- 0:03Speaker 1: Wake up.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good next.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kicking off your day in the best way. It's Sonia
- 0:10Speaker 1: and Joakim on the shock circuit. Well, here we go.
- 0:12Speaker 1: We're in the middle of the week right now. Hope
- 0:14Speaker 1: it's going well for you. Oh, wow, it's your PSL
- 0:16Speaker 1: listening comprehension exam, I wonder. When we come back, I
- 0:19Speaker 1: want to give you something to look forward to in
- 0:21Speaker 1: cinema starting next Thursday. Next Thursday here in Singapore. What
- 0:26Speaker 1: other foreign language films or dialect films are we dropping
- 0:29Speaker 1: in cinema? Not exactly foreign language, but this one is
- 0:32Speaker 1: a beloved.
- 0:33Speaker 1: OK, and maybe you can do it after PSLE for you. OK, well,
- 0:38Speaker 1: you know, um, I have to admit it's been a
- 0:39Speaker 1: while since I stepped into a cinema to watch a movie.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You will never, you will not believe what was the
- 0:44Speaker 1: last movie I watched. You were there. Yeah, you were there.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The movie was the last time I had the time
- 0:51Speaker 1: to sit down in the cinema to watch a film.
- 0:53Speaker 1: You've not seen Odyssey or Spider-Man. Don't come at me
- 0:56Speaker 1: about it. I'm trying to, I'm trying to find time.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Unfortunately, um, over the past 10 minutes, Joakim has decided
- 1:02Speaker 1: to head on home. He came into the studio, not
- 1:06Speaker 1: feeling so great this morning, saying that the haze might
- 1:08Speaker 1: have affected his like nose and
- 1:10Speaker 1: And stuff and he was coughing a lot, so he
- 1:12Speaker 1: decided to head back first and I told him, you
- 1:15Speaker 1: know what, it's all good. Uh, go take a rest,
- 1:18Speaker 1: go see a doctor or something. I mean, I don't
- 1:20Speaker 1: know what the direct correlation is with the haze and catching,
- 1:24Speaker 1: you know, a bad flu. I think if you're very sensitive, uh, honestly,
- 1:28Speaker 1: my nose has been just absolutely going crazy.
- 1:31Speaker 1: You, you might get some like sinus infections and things
- 1:34Speaker 1: like that, but yeah, please consult your doctor if you
- 1:37Speaker 1: are easily affected by haze and the particles in the air.
- 1:41Speaker 1: If you have a, you know, sort of a purifier
- 1:43Speaker 1: at home or something, that could be the best time
- 1:45Speaker 1: to be using it. Anyway, no worries. The show continues.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Coming up in just a little bit, there's been so
- 1:52Speaker 1: much that happened overnight, I don't even know where to begin.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Um, I guess I'll start with a bit of a
- 1:59Speaker 1: weird and odd crime related news here in Singapore. Um, unfortunately,
- 2:04Speaker 1: this piece of news, I don't know whether to categorize
- 2:08Speaker 1: it as border crime or not, no, because I, I
- 2:10Speaker 1: feel this is, this is a very unique case. In fact,
- 2:14Speaker 1: it is the first time in Singapore, anyone has been
- 2:18Speaker 1: jailed for such an offense. Um, to me, I think
- 2:21Speaker 1: it's categorized as border crime because I can't believe this
- 2:23Speaker 1: woman decided this was a good idea.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Uh, but you decide, OK, you decide. So, this lady's
- 2:28Speaker 1: only 28 years old, by the way, she's, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 1: got a whole life and future ahead of her. She
- 2:34Speaker 1: decided to keep smuggled puppies at home and then sell
- 2:39Speaker 1: them online.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And not just that, it makes me very angry because
- 2:44Speaker 1: the pets were smuggled and kept in very unsafe and
- 2:47Speaker 1: unsanitary conditions and you know me, I'm, I'm a dog lover.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm an animal lover in general, and I, I just,
- 2:53Speaker 1: it breaks my heart when I see things like that. Um, well,
- 2:56Speaker 1: she wasn't alone though, she didn't act alone. She's got
- 2:59Speaker 1: a husband that's older.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Um, but clearly maturity doesn't come with age sometimes, but
- 3:04Speaker 1: they've been sentenced to jail for illegally importing these puppies
- 3:08Speaker 1: from Malaysia, then keeping them at home to be sold
