- 2:02Speaker 4: There are some new poll numbers out and they're not
- 2:07Speaker 4: really promising for President Donald Trump. Now, this is nationwide
- 2:11Speaker 4: and it's probably not going to impact his standing in
- 2:14Speaker 4: West Virginia at all. Well, because he's He's Donald Trump
- 2:17Speaker 4: and this is West Virginia. I'll get into that more
- 2:19Speaker 4: with Danny. Plus, I'm gonna do a little bit of bragging.
- 2:22Speaker 4: We're gonna have the right to do that. It was
- 2:24Speaker 4: a good night for the stations of WVRC Media Charleston
- 2:26Speaker 4: this past Saturday night at the Marriott at the West
- 2:28Speaker 4: Virginia Broadcasters Association Awards. Look, if you can't brag on yourself,

- 2:47Speaker 4: Star of newspapers, of Twitter or x or anything. Steven
- 2:54Speaker 4: Allen Adams, how you doing, buddy?
- 2:55Speaker 6: Hey, I've got two West Virginia Broadcasters Associations Awards, and
- 2:59Speaker 6: by just a little really the first awards I had
- 3:02Speaker 6: i'd ever won for Best about News Coverage when I
- 3:04Speaker 6: worked for Results Radio in Parkersburg in the mid two thousands.
- 3:07Speaker 4: So well, guess what, you have two more than I do,
- 3:10Speaker 4: if on a personal level anyway, now most the stations do.
- 3:13Speaker 4: But yeah, you get two more than I do. So
- 3:14Speaker 4: you got that gear.
- 3:15Speaker 7: You're going to get there.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Your your young talent and keep reaching and you'll you'll
- 3:20Speaker 6: you'll accomplish.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Your just keep working, you know, the first thirty seven
- 3:23Speaker 4: years or the hardest is what they say. I want
- 3:27Speaker 4: to pick your brain on a couple of things. There's
- 3:31Speaker 4: I think there's a developing story and we're going to
- 3:33Speaker 4: get into this more with Delegate Daniel Lenville on Metro
- 3:37Speaker 4: News Midday. And I know TJ and Wilson are going
- 3:40Speaker 4: to cover this as well, and has to do with
- 3:41Speaker 4: this the green buses in South Charleston, and I'll get
- 3:45Speaker 4: into that a little bit later on. But I want
- 3:47Speaker 4: to ask you and Danny and I are going to
- 3:49Speaker 4: talk about this. Looking at some numbers, and I'm not
- 3:53Speaker 4: normally that big of a number guy, but this one
- 3:55Speaker 4: actually kind of stuck out to me. There are some
- 3:57Speaker 4: new polling information out for maybe see news and the
- 4:01Speaker 4: Washington Posts and episodes, and we'll get in that a
- 4:03Speaker 4: little bit later on. Donald Trump steven has the lowest
- 4:07Speaker 4: approval rating for the first one hundred days of any
- 4:11Speaker 4: presidency in eighty years. Oh boy, Does any of that
- 4:15Speaker 4: matter to West Virginia.
- 4:18Speaker 6: Not yet, but I think it will. I would love
- 4:21Speaker 6: to see some state level data on that soon, because
- 4:24Speaker 6: I mean, we're still not really feeling the effect of
- 4:28Speaker 6: some of this tariff stuff right now. I think we've
- 4:31Speaker 6: seen some reporting over the weekend and some people, including Groy,
- 4:36Speaker 6: a former economic advisor to President Trump, point out the
- 4:39Speaker 6: fact that in Seattle to Seattle Port there they don't
- 4:44Speaker 6: have any other container ships coming for at least a
- 4:47Speaker 6: hot minute, and that's going to begin to effect at
- 4:50Speaker 6: some point over the next couple weeks. Shelves, I mean,
- 4:54Speaker 6: things that you buy on your shelf are going to
- 4:55Speaker 6: become more scarce. Is going to be as bad as say,
- 4:58Speaker 6: during COVID. I don't know, not an expert on that
- 5:00Speaker 6: sort of stuff, but I think you'll see that trickle
- 5:04Speaker 6: down into the economy in some ways. So I think
- 5:07Speaker 6: when people start to feel the effects, and yeah, they've
- 5:10Speaker 6: been able to back off some of those tariffs or
- 5:12Speaker 6: do some exceptions that sort of thing, but uh, it
- 5:16Speaker 6: takes a little while for the economy to catch up.
- 5:19Speaker 6: And I think you're going to start to see the
- 5:21Speaker 6: effects of some of the decisions that were made a
- 5:23Speaker 6: couple of weeks ago that were great. They were pulled back,
- 5:26Speaker 6: but the effects of that haven't really been felt yet.
- 5:29Speaker 6: I think we're about to feel those And when that happens,
- 5:32Speaker 6: I think West Virginians will really have some thoughts on
- 5:36Speaker 6: that and want to blame somebody. And there's no one
- 5:38Speaker 6: really to blame other than President Trump for that.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Well, and I talked to a lot of my friends
- 5:44Speaker 4: in the coal industry on a regular basis, and of course,
- 5:46Speaker 4: I mean, you know Donald Trump, you know his love
- 5:49Speaker 4: affair with coal and there and in turn the coal
- 5:52Speaker 4: mining industry's love affair with Donald Trump. There are there's
- 5:56Speaker 4: some opt Well let me say, how can I put this.
