- 0:00Speaker 1: Was that my fourteenth graduation ceremony for the Master's program
- 0:04Speaker 1: and the College of Education at the University of Washington.
- 0:06Speaker 1: They teach in the Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership Program. I teach
- 0:10Speaker 1: writing and leadership and verbal communication. That may be a
- 0:14Speaker 1: surprise to some of you who listen to the show
- 0:17Speaker 1: or read the News Tribune, but fourteen years of doing it,
- 0:19Speaker 1: it's really cool to see young athletic directors and coaches
- 0:24Speaker 1: and training. They really are embracing the empathy piece, the
- 0:28Speaker 1: need for empathy in sport and with young adults, and
- 0:32Speaker 1: it's really cool. This year's class was mostly straight out
- 0:35Speaker 1: of undergraduate early twenties. We've had some forty I've had
- 0:39Speaker 1: grandmothers in my curriculum before courses i've taught there, but
- 0:44Speaker 1: this year was a younger, right out of college crowd,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and they really have embraced the need for empathy, the
- 0:50Speaker 1: understanding of mental health issues and young adults and youth
- 0:54Speaker 1: in our country. They've just played sports and seen and
- 0:58Speaker 1: dealt with some of those issues. So it was a
- 0:59Speaker 1: really really cool experience I forgot yesterday. Hats off to
- 1:02Speaker 1: the il cohort for twenty twenty six and ten days
- 1:06Speaker 1: from now, I'll be teaching twenty twenty seven cohort at
- 1:08Speaker 1: University of Washington, doctor Ed Scott, athletic director at Memphis University,
- 1:13Speaker 1: and I teach a course Foundations of Leadership, and yeah,
- 1:17Speaker 1: it's really cool, rewarding. So I wanted to get a
- 1:18Speaker 1: public shout out. I know some of them listening on
- 1:21Speaker 1: their jobs and sports here in Seattle. We we gotta
- 1:26Speaker 1: having a show today, our college being a college athletics,
- 1:29Speaker 1: our college athletic directors doing what their school presidents will
- 1:32Speaker 1: not in police college football themselves. There's talk of that
- 1:36Speaker 1: inside and outside the Big Twelve. In response to the
- 1:38Speaker 1: ridiculous court ruling allowing Texas Tech betting quarterback Brendan Soresby
- 1:43Speaker 1: to play this season despite a year long NCAA six suspension,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I mentioned more Ryan Bliss. Please, I think we're probably
- 1:48Speaker 1: the show of record for Ryan Bliss, don't you think?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah? Especially you, Greg. It's it's trumped by you. You
- 1:55Speaker 2: are the you take the mantle.
- 1:56Speaker 3: And then I'm like, yeah, yeah, right there, yeah, Greg, Ryan,
- 2:00Speaker 3: Ryan Briss, please let's get them some get those opportunities.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Brad Adam had him on the post game on the TV.
- 2:06Speaker 1: The Martors after their win last night, and he said
- 2:09Speaker 1: he still doesn't have his bags. He flew from Sacramento
- 2:12Speaker 1: where the come Over Nears and he were playing, and
- 2:14Speaker 1: then he got to Detroit this weekend when he was
- 2:16Speaker 1: on the taxi squad, but his bags didn't make it.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He said he thinks his bags are in Denver somewhere.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So Brad Adam goes, we're about similar size. You can
- 2:23Speaker 1: borrow some of my clothes. Bless's what size shoes you wear?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Or maybe Brad has bliss what size shoes you wearing?
- 2:30Speaker 1: Ryan said tens and brag Gozaga tens too, So they're
- 2:33Speaker 1: gonna swap clothes for the rest of the road. Trip
- 2:35Speaker 1: to continues two more days in Baltimore and three in Washington.
- 2:38Speaker 3: We need a YouTube feature on that entire saga, from
- 2:43Speaker 3: the clothes swap to the shoes, him showing up at
- 2:46Speaker 3: the hotel, brag you got them ten for me?
- 2:51Speaker 2: Oh yeah, man, come on in. Yeah, let's get you tick.
- 2:53Speaker 3: That'd be really that'd be really funny and cool. They
- 2:55Speaker 3: can make a bit out of that. I know they
- 2:56Speaker 3: have more important things to do, but I think just
- 2:58Speaker 3: having a little fun that would be very that'd be fun.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I think I might text Brad.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And we've mentioned we're trying to get Brad Adam on
- 3:05Speaker 1: the show as a regular guest, and we're in the
- 3:07Speaker 1: closing stages of doing that a sponsored segment here on
- 3:10Speaker 1: our show. But in the meantime, Yeah, I need to
- 3:12Speaker 1: text him and say, hey, why don't you I'll give
- 3:14Speaker 1: you Chris Kids idea. Yeah, make it a little bit.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I do have to do it every game, but you know,
- 3:19Speaker 3: maybe once a month, have a little fun.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Knock at the hotel door. Who could this be? What's up?
- 3:25Speaker 3: Ryan?