- 3:11Speaker 1: on Instagram. How crazy is that? I mean, who thought
- 3:14Speaker 1: it was a good idea, right? Um, they're amongst the
- 3:16Speaker 1: first ever in Singapore history to be jailed for keeping
- 3:20Speaker 1: animals in captivity, then selling them.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Um, so the, the problem is, it sounds like they've
- 3:26Speaker 1: been doing this for a while. Um, they were arrested
- 3:29Speaker 1: in December 2023 for their involvement in illegal import of puppies,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and then they were discovered, um by ICA officers, actually,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know, when they inspect the vehicles and things like that.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So I, I don't know how long their entire business
- 3:44Speaker 1: went on for, but they profited around $21,000 through selling
- 3:50Speaker 1: over 20 puppies on Instagram. So,
- 3:53Speaker 1: Well, yes, well, we put a lot of the blame
- 3:55Speaker 1: on them, but on us as consumers as well. Oh man,
- 3:59Speaker 1: I mean, I don't wanna
- 4:00Speaker 1: I don't want to sound too preachy or naggy about this,
- 4:03Speaker 1: but if you can adopt, please just adopt. There are
- 4:05Speaker 1: so many great organizations out there for you to adopt,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and I know that the, the perception is always, oh,
- 4:11Speaker 1: but I want the cute puppies or I want the
- 4:13Speaker 1: cute dogs. Um, let me tell you this, not, it
- 4:16Speaker 1: is not all the time that these cute puppies are
- 4:19Speaker 1: easy to handle as well, you know, because you have
- 4:22Speaker 1: to have a lot of patience and
- 4:24Speaker 1: Bring them up from a baby, from the baby version,
- 4:28Speaker 1: from the puppy version, right? And it comes with a
- 4:30Speaker 1: different set of challenges. So, you need to be really
- 4:33Speaker 1: ready for the, the kind of responsibility. It's like taking
- 4:37Speaker 1: care of a baby, honestly, right? And there are some
- 4:40Speaker 1: benefits with adopting a slightly more senior dog. Um, my
- 4:44Speaker 1: own dog that was adopted.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I want to say, has it already been like 3
- 4:49Speaker 1: or 4 years now? I think 3 years, perhaps slightly longer. Um,
- 4:54Speaker 1: she's already 8 years old. So when we adopted her,
- 4:56Speaker 1: she's like a full, full adult, right? And some may
- 4:59Speaker 1: consider her to be a little bit on the older
- 5:01Speaker 1: side already.
- 5:02Speaker 1: So, sometimes we as humans and as future pet owners
- 5:07Speaker 1: selfishly think like, oh, we want the dog to last
- 5:10Speaker 1: for as long as we can, you know, for a lifetime.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But there are so many cases of people just giving
- 5:14Speaker 1: up their pets after a while because they just decided
- 5:17Speaker 1: they can't handle it, right? So, adopt, there's so many
- 5:21Speaker 1: dogs that need a home right now. If you can,
- 5:23Speaker 1: of course, if you have the, the headspace and you
- 5:26Speaker 1: have the ability to take on that kind of responsibility.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Oh, talking about this makes me want to give my
- 5:31Speaker 1: dog a hug. I. She's so cute. I love her
- 5:34Speaker 1: so much. Anyway, coming up in just a bit, about
- 5:37Speaker 1: 10 minutes or so, we'd love to open up phone
- 5:40Speaker 1: lines to let you dedicate songs during this PSLE season.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I know it's not easy, so, um, truly hope that
- 5:46Speaker 1: you're hanging in there.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Yesterday when I went on 987's TikTok Live, quite a
- 5:50Speaker 1: few of you actually left comments telling me how your
- 5:53Speaker 1: listening compre went on. If you want to tell me
- 5:55Speaker 1: what your topic was about, how it went on, and
- 5:58Speaker 1: how you felt you did, please let me know as well.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Good morning. This
- 6:01Speaker 2: is Ashley.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Hello, Ashley, which school are you from?
- 6:05Speaker 2: I'm from Paya Lebar Methodist Girls.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Alright, nice. We love your school. Uh, what level are
- 6:11Speaker 1: you in this year, by the way, and are you
- 6:13Speaker 1: taking any exams?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm.
