- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Still Going, the leaves are making some moves. Are you kidding?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Meet trading Joseph wool for Sam Rison? Huh yeah? Trade
- 0:28Speaker 1: season starter right now? What else could be happening this obseason? Plus,
- 0:30Speaker 1: we're looking ahead to the draft and of course free
- 0:32Speaker 1: agency and major news as Jimmy Hiller is now the
- 0:35Speaker 1: head coach of the Twamy Police. Our special guest is
- 0:37Speaker 1: Catherine Tappan, one of the great broadcasters in our business.
- 0:41Speaker 1: She's been excellent for years at NBC. She tells us
- 0:43Speaker 1: about covering the Olympics, talking to Jack Hughes after he
- 0:45Speaker 1: scored the winning goal for USA, and also being a
- 0:48Speaker 1: teammate of Jason Dumurz an NHL network. Again, we are
- 0:51Speaker 1: presented by iHeart podcast in the National Hockey League episode
- 0:54Speaker 1: number eighty nine, Jad, We're gonna do at least a
- 0:57Speaker 1: couple more. We'll do it, like I said, one next week.
- 0:59Speaker 1: We got the draft obviously, the free agency and then
- 1:01Speaker 1: maybe a summer heighthus but can you believe nearing in
- 1:03Speaker 1: one hundred episodes of Unscripted?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Is it crazy? Giving the fans what they want? Whether
- 1:11Speaker 2: they want it or not. No means no does not
- 1:13Speaker 2: apply to this podcast. We shove it down in halves easy,
- 1:17Speaker 2: jay No.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I just love that it's twice a week. During the
- 1:19Speaker 1: cup Falns, we end u getting three extra episodes.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well, the fucking Knights couldn't figure it out and
- 1:25Speaker 2: bring it to seven, so they cost us an episodical
- 1:29Speaker 2: bump of money, So I blame them.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We're just trying to get to one hundred. Then we
- 1:32Speaker 1: get the residuals. Then everyone's laughing.
- 1:34Speaker 2: All right, oh, are we on residuals yet?
- 1:36Speaker 1: Well, if you get to one hundred, maybe maybe you
- 1:38Speaker 1: get a couple bucks out of it. I tell us
- 1:40Speaker 1: say no. Let's begin, though, with the news that of Toronto,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Jim Hiller is now the head coach. What your boy
- 1:45Speaker 1: Joe Pavelski apparently was a candidate. I think we are
- 1:47Speaker 1: fifty five people. I know that's accurate enough. Someone throw
- 1:49Speaker 1: it out there. Jim Miller is their new head coach.
- 1:51Speaker 1: He spent parts of the past three seasons as the
- 1:53Speaker 1: head coach in Los Angeles. He got fired in March.
- 1:56Speaker 1: He previously worked as an assistant in Toronto for four
- 1:58Speaker 1: seasons under Mike Babcock. I'm sure Jim Hiller's nice stuff guy.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I think he's a good coach, hitty, but he's not
- 2:03Speaker 1: the big spot actually high. I think Maple Leae fans
- 2:05Speaker 1: were hoping for well. I heard Jimmy Hiller to the leafs.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I heard a bit of a lead balloon being dropped
- 2:09Speaker 1: in Toronto.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Your thoughts, uh, listen. I the fact that he's was
- 2:17Speaker 2: in Toronto, I think held weight because that has to me,
- 2:22Speaker 2: that means that Austin Matthews was part of that in
- 2:27Speaker 2: some capacity. Because Austin Matthews had him, he had some
- 2:31Speaker 2: pretty good seasons under him. I think it's I think
- 2:35Speaker 2: for me, I think this is a step in the
- 2:40Speaker 2: positive direction. You know, I don't even want to get
- 2:42Speaker 2: into the Joseph Wold trade because that one a little
- 2:45Speaker 2: perplexing to me. But I know I think the awful.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But I think it was more for a mill Andre,
- 2:50Speaker 2: which is like defense depth. I like him. He's a
- 2:53Speaker 2: smaller defenseman. He's got a little offense, puck moving but
- 2:55Speaker 2: a little like a Yeah, he's a sex He's like
- 2:59Speaker 2: a Troy Stetcher, a little bit better skater. But for
- 3:03Speaker 2: the Jim Hiller high Jim Hiller has been around for
- 3:05Speaker 2: a while, He's had a playing career, he's been in Toronto,
- 3:08Speaker 2: so he understands the market. I think that's important because
- 3:12Speaker 2: you can't just throw somebody, you know, a baby, a
- 3:14Speaker 2: baby deer into Toronto Maple leafs Land because they're gonna
- 3:17Speaker 2: get asolute car. Steve Simmons is going to have his
- 3:19Speaker 2: way with him, have the Steve Simmons is going to
- 3:21Speaker 2: have the ballgag on him and in twenty minutes. If
- 3:25Speaker 2: you need a guy that understands, so Jim Hiller might have,
- 3:29Speaker 2: you know, a relationship as well with a lot of
- 3:31Speaker 2: the media. Could help. Might not be the biggest, sexiest higher,
- 3:34Speaker 2: but listen, sometimes those hires have have proven to do
- 3:39Speaker 2: well and you know, you look at Knoblock and Edmonton.
- 3:43Speaker 2: He did well for the two years and did a
- 3:46Speaker 2: really good job. Wasn't the sexiest high. Everybody's like, what
- 3:48Speaker 2: the hell's going on? It's you know, this is Connor
- 3:51Speaker 2: McDavid's agent pulling the strings. But it worked out, and
- 3:55Speaker 2: it worked out for as long as it did. Now
- 3:57Speaker 2: with Jim Hiller, I think I think the comfortability with
- 4:00Speaker 2: Neelander and Matthews will probably be a big thing. And
- 4:03Speaker 2: and sometimes when you're in a assistant you're a little
- 4:05Speaker 2: bit more personable to the players, and you're also able
- 4:09Speaker 2: to have more personal conversations with them, so you become closer.
- 4:15Speaker 2: And I don't know Jim Hiller personally, but my thought
- 4:18Speaker 2: is that he had a good report with those guys
- 4:20Speaker 2: and now it's just going to be it's going to
- 4:22Speaker 2: be like an easy transition. So I'm interesting to see
- 4:24Speaker 2: what they bring in terms of assistants around. But I
- 4:28Speaker 2: don't mind it. Listen, he stretches set of a.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Bland guy, a little cold to media, and so far
- 4:33Speaker 1: in his career he's there's the guy that couldn't beat
- 4:34Speaker 1: the Oilers in the playoffs.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yes, but they're not going to face the Oilers in
- 4:38Speaker 2: the playoffs. They're gonna get the They're gonna get the Panthers.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Somebody can fucking relax.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Well, I guess that's a good way looking at things.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I guess they were. You know, I've nothing surprised me
- 4:47Speaker 2: anymore in the Lake. Nothing does. And I don't know
- 4:52Speaker 2: who else you you interview fifty five guys, and we
- 4:56Speaker 2: kind of talked about it before, Like I do believe
- 5:00Speaker 2: that what they were doing. I had a good conversation
- 5:03Speaker 2: with I think it was Mike Johnson, who's who's been
- 5:05Speaker 2: around that, and I'm going to kind of reach out
- 5:06Speaker 2: to him and maybe we get Mike mj on the
- 5:08Speaker 2: podcast too, because he's a great one to have on.
- 5:12Speaker 2: He loves to talk, which is great, awesome. Oh, he
- 5:16Speaker 2: can fill it up. He just let him run one question,
- 5:19Speaker 2: let him run. He'll take all your he'll take all
- 5:21Speaker 2: your answers with you can't give him anything. He's that
- 5:24Speaker 2: classic old school broadcaster like he'll ask you like, oh,
- 5:28Speaker 2: what are you thinking? Yeah, and he's so intelligent you'll
- 5:31Speaker 2: tell him like, oh yeah, I think like the stick
- 5:32Speaker 2: checks were pretty good and he'll take it. In the
- 5:35Speaker 2: first segment, I leave you with nothing, just to see
- 5:38Speaker 2: if you can, just to see if you can battle anyway.
- 5:41Speaker 2: But he's great. Yeah, that's my Jim Miller thoughts. I
- 5:43Speaker 2: just think, you know, they got the fifty five to
- 5:46Speaker 2: one hundred people they interviewed, and I think that was
- 5:50Speaker 2: more to get a sense of what they need and
- 5:52Speaker 2: take notes. But I think Jim Miller must have knocked
- 5:56Speaker 2: their socks off with what he thinks and what he
- 5:58Speaker 2: wants them to do. Maybe I just hope it's not them.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Another coach talking about playing a defensive style and then
- 6:06Speaker 2: they suck on defense.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Well, we shall see. I got I think it's an
- 6:10Speaker 1: underwhelming move and we'll get to that trade in just
- 6:11Speaker 1: a second. Meantime, surprising news at Vegas. John Terrella is
- 6:14Speaker 1: not back hanging a second eight games left in the season.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I took you guys within two wins win the Steley Cup.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Founder tell me no now. Towards previously said he didn't
- 6:22Speaker 1: plan to come back. He didn't give a definitive answer
- 6:24Speaker 1: immediately after the Golden Knights lost to Carolina the Cup final,
- 6:27Speaker 1: but reports are apparently he does want to coach next season.
- 6:30Speaker 1: He's turned sixty eight years old next year. Some rumors
- 6:33Speaker 1: apparently point to Ryan Craig been the headman of the
- 6:35Speaker 1: HL squad in Henderson the past three seasons after being
- 6:38Speaker 1: assistant with the Golden Knights for six seasons. So your
- 6:41Speaker 1: thoughts on JD If I'm Torts and Hayes, I took
- 6:43Speaker 1: you guys in the Cup final. I think he still
- 6:45Speaker 1: wants to coach, and this feels like it's a Vegas decision.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Why would Kelly McCrimmon not bring him back is an
- 6:50Speaker 1: age thing is you want to bring in your own guy.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I want a guy who's here for the next five
- 6:53Speaker 1: six years. What's your thought process?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Uh, you know, I think I think it was probably
- 6:59Speaker 2: Kelly McCrimmon. This was agreed upon probably early on, and
- 7:03Speaker 2: they probably said listen, no matter what happens, unless maybe
- 7:07Speaker 2: you win, and to resounding yes from the players that
- 7:10Speaker 2: they want you back. That will bring you back. But
- 7:12Speaker 2: I think they, you know, they probably in this time
- 7:16Speaker 2: that towards took over, Kelly mccriminal was probably looking around
- 7:19Speaker 2: for another coach, maybe had Craig as a guy that
- 7:23Speaker 2: was coming up and was earmarked to be the next
- 7:25Speaker 2: head coach and kind of usher in cause again, like
- 7:29Speaker 2: if you're bringing John Tordrella and you're probably gonna have
- 7:31Speaker 2: to pay him, like his minimum is probably fairly big.