- 6:01Speaker 4: People are cautious right now in the coal industry about
- 6:04Speaker 4: what some of these tariffs and what other things are
- 6:06Speaker 4: going to mean to And this is an industry again
- 6:08Speaker 4: that bent over backwards, you know, for Donald Trump, and
- 6:14Speaker 4: there will have a lot of apprehension right now in
- 6:16Speaker 4: the coal industry. But if they're not ready to they're
- 6:18Speaker 4: not going to pull support or anything like that.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Uh.
- 6:21Speaker 4: But and there's also a lot of people with the
- 6:22Speaker 4: Niosh situation up in Morgantown that does a lot of
- 6:24Speaker 4: research when it comes to black lung and things like that.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Some people that are certainly concerned there. All right, So
- 6:31Speaker 4: let's get to this green this green bus situation again.
- 6:34Speaker 4: It's going to be covered a lot. This is gonna
- 6:36Speaker 4: be a big story, I think in the news Brad
- 6:38Speaker 4: mcelheney writes about it, and again Wilson Meadows are going
- 6:42Speaker 4: to cover it on talk line Amanda and not going
- 6:44Speaker 4: to cover and I met your news midday give us
- 6:46Speaker 4: the overview of this story. I mean, as Jeff said,
- 6:49Speaker 4: there's some speed limits put on these buses.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Well, yeah, I mean, great story by Brad macklhenney, my
- 6:55Speaker 6: friend and colleague, and I've been hearing these rumors for
- 6:59Speaker 6: a little while my self too, that particularly in the
- 7:02Speaker 6: wake of some of these halts on funding, particularly some
- 7:07Speaker 6: of the green energy funding and grants and loans and
- 7:10Speaker 6: things of that nature, that that was going to begin
- 7:13Speaker 6: and has already affected green power in South Charleston. I
- 7:17Speaker 6: think it's around this time last year. I actually rode
- 7:20Speaker 6: on one of their newer electric buses that was being
- 7:23Speaker 6: driven by US Senator Shelley Moore Capito at that time,
- 7:27Speaker 6: and things were looking up for them. I mean they
- 7:30Speaker 6: you know, things were pumping at their manufacturing facility, which
- 7:33Speaker 6: is a really neat place. But pretty much as soon
- 7:37Speaker 6: as those cuts and those halts in federal funding started happening,
- 7:41Speaker 6: I was told by reliable sources that Green Power probably
- 7:48Speaker 6: might not last halfway through this year because they were
- 7:52Speaker 6: so reliant on some of that federal money. And that
- 7:57Speaker 6: is sort of the problem with a lot of those
- 7:58Speaker 6: solar projects like that. We've seen it with other examples,
- 8:01Speaker 6: like they're any Obama administration in Cylindra as a good
- 8:04Speaker 6: example of that that've relied on federal money. But they
- 8:07Speaker 6: that dried up and then they went under. A lot
- 8:10Speaker 6: of counties has Brad reported on or awaiting these buses.
- 8:14Speaker 6: They don't get paid until they deliver the buses, so
- 8:19Speaker 6: they are reliant on that federal funding to kind of
- 8:23Speaker 6: get them through to build the buses, get them delivered,
- 8:27Speaker 6: then they get the money from the state on that
- 8:29Speaker 6: part of it. And when you've got an interruption in that, well, yeah,
- 8:34Speaker 6: you got some real problems right there, and that's going
- 8:36Speaker 6: to put them in a situation due to their memorandums
- 8:38Speaker 6: of understanding where they might have to give back state
- 8:41Speaker 6: money that was given to them to set up you know,
- 8:44Speaker 6: back around twenty two.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so this is it's gonna be a big story.
- 8:50Speaker 4: To Steven. I think somebody's got a call. I got
- 8:52Speaker 4: a call for you. You're good with that, Yeah, let's
- 8:53Speaker 4: do it, all right, Ryan, go ahead, and you're on
- 8:56Speaker 4: the air with Steven Adams. Go ahead.
- 9:00Speaker 8: Hello, Well I'm Bob.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Okay, you're on the air with Steven Allen Adams and
- 9:04Speaker 4: Dave go ahow Bob.
- 9:05Speaker 8: Yeah, you guys had all been I think you owned
- 9:09Speaker 8: several newspapers, sure, and I think most recently you bought
- 9:15Speaker 8: the Dominion Post in Morningtown.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Correct.
- 9:18Speaker 8: I wonder if there's any chance you guys would be
- 9:22Speaker 8: interested in buying the Charleston Gazette and turning it into
- 9:26Speaker 8: a decent newspaper. And I'll listen, all right, all.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Right, Bob, Well, get your check book handy over there.
- 9:34Speaker 6: Well, funny you should ask that we did try to
- 9:37Speaker 6: buy the Charleston Gazette mail and we were outbid by
- 9:41Speaker 6: a group that included Doug Reynolds and Doug scaff control
- 9:47Speaker 6: HD Media. So we got outbidd in that war, and
- 9:51Speaker 6: instead of trying to throw down more money to buy it,
- 9:54Speaker 6: they decided to hire me instead, uh, to be a
- 9:58Speaker 6: one man newspaper every state government for our papers down there.
- 10:02Speaker 6: I'm sure that if down the road, if the SCAF,
- 10:04Speaker 6: if scaff and Reynolds would want to sell it, I
- 10:06Speaker 6: think my people would probably be interested in it. But
- 10:09Speaker 6: so far, I don't think there's any interest in that
- 10:12Speaker 6: for for the moment.
- 10:13Speaker 4: We're negotiating a newspaper sale deals mount here.
- 10:16Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, my employers are gonna love that.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, So yeah, you're gonna go up and say, oh,
- 10:21Speaker 4: by the way, I bought a paper today. I just
- 10:23Speaker 4: let you know. Here's here's my here's my my expense report.