- 6:17Speaker 1: How's it been going? What was the, what was the
- 6:19Speaker 1: paper about yesterday? The listening compri? Um
- 6:21Speaker 2: the
- 6:21Speaker 2: listening compri is like multiple topics because there's multiple passages.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I feel like the recording was very bad because the
- 6:31Speaker 2: pronunciation of the words also.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Oh, like not so clear, is it? Yeah. Oh no, OK, well,
- 6:37Speaker 1: you did the best you could and that's not on you.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I think you, you sound like you're well prepared. Yeah. Fantastic.
- 6:43Speaker 1: OK, what song can I get you today to perk
- 6:45Speaker 1: you up? Um,
- 6:46Speaker 2: could you play any song by Cortis, please?
- 6:50Speaker 1: Alright, sure, we love Cortis here. Are you gonna catch
- 6:53Speaker 1: Cortis in Singapore when they come here for F1? Yeah, right.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Nice one. Alright, we hope to see you at the
- 6:58Speaker 1: live show and you have a great day, OK? OK.
- 7:01Speaker 1: All the best for the rest of your PSLE. Thank you. Bye-bye. Bye.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Over 70,000 Singapore dollars has been lost to job scams associated.
- 7:11Speaker 1: With this particular collectible. I'm talking about Pokemon and other
- 7:16Speaker 1: types of trading cards, and this amount of money lost
- 7:19Speaker 1: to job scams related to these trading cards only happened
- 7:23Speaker 1: since 25th of August of 2026, you know. So, can
- 7:26Speaker 1: you imagine in less than a month, victims actually lost
- 7:30Speaker 1: 710 altogether. Um, they were instructed to complete certain tasks
- 7:35Speaker 1: like opening digital trading card packs or selecting.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Um, trading cards in exchange for commission. So, people fell
- 7:43Speaker 1: for it. I think they probably thought it was a
- 7:45Speaker 1: good deal or something. Um, and in this particular scam variant,
- 7:49Speaker 1: they will contact the victims through unsolicited messages or calls,
- 7:53Speaker 1: and they'll be like, hey, you know, I got this job, or, um,
- 7:56Speaker 1: I have this task that you, you should do, and
- 7:59Speaker 1: then they get directed to fraudulent websites, and that's it,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you know, their details are taken and all that.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Um, but our friends over at Singapore Police Force were
- 8:07Speaker 1: quite swift about it. Uh, they did come out and
- 8:10Speaker 1: say immediately, please be careful. Use the ScamShield app as
- 8:14Speaker 1: well to block your scam calls, filter suspicious messages, especially SMSs,
- 8:20Speaker 1: even though it's, it's been a while since I even
- 8:22Speaker 1: replied any SMSs or even said the word SM.
- 8:25Speaker 1: SMS, but you got to be careful because I think
- 8:28Speaker 1: there are a bunch of people who, you know, when
- 8:30Speaker 1: they get so caught up in their passion or their
- 8:34Speaker 1: interest that nothing else matters, you know, it, it just
- 8:38Speaker 1: becomes a blur and you may not be so alert. So,
- 8:41Speaker 1: ScamShield app, please get your family to, to, to get
- 8:44Speaker 1: it done.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Um, if you're curious, please log on to their website, scamshield.gov.sg.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I am not paid to say this on air. I
- 8:52Speaker 1: genuinely believe that you need to look after yourself. Protect yourself,
- 8:56Speaker 1: protect your finances at all costs, um, make sure that
- 8:59Speaker 1: you don't, you know, spend all this hard earned money
- 9:02Speaker 1: or let this hard-earned money go to waste. I, I
- 9:04Speaker 1: cannot imagine the pain. I mean, even though this 700
- 9:08Speaker 1: has been, it's, it's across a bunch of victims, but
- 9:12Speaker 1: can you imagine there have been cases where people lose
- 9:14Speaker 1: like
- 9:15Speaker 1: Hundreds of thousands on, on their own account, right? That's
- 9:18Speaker 1: just scary. And I saw this piece of news that
- 9:21Speaker 1: really just got me thinking, whether or not we would
- 9:25Speaker 1: be happier doing this particular profit sharing, uh, pay every
- 9:30Speaker 1: single month, OK? So I'm taking you to Spring Leaf
- 9:33Speaker 1: Prata right now. Very famous, as you know, they're very
- 9:36Speaker 1: well known for their authentic prata and they also put
- 9:38Speaker 1: some interesting innovative things on prata.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But their boss has decided, you know what, they're giving
- 9:45Speaker 1: long-term staff a cut of each shop's profits. So he
- 9:50Speaker 1: runs a profit sharing scheme where staff of at least
- 9:54Speaker 1: 5 years or more can take up to 30% of
- 9:57Speaker 1: a new shop's profits. I'm very sure this is like
- 10:01Speaker 1: Performance-based as well. Um, and, you know, it's you got
- 10:05Speaker 1: to hustle and you got to show some results for
- 10:08Speaker 1: that particular shop. But I thought that was a really cool.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I mean, that is a way to motivate your staff, right?
