Transcript
- 0:35None. And we're back in The Dirty old
- 0:57art classroom where we host our weekly episodes of Anime Club.
- 1:04If you like snacks, if you like anime, then you are in the right
- 1:07place. So give us a like, hit that
- 1:09subscribe button and stick around.
- 1:12Because today we're doing Franz Ferdinand noises.
- 1:19Cyberpunk. I'm with me.
- 1:24Hey Tunes. Oh, I should have started Hey
- 1:26Tunes. And with me we've got the Gok
- 1:28himself, my wonderful Co host and probably my best chumba,
- 1:36Christopher Reid. Yeah.
- 1:40How you doing Chris buddy? Yeah, so and that you never
- 1:52would have bothered. I never would have bothered
- 1:54either, except for we set the challenge to try and watch more
- 1:57things that we hadn't seen yet. And this was one that neither of
- 2:02us had seen, but that I we and how we decided.
- 2:06So this year we're doing lots of different challenges to decide
- 2:11who gets to pick each weekly anime and this 11 purely on
- 2:17Meredith's Instagram. So we each created a promo, a
- 2:23promo video. And so actually it's not even
- 2:26really my pick. It's it's the Grams pick.
- 2:30But yeah, cyberpunk edge runners.
- 2:39Yeah, so that's my last question.
- 2:40Straight out the window straight away, which is well, you watched
- 2:44past episode 3, both of us have. So we're going to probably talk
- 2:48all the way up to episode sort of eight or 9 is where we're
- 2:51we're at currently, isn't it? So, yeah.
- 2:59Oh, who is it? Is it that we can hear and who
- 3:11can we not? Well, that's nice.
- 3:43Is it you? There we go.
- 3:45We're just doing something. Got some technical difficulties,
- 3:48folks. So Chris always yells at me
- 3:50right when we do our sound check because what what happens is we
- 3:57do the sound check, I make some noises and then I proceed to
- 4:00talk over talk over the sound check.
- 4:04So Chris can't actually hear what happened.
- 4:06And I think that's finally come to haunt us, this test
- 4:16testicles. Test, test, test.
- 4:24Yeah, Chris has been lost in the net.
- 4:28It happens. It does.
- 4:31He does. He's net runner gone deep.
- 4:33Although I think Chris, if we were talking about this before,
- 4:35weren't we? And I was like, I think Chris is
- 4:37a nomad. I think rather than a kind of
- 4:39like, I suppose you could still be a nomad net runner, but I see
- 4:44you more as like a kind of, I see more grease, grease monkey
- 4:50roles. You'd be climbing through vents
- 5:02to break into an apartment that you'd been evicted from.
- 5:06It looks like we've got victory, so you're back.
- 5:09Welcome back to Night City. Good to have you with us, Jim.
- 5:21So, yeah, so some people will have played Cyberpunk the game,
- 5:24but for people who haven't played the game and haven't seen
- 5:26the anime, what would you say that this is about?
- 5:29Chris? Oh, Chris, you've gone again,
- 5:35apparently. I don't think so, because I can
- 5:44see in OBS that you're registering as making noise.
- 6:05Test, test, test. Yeah, myself, yeah.
- 6:18Yeah, OK. We might be doing a solo podcast
- 6:35today where I just briefly talk about cyberpunk and then we
- 6:38count some Jelly beans. Oh, we, they heard the test,
- 6:42test, test. But we did.
- 6:44They did last time too. Maybe you just have to stay real
- 6:47close to the mic. Test, test, test.
- 6:58How's that? Can you hear us now?
- 7:02I can hear myself. Oh, wait for couch confirmation,
- 7:14Yeah. This is going to be hard because
- 7:17I can hear me so talk. Oh, you're.
- 7:20Just going to have to not throw yourself off.
- 7:21It's like you've got a Johnny Silver hands in your head.
- 7:24Oh no, Jordan is. I didn't like that character.
- 7:29What you didn't like? You didn't like?
- 7:34Charlie Reeves, I don't think he's a likable character.
- 7:37I don't think you're supposed to like him.
- 7:38He's a terrorist. He's a.
- 7:40He's a narcissistic egomaniac terrorist.
- 7:44Terrorist of freedom fighter. Terrorist.
- 7:49Yeah. Yeah, but so let's get back.
- 8:00For those who haven't seen anime, what would you say it was
- 8:06about? It's a futuristic The List
- 8:13wasteland because, and it's about a bloke called David.
- 8:20David Martinez. Yes.
- 8:22Who was thrust in this? Sorry, this is horrible.
