- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready for another tiny Dutch lesson? Lucas: Absolutely. Today we're going to the market. A vegetable market. Luna: Oh, I love markets. I'm always overwhelmed by all the choices though. Lucas: That's why we'll learn just a few key phrases. First: 'Ik wil graag groenten kopen.' That means 'I would like to buy vegetables.' Luna: Ik wil graag groenten kopen. Ik wil graag groenten kopen. That's a mouthful. Lucas: You've got it. 'Ik wil graag' is polite for 'I would like.' 'Groenten' is vegetables. 'Kopen' is to buy. Luna: So 'Ik wil graag groenten kopen.' I can imagine saying that at a market stall. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's say you spot a cucumber. You ask: 'Wat kost deze komkommer?' — 'How much is this cucumber?' Luna: Wat kost deze komkommer? Wat kost deze komkommer? Hmm, 'deze' means 'this'? Lucas: Yes. 'Deze' for 'de' words like 'komkommer.' 'Wat kost' is 'how much costs.' So literally 'what costs this cucumber?' Luna: Wat kost deze komkommer. Got it. Lucas: The vendor might answer: 'De komkommer kost twee euro.' — 'The cucumber costs two euros.' Luna: De komkommer kost twee euro. So 'kost' is 'costs.' De komkommer kost twee euro. Lucas: Perfect. Now suppose you want tomatoes. You can say: 'Ik neem deze tomaten.' — 'I'll take these tomatoes.' Luna: Ik neem deze tomaten. 'Neem' is 'take,' like 'I take these tomatoes.' Ik neem deze tomaten. Lucas: Yes. And then to ask the total: 'Hoeveel kost het?' — 'How much does it cost?' Luna: Hoeveel kost het? That's a really useful one. Hoeveel kost het? Lucas: The vendor says: 'Dat is vijf euro.' — 'That is five euros.' Luna: Dat is vijf euro. So 'dat is' means 'that is.' Dat is vijf euro. Lucas: Let's practice the whole exchange. I'm the vendor, you're the customer. Luna: Okay. Ik wil graag groenten kopen. Wat kost deze komkommer? Lucas: De komkommer kost twee euro. Luna: Ik neem deze tomaten. Hoeveel kost het? Lucas: Dat is vijf euro. Luna: That felt good. I can actually do this. Lucas: You did great. Let's say you want to ask for a specific vegetable. 'Ik zoek uien.' — 'I'm looking for onions.' Luna: Ik zoek uien. 'Zoek' is 'look for.' Ik zoek uien. Lucas: And the vendor might say: 'De uien zijn hier.' — 'The onions are here.' Luna: De uien zijn hier. 'Zijn' is 'are.' De uien zijn hier. Lucas: Let's put it all together. One more time: 'Ik wil graag groenten kopen.' Luna: Ik wil graag groenten kopen. Lucas: 'Wat kost deze komkommer?' Luna: Wat kost deze komkommer? Lucas: 'De komkommer kost twee euro.' Luna: De komkommer kost twee euro. Lucas: 'Ik neem deze tomaten.' Luna: Ik neem deze tomaten. Lucas: 'Hoeveel kost het?' Luna: Hoeveel kost het? Lucas: 'Dat is vijf euro.' Luna: Dat is vijf euro. I think I remember them all. Lucas: You do. Practice these phrases when you go to a market, or just say them to yourself. Repetition helps. Luna: I'll practice while I'm cooking. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: You're welcome. And thanks for joining us. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo.