- 10:13Speaker 1: And if you, if you already know anything about their
- 10:17Speaker 1: prata shop, every batch of dough is actually made by
- 10:21Speaker 1: someone with autism. And I just think that is something
- 10:24Speaker 1: to applaud him for. It's just incredible because he hires
- 10:28Speaker 1: in such a unique way.
- 10:30Speaker 1: And I, I just want to give him a shout
- 10:32Speaker 1: out on air. It's just incredible what this boss is doing,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, so.
- 10:37Speaker 1: So, like I said earlier, um, this particular boss has
- 10:41Speaker 1: made all of us, I think, sometimes envy some of
- 10:44Speaker 1: his employees. I was talking about Spring Leaf Prata Place boss. Um,
- 10:48Speaker 1: he runs a profit sharing scheme where staff of about
- 10:51Speaker 1: 5 years at least or more take up to 30%
- 10:55Speaker 1: of a new shop's profits, and I think this has
- 10:59Speaker 1: gone across social media. People are like praising it.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Some are saying, wow, I wish he was my boss,
- 11:04Speaker 1: you know, things like that. And we, we all know
- 11:06Speaker 1: that Springleaf Prata is very loved, right, here in Singapore, especially. So,
- 11:10Speaker 1: I wanted to open up the phone lines, 669-11987. Of course,
- 11:14Speaker 1: I know that with every sort of scheme or, or,
- 11:18Speaker 1: you know, um, job, there's going to be its pros
- 11:20Speaker 1: and cons, and they're gonna be different types of conditions
- 11:24Speaker 1: as well, and responsibilities that come with it.
- 11:28Speaker 1: So, I'm gonna ask you this question here. If you
- 11:30Speaker 1: were given a chance to earn every month, and you
- 11:35Speaker 1: earn via a profit sharing scheme via your job, would
- 11:39Speaker 1: you take it? But the catch is that you may
- 11:42Speaker 1: have to hustle harder.
- 11:44Speaker 1: And you probably may have to work weekends. Let's just say, OK? Maybe, maybe, maybe.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Like the harder you hustle, the more money you earn.
- 11:51Speaker 1: For those people who are in sales, if you're tuning
- 11:53Speaker 1: in now, I'm sure you understand how that feels. But
- 11:56Speaker 1: I think for the vast majority of, of people, you know, we,
- 11:59Speaker 1: we come to work, we come to the office, you
- 12:01Speaker 1: get paid monthly, right? And a lot of my friends,
- 12:03Speaker 1: actually most of my friends don't have access to like
- 12:07Speaker 1: commission-based jobs. They just earn what they earn in a,
- 12:10Speaker 1: in a single month.
- 12:12Speaker 1: So, what's your opinion? Do you feel like if you
- 12:14Speaker 1: were switched to a profit sharing scheme, would you be
- 12:17Speaker 1: more motivated at work? Would you rather do that via commission?
- 12:21Speaker 1: And of course, you know, sometimes we get messages coming
- 12:23Speaker 1: through from people who, who do work in commission-based jobs
- 12:26Speaker 1: and who
- 12:27Speaker 1: Maybe work in sales. I do get messages from them
- 12:30Speaker 1: sometimes as well, but inspired by what our, our big
- 12:34Speaker 1: boss at Spring Leaf Prata Place has been doing, giving
- 12:37Speaker 1: longtime staff a cut of each shop's profits, I think
- 12:40Speaker 1: it's inspired me to ask this question here today. And
- 12:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna hit to messages first to see what's up
- 12:46Speaker 1: over there, OK?
