- 0:45Speaker 1: get your podcasts. It's the greatest thing since a Super
- 0:49Speaker 1: Bowl in New Orleans. We're all sad that the Bengals
- 0:53Speaker 1: didn't make it back to the Super Bowl this year,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and I am a little extra sad because I consider
- 0:58Speaker 1: New Orleans to be the greatest city in the world
- 1:01Speaker 1: to host a big sporting event, and I speak from experience.
- 1:06Speaker 1: For starters, everything is within walking distance the Hotel's Bourbon Street,
- 1:11Speaker 1: the French Quarter, the Superdome, live music, tremendous restaurants, in
- 1:15Speaker 1: great sightseeing. Before our son was born, the Big Easy
- 1:19Speaker 1: was the number one place that my wife and I
- 1:22Speaker 1: love to go for short vacations, and it's ideal for
- 1:25Speaker 1: a big sporting event because nearly all of the fans
- 1:28Speaker 1: congregate in the French Quarter every day and night wearing
- 1:32Speaker 1: their team gear. You'll see everybody you know that made
- 1:35Speaker 1: the trip and will undoubtedly run into friends you haven't
- 1:38Speaker 1: seen in years. Additionally, you'll see the opposing teams fans
- 1:43Speaker 1: every day, and in New Orleans, where the perpetual vibe
- 1:47Speaker 1: is to relax and have a good time, the interaction
- 1:50Speaker 1: stays friendly. My first taste of all of this was
- 1:53Speaker 1: in March of nineteen eighty seven when I covered the
- 1:56Speaker 1: Final Four for the Syracuse Radio Network and sat almost
- 2:00Speaker 1: directly behind Bobby Knight when Keith Smart's last second shot
- 2:04Speaker 1: gave Indiana one point win over Syracuse for the national championship.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And speaking of first tastes, that trip marked my introduction
- 2:13Speaker 1: to the Hurricane, the unofficial cocktail of New Orleans that
- 2:17Speaker 1: is as sweet as kool aid but packs a lethal punch. Fortunately,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I was given valuable advice by a local taxi driver
- 2:25Speaker 1: who said a hurricane is like a woman's bosom. One
- 2:30Speaker 1: is not enough, but three are too many. That advice
- 2:35Speaker 1: has served me well. I returned to New Orleans nine
- 2:38Speaker 1: months later for the Sugar Bowl between Syracuse and Auburn,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and years later did the play by play of another
- 2:44Speaker 1: Sugar Bowl when Cincinnati faced Florida. Attending a Sugar Bowl
- 2:48Speaker 1: gives you the chance to ring in the new year
- 2:50Speaker 1: in a city where last Call doesn't exist. I vividly
- 2:54Speaker 1: remember doing the countdown to midnight in five time zones
- 2:58Speaker 1: on Bourbon Street. In other words, five four three two one,
- 3:05Speaker 1: Happy New Year in New York, New Orleans, Denver, Los Angeles, Anchorage, Honolulu.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I was tucked away in bed by the time they
- 3:16Speaker 1: got to Auckland. This will be the eleventh Super Bowl
- 3:20Speaker 1: in New Orleans, and I've covered one of them. The
- 3:22Speaker 1: nineteen ninety seven matchup between Green Bay and New England.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Packers quarterback Brett Farv was the big story all week
- 3:29Speaker 1: because he was from nearby Kill, Mississippi. Like nearly every
- 3:34Speaker 1: reporter covering that Super Bowl, I dutifully made the trip
- 3:37Speaker 1: to Kill to do the Farv's hometown Angle. While there,
- 3:42Speaker 1: I ran into a fledgling musician named Stevie t who
- 3:46Speaker 1: had written a tribute song to Farv called Brett's on
- 3:49Speaker 1: a Quest. These priceless lyrics are forever seared into my brain.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Daddy was a coach, showed him the way train fight win.
- 3:59Speaker 1: That's the form you lehy, not exactly Lennon and McCartney.
