- 0:07The Baltimore Orioles face the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium for Game 2 of the 1966 World Series on October 6th.
- 0:15The Orioles lead the best of seven series, one game to none, and this is the NBC National Broadcast of Game 2 featuring announcers Bob Prince and Chuck Thompson.
- 0:38Hello everybody and welcome to Dodger Stadium. Along with Chuck Thompson, this is Bob Prince saying Game 2 is coming in from Los Angeles in the 1966 World Series.
- 0:49Brought to you by Reitler Corporation, makers of Plymouth, Dodge, Reitler, Imperial and Dodge trucks.
- 0:56By Gillette Techmatic, many weeks of continuous shaving.
- 1:00By Winston, Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.
- 1:05And by Carling Black Label, why not enjoy one right now?
- 1:14This broadcast is authorized under broadcast rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 1:22Any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the description in the accounts of this game without the expressed consent of the Commissioner of Baseball is prohibited.
- 1:32Another brilliant, sunshiny day here in Los Angeles, California.
- 1:37And anticipated sellout frong that will go up very close to the mark of $55,941 that sat in on yesterday's game and saw, of course, Baltimore take a 1-0 edge in the series, winning the game 5-2.
- 1:52But it's a horse of a different color, as they say, because Mr. Sandy Koufax, who's the man the Dodgers send out there today,
- 1:59and of course he has, without any question, an awful lot of things going for him, mainly like a left arm, 27 season victories.
- 2:08He doesn't frighten. He knows what it is to be in a World Series. He knows what it is to be a clutch performer.
- 2:14And it will be interesting to see how he'll handle Baltimore, or are they him, this afternoon.
- 2:20Chuck Thompson, the voice of the Baltimore Hills here to my left, will be doing the play-by-play with us.
- 2:25Chuck, I suppose, like many, you've had your ideas about how the game yesterday could have gone.
- 2:31I think most observers are generally agreed that in the second inning, following Lefevre's home run with Baltimore ahead,
- 2:38Parker gets the double, Gilliam the lock, Roseboro makes the down and try for extra bases, and Young Schneider takes it away from him,
- 2:45which, of course, if the catch is not made, the Dodgers are right back in the game, and they're kind of a game at that time.
- 2:52Exactly, Bob, and good afternoon. And talking about the second game of the 1966 World Series, Bob, I think I am more anxious to see this World Series game
- 3:02than any World Series game I have ever been associated with in the past.
- 3:06The simple reason being that, believe it or not, Bob, I am seeing Sandy Koufax in person this afternoon for the very first time in my life in competition.
- 3:14I have seen this great left-hander in spring training when he, well, let's face it, we just lobbed the ball to loosen up a little bit.
- 3:21I have seen him on television, but this afternoon I look at him in person.
- 3:25A man who has been just unbelievably great in National League competition, who has a 4-2 World Series record.
- 3:33If he wins today, Bob, he'll tie the record for the most series wins by a National League pitcher, shared by Jack Coombs, Mordecai Brown, and Kristi Matheson.
- 3:42He also has 18 and two-third scoreless innings, a streak of 18 and two-third scoreless innings in series play.
- 3:51Now, the record is by an American League left-hander, Whitey Ford, who hung up a series streak of 33 and two-third innings.
- 3:59Against the seemingly invincible Sandy Koufax, Baltimore this afternoon will bring out a young man who was born in New York City,
- 4:07who was raised in Los Angeles and educated in Scottsdale, Arizona, a young man by the name of Jim Palmer.
- 4:14I would not begin to compare Palmer and Koufax.
- 4:17The only information we can give you on Jim Palmer is this, that if this young man this afternoon is able to throw strikes,
- 4:24we are in for one of the most interesting pitching battles in recent series history.
- 4:30There can be no doubt about the fact that Jim Palmer is the hardest throwing pitcher on the Oriole staff.
- 4:36He has a fine fastball, a good curveball, and if he does get in trouble, it is always the same thing, control.
- 4:45So, Bob, if he can throw strikes this afternoon, a battle between Jim Palmer and Sandy Koufax might have people talking for a long time.
- 4:53Very possible and might be here for quite a while.
- 4:56Nothing but zeroes up on that board because Mr. Koufax knows what it is to get one run and then cling tenaciously to it.
- 5:02And one thing that all great pitchers do, and Koufax is certainly in that category, not only great, he perhaps is a superstar,
- 5:09if he gets in front of you about the fourth or fifth inning, then you are going to see more of Koufax than you saw before
- 5:15because he just keeps bearing down, bearing down, and bearing down.
- 5:19It will be quite interesting, too, to see how Koufax will pitch to Kurt Bleffery and to Boog Pal.
- 5:24He seems to somehow or other have an aversion to throw his breaking stuff to left-hand batters
- 5:30and comes with his overhand fastball in those situations, at least he did this past season in the National League.
- 5:37But I think, of course, the psychological advantage must now rest surely with the Baltimore Ball Club
- 5:44knowing the worst that can happen, they can go home even in the series and three at home.
- 5:48Whereas the Dodgers before, like last year, and Harry Walker pointed this out to all of us with Jim Simpson on his show,
- 5:55that last year when the Dodgers lost the first two, they lost to Minnesota, came home to play three.
- 6:00If they are to lose this game here this afternoon, then go to the Bird's Park in Baltimore for three over there,
- 6:06it will make quite a difference.
- 6:08It certainly could make all the difference in the world.
- 6:10And speaking of the spark and the help that the victory gave the Orioles yesterday,
- 6:14after it was all over and after it settled down, it was not a rather uproarious clubhouse.
- 6:19I think a lot of the Baltimore newsmen and the people who have been with this club all year
- 6:23expected perhaps that there might be a good deal more excitement in the clubhouse yesterday afternoon.
- 6:28Such was not the case.
- 6:30And I guess manager Hank Bauer summed it up best of all when he said that's just one game.
- 6:35And that's the way you have to play this series, one game at a time.
- 6:38Sandy Kopacs this afternoon for the Orioles presents a tremendous challenge.
- 6:42It will be, as you pointed out, Bob Prince, very interesting to see how he works to Powell and Beppery.
- 6:47It will also be very interesting to see how he works to Frank Robinson and to Brooks Robinson.
- 6:52Now, we asked Brooks Robinson how he fared against Sandy Kopacs.
- 6:56He said, well, about like most of them do, I guess, Chuck, I've had to hit-sauce him.
- 7:01The last two times I faced him in all-star games.
- 7:04I said, you're trying to tell me like you got a hit a year, is that it?
- 7:06And he said, that's about the way it goes.
- 7:08And Kopacs, when inquired about how he works out against Frank Robinson, said, sometimes yes and sometimes no.
- 7:15Yes, and as is the case, there's always a great, great quote that comes out of World Series times.
- 7:21And I think Frank Robinson's quote in today's paper was a dandy.
- 7:24A reporter asked him how he hit against Kopacs, and Robinson said, right-handed.
- 7:30Well, Bob, in the background, they can hear the public address announcer introducing the starting lineup for the Baltimore Orioles.
- 7:36I guess that'd be a good idea if we get to it right now.
- 7:38It changes today, and Kopacs always changes ball games.
- 7:42Leading off will be Aparicio at shortstop.
- 7:45Batting number two, the left-handed swinging left fielder, Kirk Bleppery.
- 7:49Batting three will be the right fielder, Frank Robinson, whose two-run home run in the first inning yesterday
- 7:56really sparked the Orioles and took a tremendous amount of pressure off some of the Oriole youngsters and first-year men.
- 8:03Frank will be followed by Brooks Robinson at third base.
- 8:07Then batting in the number five spot will be the left-hand swinging, Boog Powell, Baltimore first baseman.
- 8:13One of the happiest men in the American League these days will bat right behind Powell,
- 8:18a youngster who in his first World Series game had two base hits yesterday, Baltimore second baseman, Davey Johnson.
- 8:26The bottom three in the Baltimore order will be center fielder, right-hand batting Paul Blair.
- 8:31We'll tell you a little bit more about Paul as the game progresses.
- 8:34Batting eight will be Andy Echevarin, rookie Baltimore catcher, who conducted himself in an outstanding fashion yesterday,
- 8:41a native of California, and the introduction on pitcher Jim Palmer.
- 8:45And Bob, I'm not so sure of the significance of this, but Jim Palmer is warming out in the bullpen.
- 8:52Sandy Kofax is warming in front of his dugout.
- 8:55A big hand goes up for the rest of the Baltimore Orioles squad.
- 8:58And along those lines, one very brief comment before you introduce the Dodgers.
- 9:02Manager Hank Bauer has repeatedly said this year that every man on this roster has made a contribution,
- 9:07and he can back it up in black and white. They really have. Bob?
- 9:10They certainly have, Chuck. The significance to Palmer warming in the Baltimore bullpen could conceivably be that they have a pitching mound there,
- 9:19whereas here in front of the dugouts, they're pitching off a flat surface, and conceivably Palmer is electing to get used to it,
- 9:26because McNally did state that the high slope on the Dodger mound here botted him a little bit and caused him to throw the ball a little higher than he normally would.
- 9:35Now, moving into the Dodger lineup is Maury Wills, the shortstop, and Junior Gilliam will bat in the number two spot and play at third base.
- 9:44There's been really only one basic change in the Dodger lineup, as is the case, as Chuck just told you about Baltimore.
- 9:50Willie Davis will play center field and bat in the number three spot.
- 9:55And now moving into right field will be a very fine outfielder, Ron Perry, a left-hand batter, and batting in the number four spot.
- 10:04And you can hear from the applause that he is quite a local favorite.
- 10:08Jim LeFevre, that hard-nosed little second baseman for the Dodgers, is batting number five, playing second base.
- 10:15Now Johnson, Lou Johnson, has moved from right field into left field as Tommy Davis has been benched against Palmer.
- 10:22Left fielder Lou Johnson will bat in the number six spot.
- 10:28One of the heavy catchers of the game, and a man who is quoted by many, and of course, Kofax says it mostly,
- 10:35I have never had such rapport with a catcher in my life as I have with Roseboro.
- 10:39I just don't ever shake him off. What he calls for is the one that I thought I wanted to throw anyhow.
- 10:44So Roseboro bats seventh in catches.
- 10:46Wes Parker will be in the number eight spot for the Dodgers and playing at first.
- 10:51And on the mound, that superstar who truly does belong in another league, some league higher than this one,
- 10:58his name is Sandy Kofax. You'll hear the roar.
- 11:08Kofax with his bad left elbow really struggled to win 27, Chuck.
- 11:12I wonder what he would have done if he had a real good live flipper.
- 11:16I don't know whether this is a parallel that can obviously be made or not, but Kofax is just a,
- 11:21it's miraculous the way he can throw with the arm that he has.
- 11:25I think a parallel could be Mickey Manley. How can he run? Can he swing it with the new machine he's had?
- 11:29And now, ladies and gentlemen, from the Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, California, our national anthem.
- 11:36From Los Angeles, Arizona, Roy Collins, accompanied by John Beasley on the Dodgers Stadium, California.
- 11:46Ladies and gentlemen, Roy Collins.
- 11:49Oh, what a great man to be. I love to be in the league. I love to be in the league.
- 12:08That's why I love the league. Oh, I love the league.
- 12:19Oh, I love the league. Oh, I love the league. Oh, I love the league.
- 12:46Oh, I love the league. Oh, I love the league.
- 13:11Oh, I love the league. Oh, I love the league.
- 13:30We'll be back with more pregame color from Dodgers Stadium on the second game of the 1966 World Series right after this message.
- 13:38Oh, I love the league. Oh, I love the league. Oh, I love the league.
- 13:44Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Winston tastes good.
- 13:49It's delicious.
- 13:53Like your cigarette should.
- 14:00When I changed to Winston, I changed for good. Cause I got to taste like I knew I would.
- 14:15Winston tastes good. Like it should.
- 14:19When you change to Winston, change for good cause Winston tastes good like a big cigarette should.
- 14:30Winston tastes good like your cigarette should. Make your cigarette Winston.
- 14:36Winston.
- 14:41Before Sandy Koufax takes them out for the second game of the 1966 World Series between the Dodgers and the Orioles, we pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 14:51Saratoga, the authentic fishy behind the yellow label. The only mix that we know of that people built a city just to be near.
- 15:00WGYWGFM Schenectady.
- 15:05The umpires for game number two will be aligned in the following manner at the plate from the American League will be Nestor Shylock.
- 15:13And I have to pause now because one of baseball's greats. And I know what I say when I say great.
- 15:19Casey Stengel has just thrown out the first ball preceding game number two.
- 15:24Nestor Shylock is the American League representative at home plate today with Chris Palakoutis our first base.
- 15:29The second base umpire from the American League is John Ruck. The third base umpire from the National League is Mel Steiner.
- 15:35Down the left field foul line from the American League is Hal Drummond.
- 15:39And on the right field line from the National League is Bill Joukowski.
- 15:43Well that takes care of just about everything. Koufax completing his final tune up tosses.
- 15:48Amparicio will be stepping in and believe me it is with a great deal of pleasure that we bring to the microphone the voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the gunner himself, Bob Prince.
- 15:58Thank you very much Chuck Thompson. A real pleasure too to be here with you again and with Jim Simpson who has been helping out tremendously.
- 16:05And I'm looking at a statistic that Alan Roth who for many years was a Dodger statistician sent over.
- 16:11And I'm wondering if it was with some sort of a gleam in his eye that he remembered the years of Dodgerdom as against now working a course for NBC Sports.
- 16:20When he points out that Sandy Koufax had 27 complete games in 1966 whereas the entire Baltimore staff only had 23.
- 16:31That is a statistic that is something. A little later on when we get the chance and Chuck Thompson will have to fill you in on it.
- 16:37A near tragedy occurred to Mo Drabowski and we'll talk about it. Amparicio is in and he takes a strike.
- 16:44Amparicio went 0-5 in game one yesterday but drove in a run on an infield out.
- 16:50Coaching at first for Baltimore, Gene Woodling, Billy Hunter over at third.
- 16:54It is 3.30 down both lines, 4.10 straight out. Brilliant, sunshiny day.
- 16:59Gilliam is up side at third. Pitch from Koufax, the curve ball in there, sexy call.
- 17:07Gilliam now with two strikes to Amparicio deepens his position at third.
- 17:11They have Wills at short, Lafeeva at second and Wes Parker at first.
- 17:15Wasted his fastball long away, ball on.
- 17:18Lou Johnson in left field, Willie Davis in center, Ron Fairley in right.
- 17:22The game the Dodgers know they must win. One ball, two strikes.
- 17:27Amparicio swings on the curve, bounces wide at third and backhanded by Morrie Wills.
- 17:31Makes a strong throw but he doesn't get it. Gilliam over to try to cut it off but not.
- 17:36Wills went into the hole, came up beautifully on a backhand throw
- 17:39and Amparicio lays it out for an infield single.
- 17:43Number three, Lefthill and Kirk Lefhery.
- 17:49Lefthill there, Kirk Lefhery standing in now. He was one for three in the first game.
- 17:55Batting in the number two spot.
- 17:57Both teams have made just one change due to the pitching situation.
- 18:01Ron Fairley going into right, Johnson moving to left with Palmer pitching.
- 18:06Lefhery hits a high pop and it's shallow center.
- 18:09Willie Davis goes loping up and gets under one out.
- 18:16Lefhery flies out to shallow center field.
- 18:19Now the right fielder, Frank Robinson in.
- 18:22Two for five yesterday. A good home run, his second series moment,
- 18:26having already done so in 1961 against the Yankees while a member of the Reds,
- 18:31drove in two very big runs for Baltimore.
- 18:34There's one out here in the top half of the first.
- 18:37Amparicio, an infield single, to the hole at short.
- 18:40And now Frank Robinson in. The outfield over shifting way around to the left.
- 18:44They gap him in right center and Fairley gives him 90 feet of the right field line.
- 18:50The on deck batter will be Butch Robinson.
- 18:53Go back checks and they're running. The throw goes to first base.
- 18:55Parker on in the will. They got him.
- 19:07It is to be presumed whenever the Baltimore ball club gets a chance to run on co-packs,
- 19:12they will because he is not known to have a very good pick off move.
- 19:16In this case, he went right on to Parker and Parker right in the will for the out.