- 7:34Speaker 2: They probably didn't want to pay somebody that much. They
- 7:37Speaker 2: have some interesting decisions to make this year too, because
- 7:40Speaker 2: I don't think they expected to get to the finals.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I think they knew they had a good team and
- 7:43Speaker 2: were confident, But I can't imagine Kelly mccriminal was back
- 7:47Speaker 2: there saying we're going to go to the finals. One
- 7:50Speaker 2: thousand percent. So I think this was all. This was
- 7:54Speaker 2: all the cherry on top of the cherry on top
- 7:56Speaker 2: for this organization which can do no wrong. So and
- 8:00Speaker 2: I don't know if the relationship would. John sometimes can
- 8:05Speaker 2: last longer than you know. I think he's always just
- 8:10Speaker 2: as he's gotten older, I think he's got a shelf life. Now,
- 8:14Speaker 2: if I'm John, I'm doing the exact same thing I
- 8:16Speaker 2: did this year. Next year, I'm calling every team.
- 8:18Speaker 1: He's just gonna wait around, be like a bullpen guy.
- 8:20Speaker 2: He just comes around, bring in that middle reliever, can
- 8:24Speaker 2: turn into the closer.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Towards to Edmonton.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Do it right now. He Torts to Edmonton immediately.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Gets a rise of a guy. So McDavid's like, it's
- 8:32Speaker 1: win now. So give me two years of Torts and Edmonton.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Why not if you get I would love to see
- 8:37Speaker 2: Connor and Leon witho towarts two years. That's it. It
- 8:41Speaker 2: would be interesting. I wonder if it would work.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I mean this, at one point he would go sideways
- 8:45Speaker 1: and Torts would call one of them out. It'd be incredible.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You're like, well, you got to play better out there.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I'm like, holy shit, he just called him out.
- 8:51Speaker 2: He's he's honest with the media at times when he's
- 8:55Speaker 2: like when he wants to call out a player, but
- 8:57Speaker 2: he's always defending them. So it's like he's always got
- 8:59Speaker 2: your back. Anybody have heard that's played for hims Like
- 9:02Speaker 2: he loves the guys, wants you to be the bad
- 9:04Speaker 2: but he's the hardest shit on you. So I could
- 9:06Speaker 2: see John going to Edmonton and maybe towards that's what
- 9:09Speaker 2: he's looking for. But is Vegas gonna allow him to
- 9:12Speaker 2: talk to.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Vegas? Will put the block? They just don't let anybody.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Headline you fucking talked to Edmonton. You're done.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Let's talk about Edmonton again. The NHL officially beginning its
- 9:25Speaker 1: investigation into Babs. The Oilers should know if they can
- 9:28Speaker 1: hire Babcock as coach whence his investigation concludes. But it
- 9:31Speaker 1: seems messy. According to Elliott Frieman, Babcock met with Oilers
- 9:34Speaker 1: executives ownership in a small group of players. Once the
- 9:37Speaker 1: NHL and nhlp were contacted about the possibility of the
- 9:41Speaker 1: Oilers hiring Babcock, the players union reported negatively. Friedman wrote
- 9:45Speaker 1: on sports and there are reports of issues beyond looking
- 9:48Speaker 1: at players' phones that got Babcock into trouble in Columbus
- 9:51Speaker 1: when he resigned. Then the NHL and NHLPA dropped the matter,
- 9:55Speaker 1: but sources indicate there was at least one other conversation
- 9:58Speaker 1: that caused concern. I'm telling right now, Judy, it's not
- 10:00Speaker 1: gonna be an easier road for Babs to come back.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Well, when you're prick, this is what happens, you know, right,
- 10:08Speaker 2: the chickens come home to roost. Now, I don't know
- 10:11Speaker 2: him personally, and I know e J. Raddock's a good
- 10:14Speaker 2: friend of his, I think, and has a lot of
- 10:16Speaker 2: nice things to say, So I can't speak on I
- 10:18Speaker 2: can only speak on what I know that he's done.
- 10:22Speaker 2: The Mike Madanno, the Johann Franzen, the Mitch Marner and
- 10:28Speaker 2: then the phone that to me does not you know,
- 10:33Speaker 2: doesn't scream good guy remind me and fan and had
- 10:39Speaker 2: like mental health issues and apparently he just berated him,
- 10:42Speaker 2: like and guys on the team to the point where
- 10:45Speaker 2: guys in the team there's a couple of articles that
- 10:46Speaker 2: came out where they were like, I think it was
- 10:48Speaker 2: Commodore talked too. Commondo might have mentioned it, but certain
- 10:52Speaker 2: guys that had him were like dude, like he it
- 10:55Speaker 2: was like unwarranted, like just leave the kid alone, like
- 11:00Speaker 2: you know, the horse is dead, stop beating it. And
- 11:02Speaker 2: then the Mike Madanno fourteen you know, fourteen ninety nine
- 11:07Speaker 2: doesn't give him the game then doubles down on it. Yeah,
- 11:10Speaker 2: you know, the Mitch Marner stuff, the saga, the phone stuff.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And then now I don't know what happened. The fact
- 11:15Speaker 2: that the fact that the NHLPA is sitting on that
- 11:19Speaker 2: and they're like, hey, babs, try to come back into
- 11:22Speaker 2: the league. Watch what happens. They have some bombshell that
- 11:27Speaker 2: they must have told Bowman as well and said, hey,
- 11:30Speaker 2: we have something. Do not hire this guy, and they
- 11:33Speaker 2: said they called their bluff. Now the PA is like, okay,
- 11:37Speaker 2: here it is, and I don't.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Know what it is.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I don't even want to speculate what it is. If
- 11:42Speaker 2: he's like whipping guys or something. Oh jesuz, but why
- 11:47Speaker 2: do you give me that.
- 11:48Speaker 1: If you're whipping a guy? I mean, think about it.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I love Shelley. The fact that Chris Chellio has called
- 11:52Speaker 1: up Mike Popcork he accused him of verbal assault. Think
- 11:55Speaker 1: about that. You've been in dress rooms your entire life.
- 11:57Speaker 1: You're an athlete. There's one thing athletes can take, its abuse,
- 12:01Speaker 1: especially verbally. For the Christillus to go, what that was
- 12:04Speaker 1: was verbal assault. Think of what level Babcock was humiliating
- 12:08Speaker 1: Johann Franz.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and I wonder if has anybody, like any player
- 12:13Speaker 2: like tried to fight him or grab him or anything
- 12:15Speaker 2: like that.
- 12:16Speaker 1: I'm surprised it hasn't happened.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Yeah, the teams that the teams that he was coaching,
- 12:21Speaker 2: those teams that were just so incredibly good. The fact
- 12:24Speaker 2: that all of them was all the majority of him
- 12:28Speaker 2: I I've heard hated him is a crazy notion.
- 12:32Speaker 1: So Pavel Datchu, Kenrick Zenderberg, like Brian Rafalski, I.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Think they just all were like, yeah, just that that
- 12:38Speaker 2: team ran itself. Yes, that's true, But I don't know.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Maybe he's worked on himself.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I mean, listen, I ever gone gets a second, This
- 12:47Speaker 1: would be his third chance, fourth.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Chance, fifth, Well, I want I want to know what
- 12:52Speaker 2: this is though.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Were there smoke, there's fire, free you.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Gotta get get David Elliott's gonna find it. He's gonna
- 12:58Speaker 2: sniff that out.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's either gonna be PAGs or free somebody one of
- 13:00Speaker 1: those guys are gonn tell Us and THEY'RENNA. Let us know.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Here in the Nice tell the scripted. One more thought
- 13:04Speaker 1: here in Toronto, I want to ask about Morgan Riley.
- 13:05Speaker 1: He just finished his thirteen season in Toronto. Speculation you
- 13:08Speaker 1: could be on the move. Now comes report from Chris Johnson.
- 13:11Speaker 1: The thirty two year old will not waive his no
- 13:13Speaker 1: movement clause four more seasons. JD in the contract seven
- 13:17Speaker 1: point five million per year. It's a brutal deal. And
- 13:19Speaker 1: he's like, I'm not going anywhere. Tough luck.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah that he just said tough, not say I'm stand. Yeah,
- 13:26Speaker 2: I'm not fucking leaving.
- 13:27Speaker 1: No, he pulled the leader capri at Wolf of Wall Street.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I'm not leaving.
- 13:30Speaker 2: I mean you look at their decor. Oh god, it's
- 13:33Speaker 2: this tough, brutal. You got Brendan one more year, Brendan
- 13:36Speaker 2: Carlo at three point four eight. You got Ekman Larson,
- 13:40Speaker 2: who's been their best ee at three point five for
- 13:43Speaker 2: two more years. You got Tanev at four and a
- 13:45Speaker 2: half for four more years. I worry about his health.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Jake mccab's at four and a half. It's not bad.
- 13:53Speaker 2: And then Morgan Riley, Oh god, this is this is
- 13:58Speaker 2: tough with nothing in the pipeline. Yeah you got you
- 14:00Speaker 2: got a meal Andre Now, No.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Me, I'm gonna get into that a second. That's a trade.
- 14:05Speaker 2: He's gotta mail and he's an RFA, so you gotta
- 14:08Speaker 2: give them five and a half. I'm I wonder maybe
- 14:13Speaker 2: Jim Hiller that trade too. You know, Morgan Riley was there,
- 14:17Speaker 2: Maybe he could unlock something. I don't know. I can't
- 14:20Speaker 2: speak if he was running the deer the forwards, but
- 14:23Speaker 2: maybe that helps. But the fact that he doesn't want
- 14:26Speaker 2: to wave that is crazy to me.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd really be stuck here in a bad team.