- 4:05Speaker 1: My best New Orleans experience came as a fan, as
- 4:08Speaker 1: my wife and I attended the two thousand and three
- 4:10Speaker 1: Final Four to see our alma mater, Syracuse beat Kansas
- 4:13Speaker 1: for the national championship. It was like a college reunion
- 4:16Speaker 1: set in the Big Easy as most of our closest
- 4:19Speaker 1: friends from schools showed up unannounced for the weekend, and
- 4:22Speaker 1: best of all, our team won. I was hoping to
- 4:27Speaker 1: experience that again in a couple of weeks, but it
- 4:30Speaker 1: wasn't meant to be. I guess we'll all have to
- 4:32Speaker 1: settle for Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California next February.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Now let's get to my guest. The Bengals announced the
- 4:41Speaker 1: hiring of two defensive coaches on Monday. Linebackers coach Mike Hodges,
- 4:45Speaker 1: who spent the last eight years with the Saints, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: defensive line coach and run game coordinator Jerry Montgomery, who
- 4:52Speaker 1: was with the Patriots last year after spending the previous
- 4:55Speaker 1: nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Montgomery is forty
- 4:59Speaker 1: five years old, and we'll look to elevate a position
- 5:02Speaker 1: group that must perform better for the Bengals to make
- 5:05Speaker 1: significant improvement on defense. I spoke to them via zoom
- 5:09Speaker 1: on Monday, Jelly, I was amused by your Twitter profile
- 5:14Speaker 1: because it says husband, father, and love. Teaching fundamentals. Is
- 5:20Speaker 1: that your strength as a defensive line coach, you know what.
- 5:24Speaker 2: That's how I was brought up, because it doesn't matter
- 5:28Speaker 2: what you'd call. At the end of the day, you
- 5:30Speaker 2: can go back to any mistake that happens, unless it's
- 5:34Speaker 2: a total bust and you don't know what you're supposed
- 5:35Speaker 2: to be doing all right on any given play, all right.
- 5:40Speaker 2: It starts with your hands, eyes, and feet, and if
- 5:43Speaker 2: those things aren't right and what you're taught and fundamentally
- 5:48Speaker 2: and you're making mistakes, it's usually because it starts with
- 5:50Speaker 2: one of those two three one of those two or
- 5:53Speaker 2: three things. So that's how I was raised, and I
- 5:57Speaker 2: was brought up with coach parents and Ron Ake and
- 6:00Speaker 2: and spend some time with p Jink. It's also guys
- 6:03Speaker 2: that are just fundamentally sound and base and it starts
- 6:06Speaker 2: from there, and then from there, you know, we're going
- 6:10Speaker 2: to challenge these guys to push them outside of their
- 6:13Speaker 2: comfort zone as far as learning football.
- 6:16Speaker 1: You know, I'm glad you mentioned some of your coaching
- 6:19Speaker 1: influences because you played at a high level at Iowa.
- 6:22Speaker 1: You got to look from the Saints in the NFL.
- 6:24Speaker 1: What did your best coaches do for you in helping
- 6:28Speaker 1: you become the player you became?
- 6:31Speaker 3: Be great teachers. I can say this.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I was lucky and I was fortunate to have good teachers,
- 6:39Speaker 2: especially at the University of Iowa. And that's their program
- 6:43Speaker 2: to this day is one of the most successful programs
- 6:47Speaker 2: in college football with less talent than anybody else in
- 6:51Speaker 2: the country. You put those kids at Alabama in front
- 6:54Speaker 2: of coach parents, you know, you're talking about him like
- 6:58Speaker 2: they're talking about Nick. But again, you take Nick, Bill
- 7:02Speaker 2: and Kirk, they were all on one staff together, so
- 7:06Speaker 2: you know they all come from the same tree, but
- 7:10Speaker 2: just a great foundation. And I was a sponge as
- 7:13Speaker 2: a player, So when I got done playing. I knew
- 7:16Speaker 2: right away, you know what I wanted to do. And
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's crazy because I quit chasing the dream of playing.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Just you know, you get cut enough, you're like all right,
- 7:26Speaker 2: time to go to the world world. And I get
- 7:27Speaker 2: a medical sales job. And then ron Ake and my
- 7:30Speaker 2: D line coach, calls me, says, hey, what are you doing.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I just told myself I just took a job on
- 7:34Speaker 2: it make some real money, he says. He goes, there's
- 7:38Speaker 2: a junior college job at North Iowa Area Community College,
- 7:44Speaker 2: which no longer has football. He goes, hey, you can
- 7:47Speaker 2: go be the D line coach there. They're looking for
- 7:49Speaker 2: a young college guy that just graduated. And he goes,
- 7:52Speaker 2: you can get you know, a fifteen hundred dollars stipend,
- 7:55Speaker 2: free room and board. And I said, oh, coach, you know.