- 19:20Robinson takes the strike. Going on.
- 19:23Amparicio, of course, a very daring base runner and a very successful one down through the air.
- 19:29No balls, one strike.
- 19:32That time Sandy took a little off his curve ball.
- 19:37As Chuck said yesterday, we could spend hour upon hour telling you about all the records this great co-packs has put up.
- 19:44He's had exactly 110 strikeout games during his major league career.
- 19:49A ball up and in one ball and two strikes.
- 19:57He had 15 strikeouts against the Yankees in 1963 in the World Series.
- 20:01So he can bring it to you. Foul back by Robinson wanted to.
- 20:08We got the proper break just in case you might have missed it.
- 20:12Molde Dabrowski was rather badly burned on his left arm last night.
- 20:16And Chuck will be able to fill you in on it more as he is at the hotel where the Baltimore club is quartered here in Los Angeles.
- 20:21One ball, two strikes. Robinson hits a high fly to left field Johnson coming over to get under it and makes the play to the driver's side.
- 20:33No runs, one hit, no errors and nobody left. And we go now to the Dodger first inning here. No score.
- 20:40Now a false salute to the world.
- 20:43We're in the home of a man with a most unusual hobby. Mr. Wilvers, you collect beer cans.
- 20:49Beer cans. Tell us about them.
- 20:52Here's what we call a first day can. Pick it up in Atlanta. The first day the crawling black label brewery opened up there.
- 20:57And this one?
- 20:58Priceless. Another black label can from that Phoenix brewery. The ring tab is on the bottom instead of the top.
- 21:03I see. That's sort of a pop bottom can.
- 21:07Here, black label can from that Baltimore brewery. Look, proven filled in Baltimore. Baltimore. Hell, instead of R, you see.
- 21:14Mistake, very rare.
- 21:15Here's a match block of six from Carling's Tacoma brewery. Beautiful, isn't it?
- 21:19It looks like a six pack to me.
- 21:22Match block of Tacoma. It sure went off to be $90 for these.
- 21:25I noticed, Mr. Wilvers, your whole collection seems to be Carling black label cans.
- 21:30Ah, we collections are only human after all I do drink all this beer.
- 21:34And what does Mrs. Wilvers think about your collection?
- 21:36She won't ask them.
- 21:40Ready now to move into the Dodger first inning and young Jim Palmer, the flame-crawling right-hander that Chuck was talking about at the end. And he'll go to Maury Wilves, who sent us a free at-batch yesterday, a slick batter.
- 22:07A slick hitting infield in baseball, and Wilves leads it up.
- 22:17Palmer's got him off with a fastball, and Wilves took with a strike.
- 22:23Jimmy Palmer was 15-10 in 1966, leading the Baltimore staff in wins.
- 22:31He turned that one over, and it just turned outside a little on him, one-on-one.
- 22:36One ball, one strike.
- 22:38Third baseman Brooks Robinson up tight at third.
- 22:43He hunted and foul tipped, and that one caught him by a nest of shot-outs.
- 22:47A ball and two strikes.
- 22:49Brooks Robinson at third base, Luis Apolicio at short.
- 22:53Johnson at second, Boog Powell at first, Kirk Bluffery in left field, Paul Blair in center, and Frank Robinson in right.
- 23:00Coaching is Preston Gomes at third, and Danny Ozark at first for the Dodgers.
- 23:07Palmer, one ball, two strike picks, one hopper back to him.
- 23:11Now, for us, those were all the Boog Powell holes.
- 23:15There you see Chuck Thompson, one of the things that National League opponents have had to worry about a little bit.
- 23:20They realize with the great Dodgers' speed, a slight bubble, and you've got to come up fast.
- 23:24And, of course, too, sometimes when you do come up fast, that way you hurry yourself into an error.
- 23:29Very true. Palmer came out of it. I think he is all right.
- 23:32He was kind of shaking his right hand just a little bit.
- 23:34And, Bob, before we get any deeper in the ball game, about Mo Grabowski, it was a minor sort of an accident.
- 23:38At the hotel this morning, a big pot full of hot coffee was spilled, both over the boy carrying and over the left arm of Mo Grabowski.
- 23:45Between the wrist and the left elbow, he has been treated by the Oriole trainer, Eddie Wiedner.
- 23:50He's a little uncomfortable, but when rested, we'll be able to see service without too much difficulty.
- 23:55Palmer had a couple of practice pitches, Bob, apparently he is all right. Here we go.
- 23:59So now, switch batting junior Gilliam is in.
- 24:01Opa 2 yesterday, drove in a run, however.
- 24:03The left-hander pops it up into the air, tore it up, or he showed it short.
- 24:07Lewis goes back, shades his eyes, gets under, 2 down.
- 24:10And the indication on the first two batters is that Palmer's fast ball is live.
- 24:16He's either going to make you hit him into the ground or pop him up.
- 24:19That means that ball is moving.
- 24:23Not only velocity in toward the plate, but it's doing something.
- 24:28Willie Davis, notorious first time up for a swing, does and fouls to the left.
- 24:39Willie had a 1-for-4 situation yesterday.
- 24:51Center balls, one strike to the left-hand batting center fielder, Willie Davis, no score.
- 24:55Change up, up and in for a ball, 1-1.
- 24:58Palmer had some home run problems.
- 24:59Gopher balls, they call them in the pitcher's language, had considerable trouble early,
- 25:04giving up 13 homers in his first 14 starts, but then began to control that tendency,
- 25:10yielding only 8 in his last 16 starts.
- 25:12A ball inside, two balls, a strike.
- 25:20Two balls, one strike.
- 25:25No score, two out and on, Dodger first inning.
- 25:28There's a fast ball he brought to him and Willie Davis fouled it back.
- 25:37Ball two, spec two.
- 25:403.30 down both lines, then it goes to 3.80, 3.90 and 4.10.
- 25:45Very equidistant in exactly one of the most beautiful baseball parks in the nation.
- 25:50Ball two, strike two, pitch.
- 25:52Tuck him out swinging and he put that baby right into his wheelhouse, as they call it,
- 25:56and threw it by him.
- 25:57So it's 3 up and 3 down for the Dodgers, and at the end of one, there is no score.
- 26:04And now here's our favorite umpire, Nick Perron, with another anecdote.
- 26:08A particular phrase basically in our league has what we call an early foot.
- 26:12He is also Old Moon friendly.
- 26:14One day he greets me with, say ump, how may I ask is your dear mother?
- 26:19My mother was fine, I answer, and she told me to tell you to keep your foot on a bag.
- 26:24He does not face.
- 26:25He tries again with, they say you discovered a terrific new razor.
- 26:29They say, write thy reply.
- 26:31It is just on the market, the Gillette Tachmatic.
- 26:34It ends blade handling forever.
- 26:36Six super stainless steel shaving edges are coiled and sealed inside a cartridge,
- 26:41like film and a camera.
- 26:43Each edge lasts about a week.
- 26:45Flip a lever and the new edge locks in place.
- 26:47The Gillette Tachmatic is very sharp against the beard, but very, very light against the skin.
- 26:53Try it.
- 26:55Well, next road trip he greets me with, hey ump, the Gillette Tachmatic is the lightest touch of shaving.
- 27:01You were right.
- 27:03Early foot I rejoin there.
- 27:05I am never wrong.
- 27:07Into the Baltimore second inning of a scoreless ball game, Brooks Robinson leads it off, playing it third,
- 27:14and he takes a tailing delivery on the outside corner for a strike.
- 27:18Brooks homered yesterday, going one for five, and of course picked up an RBI.
- 27:22Nothing in one.
- 27:24High pop.
- 27:26It looks like Gilliam will field it in foul territory, although Roseboro is over there,
- 27:30and calls him off and makes the catch right in front of him.
- 27:35So, Brooks Robinson is out on a top foul down the left field or down the third base line.
- 27:41Now, Brooke Powell standing in.
- 27:45He went one for five yesterday, but he got more mileage out of tearing first base apart than he did anything else.
- 27:51As he ran by it, he skidded it one way, broke all the moorings loose,
- 27:56and took a header and got up and moved in the second for a double.
- 28:00There's a curve for a strike.
- 28:02He got a lot of kidding in the process after the game, too.
- 28:05The players are saying that's the only time they ever saw a fellow slide twice in a two-base hit.
- 28:10Another one strike.
- 28:12Kopacs, another curve ball, strike foul, going two.
- 28:16So, Kopacs has given early indication that he'll work his curve ball to the left-hand hitting, Brooke Powell.
- 28:23In the National League, when he would go to Matthews and others, many times he just did not overhand fastball.
- 28:29He did then. He just missed with it outside of all the two strikes.
- 28:36One out, none on. Baltimore's second inning, no score.
- 28:41One-two pitch.
- 28:43Good game out. Nope, it was foul-tipped and not held.
- 28:46So, Brooke Powell has life at the plate.
- 28:52American League umpires traditionally behind the plate where the outside chest protector,
- 28:58The National League, using the inside chest protector.
- 29:01Kopacs getting the sign from Roseborough, wasting no time.
- 29:04One-two delivery. A curve ball hit deep into right field.
- 29:07Ron Fairley drifting back near the warning track, down toward the right field line, gets there for the out.
- 29:15Brooke Powell got some pretty good wood to that, but not quite all of the sweet spot he wanted.
- 29:19And going back in front of the 3-30 mark, Ron Fairley hauled it in.
- 29:25Now Dave Johnson, the second baseman who sparkled in the field for Baltimore yesterday
- 29:29and who had a very wonderful day at the plate, too, for four,
- 29:32batting in the number six spot, playing at second base, standing in his right hand batter.
- 29:37Dodger outfield, overshifting to the left.
- 29:40That ball strikes at the knees. It was called.
- 29:46On deck, center fielder Paul Blair.
- 29:48Here's the 0-1 delivery, and this one is in there, strike two call.
- 29:52Kopacs, in turning that one over, had that ball running away from the right hand batter,
- 29:55picking up the outside corner.
- 30:00Nothing and two to count.
- 30:02Two down and on, no score in the second.
- 30:04The curve ball and outspeed foul over past Billy Hunter, into the Dodger dugout.
- 30:08Dodger dugout at Dodger Stadium, located on the third base side,
- 30:12and of course, Baltimore on the first base side.
- 30:17Nothing and two, with two down here in the top half of the second inning.
- 30:21Now the 0-2 pitch.
- 30:23He let up on it, and he hits a little popper into right center,
- 30:26going back is Lefebvre, getting out there and makes the play.
- 30:31Billy Davidson barely had no play on the ball,
- 30:34but Lefebvre scampered back quickly and got under, and that retired the side.
- 30:39Three up and three down, and they go now into the bottom of the second inning.
- 30:42Baltimore in the back, here's our score.
- 30:46This is Joe Garagiola.

- 31:39It's something I think you'll want to keep even after the series is over.
- 31:43They have just put an announcement on the Panagram here.
- 31:48Pleased to have with us today guests of Commissioner Eckerd,
- 31:51Astronauts Lieutenant Colonel Ed White,
- 31:53Lieutenant Colonel Gus Grissom,
- 31:55Lieutenant Commander Roger Schafer.
- 31:57Lieutenant Colonel White was the first man to walk in space,
- 32:00and then they said, a face on balls the hard way.
- 32:05You can see the mind of one Red Patterson there working that one out.
- 32:09Ron Fairley, the right fielder,
- 32:11batting him a number four spot, a left hand batter.
- 32:14Dodgers have him as a very fine clutch man, a good outfielder,
- 32:19and he's knocking some very big runs for them.
- 32:21He takes inside from Palmer a ball.
- 32:24Baltimore playing it outside.
- 32:26Here's the 1-0 pitch.
- 32:28It's him there on the corner, one and one, and Fairley doesn't like it.
- 32:33Sandy Kopacs has delivered 20 pitches in two innings,
- 32:37and only two of them were called balls.
- 32:40For quite a while this year, he averaged just under 90 pitches per game.
- 32:45One-one, underneath the knees, called a ball, two and one.
- 32:53Young Palmer will not be 21 years of age until the 15th of October.
- 32:59Two balls a strike, and it's a ball three.
- 33:04He might not be old enough to be aware of the fact that he could be frightened.
- 33:09Maybe he just isn't old enough to know any better yet, huh?
- 33:15He was a big, big man for Baltimore.
- 33:18Three balls a strike to Ron Fairley.
- 33:23He walked him.
- 33:28So Ron Fairley draws a leadoff walk for the Tigers here in the second of the scoreless game.
- 33:34And here's LeFevre, who had a home run yesterday in three official trips.
- 33:41Batting left-handed, a number five batter in the Dodger batting order,
- 33:45flying at second base.
- 33:46They play him straight out, Ron Fairley, medium speed, the runner is first.
- 33:52Fly ball, lift it down the left field line.
- 33:54It's going to slice out of here, pal.
- 34:01The very gaily-decked Dodger Stadium with the bunting all over the railings and all.
- 34:07Beautiful.
- 34:09Nothing in one.
- 34:10Ron Fairley, the runner at first, held by Boob Pal.
- 34:13This gives LeFevre a little bit of a hole at the right side of the diamond
- 34:17as Johnson's playing over a little to his right.
- 34:21Palmer works to him, and the ball is spun at pal, 0-2.
- 34:26LeFevre appeared that time to give that bun away,
- 34:29but he was running around just enough that Palmer moved that ball in on him
- 34:34and came right off the mound over toward first and quickly.
- 34:37In his high school days, Jim Palmer quite an athlete,
- 34:40and early in his baseball career, scouts were not too certain
- 34:43as to whether they thought he might be an outfielder or a pitcher,
- 34:46so he's agile on the mound.
- 34:48No balls, two strikes.
- 34:49Pitcher can win a lot of games with his gloves.
- 34:530-2 delivery, he lets up on it, sends it into the dirt low.
- 34:56Palmer blocking it nicely, a ball and two strikes.
- 35:021-2.
- 35:05No score, we're in the bottom of the second.
- 35:08Ron Fairley at first on a walk.
- 35:12That came out swinging, he changed up on him beautifully.
- 35:15Boy, he came in with a great overhand change curveball.
- 35:18That's the second strikeout for Palmer.
- 35:21Now here's Sweet Lou Johnson.
- 35:29Went 0-3 yesterday.
- 35:32This youngster spent a long time in the minor leagues,
- 35:34which Chuck and I discussed with you yesterday,
- 35:36and he's happy to be right where he is.
- 35:40He came to play.
- 35:41The outfield swings to the left on him.
- 35:43Fairley short lead at first.
- 35:44Palmer checks and delivers.
- 35:48Fairley going in second on his way to third,
- 35:50and the ball is picked up by Robinson and dropped
- 35:53from his knees and into second base on the play goes Johnson.
- 35:59It looked as though Dave Johnson dropped off the ball,
- 36:02thinking that Robinson was going to make the play on it.
- 36:05And then Robinson delayed, thinking that he was.
- 36:11And the result was when Frank came up with it,
- 36:14and he slipped and went down, and it will be ruled a double.
- 36:22So the Dodgers get their first hit in the ball game,
- 36:26and the catcher is Johnny Roosevelt, 0-4 yesterday.
- 36:30And a very typical Dodger rally in the making.
- 36:33A base on balls and a blue pop at the end of the bat.
- 36:40This is not said now in the direction or in any way.
- 36:42This is a typical Dodger rally,
- 36:45and they did it so many times over the season that you know they play for it.
- 36:49Baltimore infield is up to Roseboro.
- 36:52My ball hit up back short after Richo dropping back.
- 36:56He'll make the catch, and it's two down.
- 36:58And that time Mr. Palmer really jammed Roseboro.
- 37:01Did he put it in on that bat handle?
- 37:09Now, that's Parker standing in.
- 37:11One for five yesterday, a double.
- 37:14And we'll see how Manager Bauer elects to handle this situation.
- 37:23At Richo, now talking with young Palmer.
- 37:28Catch it, Baron.
- 37:30Standing there as though that's what they'll do.
- 37:32They'll walk him to get to Kofax.
- 37:42At one time, Chuck Thompson, Randy Kofax was a switch hitter.
- 37:46And he got up there batting left-handed once and was jammed with a pitch.
- 37:53And this occasion then the blister on his finger,
- 37:56and he felt that that had a lot to do with the problems that he had later on.