- 14:31Speaker 2: He's and he gets bearaded by the media. Like somebody
- 14:36Speaker 2: would take him, like there there's a lack of d
- 14:39Speaker 2: in the league, Like the Sharks would take him. He'd
- 14:41Speaker 2: be great on the Sharks.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Go play with Celabrini well, Speaking of the veteran defenseman,
- 14:45Speaker 1: According to Pierre Lebron, John Carlston meeting free agency summer
- 14:48Speaker 1: does not want to go back to the Ducks. Doesn't
- 14:50Speaker 1: want to be there. Carlson fourteen points sixteen games in
- 14:53Speaker 1: the regular season in Anaheim before getting six assists and
- 14:56Speaker 1: twelve playoff games. According to his agent, he wants to
- 14:58Speaker 1: go to the East Coast. So that's a major shake
- 15:00Speaker 1: up Anaheim, Washington, Washington, maybe the Flyers. Jacob Truba, radco
- 15:06Speaker 1: gutis also entering free agency. You get your boy Zellweger
- 15:09Speaker 1: and mint Yakov restricted free agents. So if John Carlston
- 15:13Speaker 1: leaves Anaheim, that's a big deal, not only Orange County
- 15:15Speaker 1: but wherever he goes on.
- 15:16Speaker 2: The East Coast. Yeah, that was a big swing for them,
- 15:19Speaker 2: and you know, to not have it work out and
- 15:24Speaker 2: not be able to keep him there, you give up.
- 15:26Speaker 1: A conditional first rounder along with a third rounder to
- 15:28Speaker 1: get him.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, I think Anaheim's gonna have to really retool
- 15:32Speaker 2: their defense on the fly. I think Mason McTavish is
- 15:34Speaker 2: gonna be on the move. He'll be he'll be on
- 15:36Speaker 2: the block and be he'll be kind of thrown out
- 15:41Speaker 2: there as bait to drag in a couple demon maybe
- 15:44Speaker 2: some unhappy demon or on the league. Rasmus Anderson to Anaheim. Yeah,
- 15:50Speaker 2: they'll pay him potentially, because Rasmus kind of played himself
- 15:53Speaker 2: out of a contract in Vegas. I don't think they're
- 15:56Speaker 2: signing him. You have a couple guys, so to me,
- 16:01Speaker 2: it's gonna be an interesting offseason for Anaheim. Can they
- 16:03Speaker 2: continue to build on what they had last year? Will
- 16:06Speaker 2: they build it? I don't know. I'm a little nervous.
- 16:11Speaker 2: But pad Verbeek he is he has been shooting from
- 16:16Speaker 2: the hip since he came in, so I think he's
- 16:18Speaker 2: gonna make a move. He's gonna move McTavish, bringing a
- 16:21Speaker 2: couple of d maybe drafted d Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 1: As you say, Anaheim was a team on the rise
- 16:28Speaker 1: last year, so to have some shakeups on defense, it'll
- 16:30Speaker 1: be interesting how that.
- 16:31Speaker 2: They'll bring Trube. They'll bring Truba back.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Truba comes back, then Goude's probably gone. We come back.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Catherine Tappan has been a great broadcaster for a long time.
- 16:38Speaker 1: One of our teammates NHL Network. She gets the pleasure
- 16:40Speaker 1: of working with Jason de Murz, plus stories of Mike
- 16:42Speaker 1: Millbury and what it was like interviewing Jack Hughes for
- 16:45Speaker 1: the USA down Canada at the Olympics. All that more
- 16:47Speaker 1: coming up next after this so a NHL inscripted our
- 17:04Speaker 1: next cast. One of those versatile broadcasters in sports you
- 17:07Speaker 1: has spent years at NBC Sports covering everything from Notre
- 17:09Speaker 1: Dame football, to the NFL to the Winter and Summer Olympics,
- 17:12Speaker 1: which she was mainly known as the studio host for
- 17:14Speaker 1: the network's NHL coverage. She has also been a preak
- 17:17Speaker 1: presence at NHL Network for years. You know where you
- 17:19Speaker 1: love her, Catherine Tapping, Kat, It's great to see you.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Great to see you too.
- 17:22Speaker 4: I'd say great to say c J D as well,
- 17:24Speaker 4: but I just saw him in Vegas.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Missed me so much he had to get me on
- 17:28Speaker 3: the podcast.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Two days later I had to. I was like, we
- 17:31Speaker 2: got to get kid.
- 17:32Speaker 3: T I love it.
- 17:33Speaker 1: O Kats. You know, it's the best time to get
- 17:35Speaker 1: the request because then you can't say no. You just
- 17:37Speaker 1: spent how many days together and you go you available Thursday?
- 17:39Speaker 3: Go oh, actually, I know, Well that's what happened.
- 17:41Speaker 4: It's like I ended up with, you know, by coming
- 17:43Speaker 4: home Monday instead of Thursday. I ended up with three
- 17:45Speaker 4: days basically at home.
- 17:46Speaker 3: So I was like, yeah, I'm available.
- 17:48Speaker 4: I got nothing else going on except I got to
- 17:50Speaker 4: powerwash my deck and weave my garden.
- 17:52Speaker 3: So you're stalling me from doing that. I appreciate it.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I said, I've got some yard work as well. So
- 17:57Speaker 1: this is the upside of our day. You've been a
- 18:00Speaker 1: great presence at NHL Network. We love having you there.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Obviously does are such a great job at NHL now.
- 18:03Speaker 1: You've a great can ext with the players and have
- 18:05Speaker 1: covered and loved the sport for so many years. This
- 18:07Speaker 1: Stanley Cup file. At one point, Kat's you know, the
- 18:10Speaker 1: likes of Pat Maroon is a three time Cup Champier
- 18:12Speaker 1: is saying this is the best steeling Cup file ever.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I don't think five and six we we lived up
- 18:16Speaker 1: to the first four overall. For you, how entertaining was it? Oh?
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean for sure.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I mean he's for him to say that too, having
- 18:22Speaker 4: played in three of them was pretty that's a pretty
- 18:24Speaker 4: bold statement. This was my fourteenth Stanley Cup Final covering it.
- 18:28Speaker 4: My first one was at Nesson back in twenty eleven,
- 18:30Speaker 4: and then of course the long run at NBC and
- 18:32Speaker 4: now back being at the NHL Network for the last
- 18:34Speaker 4: couple of years. So I've certainly seen a lot. I'd say,
- 18:38Speaker 4: I think it was just from a standpoint of like
- 18:40Speaker 4: the wild factor, the bizarre, the bananas, like use any
- 18:43Speaker 4: adjective you want. Those first four games, like none of
- 18:45Speaker 4: those games made sense. There were so many momentum swings
- 18:48Speaker 4: here you are you think a team with a three
- 18:49Speaker 4: to nothing and four nothing lead is going to go
- 18:51Speaker 4: on and win the game. We learned very quickly not
- 18:52Speaker 4: to assume that. So that was really interesting. And I
- 18:56Speaker 4: think from a fan perspective, like hockey's having a moment
- 18:58Speaker 4: right now. We all know that, just you know, the
- 19:00Speaker 4: momentum from go back to four Nations, go to the Olympics,
- 19:04Speaker 4: got all these new series that are coming out off campus.
- 19:07Speaker 3: He did rivalry. Say what you will about them, but
- 19:09Speaker 3: they are drawing fans to the game.
- 19:10Speaker 4: And so I think by having this Stanley Cup Final,
- 19:12Speaker 4: those first four games, it's like a casual fans dream
- 19:15Speaker 4: because they're thinking, oh, the eight goals scored a game
- 19:18Speaker 4: like this is great, you know.
- 19:19Speaker 3: So it's entertaining, and then I think it's settled.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Out after that we saw obviously the injuries took a
- 19:24Speaker 4: toll with Vegas and other factors combined and goaltending whatever.
- 19:27Speaker 4: But I'd say for me, it was very entertaining from
- 19:29Speaker 4: that regard, and I'm happy it was that way because
- 19:31Speaker 4: we're keeping those fans interested and engaged. I'd say some
- 19:35Speaker 4: of the championship runs I covered with Chicago and the
- 19:37Speaker 4: two runs with La like those were awesome series to cover,
- 19:41Speaker 4: and I love when you're watching a dynasty like that.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I mean the Chicago Blackhawks and their heyday.
- 19:45Speaker 4: It was like, you know, Duncan Keith's playing, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 4: sixty minutes of the game and Brent Seabrook and Corey
- 19:50Speaker 4: Crawford and all these stars and Cane and Taves and Sharpie,
- 19:54Speaker 4: and I just loved covering those series. So I think
- 19:57Speaker 4: that still stands out to me as one of my
- 19:59Speaker 4: favorite all time. But this one will go down as
- 20:01Speaker 4: one of the most memorable of all.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Time for sure.
- 20:03Speaker 2: You know, hockey's having a moment. And I wonder, as
- 20:07Speaker 2: somebody that you know didn't play hockey but you've been
- 20:10Speaker 2: around it for so long and you have such a
- 20:13Speaker 2: great perspective on the game and the players, can you
- 20:16Speaker 2: pinpoint what exactly it is? Is it just that fans
- 20:20Speaker 2: are ready and people are ready, and it's just the
- 20:22Speaker 2: kind of the perfect confluence of events.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Well, I think, you know, in the United States, obviously
- 20:28Speaker 4: we are oversaturated with sports and NFL and football takes
- 20:31Speaker 4: precedent over everything else. I think by having the Olympics
- 20:35Speaker 4: and having the United States win the Olympic gold medal.
- 20:39Speaker 4: That really that was a unifying moment for our country
- 20:42Speaker 4: and it was centered around the game of hockey. So
- 20:45Speaker 4: I think fans immediately became interested, like who's Jack Hughes,
- 20:49Speaker 4: Who are these players? Who's Brady Kuchuk, Who's Matthew Kuchuk,
- 20:51Speaker 4: And you know, I also give credit to the Kuchuk's
- 20:54Speaker 4: the last couple of years, like making themselves, you know,
- 20:56Speaker 4: media friendly, putting together a podcast like we see Travis
- 21:00Speaker 4: and Jason Kelse do highly entertaining. So when you're seeing
- 21:03Speaker 4: players getting more and we're out there, I think that's
- 21:06Speaker 4: helping to grow the game.