- 7:58Speaker 2: He goes, No, that's what you need to do. So
- 8:01Speaker 2: I had to go tell my wife. My coach says, hey,
- 8:03Speaker 2: this is who I am, this is what I need
- 8:05Speaker 2: to do. And that's what I did, and so and
- 8:08Speaker 2: then just never looked back. How long were you in
- 8:11Speaker 2: medical sales? Never started the job, never started the job.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So accepted the offer and then literally the phone call
- 8:22Speaker 2: happened the next you know, the next day, and then
- 8:25Speaker 2: I took the the d line job at Nayak.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Were visiting with Jerry Montgomery. You played tackle. How much
- 8:33Speaker 1: difference is there between coaching tackles and coaching ends? If
- 8:36Speaker 1: there is a.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Difference, fundamentally, there's a little more space for ends when
- 8:40Speaker 2: you're on edges, but you know, the there's a lot
- 8:46Speaker 2: more blocked you can receive in things inside with the
- 8:51Speaker 2: interior tackles compared to the things that you have to
- 8:54Speaker 2: work with the guys on the edges. And again from
- 8:57Speaker 2: a passer standpoint, there's a slight difference. And you know
- 9:01Speaker 2: how fast you have to work or move on the
- 9:03Speaker 2: inside compared to the outside. All right, So other than that,
- 9:08Speaker 2: it's it's all the same. And you know, I look
- 9:11Speaker 2: forward to working with the group that we have there
- 9:14Speaker 2: and you know, possibly some of the new faces that
- 9:17Speaker 2: we'll have next year.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Also, your title in Cincinnati includes run game coordinator. I
- 9:22Speaker 1: think we've all heard that with offensive line coaches. I'm
- 9:25Speaker 1: not sure I've heard it with defensive line coaches. Explain
- 9:28Speaker 1: run game coordinator from a defensive perspective.
- 9:32Speaker 2: At the end of the day, you know Al is
- 9:33Speaker 2: going to call it, but I hope to make his
- 9:38Speaker 2: job a lot easier. If he's got questions about anything
- 9:42Speaker 2: that happens within that run game, I should be able
- 9:44Speaker 2: to have answers. If there's issues on the field, I
- 9:47Speaker 2: should be able to have answers and solutions to those
- 9:50Speaker 2: problems and how we want to fix them in game adjustment.
- 9:53Speaker 2: So my job is just to make his job a
- 9:57Speaker 2: lot easier when it comes to the run game. And
- 10:00Speaker 2: you know, that's got to be something that I'm mastering that.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You know I did that. I had the same title
- 10:05Speaker 2: in Green Bay. But ultimately, you know, Al's gonna call
- 10:09Speaker 2: the defense, but I'll have a heavy influence on you know,
- 10:14Speaker 2: what we're seeing, how we want to attack it, and
- 10:16Speaker 2: then run that by Al. And so that's kind of
- 10:18Speaker 2: how it goes.
- 10:20Speaker 1: What do you know about Al And did you follow
- 10:22Speaker 1: his defense as at Notre Dame over the last few years.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Well, you know, I love college football. I've got a
- 10:27Speaker 2: son that's a red shirt sophomore at the University of Iowa.
- 10:30Speaker 2: So we're watching college football every weekend. Every Saturday. We
- 10:34Speaker 2: watched the whole playoff run, watch their national championship run.