- 3:25Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 3:26Speaker 3: What do you need? Man? Come on, man, I didn't
- 3:29Speaker 3: my shoes didn't make it. You got those ten for me?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Still right?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Bliss he had. He helped him win last night. We'll
- 3:36Speaker 1: talk about that in a minute. The twist on the
- 3:37Speaker 1: ABS challenge system for the Mariners turn the game and
- 3:40Speaker 1: it's a key moment last night. The Seahawks have a
- 3:43Speaker 1: new veteran offensive tackle. He started seventy five games in
- 3:45Speaker 1: the league the last ten seasons, eight last year with
- 3:47Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Charge. We'll tell you who it is,
- 3:49Speaker 1: why he's here, who's out off the ninety man roster
- 3:53Speaker 1: Seahawks Mini Camp practice today starts around one to thirty,
- 3:56Speaker 1: so I'm actually here in the studio and then I'm
- 3:58Speaker 1: gonna zip on down the rent and.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Seahawks head twitters for that.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Ian Farness is going to be in renting because the
- 4:03Speaker 1: practice going on during his show. Then I'll be broadcasting
- 4:06Speaker 1: from Minnie Camp and Renting tomorrow and Thursday. Eleven o'clock,
- 4:09Speaker 1: I have a keyword for another keyword, as we do
- 4:11Speaker 1: at eight am, eleven, two pm, and five pm every weekday,
- 4:15Speaker 1: your chance to win twenty five hundred dollars in our
- 4:18Speaker 1: twenty two hundred and fifty thousand dollars USA giveaway contest
- 4:22Speaker 1: off another word for you to eleven o'clock and also
- 4:23Speaker 1: eleven we'll go to the Bay Area. Talk to my
- 4:25Speaker 1: friend cam Immanto the San Jose Mercury News. Why are
- 4:28Speaker 1: we talking to him about the forty nine ers offseason?
- 4:30Speaker 1: Why we're talking about them because of Seahawk fans hate them,
- 4:34Speaker 1: and because Brandon Ayuk is saying that they're scared to
- 4:36Speaker 1: cut me.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Do you see that I did not. He's daring.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I mean, he's just going public, almost daring the forty
- 4:44Speaker 1: nine ers to release him. He's wearing Washington Commander's hats
- 4:47Speaker 1: and instagrams.
- 4:49Speaker 2: He's being a troll. He really is. Grow up.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Either you want to play for the Niners or just
- 4:54Speaker 3: just chill and just wait until they cut you, or
- 4:55Speaker 3: whatever the case may be.
- 4:58Speaker 1: We'll talk to caim In about the brandon I situation,
- 5:00Speaker 1: about what the forty nine ers have done this offseason,
- 5:02Speaker 1: including resigning a seemingly ages left tackle All Pro left
- 5:06Speaker 1: tackle Trent Williams, how they're rebuilding their defense. They've lost
- 5:10Speaker 1: Robert Salad to be the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
- 5:14Speaker 1: We'll talk about that with cam Inman at eleven o'clock
- 5:16Speaker 1: eleven thirty, as we do every day at that time.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Your chance to be a part of the show on
- 5:19Speaker 1: the Takomododge text on one four nine four five one. Well,
- 5:22Speaker 1: the Spurs won the one they had to right last
- 5:25Speaker 1: night or else this series this season was over for them.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Interesting to me, Chris that, yeah, wem Mian Yama thirty two,
- 5:31Speaker 1: eight and five, eight and six, and we'll talk a
- 5:34Speaker 1: minute about that. But when the season was on the
- 5:37Speaker 1: line for them, it was dearon Fox and Stefan Castle
- 5:39Speaker 1: taking the big shots and having the ball in their hands.
- 5:42Speaker 1: We played the clip of Castle at the start about
- 5:45Speaker 1: Women and Yama real quick before I asked Chris about
- 5:47Speaker 1: what he thought of the game.
- 5:49Speaker 2: An interest interested.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Observer wrote, last night, I was in quote, I was
- 5:53Speaker 1: in awe of Victor women Yama's performance tonight. He also
- 5:56Speaker 1: became the second youngest player to have a thirty five
- 5:59Speaker 1: and five in a victory over the Knicks on their
- 6:01Speaker 1: home court, behind some kid who played for the Lakers,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and then a laughing to the point of crying emoji
- 6:08Speaker 1: that observer the guy who did it before Women Yama
- 6:11Speaker 1: to the next. Magic Johnson went on Twitter x last
- 6:14Speaker 1: night to hats off to Victor women Yama doing something
- 6:16Speaker 1: only Magic Johnson has done. This is the second time
- 6:19Speaker 1: in NBA Finals the road team has won each of
- 6:22Speaker 1: the first three games. The only other time was nineteen
- 6:24Speaker 1: ninety three. Michael Jordan's Bulls won the first two in Phoenix,
- 6:27Speaker 1: and then the Suns won Game three in Chicago.
- 6:31Speaker 2: We got a series, Chris, So you think it's gonna
- 6:32Speaker 2: be three to one Knicks after tomorrow night? Anyway?
- 6:34Speaker 3: I think so. As I mentioned, it'll be another close
- 6:37Speaker 3: game that I think. I think it'll be another one
- 6:40Speaker 3: but I think the Knicks will end up taking a
- 6:42Speaker 3: three to one lead and it's still it's still a
- 6:45Speaker 3: series that can be won by the Spurs.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I just think the Knicks are the better team.
- 6:49Speaker 3: The Spurs young cort yet again on the road in
- 6:52Speaker 3: a hostile environment, they found a way to do it,
- 6:54Speaker 3: as they did against OKC in the Western Conference finals.
- 6:57Speaker 3: So you're seeing this team that's young. They're not back
- 7:00Speaker 3: and down against the Knicks. They put themselves in a
- 7:03Speaker 3: really difficult position being down oh two, obviously a must win,
- 7:07Speaker 3: and they handle business.
- 7:08Speaker 2: They got it done, and other guys stepped up.
