my suggestion. Go to a
- 39:44Speaker 3: party instead.
- 39:46Speaker 4: So Derek Henry, instead of sitting at home, should just
- 39:48Speaker 4: fly in if he doesn't make the Super Bowl.
- 39:50Speaker 5: And just, I mean, people invite him to parties.
- 39:51Speaker 3: You'd invite him. Oh, my God. I mean, he's a
- 39:53Speaker 3: big guy. I think he would eat a lot, so
- 39:55Speaker 3: that's a bit of an issue.
- 39:56Speaker 4: But if we roll into a Super Bowl party with
- 39:58Speaker 4: Derrick Henry, instead of you and I being on the outside,
- 40:01Speaker 4: we're now on the inside.
- 40:02Speaker 3: You know, I was surprised at the Ravens. The odds
- 40:04Speaker 3: are so good. They're the favorite in the AFC, sort
- 40:06Speaker 3: of tied with the Bills. I'm not sure the Ravens
- 40:09Speaker 3: are headed that way. What do we know about new
- 40:11Speaker 3: coach Jesse Minter? What do we know about Derrick Henry?
- 40:13Speaker 3: Is he going to be able to keep up this
- 40:14Speaker 3: level of effectiveness as he gets into his 30s?
- 40:18Speaker 4: I like one more good year out of him, two
- 40:20Speaker 4: more good years out of him. I still think they
- 40:21Speaker 4: have the talent. The wide receiver position is always in flux,
- 40:24Speaker 4: but Zay Flowers seems like he's a guy, maybe not
- 40:27Speaker 4: the guy, but I feel pretty good about the Ravens
- 40:29Speaker 4: this year.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Well, it's two guys who have not won in the postseason.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Two probable surefire Hall of Famers, quarterback Lamar Jackson and
- 40:34Speaker 3: Derrick Henry. Again, as you said, I'm sick of watching
- 40:38Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. I don't know if there's time for
- 40:40Speaker 3: him to get there, Paul.
- 40:41Speaker 4: All right, let's get to Kyle Shanahan, the head coach
- 40:43Speaker 4: of the 49ers. Now, Kyle Shanahan... He's on his way
- 40:46Speaker 4: or left a week ago to go to Australia. And
- 40:50Speaker 4: he was trying to get his time zones correct as
- 40:52Speaker 4: the head coach or the boss set the tone.
- 40:54Speaker 5: Here's how that went.
- 40:54Speaker 8: When I look at my clock and it says the time,
- 40:56Speaker 8: and then I try to see my family's time, and
- 40:58Speaker 8: it says the time, but it says yesterday.
- 40:59Speaker 5: I don't even get how that's possible.
- 41:02Speaker 8: So I feel like I'm in the future. And then
- 41:04Speaker 8: also when we play on our Friday, which I think
- 41:05Speaker 8: is a Thursday in the U.S., we're such creatures of habit.
- 41:08Speaker 8: So I call today Tuesday.
- 41:09Speaker 3: No, wait.
- 41:10Speaker 8: Sorry, I call today Wednesday, which is the first day
- 41:12Speaker 8: we put in a game plan. But I think it's Monday. However, though,
- 41:15Speaker 8: it's Sunday in the present.
- 41:17Speaker 5: So, like, I'm going to.
- 41:18Speaker 8: Mess that up all week if you guys ask me.
- 41:20Speaker 8: But today is just our first day of the game plan,
- 41:22Speaker 8: which is a Wednesday. We'll put in some on a Thursday.
- 41:25Speaker 8: Friday is the final part of the game plan. Saturday
- 41:28Speaker 8: we walk through when we play on Sunday, which is
- 41:30Speaker 8: a Friday in Australia and a Thursday in the U.S.
- 41:33Speaker 8: So don't ever make me do that again.
- 41:36Speaker 4: That clears that up. You know, I love that about
- 41:38Speaker 4: Kyle Shanahan. He's a pure football guy. Football guys don't
- 41:41Speaker 4: need to know time zones. Tell me when Sunday is.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Tell me when kickoff is.
- 41:44Speaker 5: I love that.
- 41:45Speaker 3: You know, it's been a pretty bad offseason for San Francisco. Obviously,
- 41:47Speaker 3: Kyle Shanahan got in a car accident. The owner had his...
- 41:51Speaker 3: extracurricular activities.