- 10:37Speaker 2: There and you know, he's done a tremendous job wherever
- 10:41Speaker 2: he's been, when he was the head coach at Temple
- 10:45Speaker 2: to his time at Miami, and just everybody I've talked
- 10:50Speaker 2: to has a ton of respect for him as a
- 10:52Speaker 2: coach and as a person. And you know, that's what
- 10:55Speaker 2: I'm most excited about, is just being around another good
- 10:58Speaker 2: coach and teacher, somebody I can learn from and grow from.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Jerry Montgomery, as our guest, you essentially became a free
- 11:05Speaker 1: agent when the Patriots decided to change head coaches. Was
- 11:08Speaker 1: there competition for your services? Did the Bengals have to
- 11:12Speaker 1: beat others out in order to lure you to Cincinnati?
- 11:16Speaker 2: You know, I'll keep you know the names in house,
- 11:19Speaker 2: but yeah, I mean there were other opportunities to go
- 11:21Speaker 2: to multiple different places, but you know one this one
- 11:26Speaker 2: is means, you know, it's important to us in our family.
- 11:31Speaker 2: It's close to the Midwest. My wife is you know,
- 11:33Speaker 2: grew up on a farm in Dyersville, Isowa. So we're
- 11:36Speaker 2: six hours or something like that from home. She can
- 11:40Speaker 2: watch a high school game Friday night of our son
- 11:42Speaker 2: who's a freshman who'll be a sophomore next year, and
- 11:47Speaker 2: be able to get in a car and get to
- 11:49Speaker 2: Iowa City to watch our one son that plays and
- 11:52Speaker 2: our other son who's a freshman there as a student
- 11:54Speaker 2: assistant in the football office. So so that was important
- 11:58Speaker 2: to us. And hell, like what was Zach has done
- 12:01Speaker 2: here has been you know, pretty damn special. And so
- 12:05Speaker 2: you know, I'm excited about being around you know, Hall
- 12:07Speaker 2: of Fame quarterback and having the opportunity to to fix
- 12:11Speaker 2: any issues we have on defense and making it as
- 12:14Speaker 2: good as we can. So yeah, so I'm excited about that.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Is Dyersville the site of the Field of Dreams field.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It is it is her farm is I would say
- 12:24Speaker 2: her farm is exactly like two and a half miles
- 12:26Speaker 2: from the Field of Dreams farm, so they she grew
- 12:31Speaker 2: up on a dairy farm. My father in law has
- 12:33Speaker 2: has since sold his cows and he's just you know,
- 12:38Speaker 2: crop farms now and and it has some corns and
- 12:42Speaker 2: bean beans and things like that.
- 12:43Speaker 3: So we're back there all the time.
- 12:46Speaker 1: If you build it with a defensive line, the Super
- 12:49Speaker 1: Bowl can come.
- 12:52Speaker 3: There you go, there, you go. Aut.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Jerry Montgomery is our guest. You're part of Matt Lafloor's
- 12:58Speaker 1: staff for several years. In Green Bay and Mike Holmgrin
- 13:01Speaker 1: before that. Matt obviously hasn't tied to Zach Taylor from
- 13:05Speaker 1: their time together with the Rams. Did that have anything
- 13:08Speaker 1: to do with this connection and winding up in Cincinnati.
- 13:11Speaker 2: You know what, it didn't. I didn't know anybody, you
- 13:16Speaker 2: know what, I take that back. I didn't know anybody
- 13:18Speaker 2: on the staff other than Jordan Kovac. So Jordan we
- 13:21Speaker 2: coached at the University of Michigan when I was a
- 13:23Speaker 2: D line coach there. He was our start and safety,
- 13:26Speaker 2: so and I know he's a bright young star in
- 13:29Speaker 2: his profession, smart, smart kid like he was player. But
- 13:34Speaker 2: I didn't have any connections or ties to the staff.
- 13:37Speaker 3: I was.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Down the road with the team and I got a
- 13:42Speaker 2: text Thursday morning that they put in my slipt and
- 13:46Speaker 2: had an opportunity to visit with Zach, and then it
- 13:48Speaker 2: just kind of happened quickly, and so I was excited
- 13:53Speaker 2: when the opportunity came, But no, there was there was
- 13:56Speaker 2: no connections. Knew of people on the staff Zach and
- 14:01Speaker 2: knew about and so on and so forth, and obviously
- 14:05Speaker 2: playing them first game of the season last year, and
- 14:09Speaker 2: knew some of the guys that were there from the
- 14:12Speaker 2: previous staff that it is.