- 38:01So he practiced switch hitting today.
- 38:03We'll see whether or not he's going to go up there.
- 38:05Because naturally batting left-handed,
- 38:07he clicks the money hand right up there where he doesn't want it.
- 38:11I have to leave that in the dugout if I was Sam.
- 38:13Believe me.
- 38:18He got a bat right-handed.
- 38:27Now the Baltimore infield is back.
- 38:33When you look at Sandy Kofax's batting average,
- 38:35you have to factor it out and get it into a few decimals.
- 38:40It's.076.
- 38:44Why ball in the shallow right?
- 38:46In fact, Johnson's dropping back to second base.
- 38:48He's there, and the Baltimore Royals are out of the jam.
- 38:54No runs, one hit.
- 38:56No Baltimore errors, and three Dodgers painted.
- 38:59At the end of two, it is Scarlett.
- 39:06I've just run out.
- 39:08You've just run out?
- 39:10I'm out of cigarettes.
- 39:12Well, try one of mine.
- 39:14Try one of yours?
- 39:16Sure, try one of mine.
- 39:18Have a salo.
- 39:20Salo is the best of cigarettes.
- 39:23Salo refreshes your taste for you.
- 39:26Salo is the best of cigarettes.
- 39:30All of America's turning to.
- 39:33When you buy a mess of cigarettes,
- 39:37don't take anything top of that.
- 39:40Salo is the best of cigarettes.
- 39:43The one brand that has sold all the rest.
- 39:48Try one of mine.
- 39:50Turn to Salem, turn to Salem.
- 39:53For a taste that's three times fresh.
- 40:03In the event you're just tuning into the broadcast,
- 40:05Luis Aparicio went off with an infield single for Baltimore,
- 40:08and they kicked him off.
- 40:10Kofax to Parker to Wills,
- 40:12and Kofax has slammed the door since.
- 40:15Dodgers had a real good fret writing in the second when Fairleigh walked,
- 40:18and after one out Johnson blooped to double the right.
- 40:21And Roseboro popped the short,
- 40:23and Parker was given the intention to lock in,
- 40:25and Kofax popped the second, that was it.
- 40:27The batter now is Paul Blair, the center fielder standing in.
- 40:30A right hand batter, and he takes a curve ball strike.
- 40:33Nothing in one.
- 40:35Top of the third.
- 40:37There's a high puck foul coming back straight overhead, 0-2.
- 40:45Andy Etchebaran is the on-duck batter for Baltimore in this scoreless game,
- 40:50now moving into the top of the third.
- 40:52Quite a contrast to yesterday's game.
- 40:56The 0-2 pick lined for right field, and Fairleigh appears to have admitted,
- 41:00started in on the ball, then backed up a step,
- 41:02and made a chest high catch, and there's one away.
- 41:07That'll bring up Andy Etchebaran, who singled yesterday in three trips,
- 41:11batting into number eight spot, a right hand batter.
- 41:15No score in the top of the third, one out and then on.
- 41:22This now puts the Baltimore pitcher, Jim Palmer, in the on-deck circle.
- 41:29Sandy getting the sign now from catcher Johnny Roseboro.
- 41:32It's obvious his left arm is about three inches shorter than his right.
- 41:36There's a check on the pitch, and he picks it up high for a ball.
- 41:40Sandy questioning a little bit, thinking perhaps he not only had the strikes on,
- 41:44but surely a little better than a half swing.
- 41:47One ball and a strike.
- 41:49That was a good swing, even though he didn't get the ball one-and-one.
- 41:55One ball, one strike, one out and one on, and we're in the top half of the third.
- 42:0159,945,947 here. Strike swinging.
- 42:14Yesterday they had 55,941.
- 42:18How the other six got in and where they are, I don't know.
- 42:23Strike three, as Carl to Etchebaran has that time.
- 42:27That makes him down the middle with a good fastball.
- 42:32Another one to you, the third.
- 42:35Jim Palmer.
- 42:38So Sandy Koufax records his first strikeout, and now right-hand batting,
- 42:43right-hand pitching, Jim Palmer stands him two down, in the top of the third, no score.
- 42:53He's off the curve ball inside, ball one.
- 43:06High pop in the infield. That's a mile up.
- 43:08We'll see who's going to camp under it.
- 43:10Looks like Gilliam is going to, and does, to make Steve Katz to retire the side.
- 43:15So it is three up, three down, and we go now to the bottom of the third inning.
- 43:18Baltimore nothing, Los Angeles nothing.
- 43:20Well, the World Series marks the end of baseball action for the year,
- 43:24but football is shifting into high gear.
- 43:26And if you'd like first-rate seats for the top games and for less than 50 cents a game,
- 43:31I have a suggestion. Get Motorola Rectangular Color Television.
- 43:35You see, Motorola Color Television costs as little as 15 cents a viewing hour.
- 43:40That's less than 50 cents a game, based on the price of the table model on three-year contracts.
- 43:47You get Motorola's solid-state reliability at 17 critical points,
- 43:51numbered controls for easy color tuning,
- 43:54and the big, bright rectangular picture pioneered by Motorola.
- 43:58This year, see football in color and enjoy it more.
- 44:02You'll also get a bigger kick out of your favorite nighttime shows,
- 44:05because they are in color, too.
- 44:07See your Motorola dealer and discover how you can have color television
- 44:11for as little as 15 cents a viewing hour with Motorola.
- 44:15Now introducing the new Flight of Color Television.
- 44:19We pause 30 seconds now for station identification.
- 44:23Your radio has not gone cuckoo.
- 44:28That's merely the sound of Saratoga Vichy and its long-lasting fizz.
- 44:33The story behind that fizz is even stranger than the sound.
- 44:36You see, nature carbonates Saratoga Vichy,
- 44:40giving it a perky little fizz with incredible staying power.
- 44:44Deep-strings fresh, far longer than club soda or any of the imitation vichys.
- 44:49Saratoga, the authentic vichy in the yellow label.
- 44:54WGYWGFM Schenectady.
- 44:58...name of morning, M-O-R-N-I-N-G.
- 45:00Maurice, morning wills. We'll lead it up.
- 45:04The attendance figure announced that 55,947 is a new Dodger Stadium record in World Series.
- 45:11Armour works low to will.
- 45:13They now have drawn here in the two games, 111,888.
- 45:19Wills was a comebacker victim in the first inning, going out picture to first.
- 45:24It looked like he was going to bunt and he got a zinger on the inside.
- 45:27It got him out of there in a hurry. Two balls and no strikes.
- 45:33Gilliam, the on-deck batter with Willie Davis to follow.
- 45:35There is no score in the bottom of the third at Dodger Stadium.
- 45:40Armour working. Strike is called.
- 45:44Two and one.
- 45:45Some of the fans are not umpiring quite as much as Mr. Salak behind the plate, as you can hear in the background.
- 45:51A strike is a strike to the batter under a lot of different ways.
- 45:56There is a ball bunted foul.
- 45:57Eschebern picked it up very quickly.
- 45:59Shoot two.
- 46:00He had a play on him, had it remain fair.
- 46:04But if a batter of any stature gets in there and then crouches way over, a pitch could actually be up around his head and be a strike.
- 46:17Two balls, two strikes, no score.
- 46:20Dodger is batting him in the bottom of the third.
- 46:24Young Jim Palmer working to Maury Wills.
- 46:28This is of course the spot right here where he wants the decision if he can get it favorably on a 2-2 pitch.
- 46:34And here it comes.
- 46:36Line down the left line slicing a foul.
- 46:38Two-two.
- 46:42As we all discussed yesterday, the Baltimore outfield employs what was at one time known as the Richie Eschebern shift.
- 46:50The left fielder Bluffer is practically in foul territory and Blair is way over.
- 46:55The right fielder Robinson is a good hundred feet or more off the right field line.
- 47:02Should Wills ever get a chance on a pitcher's mistake to pull one down the right field line, there would be some red faces somewhere.
- 47:09Because there's nobody out there to go get the ball.
- 47:15Two balls, two strikes.
- 47:18Hits it down towards second base.
- 47:20Robinson is up and on to Boogpow and there's one out in the Dodger third.
- 47:25Here's Junior Gilliam now.
- 47:27Not too short in the first inning.
- 47:31Might explain as we did yesterday, you perhaps hear what sounds like an echo.
- 47:37Dodger baseball fans have been accustomed to listening to their great voice of the Dodgers, Vince Kelly, and they bring their transistor radios.
- 47:44And of course they all just create one big buildup.
- 47:47And you hear yourself coming back at you all the time.
- 47:53As they watch the game and pick up interesting side lights from many during the regular season.
- 47:58There's a strike call, though, and a one.
- 48:04No balls, one strike.
- 48:10And this ball was a little fast on outside.
- 48:12He turned it over, one and one.
- 48:17Of significance, you might notice in this game if Wills gets the board and Gilliam to follow in the right situation,
- 48:23some rather tremendous base call, a quick fast ball to the inside corner, close strike two, one and two.
- 48:29Or if Wills gets on and Gilliam is the next man, you'll see some Terpsichore out there.
- 48:37One ball, two strikes.
- 48:40His curveball missed a little bit. Palmer didn't like it that time. Two balls, two strikes.
- 48:48No score, one out and then on in the Dodger third. Junior Gilliam switched batting up their left-handed.
- 48:56Now the 2-2 pitch, bounced on a big chop toward short, big chest high hop for Aparicio, low throw but hell but booed foul.
- 49:07Willie Davis.
- 49:10Now Willie Davis standing in. Willie struck out in the first inning.
- 49:19Each side in with a base hit. A bloop double by the Dodgers' Lou Johnson, an infield single by Baltimore's Luis Aparicio.
- 49:26That's it.
- 49:28The Dodgers mounted the most serious threat in the second with runners at second and third and one out, but Palmer pitched out of it.
- 49:34Foul coming straight back and there's that first pitch swing by Willie Davis.
- 49:46No ball, one strike. The outfield playing Willie straight away.
- 49:53The 0-1 delivery, he turned that one over and sent it outside like a screwball, low and away. One ball, one strike.
- 50:05Two down in the Dodger third.
- 50:10Now the 1-1 from Palmer, swinging a foul and he took a little off the curveball that time and Willie Davis got out in front of it, bouncing his foul behind the plate umpire.
- 50:18A ball and two strikes.
- 50:35Here's the 1-2 delivery. A tie for a ball, 2-2.
- 50:38It would be interesting to pick the brains of the collective pitching staffs of the Baltimore pitchers and then the Dodger pitchers.
- 50:47Baltimore pitchers can go out every day figuring that over the season they probably are going to have about five runs going for them before the game is over.
- 50:54Swing and a miss, he stuck him out and that will retire the side on his third strikeout.
- 50:59Three up and three down at the end of three innings, Baltimore nothing, Los Angeles nothing.
- 51:06Say, I want to ask you something. Are you willing to accept a challenge? A challenge from Gillette?
- 51:12Well if you are, here's all you have to do. Go out and buy a pack of Gillette Super Stainless Blades.
- 51:18Put one of the blades into your razor and then shave with it. Sound easy enough?
- 51:22Sure, because that's not the challenge. The challenge is to try and go back to your old way of shaving after that.
- 51:29And frankly man, you just won't be able to do it because you'll be spoiled by this new blade.
- 51:35You see, the Gillette Super Stainless is more than just a new razor blade. It's a whole new way of shaving.
- 51:42Because there's a miracle plastic coating baked onto the cutting edge. A coating that actually reduces the pull when you shave.
- 51:49This blade is invented and patented by Gillette. We call this blade the Spoiler.
- 51:54Because once you try it, you'll be completely and unequivocally spoiled.
- 51:59Are you gaming up a try? Just ask for the Spoiler. Alias, the Gillette Super Stainless.
- 52:06Louis Apericio.
- 52:10Baltimore now turns their line up around and comes up for the second time with Apericio,
- 52:17who had the infield single in the hole it shored in the first and then was cut down from Kopacs to Parker to Wills.
- 52:24Louis says they're right hand batter. They play them rather shallow, straight out in center field.
- 52:29Wings and he fouls back. Looks like he was just trying to punch that one.
- 52:38But continuing with the thought of the moment before, the Baltimore pictures know that basically on a day in, day out situation,
- 52:45they can look for four or five runs from somebody on their club.
- 52:49There's a high pop and that ball is moving and it's going to be up near the mound and coming up in between the mound
- 52:55and the catcher Roseboro is Gilliam to make a fair ball catch. Pop to third, one away.
- 53:00Building up bluff rate.
- 53:03Now then, considering that over the season all of the Dodger pictures have to figure out how they're going to protect the one run they're going to get.
- 53:13So that has been, of course, one of the great, great things about the Dodger ball club. They're a fine defense.
- 53:19You make the error, they take advantage of it and they're very superb pitching.
- 53:23Weprie takes it low and away. Ball one. Fly to center field. It's first time up.
- 53:28We are in the top of the fourth, one out and an on. No score. Baltimore and Los Angeles in game two.
- 53:34A change curve and it stayed a little high. Two balls and no strike.
- 53:45Now the 2-0 pitch to Weprie. Unstatted and hit it foul back over here to our left.
- 53:56Weprie drew 18 walks in one 11 game stretch back in July, including seven in two games against the New York Yankees.
- 54:03So it shows that, as Chuck was talking yesterday, he's got a pretty good idea where that pitch is.
- 54:08There is a high top foul to the left and I believe it will be up into the seats it is, two and two.
- 54:21Two balls, two strikes. One out, none on. Bluffery in the batter.
- 54:25Frank Robinson to follow.
- 54:33Kopacs ready to go. It's a two pitch and he hits this one, Weprie does.
- 54:38High in the air, back of short. Wills drifting back on the grass, 20, 30 feet, makes the play.
- 54:45Now to indicate the man in which Kopacs' ball is moving, he has fouled out Robinson to the catcher.
- 54:53He popped up Johnson to the second baseman. He popped up Palmer to the third baseman.
- 54:57And now Aparicio and Weprie have hit little poppers. So that ball is doing something.
- 55:02It's just not coming straight in. He's got some high risers on it.
- 55:05Actually, Bob, the only fellow who hit the ball on the ground was Aparicio for his leg hit in the first inning.
- 55:10Everything else has been right up in the air.
- 55:12Yes sir, it's moving. Here's Frank Robinson now.
- 55:16He took a good cut but that ball was moving away from him and hits 0-1, dialing it straight back.
- 55:25They've over shifted around to the left on Frank. No ball, one strike.
- 55:33This one came in under his chin and all the way to the backstop, 1-1.
- 55:39Robinson has been hit a few times and when he first came into the Major Leagues with the Cincinnati Reds,
- 55:45he has shut the record. It's the one thing he didn't want. He was hit more by pitchers than any man going.
- 55:50But he crowds the plate. You can actually hit him with a strike, 1-1.
- 55:54And he takes it inside this time, ball two, two balls and a strike.
- 55:59He appears to have straightened up just a little bit here from the days we have seen him when he was with Cincinnati.
- 56:04And it might be that his reflexes have gone back just a little bit.
- 56:07And he very wisely has moved off the plate a little, 2-1.
- 56:11Ball three, fastball inside, up the knees, 3-1.
- 56:20Go-backs naturally will be a very down pitcher at all times, but perhaps more so against a Frank Robinson
- 56:26because he realized what this fellow can do with the back. There's a foul coming back up toward our booth.
- 56:31Screamed it.
- 56:38Robinson was hit ten times this year by pitched balls, raising his lifetime total to 128 for 11 seasons.
- 56:45And that's the record I know he wishes he didn't have. Three balls, two strikes.
- 56:49The curve way upstairs and he walked him and Sandy scuffles around the mound, disgusted with himself.
- 56:55That's the first walk that Sandy has issued.
- 56:59So with two down, Robinson becomes the second baseman against Copax.
- 57:03And now Brooks Robinson, who fouled out to the catcher, Johnny Roseboro, stands in.
- 57:09There's no score. We are in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 57:15And Frank Robinson is now the runner. Brooks Robinson the batter.
- 57:20Copax delivers a swing and a miss, 4-1.
- 57:26Brooks saw a little of that. Maybe he didn't because Sandy might have given him that radio pitch,
- 57:31The one you can hear but not see, because he had something on that one.
- 57:36A little lob throw over to first base.