- 8:26He's, Yeah. He's, he's born at this life
- 8:30where his mom's a really overworked woman trying to put
- 8:33him through a fancy school. And he's kind of been short
- 8:38drawn the short store because he doesn't want to do it.
- 8:41But he wants to impress his mom because she's working so hard
- 8:44for it and life just doesn't go his way.
- 8:47The rich kids at school beat them all.
- 8:51Like, yeah. And then, yeah.
- 8:55They make his life kind of miserable.
- 8:58And it kind of falls in the wrong crowd after his Barber
- 9:02dies. Yeah, So she dies in it.
- 9:06It starts off, I would say in a very kind of like bleak.
- 9:09So it's it's set in the world of Light City.
- 9:12I think this actually does a better job than the game of
- 9:16expressing how truly bleak Light City is, especially if you are
- 9:23like, if you don't have money and you're struggling to get by
- 9:28and you don't have like, yeah, resources or like a crew to run
- 9:35with. Night City is a horrible place
- 9:37to be. And it starts off in, if you can
- 9:40imagine a world where you have to pay for all sorts of
- 9:43healthcare and emergency services.
- 9:46And what happens is him and his mother get into a like a freak
- 9:52car accident. So there's some gangsters who
- 9:54would kind of do a bit of a drive by their car gets flipped.
- 10:00His mother ends up being kind of propelled out of the car.
- 10:05And then they get finally get taken to like by like a kind of
- 10:09sort of public ish low cost, low cost hospital.
- 10:16And and because that because they haven't can't afford
- 10:24resuscitation. So basically his mother starts
- 10:27to stabilise, then something goes wrong.
- 10:29But they because they've run out of money and they can't afford
- 10:32stabilisation. What happens is the she dies and
- 10:39then he's left like this kid with all this debt, he can't pay
- 10:42his rent and he ends up falling in with like a bunch of edge
- 10:46runners who are kind of mercenary style, a bit of a
- 10:50drive by. Yeah, it probably is like a bit
- 10:56of an understatement, but yeah, so.
- 11:01So he kind of gets propelled and the edge runners are are
- 11:04criminals basically. They do jobs for people.
- 11:08And after his mum dies, he finds Sandivistan, which is a type of
- 11:17spinal implant that allows you to move incredibly fast.
- 11:21Massively OP and like all I would say once you get it in the
- 11:26game it's like, oh you can kind of face any scenario.
- 11:29It's OP in the game. In the anime, it's also OP, but
- 11:32they do a nice job of balancing it for the story with some kind
- 11:36of like, human biology limits. So they kind of do a good job of
- 11:40reshaping it so that it doesn't completely break the story and
- 11:43he doesn't become like a godchild.
- 11:46And yeah, and from there it's basically just about him
- 11:50struggling to survive and like, but also a little bit just
- 11:55trying to fit in with his new family and trying to like, get
- 11:59the girl. And there's a kind of nice mix
- 12:02between like scenes where you're unpacking the relationship
- 12:07between him and the other edge runners versus that action
- 12:10scenes. And the action scenes in this
- 12:13are so much fun. And they really, you can tell
- 12:18that they sink a lot of the budget.
- 12:19They, they do the same thing that I think Ghosts in the Shell
- 12:22does really well. The original Ghosts in the
- 12:25Shell, which is they sink the budget into the action scenes
- 12:29and then they find interesting ways of showing the quieter
- 12:34scenes and framing them so that you don't have to have a lot of
- 12:38animation, if that makes sense. Like I think it's a carefully
- 12:41thought out anime. The studio is the same studio
- 12:45that does Killer Kill and delicious in dungeon.
- 12:49So it is a bit of a feast for the eyes as well because you
- 12:52know, they are very Technicolor. They are very detailed.
- 12:57And he was he was saying before that a lot of the soundtrack art
- 13:02is made by music musicians that you will know and love,
- 13:06especially if you're Chris and I stay at you.
- 13:08Because I think we do think that this is an anime made for people
- 13:11who were like rocking out to Franz Ferdinand in their teams
- 13:15because they do like the opening credits and it is a tune.
- 13:20And I was watching this with Ben Murder Half, and he was like,
- 13:25and we were both like this. Do we just we forget how much we
- 13:30loved Franz Ferdinand? Wow.
- 13:41Yeah, it does. And it feels like, and it's also
- 13:43like neon and Technicolor. Like the anime is kind of very
- 13:48bright. It feels really well suited, I
- 13:51think for anime, this type of setting, they've done a really
- 13:54good job of translating the setting of the game into the
- 13:59yeah, into the into the like a different medium for
- 14:04storytelling. It's it's a good one, I think I
- 14:06would say. Yeah.