- 14:13Speaker 3: No longer with it.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I think, I said Mike Hombgrin, I met Mike McCarthys
- 14:18Speaker 1: before you coach a batt lafleur. Let's discuss some of
- 14:21Speaker 1: the personnel that's under contract for the upcoming season, Beginning
- 14:24Speaker 1: with Trey Hendrickson. He led the NFL with seventeen and
- 14:27Speaker 1: a half sacks. He had seventeen and a half the
- 14:29Speaker 1: year before. He's averaged fourteen plus in his four years
- 14:32Speaker 1: with the Bengals. How do you describe Trey and what's
- 14:35Speaker 1: it mean to begin with that building block as you
- 14:39Speaker 1: try to put together an elite defensive line.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, man, to have a guy that's been that productive,
- 14:45Speaker 2: you know, there's not a whole lot that's going to
- 14:47Speaker 2: have to change. You know, we'll teach him the scheme
- 14:50Speaker 2: and what we want to do. But when it gets
- 14:52Speaker 2: down to, you know, affecting the quarterback, it looks like
- 14:55Speaker 2: he's doing a hell of a job as it so,
- 14:57Speaker 2: I mean, those type of numbers are awesome. Now, what
- 15:00Speaker 2: you'd like to have is a couple other guys on
- 15:03Speaker 2: that front, especially on the inside, be able to affect
- 15:05Speaker 2: the quarterback. You know, you're not gonna have somebody inside
- 15:10Speaker 2: other than Aaron Donald having seventeen. But you'd like to
- 15:14Speaker 2: be able to affect the quarterback, and that was one
- 15:16Speaker 2: thing in Green Bay we were able to do with
- 15:19Speaker 2: the front four is be able to affect it from
- 15:22Speaker 2: the inside out. So when you can be able to
- 15:25Speaker 2: push the pocket from the inside, those guys on the edge,
- 15:27Speaker 2: it makes their job a lot easier. So that quarterback
- 15:31Speaker 2: is spinning out to the level of the rushers on
- 15:35Speaker 2: the edge. So you know, look forward to adding to
- 15:38Speaker 2: the group. But man, it's a good start to have him,
- 15:41Speaker 2: that's for sure.
- 15:43Speaker 1: More with Jerry on, Miles Murphy, Sam Hubbard and much more.
- 15:47Speaker 1: But first, here's a quick reminder that the Bengals Booth
- 15:49Speaker 1: podcast is brought to you by pay Corps, proud to
- 15:52Speaker 1: be the Bengals official HR software provider, by Alta Fiber
- 15:56Speaker 1: future proof fiber Internet designed to elevate your home, business
- 15:59Speaker 1: and community to a new level, and by Kettering Health
- 16:02Speaker 1: the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is
- 16:05Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. The Bengals drafted
- 16:10Speaker 1: a couple of defensive tackles last year. Chris Jenkins in
- 16:13Speaker 1: the second round, McKinley Jackson in the third. Did you
- 16:15Speaker 1: study those guys prior to last year's draft and what
- 16:18Speaker 1: do you think of them?
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, good size, productive, you know, guys that
- 16:27Speaker 2: have played hard, been with some good programs, so good
- 16:31Speaker 2: building blocks, you know. And one thing we're going to
- 16:33Speaker 2: do and ask them to do is play extremely hard
- 16:36Speaker 2: and play with technique fundamentals. So I look forward to
- 16:40Speaker 2: working with those two.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Also, how can you help Miles Murphy turn his immense
- 16:45Speaker 1: physical gifts into more production on the field.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I've said it two or three times already, you've brought
- 16:52Speaker 2: it up. It's going to start with our fundamentals. Like
- 16:56Speaker 2: that is everything, because at the end of the day,
- 17:00Speaker 2: if we can get those young men to play with
- 17:02Speaker 2: great technique fundamentals, they're going to have a chance to
- 17:05Speaker 2: be productive. We're gonna teach them how to do things,
- 17:08Speaker 2: how to play blocks, and that way, when they get something,
- 17:12Speaker 2: they can play it the way we want them to
- 17:13Speaker 2: play it. And then if they do it the way
- 17:15Speaker 2: we ask them to do it, they're going to be
- 17:17Speaker 2: in position to make plays. We're not going to have
- 17:18Speaker 2: to go chase plays. We're not going to have to
- 17:22Speaker 2: create things to make plays. They're gonna make the plays
- 17:26Speaker 2: that come to them, and that's that's what we're supposed
- 17:28Speaker 2: to do, is de line.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Sam Hubbard's been a key Bengal now for seven years.