- 57:43Copax checks and the pitch. He's high around the bill of the cap, a ball, 1-1.
- 57:51They've over-shifted in the outfield. They gap Brooks Robinson in the right center
- 57:55and give fairly enough room over there where he's 90 feet off the line.
- 58:00One ball, one strike.
- 58:03Brooks fouls down the right side over to our right, 1-2.
- 58:08There's a pretty good gap in between Parker holding on the runner Robinson and Lefebvre,
- 58:15who's well over to his own right.
- 58:17And Brooks that time appeared to be trying to take advantage of that hole.
- 58:20He has great bat control. One ball, two strikes.
- 58:28Curve ball, and that was awfully close, 2-2.
- 58:39Two balls, two strikes. Robinson edging off first, and there's a little idle toss over.
- 58:45I mentioned earlier, Sandy does not have the greatest move in baseball in picking him up.
- 58:49I doubt that he's had much practice.
- 58:51Here's the ball hit down toward the hole, and Gilliam Bobbles the ball.
- 58:55And Frank Robinson turns and second base and he's going to be tapped off.
- 58:59That's a double to fall back.
- 59:02We'll have to tell you more about that play in a moment.
- 59:06And we'll have to get a ruling.
- 59:10And that may be forthcoming in a little while, but nonetheless,
- 59:13at the end of three and one half innings, it is Baltimore nothing, Los Angeles nothing.
- 59:19Plymouth is out to win you over this year.
- 59:36Follow your heart, see your Plymouth dealer today.
- 59:42This is Edie Gourmet for your Plymouth dealer.
- 59:45He's out to win you over for 67 with the most tempting theories ever.
- 59:49A new supercar, the Belvedere GPS. Beautiful all-new Valium.
- 59:54Your Plymouth dealer, all-heart.
- 59:57Plymouth is out to win you over this year.
- 1:00:03Follow your heart, see your Plymouth dealer today.
- 1:00:12And here is all-new Valium and sports-bred Belvederes now at your Plymouth dealers.
- 1:00:18He's got what it takes to win you over.
- 1:00:21There's still buzzing here at Dodger Stadium on that one.
- 1:00:26And the official scorers have ruled an error, charged to Gilliam,
- 1:00:30allowing Brooks Robinson to get to first base safely.
- 1:00:34Now Frank Robinson went to second, and with Gilliam and Wills way out of position
- 1:00:38and nobody covering third, he started to go over to third and then changed his mind.
- 1:00:42And then Gilliam, picking up the ball, snapped the throw to the fever
- 1:00:46for the pickoff on Frank Robinson and retired the side.
- 1:00:48So that inning total will show you no runs, no hits,
- 1:00:52The first error in the World Series of 1966 and one stranded.
- 1:00:58The batter now is Ron Fairley. He walked his first time up and he takes the ball through.
- 1:01:12Two balls and no strikes in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:01:16Fairley, fly ball in the right center field.
- 1:01:18They have to hustle for this one. Blair is over there though and runs it down.
- 1:01:21He charged for the gap shot in between Frank Robinson and Paul Blair,
- 1:01:25Paul Blair hampering over to his left very quickly.
- 1:01:28Called it in.
- 1:01:31Here is Jim LeFever, a strikeout victim back in the second.
- 1:01:37Jim Palmer is pitching and he and Kofax are matching zeroes at each other.
- 1:01:46Last ball, Bell Heights, taken for a strike.
- 1:01:52Bob Addy of the Washington Post has just been elected
- 1:01:56National Chairman of the very great Baseball Writers Association of America
- 1:02:00and that's up on the message board.
- 1:02:02No balls, one strike.
- 1:02:05Little hopper on one bounce to Palmer, he throws him out.
- 1:02:13Now, Luke Johnson who hit a double off the end of the bat in the right field
- 1:02:18back in the second inning when the Dodgers really had their best bet right.
- 1:02:23Bob Addy is a very wonderful writer and very widely read.
- 1:02:28A lot of people perhaps don't know it that he is married to perhaps one of the greatest tennis players of all time in this falling bet.
- 1:02:42The outfield is around the left of this right hand batting,
- 1:02:44Luke Johnson getting his first series hit back in the second.
- 1:02:48That's a foul back overhead, strike one.
- 1:03:00Nothing in on the count.
- 1:03:04Two down, Dodger fourth, Baltimore and Los Angeles scoreless.
- 1:03:09Palmer sends him a breaking pitch to the outside, just got out a little too much,
- 1:03:14does not like the ball and gets a new one from the Platum Fire Ness to Shylock.
- 1:03:18A ball on strike one count to Luke Johnson.
- 1:03:25Jim has the sign from Etcheverrin in the 1-1.
- 1:03:28Wide ball left center, that has some wood to glare his back door
- 1:03:31and appears to have it measured in front of the 390 mark on the warning track.
- 1:03:35He hit the ball about 370 feet, but it was a big old can of corn for young Paul Blair.
- 1:03:40Three up and three down at the end of four, Baltimore nothing, Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:03:50A great new cigarette is born, a new filter cigarette whose very name stands for flavor.
- 1:03:58New Camel Filters.
- 1:04:08New Camel Filters.
- 1:04:11This is the one born rich, rich in taste with that big camel head start on flavor.
- 1:04:18Now that great camel heritage of real taste comes to you in a great new filter cigarette.
- 1:04:25No other can compare in flavor and quality to new Camel Filters.
- 1:04:30This is the one you'll want to try.
- 1:04:33Try Camel Filters, the one born rich.
- 1:04:47In contrast to yesterday's Wild and Willie game, it took almost an hour and a half for the first two innings
- 1:04:52as pitching changes were made and walks and home runs and things like that occurred.
- 1:04:56Now through four innings of watching Copax and Palmer duel,
- 1:05:00neither one who wastes any time bringing it to you.
- 1:05:03Just 50 minutes at elapsed.
- 1:05:07Mood Powell flies to right field and hit the ball probably harder against Copax in this game so far
- 1:05:12than anybody, takes a fastball outside ball and he backs it fairly up there toward the warning track in right field.
- 1:05:20He's backed a lot of fellas up.
- 1:05:23And then had them crane their neck a little bit to see what else it was going.
- 1:05:26A ball, 2-0.
- 1:05:35Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:05:37Outfield straight away, very deep.
- 1:05:40Ball free outside.
- 1:05:42Copax missed with a breaking ball that time.
- 1:05:45And it was a harder throwing curve than he hasn't been throwing that lollipop curve is,
- 1:05:49which will turn this crowd into ecstasies when he does.
- 1:05:53He just gives you that big old dewdrop inner for a strike.
- 1:05:57He really turns the fans on.
- 1:05:593-0 pitch.
- 1:06:01Strike call, fastball up the knees.
- 1:06:033-1. Powell stepping out now, checking Billy Hunter.
- 1:06:08Third base coach for Baltimore.
- 1:06:123-1 delivery from Copax.
- 1:06:15Lined out for left field and Johnson coming on, can't get it, falls in front of him for a base hit.
- 1:06:20That's the second hit and the first real hit off Sandy Copax.
- 1:06:28So Boog Powell takes Sandy to the opposite field.
- 1:06:32And now Dave Johnson in.
- 1:06:35You mentioned Boog going to the opposite field with Sandy Copax.
- 1:06:38One night in Fenway Park, Boog Powell hit three home runs into the screen above the left field wall at Fenway.
- 1:06:44I think there isn't a park can hold him when he gets some wood to it.
- 1:06:49Johnson shortened up his own a bunt and takes high ball on.
- 1:06:57That brought Parker from first and Gilliam from third in quickly.
- 1:07:01Gilliam remains up at third to the right hand batting, second baseman.
- 1:07:04So it's 0-1 in this one.
- 1:07:08He bunts a pop-up and Wes Parker is all set to catch it and Roseboro one-hits it up over Parker's coconut.
- 1:07:18So the put-out will go to Roseboro much to the surprise of Wes Parker.
- 1:07:23I bet for just a split second Parker really panicked.
- 1:07:26You know, where is it? Where is it? Roseboro had that ice cream going right there.
- 1:07:30Oh, Blair.
- 1:07:32Oh, Blair in now. He lined to the right fielder, Ron Fairlis.
- 1:07:42They'll play him to full. He's a right-hand batter.
- 1:07:46He pops one foul out of play. Strike one.
- 1:08:00Just getting in on the broadcast, there has been one real threat and it was a Dodger threat.
- 1:08:05It occurred in the second inning when Ron Fairlis won.
- 1:08:08Johnson doubled a shallow right with Fairlis, of course, taking third.
- 1:08:12But then Palmer bore down, popped up Roseboro.
- 1:08:15They intentionally passed Parker to load the bases and knocked Kopacz to the second baseman Johnson.
- 1:08:20And that was the threat, the only real threat that has really been in this game.
- 1:08:27Blair swings, he misses, and oh and two.
- 1:08:33Baltimore has had just a mile of them, but semi-ran themselves out of it in the fourth.
- 1:08:40Four-two were down when it happened and a Dodger error occurred.
- 1:08:45Blair fly ball left center, Willie Davis, bordering against that sun, drifting off to his right.
- 1:08:51He's down and he loses the ball, or he either loses it in the sun and who comes to third and into second will go, Paul Blair.
- 1:09:01I told you he was bordering against that sun.
- 1:09:04And as he does and looks up against the white shirts here in the upper deck above us,
- 1:09:08it is obvious from the way he played the ball that he lost it all together.
- 1:09:15And it fell off to his left and they will charge him with a two-base error.
- 1:09:20That is the second Dodger error.
- 1:09:28When you lose a ball, that you have it pretty well beaten in Chuck, and then you don't know it where it is anymore,
- 1:09:33your tendency is to get your head out of the way because you can get hit and that's just one of the breaks of the game.
- 1:09:39Bob, one of the breaks in the game yesterday was the clutch catch by Russ Snyder in the second inning of a drive-in by John Rosenthal.
- 1:09:45And talking to Russ after the game, Austin is coming to the mound right now to talk with his pitcher Coltbacks and also Maury Wills.
- 1:09:53We talked to Russ after the game and the same thing happened to Russ.
- 1:09:56It just happened a moment ago to Willie Davis.
- 1:09:58He saw it momentarily, lost it, and then picked it up again at the last moment.
- 1:10:02So it was just a fortunate break.
- 1:10:04This night it was able to come off with that play, an unfortunate break here for Willie Davis.
- 1:10:09Well, this NBC broadcast of the World Series is the most popular sports show on the air.
- 1:10:14More viewers see the World Series than any other sports spectacle.
- 1:10:26Austin has gone back to the dugout and Andy Etchibarron will step in with Oriole runners at second and third with one out at back to Bob Prince.
- 1:10:36Hang in there Chuck.
- 1:10:37Now let's see how the Dodgers play it.
- 1:10:39They're kind of come up halfway in their infield.
- 1:10:42Etchibarron takes high ball on.
- 1:10:44Now there are a lot of possibilities riding here that Austin said, look, Palmer is the man to do up next.
- 1:10:49The base is open.
- 1:10:50Pitch carefully to him.
- 1:10:51If you can get him to go for a bad ball and get out of it, okay.
- 1:10:55And so they bring that infield up parkway, not all the way.
- 1:10:59Swinging into this one and one and I'll tell you right now, Etchibarron was trying to hit that ball into right field.
- 1:11:09A great break for the Baltimore Orioles on a two base error, sending Powell to third and Blair to second base with one away.
- 1:11:16And Kofax now has his work really cut out for him, although the game is yet scoreless.
- 1:11:21One ball, one strike.
- 1:11:22Swing and a miss, second to one and two.
- 1:11:33Sandy's had a lot of practice situations like this.
- 1:11:37So he's not frightened of it, I'll guarantee you that.
- 1:11:41A ball and two strikes.
- 1:11:44Runners at second and third, one out on the top of the fifth of pitch to Etchibarron.
- 1:11:48High, two-two.
- 1:11:50Move Powell right off of the base, hit to left.
- 1:11:53Johnson trying to bunt and he just goes to show you he wasn't successful.
- 1:11:57You don't know how things might have turned around had that play occurred.
- 1:12:01And a near mix up there by the Dodgers.
- 1:12:03Two-two pitch.
- 1:12:04Etchibarron, a fly ball into left center.
- 1:12:06Willie Davis coming up for it.
- 1:12:08Move Powell is tagging.
- 1:12:09Willie Davis is there and he drops the ball again.
- 1:12:12And they throw the ball to third and it gets away from third.
- 1:12:15Blair comes around third, he'll score.
- 1:12:17And in to third goes Etchibarron.
- 1:12:31Etchibarron hit a fly ball into shallow left center field.
- 1:12:35When Willie Davis came in, Move Powell tagged.
- 1:12:37It would have been a fearful collision if the play had the catch been made
- 1:12:41and the throw into the plate to Roseboro occurred.
- 1:12:44But Willie Davis might have tried to throw it before he got it.
- 1:12:47I don't know, but he dropped it.
- 1:12:49In to score Powell, coming in to score Blair with all his speed.
- 1:12:52And they had a play on him when Willie Davis picked the ball up.
- 1:12:55He then threw to third but threw high.
- 1:12:57So it's conceivable he's going to get a double error on the play.
- 1:13:00And his third error in this inning, which is a record that he doesn't want.
- 1:13:05The most errors in an inning he now owns, three, in World Series play.
- 1:13:10And Baltimore leads 2-0.
- 1:13:13And there still is only one man out and the batter is Palmer with Etchibarron at third.
- 1:13:18And the infield for the Dodgers now pulls up.
- 1:13:21Ball high.
- 1:13:27I don't know yet whether they will rule an RBI.
- 1:13:32And this is something we will have to ascertain.
- 1:13:35And that is why we have not said whether Etchibarron gets an RBI
- 1:13:38or whether it's an error all the way.
- 1:13:40And that's an official scorer's decision.
- 1:13:43Palmer takes high, ball two, 2-0.
- 1:13:45We will get that for you.
- 1:13:48Nonetheless, Baltimore leading 2-0 on a fearful breakthrough of the Dodger errors.
- 1:13:55Three by Willie Davis.
- 1:13:58And none can feel more sorry for them than the announcers right here
- 1:14:01because we know exactly that his heart is aching.
- 1:14:05Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:14:07Etchibarron at third to pitch to Palmer.
- 1:14:10Swing and a miss, strike one.
- 1:14:25Two balls, one strike to Jim Palmer.
- 1:14:30He cuts at this one and it's 2-2.
- 1:14:32We popped the third base in the third inning.
- 1:14:40Etchibarron would get to first on an error and the third on another error.
- 1:14:45And there is no RBI involved.
- 1:14:50Two balls, two strikes to Palmer.
- 1:14:52Dodger infield remains up.
- 1:14:54Here's the pitch.
- 1:14:55Palmer takes high, ball three.
- 1:14:59So you will score Boog Powell on the error, the first error in this situation by Willie Davis.
- 1:15:09And you'll score Blair on the second error by Willie Davis, which was a throwing error.
- 1:15:15And put Etchibarron at third, striking out Jim Palmer.
- 1:15:21So there are two down.
- 1:15:23Willie, let me know what you're thinking.
- 1:15:43The infield is now back.
- 1:15:46That was the second strikeout for Kofax.
- 1:15:49Here's Aparicio, takes a curve ball strike. He's one for two.
- 1:16:03Now back, strike two.
- 1:16:05Actually, Baltimore has received the benefit of five outs in this inning,
- 1:16:09and Kofax is struggling to get the sixth.
- 1:16:17No balls, two strikes to Aparicio with Etchibarron at third.
- 1:16:27Two-nothing Baltimore on the top of the fifth.
- 1:16:29A curve ball beats Powell at the plate.
- 1:16:33Now sir, it goes without saying,
- 1:16:36Willie Davis, if he could dig a hole and get in there and hide for a while,
- 1:16:39he would, you couldn't blame him.
- 1:16:40Nobody likes to wear horns except certain four-footed animals.
- 1:16:45And it's just one of those things where he lost the ball, I'm sure,
- 1:16:49The first time against the Sun, and then dropped it after a hard run here,
- 1:16:53and then had the misfortune to pick it up and throw it over the head of Gilliam.
- 1:16:56A ball inside, one and two.
- 1:16:59The official score has therefore ruled no run batted in.