- 7:09Speaker 3: And I was talking to you about, oh, can Victor
- 7:11Speaker 3: be the best player on the court basically at all times.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I'm sure he was like, ah, sigh of relief, right
- 7:16Speaker 3: when you had two other guys that aren't known for
- 7:20Speaker 3: their late game heroics stepped up. So that just shows
- 7:25Speaker 3: this young team learning as they're playing, learning as they're
- 7:28Speaker 3: going through it. And let's say they don't win it
- 7:31Speaker 3: all this moment. What they're going through now is going
- 7:33Speaker 3: to really prepare them for next season when they're probably
- 7:36Speaker 3: going to face OKAC yet again. Because they're not going nowhere,
- 7:38Speaker 3: they'll have a healthy roster and whoever else is up
- 7:41Speaker 3: to the challenge in the West. But this Knicks loss
- 7:46Speaker 3: shows that they lost a little bit control in the series.
- 7:48Speaker 3: But I think overall, tomorrow they'll take a three to
- 7:51Speaker 3: one lead and go back to San Antonio to see
- 7:53Speaker 3: if they can close shop, or they'll say, you know what,
- 7:56Speaker 3: we want to come back home and win in New York,
- 7:58Speaker 3: which I think is dangerous. But nonetheless, I did expect
- 8:02Speaker 3: this first respond. I'm glad they did because I think
- 8:04Speaker 3: now it's it'll be another competitive game for game was
- 8:07Speaker 3: it four?
- 8:07Speaker 2: And so yeah, it should be a fun one. I
- 8:10Speaker 2: like Josh Hart for the Knicks. He's really good.
- 8:14Speaker 1: He haven't watched him closely, and last night I watched
- 8:16Speaker 1: most of that game and I thought, well, hey, this
- 8:18Speaker 1: Josh Hard guy.
- 8:19Speaker 3: He's pretty good, all effort, hustles exactly.
- 8:23Speaker 2: He's not like a normal NBA player, should I say?
- 8:26Speaker 2: He actually and every team has a Josh Hart.
- 8:28Speaker 3: That's true, and there's the reason why he's in the
- 8:31Speaker 3: NBA Finals because he balances out everything they got going on.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Where he play in college. Man, let me pull it up.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I was gonna guess Yukon, but I don't think so
- 8:42Speaker 3: I think he might be right about that.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Well, you know, Google definitely is. Yeah, I really like
- 8:47Speaker 2: Josh Hart.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I just want to be sure. But yeah, he is
- 8:51Speaker 3: definitely someone that he is the glue to that team.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I know it's weird to say a guy Villanova, my apologies, okay, colorwise.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, he's he's valuable. Yeah, he was really
- 9:06Speaker 2: impressed me last night.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Speaking of college sports, the Brandon Soorsby, it might take
- 9:10Speaker 1: a couple segments. The NCAA, let's say just recap this
- 9:14Speaker 1: whole situation. About two weeks ago, no one even knew
- 9:16Speaker 1: Brandon Sorosby's name out here, but the NCAAA was alerted
- 9:21Speaker 1: to Sowsby's gambling in March. That's when law enforcement tipped
- 9:24Speaker 1: off a sportsbook that he'd been betting nine hundred bets
- 9:28Speaker 1: on college sports. The organization notified the organization being NCAA
- 9:33Speaker 1: notified Texas Tech of its investigation in April, and Texas
- 9:36Speaker 1: Tech deemed Soresby ineligible After he admitted to having a
- 9:40Speaker 1: gambling addiction. He went to an inpatient rehab center. He
- 9:43Speaker 1: got out in May. Texas Tech went through the process
- 9:46Speaker 1: of attempting to get him reinstated. This has happened before
- 9:51Speaker 1: to an Iowa defensive captain. Twenty twenty three, he self
- 9:55Speaker 1: reported himself for betting one time ten dollars on the
- 9:58Speaker 1: Iowa women's basketball team the NCAA tournament. And you know
- 10:01Speaker 1: what Iowa did. The Iowa coaches, Kirk Ferentz, those guys,
- 10:04Speaker 1: they turned him in. They self reported the violation. And
- 10:08Speaker 1: you know what happened to that player done played his
- 10:11Speaker 1: last college game, suspended by the NCAA, and Iowa didn't
- 10:16Speaker 1: appeal that. Iowa didn't seek an a temporary adjunction. The
- 10:19Speaker 1: coaches for Iowa said, you screwed up, kid. Here's what happened. Yeah,
- 10:22Speaker 1: ten dollars, but it is against the rules. This is
- 10:24Speaker 1: stupid one time ten dollars bet. This is a lesson
- 10:29Speaker 1: that college is supposed to be about young adults learning
- 10:32Speaker 1: that there are personal accountability and consequences for when you
- 10:35Speaker 1: do something. How stupid that might have been for ten
- 10:38Speaker 1: dollars in one time bet. This happened to an Iowa
- 10:40Speaker 1: state quarterback a year or two ago. We'll mention that
- 10:44Speaker 1: in a minute. So Texas Tech is the one who
- 10:49Speaker 1: sought this injunction. They when they asked for an injunction
- 10:54Speaker 1: in Lubbott County in the court in Lubbock County, Texas.
- 10:57Speaker 1: The judge who would have presided over that case, to
- 11:00Speaker 1: his somewhat credit, recused himself, removed him from the case
- 11:04Speaker 1: because he said, I'm a Texas Tech alum, I can't
- 11:06Speaker 1: really fairly adjudicate this. But that created a vacuum instead
- 11:12Speaker 1: of the vacuum step retired Arrant County Judge Ken Curry.
- 11:17Speaker 2: He hasn't practiced. He hasn't been a judge, Chris in
- 11:19Speaker 2: fourteen years. He's like a substitute teacher that's seventy five years.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Old, coming in to teach a bunch of kindergartens, the
- 11:25Speaker 1: first graders.
- 11:26Speaker 2: He hasn't practiced, he hasn't been a judge for fourteen years.
- 11:29Speaker 2: He's from Houston.