- 17:32Speaker 1: He's got a year left on his deal. He's approaching
- 17:34Speaker 1: his thirtieth birthday. What have you thought of Sam Hubbard
- 17:36Speaker 1: over the years?
- 17:38Speaker 3: Steady, steady, Eddie, Consistent.
- 17:40Speaker 2: I mean, you look at the Bengals defenses over the
- 17:44Speaker 2: you know, the five to six five six years. Those
- 17:48Speaker 2: guys have been staples in the leagues and you know,
- 17:51Speaker 2: one plays on the left, one plays on the right,
- 17:53Speaker 2: and they've done a good job and consistent. They play hard,
- 17:59Speaker 2: So I mean, that's that's all you can ask for
- 18:02Speaker 2: with guys is to play to the best of your
- 18:04Speaker 2: ability week in and week out.
- 18:06Speaker 3: And they've done that. They've showed that, and they're proven players.
- 18:08Speaker 1: See line coach Jerry Montgomery is our guest, as I'm
- 18:11Speaker 1: sure you know, assistant coaches in Cincinnati have a significant
- 18:15Speaker 1: voice when it comes to the draft and when it
- 18:17Speaker 1: comes to free agency. Has that been the case in
- 18:19Speaker 1: your past and are you looking forward to that with
- 18:22Speaker 1: the Bengals.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm excited about it because I think and again,
- 18:28Speaker 2: every place is different, but I think there's times where
- 18:30Speaker 2: you feel like you've invested a lot of time into
- 18:35Speaker 2: evaluating these prospects and getting to know them, finding out
- 18:40Speaker 2: what their football IQ is, how they're you know, how
- 18:43Speaker 2: they're going to handle the things that you give them,
- 18:46Speaker 2: how they process, and then you feel really good about
- 18:49Speaker 2: somebody and then they're there at that spot we talked
- 18:53Speaker 2: about taking them, and then you take somebody else that
- 18:55Speaker 2: you didn't necessarily love. And so I'm looking forward to
- 19:00Speaker 2: being able to sit in there and you know, voice
- 19:03Speaker 2: my opinion on things, and then whatever we decide to do,
- 19:06Speaker 2: we decide to do. But yeah, I mean it's different
- 19:09Speaker 2: everwhere you go. So I hear here you're heavily involved,
- 19:12Speaker 2: which is awesome because I think sometimes as coaches, you know,
- 19:16Speaker 2: that's what we complain about most is not having a
- 19:19Speaker 2: lot of say in the guys that we get or
- 19:22Speaker 2: that we take.
- 19:24Speaker 1: What are the most important traits you look for?
- 19:27Speaker 2: Well, again, you can have the most talented guy in
- 19:32Speaker 2: the world, but you know we talk about in our
- 19:35Speaker 2: d line room, toughness, effort, technique, and fundamentals. Those three
- 19:41Speaker 2: things doesn't take talent. So if we're willing to buy
- 19:44Speaker 2: into those things, we're gonna have a chance. But again,
- 19:49Speaker 2: always I think it's important. You want guys that have talent,
- 19:52Speaker 2: but you want guys that can process and learn and
- 19:56Speaker 2: be able to take the game to the next level.