- 41:52Speaker 5: Nicely said.
- 41:53Speaker 3: I feel like Kyle Shanahan's making a comeback. That was hysterical.
- 41:56Speaker 3: I don't even understand what he was saying.
- 41:57Speaker 5: And I don't think that was on purpose.
- 41:58Speaker 4: I think he was actually trying to get it and
- 42:00Speaker 4: he got into it and he couldn't find his way
- 42:02Speaker 4: out of the time zone thing.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Yeah. And listen, I get it. I've been actually Googling
- 42:06Speaker 3: about five times. Like what time is it actually for
- 42:08Speaker 3: the bodies of the Niners and the Rams players? Definitely
- 42:11Speaker 3: around 3 a.m.
- 42:12Speaker 4: I get confused when I go back to Chicago. I
- 42:14Speaker 4: think it's one time zone away. All right, let's get
- 42:15Speaker 4: to this before we break. This is called the rando,
- 42:17Speaker 4: something we saw this weekend that you should see. Now, Perloff,
- 42:20Speaker 4: Of course, I was cruising Facebook Marketplace, and I saw
- 42:23Speaker 4: this piece of gold come up for only $ 2, 500. This
- 42:27Speaker 4: Bears tailgate van.
- 42:29Speaker 5: Whoa.
- 42:31Speaker 3: How much did you say it was?
- 42:32Speaker 5: Two-wheel drive.
- 42:32Speaker 4: It's $ 2, 500 listed. I think I can talk him down.
- 42:35Speaker 3: You can make a van that's two-wheel drive? I don't know.
- 42:38Speaker 4: It looks in solid condition for an 89 Astro van.
- 42:43Speaker 5: Look at this gorgeous piece of material. Look at that.
- 42:44Speaker 5: Four seats. A grass field in case a game breaks out.
- 42:49Speaker 3: But here's the thing.
- 42:50Speaker 5: AM and FM?
- 42:51Speaker 3: You can only take it to Bears games. What if
- 42:52Speaker 3: we want to go to a different game?
- 42:54Speaker 5: How do I convince my wife that I could buy this? Like,
- 42:58Speaker 5: what move? Is there a move? Do I have any
- 43:00Speaker 5: moves on this?
- 43:00Speaker 3: There is zero move for a team-themed van. I mean, listen,
- 43:04Speaker 3: vans are already a hard sell, but then you put
- 43:07Speaker 3: a sports thing on it. Although, I mean, not to
- 43:09Speaker 3: get too personal, but you did name a child after
- 43:12Speaker 3: Walter Payton. Exactly.
- 43:13Speaker 4: And everyone should name their children after Walter Payton, if
- 43:15Speaker 4: I have anything to say about it.
- 43:16Speaker 5: All right, coming up next. Oh, I can't wait. constructive criticism,
- 43:19Speaker 5: the feel good, and much, much more. Stick around. Not
- 43:22Speaker 5: so fast.
- 43:22Speaker 3: All right. Welcome back to not so fast. Now, every
- 43:25Speaker 3: day we do leftovers, Paul, certain sports topics that we
- 43:29Speaker 3: didn't get to. And last night when we did Kyle
- 43:31Speaker 3: Shannon from Australia talking about the time change, I think
- 43:35Speaker 3: to be fair, we need to hear from Sean McVay.
- 43:39Speaker 3: The Rams are leaving today or tonight for Australia. And
- 43:42Speaker 3: McVay was asked if he's concerned about their plan.
- 43:45Speaker 5: He seems concerned.
- 43:46Speaker 3: He seems really concerned. Well, listen, it, Sound waves and
- 43:49Speaker 3: TV waves take a long time to get from Australia,
- 43:51Speaker 3: so that's what happened there.
- 43:52Speaker 5: But you go back to that.
- 43:53Speaker 4: The Rams, we're going to judge this game by the
- 43:56Speaker 4: travel plans of these two teams because the Rams, like
- 43:58Speaker 4: you said, I think they're in the air as we speak,
- 44:00Speaker 4: and I think they're keeping all their watches on L.A.
- 44:04Speaker 4: time and just ignoring the fact that they're in another country.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I think you're going to determine who had
- 44:09Speaker 3: a better plan by who wins. We actually do have
- 44:11Speaker 3: the McVay sound. Let's check it out.