- 11:30Speaker 1: He's from the University of Houston's law school, and he
- 11:34Speaker 1: was handpicked to be the guy birdsiding over this case.
- 11:39Speaker 1: He's the one who accepted defense attorney Jeffrey Kessler portraying
- 11:43Speaker 1: soresby gambling history as a quote mental health an addiction issue,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and argued the NCAA was obligated to consider his well
- 11:50Speaker 1: being in mental health and support him rather than punish him,
- 11:54Speaker 1: so judge retired by for fourteen years. Tarrant County Judge
- 11:58Speaker 1: Ken Curry ruled in Soresby's yesterday, found that the quarterback
- 12:01Speaker 1: would quote suffer irreparable injury if he hasn't granted a
- 12:05Speaker 1: temporary injunction allowed and play for the Red Raiders this season,
- 12:09Speaker 1: we talk about mental health awareness and try to raise
- 12:11Speaker 1: it on this show, and there are legitimate, legitimate reasons
- 12:15Speaker 1: for that in our country, especially among youth and young adults,
- 12:19Speaker 1: particularly among youth, but across all of that facets of society,
- 12:22Speaker 1: and we've all been touched by it.
- 12:25Speaker 2: This ruling and using.
- 12:27Speaker 1: The excuse for Soresby to bet nine hundred times over
- 12:30Speaker 1: ninety thousand dollars, including forty bets on his own Indiana
- 12:33Speaker 1: football team, really does make a mockery of mental health cases.
- 12:38Speaker 1: There are legit mental health cases, and that you put
- 12:41Speaker 1: up the mental health card as something as an alarm.
- 12:46Speaker 1: You don't do it as an end around to get
- 12:49Speaker 1: away from an NCAA year long suspension, which is exactly
- 12:52Speaker 1: what's happening here. You threw up the mental health card
- 12:55Speaker 1: to avoid accountability, which is what we're supposed to teach
- 12:59Speaker 1: callt Yes. I know, they are still college kids. They're
- 13:01Speaker 1: paid like pros. They're paid better than a lot of pros.
- 13:04Speaker 1: But that's what college is supposed to be. Accountability. Do something,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you have to pay the piper for your actions. That's
- 13:11Speaker 1: not what's happening here. What's happening here is you do something.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Let's find it, end run around it. Let's buy a
- 13:15Speaker 1: bunch of lawyers, let's buy a judge, and let's get
- 13:18Speaker 1: a ruling that fits us, us being Texas Tech football Curry,
- 13:26Speaker 1: I said, I mean this has touched off a bunch
- 13:29Speaker 1: of stuff. First of all, the NCAA is formally appealed
- 13:33Speaker 1: in Lubbock County, Texas court. But get this, Chris, that
- 13:35Speaker 1: appeals process won't even get heard till February of next year.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And guess who.
- 13:41Speaker 1: There are four judges on the appeals courts in Lubbock County, Texas.
- 13:45Speaker 1: All four of them are Texas Tech graduates. It's a
- 13:49Speaker 1: home court advantage, man. Let's move that to Texas Cannon
- 13:53Speaker 1: or something.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I'm gonna point to it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: In Lubbo County, Texas, and the appeals is not even
- 13:59Speaker 1: gonna get heard till football season's over. He'll be preparing
- 14:01Speaker 1: for the draft by then, which is a whole nother
- 14:03Speaker 1: angle to this. Do you want your NFL team the
- 14:07Speaker 1: Seahawks don't need a quarterback right now. Do you want
- 14:09Speaker 1: your NFL team touching this guy? He's like radioactive right now.
- 14:14Speaker 1: He's playing this to get an NFL career, obviously, Yet
- 14:19Speaker 1: this is doing the opposite of helping.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Him in his NFL prospects.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I think he'd be better off just sitting out the year,
- 14:24Speaker 1: maybe trying to go to a supplemental draft, or just
- 14:26Speaker 1: hoping that his tape speaks for itself up to this point,
- 14:29Speaker 1: but not play through. This a reminder, the Washington Huskies
- 14:36Speaker 1: once fired Rick Neuheislis football coach for participating painting in
- 14:39Speaker 1: an NCAA tournament bracket pool in a sport he wasn't
- 14:42Speaker 1: even coaching in.
- 14:44Speaker 2: That happened.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I mentioned the Iowa State quarterback hundred Deckers admitted to
- 14:48Speaker 1: placing three hundred and sixty six bets totaling twenty eight
- 14:51Speaker 1: hundred dollars, including one bet on his Iowa State football team.
- 14:54Speaker 1: He lost his entire season NCAA eligibility. In his college career,
- 14:58Speaker 1: Soresby placed eight times as many bets as Deckers did.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Wager thirty two times more.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Money than Deckers did, and he's going to play this fall.
- 15:09Speaker 1: This temporary injunction is irreversible because they can't do the
- 15:11Speaker 1: appeals process till after the season's over. When we come back,
- 15:15Speaker 1: we'll talk a little more about this and how college
- 15:17Speaker 1: sports are starting to rebel already or at least claiming
- 15:20Speaker 1: they're threatening to already. Against Texas Tech, it's becoming something
- 15:24Speaker 1: of a pariah in this whole thing. We'll also talk
- 15:27Speaker 1: about Ryan Bliss's impact in the game last night and
- 15:29Speaker 1: his first one backup from triple A for the Mariners,
- 15:31Speaker 1: an abs twist that got the Mariners through that winning
- 15:34Speaker 1: Baltimore eleven o'clock cam Inman, we'll talk about the forty
- 15:36Speaker 1: nine ers from the Bay Area with US Lots to
- 15:38Speaker 1: Do on ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back to
- 15:50Speaker 1: the show, The Greg Belt Show with Christopher Coid rolls
- 15:51Speaker 1: on here on ninety three point three KJRFM. Cammenman at
- 15:54Speaker 1: eleven o'clock to talk about the forty nine Ers have
- 15:56Speaker 1: done the offseason. He's the San Jose Mercury News Niners
- 15:59Speaker 1: p We talk about the Brendan Sorosby case last segment. Really,
- 16:04Speaker 1: what this is about is Texas Tech and its boosters
- 16:09Speaker 1: Colin Campbell, the Post prominent one, trying to protect their investment.