- 10:27Speaker 4: So you and I were talking before the show. The
- 10:29Speaker 4: governor is going to be out on the road and
- 10:34Speaker 4: he I think you said you had an interview set
- 10:36Speaker 4: up with him where you're going to at some point.
- 10:37Speaker 4: We've had him on all of our shows as well.
- 10:40Speaker 4: What did you what are you hearing about some bills
- 10:43Speaker 4: he made veto.
- 10:44Speaker 6: Well, he had a statement last night on X talking
- 10:48Speaker 6: about there about forty bills left that he has yet
- 10:51Speaker 6: to either sign veto or let go into law on
- 10:54Speaker 6: their own. Now, when the session ends, he's got fifteen
- 10:57Speaker 6: days to work with those bills. So you can either
- 11:00Speaker 6: sign it, veto it, or he can let it become
- 11:03Speaker 6: all without his signature. That's the whole possibility too. So
- 11:05Speaker 6: we're talking about forty bills, and he says for the future,
- 11:08Speaker 6: folks should know that if your bill costs tax payers
- 11:10Speaker 6: money and you haven't provided an offset for your proposed program,
- 11:13Speaker 6: the odds of your initiative getting improved will be slim unquote.
- 11:16Speaker 6: So I'm just trying to extrapolate from that statement that
- 11:21Speaker 6: out of the forty bills that are remaining for him
- 11:23Speaker 6: to sign, I think we're going to probably begin to
- 11:25Speaker 6: see some vetos. Now we know he's done one veto
- 11:28Speaker 6: of a rules bundle for election related stuff that got
- 11:31Speaker 6: fixed during session.
- 11:32Speaker 7: That was not a big deal.
- 11:33Speaker 6: He's done some line on in veto stuff in regards
- 11:36Speaker 6: to the budget, so we've seen that, but we haven't
- 11:39Speaker 6: really just seen just straight up vetos of bills. He's
- 11:41Speaker 6: pretty much signed everything he's gotten so far, so this
- 11:44Speaker 6: will be interesting to see what doesn't make it from
- 11:47Speaker 6: his desk.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Now you tell me you're going to Washington. I think
- 11:50Speaker 4: mister Adams goes to Washington.
- 11:52Speaker 6: Yes, So some of these questions, particularly about tariffs and
- 11:56Speaker 6: their effects, particularly coal industry, I'll get a chance to
- 11:59Speaker 6: kind of talk to our reper citation about that. So
- 12:01Speaker 6: on Thursday, I'll be in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill
- 12:04Speaker 6: and I'll be talking with US Senator Shelley Moore, Capital
- 12:08Speaker 6: Representative more Riley Moore and working out interview times right
- 12:13Speaker 6: now for Senator Jim Justice and for Congress from and
- 12:16Speaker 6: Carol Miller.
- 12:17Speaker 7: So still got to get those lockdown.
- 12:18Speaker 6: But I do this every year and gives me really
- 12:22Speaker 6: good insight just being up there, especially while they're right now.
- 12:25Speaker 6: They're trying to negotiate the budget right now and this
- 12:27Speaker 6: budget reconciliation process, which begins again this week. They've already
- 12:32Speaker 6: got a framework in place, so now we'll start to
- 12:34Speaker 6: figure out what the meat of the thing is. So
- 12:36Speaker 6: I'll be up there to talk to some of our
- 12:37Speaker 6: representatives about.
- 12:38Speaker 4: That before you get there. What are you working on
- 12:41Speaker 4: over the next couple days.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Gonna be looking into more federal funding issues. Some letters
- 12:47Speaker 6: have went out in regards to the Federal Department of
- 12:49Speaker 6: transportation to the state, and I think others in regards
- 12:53Speaker 6: to just making sure everyone gets the DEI out of
- 12:57Speaker 6: their grant to application and cooperate with ICE and things
- 13:02Speaker 6: of that nature. So I'm gonna be talking with some
- 13:04Speaker 6: Dot state DOOT people about that and public broadcasting. West
- 13:08Speaker 6: Virginia Public Broadcasting took a big budget cut in the
- 13:12Speaker 6: state budget, and it looks like they could also lose
- 13:15Speaker 6: some federal funding too, depending on what happens nationally and
- 13:19Speaker 6: what President Trump wants to do. So those things could
- 13:21Speaker 6: really affect West Virginia Peller Broadcasting here in West Virginia.
- 13:24Speaker 6: So I'm gonna talk to him about that this week.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Well, there will be a lot of far right conservatives
- 13:28Speaker 4: that'll be very happy about that.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Well, I'm sure, but I don't think people realize, particularly
- 13:33Speaker 6: in the rural I mean in the rural areas, just
- 13:36Speaker 6: how important West Virginia Public Broadcasting is just to the
- 13:39Speaker 6: diet of information people get.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Steven Allen Adams Ogden newspapers or mind folks where they
- 13:45Speaker 4: can see or read you, I should say.
- 13:48Speaker 6: Sure, Steven m'swv on X and Parkersburg News, Wheeling Intelligencer,
- 13:53Speaker 6: weird in Daily Times Inner Mountain and Elkins, the Journal
- 13:56Speaker 6: in Martinsburg and the Dominion Post, and not yet in
- 13:59Speaker 6: the Charleston that nail.
- 14:01Speaker 7: I haven't been on their outside the Echo Chamber before.
- 14:03Speaker 4: You you beat me to the punch. They're doing some
- 14:07Speaker 4: pretty good things for that echo chamber. I mean it's
- 14:09Speaker 4: a rick Lord does a great job with them. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 6: I went on there several times during session and provided
- 14:14Speaker 6: some legislative analysis. So yeah, it's a good time.