- 12:47Speaker 1: So, uh, first message to here is saying hi to H.
- 12:49Speaker 1: You said, good morning, Sonia. Yes, for me, it's OK. Now,
- 12:53Speaker 1: I work 7 days myself as an assistant chef. Sometimes
- 12:57Speaker 1: public holidays, I also need to work as a chef.
- 13:00Speaker 1: It's been 3 months since I've been doing this. I
- 13:03Speaker 1: actually decided to leave my job as a grabfood writer,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but it's worth it. OK, OK, that's an interesting POV
- 13:11Speaker 1: over there. We've got an anonymous message coming through here.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Hey, good morning, Sonia. Please do not say my name.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Currently, I'm just like your friends like you mentioned earlier,
- 13:22Speaker 1: slogging every month, taking back the same amount of pay.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And a lot of times I'm working late into the night, overtime,
- 13:29Speaker 1: even when I'm not in the office, I'm at home working.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Do I get any extra pay for this? No, I don't.
- 13:35Speaker 1: We don't get paid overtime in these settings because we're
- 13:37Speaker 1: replying emails or often working on things in our own
- 13:41Speaker 1: personal time at home. I only have like maybe an
- 13:44Speaker 1: hour or two to myself late at night and even so,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I'm planning for my wedding right now.
- 13:50Speaker 1: In 2027 and it's proving to be very, very stressful.
- 13:54Speaker 1: So I don't really know what to do at this
- 13:56Speaker 1: point with my job. If they could come up with
- 13:59Speaker 1: more of a commission-based thing or be paid more for
- 14:01Speaker 1: my time, I'll definitely be more motivated, especially since I've
- 14:05Speaker 1: got a honeymoon to plan for as well. Well, firstly, anonymous,
- 14:09Speaker 1: congratulations on your wedding in 2027. Truly is wedding season, right? Um,
- 14:14Speaker 1: I feel you. I, I see some of my friends
- 14:17Speaker 1: really struggling with that as well, you know, taking work
- 14:19Speaker 1: home and everything, so,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I, I hope that, you know, eventually, maybe you will
- 14:23Speaker 1: find another job that you deserve. You know, you, you
- 14:26Speaker 1: sound like a hard worker and you're putting so much
- 14:28Speaker 1: time and effort into it. So I, I really appreciate that. OK,
- 14:32Speaker 1: more of your messages coming through actually, quite a number
- 14:34Speaker 1: of you sharing very lengthy stories. I will read and
- 14:37Speaker 1: get to them in just a little while. In the meantime,
- 14:39Speaker 1: There's time for you to get your stories and opinions in.
- 14:43Speaker 1: You can call me 669-11987. The question is, if you
- 14:47Speaker 1: were given a chance to switch to a commission-based job
- 14:51Speaker 1: or maybe the current job that you are in right now,
- 14:53Speaker 1: they decide, hey, you know what? I'm gonna give you
- 14:55Speaker 1: a cut of our profits. I'm gonna give you commission
- 14:58Speaker 1: and uh pay you per hour over time perhaps if
- 15:01Speaker 1: you are staying back very late in the office. Would
- 15:03Speaker 1: you opt for that?
- 15:04Speaker 1: But of course, there's always going to be a give
- 15:06Speaker 1: and take, right, in such situations, but theoretically, would you
- 15:09Speaker 1: prefer a commission-based job? Lots of great conversations going off, off-air,
- 15:14Speaker 1: on off-air right now.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Can't English at this point. And um I want to
- 15:19Speaker 1: read out a few more messages before we move on.
- 15:21Speaker 1: You heard from Joanna earlier on air. The question is,
- 15:25Speaker 1: if you were given the chance to earn like a
- 15:28Speaker 1: commission-based income every month, would you make the switch, considering and,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and provided that you're not already in a commission-based um
- 15:36Speaker 1: industry and
- 15:37Speaker 1: On, we also heard from someone who used to work
- 15:39Speaker 1: in a commission-based industry and decided it wasn't for her. Yeah.