- 1:17:03Three errors on the play.
- 1:17:07A ball, two strikes to Aparicio.
- 1:17:10Top of the fifth.
- 1:17:11The pitch, a curve into the dirt, blocked nicely by Roseboro.
- 1:17:16He went right out and smothered that.
- 1:17:18Good catchers on it over here in curve ball into the dirt will roll right out and smother it
- 1:17:22because they want to control on the spin of that ball and which way it's going to hop.
- 1:17:26They're never certain, so they just smother it, keeping it in front of them.
- 1:17:31Ball two, strike two.
- 1:17:38Now Copac's ready.
- 1:17:39Two-two pitch, foul back.
- 1:17:48Chuck Thompson, Aparicio seems to be up there just guarding the plate.
- 1:17:51Has he got a lot of bulldog in him with the bat?
- 1:17:54He is.
- 1:17:55He'll protect that plate all the time and will, for the most part,
- 1:17:57as you pointed out, try to go the other way.
- 1:18:01Ball two, strike two.
- 1:18:02Two down, two runs in.
- 1:18:04Etchiburn, runner at third.
- 1:18:06Copac's working.
- 1:18:07Here's the pitch.
- 1:18:09Curve ball hit sharply inside third for a base hit.
- 1:18:11Etchiburn will score.
- 1:18:13Aparicio is around first and on his way into second base with a double.
- 1:18:17Lined it inside, give him, down into the corner pocket, and Baltimore leads 3-0.
- 1:18:34So we have our first run batted in in this game, and it goes to Aparicio, who is 2-3.
- 1:18:41Got a curve ball inside and gave it a good ride.
- 1:18:45The batter is Bluffery.
- 1:18:47Fly to center, pop the short.
- 1:18:53Copac kicks high and there's a high fly ball into shallow right coming up for it fast fairly,
- 1:18:58going back Parker in the fever.
- 1:19:00And it's gone fairly near the right field line, making the catch that retires the sack.
- 1:19:06So for Baltimore, three runs, two hits, three Dodger errors, and one Baltimore Oriole spender.
- 1:19:12At the end of four and a half innings of play, Baltimore 3, Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:19:25This is the warehouse.
- 1:19:28Some pretty good beers have served time here.
- 1:19:31There are people who think nothing can happen to beer in a place like this,
- 1:19:36but this beer becomes forgotten beer.
- 1:19:40Pushed around from warehouse to warehouse, stored, loaded, trucked, unloaded, stored, loaded, shipped, unloaded, stored.
- 1:19:54Carlin won't condemn beer to a long sentence in the warehouse.
- 1:19:58Carlin built eight nearby breweries to get our black label beer to the people while it's still fresh,
- 1:20:05while there's still life to it.
- 1:20:08Carlin believes building a brewery is better.
- 1:20:11Anything is better than leaving our beer in the warehouse.
- 1:20:18Well, ladies and gentlemen, we are set now to go into the Dodger fifth inning
- 1:20:23of the Baltimore Orioles out in front in a rather bizarre third inning, fifth inning, in which they scored three runs.
- 1:20:29Now my pleasure to turn the microphone over to the veteran voice of the Baltimore Orioles, Chuck Thompson. Chuck?
- 1:20:35Thank you very much, Bob Prince, and good afternoon, everyone.
- 1:20:38It'll be John Roseborough to lead off in the last half of the fifth inning,
- 1:20:42and the Dodgers are again facing the problem they faced yesterday,
- 1:20:46a problem they faced many times with great success throughout the year, the problem of catch-up baseball.
- 1:20:52Roseborough popped a shortstop in the second inning.
- 1:20:55Left-hander hit it, and Palmer looks down to Etchibarron for the side,
- 1:21:00and we're ready to go to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:21:02Pitch, strike call.
- 1:21:13Palmer rocks over the rubber. The right-hander's pitch cut on.
- 1:21:16Fly ball well hit center field. Blair backpedaling, backpedaling, stops, looks up, and makes the catch,
- 1:21:20and we have one down and we pause now, 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:21:25Pure Jamaica ginger is the only kind of ginger that goes into Saratoga ginger ale.
- 1:21:31Why? To make a ginger ale that's different, one you can drink by itself as well as a mixer.
- 1:21:37Take a sip, and it's mellow, gingery, without snapping at you.
- 1:21:43Even the bubbles are different, high spirited, but long-lasting and never overwhelming.
- 1:21:49People who make Saratoga vichy just can't bear to make a ginger ale like everybody else.
- 1:21:55WGY, WGFM, Schenectady.
- 1:21:58Chest protection of plate out by our Shylock.
- 1:22:02Glance down, hitting with the leg, and he apparently is okay.
- 1:22:07One strike, two West Parker.
- 1:22:10Swing and a high foul, maybe out of play, yes, off the third-base side, two strikes to Parker.
- 1:22:32The right-hander's next offering is high and away to Parker, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:22:39Parker, a south-faw hitter, a switch hitter, and a left-hander against Palmer.
- 1:22:45Center fielder Blair shades him a bit toward the alley and left center of the pitch.
- 1:22:48Cranking ball is inside, and the count, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:22:58One out and then out.
- 1:23:05Palmer to the line at the 2-2 pitch, drive for a base hit out between Powell, the first baseman, and Johnson, the second baseman.
- 1:23:13Right field single for West Parker, the second, the base hit of the ball game for the Dodgers.
- 1:23:18The first one was a broken bat double to the right field off the bat of Luke Johnson.
- 1:23:22And now getting a great hand, one of the greats of baseball, Sandy Koufax, this will be a second turn to the plate,
- 1:23:29in the second knee pop to the second baseman Dave Johnson.
- 1:23:33The score in the last half of the fifth inning of game number two, Baltimore 3, Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:23:41Powell moves into hold with a base runner Parker at first base, and Palmer is ready.
- 1:23:46First pitch to Koufax, high fly ball hit toward right field, coming into the ball right field at Frank Robinson.
- 1:23:52Still waiting, waiting, he's got it, and that's the second out of the inning.
- 1:23:55Koufax retired in a fly ball to shallow right.
- 1:23:59Two down now, and here is Maury Wills, and he'll take a little time getting up there in order to let Koufax get back to the dugout and maybe get the feed up.
- 1:24:09Maury Wills has bounced to the pitcher and grounded to the second baseman in two turns this afternoon.
- 1:24:14In yesterday's contest, Maury was 0-3, struck out twice and grounded a second, but reached twice via the base on balls.
- 1:24:26Now he's playing about a step behind the bag to the base runner, Wes Parker, at first. Wills waits the first pitch.
- 1:24:34Swing ground ball to the glove side of second baseman Johnson, he's there, makes a pick up, a throw on the first inside, and that's it for Maury Wills.
- 1:24:40And for the Dodgers in the fifth inning, no runs, one base hit, no bird errors, and a man is left.
- 1:24:45At the end of five, complete the score, Baltimore 3, Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:24:50Here he is again with another story, our favorite umpire Nick Pro.
- 1:24:54One night in Pittsburgh, a second-to-third baseman known as the Ape Man on a kind of not a very dainty performer with the glove, lets a ground ball bounce off his chin.
- 1:25:03It raises such a lump that the next day he cannot shave.
- 1:25:07I hear of this and offer him my new Gelathec Matic Razor, which he graciously declines.
- 1:25:12Beat it, he says, go feed your guy, dog.
- 1:25:16Ape Man, I reply, the Gelathec Matic Razor just out has the lightest touch in shaving.
- 1:25:22Six super stainless steel edges are coiled and sealed inside a cartridge, like film and a camera.
- 1:25:28Each edge lasts about a week.
- 1:25:30Then, flipper lever and a new edge locks in place.
- 1:25:33The Gelathec Matic ends blade handling forever.
- 1:25:38Well, the Ape Man tries it.
- 1:25:40He gets a perfect shave from the Gelathec Matic and does not even cut his bump.
- 1:25:45Umpire says to me, you are a humanitarian.
- 1:25:49Ape Man, I reply, shave that on the field and you're out of the game.
- 1:25:54They are regressing the skin of the infield at Dodger Stadium as the Orioles are ready to come to bat on the top of the sixth inning with Frank Robinson in the leadoff.
- 1:26:05And one of the nice gestures from the spectators here at the Dodger Stadium occurred a moment ago as the unfortunate Willie Davis took center field.
- 1:26:14He gave him a fine, warm welcome as he came out that way, and as Bob Prince mentioned a moment ago,
- 1:26:19no one in the world could feel any worse than Judge Willie for the unfortunate errors of the previous inning.
- 1:26:27Well, it will be Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson booed Powell against Sandy Koufax in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:26:34Frank has flied to left and walked.
- 1:26:40The five inning totals here in game number two at the end of five, the Orioles three runs on three base hits.
- 1:26:46They have not committed an error. The Dodgers no runs, two hits, and four errors.
- 1:26:51Incidentally, the Orioles led the league in the fewest errors in 1966, and they've done that three times in the last four years.
- 1:27:02Here's Frank Robinson. Koufax fires, curve ball drops in, strike is called.
- 1:27:18Another one this one misses in the count even now at one and one.
- 1:27:31Koufax to the move with a one-one to Frank Robinson.
- 1:27:34Now the breaking ball high on the count, two balls, one strike.
- 1:27:41Dodger outfield, cut well around toward left and very deep to the power hitting Frank Robinson.
- 1:27:46Two-one pitch. He took a fastball high on a bit outside on the count now, three and one.
- 1:28:02Three-one to Frank Robinson.
- 1:28:04Swing and a missed strike two. He didn't hold back a little bit. Oh, God, Frank.
- 1:28:20And a big one, three-two to Robinson. Koufax delivers. Here's a foul ball out of play. And the count holds three and two.
- 1:28:35Frank Robinson, the first triple-crown winner since Mickey Mantle won it for the Yankees in 1956.
- 1:28:43He's adding average home runs RBIs. Three-two pitch to Frank. High fly ball headed toward the alley right center.
- 1:28:51Racing back to center field on the right field, still going, still going. And it'll be the right fielder to drop in front of him.
- 1:28:56It dropped in front of the right fielder fairly. Frank Robinson is around second, the leggings are free.
- 1:29:00There isn't a throw toward third base. It comes toward the plate instead.
- 1:29:05Well, Willie Davis and Ron Fairley met on the warning track about 390 feet away in the alley in deep right center.
- 1:29:12And the ball just dropped right in front of the right fielder, Ron Fairley, a bounce through.
- 1:29:17And Frank Robinson opens with a triple.
- 1:29:27Frank Robinson has opened the Oriole half of the sixth inning with a booming triple into deep right center field.
- 1:29:33And Brooks Robinson steps in.
- 1:29:41The Dodger infield now played up very shallow on the first base side.
- 1:29:45A couple of steps back on the third base side. Pitch is cut on high.
- 1:29:48Fly ball down the first base side foul. Getting chases.
- 1:29:50Wes Parker over near the box seat railing. Reaches up and makes a candy catch.
- 1:29:55A fine catch by Wes Parker near the box seat railing beyond the Oriole dugout on the first base side of Dodger Stadium.
- 1:30:01Good defensive play from Wes.
- 1:30:06Frank Robinson holding third on the play. And now the batter, Boog Powell, who has flying to right and single to left field.
- 1:30:20Maury Wells at short is about a step off the infield grass.
- 1:30:23Third baseman Gilliam about even with a bag, maybe a little bit deeper than that.
- 1:30:26Latever about two steps back off the infield grass.
- 1:30:29And Parker maybe a step beyond the bag and wide of it at first. Pitch to Powell. High. All one.
- 1:30:35Outfield deep and just about straight away to Boog.
- 1:30:46Come back to the move. The one-nothing pitch to Powell. High again. Ball two. Two and O to Boog.
- 1:31:07And the two-nothing to Boog Powell. High. Fly ball down the left field side.
- 1:31:11Fading it may be a foul ball will be and now out of play.
- 1:31:20Two and one to count to Boog. Orioles three. Dodgers nothing. We're at the top of the sixth inning of game number two.
- 1:31:36Captured the first game here at Dodger Stadium. Five to two yesterday afternoon.
- 1:31:41Two under Powell. Five foul ball out of play off the third base side.
- 1:31:45And the count now levels of two and two.
- 1:32:10Co-Facts for the move. The two-two to Powell. Breaking ball high. The count now fills three and two.
- 1:32:19The Birds have come up now with four base sits.
- 1:32:23Co-Facts has registered two strikeouts.
- 1:32:30All three of the Oriole runs, of course, under.
- 1:32:36Three-two the count to Boog Powell. Co-Facts ready. The arm down in the pitch.
- 1:32:41Breaking ball swung on. Line drive base hit. Out toward the alley and right center field.
- 1:32:44Here comes Frank Robinson home with a fourth. Oriole run of the afternoon and Powell has picked up his second hit of the day against the left-hander, Co-Facts, at his first run batted in.
- 1:32:59And it's now Baltimore four at the Dodgers nothing. And here is Dave Johnson who popped a second in the second inning and attempting to foul out to catch a Johnny Roseborough in the fifth.
- 1:33:13Parker moves into hold with a big man Powell at first base. Johnson waits.
- 1:33:20Sandy is ready. His pitch high. Pops out of the middle of Roseborough but he kept it around the plate and Powell is not able to advance.
- 1:33:30Ron Taranosky is throwing a Dodger bullpen right now. Taranosky.
- 1:33:45And it's now the one-nothing pitch to Dave Johnson swinging a foul out of play. Ball at a strike.
- 1:33:59Well, the Dodgers this afternoon with the Orioles again smash an attendance mark with 55,947.
- 1:34:09One-one to Dave Johnson swinging another foul out of play. And it's now the ball two strikes.
- 1:34:34One away. Powell, the letter at first base, a count of the ball two strikes to Dave Johnson.
- 1:34:39High foul again out of play behind the plate. And the count of the mole.
- 1:35:08The Kofax is ready. The one ball, two strike pitch. Drive for a base hit.
- 1:35:12Beyond the diving first base from Parker out of the right field. Powell is around second base coming out of third.
- 1:35:16Here's the throw coming to third from Ron Fairley. Powell is in safety. The ball gets away from the third base.
- 1:35:19The backing up is Kofax. Down to second goes Dave Johnson. And the Birds have runners at second and third.
- 1:35:27Powell takes third and the line single in the right field off the bat of Dave Johnson.
- 1:35:31Johnson races down to second base on the throw to third that was off the mark and carom by Gilliam.
- 1:35:38But Kofax was right behind him to back up the play. Sandy, however, had no chance to make a play on Dave Johnson moving into second base.
- 1:35:46The ruling will be an error, a throwing error to the right fielder Ron Fairley.
- 1:35:50And the Dodgers have come up with their fifth error in the game.
- 1:35:58One out. Oriole runners at second and third. Paul Blair is the batter.
- 1:36:02And they are going to give him the intentional base on balls with first base open and one down.
- 1:36:10An intentional walk to Paul Blair will now load the bases for the Dodgers, for the Orioles against the Dodgers, and bring to the plate Andy Echevarri.
- 1:36:22Well, the most errors for one club in a nine inning World Series game, six by three clubs.
- 1:36:28And the Dodgers now have hung up five. Bob?
- 1:36:33Chuck, Chuck, three unearned runs in the fifth inning and of course one here that will be earned, the one that Robinson just scored,
- 1:36:39a ball that fell in between two outfielders that appeared to be catchable. They'll be discussing that one quite a while.
- 1:36:45Co-packs can't get away from five errors and there's no question about it that's an awful burden to have to carry around.
- 1:36:52Here now is Echevarri with the bases loaded. Ball one is too high to Andy.
- 1:36:57Echevarri was called out on strikes in the third inning and then he was involved in the triple errors of the fifth inning.
- 1:37:10It's coming down to Andy, is high again, ball two.
- 1:37:25Bases loaded, one out, on a count of two balls, no strikes to the right hand batting rookie Oriole catcher, Echevarri. Co-packs throws, five all three.
- 1:37:40And the burden of five errors, as Bob Prince pointed out, is a tremendous load for anyone to carry, even Sandy Copax.
- 1:37:50Three balls, no strikes, the count to Echevarri.
- 1:37:58Player at first, Johnson at second, Powell at third. It's a three-hunting pitch. Right down Broadway as the strike is called.