- 16:13Speaker 1: They signed an NIL deal with Soresby to transfer to
- 16:17Speaker 1: Texas Tech for this coming season at five to six
- 16:20Speaker 1: million dollars. Some of that money is Texas Tech's direct
- 16:24Speaker 1: payments revenue sharing and the rest of it is by
- 16:28Speaker 1: private donors NIL. And they're trying to get a protective
- 16:32Speaker 1: return on their investment, is what they're doing by getting
- 16:35Speaker 1: this injunction. I mentioned the Iowa state defensive captain. His
- 16:38Speaker 1: name's Noah Shannon. Twenty twenty three, he bet ten dollars
- 16:41Speaker 1: on Iowa women's basketball in the NCAA tournament. He knew
- 16:44Speaker 1: was against the NCAA rules. He's self reported to his
- 16:47Speaker 1: Iowa football coaches. It's the only bet he's ever known
- 16:50Speaker 1: to have made. Iowa coaches reported it to the NCAA.
- 16:54Speaker 1: The NCAA ruled Noah Shannon, the Iowa defensive football captain,
- 16:58Speaker 1: ineligible for his entire twenty two twenty three season. Iowa
- 17:01Speaker 1: was coaches and Shannon didn't appeared and his didn't ask
- 17:04Speaker 1: for an appeal, didn't seek a judge who would get
- 17:07Speaker 1: around the NCAA suspension. His college career was over. That
- 17:11Speaker 1: was accountability. That's what you're supposed to learn in college.
- 17:15Speaker 1: That ultimately really is what college is supposed to be about,
- 17:18Speaker 1: preparing young adults for life, responsibility for one's actions even
- 17:22Speaker 1: when they aren't really tasteful when you don't like them.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Soorisby and Texas Tech boosters are seeking an end around
- 17:28Speaker 1: here for Soresby screw up of thousands of bets for almost.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Have an aenordent amount of money. I mean, it's just ridiculous.
- 17:39Speaker 1: A college player can expect to Scott free play without punishment,
- 17:44Speaker 1: and that's exactly what's happening in this Texas Tech case.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Let's find lawyers in a judge who can buy our
- 17:48Speaker 1: way around this. How much is the judge carrying Texas
- 17:52Speaker 1: Tech water here? Well, Judge Curry, the retired guy who
- 17:55Speaker 1: hadn't been a judge for fourteen years, came in and
- 17:58Speaker 1: ruled on this with Texas techs and Soorsby's idea of
- 18:02Speaker 1: a two game suspension. That's what the lawyers for the
- 18:05Speaker 1: quarterbacks said that he should have against Abilene Christian and
- 18:09Speaker 1: Oregon State, Oh boy, make sure that suspension's over before
- 18:13Speaker 1: they have to play against Houston and then the rest
- 18:15Speaker 1: of the Big Twelve.
- 18:16Speaker 2: From Week three and the rest of the season.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Game suspension, of course, typically the purview of a school
- 18:21Speaker 1: and ethnic department. And well, you know the NCAAA, maybe
- 18:24Speaker 1: the NCAA. Look, they have a lot of problems wrong.
- 18:28Speaker 1: And we've talked about this. It's not one building in Indianapolis.
- 18:30Speaker 1: It's not Charlie Baker or before him, Mark Emmert, the
- 18:34Speaker 1: presidents of the NCAA. It is the member schools who
- 18:37Speaker 1: enact the rules and decide what they enforce. But now
- 18:40Speaker 1: the NCAA can't even force what it wants to, which
- 18:43Speaker 1: isn't always when it should. The NCAA president Charlie Bakers,
- 18:46Speaker 1: who spawnsed yesterday to the sworersby ruling more begging of
- 18:50Speaker 1: Congress to step in and make enforceable laws for college athletics.
- 18:54Speaker 2: We've talked about it. That's not happening.
- 18:56Speaker 1: There are people in good old boys states who don't
- 18:58Speaker 1: want college football fans to vote them out of office
- 19:01Speaker 1: because they put guardrails in for their multimillion dollars quarterbacks
- 19:05Speaker 1: and football players. The bipartisan Protect College Sports Act co
- 19:08Speaker 1: sponsored by Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz that would have
- 19:11Speaker 1: given college sports and will give if it gets through.