- 21:07Speaker 3: You know, for so long it was.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Like hockey players and I love you guys for it,
- 21:12Speaker 4: are just so humble and don't want to draw attention
- 21:15Speaker 4: to themselves and they don't want to, you know, have
- 21:17Speaker 4: brands and have identities with.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Other media elements. And you're seeing that shift.
- 21:23Speaker 4: I mean, every athlete now has sponsorship deals and podcasts
- 21:26Speaker 4: and all that cool stuff, and hockey players are now
- 21:28Speaker 4: buying into that one by one.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I still think it'd be fun to see a Sidney
- 21:31Speaker 4: Crosby or Conor McDavid.
- 21:32Speaker 3: The best part of the game do something like that.
- 21:35Speaker 4: But I think because they're getting more out there and
- 21:38Speaker 4: they're more visible, it's helping this moment that we have
- 21:41Speaker 4: and it's helping carry the momentum of the moment as well.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Leon dreisidele beer needs to happen. Hef of Iison. There's
- 21:47Speaker 2: something like that. But Katie, I just wanted to continue
- 21:50Speaker 2: with you know, you talk about this series and the
- 21:53Speaker 2: finals you've covered. You get to be on the ice,
- 21:56Speaker 2: you know when the cups hoisted, and I've got I've
- 21:58Speaker 2: had the honor of being able to do it the
- 22:00Speaker 2: last couple of years. You know what for you was
- 22:04Speaker 2: kind of your favorite moment of maybe that and in general,
- 22:07Speaker 2: but like what's your favorite moment from being down there?
- 22:10Speaker 2: Even though your your feet are freezing and your toes
- 22:12Speaker 2: are frozen, but like, just talk about the moment being
- 22:15Speaker 2: on the ice.
- 22:16Speaker 3: It took about a half hour and then I was like,
- 22:18Speaker 3: my toes are cold.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I had these little kitten heel I had the same cool.
- 22:22Speaker 4: I'm standing on ice. This is probably not a good idea.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I debated carrying my sneakers and putting them on for
- 22:27Speaker 4: the champion. I'm like, I'm not going to do that
- 22:28Speaker 4: that looks terrible. So anyway, I've gotten to I think
- 22:33Speaker 4: I started, like last year, really starting to take in
- 22:37Speaker 4: the moment a little bit more than I had earlier
- 22:39Speaker 4: in my career. I think it was just like go, go, go,
- 22:41Speaker 4: and you cover these big events and you're in such
- 22:43Speaker 4: game mode. But I've really started to stand there and
- 22:46Speaker 4: kind of process what I'm doing right before interviews or
- 22:49Speaker 4: whatever it is.
- 22:49Speaker 3: So I did that.
- 22:50Speaker 4: On Monday night or Sunday night, and I think I
- 22:53Speaker 4: just you know, looking at Jordan Stahl and just the
- 22:57Speaker 4: years and years it took to get back to the
- 22:59Speaker 4: Stanley Cup Final and to win it, and looking at
- 23:02Speaker 4: you know, Rod Brinda Moore and knowing that I'm gonna
- 23:05Speaker 4: have an opportunity to talk to these players and coaches
- 23:07Speaker 4: and everybody and share this moment with them. And then
- 23:10Speaker 4: it was cool because you and Schneids were down at
- 23:12Speaker 4: one end of the ice and I was with Patty
- 23:13Speaker 4: Maroon And here I am standing next to Patty thinking
- 23:16Speaker 4: how does he feel right now? Like this has gout
- 23:18Speaker 4: probably like very conflicting for him. Right he's super excited
- 23:21Speaker 4: he's in a new role in television, but he's been
- 23:23Speaker 4: on that ice winning it three different times, and now
- 23:26Speaker 4: he's got to interview guys about how it feels.
- 23:28Speaker 3: It's like he knows how it feels.
- 23:30Speaker 4: So all those things I was thinking of at once,
- 23:32Speaker 4: But we are so lucky to be on that ice,
- 23:35Speaker 4: you know, along with family members.
- 23:37Speaker 3: That's it.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Covering what I believe is the greatest trophy in all sports,
- 23:41Speaker 4: and watching the emotion and the sheer, like it's almost
- 23:44Speaker 4: like a relief for them when they hoist that cup.
- 23:46Speaker 4: You can like see it in their face and with
- 23:49Speaker 4: the way they exhale and the way they it's just
- 23:52Speaker 4: like a burst of like finally, you know, like since
- 23:55Speaker 4: they were little kids, they dreamed of this and you
- 23:57Speaker 4: see that. So it's just all encompassing. I think, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 4: we're so lucky that we get to talk to these athletes.
- 24:03Speaker 4: They're so raw moment, right. It's a lot Like people
- 24:06Speaker 4: ask me a lot about the Jack Hughes interview, and
- 24:07Speaker 4: I'm like, he was right off the ice, like literally
- 24:11Speaker 4: a minute and a half after scoring that goal, So
- 24:12Speaker 4: you don't know what you're going to get. And it's
- 24:13Speaker 4: the same thing with these guys. They are minutes removed
- 24:16Speaker 4: from the final whistle of the Stanley Cup Final and
- 24:19Speaker 4: they won the championship. It's like, how cool is that
- 24:21Speaker 4: that we get to talk to them that quickly and
- 24:23Speaker 4: you'll get their pure emotion in that moment.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned the moment when they get the
- 24:27Speaker 1: cop It's my favorite commercial kt the Community few years ago.
- 24:30Speaker 1: It's called No Words and you see like Tammy Solana
- 24:32Speaker 1: getting choked up and Glenn Wesley's at the potym you
- 24:34Speaker 1: can't speak. I'm like that, that's it's so perfect and
- 24:36Speaker 1: a hockey player gets that moment literally they're so speechless.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned the Jack Hughes moment. You know,
- 24:40Speaker 1: you're a pros pro, so you know when it comes
- 24:42Speaker 1: to questions, open, lean, neutral, right, who? What?
- 24:45Speaker 2: When?
- 24:45Speaker 1: Why? How? Keep it short, get them going, keep it neutral?
- 24:48Speaker 1: But what thoughts are going through your head as you
- 24:50Speaker 1: see this moment and realize the exultation the bedlom et cetera.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And what do you think in terms of what questions
- 24:55Speaker 1: do I ask Jack Hughes? How do I keep this
- 24:57Speaker 1: license straightforward?
- 24:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:58Speaker 4: I mean I think you know, you go into an interview,
- 25:01Speaker 4: you kind of have your you know, your first question,
- 25:03Speaker 4: and you really want to nail it and get it right.
- 25:05Speaker 4: You don't want to trip up, you don't want to choke,
- 25:07Speaker 4: you know, misspeak, and then you have to listen. As
- 25:11Speaker 4: you know, Adnan, I mean, it's that's the greatest art
- 25:14Speaker 4: of interviewing is and I think, you know, I'm a
- 25:16Speaker 4: student of Howard Stern and Oprah Winfree like, I think
- 25:19Speaker 4: they are some of the best to do it. And
- 25:21Speaker 4: to your point, it's the who, what, where, when, why,
- 25:24Speaker 4: and how like you have to ask a question. You
- 25:26Speaker 4: can't give a statement because they could very easily take
- 25:29Speaker 4: it anyway they want. They could very easily give you
- 25:30Speaker 4: one word answers. Now, Jack, I mean, I had no idea.
- 25:34Speaker 4: You know, we're standing on the ice. It's overtime, so
- 25:36Speaker 4: I know, as the network, we're going to get a
- 25:39Speaker 4: Canadian player or an American player, and we're getting the
- 25:41Speaker 4: game the game winner. So I don't know who it's
- 25:44Speaker 4: going to be. And all of a sudden, Jack scores one.
- 25:47Speaker 4: I was as a fan, like I never care who
- 25:50Speaker 4: wins or loses. I'm like, strictly, I mean, I care,
- 25:52Speaker 4: but like not, it doesn't matter to me that I
- 25:54Speaker 4: got no skin in the game. I had skin in
- 25:55Speaker 4: the game as an American and obviously, like I was
- 25:57Speaker 4: very excited, so I was super pumped. It was it
- 25:59Speaker 4: was the United States winning and then all of a sudden,
- 26:01Speaker 4: I'm like, oh my god, Jack scored. Okay, get ready
- 26:03Speaker 4: for Jack. So you know, the first question was what
- 26:06Speaker 4: it was? And then he went the way he wanted
- 26:09Speaker 4: to go. He was pure emotion. It was passion for
- 26:11Speaker 4: the United States. It was had you asked him like
- 26:15Speaker 4: probably a minute or five minutes later, like did you
- 26:17Speaker 4: do an interview after the game, he probably wouldn't have remembered.
- 26:18Speaker 4: I mean, I think he was like blackout exuberant, like
- 26:21Speaker 4: so excited, and he was so passionate, and I wanted
- 26:25Speaker 4: to make sure that you know, the first question was
- 26:27Speaker 4: what it was, Like, what a moment?
- 26:28Speaker 3: Right scored the goal?
- 26:29Speaker 4: You're bringing the gold medal back to the United States
- 26:31Speaker 4: for the first time in a long time. And the
- 26:33Speaker 4: second question it was I really wanted to I really
- 26:35Speaker 4: wanted to dive on USA hockey right like this, what
- 26:38Speaker 4: does this moment mean to the game?
- 26:41Speaker 3: And then ultimately, you know, the ending.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Was I got him right before he was going to
- 26:45Speaker 4: go back on the ice with his teammates to hear
- 26:47Speaker 4: the national anthem and to get that gold medal.
- 26:49Speaker 3: So you know, time hasn't passed yet. This is literally fresh.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Off of scoring the game winning goal to win the
- 26:54Speaker 4: gold medal, and so I knew I wanted to ask
- 26:57Speaker 4: him about the emotions of seeing the flag being raised
- 27:00Speaker 4: to the rafters and knowing that you won this championship
- 27:02Speaker 4: you're going to bring back home to the United States.
- 27:03Speaker 4: I mean, I get choked up thinking about it because
- 27:05Speaker 4: I just think the Olympics bring that out no matter
- 27:07Speaker 4: what country you're cheering for, when when you see them
- 27:10Speaker 4: on the podium and the national anthem sings or plays,
- 27:14Speaker 4: it's it's a moment, you know, for the fans, for
- 27:16Speaker 4: those athletes that compete.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Then I'm talking to every sport.