- 14:10Yeah. We're currently, when I say we,
- 14:12I'm watching Ben play through a game and I get to make decisions
- 14:17occasionally, usually when it comes to like the romance
- 14:21options. We're currently wooing Pan Am.
- 14:23It's a whole thing. She's very cool.
- 14:29Yeah, I did. I've also been calling everyone
- 14:33tune this week. Yeah.
- 14:49Yeah, yeah, the language is a really fun part of it, I think.
- 14:56Yeah, back to single player. I like that we're calling it
- 15:03single player though. So yeah, no, I would say that
- 15:06this is a really brightly coloured one.
- 15:08I'm just going to keep going. Well, Chris has a, Chris has a
- 15:11like a small meant to be in the background because we're all
- 15:14entitled to a meant to be occasionally, yeah.
- 15:20It's fine. I'll I'll try.
- 15:22And work it. And so, yeah.
- 15:27What was your kind of initial impressions on animation style,
- 15:29Chris? It was, it was amazing, like
- 15:34even the like avid colors. It was kind of what I wanted,
- 15:40but modern Ghost the Shell to be, even though in July there is
- 15:44a new Ghost the Shell coming out.
- 15:45I know and I'm not sure I know I've I saw that you posted that
- 15:49today and I ghost in the shells up there with like my favorite,
- 15:54favorite anime and I'm not sure that I'm not sure about the
- 15:59poster. It makes me nervous because they
- 16:01are just. It doesn't look like Ghost in
- 16:03the shell to me. Yeah, not sure about the boobs.
- 16:12I do you know what the boobs are a big part of it.
- 16:15But then like Major Kuznagi does have like she is like a sexy bod
- 16:19in the in the first ones. It just feels, I don't know, it
- 16:24just didn't feel when I saw it. I didn't feel excited.
- 16:28I was like, oh, I just had like a gut reaction of, Oh, I'm not
- 16:32sure I'm going to like this. Yeah, I mean, I'm.
- 16:37I would say that this feels more like a legacy for Ghost in the
- 16:40Shell than the poster that was released.
- 16:43Yeah, I left the juries out on that one.
- 16:46I think about what the animation of this, it's bright, colourful,
- 16:51and it's familiar because I've played the game and I don't
- 16:53know, because it's familiar to us.
- 16:56That's why it took us back to like, yeah, with a Franz
- 17:00Ferdinand. I'm like, yeah, of course, to
- 17:02the shell. Then it just clicked.
- 17:03I mean, was it Lucy is Kusanagi? Oh, this is like a blonde
- 17:08Kusanagi. There's a split and also Kiwis
- 17:11is his the net, even the Bob and Kiwi has a similar Bob and.
- 17:17Kiwi. And the there are some weird
- 17:25arguments. I have a question in a minute
- 17:27for you, Chris, about like what what implants, etcetera you
- 17:31would choose to get right. But she Kiwi also has blue
- 17:35nipples, which I think is a wild choice of like of all the things
- 17:39that you could do to yourself in a world like cyberpunk, like
- 17:42drop a few grand on some blue nipples.
- 17:47Just feels like it just feels like an odd choice.
- 17:49She also has no lower face. So she has this, like, weird
- 17:53mask over her face, which is kind of low key horrifying.
- 18:00Yeah. But it is.
- 18:01It is. And it also is very, I would say
- 18:03very grotesque. There's a bit of body horror
- 18:05twisted into this, into the cybernetics and love it things
- 18:09for sure, which is, yeah, it will hit the kind of horror
- 18:12crowd in the right way. So it does a good job of
- 18:18blending kind of the elements of the game with some kind of new
- 18:23things that you can only do in, I think you can really only do
- 18:27in animation that probably wouldn't work in the game quite
- 18:31so well. Well, I mean, yeah, even looking
- 18:35at the difference in the game and the anime, this it goes into
- 18:39some things that it doesn't like the cyber, the mentalness.
- 18:43What's it called again? Cyber Psycho.
- 18:46Cyber Cycles. I mean, that was the side
- 18:49mission, and it doesn't affect the main character in the game,
- 18:53but in this one it's like a very real threat to everyone.
- 18:56Yeah, that's when you have augmentations to your body.
- 19:01It makes you go mental basically.
- 19:04And the other thing I really liked is when he had the Sam
- 19:07Divestan put in, not that I've been practicing that word just
- 19:10so I can throw it out off the calf like it was really easy.