- 1:38:07Echevarri under wraps, taking all the way.
- 1:38:19Three-one pitch, swing, ground ball hit toward the third base and he's got it. The play will be to the plate, that's one out.
- 1:38:24Now on to first base, in time to get the double play. The Dodgers got it just what they wanted.
- 1:38:30The first end of the double play from Gilliam for the plate to Rosebara. Rosebara wheeled the first base to Parker to get the other end and Echevarri and the Orioles are stopped after one run.
- 1:38:41In this inning, on three they sit. One Dodger error and two are left. And at the end of five and a half innings to play the score now, Baltimore for the Dodgers nothing.

- 1:39:55You know, college baseball is getting better every year.
- 1:40:03One reason may be found in the five summer leagues operating exclusively for college players, which provided spirited competition in various areas last summer.
- 1:40:12The major leagues contributed $75,000 to these leagues, which operate under strict NCAA regulations to protect the players amateur standing. Chuck?
- 1:40:22Okay, Bob, here's Gilliam leading off, and Jim Palmer's first offering is a called strike one.
- 1:40:28With the very unusual and rather bizarre errors that have occurred in the game, there's a great tendency to overlook the fact that Palmer is pitching a two-hit shutout.
- 1:40:37Here's the ground ball bouncing toward second baseman Dave Johnson, a one-handed spear, the throw to first, and that's it for Gilliam. He's retired.
- 1:40:44Ground ball to second baseman Johnson.
- 1:40:48Down the batter is Willie Davis, and the applause will drown out the boos.
- 1:40:56Willie has twice faced Jim Palmer both times, and has gone down swinging.
- 1:41:04The sportsmanship of this World Series crowd is a magnificent thing to the apartment.
- 1:41:11Here is Jim Palmer's first pitch to Willie. A strike is called.
- 1:41:23Now the one-strike pitch. Palmer deals, missed inside with a breaking ball, one and one.
- 1:41:37One out and none on. Dodgers batting bottom of the sixth inning. Orioles four, Dodgers nothing. Palmer's next offering is low, and the count now, two and one.
- 1:41:58The two-one pitch to Davis. Swing and a foul on the screen, and the count is even now at two and two.
- 1:42:17Oriole infield is cut around to the first base side against the south ball swings of Willie.
- 1:42:24Palmer to the move, two-two pitch. Ground ball popped off the first base side. Dave Johnson, the second baseman, trance, throws on to first.
- 1:42:29Justin, trying to get Willie Davis, that ball, threatened a bad hop right over the head of the Orioles second baseman.
- 1:42:34He had to make another one, and it's stabbed to the ball and threw him out. Two up and two down.
- 1:42:41You know, Chuck, being in the league, naturally the national league, where there is a tremendous amount of great second base play,
- 1:42:48and observing the play of young Johnson out there, and of course Lefebvre, for the Dodgers, Johnson appears to have very excellent hands for a youngster,
- 1:42:54and looks like a real great start at that position for years to come.
- 1:42:58Here is Ron Fairley, swings and a long drive foul out the right field side, and out of play, strike one.
- 1:43:04Bob, that's exactly the case. The Orioles gambled on this youngster, and traded away one of the five second basemen in the American League,
- 1:43:11Jerry Adair, and put this youngster in there, and he never faltered. One strike. McAltoo, Fairley.
- 1:43:19He walked and flied to center in two previous trips. The pitch. Curve ball. Strike is called. Beautiful looking pitch.
- 1:43:38Two out, not on. Palmer to the move. Breaking ball just missed. He tried to curve again. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:43:53The Dodger hits off Palmer, and then a broken back double by Lou Johnson, and a single by Parker. Pitch. Just inside, two and two.
- 1:44:11Brewer and Paranoski are throwing the Dodger both down. Fairley has stepped out. Mopped the brow.
- 1:44:25Two-two pitch coming. High ball three. Full countdown to the Dodger right fielder, Ron Fairley.
- 1:44:44Palmer ready, and the right hand is pitched. Swing and a miss. He struck him out, and the Dodgers are three up and three down
- 1:44:50in the last half of the sixth inning at the end of sixth complete the score. Baltimore four, Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:45:00A great new filter cigarette is born. Born with the name Camel. New Camel filters.
- 1:45:15The one born rich. New Camel filters. This is the one born rich. Rich in taste. With that big Camel head start on flavor.
- 1:45:31Now that great Camel heritage of real taste comes to you in a great new filter cigarette. No other can compare in flavor.
- 1:45:40No other can compare in quality to new Camel filters. This is the one you'll want to try.
- 1:45:48New Camel filters. The one born rich.
- 1:45:59A Dodger pitching change. Ron Paranoski coming on. We'll tell you more about him and the aspects of the relieving of
- 1:46:06COFAX under tenuous circumstances in one moment. Right now we pass 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:46:13You've grown up around here. Chances are you take Saratoga Vichy for granted. Well don't.
- 1:46:19What you're being so blase about happens to be one of the most extraordinary natural products in all the world.
- 1:46:26People send for it from all over. Both for its curious taste and for that remarkably long lived carbonation the Vichy people are always talking about.
- 1:46:35Saratoga Vichy the only mixer we know of that people built a city just to be near. WGY WGFM Schenectady.
- 1:46:48Coming in for his second of series appearance. Chuck this kid's rising out of the pack.
- 1:46:52Walter Alston is perhaps taking COFAX out of the game knowing his bullpen is sufficient to do the job he wants done.
- 1:46:59And we'll come again another day if the series is to go beyond four. And there are some things that we can talk about from time to time.
- 1:47:06But this young man standing in here right now Mr. Palmer kind of riding tall on that satellite.
- 1:47:12He certainly is Bob Prince and as a hitter this afternoon Palmer's popped the third and struck out.
- 1:47:18Now he looks at the left hand of Paranowski into the move and the first pitch. Kurt ball drops in strike is called.
- 1:47:33Here's a ball just inside Palmer up around the letters.
- 1:47:38COFAX this afternoon went six innings allowed six base hits struck out two walked to one of those intentional allowed one earned run. Pitch.
- 1:47:48Little bit low and the count now two and one. Yesterday we saw Ron Paranowski for the final two innings.
- 1:47:55And he allowed two base hits. Didn't walk a batter didn't strike anybody out nor did he allow a run.
- 1:48:03Strike called to Palmer two and two.
- 1:48:15Two balls two strikes to Palmer.
- 1:48:21Paranowski ready is the pitch swing and a ground ball hit right to a third base from Gilliam. He gloves it the throw out of first and we've got the first out of the inning and Palmer hustling every step of the way made it a little bit closer than we thought it would be.
- 1:48:37And out here is Aparicio with two hits and three trips this afternoon against COFAX looking now to Paranowski.
- 1:48:48Luisa's also knocked in one of the four Oriole runs.
- 1:48:55Paranowski's pitch strike called covered the outer portion around the knees.
- 1:49:00Aparicio had a leg get an infield hit the deep short of the first inning and a double between Gilliam and the bag at third in the fifth inning.
- 1:49:08One strike fits common inside low one and one.
- 1:49:25Now the one offering to Aparicio outside and Louie ran the hands up the bat is that maybe he had a thought of a buck took it all away two balls one strike one out and then on.
- 1:49:43Two one pitch to Aparicio swing fly ball headed out of the left center field moving on the ball Willie Davis.
- 1:49:59And I'm sure I don't have to enlarge or amplify on the great burst of applause that greeted that catch.
- 1:50:06Brewer and Regan are now throwing in the Dodger both then two down and none on.
- 1:50:11Here is Kurt Bleffery left hand swinging left fielder against COFAX and three trips fly to center pop the short fly to right.
- 1:50:28Little conversation going on around the plate it perhaps concerns whether or not Bleffery is in or out of the box his rear foot is right on the line.
- 1:50:37First pitch good curve in strike call the Bleffery.
- 1:50:45Dodger outfield the Bleffery kind of spread out guarding all the exits if he might hit the ball to any and all fields.
- 1:50:50Paranowski deals he missed low and outside one ball one strike.
- 1:51:02Now the one one pitch breaking ball low and a count two and one.
- 1:51:08Well they say in baseball always expect the unexpected but who could expect five Dodger errors three in one inning by one man.
- 1:51:23Two one pitch to Bleffery swing ground foul pumped up the first base side speared by Gene Woodley Oriole first base coach.
- 1:51:32Check what these batters would do if the game of golf hadn't been invented.
- 1:51:37They all seem to wear golf gloves now on the one of the hands when they go up there to the plate.
- 1:51:44It's only been a few years ago that that tar spade towel came into existence to pitch swing and a ground foul dribbling up the first base side.
- 1:51:52Two and two and Woodley fielding a foul.
- 1:52:00Gene the hitting coach of the Orioles and he's done a great job particularly with a lot of the youngsters on the Baltimore club.
- 1:52:08Gene feels one of the most important things you can teach a young hitter is to learn the strike zone.
- 1:52:25And the two two pitch to Bleffery swing and a miss he struck him out of the birds a three up and three down and their half of the seventh inning at the end of six and one half score.
- 1:52:33Baltimore four Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:52:36We asked the nastiest man in the world to ask some nasty questions about our beer.
- 1:52:43Go ahead nasty.
- 1:52:45What is all this eight brewery jazz.
- 1:52:47We're trying to get Carling Black Label beer into people's hands while it's still fresh and lively.
- 1:52:52Don't con me beer is supposed to be old.
- 1:52:54That depends on where it gets old in the aging tanks good but in the can or in the bottle not good.
- 1:53:00There well beer slowly surely acquires and I'm beer like taste brew masters call this taste ready.
- 1:53:09People call it flat.
- 1:53:10So what do you do drink all your beer before it leaves the brewery.
- 1:53:13We brought our breweries closer to the people this way Black Label spends less time in warehouses and trucks.
- 1:53:19Hey my brother drives a truck.
- 1:53:21You've got something against truck.
- 1:53:22We love trucks.
- 1:53:23We love trains.
- 1:53:24We love boats.
- 1:53:25We love planes.
- 1:53:26We just want our beer to spend less time in them.
- 1:53:29It'll taste better.
- 1:53:30Say when did you guys stop beating your wives.
- 1:53:36Paul staff World Series six packs.
- 1:53:39You know Chuck Thompson if the Dodgers are to lose this game and it's Baltimore four Dodgers nothing as we go to the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:53:47The game is not over but should they and then go to Baltimore trailing by two games in the World Series.
- 1:53:53They'll have a couple of things going that will hurt them maybe in that they'll not be familiar with the Baltimore ballpark.
- 1:54:00But they will for the better part of them anyhow be quite familiar with Claude Osteen who will pitch against them in game three.
- 1:54:07Very true Bob.
- 1:54:08Here's Jim Palmer to the move on the first pitch coming down to the fever is a called strike one.
- 1:54:13And Bob the Orioles had more than a little difficulty with Osteen when he was in the American League.
- 1:54:18Now the one strike pitch drives him off the dish to make the count one ball one strike.
- 1:54:23Oriole pitching but it's kind of been downgraded for the most part around the country coming into this World Series has now held the Dodgers scoreless for the last twelve innings.
- 1:54:33Fly ball hit down the left field side fading is going to be a foul ball and out of play.
- 1:54:38One ball two strikes.
- 1:54:52One ball two strikes to Jim the fever who struck out against Jim Palmer the second and bounced to the pitcher in the fourth inning and the crowd now begins to get in the ballgame a little bit.
- 1:55:02Palmer rocks and throws struck him out swinging a mess. The fever goes down five strikeouts for Jim Palmer.
- 1:55:10He has held the Dodgers scoreless and allowed for two hits in six and one third innings.
- 1:55:23Over the course of the past year the Dodgers were blank 17 times shut out 17 times.
- 1:55:29Well here's Lou Johnson he doubled in the right field in the second inning and a little pump back liner out over the head of second baseman Dave Johnson and fly to the center fielder Blair in the fourth.
- 1:55:45Palmer's first pitch to the right header low outside ball one.
- 1:55:59Palmer's one nothing pitch high ball two quick check of the scorecard shows there have been 17 strikeouts against the Dodgers in the two games of the series so far.
- 1:56:15Palmer ready.
- 1:56:18Two strike calls two and one the count now and I look to the Oreo bullpen and we see Stu Miller is warming.
- 1:56:31Now to one pitch to the right hand batting Lou Johnson filed out of play behind the plate.
- 1:56:59Palmer's two two pitch ground ball hit sharply toward third baseman Brooks Robinson comes up with a chest high hop the throw on the first and plenty of time to get Lou and we've got two down and now Jim Palmer has equaled the brilliance of yesterday's relief for Mo Drabowski and blanking the Dodgers in six and two third innings.
- 1:57:21Two gone in the last half of the seventh inning and here is John Roseborough who has popped the short and fly to center.
- 1:57:31We're waiting now for Lou Johnson to get back to the Dodger dugout.
- 1:57:37He breaks into a dead run headed back into the dugout.
- 1:57:42The young man pitching for the Orioles this afternoon will not be 21 years old until the 15th of this month.
- 1:57:50Here's a line drive base in over the head of the first baseman out the right field corner Roseborough the first base will hold there as Frank Robinson fields the ball in the right field and the Dodgers have picked up their third hit.
- 1:58:03Two singles and the looping double by Lou Johnson in the second inning.
- 1:58:07The score again the Orioles for and the Dodgers nothing with two down in the last of the seven.
- 1:58:15Now Wes Parker who was intentionally walked in the second inning to load the bases so that Palmer could pitch to Colfax and he got Colfax to pop out.
- 1:58:26Then Parker ripped a single the right field in the fifth inning.
- 1:58:31Palmer does not hold with the runner at first the pitch high ball one.
- 1:58:52Palmer ready to go one nothing ditch swinging a foul out of play and the count evens one and one.
- 1:58:59The pitchers using a stretch with a runner on will for the most part bring both hands down to the belt and sometimes below that before they get the set.
- 1:59:09That is not the case with a Baltimore right-hander Palmer his stretch stops right at chin level.
- 1:59:16Now the pitch high fly ball left field side backing the third baseman Brooks Robinson in foul ground crossing over Brooks.
- 1:59:22Now the catch of the pop-up to retire Parker and stop the Dodgers in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:59:29No runs one base six or no bird errors one man left on at the end of the seventh score Baltimore four Dodgers nothing.
- 1:59:37Well I've got a message for the ladies in the audience so will all you men please tune out for a moment.
- 1:59:42Okay now then ladies now that we're alone I'd like to tell you about a new razor blade.
- 1:59:48It's not for you for your husband so I'm telling you about it well because it's a chance for you to do something nice for him and for yourself too.
- 1:59:57You see Joe has come out with an amazing new blade called the Gillette super stainless also known as the spoiler.
- 2:00:04It has a miracle plastic coating baked on the edge a coating that reduces the pull when you shave that is when he shades.
- 2:00:12Ladies once a man shades with this blade he actually becomes spoiled so spoiled that he can't go back to his old standard of shaving.
- 2:00:19Let's face it ladies when a man is happy with a shave he gets he's happy when it comes down to breakfast too.
- 2:00:25So if you want to spoil him and do something for yourself too go out and get him the spoiler alias the Gillette super stainless.
- 2:00:34And okay guys you can listen again.
- 2:00:39Chuck it might be interesting a lot of the fans listening in around the country just what will the Dodgers be looking at when they come into your ballpark in Baltimore for distances and things like that.
- 2:00:51Well the distances down the power lines in Baltimore are a good deal shorter than they are here at the Dodger Stadium.
- 2:00:56It's 309 feet down the right field and the left field lines and it'll be 410 feet straight away to center field.
- 2:01:03The fence is not the nine foot fence that we have here it's about seven in Baltimore.
- 2:01:12And they will be looking at a native Californian by the name of Wally Bunker.
- 2:01:19Here is Frank Robinson to lead off with the Orioles in the top of the eighth inning of game number two with Baltimore leading the Dodgers four to nothing.
- 2:01:31373 lifetime home runs for this fellow that in Baltimore we call Mr. Hit.
- 2:01:39Now the Dodger bullpen is activated again with Reagan and Mueller.
- 2:01:50First pitch coming on to Frank strike called.
- 2:01:55Frank this afternoon has flied the left walk and then tripled deep in the alley in right center field and this one splashed in between the center fielder and the right fielder.