- 27:19Speaker 4: You know, they spend their whole lifetime trying to win
- 27:22Speaker 4: a medal and bring it back for their country. So
- 27:25Speaker 4: that was great, and I wanted to end on that,
- 27:26Speaker 4: So I knew that was where I wanted to end,
- 27:27Speaker 4: But the middle part was kind of like, you know,
- 27:30Speaker 4: and then I have to acknowledge like he's I can't
- 27:32Speaker 4: just ignore the fact that he's bleeding all over and
- 27:34Speaker 4: he's got I'm like, if anybody is looking at this
- 27:37Speaker 4: interview and it's like, oh, Catherine never even asked him
- 27:39Speaker 4: about the fact that he's got no teeth right now,
- 27:41Speaker 4: and that happened during the game.
- 27:43Speaker 3: So yeah, you process a lot, but I.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Think you know, as you know, it's preparation, it's it's
- 27:49Speaker 4: being composed, it's I've been in many situations before, We've
- 27:51Speaker 4: had to do some crazy interviews, and I just didn't
- 27:54Speaker 4: expect that one to go viral.
- 27:55Speaker 3: I had no idea in that moment. I had no idea.
- 27:57Speaker 4: I didn't know until probably about forty minutes after the game,
- 28:00Speaker 4: and I'm like, oh.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Well, almost went viral as well if you would have
- 28:07Speaker 2: kind of leaned into the Tate McCrae side of things,
- 28:09Speaker 2: because I know you had a couple of feelings of
- 28:10Speaker 2: the way he dressed around Tate McCrae, which is some
- 28:13Speaker 2: of the funniest We're sitting on NHL Network and they
- 28:16Speaker 2: show a video or we show a post of Tate
- 28:19Speaker 2: McCray and Jack Hughes and Kat's there, dress dress the
- 28:22Speaker 2: right way, dressed nice, Look, you got a white.
- 28:25Speaker 3: T shirt on it. What are you doing You're on
- 28:27Speaker 3: a date with a lovely woman like dress up?
- 28:29Speaker 4: I know I kind of buried him a little bit,
- 28:31Speaker 4: so I'm gratefully he did give me the interview after
- 28:33Speaker 4: I told him, and he's his dressed better on dates.
- 28:35Speaker 3: But what do I know? I mean, these kids these days, right.
- 28:38Speaker 2: They're wild listen going into the I don't know if
- 28:43Speaker 2: team the team Canada team USA. That rivalry was kind
- 28:46Speaker 2: of one of the better storylines for you. But what
- 28:49Speaker 2: was your favorite moment or storyline from the season?
- 28:53Speaker 3: Ooh, from the season, what's that?
- 28:56Speaker 1: I see the Buffalo Sabers making the plan drop the Sabers.
- 29:00Speaker 3: I So I look at.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Some of the athletes, like I look at the fact
- 29:04Speaker 4: that Sidney Crosby is still producing at the rate that
- 29:06Speaker 4: he is a point per game player. I look at
- 29:09Speaker 4: I think one of the biggest storylines for me is
- 29:11Speaker 4: like is OVI coming back?
- 29:13Speaker 1: Right?
- 29:13Speaker 4: Like, you know, every game you watched with Ov and
- 29:15Speaker 4: every moment he has, I'm like, is this it?
- 29:16Speaker 3: Is this the end? Like? Is he going to be
- 29:18Speaker 3: back next season?
- 29:18Speaker 4: So I'm thinking more player driven versus you know, team driven.
- 29:23Speaker 4: I think for the season, and again, it's the older guys,
- 29:26Speaker 4: it's Sidney Crosby producing, It's andj Copepatar's farewell tour. You know,
- 29:30Speaker 4: it's Jonathan Quick retiring. Like all these guys that I
- 29:33Speaker 4: basically like started my career covering and now they're retiring,
- 29:36Speaker 4: and it's like, oh my gosh, Like I've seen their
- 29:38Speaker 4: entire career.
- 29:39Speaker 3: From start to finish.
- 29:40Speaker 2: So that's wild.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:42Speaker 4: I mean even listen Patrice bergermom when he retired was
- 29:44Speaker 4: it last year or two years ago? He I covered
- 29:47Speaker 4: him when he was playing for the p Bruins during
- 29:48Speaker 4: the NHL lockout year in two thousand and five, two
- 29:50Speaker 4: thousand and six, So he was a rookie and they
- 29:52Speaker 4: sent him down to play in the miners because they
- 29:54Speaker 4: wanted him to get you know, reps and stuff.
- 29:56Speaker 3: And I was like, when he retired.
- 29:57Speaker 4: I thought to myself, Okay, I think this is the
- 30:00Speaker 4: first athlete that I have literally seen from start to finish.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Providence working at Nesson for five years, NHL Network, NBC
- 30:07Speaker 4: is like, I can't believe it.
- 30:09Speaker 3: So I just keep on going.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Guys just love it.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Jeffy, it is crazy. It is crazy though, when you
- 30:15Speaker 2: think about it. I'm sure Adnan you've seen that as well,
- 30:17Speaker 2: because you guys have had long, storied careers, like as
- 30:20Speaker 2: me as a player, I'm more look at it as
- 30:23Speaker 2: like guys that I played with and I retired before
- 30:27Speaker 2: him are now retiring.
- 30:28Speaker 4: You know.
- 30:28Speaker 2: The Brent Burns is in the patrise burgroom's like I started.
- 30:30Speaker 2: They were a couple of years in, two three years in.
- 30:33Speaker 2: So it's always weird when you see that. You're like,
- 30:35Speaker 2: oh god, yeah, time flies.
- 30:38Speaker 3: We're rupper with.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Like Jackson Blake, He's like, oh he was in the
- 30:41Speaker 4: locker room as a kid when we were playing.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my gosh, that's so funny.
- 30:44Speaker 4: And then Jason's on the ice, you know obviously with
- 30:46Speaker 4: the celebration of the Cup on Sunday. So yeah, it's
- 30:49Speaker 4: it's interesting, you know when things come full circle. You're like, yeah,
- 30:52Speaker 4: but I'm not getting any older.
- 30:53Speaker 1: So how this happened?
- 30:55Speaker 3: How do you all fly past me? I'm I'm staying
- 30:57Speaker 3: the same.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Yeah, It's like Benjamin Button, you keep going, keep looking younger,
- 31:00Speaker 1: they get older. My eldest son, Catherine's graduate high school
- 31:03Speaker 1: next week. He's going to will In Patterson University. But
- 31:05Speaker 1: he's still the wait list for the school you went to,
- 31:07Speaker 1: which is Rutgers. That's what we want. Let's say Rutgers
- 31:09Speaker 1: Business School. Grades weren't quite good enough. But wow. Also,
- 31:12Speaker 1: he also ran track at Northern Islands here, and you
- 31:14Speaker 1: ran track at Rutgers. So I feel like he's, uh,
- 31:17Speaker 1: he's trying to emulate you. What's the best you have
- 31:19Speaker 1: for running steeple chase?
- 31:21Speaker 3: I love it? I love it. Well, let's talk offline,
- 31:24Speaker 3: ad maybe we can.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Move them up on that way. Oh yeah, big deal.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Well the business school they'll be like, yeah, Katherine, you
- 31:32Speaker 4: were not in the business school, so you have nothing
- 31:34Speaker 4: to do with that.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Well, it takes you to admission. He can weasel in
- 31:36Speaker 1: the Business School year three.
- 31:37Speaker 3: I love it. I love it.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Yeah. My favorite track story was that the question please,
- 31:42Speaker 4: Oh my god. I mean, there's so many, but I
- 31:44Speaker 4: think when I so, I was a distance runner in
- 31:46Speaker 4: high school and when I moved, when I went to Rutgers,
- 31:49Speaker 4: I was kind of middle distance eight hundred. I did
- 31:51Speaker 4: the foreigner meter hurdles, the mile, the three k, and
- 31:53Speaker 4: then cross country. And so when I got to Rutgers,
- 31:55Speaker 4: and this typically happens with runners that are middle distance,
- 31:57Speaker 4: they immediately.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Bump you up to the distance.
- 31:59Speaker 4: So they had just introduced the three thousand meters steeple
- 32:02Speaker 4: chase for women in legiate athletics.
- 32:05Speaker 3: So yeah, my coach.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Was like, well you do you know, you do hurdles
- 32:09Speaker 4: and you run long distance, and this will be a
- 32:11Speaker 4: great event for you.
- 32:12Speaker 3: And I'm like, what is it again? Wait?
- 32:14Speaker 4: Thirty five hurdles over the course of you know, seven
- 32:17Speaker 4: laps and there's.
- 32:18Speaker 3: A water pit every time. I'm like, what in God's
- 32:20Speaker 3: name is this?
- 32:21Speaker 4: So I just remember that was like the hardest race
- 32:24Speaker 4: ever and without fail, most women do not clear the pit.
- 32:28Speaker 4: You have to kind of step on the big block
- 32:30Speaker 4: and jump off, so your feet get wet the first lap,
- 32:32Speaker 4: so you're running with like wet, soggy socks and feet
- 32:35Speaker 4: for the rest of the thirty two hundred. I mean,
- 32:37Speaker 4: it's just insane, but it was. It was a great event.
- 32:41Speaker 4: It was there was a lot of camaraderie around it.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Pen relays, I remember everyone kind of standing around the
- 32:44Speaker 4: water pit and they just want to see you fall,
- 32:46Speaker 4: which is.
- 32:46Speaker 3: So mean, but I'm like, whatever, you know what, I'm
- 32:49Speaker 3: not gonna fall.
- 32:49Speaker 4: I'm just gonna get my feet wet, and you can
- 32:51Speaker 4: laugh at somebody else that's going to fall behind me.
- 32:53Speaker 4: But you know, the friendships I built at Rutgers as
- 32:56Speaker 4: an athlete, and I just encourage. You know, I had
- 32:58Speaker 4: a cousin who was going to play Division three and
- 33:00Speaker 4: I was she was debating between playing or not, and
- 33:02Speaker 4: I was like, just do it. Like you make immediate friends,
- 33:05Speaker 4: you have an immediate network of people around you. To
- 33:08Speaker 4: this day, I'm on a group text with my college
- 33:10Speaker 4: teammates and also my college roommates. I lived with women's
- 33:12Speaker 4: acrosse players, and those are the best friendships I have
- 33:15Speaker 4: from and especially at a big university like Rutgers, you know,
- 33:18Speaker 4: over forty thousand students on campus. How do you find
- 33:21Speaker 4: your way? How do you make new friends? You know,
- 33:23Speaker 4: being an athlete certainly helped. So I think just the
- 33:25Speaker 4: stories of like, you know, the parties we'd go to
- 33:28Speaker 4: as teammates, and you know, Saturday night was the night
- 33:30Speaker 4: to go out, and you know, I think it was
- 33:33Speaker 4: like forty five cent slices of pizza at midnight and
- 33:35Speaker 4: the butt Like I mean, these things don't even exist anymore.