- 14:17Speaker 4: All right, Steven, appreciate you being here, my friend. But

- 18:09Speaker 4: award that a West Virginia broadcaster can get and cannot
- 18:14Speaker 4: think of anybody more deserving. Danny, I really cannot.
- 18:16Speaker 12: No, I can't. I can't either, some of the other's.

- 19:02Speaker 4: All right, thanks for letting me get that out there.
- 19:04Speaker 13: Danny, Sure, it's uh it's not hard to believe. I mean,
- 19:09Speaker 13: you know, when I was working here and I would
- 19:11Speaker 13: see Hoppy or see Talk today, A said, are you
- 19:14Speaker 13: guys aware of the news department you have here? How
- 19:16Speaker 13: good they are?
- 19:17Speaker 2: You know?
- 19:19Speaker 12: I mean, like with Chris and Jeff.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Chris, Jeff Kat Aaron got we got some young some youngsters.
- 19:25Speaker 4: We call them the kids, and they and we don't
- 19:27Speaker 4: mean that in a derogatory manner, but when you're you
- 19:30Speaker 4: get to be my age. And Jeff Jenkins agent, he's
- 19:32Speaker 4: a little older than I am, then you called everybody
- 19:34Speaker 4: the kids. But there's some real up and comers and
- 19:38Speaker 4: they're gonna do some great, great things. And I I
- 19:40Speaker 4: just every morning, Danny and I've been here for five
- 19:43Speaker 4: years in May. Every morning when I pull in the
- 19:45Speaker 4: parking lot and I walk to the building and I
- 19:47Speaker 4: see Chris Lawrence, Jeff Jenkins, Fred Purser, I think, holy crap,
- 19:50Speaker 4: I work here. Yeah, I actually work with these people.
- 19:54Speaker 4: How have you been, Mayor?
- 19:55Speaker 13: I've been fine, and I you know, just uh, we're
- 20:00Speaker 13: tired and playing with my dog.
- 20:01Speaker 4: And how was Duke that his name?
- 20:03Speaker 12: Yeah he's fine.
- 20:04Speaker 13: Yeah, I took him down Taylor Books this morning and
- 20:07Speaker 13: everybody went crazy.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, we'll got dog isn't cavalier?
- 20:12Speaker 12: King Charles Spaniel.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Okay, what is their temperament? Usually? I mean they pretty
- 20:16Speaker 4: pretty good.
- 20:17Speaker 12: Dogs, dogs, laid back dog.
- 20:18Speaker 13: Well, this one's a little more hyper than the other one.
- 20:21Speaker 13: I had another King Charles, but.
- 20:24Speaker 12: This one.
- 20:26Speaker 13: He's fun. You know, he's he's fun. Shes gonn't be
- 20:29Speaker 13: hard to train, but you know that's something you have
- 20:32Speaker 13: to put up.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's part of it. I want to run
- 20:35Speaker 4: some numbers by you, Danny, and then get your opinion
- 20:40Speaker 4: on them. The first numbers are from a recent ABC
- 20:43Speaker 4: News Washington Posts EPSOS poll. The first has to do
- 20:47Speaker 4: with the job performance of President Donald Trump. According to
- 20:50Speaker 4: the poll, and this is a poll done using all ages, races, parties,
- 20:55Speaker 4: you know, across the board. Uh, fifty five percent of
- 20:58Speaker 4: the people polled discip of the president's job performance, while
- 21:03Speaker 4: thirty nine percent approve. Now, if you're keeping score at home,
- 21:08Speaker 4: donald Trump has the lowest numbers of any president within
- 21:11Speaker 4: the first one hundred days in eighty years. Does any
- 21:15Speaker 4: of that matter in West Virginia though.
- 21:17Speaker 13: Well, it matters because it'll matter to the country and
- 21:21Speaker 13: West Virginia matters for the country, and the country matters
- 21:24Speaker 13: to West Virginia.
- 21:26Speaker 12: If that trend continues.
- 21:28Speaker 13: If it gets if it doesn't go back up, it
- 21:31Speaker 13: can stay where it is or a good lower. But
- 21:33Speaker 13: if it then he'll lose the midterms, He'll lose both
- 21:36Speaker 13: thousands of Congress, and he'll be impeached again.
- 21:40Speaker 12: That's what will happen.
- 21:41Speaker 4: But I mean again in West Virginia. I mean, I
- 21:43Speaker 4: got a text here. It says several years ago there
- 21:45Speaker 4: was a report that said thirty five to thirty eight
- 21:47Speaker 4: percent of Trump's base would stick with him no matter
- 21:50Speaker 4: what Texas says. I believe that's still the case, and
- 21:53Speaker 4: the numbers are higher in West Virginia.
- 21:54Speaker 13: No, no question, No, this state's not't going anywhere. Well,
- 21:58Speaker 13: this state it's going to be uh uh for Donald
- 22:01Speaker 13: Trump and uh.
- 22:03Speaker 4: But but but I mean you say that, is there
- 22:07Speaker 4: anything And I said this on the Afternoon Show not
- 22:10Speaker 4: long ago, I said, is there anything if you're a
- 22:12Speaker 4: Trump supporter? Is there anything that could make you not
- 22:14Speaker 4: be a Trump supporter? And the and the answer I
- 22:16Speaker 4: got was if he starts behaving like Biden, Well he
- 22:21Speaker 4: did go to sleep, uh during during the Pope's funeral.