- 15:44Speaker 1: So there's always two sides, right? And I'm going to
- 15:46Speaker 1: messages first. I, I'm not sure whether you want me
- 15:48Speaker 1: to say your name on air, but I'm just going
- 15:50Speaker 1: to say hi to S. You said, hey, Sonia, so,
- 15:53Speaker 1: I'm a videographer right now, a full-time one.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And I'm so jealous of people who earn based on commission,
- 16:00Speaker 1: because in the creative industry, when you work full-time, there
- 16:03Speaker 1: is an income ceiling and it's super difficult to earn
- 16:06Speaker 1: more than a certain benchmark as compared to people working in,
- 16:10Speaker 1: let's say sales, insurance, or property. I really wish the
- 16:14Speaker 1: income for creatives.
- 16:15Speaker 1: would be higher for the amount of hours and ideas
- 16:18Speaker 1: that we put into our work. If you're passionate about
- 16:20Speaker 1: your job, you don't feel like you're actually working. I
- 16:23Speaker 1: feel like it only applies in the very beginning or
- 16:26Speaker 1: the first few years afterwards. If not, that passion might
- 16:29Speaker 1: just die and it's just that income is not enough
- 16:32Speaker 1: and you have to do more. I don't want to
- 16:34Speaker 1: do so much freelance because there's no CPF and no
- 16:37Speaker 1: stability as well. So honestly, I'm really not sure.
- 16:41Speaker 1: As you know what, I feel you. I've got a
- 16:42Speaker 1: lot of friends who work in production and you know,
- 16:45Speaker 1: I myself, my folks and my, my family, we came
- 16:48Speaker 1: from like a production company background, right? And it's tough,
- 16:52Speaker 1: it's tough. It's also tough because a lot of the
- 16:56Speaker 1: companies here in Singapore, like production companies, uh, we're not.
- 16:59Speaker 1: They're not big enough to be paying you the kind
- 17:02Speaker 1: of money that I think you deserve or that you expect, right?
- 17:05Speaker 1: And like you rightfully said, passion has taken you through
- 17:09Speaker 1: these few years, but now probably you've got bills to pay,
- 17:12Speaker 1: you got plans to make in your adult life that,
- 17:15Speaker 1: you know, now you're starting to consider, is this good
- 17:18Speaker 1: enough or is this enough for me?
- 17:20Speaker 1: So I hear you and I feel you and I
- 17:22Speaker 1: completely agree that certain areas in the creative industry and
- 17:25Speaker 1: even other industries could see some improvement in income as well. So,
- 17:30Speaker 1: fingers crossed, I hope, you know, more conversations about this
- 17:34Speaker 1: will happen and the powers that be will change it up.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And in the meantime, all the best to you. Now,
- 17:40Speaker 1: we're getting a mixed bag of reactions because I've got,
- 17:42Speaker 1: on one hand,
- 17:44Speaker 1: People who are saying yes, they would love to switch
- 17:46Speaker 1: to commission-based, but they still want to stay in their
- 17:48Speaker 1: job because they like their job. On the flip side,
- 17:50Speaker 1: I've got people telling me that they've had experience with
- 17:53Speaker 1: commission-based jobs and they didn't want to go back there. So,
- 17:57Speaker 1: there's many ways of seeing it. And uh first of all,
- 18:00Speaker 1: I want to say hi to Shan who said, morning.
- 18:02Speaker 1: My company gives commission to us as a team. All
- 18:05Speaker 1: of us have individual KPIs and only if all of
- 18:09Speaker 1: our KPIs are hit, the team will receive the commission.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I like it this way because it helps us work
- 18:15Speaker 1: together to help one another. That's really cute, Shenny, uh, Shenny, sorry,
- 18:19Speaker 1: I got your name wrong earlier. Um, more of your
- 18:22Speaker 1: messages coming through right now. This is quite a lengthy one.
- 18:25Speaker 1: You didn't leave a name, um, but, uh, oh, Dennis. Yes. Hi, Dennis.
- 18:29Speaker 1: You said, hi, Sonia. I would like to take the
- 18:31Speaker 1: commission-based option, but only if there's still some form of
- 18:36Speaker 1: basic salary beneath it.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Because when my company tells me work harder, sell more,
- 18:40Speaker 1: and you earn more, I'm actually quite motivated. At least
- 18:43Speaker 1: my income has a ceiling that I can control. If
- 18:46Speaker 1: I'm pulling in extra hours, bringing in more business and
- 18:49Speaker 1: making more profit for the company, I want to see
- 18:52Speaker 1: some of that come back to me. But I wouldn't
- 18:55Speaker 1: want my entire salary to be based on commission. Singapore
- 18:58Speaker 1: is already expensive enough. I don't want my mortgage, bills,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and even Taipeng to depend on whether this month's customers
- 19:04Speaker 1: are in a good mood.