- 33:37Speaker 3: But it was so much fun and a really great
- 33:40Speaker 3: experience going to school there.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Did you know, at what point did that experience kind
- 33:46Speaker 2: of lend you into going into broadcasting? Like what was
- 33:49Speaker 2: it for you? Was it always something you wanted to
- 33:51Speaker 2: do or was it you know, was it something competing
- 33:54Speaker 2: that led to that?
- 33:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 33:56Speaker 4: I mean, ever since I was a little girl, I
- 33:58Speaker 4: wanted to be a sports broadcaster. I should have had
- 34:00Speaker 4: it next to me, But I've got my eighth grade yearbook.
- 34:02Speaker 4: I went to a small elementary school and you each
- 34:03Speaker 4: got your own page, and my yearbook page said aspiration
- 34:06Speaker 4: to be a broadcaster. I did forensics, which is a
- 34:10Speaker 4: public speaking competition ever since I was in elementary school.
- 34:13Speaker 4: I did it through high school, and I ultimately competed
- 34:15Speaker 4: in Spanish too, because I had, you know, loved public
- 34:18Speaker 4: speaking so much and I learned to do it in Spanish.
- 34:20Speaker 3: But Danyell too, Yeah, I know it's kind of I
- 34:24Speaker 3: don't have that good of a knowledge of Spanish anymore.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I need to practice it more.
- 34:28Speaker 4: But so I loved public speaking, and I loved sports. Obviously,
- 34:33Speaker 4: I was obsessed with Katie Curic. I just loved, you know,
- 34:36Speaker 4: presenting and delivering the news. So I knew coming out
- 34:40Speaker 4: of high school that I wanted to be in a
- 34:42Speaker 4: journalism school. So I looked at schools that had that
- 34:44Speaker 4: kind of a program, and at the time I was
- 34:47Speaker 4: being recruited by a lot of Division three schools. It
- 34:49Speaker 4: wasn't until later in my senior year that division one
- 34:51Speaker 4: schools started. My times were really good and they started
- 34:54Speaker 4: to get better, and so I started to get some
- 34:55Speaker 4: looks from Division one schools like Georgetown and Boston College
- 34:58Speaker 4: and Rutgers. And Rutgers had a great journalism school, and
- 35:02Speaker 4: I was like, oh, I can compete. I can go
- 35:04Speaker 4: right down the road. It was thirty five forty minutes
- 35:06Speaker 4: from my house. My parents can come to all my events.
- 35:09Speaker 4: It was kind of a win win, and then I
- 35:10Speaker 4: could join be a part of the journalism school and
- 35:12Speaker 4: apply to that I think was sophomore year.
- 35:15Speaker 3: So knowing what I wanted.
- 35:17Speaker 4: To do certainly helped, and I got in the right
- 35:18Speaker 4: program at Rutgers, and I did a minor in political
- 35:21Speaker 4: science and then you know, you graduate and then it's like, now,
- 35:23Speaker 4: what I mean, getting into TV is not easy. So
- 35:27Speaker 4: sent my resume out everywhere and ultimately landed my first
- 35:30Speaker 4: TV job in local news and Providence, Rhode Island, which
- 35:33Speaker 4: was great because it's a feeder market to Boston, which,
- 35:35Speaker 4: as we know, is one of the biggest sports markets
- 35:37Speaker 4: in the country. So it worked out really well, But
- 35:40Speaker 4: I did know, and I think it was you know,
- 35:42Speaker 4: JD just yeah, my love of sports. I wanted to
- 35:46Speaker 4: always be around it, and I thought, you know, it's
- 35:48Speaker 4: been a part of my life since I was a
- 35:49Speaker 4: little girl. I wanted to be a part of my
- 35:51Speaker 4: life and my career somehow.
- 35:53Speaker 3: So this was the best way to do it. And
- 35:55Speaker 3: so far, so good.
- 35:57Speaker 1: It's pretty good, so great, I was gonna say, and
- 35:58Speaker 1: you've never stopped learning, Katie, I don't know how I
- 36:00Speaker 1: balanced the personal professional and just got your master's degree
- 36:03Speaker 1: from NYU.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Yeah, why, I know why. I don't know. I'm a
- 36:06Speaker 3: glutton for punishment, I think.
- 36:09Speaker 4: No, I you know, I'm this is my twenty third
- 36:11Speaker 4: year broadcasting, and I just started to as you know,
- 36:13Speaker 4: the business is always changing, and I just think you
- 36:15Speaker 4: always have to be on your toes and in life
- 36:17Speaker 4: in general, I think you just have to be prepared
- 36:19Speaker 4: and position yourself for opportunities.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Right, they don't just fall in your lap.
- 36:23Speaker 4: You've got to be willing and able to do the
- 36:25Speaker 4: hard work to be able to open up.
- 36:27Speaker 3: The doors elsewhere. And you don't know when those doors
- 36:30Speaker 3: are going to open.
- 36:31Speaker 4: So a friend of mine told me about this program
- 36:33Speaker 4: at NYU about a year and a half ago, and
- 36:36Speaker 4: it's a global sport business program designed to really kind
- 36:40Speaker 4: of broaden your perspective on sports as a whole in
- 36:43Speaker 4: many different nations around the world. And as we see,
- 36:46Speaker 4: I mean, the NFL is playing games overseas in Australia
- 36:48Speaker 4: and in Brazil and in Europe, and the NHL's.
- 36:51Speaker 3: Taking their game overseas, the NBA, the WNBA.
- 36:54Speaker 4: So it's like, I think my brain was like, well,
- 36:57Speaker 4: why what is out there that I need to know
- 36:59Speaker 4: more of that I can apply it here and maybe
- 37:01Speaker 4: grow things here. So I just started to think, like,
- 37:04Speaker 4: next twenty years of my career, if and when television
- 37:06Speaker 4: ever winds down, maybe there's an opportunity to do something
- 37:09Speaker 4: else in a front office role or in the league role.
- 37:13Speaker 4: And if and when that door opened, I wanted to
- 37:15Speaker 4: be prepared to receive it. And I figured the one
- 37:18Speaker 4: area I was lacking in was kind of the business
- 37:19Speaker 4: acumen of.
- 37:20Speaker 3: A global world sports world.
- 37:23Speaker 4: And so you know, one of the I mean, the
- 37:25Speaker 4: course was amazing, it was it was hard as heck,
- 37:28Speaker 4: and I'm still actually finishing up my thesis now, which
- 37:30Speaker 4: we will present in London in August.
- 37:33Speaker 3: So it took us all around the world.
- 37:34Speaker 4: I got some great experiences, spent some time in Abu Dhabi,
- 37:37Speaker 4: which was awesome, but so many of the courses were
- 37:41Speaker 4: centered around, you know, FIFA and the Olympics, and like,
- 37:44Speaker 4: here we are and I'm watching FIFA games thinking about
- 37:46Speaker 4: everything I learned from a business sense, and like I'm
- 37:48Speaker 4: trying to pick up certain things in the coverage and
- 37:50Speaker 4: reading the Sports Business journal. So very informative. Again, really
- 37:55Speaker 4: challenging from balancing like that with my broadcasting schedule, so
- 38:00Speaker 4: I don't again out of what I was thinking an
- 38:03Speaker 4: Olympic year, I'm like, why did I do this this year.
- 38:05Speaker 2: On an Olympic here too could be busy Off.
- 38:08Speaker 4: It was a one year really a two year program
- 38:10Speaker 4: condensed into one year. So it's almost almost to the
- 38:12Speaker 4: finished line. Officially, I did graduate. We walked with our class.
- 38:15Speaker 4: We just have our capstone project that we have to finish,
- 38:17Speaker 4: which I'll get done.
- 38:18Speaker 2: So nice. You get Nige a little bit of time.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Now Now I have time, I don't have to do
- 38:23Speaker 3: my real job. I can focus on school work.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, I want to ask you just you know,
- 38:28Speaker 2: funny stories being at NBC Sports. I Mike Millberry. You
- 38:31Speaker 2: gotta have a favorite story, Mike Milberry. So the floor
- 38:35Speaker 2: is yours?
- 38:36Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, Mike, God, where do I start?
- 38:39Speaker 4: Mike was just you know, Mike was a huge advocate
- 38:41Speaker 4: in getting me to MBC. We worked together at Nissen
- 38:44Speaker 4: and then when NBC got the rights back for the NHL.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Actually he went there when when it was on versus
- 38:49Speaker 4: and I remember early on he was like, would you
- 38:51Speaker 4: ever want to go work at NBC?
- 38:52Speaker 3: I was like, oh.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Yeah, And you know, he was very big on He
- 38:56Speaker 4: kept telling our executive producer Sam Flood over and over again,
- 39:00Speaker 4: like you got to get this girl up in Boston.
- 39:02Speaker 3: You got to get her and she's really good.
- 39:03Speaker 4: And ultimately, I think with Mike helping to push that along,
- 39:07Speaker 4: they gave me a look and ultimately offered me a
- 39:09Speaker 4: contract for to do various sports back in twenty fourteen.
- 39:11Speaker 4: But so I've always been like, Mike is just one
- 39:14Speaker 4: of my favorite people.
- 39:15Speaker 3: I love him. I give a lot in my career
- 39:18Speaker 3: to him.
- 39:19Speaker 4: I also learned a lot from him because when you're
- 39:21Speaker 4: on the air with Mike Milbury, you don't know what's
- 39:22Speaker 4: coming out of his mouth.
- 39:23Speaker 3: So I learned to be more on my toes.
- 39:26Speaker 4: I learned to be more instinctive with my questioning and
- 39:28Speaker 4: my understanding of the game of hockey versus like trying
- 39:31Speaker 4: to just you know, get from point A to point
- 39:33Speaker 4: B and lead the analysts where they need to go.