- 22:23Speaker 4: So there's that he took.
- 22:25Speaker 12: A take a live man or a dead woman.
- 22:30Speaker 4: You and Rusty, You and Rusty tried to you know,
- 22:33Speaker 4: he wanted to say that on the show. But I
- 22:34Speaker 4: mean again, I I just I don't see.
- 22:37Speaker 12: No, it's not gonna happen.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I don't see no matter what I mean. Even though
- 22:41Speaker 4: there's and and Stephen and I talked about this earlier, Danny,
- 22:43Speaker 4: there's a little bit of apprehension from folks in the
- 22:45Speaker 4: coal industry right now about about you know, they're not
- 22:49Speaker 4: a jumping ship, don't get me wrong. But but of
- 22:52Speaker 4: course they are. Of course they are. And Niosh in Morgantown,
- 22:55Speaker 4: I mean, this is this is a facility, a federal
- 22:58Speaker 4: facility that did a lot of work with black lung
- 23:01Speaker 4: and things of that nature. And you expect, you know,
- 23:04Speaker 4: Cecil Roberts and UMWA to come out and speak out against,
- 23:07Speaker 4: which they did. But others have also, even you know,
- 23:09Speaker 4: some Republicans have, even I mean Shelley Moore, Capito, Riley Moore,
- 23:14Speaker 4: all these people have come out and and said, mister President,
- 23:19Speaker 4: slow your role. Here.
- 23:20Speaker 12: Here's here's the problem.
- 23:22Speaker 13: As I said, I'm not sure there's a cohesive strategy,
- 23:27Speaker 13: a cohesive plan as to what to what to put
- 23:31Speaker 13: tariffs on whatnot, or we just are we just throwing
- 23:34Speaker 13: stuff against the wall. It just doesn't seem He does
- 23:37Speaker 13: it and then he takes it back, and then he
- 23:39Speaker 13: lowers it, and then he raises it, and it just
- 23:42Speaker 13: doesn't seem like there's anything strategic going on here, and
- 23:48Speaker 13: that worries me. Also, there is there's a guy named
- 23:54Speaker 13: Jack Goldsmith. He is a Republican, fairly conservative. He was
- 24:01Speaker 13: head of legal counsel in the w. Bush administration. He's
- 24:05Speaker 13: a very young man. Then he is this he is
- 24:08Speaker 13: the step son of Chucky O'Brien. Chucky O'Brien was the
- 24:14Speaker 13: adopted son of James riddle hoffa okay, okay, And this
- 24:20Speaker 13: guy wrote wrote a book called in Haff's Shadow about
- 24:23Speaker 13: his stepfather.
- 24:25Speaker 12: But he's also he's a brilliant guy.
- 24:27Speaker 13: And he was on one of the New York Times,
- 24:31Speaker 13: one of their audio fees, over an hour interview you
- 24:35Speaker 13: can get on YouTube. And right now there's one hundred
- 24:38Speaker 13: and fifty cases that the Trump Trump administration involved in
- 24:44Speaker 13: and they're going to depend on the Supreme Court to
- 24:47Speaker 13: solve these cases. Well, the problem with that is the
- 24:50Speaker 13: Supreme Court only here's one hundred and fifty or at
- 24:52Speaker 13: most two hundred cases of a year.
- 24:55Speaker 12: What what how's that going to work?
- 24:58Speaker 4: And the weekend?
- 25:00Speaker 12: Apparently what if they don't right?
- 25:03Speaker 2: Right?
- 25:04Speaker 13: And he's talking about running for a third term and
- 25:10Speaker 13: people say, we can't do that.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Yeah, he can. You want to know how explain it?
- 25:16Speaker 12: He gets.
- 25:18Speaker 13: Advance to run for president, he's a vice president, and
- 25:22Speaker 13: then as Susan Vance gets sworn in on January twentieth,
- 25:26Speaker 13: Dvance resigns and then Trump becomes president.
- 25:31Speaker 4: But I mean, look at his age, Danny, you don't
- 25:33Speaker 4: have to convince me.
- 25:35Speaker 13: I mean, I never voted for the guy. I mean,
- 25:38Speaker 13: but that's their strategy. And Steve Bannon kind of gave
- 25:42Speaker 13: it away when he was on Real Time. Yeah, yeah,
- 25:46Speaker 13: he said in the afternoon of January twentieth, twenty twenty eight,
- 25:51Speaker 13: he'll be president.
- 25:53Speaker 4: But he'll be what one hundred and eight at that point,
- 25:56Speaker 4: I mean.
- 25:57Speaker 12: He'll be eighty two.
- 25:58Speaker 13: No, it's not going to happened because his brand didn't
- 26:01Speaker 13: gonna hold up his unless something changes.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Well, I mean, he said, and I heard a lot
- 26:07Speaker 4: of talk about this on the Sunday shows, Danny, he said,
- 26:11Speaker 4: day one, prices come down. Well, we're one hundred days
- 26:14Speaker 4: in and prices aren't coming down. You know what, you
- 26:18Speaker 4: should have never said that he was going to take
- 26:19Speaker 4: it down on day one. That's that's that's that's the
- 26:21Speaker 4: first problem.
- 26:22Speaker 12: Politicians say anything to get a let Yeah, but if
- 26:27Speaker 12: he the only thing's going to bring prices down to recession.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Well, speaking of which, uh, the poll says fifty three
- 26:39Speaker 4: percent of those surveys say the economy has gotten worse
- 26:42Speaker 4: since Trump took office, and seventy two percent say they
- 26:45Speaker 4: fear the Trump economic policies will cause a recession.