- 19:05Speaker 1: And if the overtime part matters, the overtime part matters
- 19:08Speaker 1: as well. If I'm staying back till like 10:00 p.m.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I'd rather be paid for those extra hours than hear,
- 19:14Speaker 1: hey guys, we're all one big family here. Hey man,
- 19:16Speaker 1: family doesn't pay my electricity bill. So yes, give me
- 19:20Speaker 1: my commission and pay me fairly for overtime. I'll take
- 19:22Speaker 1: the risk, but the company has to take some responsibility
- 19:25Speaker 1: as well. If you want me to think like an
- 19:27Speaker 1: owner and help you make money, then let me earn
- 19:29Speaker 1: like one. Wow, Dennis, you took the effort to type
- 19:33Speaker 1: this out.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I appreciate that. Um, great views here and I, I
- 19:40Speaker 1: can only hope that eventually, everything that you've been texting
- 19:44Speaker 1: me about and you've been talking to me about, you
- 19:47Speaker 1: get to manifest it and it comes, comes true for
- 19:49Speaker 1: you as well, OK? You deserve the money for the
- 19:53Speaker 1: time that you're putting in. So all the best. A
- 19:55Speaker 1: very unique piece of food news here today that I
- 19:58Speaker 1: say kudos to this Heartland Shop bakery.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Um, it's called JNC Bakery, where they decided to do
- 20:05Speaker 1: something quite unconventional, I would say. Um, you know, usually
- 20:09Speaker 1: when you say eat pizzas or cakes or, you know, um,
- 20:13Speaker 1: Any sort of baked goods, you might sort of trim
- 20:16Speaker 1: off the edge, right? OK. Especially for pizza crusts, sometimes
- 20:20Speaker 1: I see people tossing it aside or maybe even for
- 20:22Speaker 1: those cakes, like you trim off the edges. Um, here
- 20:25Speaker 1: we go with bags of cake scraps that have started
- 20:29Speaker 1: to sell and become a hit at JNC Bakery.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Um, she's charging $4 for a bag of cake scraps.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't, it's not as nasty as it sounds.
- 20:41Speaker 1: It's actually really nice because frankly speaking, I love the
- 20:44Speaker 1: edges of the cake. They're, they're a little bit toastier, um,
- 20:48Speaker 1: and the flavor is, you know, definitely punchier compared to
- 20:52Speaker 1: the center of the cake, which is, you know, nice
- 20:54Speaker 1: and moist, but of course, I would ideally like the
- 20:57Speaker 1: entire cake.
- 20:58Speaker 1: However, that being said, um, most bakers will probably consider
- 21:01Speaker 1: those brown edges trimmed off, um, scraps that you just
- 21:04Speaker 1: toss aside or you might nibble on. But funny enough,
- 21:07Speaker 1: the owner of JNC Bakery got this inspiration because back
- 21:11Speaker 1: then when she was working at a previous place, I
- 21:14Speaker 1: think customers were wondering, oh, what happens to, you know,
- 21:17Speaker 1: these cake scraps, right, the edges, and customers are actually
- 21:20Speaker 1: willing to pay for them.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Um, this is actually a bakery that has outlets in
- 21:26Speaker 1: Woodlands and East Village, and they pack the brown trimmings
- 21:30Speaker 1: from its old school butter, banana, chocolate, and other types
- 21:33Speaker 1: of cakes into bags that are priced at $4 and
- 21:37Speaker 1: people are going crazy for it. The video has gone
- 21:40Speaker 1: viral on TikTok and
- 21:42Speaker 1: I think they're often sold out by noon. What a
- 21:45Speaker 1: way to save and and reduce wastage, you know, I
- 21:48Speaker 1: really have to applaud them for it and because of
- 21:51Speaker 1: the viral TikTok video as well, it just sells out
- 21:53Speaker 1: even faster now.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So, I got to give a big round of applause
- 21:56Speaker 1: and kudos to the owners of JNC. They're located at
- 21:59Speaker 1: 15 Woodlands Loop and another one at 430 Upper Changi Road,
- 22:04Speaker 1: if either one is convenient for you to check out. Now, this,
- 22:07Speaker 1: I really hope it doesn't happen to anyone if you're
- 22:10Speaker 1: making a move right now and, you know, with a
- 22:13Speaker 1: big move comes a lot of anxiety and stress already, right?