- 19:13Speaker 1: College sports Guardrails is getting blocked. Well, people in college
- 19:19Speaker 1: football are, absolutely, but I've we've never seen one college
- 19:23Speaker 1: sport unite against one school like they so far are.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Troy Dan remember him the Huskies. I think he was
- 19:32Speaker 1: the athletic director for about eighteen hours that he's now
- 19:36Speaker 1: the Nebraska athletic director. He told Nebraska staff and coaches
- 19:39Speaker 1: they aren't allowed to schedule Texas Tech in any sport.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Big twelve officials Big ten officials are considering a league
- 19:45Speaker 1: wide mandate to mimic Nebraska's. The Kansas State athletic director,
- 19:50Speaker 1: Jeans Taylor's told y'all who sports is? Ross Dellinger, someone
- 19:52Speaker 1: we've had on the show a few times talk about
- 19:54Speaker 1: the mess of college sports. Jeans Taylor told Ross Dellinger
- 19:57Speaker 1: that his and other Big twelve schools are talking about
- 19:59Speaker 1: not playing in Texas Tech inside league games. It's effan
- 20:03Speaker 1: bull crap, Taylor said, But he didn't say crap. He
- 20:07Speaker 1: said that on the record to Dellinger, quote, I know
- 20:10Speaker 1: the kid has a problem well, get well and focus
- 20:12Speaker 1: on your problem. It is absolutely devastating for him to
- 20:15Speaker 1: be able to play when every other sport, on no
- 20:17Speaker 1: matter the level, teems an athlete ineligible or they will
- 20:20Speaker 1: be punished severely for betting on their team. This was
- 20:25Speaker 1: a quote from a Big twelve football coach who asked
- 20:27Speaker 1: to remain anonymous to ESPN's Pete Thamil fame O Famil.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I pronounce it's Tamil, doesn't he, Pete Thamil, Yeah, I'm
- 20:34Speaker 1: going with Famil there. Yeah, I think he does. He
- 20:36Speaker 1: used sarcasm, we hope when he said this. This coach
- 20:39Speaker 1: from the Big twelve quote, if this is the precedent,
- 20:41Speaker 1: then I owe it to my players to bring in
- 20:43Speaker 1: people from Las Vegas to teach us how to gamble.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Then collectively we need to decide which games we will
- 20:48Speaker 1: play hard and which one games we won't. I'm supposed
- 20:52Speaker 1: to do it's best for my players, and in that case,
- 20:54Speaker 1: they would be able to make a lot of money
- 20:56Speaker 1: to bet on our games. That's the precedent. This is
- 20:58Speaker 1: setting to me four nine four five one on the
- 21:01Speaker 1: Takoma Dodge text line, I'm interested, particularly for those of
- 21:04Speaker 1: you who may be giving money to college sports, whether
- 21:06Speaker 1: it's the Washington Huskies or the Washington State.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Cougars, or.
- 21:11Speaker 1: When is the end of that? When are you saying enough?
- 21:15Speaker 1: Do you want Congress to step in? With all the
- 21:17Speaker 1: things in our country that we need to fix, Congress
- 21:20Speaker 1: step in, give anti trust exemptions and say, college sports,
- 21:23Speaker 1: here are your guardrails. Congress is making it a federal
- 21:25Speaker 1: law because the NCAA laws aren't working. And that's the
- 21:31Speaker 1: pennies from heaven that they are praying for in the
- 21:33Speaker 1: NCAA and college presidents. College presidents absolutely feckless here. They're
- 21:39Speaker 1: supposed to be the people who lead young adults into
- 21:42Speaker 1: accountability and to prepare themselves to be adults in society,
- 21:45Speaker 1: and they are doing nothing, absolutely nothing, for fear of
- 21:50Speaker 1: being sued or injunctions like this. So their answer is
- 21:53Speaker 1: to do nothing and pray for Congress.
- 21:54Speaker 2: To step in.
- 21:57Speaker 1: The college presidents are the ones who have caused this,
- 21:59Speaker 1: the college and so the ones who allowed the edobandon case,
- 22:02Speaker 1: the House ruling to just say, well, we're not having
- 22:04Speaker 1: any rules.
- 22:05Speaker 2: We'll let the.
- 22:07Speaker 1: PAC twelve disintegrate, We'll let the big Den and the
- 22:09Speaker 1: SEC make its own rules, and anyone who doesn't want
- 22:12Speaker 1: to follow gets a second tier of Division one and
- 22:15Speaker 1: big time football and basketball. They allowed this to happen.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Aren't their watch without doing anything? It's ridiculous four nine,
- 22:23Speaker 1: four to five one. It's absolute ridiculous that this. But
- 22:26Speaker 1: is this Brendon Soarsby case the one that coalesces people
- 22:30Speaker 1: into action or are they just going to wait and
- 22:32Speaker 1: pray that Congress, who is malfunctioned at all levels, are
- 22:36Speaker 1: going to fix this.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Ryan Bliss last night, he's back.
- 22:43Speaker 1: He's part of the reason the Mariners won in Baltimore
- 22:46Speaker 1: last night. Sacrifice fly in the fifth Enning tied the
- 22:49Speaker 1: game at one. That was right before Josh Naylor's Grand Slam.
- 22:52Speaker 1: We'll talk more about Ryan Bliss's contribution first, because this.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Is the Ryan Bliss Fan Club Show, and then.
- 22:58Speaker 1: We'll also talk about the abs some change that helped
- 23:02Speaker 1: the Mariners win last night. Surprisingly enough, we'll tell you
- 23:05Speaker 1: the Seahawks signed a veteran offensive tackle and why they
- 23:08Speaker 1: did it, and then at eleven o'clock we'll talk with
- 23:10Speaker 1: the forty nine ers have been doing. What's Brandon Ayug doing?
- 23:12Speaker 1: Is he ever gonna leave? He's gonna play for the
- 23:14Speaker 1: forty nine ers. What's happened to Cam Inman, beat writer
- 23:16Speaker 1: for the San Jose Mercury News at eleven o'clock. All
- 23:18Speaker 1: coming up on ninety three point three KJRFM. We welcome
- 23:28Speaker 1: back the Greg Belt Show with Christopher Kid Live on
- 23:30Speaker 1: ninety three point three KJRFM. The Seahawks mini camp first
- 23:34Speaker 1: of three practices today. I'll be running out from the
- 23:36Speaker 1: show and heading down the renting for an afternoon practice today.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Then I'll be doing shows with Ian Ferness back to
- 23:42Speaker 1: back from Seahawks headquarters tomorrow and Thursday, and then they're
- 23:45Speaker 1: off until July twenty fifth to start of training camp.