- 39:35Speaker 4: I really understood, like, no, you got to embrace this
- 39:38Speaker 4: personality that you have next to you. And oh, by
- 39:40Speaker 4: the way, Keith Jones is standing to his left and
- 39:42Speaker 4: he's got a different personality that's equally as big, but
- 39:46Speaker 4: very intuitive and very different. So juggling those personalities and
- 39:50Speaker 4: Mike in particular, was something that I had to learn
- 39:52Speaker 4: how to do, and I think, you know, made me
- 39:55Speaker 4: better at my job because now, you know, put anybody
- 39:57Speaker 4: next to the set with me unprepared and I can
- 39:58Speaker 4: fire back and I'm confident to like, you know, they
- 40:01Speaker 4: give a little bit, get a little bit that kind
- 40:02Speaker 4: of thing, especially with you guys JD.
- 40:03Speaker 3: I mean, we have much fun on NHL.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Now, but yeah, it's pretty random show.
- 40:07Speaker 4: One of my favorite Mike stories was when I was
- 40:09Speaker 4: working at Nissen and we were doing the postgame show
- 40:12Speaker 4: and we got through the first segment and Mike did
- 40:15Speaker 4: not agree with what the producer wanted him to do
- 40:17Speaker 4: and wanted him to discuss regarding a talking point.
- 40:20Speaker 3: It was after a Bruins game.
- 40:21Speaker 4: We usually broadcast from the studio suite in TD Garden,
- 40:24Speaker 4: which is an awesome perspective. So it was like, We're
- 40:27Speaker 4: in the first segment and I can hear the producer
- 40:29Speaker 4: telling Mike something, and I can see Mike like the
- 40:31Speaker 4: fire is just.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Going and I'm like, uh oh uh oh uh oh.
- 40:33Speaker 4: And so in the commercial break, he rips off his
- 40:35Speaker 4: headset and he just walks out the suite and I'm
- 40:38Speaker 4: there by myself. It was just Mike and I on
- 40:39Speaker 4: the pre postgame show and the producers in my ear
- 40:42Speaker 4: going Catherine Catherin, he didn't just leave, Diddy. I'm like, yeah,
- 40:45Speaker 4: he just left. Well, you gotta go get him. I'm like, no, no,
- 40:46Speaker 4: he's not coming back. We need to like figure out
- 40:48Speaker 4: the show moving forward.
- 40:49Speaker 3: They're like, you gotta go get him.
- 40:51Speaker 4: You got to go, Like, guys, I he's gone, Like
- 40:53Speaker 4: he's halfway to his house right now. At this point,
- 40:55Speaker 4: I'm like, we're not getting him back. We need to
- 40:57Speaker 4: focus on how we're going to handle the next twenty
- 40:59Speaker 4: five minutes. The remainder of the show without an analyst,
- 41:01Speaker 4: so like, let's get like. I almost was like, guy,
- 41:04Speaker 4: he's not coming back. So sure enough, we finished the show.
- 41:07Speaker 4: We did mostly highlights, kept me off camera for a
- 41:09Speaker 4: lot of it, just to try and get me through.
- 41:10Speaker 4: We went to some player interviews and whatever. So I
- 41:13Speaker 4: leave that night and everyone's like, what the heck happened.
- 41:15Speaker 4: I'm like, well, you made him mad, Like he does
- 41:18Speaker 4: not care and he's going to leave the set. So
- 41:20Speaker 4: the next day, I get a miscall from Mike.
- 41:23Speaker 3: I don't remember where I was. He left me a voicemail.
- 41:25Speaker 4: I was like, Catherine, it's Mike Milbury. I was told
- 41:28Speaker 4: to call to apologize to you. So I'm calling to apologize. Okay,
- 41:33Speaker 4: that's all, goodbye, And on the phone, I think Nesson
- 41:37Speaker 4: suspended him for like two games, which was like a
- 41:39Speaker 4: vacation for Mike.
- 41:40Speaker 3: But I mean, that's just classic Mike. He was like, I.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Don't really want to apologize and I really have no
- 41:44Speaker 4: reason to apologize, but they told me too, so here
- 41:46Speaker 4: you go.
- 41:47Speaker 3: And I was like whatever, I mean, I it is
- 41:49Speaker 3: what it is.
- 41:50Speaker 4: He's a huge personality and he was honest to god,
- 41:53Speaker 4: like the best to work with. And when you didn't
- 41:55Speaker 4: see what he could he did on the sides, you know,
- 41:58Speaker 4: when he wasn't on camera, and the way he would
- 42:00Speaker 4: help people, and the way he would go out of
- 42:01Speaker 4: his way to make people feel special. And you know,
- 42:04Speaker 4: as much as his personality on camera was one way,
- 42:07Speaker 4: Mike would stop traffic to help an old lady across
- 42:10Speaker 4: the street, Like that's just who he is, and always
- 42:12Speaker 4: willing to help other people first and foremost before himself.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say the most important thing an analyst
- 42:17Speaker 1: has to have, Catherine, as you know, as an opinion
- 42:19Speaker 1: at the very least, Mike Melbury has no shortage of opinions.
- 42:22Speaker 1: He will let you know what he thinks about any
- 42:24Speaker 1: topic that it might be out there. You mentioned Sam Flood,
- 42:27Speaker 1: I mean obviously a great crew that at NBC, Mike
- 42:29Speaker 1: Tarico at least noonon. I mean, there's so many great
- 42:30Speaker 1: people behind the scenes in front of the scenes. I've
- 42:32Speaker 1: always loved watching Notre Dame football. I still have yet
- 42:35Speaker 1: to get to a game there, but obviously I love
- 42:36Speaker 1: college football like everybody.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Else'll get you there, I know you haven't even I've
- 42:40Speaker 2: been there, and I'm Canadian.
- 42:41Speaker 1: I know, how would you explain that experience that some
- 42:44Speaker 1: of you who hasn't.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Been, Yeah, I mean so I that was my assignment
- 42:48Speaker 4: with the only college football package we had on NBC
- 42:50Speaker 4: up until the last four years with the Big Ten
- 42:52Speaker 4: package was Notre Dame Football. So we have the seven
- 42:55Speaker 4: home games, and I was the sideline reporter for you know,
- 42:58Speaker 4: up until we got our Big ten package. And I
- 43:00Speaker 4: still have the opportunity to do the four primetime games
- 43:02Speaker 4: or the three to four primetime games a year at
- 43:04Speaker 4: Notre Dame, which is awesome. I think I've done like
- 43:06Speaker 4: sixty four games at Notre Dame Stadium. So you got
- 43:09Speaker 4: a little catching up to do, Adnan.
- 43:10Speaker 3: But we'll get to We need to get you to one.
- 43:12Speaker 1: We need to get one.
- 43:14Speaker 4: But what I love about Notre Dame and Mike Tirico
- 43:17Speaker 4: for the few years that he was on the broadcast
- 43:18Speaker 4: with us doing play by play before he moved on
- 43:21Speaker 4: to Sunday Night Football, he told me, he's like, Catherine,
- 43:23Speaker 4: you always spoke so highly about this place. I had
- 43:26Speaker 4: no idea, But this is a very special package that
- 43:28Speaker 4: we have at NBC. And the thing is there's a
- 43:31Speaker 4: there's a very unique relationship between Notre Dame and NBC.
- 43:35Speaker 4: It's a very unique package, like there's no other there's
- 43:38Speaker 4: no other college football package like it in the country.
- 43:41Speaker 3: So we're the exclusive provider.
- 43:43Speaker 4: For those home games, and so you develop a good
- 43:45Speaker 4: relationship with the athletic director, with the coaching staff.
- 43:48Speaker 3: With the players, and it's just a beautiful place to go.
- 43:51Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's pristine, it's so you know, it's happy,
- 43:56Speaker 4: it's calm. It's in the middle, it's in the Midwest.
- 43:59Speaker 4: Like when you get there, you just like breathe a
- 44:01Speaker 4: sigh of relief. Fresh air, beautiful atmosphere, real quality people
- 44:05Speaker 4: on campus. You know, the students obviously are exceptional. It's
- 44:09Speaker 4: just one of the best institutions in the country. And
- 44:12Speaker 4: then you've got the Grotto and you've got the Basilica,
- 44:14Speaker 4: and you have these beautiful places of worship, and you know,
- 44:16Speaker 4: we took advantage of that.
- 44:17Speaker 3: I still do.
- 44:19Speaker 4: You know, at some point I always light a candle
- 44:21Speaker 4: or a few at the grotto, and I go to
- 44:23Speaker 4: Mass at the Basilica, and it's just it's a really
- 44:26Speaker 4: special place, so all encompassing. And it's funny because I
- 44:30Speaker 4: grew up in an area.
- 44:31Speaker 3: And in New Jersey.
- 44:32Speaker 4: It's a very Irish Catholic area, and everyone either went
- 44:35Speaker 4: to Notre Dame or wanted to go to Notre Dame.
- 44:37Speaker 3: So I've seen like the Notre Dame to the point
- 44:39Speaker 3: where I'm like, oh, because like one more Notre Dame thing.
- 44:41Speaker 4: So it wasn't until I got there and I started
- 44:44Speaker 4: really being a part of that culture back in twenty fourteen,
- 44:46Speaker 4: then I was like, oh, I get it. I get it,
- 44:48Speaker 4: Like this is really a special place, and the stadium
- 44:50Speaker 4: itself is I mean, it's one of the cathedrals of
- 44:52Speaker 4: college football.
- 44:53Speaker 3: It's real special.
- 44:54Speaker 1: It's funny you mentioned the Irish Catholic because that's what
- 44:55Speaker 1: my friend Sean mcdonnolway says to me, because people think
- 44:57Speaker 1: I'm program to Dame. I said, no, I didn't get
- 44:59Speaker 1: into Notre Dame. Should everybody watched it if you'd like,
- 45:02Speaker 1: didn't get in, so I should be up tight.
- 45:04Speaker 3: That's exactly it. Well, my sister is funny story.
- 45:07Speaker 4: My sister went to Boston College and BC and Notre
- 45:09Speaker 4: Dame for a long time had a rivalry in football.
- 45:11Speaker 4: And when I got the job at NBC in twenty fourteen,
- 45:14Speaker 4: it was, you know, do Sunday night football Football night
- 45:16Speaker 4: in America? Hit you're going to do the Olympics, You're
- 45:18Speaker 4: gonna do hockey, and we'd love to have.