- 22:15Speaker 1: I know this because one of my close friends, in fact,
- 22:18Speaker 1: two of my close friends are moving right now, and
- 22:22Speaker 1: one of them actually is doing it solo. She's moving
- 22:25Speaker 1: by herself, so I offered my help to, you know,
- 22:27Speaker 1: move some of her personal stuff like drive it over
- 22:29Speaker 1: and things like that, but the rest, obviously, they'll have
- 22:32Speaker 1: to pay a moving company to do so, right?
- 22:34Speaker 1: So this lady who was making a move from Serangoon
- 22:37Speaker 1: to Coven, she got a, she got an invoice and
- 22:41Speaker 1: she got a quote to pay the moving company about $228.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That was the moving fee. OK. So that was, I'm
- 22:48Speaker 1: assuming what was agreed upon according to the story. However,
- 22:53Speaker 1: she received a message from them.
- 22:55Speaker 1: And their message said, hey, take note that the lorry
- 22:58Speaker 1: can only be parked outside the condo. So there's going
- 23:01Speaker 1: to be additional charges for the long pushing distance. My
- 23:06Speaker 1: supervisor will assess the distance, but please acknowledge this message,
- 23:11Speaker 1: to which you would think to yourself, OK, I mean,
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah, la, I don't mind paying you a little bit
- 23:16Speaker 1: extra if there's some inconvenience, right? But she ended up
- 23:19Speaker 1: with a bill of $1,796. Wait, what? I mean, that's
- 23:25Speaker 1: a little crazy. That's a little crazy. But on the
- 23:29Speaker 1: flip side,
- 23:31Speaker 1: The moving company had their side of the story too.
- 23:33Speaker 1: They said that the woman had more than 5 times
- 23:36Speaker 1: the amount of items declared, including several large pieces of furniture,
- 23:42Speaker 1: and they explained that such fees apply because lorries can
- 23:45Speaker 1: only be parked outside the apartment as a result. You know,
- 23:48Speaker 1: these workers will have to push, manually push it in.
- 23:52Speaker 1: So now I'm just like, OK, like there are two
- 23:54Speaker 1: sides of the story now.
- 23:55Speaker 1: This lady also, I mean, I hope that she was,
- 23:59Speaker 1: she fully declared the stuff, but from the, from the
- 24:01Speaker 1: sound of it, from the moving company, she didn't quite declare.
- 24:05Speaker 1: So let's just see how this goes. I mean, it's
- 24:06Speaker 1: more of a he said she said situation right now.
- 24:08Speaker 1: I'm not sure if anyone has to come in and
- 24:10Speaker 1: intervene or, or mediate this situation, but if you are
- 24:15Speaker 1: ever going to move anytime soon,
- 24:17Speaker 1: Just get everything in order in black and white. No
- 24:20Speaker 1: point hiding anything because you don't want any, you know,
- 24:23Speaker 1: random last-minute charges to come about. That would be a nightmare. Um, hopefully,
- 24:27Speaker 1: Joe will be back with us tomorrow and we also
- 24:30Speaker 1: just want to give you all the love. You must
- 24:32Speaker 1: have completed your English Listening Comprehension paper held earlier today
- 24:36Speaker 1: already if you're a PSLE student. So hopefully that went
- 24:38Speaker 1: well for you. And I think um for those of
- 24:41Speaker 1: you who are not sitting for any examinations,
- 24:44Speaker 1: You know, just show support to your siblings or your
- 24:47Speaker 1: friends or if you know someone who is going through that,
- 24:49Speaker 1: it must be very stressful because then the actual papers
- 24:52Speaker 1: will begin, I believe, 24th of September onwards. All the best.
- 24:56Speaker 1: We are sending you love and energy every single day
- 24:59Speaker 1: here on the shock circuit, so we'll catch you tomorrow
- 25:01Speaker 1: again at 6:00 a.m.