- 23:48Speaker 1: The Seahawks yesterday signed a veteran offensive tackle, Bobby Hart,
- 23:55Speaker 1: seventy five starting since entering the NFL in twenty fifteen.
- 23:57Speaker 1: He had eight starts for the Chargers last year. He
- 24:00Speaker 1: was a former starter with the Giants and the Bengals,
- 24:03Speaker 1: started one game with the Titans and part of a
- 24:05Speaker 1: season well traveled, experienced, much like Josh Jones, the swing
- 24:11Speaker 1: backup tackle who played really well in limited roles as
- 24:15Speaker 1: an injury replacement last year. Why are they signing another
- 24:20Speaker 1: guy just like Josh Jones? Well, Josh Jones hasn't been
- 24:23Speaker 1: on the field so far in the OTA's at least
- 24:25Speaker 1: last week was not don't know if there's an injury issue.
- 24:28Speaker 1: We haven't talked to Mike McDonald in about a week
- 24:30Speaker 1: and a half or so. We're supposed to talk to
- 24:31Speaker 1: him tomorrow. But in the interim, it appears that Bobby
- 24:35Speaker 1: Hart is going to compete with Josh Jones to be
- 24:38Speaker 1: a backup swing type tackle with starting experience in.
- 24:42Speaker 2: The league, which is what Jones had too. Of course,
- 24:45Speaker 2: Charles Cross and Abe Lucas.
- 24:48Speaker 1: The former Washington State Cougar from Mill Creek and Archpacit
- 24:51Speaker 1: Murray High School, are entrenched as your cornerstone tackles. They
- 24:54Speaker 1: just each resigned new contracts last year for the foreseer
- 24:58Speaker 1: for well future.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Those are arters.
- 25:01Speaker 1: So now they have Bobby Harden to apparently compete with
- 25:04Speaker 1: Josh Jones as a swing backup tackle. That'll be something
- 25:11Speaker 1: goes well in the training camp. You can't determine that
- 25:12Speaker 1: when they're in T shirts and shorts and OTAs and
- 25:15Speaker 1: mini camps. The team waved rookie wide receiver Levi Wentz,
- 25:18Speaker 1: an undrafted free agent from Kansas, to make room on
- 25:21Speaker 1: the ninety man roster. That's why they signed the veteran
- 25:27Speaker 1: offensive tackle yesterday. Also yesterday, the Mariners got back on
- 25:33Speaker 1: the winning ways, remaining in first place by two games
- 25:35Speaker 1: in the American League West. Ryan Bliss came up because
- 25:38Speaker 1: JP Crawford went to the injured list after getting hit
- 25:40Speaker 1: in the hand by the framer bell ed Is fastball
- 25:44Speaker 1: in Detroit on Friday. Bliss sacrifice fly in the fifth
- 25:49Speaker 1: enning gave Seattle its first run yesterday, tying the game
- 25:52Speaker 1: at one. That was before Josh Naylor's grand slam. He's
- 25:56Speaker 1: playing second base. Bliss was because they moved Cole Young
- 25:59Speaker 1: over to short when cold Emerson came up hurt right
- 26:01Speaker 1: before first pitch. Bliss entered ended the seventh inning with
- 26:08Speaker 1: the Oriols having the bases loaded down by only three runs.
- 26:10Speaker 1: He moved far to his left, got a hard grounder
- 26:12Speaker 1: and short right field, and threw to Naylor at first
- 26:14Speaker 1: for the final out that kept the score five to
- 26:16Speaker 1: two and got Matt Brash out of a bases loaded,
- 26:19Speaker 1: one out jam.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Then in the bottom of the eighth.
- 26:22Speaker 1: By the way, Brash could not throw a strike last night,
- 26:24Speaker 1: fastballs sliders didn't matter. You were probably watching the knick
- 26:27Speaker 1: spurs by that point, but.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I had it on my laptop, but not too well.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Huh he was no, he was everywhere.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Then the bottom of the eighth, Bliss put down a
- 26:37Speaker 1: really coy, deep late tag. I don't know if you
- 26:39Speaker 1: noticed how late, and it was like a dummy play.
- 26:43Speaker 1: It was acting like the ball was not coming in.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And that was holy of Rodriguez's moonshot throw from the
- 26:47Speaker 1: edge of the warning track that threw out the runner
- 26:50Speaker 1: at second base on a fly ball first and third situation.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Rodriguez's throw and Bliss's tag were so good that they
- 26:57Speaker 1: got it down and the guy was out before the
- 26:59Speaker 1: runner from third even crossed home plate, so it would
- 27:01Speaker 1: save the run and kept the Mariners up by three
- 27:04Speaker 1: going to the ninth inning.
- 27:05Speaker 2: That was a really cool play by Bliss.
- 27:07Speaker 1: That's a veteran play of deacon a guy and not
- 27:09Speaker 1: making the runner going from first to second think the
- 27:12Speaker 1: ball's coming.
- 27:16Speaker 2: And the brass thing.
- 27:17Speaker 1: The biggest moment in the game was when Brash could
- 27:20Speaker 1: not throw a strike with a slider or his fastball
- 27:22Speaker 1: and getting that bases loaded one out. Jam Pete Alonzo's up,
- 27:25Speaker 1: remember him, everyone wanted him to come to the Mariners
- 27:28Speaker 1: last year. Oh yeah and a half ago. That was
- 27:31Speaker 1: a great time. You loved that conversation. Criz three to
- 27:36Speaker 1: two count bases loaded, one out, five to two game.