- 45:20Speaker 3: You do Notre Dame football. And I was so excited
- 45:22Speaker 3: about the deal.
- 45:23Speaker 4: And I told my sister and she's like that all
- 45:24Speaker 4: sounds great, but just tell him you're not going to
- 45:26Speaker 4: do the Notre Dame football.
- 45:27Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, I'm not going to do that. She's like,
- 45:31Speaker 3: you can't do Notre Dame football. I went to BC.
- 45:32Speaker 4: I'm like, yeah, it's a big part of the package,
- 45:35Speaker 4: a big primetime game. Like yeah, no, we're doing it.
- 45:38Speaker 2: I gotta do it. Katie. My last one for you
- 45:42Speaker 2: is just you know, you're you're so ingrained in hockey
- 45:45Speaker 2: and I work with you all year that I don't
- 45:47Speaker 2: even realize you do everything else outside of it at times,
- 45:50Speaker 2: and I always pinch me. I'm like, geez, she's doing
- 45:52Speaker 2: football college football. Like, for you, broadcasting wise, what's a
- 45:57Speaker 2: non NHL moment that's one of your favorite that stands
- 46:00Speaker 2: out to you?
- 46:01Speaker 4: Oh gosh, it's crazy because I all my NHL moments
- 46:05Speaker 4: I love so much, like Winter Classics and Stanley Cup Finals,
- 46:08Speaker 4: But I.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Think you know, the primetime college football games.
- 46:12Speaker 4: That I have an opportunity to do and Notre Dame
- 46:14Speaker 4: would be included in that when you have this sense
- 46:17Speaker 4: of adrenaline right before kickoff and Notre Dame week sorry,
- 46:20Speaker 4: football weeks are a grind, Like we we are at
- 46:23Speaker 4: it from Monday morning. We're talking one game and we
- 46:25Speaker 4: put everything into it all week long. You really it's
- 46:29Speaker 4: over preparation and once once that kick goes off, it's like, okay,
- 46:33Speaker 4: focus on the game.
- 46:34Speaker 3: But there's a lot of work that goes into it.
- 46:36Speaker 3: There's a lot of pressure because they are primetime games.
- 46:39Speaker 4: There's a lot of money on the line, and there's
- 46:40Speaker 4: a lot of you know, especially now with college sports
- 46:42Speaker 4: being what they are, and so I think some of
- 46:45Speaker 4: my favorite moments occur, you know, when that national anthem
- 46:48Speaker 4: is sung and we're about ready to kick off and
- 46:51Speaker 4: I know, I've got to get the coach when he
- 46:52Speaker 4: runs onto the field and he's hyped, and you know,
- 46:54Speaker 4: it's like it's a really good feeling.
- 46:56Speaker 3: It's a feeling of adrenaline. You know, there's a lot
- 46:58Speaker 3: of people watching.
- 46:59Speaker 4: It's a Saturday night primetime game on NBC, and so
- 47:02Speaker 4: those are the moments that are really kind of pinched me.
- 47:04Speaker 4: Moments because I just think about back to your point, GD,
- 47:06Speaker 4: when I was a little girl wanting to be a sportscaster,
- 47:08Speaker 4: Like that's what I dreamed of, and now I live
- 47:11Speaker 4: it every weekend.
- 47:12Speaker 3: So those are some of my favorite moments.
- 47:15Speaker 4: And I mean the list goes on and on, but
- 47:16Speaker 4: I think also just the people you meet in the industry,
- 47:19Speaker 4: you know, the people you have an opportunity to to
- 47:22Speaker 4: spend time with and get to know, and the parents
- 47:24Speaker 4: of athletes and the siblings of athletes, and just the
- 47:27Speaker 4: storytelling alone. Like we get into this in the beginning
- 47:30Speaker 4: of the industry, in the beginning of you know, our
- 47:32Speaker 4: careers for storytelling. That's what it's all about, you know,
- 47:36Speaker 4: that's what we do every day. That's what we did
- 47:37Speaker 4: the whole Cup final. That's yeah, you're breaking down plays
- 47:40Speaker 4: and stuff. But at the end of the day, this
- 47:41Speaker 4: is entertainment.
- 47:42Speaker 3: You know.
- 47:42Speaker 4: People are tuning in because they want reprieve from a
- 47:45Speaker 4: lot of the other difficult things that are going on
- 47:47Speaker 4: in their lives or in the world, and so we
- 47:49Speaker 4: need to be storytellers and make sure we deliver that.
- 47:51Speaker 4: And that's that's one of the most exciting things that
- 47:54Speaker 4: I get to do on a daily basis.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Lucky to have Catherine tap and HL and Network, Lucky
- 47:58Speaker 1: to have an hl in scripted. This was awesome, Kate,
- 48:00Speaker 1: You've got stories for days. You're always your welcome presence
- 48:03Speaker 1: of that. Ever, I don't know how you balance everything,
- 48:04Speaker 1: but I'm gratefully you're able to do it. Thanks so all.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I will say, I'm bumm.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Tom Er wasn't on today because I got plenty of
- 48:09Speaker 4: stories of the time for a long time, just kidding,
- 48:12Speaker 4: I would never share them.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Luck thanks for having me, guys, this was fun.
- 48:26Speaker 1: No cinephon in sixties. I want everyone to watch Spider
- 48:28Speaker 1: Man Noir. Although j did you get a chance to
- 48:30Speaker 1: watch he Man? That is our next cinephile. You're gonna
- 48:33Speaker 1: take that one. Do you have a chance yet?
- 48:34Speaker 2: No, I have the I have not yet.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I got excited for a second.
- 48:42Speaker 2: So annoying. I just I'm trying to find a time
- 48:45Speaker 2: to go see it. I have no freaking time.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I know. Cut file ends and now JD's as busy
- 48:49Speaker 1: as ever. You were being kind and gentle earlier. This
- 48:51Speaker 1: is a bad trade for the leaves Joseph Fule and
- 48:54Speaker 1: Simone ben Wood Philly for Sam Yerson who stinks Emeil Andrew,
- 48:57Speaker 1: who's a six and a third rounder. Now I get it.
- 49:00Speaker 1: You'd roll Anthony Stillard's hild the Beast and octiumofse. You
- 49:04Speaker 1: have two goaltenders, but Jadi. You've seen Joseph fall like
- 49:07Speaker 1: at times, he can be a one A. Now I
- 49:08Speaker 1: know he gets hurt too much. I got it. I
- 49:10Speaker 1: know there's a mental health issues. Sure, but Sam Harrison's awful.
- 49:13Speaker 1: That guy like an eight to sixties eight percentage. Give
- 49:15Speaker 1: it clearly inferior goaltender. And Emil Andre is not exactly
- 49:19Speaker 1: Quinn Hughes.
- 49:19Speaker 2: That's the best ability is availability.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Right, So I guess best cause you could say for
- 49:25Speaker 1: the Leafs is Arson will play thirty games and he
- 49:28Speaker 1: won't be very good, whereas wol might get hurt and
- 49:30Speaker 1: unavailable for Philly. Maybe.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess exactly. And they got Dan Vlodars that
- 49:34Speaker 2: Arison was good down the stretch. He wasn't good early,
- 49:37Speaker 2: but he's good down the stretch. He's proving to be
- 49:38Speaker 2: a good backup again. Simon Benoit suh Simone ben Wit
- 49:45Speaker 2: love the guy, love his passion for the game. He's
- 49:48Speaker 2: not I'm sorry, okay. Emil Andre is an upgrade, believe
- 49:52Speaker 2: it or not, though he can move the pocket a
- 49:54Speaker 2: little bit better.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Okay, so a better goalie than Arison, but Andrea a
- 49:57Speaker 1: better defenseman than Bedwine.
- 49:58Speaker 2: So you're gonna I think Arison and Wall it's a
- 50:00Speaker 2: it's a tie, wow on tie.
- 50:03Speaker 4: I don't see that.
- 50:04Speaker 1: And by the way, still warts, they still think is
- 50:06Speaker 1: there one that guy's gonna stay healthy too?
- 50:08Speaker 2: You? You you just want you want a piece of you
- 50:10Speaker 2: always want a piece of Toronto. You and Steve Simmons
- 50:13Speaker 2: text each other on the side.
- 50:16Speaker 1: I just like Steve Simons, the fact he gives zero
- 50:18Speaker 1: you know what, like the fact they'll go after you.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Guys always great zero f's we got one.
- 50:22Speaker 1: More for you. We mentioned the last episode Ross Colton
- 50:25Speaker 1: could be on the move in Colorado. Didn't take long
- 50:26Speaker 1: for him to final new home. Now, remember I did
- 50:28Speaker 1: say editors, right, you call for told goalie prospect east
- 50:32Speaker 1: sack push in exchange for Golden Magnus Krona and two
- 50:35Speaker 1: third rounders, real quick, your thoughts for Colorado and Nashville.
- 50:39Speaker 2: That's a big that's a big haul for Ross Golton.
- 50:41Speaker 2: But I think it's a huge as an identity piece
- 50:43Speaker 2: for Nashville. I mean he can score physical good bottom
- 50:47Speaker 2: six guy. They need some of that, a little bit
- 50:50Speaker 2: of grit, a little bit of send to Pepa. But yeah,
- 50:52Speaker 2: that's a big haul for him. Two third rounders and
- 50:55Speaker 2: magnus Corona. Magnum magnum size is what we're talking, manum
- 51:01Speaker 2: magnum size Corona.
- 51:03Speaker 1: As we say goodbye, handing out flowers, you man with
- 51:05Speaker 1: the prospect, cold Boudoir for winning the HL Sports for
- 51:09Speaker 1: the year. We could tell with silence this entire episode,
- 51:12Speaker 1: but I saw get that.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Yeah he doesn't. He doesn't speak. He's got a Steve
- 51:15Speaker 2: Simmons baggag in his mouth.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Silent tel this week along with Date Thoms. If Nate's
- 51:19Speaker 1: not gonna talk, Tell is not going to talk. So
- 51:21Speaker 1: that was the deal again twice a week inn HLU Scripted.
- 51:23Speaker 1: We're back to the weekly schedule next week. We're not
- 51:25Speaker 1: going anywhere though. Draft in Buffalo plus Free Agency Canada Day,