- 19:14But when he has that put in, which is the spinal implant,
- 19:17that makes him move really fast. Yeah.
- 19:20He gets like at one point he uses it too much too often and
- 19:24just like his body starts to reject it basically.
- 19:27And in it they're all like, well, what meds are you taking?
- 19:31As if it's like once you get implants, you have to take meds
- 19:34to stop your body rejecting them, which makes perfect
- 19:36scientific sense. You know, I don't think it's
- 19:39really touched on in the game. It's not like a survival
- 19:41mechanic that you have to do. It's not a thing in the game.
- 19:47It's not so much a thing in the game, but I kind of love that
- 19:49they built it into this because it kind of it takes it deeper
- 19:53into the sci-fi realm and it's a nice artistic task.
- 19:58Everyone become an OP though as well isn't it?
- 20:01It does, yeah. And that's the other thing about
- 20:03cyber psychosis is that you can mod yourself to fuck, but at
- 20:07what cost? There is a cost to kind of like
- 20:10changing your your bodies. Which brings me onto my question
- 20:14for the week, which is like, OK, so we're in Night City, you've
- 20:19got a few 100 grand to spend on whatever cyber implants you
- 20:23want, right? What you're going for?
- 20:26What's your top three? So a lot of the enhancements are
- 20:32either for netburners for diving at the web or the offensives or
- 20:39the weapons. I'll probably choose neither.
- 20:42Something that I would actually use so I would have.
- 20:47Thumbs are lighter. Thumbs are lighter and a banner
- 20:54attachment for me. Hands like a finger, so it's
- 20:59like. You're basically just turning
- 21:04yourself into a toolbox is what's happening, hey?
- 21:06Watch, I'm just sick of carrying toolboxes.
- 21:09I'd want to jump really high, so like I want to look like I've I
- 21:16could squat 1000 times. Little junk.
- 21:21Jacksonville studio says, hey James, my nips would also be a
- 21:252000 Watt halogen torch is blink twice to turn them on.
- 21:33Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, I just realized Edge Edge
- 21:36runners also Jackson Wolf is also just put something in the
- 21:39chat has made me realize why they're called edge runners
- 21:41because they're running on the edge of just the right amount of
- 21:44Chrome to be a badass and only a slightly bit psychotic.
- 21:49Yeah, I would have if we were going.
- 21:54No, I wouldn't wear the hat. Look at that.
- 22:02Basically, Chris wants to be, he wants his arms to be Inspector
- 22:05Gadget arms. Yeah.
- 22:09Swiss Army, Chris. What?
- 22:11What would you get? I think I would be, I would like
- 22:18to be able to run really fast and like they have, they have an
- 22:21option to have like your lungs. Like at one point he gets his
- 22:25lungs reinforced. He would which I think would be
- 22:32good. I do think I would also like the
- 22:37ability to like decide when I take on calories or not.
- 22:40So some sort of stunt like automatic diet stomach where I
- 22:45could just eat whatever I want but not have to worry about my
- 22:47body metabolising stuff would be handy.
- 22:51There are a lot of bigger people in this other.
- 22:54Well, no, but you do have some different body shapes, which I
- 22:57do appreciate because Dorio in it is like a hench lady.
- 23:03Oh Dorio MVP. Oh, don't make that face.
- 23:11I know. Sorry, subconsciously make a
- 23:14face there. Yes, subconsciously my ass.
- 23:18And then I think I'd also, I'd probably want some sort of like
- 23:22net running type implants. I think I I would very quickly
- 23:25be happy to live in a virtual world.
- 23:28I think I'm if I'm running in a, if I'm running in cyberpunk, I'm
- 23:33not running at all. I'm sitting in a ice bath and
- 23:37yeah, doing the brain thing. Would that be my third one?
- 23:43Get files. You can control things
- 23:44electronically. Yeah.
- 23:48Such what you do. Yeah, I'd probably just, I'd
- 23:51spend most of my time probably just fucking fucking with my
- 23:54friends, making life a bit easier for everybody.
- 23:58Which I think will be amazing frozen doors of people's faces
- 24:02just as they get up to it. So.
- 24:04I'd, I'm really like, really like waiting for them to be
- 24:07like, oh, and then as they give up and turn away, then you open
- 24:11again. I did also wonder if like,
- 24:17because you know, there are lots of like physical augmentations
- 24:22that you could have as well. So things like having hair that
- 24:25I could just change colour with a thought or they also have
- 24:29nails. And it LED us down a YouTube
- 24:32thing and Ben found a video of someone who's created like
- 24:38actual photo. Some, I can't remember what
- 24:42they're called, but they're like nails which change color based
- 24:45on an app on your nails. They're like robot nails.