- 27:38Speaker 1: In the seventh, Brash threw a sinker at the top
- 27:40Speaker 1: of the strikes and Alonso took it for what the
- 27:42Speaker 1: play umpire called ball four. Would have been a run
- 27:45Speaker 1: to make it five to three. Brash and Parade simultaneously
- 27:48Speaker 1: tapped their caps with the ABS challenge. I know the
- 27:52Speaker 1: Aaron Goldsmith and Ryan Roland Smith gave credit to Johnny Parada,
- 27:55Speaker 1: the catcher, for doing that, but Brash is the one
- 27:58Speaker 1: who was tapping his hat from the mound. And when
- 27:59Speaker 1: you the pitchers happened to hat, you have to as
- 28:02Speaker 1: a catcher back them up and do it too. And
- 28:04Speaker 1: that's what it looked like to me. And almost all
- 28:07Speaker 1: the challenges these days are by the catcher. Yet here's
- 28:09Speaker 1: Ratt Brash doing it from sixty feet six inches. By
- 28:13Speaker 1: the way, Parreda entered last night's game curiously ranked last
- 28:16Speaker 1: among all major league catchers with only a twenty nine
- 28:19Speaker 1: percent success rate challenging pitch calls. The ABS reviews showed
- 28:23Speaker 1: Brash's pitch man it just basically ticked the top of
- 28:26Speaker 1: the strike zone. He got the call strike three instead
- 28:29Speaker 1: of a basis loaded walk, two outs in a five
- 28:32Speaker 1: to two game, and then Bliss's played in the inning
- 28:34Speaker 1: kept a five to two. After the game, Brash thanked
- 28:37Speaker 1: Parada backing them up, challenging the pitch, calling it the
- 28:40Speaker 1: quote turning point of the game right there.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I'm happy he had the stones to do it.
- 28:44Speaker 1: That's what our buddy Daniel Kramer MLB dot com wrote
- 28:46Speaker 1: out of the clubhouse after the win last night. Andreis
- 28:49Speaker 1: Munoz by the way scoreless ninth bounce back save after
- 28:53Speaker 1: blowing one Sunday in Detroit. We spent that time yesterday saying, well,
- 28:56Speaker 1: they're going to do it closer. They're going to trot
- 28:57Speaker 1: him out again in a three run lead. It sure
- 28:59Speaker 1: hope Chris helped Chris that they had a three run
- 29:01Speaker 1: lead to kind of give him a little buffer.
- 29:04Speaker 3: That's what I wouldn't on making any excuse for him,
- 29:06Speaker 3: but yes, sometime just give him a little give him
- 29:09Speaker 3: something to work with.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Munhos told Seattle Times Adam June and Marin's Beat writers
- 29:14Speaker 1: in the Wind and Baltimore yesterday, quote, I appreciate that
- 29:17Speaker 1: a lot, the trust they have in me. I've let
- 29:19Speaker 1: them down a few times and they keep trusting me. Obviously,
- 29:22Speaker 1: it's an awesome feeling for me. So for now it
- 29:26Speaker 1: appears Andres Munhals will remain as the closer and they
- 29:29Speaker 1: won't do a committee for now. I still say, if
- 29:32Speaker 1: there's the bulk of the roster, the best hitters are
- 29:35Speaker 1: up in the eighth, bring Munos in the eighth. That's
- 29:38Speaker 1: what I would not necessarily shoehorn him into a safe
- 29:41Speaker 1: situation in the ninth inning.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Every time. Man, there's a bunch of stuff I want
- 29:46Speaker 2: to bring up. I don't know if I have time
- 29:48Speaker 2: or want to bring it up. Chris is shaking his head. No.
- 29:52Speaker 1: There are a couple of things will table for later
- 29:53Speaker 1: on this week, including in high school sports here locally
- 29:56Speaker 1: both in Seattle and gig Harber and Tacoma. But next
- 30:00Speaker 1: we're gonna go to the NFL. We're going to talk
- 30:02Speaker 1: from the Bay area San Jose. Mercury news beat writer
- 30:05Speaker 1: cam In and longtime friend of mine used to work
- 30:07Speaker 1: together in the Bay Area and tell us what the
- 30:09Speaker 1: heck's up with Brandon Aiyuk daring the Niners to cut them,
- 30:12Speaker 1: and what the Niners have done this offseason. That's next
- 30:14Speaker 1: your tax four nine, four to five to one. What
- 30:17Speaker 1: do you think of the Brandon Soresby college sports mess
- 30:20Speaker 1: that it's just even worse. By the day you're interested
- 30:23Speaker 1: in the World Cup, you're going Tickets are down to
- 30:25Speaker 1: about two hundred a little over two hundred dollars for
- 30:29Speaker 1: one of the four matches, the four group state matches,
- 30:31Speaker 1: the US match still about one thousand dollars to get in.
- 30:34Speaker 1: On June the nineteenth, we'll be broadcasting I will from
- 30:37Speaker 1: Jimmy's on first right across the street from the stadium.
- 30:40Speaker 2: On the fifteenth.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Next Monday, Belgium Egypt the first World Cup game here
- 30:45Speaker 1: in Seattle. Then the nineteenth is the second one US Australia.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Then they play the twenty fourth and the twenty fifth,
- 30:50Speaker 1: twenty fourth and twenty six first round games, Round of
- 30:53Speaker 1: thirty two game on July, first round.
- 30:55Speaker 2: A sixteen game on July sixth.
- 30:57Speaker 1: So if you're looking to get out of the city
- 30:58Speaker 1: away from the traffic, those are the dates to it.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Cam Nemman's next a ninety three point three k j
- 31:02Speaker 2: R F M