- 44:12Speaker 1: What gives me confidence is I'm not going to really
- 44:14Speaker 1: make it a big deal. It's, hey, this is what
- 44:16Speaker 1: the reality is. We've got a long way to go.
- 44:19Speaker 1: But let's be ready to rock, you know, when that
- 44:20Speaker 1: three hour window that we're allotted comes. And and that's
- 44:23Speaker 1: what it is. And, you know, to spend a bunch
- 44:26Speaker 1: of time and talking about it, you know, and I
- 44:28Speaker 1: get it with you guys, too. Like, I understand your
- 44:30Speaker 1: guys questions. But, you know, for me, you know, I've
- 44:33Speaker 1: kind of told you guys what our approach is and
- 44:35Speaker 1: our expectation is our guys will be ready to go.
- 44:38Speaker 1: And I'm not really I'm not worrying about it because
- 44:40Speaker 1: I know what our plans are. We're going to follow
- 44:41Speaker 1: that plan and then we're going to focus on our
- 44:43Speaker 1: preparation and try to go be at our best and
- 44:45Speaker 1: go swing when we get a chance to play against
- 44:46Speaker 1: a great team.
- 44:47Speaker 3: You know, McVay sounds really confident, but I'm not buying it.
- 44:50Speaker 3: I like what the Niners are doing. I'm seeing them
- 44:52Speaker 3: over there going to Australian rules football games. I know
- 44:55Speaker 3: my body, Paul. When I land somewhere else in a
- 44:58Speaker 3: different time zone. I am not ready to go.
- 45:00Speaker 4: I once went to Dublin for 48 hours, and I
- 45:02Speaker 4: didn't feel really good at the back end, but I
- 45:04Speaker 4: felt fine on the front end of the trip.
- 45:06Speaker 3: That's because you were drunk.
- 45:07Speaker 5: Yeah, the entire time.
- 45:08Speaker 3: No, I like the Niners' approach a lot better. I
- 45:11Speaker 3: understand what McVay is saying, but I'd like to talk
- 45:13Speaker 3: to the sleep scientists.
- 45:14Speaker 5: Oh, we're going to have them tomorrow on Not So Fast.
- 45:16Speaker 4: It's time for a constructive criticism. Your thoughts, Twitter, just
- 45:19Speaker 4: hit us back. Say what you want to say about
- 45:21Speaker 4: the show, about my shirt, about the football weekend.
- 45:24Speaker 5: Here you go, Pearl. I've got a couple for you.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 45:27Speaker 5: Constructive criticism.
- 45:28Speaker 4: Prior to Western Michigan, college football teams were 110,352-0 when
- 45:34Speaker 4: leading at the end of regulation.
- 45:35Speaker 5: That's actually correct. If you win the game, you don't
- 45:38Speaker 5: usually lose the game.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Yeah, there's not much you can say back to that.
- 45:41Speaker 3: That's a lot of college football.
- 45:44Speaker 6: 1869.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Yeah. I remember, yeah, University of Chicago was a four-point
- 45:48Speaker 3: favorite over Harvard.
- 45:49Speaker 5: And they covered. All right, let's get to the next one.
- 45:51Speaker 5: Constructive criticism.
- 45:52Speaker 4: How many more games until the New York Jets' defense
- 45:55Speaker 4: breaks the interceptionless streak?
- 45:56Speaker 5: I'm calling my shot.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Jets not only get an interception, they get a pick
- 45:59Speaker 4: six week one and make fun of the story.
- 46:02Speaker 3: You know, it's so funny. In the preseason, they had
- 46:03Speaker 3: some picks, and everyone made such a big deal of it.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I get that record, but there's a little more going
- 46:09Speaker 3: on with New York than just getting an interception.
- 46:11Speaker 5: And against Cam Ward, he might be good for one.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Yeah, he likes to play fast and loose. I'm actually
- 46:17Speaker 3: down on the Jets a little bit. I'm going to
- 46:19Speaker 3: say week eight.
- 46:19Speaker 4: All right, last constructive criticism. We don't see these in advance. Oh,
- 46:23Speaker 4: this is a tweet from Paul Pabst. Following is a
- 46:26Speaker 4: true story. Yes, I went out of town for the
- 46:27Speaker 4: weekend and I packed up toiletries, headphones, phone charger, sunglasses.