- 26:49Speaker 13: Well, you know, Biden actually technically had a had a recession.
- 26:55Speaker 13: He had two quarters of negative growth, and so Trump
- 26:59Speaker 13: could have to you know, he could have from quarters
- 27:01Speaker 13: to negative growth. That's what a recession is. But I
- 27:06Speaker 13: don't think we're there yet. But the one thing that
- 27:09Speaker 13: Wall Street, I think the financial markets and the public.
- 27:14Speaker 12: They want they want a.
- 27:17Speaker 13: They want certainty, they want predictability, they want consistency, and
- 27:25Speaker 13: we don't have that right now. He can still change it,
- 27:28Speaker 13: but that's not his style, not at all.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Talking to former Charleston mayor Danny Jones, a Dave Island
- 27:32Speaker 4: showing five Dyeline brought to you apart by your hometown
- 27:35Speaker 4: baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Birds are off tonights.
- 27:38Speaker 4: They play Tuesday through Thursday at Southern Maryland and the
- 27:40Speaker 4: home opener of this Friday night over at Godmart Ballpark
- 27:43Speaker 4: again against Southern Maryland the Blue Crabs. First pitch of
- 27:46Speaker 4: the ballpark. Set for six thirty five tickets, schedules, promotions
- 27:48Speaker 4: and more of his a Dirty Birds Baseball dot com.
- 27:50Speaker 4: It is our tradition on Friday leading into opening night,
- 27:55Speaker 4: we'll have the manager in studio and several players will
- 27:58Speaker 4: be in studio as well for you twenty year anniversary.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Twenty years. Yeah, we Jill and I talked about that
- 28:04Speaker 4: when she was on the show last week, totally switching gears.
- 28:08Speaker 4: We'll get back to politics. When the ballpark was built,
- 28:13Speaker 4: take us through that.
- 28:15Speaker 12: You have no idea?
- 28:15Speaker 4: Yeah, oh god, we're all ears.
- 28:18Speaker 12: First thing.
- 28:19Speaker 13: When I was running for may or three, you know,
- 28:23Speaker 13: over twenty years ago, it was sixty five percent against
- 28:29Speaker 13: and ten percent somewhat against. So that's three quarters of
- 28:32Speaker 13: the people in this city were against the ballpark. So
- 28:38Speaker 13: my campaign manager, Larry Lacourt said, don't talk about that ballpark.
- 28:42Speaker 12: Now.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Why were they so much against the ballpark because of
- 28:46Speaker 4: wat Pale?
- 28:47Speaker 13: Yeah, the history of and we never had a winner.
- 28:50Speaker 13: We never had one that made money. And I remember
- 28:55Speaker 13: when we had priple a baseball here in the fifties
- 28:58Speaker 13: and the sixties and the seven we had the Charlies
- 29:02Speaker 13: and so but they've never had one that really made money,
- 29:10Speaker 13: or at least that could. It cost the city a
- 29:13Speaker 13: lot of money to have baseball here, and they just
- 29:16Speaker 13: thought it was a loser. We had five hundred people
- 29:19Speaker 13: go to a game when we had triple A baseball
- 29:21Speaker 13: in the fifties.
- 29:22Speaker 4: That's one step away from from the majors.
- 29:24Speaker 13: So when I got elected, I remember I was on
- 29:30Speaker 13: with Tom McGee and Mary Sue.
- 29:32Speaker 12: They said, what about that ballpark? I said, We're going
- 29:34Speaker 12: to build it. That's the first time I've ever said that.
- 29:38Speaker 4: And your campaign manager drove off the road at that.
- 29:40Speaker 12: Well, I'd already been elected.
- 29:41Speaker 4: Oh okay, okay, I'm sorry.
- 29:42Speaker 13: And so then I had to sell the thing, and
- 29:47Speaker 13: I sold it as a part of the arts. It's
- 29:51Speaker 13: an amenity, it's it's one of the reasons that people
- 29:56Speaker 13: come to and have something to do. While they're in
- 29:59Speaker 13: Charles to West Virginia, and that includes the people live
- 30:02Speaker 13: here and the people that don't.
- 30:05Speaker 12: And so.
- 30:08Speaker 13: We were using a lottery money we had gotten. They'd
- 30:12Speaker 13: had a plan, you know where we were getting twelve
- 30:15Speaker 13: million dollars which Craigo got for us. And so Jim
- 30:21Speaker 13: Lewis challenged it and went to court.
- 30:26Speaker 12: And we won.
- 30:30Speaker 13: But we're up and front the spring court. So we're
- 30:34Speaker 13: arguing the case. And we made the argument, they argued
- 30:39Speaker 13: against it, and then we had a press conference. And
- 30:45Speaker 13: of course I had worked Sprake Maynard like a lobbyist.
- 30:48Speaker 12: I mean I had.
- 30:48Speaker 13: He was a good friend of mine and even though
- 30:51Speaker 13: he was a justice, and I worked him to no end.
- 30:55Speaker 13: So we had press conference and I said, we can't
- 30:58Speaker 13: tell you how to rule, but we need you to
- 31:01Speaker 13: rule because we're out of town. Seven days later we
- 31:06Speaker 13: got a we got we won the case seven days later.
- 31:10Speaker 13: So they heard me.