- 2:02:04Pitch inside he steps back off the plate one ball one strike.
- 2:02:11One of the very strange happenings in Oriole baseball this year was a batting tip provided to Frank Robinson by of all people rookie second baseman Dave Johnson.
- 2:02:21Ball outside at batting practice one night Dave mentioned he thought that Frank was standing farther back from the plate than he normally did.
- 2:02:31I checked it and he was right and went on from there to lead the American League swing out of this strike to.
- 2:02:39Two and two to Frank Robinson.
- 2:02:53And the two to pitch inside full count out three and two to the Oriole right fielder.
- 2:03:01With bird third baseman Brooks Robinson the on deck hitter and Boog Powell waiting around.
- 2:03:09The left hander Paranowski brings the arm down the pitch is a ball four low and outside the second time this afternoon that Frank Robinson has walked.
- 2:03:17The first walk of course issued by Paranowski.
- 2:03:23Here is Brooks Robinson he had one hit at yesterday's opening game of the series it went all the way a solo home run and this afternoon he has bowled to the catcher reached on an error and bowled to the third baseman.
- 2:03:40Pitch is high outside ball one.
- 2:03:56Frank Robinson with a pretty good lead at first Paranowski throws strike call one to one now.
- 2:04:20Here's the one one to Brooks Robinson swing and a miss of all two strikes.
- 2:04:36Robinson leading first and the pitch to Brooks Robinson cut on ground ball up the third base side it's in the hole base hit into left field Frank Robinson down to second base and he will hold there on Brooks Robinson's slashing ground single between short and third.
- 2:04:52So the Orioles in the top of the eighth inning at their leadoff hitters reach a walk to Frank Robinson a single by Brooks Robinson and up to the plate now Boog Powell and against Sandy Koufax this afternoon Boog Powell had two hits in three trips.
- 2:05:09Now he faces Paranowski.
- 2:05:22Here's a butt off the third base side of the mound making to pick up a pitcher no play at third base no play at second throw on the first time to get the sacrificing Boog Powell.
- 2:05:31Frank Robinson races to third Brooks the second on the sacrifice butt off the bat of Boog Powell.
- 2:05:45One down Boog Powell the big man has sacrificed Frank and Brooks Robinson to second and third and now here is Dave Johnson who has popped the second foul to the catcher and single the right field.
- 2:05:58Here's a pitcher infield up very tight off the first base side and a couple of steps back off the third base side.
- 2:06:05Paranowski ready to go pitch strike call.
- 2:06:15Here is throwing in the Oriole bullpen along with knuckleballing Eddie Fisher.
- 2:06:28Dave Johnson is backed out calling time briefly.
- 2:06:32Now the Orioles second baseman is in and ready.
- 2:06:38Here's a pitch strike pitch coming swing ground ball right off the pitcher's leg.
- 2:06:45Here's Brooks Robinson coming home and on into second base goes Dave Johnson.
- 2:06:51A ground shot off the shin a pitcher Paranowski.
- 2:06:54Here's a pitch strike and a paring off the first base side of the infield Paranowski ran it down and then threw it away by the first baseman the Oriole dug out and we have two more bird errors and rather two more bird runs and another Dodger error and that will tie the record.
- 2:07:10And on his way to the mound now comes Walter Alston.
- 2:07:13Frank Robinson has checked in with run number five Brooks Robinson with run number six.
- 2:07:19That run will score on the error charge to the pitcher.
- 2:07:24Dave Johnson will pick up a run that it in on the base hit.
- 2:07:29Scoring Frank Robinson from third base.
- 2:07:34Dave also will take second base on the throwing error charge to Paranowski.
- 2:07:41Alston is on the mound with Roseborough and Paranowski and we're going to have a pitching change right now for the Dodgers.
- 2:07:50And it's going to be Bill Regan and while he's on his way to the mound here's a word from Bob Prince.
- 2:07:56Well you know I'll tell you something big league baseball clubs are good citizens in their communities.
- 2:08:01In the summer just past benefit games played by major league clubs raised six hundred and twenty eight thousand dollars for worthy causes.
- 2:08:09The money went to provide helpful wholesome recreation for young people in overcrowded urban areas.
- 2:08:15But many other fine projects like Boston's famed Jimmy Fund which leads the worldwide crusade against children's leukemia were helped too.
- 2:08:25It is significant and certainly many words will be spoken, many words will be printed and things said about a Dodger ball club that just literally scrambled and
- 2:08:37crawled its way into this World Series by virtually other than their great pitching taking advantage of your mistake.
- 2:08:45And when you made the mistake pouring through for the runs that gave them the victories.
- 2:08:50And in today's ball game unheard of unbelievable no question about it but there for all to see Chuck Thompson six Dodger errors
- 2:08:59and another one could have easily been a sign that they wanted to.
- 2:09:03And of course the unhappy news for Dodger fans is this six error ball game which is a stunning thing I'm sure and proved a lot too much for even the superb
- 2:09:14Sandy Koufax and for the Dodgers so far this afternoon and it also will tie another World Series record for the most errors in a single nine inning game by any one team six by the LA Dodgers.
- 2:09:28On demand Phil Reagan won 14 and lost one with an ERA of 1.62 over the year and the Orioles are a bit familiar with Reagan who has been even greater than brilliant since joining the Dodgers.
- 2:09:47The last time six errors occurred in a World Series game that involved the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants in October of 1917.
- 2:10:02Bob I'm sure you didn't see that one.
- 2:10:05No I really didn't. I don't think you did either. Jim Simpson might have.
- 2:10:15I'm thinking back to through the Orioles season and I can recall the night when the Orioles came up with five errors in the ball game too.
- 2:10:22They are a part of the game of baseball but to occur in the rapid fire order in which they did this afternoon with three Dodger errors in the fifth inning was bizarre and startling happening.
- 2:10:36Here now is Paul Blair right hand hitting Orioles center fielder against the right hander Phil Reagan on a second base Dave Johnson.
- 2:10:51Swing and a miss strike one. Blair is lying to right field he reached on one of the errors charged to Willie Davis in the fifth inning and then was intentionally walked in the sixth inning.
- 2:11:05One strike pitch to Blair.
- 2:11:07Reagan's pitch. Swing and a miss strike two.
- 2:11:14Two strikes to Blair.
- 2:11:19Well in seven games in the 1965 World Series the Dodgers made a total of six errors here in one game.
- 2:11:27Two strike pitch to Blair. Reagan falls. Fly ball hit out at the shallow or off the third base side coming up on the ball. There's a shortstop Wills he's under that makes the catch for the second battle.
- 2:11:39A little bit of a pop up the shortstop Murray Wills.
- 2:11:42Chuck you and I were talking yesterday having worked the 1960 World Series together the Pirates and Yankees are what had to be one of the wackiest of all World Series that's ever been played.
- 2:11:52But while the scores are nowhere near like that here this is giving some evidence of being a little bizarre.
- 2:11:59Here is Andy Etcheverrin.
- 2:12:01Look to the third strike reached on the area in the fifth inning and then hit into the double play in the sixth.
- 2:12:10Dave Johnson at second base two down. Pitch to Etcheverrin. Swing and a foul ball. This one Nick Brosberg on the right hand we hope it's a glancing blow.
- 2:12:20He's now going to massage that hand just a little bit.
- 2:12:24And if he needed a little sympathy he's got the right fellow at the plate the person that Etcheverrin right now we pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 2:12:34Your radio has not drawn cuckoo.
- 2:12:37That's merely the sound of Saratoga Bishy and it's long lasting fears.
- 2:12:41The story behind that fears is even stranger than the sound. You see nature carbonates Saratoga Bishy giving it a perky little fears with incredible staying power.
- 2:12:52It keeps drinks fresh far longer than club soda or any of the imitation Bishy's.
- 2:12:58Saratoga the authentic Bishy in the yellow label.
- 2:13:02WGY WGFM Schenectady.
- 2:13:15Two down.
- 2:13:16Orioles six. Dodgers nothing.
- 2:13:19In the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:13:22And the one one coming to Etcheverrin. Reagan fires swing and a miss. Right two one and two.
- 2:13:43Reagan looking down to Rosebara for the sign.
- 2:13:53And the Dodger really firm delivers. Miss blown away. Two balls two strikes.
- 2:14:00I remember Reagan when he wore the uniform of the Detroit Tigers.
- 2:14:12And the pitch wide of the mark. Polka now three and two.
- 2:14:23The underdog Baltimore Orioles invaded Dodger Stadium beat the Dodgers five two in the first game and lead them six to nothing in the top of the eighth in game number two.
- 2:14:31Here's a ball just a little bit high.
- 2:14:36And Etcheverrin walks.
- 2:14:39The second walk of the inning and the first one charged to Reagan.
- 2:14:45And getting a well deserved hand is Jim Palmer.
- 2:14:50As a young man who was faced with the task of pitching against Sandy Kopacs today I asked Palmer if he had met Sandy. He said no I just met him a moment ago.
- 2:15:00He watched Kopacs pitch in the Coliseum when the Dodgers played there.
- 2:15:10First pitch to Palmer. Wide of the play ball and he gets run out by Rosebara back to the screen and both runners move up a notch.
- 2:15:18I go outside and got my Rosebara all the way to the screen and it's ruled a wild pitch charged to Reagan and that advances Dave Johnson to third base and Andy Etcheverrin to second base.
- 2:15:30Well strange other happenings in Dodger Stadium this afternoon.
- 2:15:38For the real fans around the country I would imagine they'd say beautiful just beautiful.
- 2:15:48Now the one nothing pitch to Palmer. Two out Reagan throws. Swing and a foul tip held out to by Rosebara. A ball of a strike.
- 2:16:05Reagan to the wine and the one one pitch. Swing and a miss strike two and you'd have to say that Reagan had Palmer a little bit fooled on that one.
- 2:16:23The pitch strike three is called. Palmer is called out of strikes but the Orioles of Baltimore pick up two more runs on the same number of bases plus another Dodger error. There's six of the game to tie a World Series record and two men are left.
- 2:16:36At the end of seven and a half innings of play the score is Baltimore six Los Angeles nothing.
- 2:16:48Glamis is out to win you over this year. Glamis is out to win you over this year. Follow your heart see your Glamis dealer today.
- 2:17:06Hi, Edie Gourmet here wondering what you're doing there when you should be test driving Glamis all new 67 balloons. Economy never looks so luxurious. See your Glamis dealer. He's all heart.
- 2:17:22Glamis is out to win you over this year. Follow your heart see your Glamis dealer today.
- 2:17:38The all new 67 Ballon is now on display at your Glamis dealers. He'll do most anything to get you and a new Ballon together today.
- 2:17:50Well the Dodger pitcher is scheduled to lead off on the last half of the eighth inning. It will not be the pitcher it will be Tommy Davis.
- 2:18:00Tommy Davis was all but three on the opener yesterday and the Dodgers have now been held scoreless in the last 13 and 8 of the first two series games.
- 2:18:12Tommy Davis on the mound the tall slender right-handed Jim Palmer of Baltimore.
- 2:18:26And Palmer's first pitch to Davis. Too low a ball.
- 2:18:42Palmer's pitch is a strike called by plate umpire Nester Shilak.
- 2:18:53Now Palmer readies the 1-1 offering to the pinch hitter Tommy Davis.
- 2:18:58Swing fly ball headed toward the alley right center field Frank Robinson going hard to the right is there to cut it off on the first half.
- 2:19:04And Davis delivers to the pitch hitter with a line single toward right center.
- 2:19:14That brings in Maury Wills the fourth Dodger hit of the game. Line single in the alley at right center off the bat of Tommy Davis.
- 2:19:24Here is Wills all for three in this game number two with a bounce out to the mound and twice rolled to the second baseman Davey Johnson.
- 2:19:32The Oriole infield now shortens up a couple of steps to Maury Wills. Palmer sets and throws.
- 2:19:38Here's a pop-up foul outside of third chasing toward the Dodger. Dog out Brooks Robinson can't get to it out of play. Strike one to Wills.
- 2:20:06Now the one strike that's coming to Wills he takes a strike two called and short top of the bat to look at it all the way.
- 2:20:22Tommy Davis open the inning with a pinch single to right. Foul does not hold with him at first base. The set by Palmer the two strike pitch swing and a foul right at the plate. Good breaking stuff from Jim Palmer.
- 2:20:36Palmer at one time this year put together a streak of four consecutive victories and it just so happened that he had pancakes for breakfast that day and went on to win.
- 2:20:47So he kept doing that every time he pitched and ball players now every now and then call him cakes. Two strike pitch coming to Wills.
- 2:20:56Foul ball to sit on the netting behind the plate.
- 2:21:01Matter of fact his very lovely young bride Suzie would call Jim Palmer on the road and remind him when it's his turn to pitch to be sure and have those pancakes.
- 2:21:15The two strike pitch low for a ball and I will now add yes he had pancakes this morning.
- 2:21:30One and two the count to Mari Wills. Palmer's ready to pitch. Popped up foul that may be out of play will be off the third base side.
- 2:21:39Count holding one ball two strikes.
- 2:21:44The Dodgers facing Jim Palmer on the last half of the eighth inning with the Orioles six and the Dodgers nothing.
- 2:21:56Palmer throws. Ground ball down the third base side is just foul just outside that bag.
- 2:22:08Waiting out for Tommy Davis to retreat to first.
- 2:22:18Oriole catcher Etchibar takes to the mound for a quick word with Jim Palmer in the Oriole bullpen a fellow the Orioles refer to as the bullet Stu Miller. His pitching is warming I should say.
- 2:22:38Now the one two pitch coming down to Mari Wills Palmer throws just low two balls two strikes to Wills.
- 2:22:48I guess it was Joe Garagiola said he gives you that Wells Fargo pitch it comes up there in easy stages.
- 2:22:55Two balls two strikes to Wills Palmer ready here's the pitch high pop up.
- 2:23:00Back of second base back goes second base with Davey Johnson Davey Johnson saying he makes the catch. Aparicio calling the shot every step of the way.
- 2:23:08Protected Davey from collision with Blair center fielder and right fielder Frank Robinson coming over one down Wills has popped to the second base with Dave Johnson.
- 2:23:16I never saw him pitching your league Chuck but in our league when he was with us I saw more batter strike out of his head before he ever let go of the ball and I did see Billy White take two swings at the pitch one time.
- 2:23:26But of course it's illegal I don't know how you fellas did it over in the junior league.
- 2:23:31Well they say in our league that if he gets a stiff neck he can't pitch.
- 2:23:37Here now is Junior Gilliam or Jim Gilliam rather an 0-3 this afternoon Palmer throws swinging a high fly ball down the right field side.
- 2:23:44Fading foul and out of the play. Souvenir coming up for some lucky fan.
- 2:23:50Strike one to Gilliam he's popped to short grounded to short and rolled out to the second baseman.
- 2:24:04Now the one strike ditch Palmer ready here it is curved him but it misses low inside pops away from Etchabar and on his way to second base Davis and he pulls him without attacking a throw.
- 2:24:13This one was in the dirt it caromed up his leg into the air and Etchabar retreated and made a quick grab and realized he could throw it away if he got loose and throw to second so he held on and the ruling is a wild pitch charged to Jim Palmer.
- 2:24:26A wild pitch pinch hitter Davis now at second with one out.
- 2:24:31One ball one strike to Gilliam. Great old pros Jim Gilliam.
- 2:24:40Palmer ready to one one pitch high foul out of play behind the plate.
- 2:25:02Palmer ready with the one ball two strike pitch to Gilliam curve hit in the air off into shallow left field back goes to shortstop of the third baseman Brooks Roberts is calling for gives way to Aparicio who makes the catch a step and foul ground to retire Gilliam.
- 2:25:14A fine running catch by Baltimore shortstop Aparicio we have two gone in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:25:20And here now is the unfortunate Willie Davis.
- 2:25:28As a hitter this afternoon Willie is home for free.
- 2:25:34The attendance of the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles this afternoon another new record 55,947 exceeding yesterday's crowd by a half a dozen.
- 2:25:50Tommy Davis is second Willie Davis at the plate and the pitch. Fly ball well hit deep in right center Paul Blair going to the glove side the Oriole center fielder now coming up with the ball is there and makes the grab on the alley in right center to retire.