- 46:32Speaker 4: I literally forgot to pack clothes into my weekend bag.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Was that a subconscious effort to buy new clothes, Paul?
- 46:39Speaker 3: Is that what was going on?
- 46:40Speaker 5: Well, that's how it worked out.
- 46:41Speaker 4: I was actually wearing a shirt on Saturday night when
- 46:43Speaker 4: I met my friends that had the tag on it,
- 46:45Speaker 4: like I was going to a dance and I just
- 46:48Speaker 4: bought the suit.
- 46:48Speaker 5: But going without any clothes, it's kind of freeing. It's
- 46:51Speaker 5: a little freeing.
- 46:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that, A, you're probably a little overextended, but, B,
- 46:56Speaker 3: imagine if you got to Super Bowl week and you
- 46:58Speaker 3: had just one outfit.
- 46:59Speaker 4: I can tell you for a fact, I once went
- 47:01Speaker 4: on a road trip with Dan Patrick. I think it
- 47:02Speaker 4: was the Fiesta Bowl, and he did not bring clothes,
- 47:05Speaker 4: but I think it was a choice.
- 47:06Speaker 5: We went to the mall. He bought everything at the
- 47:08Speaker 5: mall and brought it all home.
- 47:11Speaker 3: I love it. But you're good now? You have something
- 47:13Speaker 3: to wear?
- 47:13Speaker 4: I got something to wear. This shirt may have been
- 47:15Speaker 4: bought two days ago.
- 47:15Speaker 5: Who knows?
- 47:16Speaker 4: All right, let's get to something we like to call
- 47:17Speaker 4: the feel good. Put you in a good mood before
- 47:19Speaker 4: you end your day on Not So Fast. Bro, you're
- 47:21Speaker 4: going to like this one. Notre Dame fans will like
- 47:24Speaker 4: this one. Wisconsin fans, not so much.
- 47:27Speaker 3: Oh, come on.
- 47:28Speaker 5: They did the Lambeau Leaf.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:31Speaker 5: That's like checking the box. It's like going to the
- 47:33Speaker 5: Pat's or Gino's in Philadelphia.
- 47:35Speaker 3: See, Notre Dame are traditionally not big celebrators. So is
- 47:38Speaker 3: this out of character? You're a Notre Dame fan, Paul.
- 47:40Speaker 5: Yes, it's a little out of character.
- 47:41Speaker 4: They usually sing after the game. But you're in Lambeau
- 47:43Speaker 4: once in your career. Lambeau Leaf. The bros are there.
- 47:46Speaker 5: Tarps off. Let's go.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Why not? You know what it speaks to me? Wisconsin
- 47:49Speaker 3: was unthreatening. They had no fear of them. And those uniforms,
- 47:52Speaker 3: they were wearing Ohio State red. I didn't like anything
- 47:54Speaker 3: Wisconsin was putting out there.
- 47:55Speaker 4: Yeah, those Wisconsin uniforms are questionable. And the not-so-feel-good, we
- 47:59Speaker 4: forgot to mention this, but let's mention it, SMU Florida
- 48:01Speaker 4: State last night, powerless for the first hour and a half.
- 48:05Speaker 3: That really put a crimp in my plans for the night, Paul,
- 48:08Speaker 3: because I was psyched to watch SMU. So what happened?
- 48:11Speaker 3: Have we figured it out yet?
- 48:12Speaker 5: We don't know.
- 48:13Speaker 4: But getting an electrician on a holiday weekend short notice,
- 48:16Speaker 4: that must have.
- 48:16Speaker 5: Been costly for FSU's athletic department. Check on the budget there.
- 48:19Speaker 3: All right.
- 48:20Speaker 4: That's our show for today. Much more tomorrow. Getting you
- 48:22Speaker 4: ready for the NFL season tomorrow. The Dan Patrick Tomorrow Show.
- 48:26Speaker 3: Where is that game tomorrow, Paul?
- 48:27Speaker 5: That is in, oh, on NBC Sports.
- 48:30Speaker 3: It's in Seattle.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Yeah, it's in Seattle technically.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Pacific time zone. That's not that complicated.
- 48:35Speaker 5: NBC Sports. All right, thanks a lot for listening. Tune
- 48:37Speaker 5: in tomorrow.
- 48:37Speaker 3: We'll be here. Take it easy.