- 19:59Speaker 2: And my room, I'm gonna be very demanding on them
- 20:02Speaker 2: to uh, you know, get out of their comfort zone
- 20:05Speaker 2: and learning the game and seeing it the way a
- 20:07Speaker 2: coach Seeson. Not not everybody can handle that, but the
- 20:10Speaker 2: guys that I've had in the past that have been
- 20:12Speaker 2: able to do that, the Kenny Clarks, the Dean Lowry's
- 20:15Speaker 2: you know, you know, there's a ton of guys that
- 20:17Speaker 2: I work with that have been able to handle and
- 20:19Speaker 2: process that, and they're extremely effective players on the field
- 20:26Speaker 2: because they can take in the things that we're trying
- 20:28Speaker 2: to teach them to grow so so that that that's
- 20:32Speaker 2: one of the most important things. And too, you know,
- 20:35Speaker 2: you can look like Tarzan and play like Jane. You know,
- 20:38Speaker 2: it's great to have size, and I love it, but
- 20:41Speaker 2: you need to be able to play the game. So
- 20:42Speaker 2: when you turn on that film, uh, it's got to
- 20:46Speaker 2: be more than him just looking good. He's got to
- 20:48Speaker 2: be able to play he's got to be productive. We
- 20:51Speaker 2: took a guy in Green Bay by the name of
- 20:53Speaker 2: Carl Brooks. All he did at b from Bowling green
- 20:57Speaker 2: All he did was he played stand up outside backer.
- 21:00Speaker 2: He played five technique, he played three technique, he played
- 21:03Speaker 2: nose tackle. And he was productive in all of those positions.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And I love him. And you know, we got him
- 21:10Speaker 2: as a rookie and guess what he did at this level.
- 21:13Speaker 2: He was a productive player. He was able to affect
- 21:16Speaker 2: a quarterback. He learned how to play the run the
- 21:18Speaker 2: way we wanted to play the run, and you know,
- 21:22Speaker 2: so that's you know, but again, is he walk in
- 21:25Speaker 2: the building? Is he going to look like Tarzan? Probably not,
- 21:27Speaker 2: But he definitely was a ballplayer when you snap that ball.
- 21:32Speaker 1: You worked with Mike Daniels when he was a pro
- 21:34Speaker 1: bowler in Green Bay. He finished his career with Cincinnati.
- 21:37Speaker 1: He was part of the Super Bowl team in twenty
- 21:38Speaker 1: twenty one. Have you talked to Mike since deciding to
- 21:42Speaker 1: come to the Bengals and if so, what has he
- 21:44Speaker 1: shared about being in Cincinnati.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, he.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Reached out to me once he heard it. As a
- 21:49Speaker 2: matter of fact, it's funny. I got a tech from
- 21:51Speaker 2: him just a little while ago. He's excited for me
- 21:55Speaker 2: to get the chance to get my hands on the
- 21:57Speaker 2: guys in the building and mold them to the way
- 22:00Speaker 2: that that you know, we see fit and how we
- 22:03Speaker 2: want to play defense here. And uh so, yeah, I
- 22:06Speaker 2: mean he's already coach, I want to come. I want
- 22:08Speaker 2: to be at training camp. I want to be I
- 22:10Speaker 2: want to see you work with these guys, you know.
- 22:11Speaker 2: So you know, Mike, Mike stamped up twenty four to seven.
- 22:14Speaker 2: He's the same guy all the time. And that's a
- 22:17Speaker 2: prime example. Mike Daniels was a guy that he played
- 22:22Speaker 2: the game at a high, high, high level and may
- 22:26Speaker 2: not always wound up taking the information that we wanted
- 22:30Speaker 2: to give him. But he was like, Coach, I just
- 22:32Speaker 2: want to beat the guy across from me. And I
- 22:34Speaker 2: was like, you know what, Mike, I'm good with that. So, like,
- 22:36Speaker 2: he was great at technique fundamentals and he was a
- 22:39Speaker 2: productive player because of that. So you know, but when
- 22:42Speaker 2: he walked out there, he didn't look like Tarzan, did
- 22:44Speaker 2: he He wasn't six five sixty six. But hey, I'll
- 22:48Speaker 2: take those guys that if they got some good football IQ.