- 31:11Speaker 4: And it's it's been, uh, you know, quite a as
- 31:16Speaker 4: you said, a destination point for people to come to Charleston,
- 31:19Speaker 4: since it not just for baseball. I mean there's concerts
- 31:21Speaker 4: and of course the Selango Law light the night, you know,
- 31:24Speaker 4: the Christmas lights and everything there's gonna be a whole
- 31:26Speaker 4: lot of people there on Wednesday night when Marshall and
- 31:28Speaker 4: WVU play baseball. Uh again, And I mean that game,
- 31:32Speaker 4: weather permitting, will be Wednesday night over at the ballpark.
- 31:35Speaker 4: And of course it went from Appalachian Power to now
- 31:36Speaker 4: it's a Gomart ballpark having that corporate entity. I know
- 31:40Speaker 4: a lot of people there was a lot of controversy
- 31:42Speaker 4: about it and whatever. But into I mean, you don't
- 31:45Speaker 4: find stadiums of any size, whether it's big leagues or
- 31:49Speaker 4: if you find very fewer college iteams that aren't named
- 31:51Speaker 4: after after somebody, it's some corporate person.
- 31:54Speaker 13: Well, I remember the old wat Pal Park in the fifties.
- 31:58Speaker 13: That's when you go to the bath and there was tobacco.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Juice on the floor, and that was a women's restaurant.
- 32:05Speaker 13: And by the time that Bob and Sherry got it,
- 32:08Speaker 13: they had cleaned it up. But Bob and Cherry said,
- 32:11Speaker 13: we're not staying here in this dump.
- 32:13Speaker 12: Now.
- 32:13Speaker 13: What happened was you either build us a new ballpark
- 32:17Speaker 13: or we're leaving. Well what shocked them and what threw
- 32:21Speaker 13: them for a curve with Jay Goldman says we'll build
- 32:25Speaker 13: your ballpark and That's that's where it came from. So
- 32:29Speaker 13: they were kind of stuck. But then when we got
- 32:32Speaker 13: the ballpark built.
- 32:33Speaker 12: They sold it. They sold it to Steve White.
- 32:36Speaker 13: I got a call from Paul Knight and said, what
- 32:38Speaker 13: do you think about the new owners of the ball team.
- 32:40Speaker 13: I said, I don't know what you're talking about. Oh yeah,
- 32:46Speaker 13: Steve and Tim Wilcox.
- 32:48Speaker 4: And so here we are twenty years later.
- 32:52Speaker 12: Twenty years later. Now they don't own it anymore now.
- 32:55Speaker 13: But I told him when they went, when they built
- 32:59Speaker 13: that restaurant over there, I said, look at us. They
- 33:02Speaker 13: spent a fortune on that restaurant. They didn't have to, said,
- 33:05Speaker 13: just take all the equipment out of that Bob Evans,
- 33:08Speaker 13: it's on the corner of court, and you didn't make
- 33:11Speaker 13: a restaurant out of all that stuff.
- 33:13Speaker 12: And they wouldn't. They wouldn't do it.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Talking to four for Charleston, Mary Danny Jones, a Dave

- 35:50Speaker 13: Well, the people like Trump, like Trump, and they're not

- 37:33Speaker 4: No, No, I don't think do you want to see

- 37:36Speaker 12: Go to one of his side people and say, you know,
- 37:38Speaker 12: this is really hurting us.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Yeah, Texas. Trump may be down right now, but according
- 37:42Speaker 4: to that ipso's poll, he still beats the Democrats in
- 37:44Speaker 4: Congress in terms of trust to handle the nation's main problems.
- 37:48Speaker 4: The silver lining for Trump is that the opposition party
- 37:51Speaker 4: remains out of favor. People said they trust him over
- 37:54Speaker 4: the Democrats in Congress to handle the nation's main problems
- 37:56Speaker 4: thirty seven to thirty percent, underscoring bipartisan disc action. Thirty
- 38:00Speaker 4: percent they said they don't trust either party further, while
- 38:03Speaker 4: sixty percent said Trump is out of touch with the
- 38:06Speaker 4: concerns of most people in the country. Even more, sixty
- 38:08Speaker 4: nine percent that the Democratic Party is out of touch.
- 38:12Speaker 4: It's sixty four percent for the Republican Party. Overall, it's
- 38:15Speaker 4: the political middle sixty two percent, and Trump is out
- 38:17Speaker 4: of touch, while substantially more say the Democratic parties out
- 38:20Speaker 4: of touch. That's a great point. Yeah, they may be
- 38:23Speaker 4: speaking against Donald Trump, but he's still in a lot
- 38:28Speaker 4: of people's eyes, he's still better than the Democrats, who
- 38:31Speaker 4: have like a negative and at this point they have
- 38:34Speaker 4: like a negative approval rate.
- 38:35Speaker 13: At this point, we see all those Democrats on the
- 38:37Speaker 13: steps of the Capitol, Corey Bucker and the Jefferies, the
- 38:42Speaker 13: leader of the in the House, and there's a lot
- 38:46Speaker 13: of virtue signaling going on, but that's not catching on.
- 38:49Speaker 12: No, it's not helping them.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Going back to the ballpark, Texas, it seems the Go
- 38:53Speaker 4: Mart ballpark story is very similar to the current issue.
- 38:56Speaker 4: We have the civic auditorium. It's too old to be
- 38:59Speaker 4: able to function as a modern facility and needs to
- 39:01Speaker 4: be replaced. I think what they were talking they're not saying,
- 39:04Speaker 4: if I'm reading this right, they're not talking about the
- 39:05Speaker 4: ballpark now. They're talking about because it's twenty years old now.
- 39:09Speaker 4: But they're talking about the Watpowell Park story. What would
- 39:12Speaker 4: you do with the civic auditorium or the or the
- 39:14Speaker 4: municipal auditorium.