- 24:48They're like tiny little screens, fake screen nails,
- 24:52stuff like that. I would be all over in a
- 24:55cyberpunk world. I'd be like tricking myself out
- 24:57with all the kind of weird fashion bangs.
- 25:01I thought you're going to see I've seen them drinks like you
- 25:05dip in the nails dripping the drinks to see if the spiked.
- 25:10Oh what? On your nails.
- 25:13I think it's like a coat, not something if it does something
- 25:16cheap. That's clever, that's saving
- 25:19lives, that kind of thing. I don't know if it was in the I
- 25:22video though I'm I'm not good enough to tell the difference.
- 25:24Oh yeah, it could be. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah would be
- 25:28good. A dream, actually, Lucetta has
- 25:31just put a true dystopian world where my where your dream job is
- 25:35Alexa. I basically do I want to be the
- 25:37Alexa of happy friend group, but I think I might be a bit
- 25:43obstinate. I would be like, like people
- 25:46would be like Phoebe players, players this, you know, play
- 25:49some music and I'd be like, OK, you're going to listen to my
- 25:54music. What, You just open your mouth,
- 25:56the speaker would stop. Yeah.
- 26:02Oh, was it bringing ice? Or might be real.
- 26:05Oh, I think that's a. That's a great invention.
- 26:09Yeah, I draw. Especially my greens.
- 26:14And one or both, but also screens.
- 26:18Can you imagine you could have like little patterns that
- 26:20change? You could have like like you
- 26:23could have like little smiley faces.
- 26:25If you have to tell me, I mean I.
- 26:31Don't know why my nails are horrible and tiny so.
- 26:35Mine are quite long at the moment.
- 26:37They do need cutting because I've I've stopped being able to
- 26:40play musical instruments because they've gotten so long.
- 26:42Stop. Absolutely not savage.
- 26:50So yeah. But also I did realise you are
- 26:52actually legitimately and Cyborg, so between the two of us
- 26:55you are closer to a cyberpunk Night City universe.
- 26:58Oh yeah, than I am, which is cool.
- 27:01I'm shouting at this box at low part.
- 27:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. So what was some of that
- 27:11highlights? So we've we've got, we've both
- 27:14you've watched up to episode 910.
- 27:18I've I've watched up to episode 9, I think, which is like the
- 27:22big fight with Maine and Daario. Yeah.
- 27:30Or Daario, Daario, Daario what? Yeah.
- 27:36What have been some of the highlights for you so far is?
- 27:41So in general, I would say that animation, that action scenes,
- 27:45the story. Just good all round and like
- 27:51every episode has been better than the last.
- 27:54Like it builds beautifully. I.
- 27:58Mean even talk about men's fight at the end and you just like,
- 28:04we've got to like sit back and like it's like driving home with
- 28:10a radio off kind of moment where you're like, I'm just going to
- 28:13absorb this and take it in genuinely that from this.
- 28:18I didn't either because I thought it was, oh, this will be
- 28:21just a bit of fun. It's actually quite got some
- 28:23really emotional, strong emotional beats.
- 28:27In fact, Maine because it's a Maine.
- 28:30There's another spoiler that, but if you've come to anime club
- 28:33not expecting spoilers from an anime that was released like
- 28:36years ago, then you know it is what it is.
- 28:42But so Maine goes cyber psycho and it's the last person that
- 28:47you want to go cyber psycho. He's like the rock of the group.
- 28:50He's basically the dad. Yeah.
- 28:54And he's like taken in. It's like a real hard hitting
- 28:57moment for David Martinez, who he's taken in and kind of
- 29:00rescued from and given purpose to.
- 29:05You also have him going up against the love of his life,
- 29:09Daurio. So they're both like, and
- 29:10they're both these huge characters having this fight.
- 29:16And when it happened, I literally my jaw dropped to the
- 29:19floor. I was like, couldn't believe,
- 29:24yeah, how that plays out. But they do a really lovely
- 29:27thing for me, which I thought was really artful, which is as
- 29:31he's going cyber psycho, What? It's not just him losing his
- 29:34mind randomly. It's him in a kind of delusional
- 29:40state. So he sees everything as a like
- 29:43a desert and he's kind of running through.
- 29:50Yeah, he's kind of running through like, so the people that
- 29:53he's fighting, who are some of them are his friends.