- 22:51Speaker 2: But Mike Mike definitely, he loved his time there.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Jerry, you got the several NFC championship games in your
- 22:58Speaker 1: years in Green Bay, can get to a Super Bowl?
- 23:01Speaker 1: How much does winning two more games and bringing home
- 23:05Speaker 1: a Lombardi Trophy drive you?
- 23:07Speaker 2: It's it's tough. I mean, you look at what happened
- 23:10Speaker 2: last night and you just feel for those guys you get.
- 23:14Speaker 2: You work so hard to get to that moment and
- 23:16Speaker 2: then it just wasn't quite good enough or you know
- 23:20Speaker 2: you will one snap away.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And so.
- 23:24Speaker 2: That's part of the reason in coming to Cincinnati is
- 23:27Speaker 2: if you feel like you have a legit chance at
- 23:30Speaker 2: you know, taking that step, and so absolutely, I mean
- 23:35Speaker 2: it would mean everything to be able to win a championship. Look,
- 23:39Speaker 2: there's there's only one team that ends a year happy,
- 23:42Speaker 2: So I'd like to be in those shoes for once.
- 23:46Speaker 1: That's what we were hoping for as well. I feel
- 23:48Speaker 1: like this is a question I have to ask anybody
- 23:51Speaker 1: that comes to Cincinnati, what do you think of Burrow?
- 23:54Speaker 3: Hey, he's a Hall of Fame quarterback.
- 23:57Speaker 2: So crazy story his dad almost offered me a job
- 24:03Speaker 2: when he was a decordinator.
- 24:04Speaker 4: At uh at at Ohio, So uh it goes way
- 24:10Speaker 4: back when I was a young coach at Northern Iowa
- 24:13Speaker 4: and uh, I get that phone call and uh, you know,
- 24:17Speaker 4: I was, I was this.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Close to getting the job, and for whatever reason, they
- 24:20Speaker 2: had to go in another direction. But we've always stayed
- 24:23Speaker 2: in close contact. So when I go, when he heard
- 24:26Speaker 2: I got the job, he reached out to me. The
- 24:28Speaker 2: old man did so. Uh yeah, but his son phenomenal
- 24:33Speaker 2: and uh facing him in Green Bay, he's elite. He
- 24:37Speaker 2: gets the ball out, he's athletic, he see, he sees coverages. Uh,
- 24:42Speaker 2: he can put, he can spin the ball just about
- 24:45Speaker 2: anywhere you want it and how you want it. So
- 24:48Speaker 2: it'll be neat to be be with a guy like
- 24:50Speaker 2: Aaron and then get a chance to uh be with him.
- 24:54Speaker 1: You and the Burroughs were meant to be together at
- 24:56Speaker 1: some point.
- 24:58Speaker 3: There.
- 24:58Speaker 1: It is silent question for Jerry Montgomery, and I appreciate
- 25:02Speaker 1: your time. I started with a question about your Twitter profile.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna end with one. It's kind of strange. In
- 25:07Speaker 1: the picture, you're on a beach with your family. You're
- 25:12Speaker 1: wearing a retro Cincinnati Royals jersey. Is there a story
- 25:18Speaker 1: behind the retro Cincinnati Royals Jersey.
- 25:21Speaker 3: You know what, No, there is it just coincidence.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I you know, I enjoy my time out on the beach,
- 25:28Speaker 2: so I've got all my my taktops are all throwback Jersey.
- 25:33Speaker 3: So when we're out there, I always get questions, Oh, here,
- 25:37Speaker 3: you're a fan. Here your fan here? All right. I
- 25:40Speaker 3: probably could have made that sound a little bit better.
- 25:42Speaker 1: But well, had you been wearing Oscar Robertson's number, I
- 25:47Speaker 1: would have really wondered about the connection. But it's a
- 25:50Speaker 1: Chris Webber throwback. I think that's not quite a full
- 25:54Speaker 1: Cincinnati tie there. In any case, said Jerry, We're excited
- 25:57Speaker 1: to have you in Cincinnati. I really appreciate your time
- 26:00Speaker 1: today and I look forward to meeting doing person soon.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Absolutely appreciate it. Enjoyed my time also.