- 39:15Speaker 13: I should say, I don't know what she knows. I
- 39:18Speaker 13: don't know what's wrong with it. I don't know what
- 39:20Speaker 13: can fix it. And you can always sell it. A
- 39:25Speaker 13: church would buy it.
- 39:26Speaker 12: And but that's a big piece of property in the
- 39:31Speaker 12: middle of the city, and they have parking, and it's
- 39:36Speaker 12: a beautiful theater. It's got great accusion. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 39:39Speaker 12: they don't. I mean, I hate to use the old expression.
- 39:42Speaker 4: But it's true. They don't build them like that anymore.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Some of these old theaters, we got a lot of
- 39:45Speaker 4: them around West Virginia that are that way as well.
- 39:48Speaker 13: Helped by the Civilian Conservation Corps. That was a Roosevelt project.
- 39:53Speaker 4: What do you think about the Town Center raising parking
- 39:56Speaker 4: to five dollars?
- 39:58Speaker 12: Well, who goes there anyway?
- 40:01Speaker 4: People that are killing time when they're like going to
- 40:03Speaker 4: something at the Colonel had been Convention Center. I told
- 40:05Speaker 4: the story on the air a couple of weeks ago.
- 40:07Speaker 4: My wife and I went to the home show and
- 40:09Speaker 4: she did want to run in for something at the
- 40:11Speaker 4: Town Center, and so I just I walked in. I
- 40:13Speaker 4: took a bench and I just sat there Saturday afternoon.
- 40:16Speaker 4: There may be four or five people that passed me
- 40:18Speaker 4: walking by, and they were people that were in town
- 40:21Speaker 4: for there was some sort of a cheerleading competition or
- 40:23Speaker 4: something like. And they had this look, and I'm going
- 40:25Speaker 4: to try to explain this on radio. They had this
- 40:27Speaker 4: look like you like going back to your hometown and
- 40:30Speaker 4: it's in ruins and you just look up at the
- 40:32Speaker 4: sky and you're like, you know, what the hell happened here? No,
- 40:36Speaker 4: they kind of had that.
- 40:37Speaker 13: Look, it's an embarrassment. It's an embarrassment to the city.
- 40:42Speaker 4: But there's really nothing the city can do about it.
- 40:44Speaker 12: No, but this owner.
- 40:46Speaker 13: I mean, if you'd had the two restaurants pay their expenses,
- 40:51Speaker 13: three restaurants two how many what the one at each end,
- 40:56Speaker 13: if they'd just paid their expenses and let them stay
- 40:58Speaker 13: there because a lot of people, you know, Todd Waller
- 41:02Speaker 13: and the other place, but it's it's almost like they
- 41:05Speaker 13: don't want him there.
- 41:07Speaker 4: Not playing conspiracy theorists, but if you if you do
- 41:10Speaker 4: any research, this kind of seems to be the way
- 41:12Speaker 4: that group operates. And it's it's a shame because they
- 41:15Speaker 4: came into town, Danny, with all of this fanfare, and
- 41:18Speaker 4: I know, I did a segment with the mayor and
- 41:21Speaker 4: we had mister Hall, the whole group on the on
- 41:24Speaker 4: the on the line with us about all the great
- 41:26Speaker 4: things he was going to do, and nothing, nothing got
- 41:30Speaker 4: nothing got done, and we just did constantly hear about
- 41:32Speaker 4: more and more places going out there. Texas, NPR and
- 41:36Speaker 4: PBS rely on federal funding for thirteen percent and eighteen
- 41:39Speaker 4: percent of their budgets, respectively. Elon Musk's companies have received
- 41:43Speaker 4: thirty eight billion dollars in federal funding over two decades.
- 41:47Speaker 4: He's just one of the billionaires gobbling up federal money. Now,
- 41:50Speaker 4: who are the welfare queens?
- 41:51Speaker 12: Now, wait a minute, is this is this his space?
- 41:56Speaker 4: I'm presuming yes, I'm presuming this with the text.
- 41:59Speaker 13: Means well, I'm not against that. I mean, when I
- 42:03Speaker 13: got those people out of out of space, I bet
- 42:06Speaker 13: going through him is probably cheaper than us building and ourselves.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Text says the difference. In Biden's recession, he was handed
- 42:17Speaker 4: to fumbling economy from a fumbled COVID response and Putin
- 42:20Speaker 4: invaded Ukraine, which caused a lot of turmoil. Trump's policies
- 42:24Speaker 4: slowed down the economy that may lead to a recession
- 42:27Speaker 4: external factory factors versus self inflicted decisions.
- 42:32Speaker 13: Yeah, and you've got they tried out different people to
- 42:36Speaker 13: talk about it that have different philosophies. There's conflict within
- 42:40Speaker 13: the administration. You've got the Commerce Secretary. I mean, these

- 42:55Speaker 4: Yeah, he's real awesome in everything. Over the weekend, Texas,
- 42:59Speaker 4: speaking of large buildings being questioned, if Danny had his
- 43:02Speaker 4: knowledge today that he had when the town Center was built,
- 43:05Speaker 4: would he still support the destruction of the neighborhood the
- 43:08Speaker 4: town center was built over to construct the town Center.
- 43:12Speaker 12: Well, it was all part of urban renewal. And I
- 43:14Speaker 12: didn't have a say in it.
- 43:15Speaker 4: That you weren't mayor at the time.
- 43:16Speaker 13: So know only that it happened when I was in Vietnam,
- 43:19Speaker 13: So I know that my father was sending me articles.
- 43:26Speaker 13: It wasn't just that. It wasn't just the town Center,