- 29:56He doesn't see them as his friends.
- 29:57So for him, he's actually acting completely logically in response
- 30:03to what he's seeing. It's just that what he's seeing
- 30:05isn't real. And never before have I seen
- 30:07such a perfect depiction of what it is like to lose your mind
- 30:12where you think you are the you think you are responding
- 30:15logically. Like I don't think anyone who
- 30:18has a kind that kind of breakdown or that kind of
- 30:21psychosis knows that they haven't.
- 30:23Like they think they're in a world that is real and their
- 30:27actions are rational and it's only because their reality is
- 30:33altered and different. Have seen it before, the only
- 30:36thing I can compare it to is portrayals of dementia and I'll
- 30:40say MAS. Yeah, they do do it a bit in
- 30:44Death of a Salesman as well, if we're going to get real arty
- 30:46with it. Yeah, because one of the.
- 30:50Yeah. It was just like, I thought he
- 30:53was going back to his like childhood before he was a knight
- 30:58city or something. I thought he was like, he's like
- 31:01almost like a military past. But it was, yeah, heartbreaking
- 31:09right up until the end, right. Because he at 1, so he suddenly
- 31:12he realizes he basically shoots the love of his life.
- 31:15And then at one point he's like piling up like logs to like
- 31:21cremate her body, but it's just chunk.
- 31:24It's like a funeral pyre. And even then it's like he's
- 31:27just like tossing like chunks of metal and spikes.
- 31:32It's just so artful, really is like, it really is For me, that
- 31:38was one of the highlights. And I feel like every episode
- 31:41had a moment where I was like, oh, that's really clever the way
- 31:44they've done that. It's just really artful.
- 31:46And the game kind of has that as well.
- 31:47Like, the game has a lot of detail to it, even down to the
- 31:51fact that all the missions are named after songs, because
- 31:54obviously you've got Johnny Silverhand in your head who is
- 31:57like a former rock star. Like there is a level of world
- 32:02building and attention to detail, and Cyberpunk
- 32:05edgerunners take it to a next level, I think, than the game.
- 32:11Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely reliveable.
- 32:16Do a game. Format.
- 32:19Basically, that's basically what this anime is.
- 32:23So now I really loved it. It's so good and I will be
- 32:27finishing it. It makes it makes me want to
- 32:30play the game again because it does to know and adds more
- 32:35depths to it. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:40And actually they've. So this is what Ben was telling
- 32:43me earlier because we were. So there's a, there's a scene
- 32:47where you're like in the start, it like the apartment that you
- 32:50started in in Night City. And just like he was just like,
- 32:55oh, I'm just going to leave, leave the flat.
- 32:56And he for the first time ever went upstairs and he was like,
- 32:59Oh, I've never been up here before.
- 33:01And then he came across a door with an eviction notice on it.
- 33:04And we were like, is that supposed to be David Martinez's
- 33:08apartment? And apparently they did a lot of
- 33:10tie insurance. Like after the anime was
- 33:12released, they did a lot of tie insurance to like to the game.
- 33:17So I think if you've, I think it's one of those things where
- 33:20if you're a fan of the game and then you go and watch the anime,
- 33:24it adds a new appreciation to the game as well.
- 33:29Having that kind of detail is amazing.
- 33:31And you do see the occasional character pop up who is in the
- 33:34anime, which is awesome. But have you noticed any of the
- 33:39characters in the anime from the game?
- 33:43Yeah, yeah. So there's one I forget what
- 33:45she's called. I'm obsessed with her.
- 33:47I keep calling her. See, this is the problem.
- 33:49I can't remember her actual name.
- 33:51I call her Mummy because she gives me Helen Mirren vibes in
- 33:57the game. But she's like one of their sort
- 33:59of information broker type characters and she appears in
- 34:04the anime. And when she pops up, Ben
- 34:06pointed it out and I was like, oh, mummy.
- 34:10Is that the very weird Chinese gun?
- 34:14No, but Takamura is also appears or is mentioned in the anime and
- 34:22Takamura is the the guy rogue. That's it.
- 34:26Thank you. Jackson Wolf Studios Rogue
- 34:28appears. Because I know what Jacksonville
- 34:32studio might know this, but there's a guy that you have to
- 34:35fight in the game that is an absolute tank and he's
- 34:39referenced in the next episode. Nice.
- 34:44Oh, I look forward to seeing that.