- 2:26:01Willie Davis from the Dodgers and they're half of the eighth inning. No runs one they sit there were no Oriole errors and a man left on at the end of eight complete the score Baltimore six Los Angeles nothing.
- 2:26:19A great new filter cigarette is born.
- 2:26:25Born with the name camel.
- 2:26:32You camel filters.
- 2:26:41This is the one born rich rich in taste with that big camel head start on flavor.
- 2:26:50Now that great camel heritage of real taste comes to you and our great you filters cigarette.
- 2:26:56No other can compare in flavor.
- 2:26:59No other can compare in quality to new camel filters.
- 2:27:03This is the one you want to try.
- 2:27:06The one.
- 2:27:22The Orioles will come to bat with the top of the order apricio Kirk Leffrey and Frank Robinson of that order against a new Dodger hurler Brewer.
- 2:27:32Reagan and really Peronowski went two thirds of the inning without a base hit he did walk a batter did not allow a run and now gives away to Brewer.
- 2:27:48Jim Brewer warmed yesterday but did not see service in the opening game.
- 2:28:03Lives in a town in Oklahoma called Broken Arrow.
- 2:28:07Oh and two of the Dodgers this year.
- 2:28:10South Park Jim Brewer.
- 2:28:18Aparicio who will lead off is two for four this afternoon.
- 2:28:23And credited with a run batted in.
- 2:28:27Aparicio to inning number nine of game number two with Baltimore leading the Dodgers six to nothing.
- 2:28:45Aparicio waiting.
- 2:28:47Brewer now looks down to the plate to pick up a sign from Roseborough.
- 2:28:51He's ready.
- 2:28:52And here's his first pitch.
- 2:28:54Out toward the shallow right center back having the second baseman Lefebvre shading his eyes with a glove.
- 2:28:59He makes the catch for the first half of the inning.
- 2:29:01Aparicio resires on the pop the second baseman Lefebvre.
- 2:29:06Now Kirk Leffrey collared in four trips this afternoon one for three in yesterday's opening game of the series.
- 2:29:14And Leffrey would like played up by our Shylock to look at the baseball and Jim Brewer who tossed it into Shylock did not throw the accustomed rainbow toss.
- 2:29:23He just whipped it in there.
- 2:29:24Shylock one handed it and gave Brewer that well known look.
- 2:29:35Here's Leffrey the southpaw Brewer pitches high ball one.
- 2:29:49Here's a high foul hit out of play behind the plate.
- 2:29:51One ball one strike to Kirk Leffrey.
- 2:30:03Right back here's a check swing and apparently a foul tip that nicked the bat of Leffrey in the dirt at the plate and the counter ball in two strikes.
- 2:30:23Leffrey started the swing and managed to stop it and turned the body and took the pitch inside for a ball two and two is the count.
- 2:30:37Brewer rocks and throws.
- 2:30:39Low and away.
- 2:30:40Full count to Leffrey.
- 2:30:42One out none on.
- 2:30:43Top of the ninth inning Baltimore six Dodgers nothing.
- 2:30:51And the full count swing and a miss he struck him out.
- 2:30:55Leffrey goes down.
- 2:30:57Two away on the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:31:00And here now comes Frank Robinson who's been to the plate four times this afternoon and reached base three times.
- 2:31:06Twice by the walk once with a booming triple in the alley and right center.
- 2:31:11He has scored two of the Orioles six runs this Friday.
- 2:31:24Brewer's first offering to Frank missed outside of a little ball one.
- 2:31:42And the pitch too low. Two and 0 to Frank Robinson.
- 2:31:58And the two nothing pitch.
- 2:32:00Swing ground ball hopping toward the charging shortstop Wills.
- 2:32:03He gloves it to throw out the first is in time to get Frank Robinson and the Orioles are three on the three down at the top of the ninth inning at the end of eight and one half.
- 2:32:11The score Baltimore six Los Angeles nothing.
- 2:32:16I'm from Carling.
- 2:32:18Wow.
- 2:32:19Do you have a lot of flagpole?
- 2:32:21I have a lot of flags.
- 2:32:22That's why flags is my life.
- 2:32:24I see.
- 2:32:25Well did you finish ours?
- 2:32:27Why sure.
- 2:32:28That's yours.
- 2:32:29The red stripe one up there next to the polka dot.
- 2:32:31Yeah.
- 2:32:32I'll bring it down so you can get a better look.
- 2:32:36This white red stripe here stands for your original calling black label brewery and up here in the corner.
- 2:32:42These eight little black stars stand for the eight nearby black label breweries you have now.
- 2:32:47Well you can't really call that a strike.
- 2:32:49I can just see it.
- 2:32:51That one big white red stripe.
- 2:32:53All them stars flying high above your brewery.
- 2:32:57But that's no stripe.
- 2:32:58It's as wide as the flag.
- 2:32:59The whole flag is red from top to bottom.
- 2:33:02If I say it's a stripe, it's a stripe.
- 2:33:05Well then you'd have to say our calling black label can is a striped can even though it's red all over because...
- 2:33:10Listen sonny, you stick to making the beer and I stick to making the flags.
- 2:33:23Here's the last half of the ninth inning at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
- 2:33:27And for the Dodgers it'll be Ron Fairley to lead off against Baltimore's Jim Palmer
- 2:33:32who has blanked the Dodgers through eighth and all the old pitching has blanked Los Angeles
- 2:33:38through 14 innings of the first two games of the 1966 Classic.
- 2:33:44Here is Ron Fairley who walked by the center and struck out in three turns this afternoon.
- 2:33:57Strike one.
- 2:33:59Fairley.
- 2:34:10And the ball too high to Ron.
- 2:34:12One and one.
- 2:34:16Stu Miller is beginning to ease back in the Oriole bullpen and he'll begin to lob the ball again.
- 2:34:24Now the one-one pitch to Fairley.
- 2:34:25Swing and a miss.
- 2:34:27Strike two. A ball of two strikes.
- 2:34:42And the one-two offering.
- 2:34:44Just missed outside. Two and two.
- 2:35:01Low inside.
- 2:35:02Full count now. Three and two.
- 2:35:04Lead off hitter Ron Fairley at the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:35:21Palmer rocks and throws.
- 2:35:23Swing and a miss. He struck him out.
- 2:35:26That will be the fifth strikeout of the contest for Jim Palmer.
- 2:35:31Check that make it number six.
- 2:35:34LeFever.
- 2:35:36Number five was LeFever in the seventh inning and here now is LeFever in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:35:51In the two games of the series so far, 18 Dodgers have gone down on strikes.
- 2:35:59Ball one is too high to LeFever.
- 2:36:02Jim is off the three.
- 2:36:03Fan twice. Bounce to the pitcher.
- 2:36:12Swing and a miss.
- 2:36:19One and one to LeFever.
- 2:36:25Palmer not wasting any time. The big right hander brings the arm down, deals a curve and a strike is called.
- 2:36:30The ball and two strikes to LeFever. One out and none out in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:36:34Baltimore is six. The Dodgers nothing.
- 2:36:40And the one-two pitch. Palmer throws. Curve beam is in the third for a ball two and two.
- 2:37:08And Palmer's two-two pitch.
- 2:37:10Check swing pop foul that's going to be out of play off the third-day side and the count will hold.
- 2:37:23Quiet is the word for Dodgers Stadium.
- 2:37:29And the two-two. High. Three and two. Well, Palmer took barely three and two a moment ago and got him on strike.
- 2:37:38Now LeFever's got him. Three balls, two strikes. With one out and none out.
- 2:37:48Here's the playoff.
- 2:37:51Ball four is inside and LeFever reaches for the base on balls and out of ball park comes the light.
- 2:37:58Here is Lou Johnson.
- 2:38:00The cuddling ball player has one of the four Dodger hits this afternoon, a double and a second.
- 2:38:05Since then he's fly to center and down to the third.
- 2:38:09Now signing to Jim Palmer that he's not going to hold with the base runner LeFever.
- 2:38:15Just backed off the bag a couple of steps.
- 2:38:20Palmer ready to go. First pitch to Johnson.
- 2:38:23Too high and a ball.
- 2:38:30With that pitch, pitching coach Harry Brekeen of the Orioles comes off the bench and stands up and signs to Amparicio at shortstop and Louie goes in to join the big fella Jim Palmer.
- 2:38:45Amparicio has served in this capacity all year for Baltimore, more or less the captain of the infield. And he's done a magnificent job.
- 2:38:57Now the one outing pitch coming to Lou Johnson. Palmer deals high inside, two balls, no strikes.
- 2:39:16Two outing pitch coming to Johnson. Palmer thralls, strike is called by Schoneck.
- 2:39:24Chris Talaquitas, the umpire at first base, the second base John Rice, third base Mel Steiner.
- 2:39:31Now the two on offering to Johnson. Palmer thralls, swing and a high fly ball, hit deep in the alley left center field.
- 2:39:36Blefrey going to the left side waiting, Paul Blair is over there. It's Blefrey the left fielder who makes the catch rather deep in left field.
- 2:39:43Retire Johnson for the second out in the last half of the ninth inning. And now here is John Roseborough.
- 2:40:00I'm sure you can hear that bugle in the background and it's self-explanatory.
- 2:40:08It's been Saturday all afternoon. Well let's watch Roseborough. The pitch is high, very high in the ball one.
- 2:40:16Palmer's struggling just a little bit but in his first World Series game Jim Palmer has blanked the Dodgers for eight and two thirds.
- 2:40:30He's faced four hits, never more than one in an inning. The pitch, low inside, ball two.
- 2:40:43Manager Power has joined pitching coach Harry Brekeen on the steps of the Oriole dugout watching Palmer very carefully.
- 2:40:51His two-nothing pitch is a ball three inside. And now Etcheverr trots the ball back to the mound.
- 2:41:12Two down in the bottom of the nine. Dodger runner at first, LeFevre. A count of three balls, and no strikes to John Roseborough who has popped the short fly to center and singled the right field.
- 2:41:28Palmer is ready to pitch right down the groove of the strike as called and Roseborough was naturally taking all the way.
- 2:41:40Now the three-one pitch. Palmer's ready. Here it is. High fly ball, hit out of the shallow center, backpedaling to shortstop, Aparecio calling for it, Aparecio waiting.
- 2:41:49He's got it and that's it. Jim Palmer has become the youngest pitcher to pitch a shutout in World Series history.
- 2:41:58The youngest pitcher to pitch a shutout in World Series history. Here in the ninth inning the total's for the Dodgers.
- 2:42:05There's no runs, no hits, no errors and one man left on. And that's it.
- 2:42:11In game number two of the 1966 World Series, the Baltimore Orioles have defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers six to nothing.
- 2:42:20And Bob, I sure love to watch those birds work around that infield.
- 2:42:24I got an idea Chuck, you're trying to tell me something.
- 2:42:26Well, they're a lot like Gillette Foamy.
- 2:42:28Oh, I knew it.
- 2:42:30I mean, work a little foamy around your beard and good things happen every time you shave.
- 2:42:35Take smooth shaving comfort, a foamy trademark.
- 2:42:39That's because that rich, creamy foamy lather keeps your beard soft and moist all through your shave.
- 2:42:44Nobody makes a lather like foamy. So moist, so rich, so creamy.
- 2:42:49Nobody makes a lather like Gillette.
- 2:42:51I think you got it.
- 2:42:52I think I'll get it. Foamy by Gillette.
- 2:42:55But don't stop there. Remember the Right Guard. It's the runaway favorite with men and families everywhere.
- 2:43:01As they say, Gillette Right Guard is the perfect personal deodorant for everybody.
- 2:43:05Nothing touches you but the spray itself. Two seconds gives 24-hour protection.
- 2:43:11And that famous Right Guard protection lasts far longer than 24 hours with regular use, right?
- 2:43:17Right you are, Chuck Thompson. Everybody out for Gillette Right Guard.
- 2:43:21So effective, it's the world's best selling deodorant.
- 2:43:24I'd like to remind you this broadcast was authorized in a broadcast rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball

- 2:43:37without the expressed consent of the Commissioner of Baseball is prohibited.
- 2:43:41Now Chuck Thompson and I will be back out here for a very brief little get together with you on a summary of this ballgame.
- 2:43:48And we'll be out as we say right after this word from Joe Garagiola.
- 2:43:53This is Joe Garagiola. Your Chrysler Plymouth dealer has a free gift for you.
- 2:43:58It's called the Joe Garagiola World Series Fun and Facts Scorebook.
- 2:44:02There are some facts in it, but the emphasis is on fun.
- 2:44:06You can find out who hit the most doubles in a World Series game,
- 2:44:10but you can also find out the kind of things that fascinate a guy like me.
- 2:44:14For instance, well for instance, who was the pennant winning pitcher who told the press on the eve of the World Series,
- 2:44:21The other team will win it. Or for instance, how a simple innocent question can get a catcher thrown out of a ballgame.
- 2:44:28There are score sheets in the book too for those who know how to keep score.
- 2:44:32And for those who don't, there's a simple, really simple explanation of how to score.
- 2:44:38Stop in at your Chrysler Plymouth dealer today and pick up your free copy of the Joe Garagiola World Series Scorebook.
- 2:44:45It's all part of customer care and exclusive at your Chrysler Plymouth dealer,
- 2:44:50which means he cares as much about you as he does about your car.
- 2:44:57Well Chuck Thompson, as you said, young Palmer now becomes the youngest pitcher to ever shut out a team in the World Series competition.
- 2:45:04He's just a year and nine days away from his number on his back, which is 22 because he's not 21 yet.
- 2:45:10He won't get there until the 15th of October.
- 2:45:12The boy pitched a magnificent ballgame and as alluded to before,
- 2:45:17The supposedly underrated Baltimore pitching staff has thrown nothing but goose eggs at the Dodgers in the first two games.
- 2:45:24For two months of the past American League campaign, the Dodgers were the finest, or rather the Orioles were the finest looking baseball club
- 2:45:30American League baseball men had seen for many years.
- 2:45:32It is Hank Bowers' wish and the Orioles' wish that they can prove that again here in this World Series.
- 2:45:37They certainly performed in great fashion today with a 6-0 shutout.
- 2:45:40The total three for Baltimore, six runs, eight hits, no errors, six men left.
- 2:45:44For the Dodgers, no runs, four bases, six errors, tying a World Series record, seven men left on.
- 2:45:50The Dodgers come into Baltimore's Memorial Stadium looking for their first run after being shut out for 15 consecutive innings.
- 2:45:58Yes, and the Dodgers' supposedly impenetrable infield is the one that didn't hurt them so much today is their outfield.
- 2:46:06And poor Willie Davis from making three errors in one inning tied a record that he,
- 2:46:10set a record that he wishes that he didn't have to ever look at again.
- 2:46:14There's no question about that.
- 2:46:16And the Dodgers, as Chuck told you, in Baltimore will be looking for their very first run after being shut out.
- 2:46:21And Palmer, the youngest pitcher, that's a record.
- 2:46:23Willie Davis sets a record for three errors in one inning.
- 2:46:26And that's as many as they scored all in one seven-game World Series.
- 2:46:32And now here's young Palmer, the youngest pitcher ever to pitch a shutout.
- 2:46:35Wade Hoyt of the Yankees did it in 1921.
- 2:46:38So we'll just be pulling out of here now.
- 2:46:41We want to say thanks to our NBC engineer Bob Jensen and our NBC producer Hal Ashby.
- 2:46:46And a deep bow too from Chuck and me to Jimmy Simpson of NBC for his invaluable aid.
- 2:46:51This will wrap up the second game of the 1966 World Series.
- 2:46:55Be with us again on Saturday, October 8, 1245 Eastern Daylight Savings Time,
- 2:47:00for the third game of the World Series, when your host again will be Chrysler Corporation.

- 2:47:11Gillette Foamy, so moist, so rich, so creamy.
- 2:47:15Camel Filters, the filter cigarette that was born rich.
- 2:47:19And Carling Black Label, why not enjoy one right now?
- 2:47:30The final score again here in the second game of the series.
- 2:47:34Baltimore 6, the Los Angeles Dodgers nothing.
- 2:47:37Speaking now for Chuck Thompson, this is Bob Prince saying thanks for being with us.
- 2:47:42This has been an NBC Radio Network production.
- 2:47:46This is the NBC Radio Network.