- 34:47Yeah, yeah, yeah. Some of the fights in the game
- 34:49are very tough. And it makes me pleased that I
- 34:51get to just sit back and watch the story bits of it, because I
- 34:54think if I was left alone with the game, I would have raged
- 34:57quit it a long time ago. But luckily Ben is a much better
- 35:02game than I have. That's nice.
- 35:08Yeah. So we've posted like they
- 35:10completely like blows blew us both out of the water.
- 35:14Like I think maybe the best thing I've watched all year so
- 35:16far for anime Club. Say it's a giant.
- 35:20Probably, yeah. 30th January, ending January on a high.
- 35:28What are we going? Well, actually first of all, we
- 35:32have, we have, we have done a challenge this week.
- 35:39So we're going to decide who gets to pick the next anime
- 35:44which was based on it, which was monster anime was your category.
- 35:48Yes. Yeah and we did a challenge
- 35:52which our friendly long time friend of Anime Club and your Co
- 35:58host in Straw Trap and the Christopher Lee podcast do.
- 36:05You wish she was there. Very kindly adjudicated for us,
- 36:10which was a how many Jelly beans are in this jar?
- 36:13So do you want to roll the tape, Chris?
- 36:17Yeah. I'll just put it though.
- 36:24Right, so beans, how many Jelly beans do you think are in this
- 36:30jar? I'll give it a little twirl for
- 36:31you. You could have about 10 seconds
- 36:33to just have a quick look. Turn it up, I want to see the
- 36:36bottom. Right.
- 36:38Right. Just sink, OK?
- 36:40I think it it's 2:50. 250, it's actually 800 and.
- 36:48Nine. I was.
- 36:49So how did you work that out? Did you sit and count them all
- 36:54out? Sand individually counted every
- 36:56single Jelly Bean. OK, so.
- 36:58Right. Thank you for that.
- 36:59I was way off. No worries, sorry, Chris, might
- 37:02be as well. Right.
- 37:04Jelly beans. Jelly beans.
- 37:05Jelly beans, right? How many Jelly beans are in this
- 37:08jar? I'm going to give it a 12, just
- 37:10like I did with Thebes. And Thebes asked if she could
- 37:13see the bottom as well. I don't care about the bump, but
- 37:17I'm going to guess 783. Right, OK.
- 37:25And the actual number of Jelly beans is 891.
- 37:32Did you count all them? I did.
- 37:33I counted them all individually. The thieves also have my same
- 37:37question. We don't know who's closest to
- 37:39it. We're not going to say.
- 37:40No, it will get revealed when there's one that revealed.
- 37:44When they wouldn't look off this call, say, I cannot believe you
- 37:48guessed the exact number, Chris. OK.
- 37:52Right, right, right, right, right.
- 37:56No, but OK, thanks for that. See you there, right?
- 38:03Well done. Well, just like I was like, can
- 38:05we just talk about how much I think Jelly beans are?
- 38:08Like how much capacity I think Jelly beans take up?
- 38:11There was part of me that crossed my mind where I was
- 38:13like, has Lee put like a century egg or something in the middle
- 38:16of this jar to like take up space?
- 38:20Which is why I asked to see the bottom of the jar.
- 38:22I wanted to see if I could see like if it was pure Jelly beans
- 38:26or not, but it was pure Jelly beans and I was way, way off.
- 38:29So well done Chris. What are we going to be watching
- 38:31next week? Did you want us to explain me
- 38:35thinking before I? Oh yeah, How did you get so
- 38:38close? So right, I knew that this was
- 38:42filmed before Nice Payday and he'd been complaining that he
- 38:45was skint. So I checked Amazon or Jelly
- 38:51beans and I was like I know kilo goes for about a tenner, it's
- 38:55like that. That's about the right amounts
- 38:57he would pull for and then up. Then I googled how many Jelly
- 39:03beans are in a kilo and it's about anywhere from 900 to 1000.
- 39:08That's and some serious detective work.
- 39:13I'm actually I'm not even mad because I just pulled a number
- 39:16out my back. We'll put it on Instagram.
- 39:21Someone get about 1200 oh guest in the lower hundreds.
- 39:29So he was. OK, so he was, he was like in
- 39:32the same camp as me of like that feels like a lot of Jelly beans.
- 39:36He was in the same camp as you. As in, he was wrong.
- 39:39But yeah. Yeah.
- 39:42Yeah, So what we watching next week, then?
- 39:46Oh, Mr. Right, Mr. Reed Actually we are watching the faraway
- 39:55Paladin so but. You said not seen that one.
- 40:01It's a it's an izikai. I've never seen a 2 either.
- 40:04I'm obviously trying something new.
- 40:06It's an izikai where a child is born and gets transported to
- 40:11another world and gets raised by a mummy, a skeleton and someone
- 40:16else. And it's all about his journey
- 40:19to become a paladin. And that's all the research I've
- 40:21done. Nice, Please.
- 40:24OK. Into it hits our rules that it's
- 40:26not a horror man to me and it's not any underage stuff and then.
- 40:33Yeah, yeah. Perfect.
- 40:36OK. The fire, we're Paladin.
- 40:37I look forward to it. And then the week after, we'll
- 40:39figure out what our challenge will be soon.
- 40:41I'm on a second Jackson Wolf studio is saying that's
- 40:46cheating. I'm sorry, just revising for a
- 40:48test cover is cheap as well. Chris is when we did the Marble
- 40:56Run challenge right at the beginning, we did have to keep
- 41:01you honest. I'm willing to say that you
- 41:04used, you used what you knew about Lee to to enhance your
- 41:09guests. I don't think that's cheating.
- 41:10It is revising and I'm just impressed that you put that much
- 41:15thought into it because that's not something I would have
- 41:18expected but. Just don't like losing.
- 41:22But I did think that we were both coming to it cold.
- 41:25So I also have a bit because I didn't even know we were going
- 41:27to be doing it until I was called, pulled into a call.
- 41:32Yeah, yeah. Which is why I looked tired and
- 41:35angry. That's fine.
- 41:40I think that I think that is more cheating.
- 41:43It's the fact that you sprung it on me.
- 41:49You deliberately put me at a disadvantage, but that's fine.
- 41:53So the week after, because it's my consolation prize, is I get
- 41:56to then pick the the theme, right?
- 42:00So I would like to pick unusual animation styles.
- 42:03So an anime that has an animation style that is not like
- 42:07anything else is my theme. It's not technically a genre,
- 42:13but that's what I'm going for. And does anything spring out
- 42:18straight away? So I have two that I might
- 42:21decide, but I don't know yet. I'm going to do a bit of
- 42:23research I think and see because I've seen both of these, which
- 42:27is there's Mononoke, which has a very kind of like almost like
- 42:35paper collage animation style to it.
- 42:38And then there's a film called Tekonking Crete, which is real
- 42:43weird. Tekonking Crete.
- 42:46Tekonking Crete which is real weird but an absolute is, is a
- 42:55very fun film and I haven't seen it for a very long time, but I
- 42:58have seen it before. So I want to try and find
- 43:00something that neither of us have seen, but if I can't I'll
- 43:06pick one of them. It's interesting because it'll
- 43:09be like be on the verge of what you can class this anatomy as
- 43:14well. It will be, yeah, it will be.
- 43:17We might have. We might have some a
- 43:18controversial winner, but we're here to push boundaries, Chris.
- 43:25Anime is nothing if not serious. Life is hot.
- 43:32Life is our art, able to hit life.
- 43:34Sometimes life is strange. Not weirdly.
- 43:36The first thing I popped in my head was there's a Pokémon
- 43:40series where the it's all this, but all of the characters are
- 43:44made of felt. Pokémon Concierge.
- 43:48My son absolutely loves it. It's so lovely.
- 43:54I'm so glad Finn, he's into it. It's absolutely delightful.
- 43:59I'd allow that Relacuma. Same animation style as Relacma.
- 44:04I think it's made by the same people, which is about a woman
- 44:08who adopts a giant cuddly bear and a little bear and a little
- 44:15bird. And you have suggested.
- 44:18The I because I think Finley will love it and it's cosy as
- 44:22hell. It's quite a calm one as well,
- 44:24so it's a good one for maybe just before bed.
- 44:27I'm going to try to not do a calm one new series of Berserk.
- 44:37Nice. So any last thoughts before we
- 44:39close off? And I'm really glad that I gave
- 44:42well, you suggested this because it would have to be bossed over
- 44:46it. I've played the game Cyberpunk
- 44:482077. I loved it.
- 44:51And and it was at that stage where I was right.
- 44:55That's at the pasta. I'm not going to play that
- 44:57anymore and I I wouldn't have gave this chance a chance if he
- 45:02didn't suggest that. Nice.
- 45:05And that's, that's what's quite fun about having this new system
- 45:09that we have where it's kind of like a chance to actually just
- 45:14like really suggest the the things that you think otherwise
- 45:17we might veto if someone else had a choice.
- 45:21Yeah, I mean wouldn't need fear if it has disturbed stuff in it.
- 45:27Yeah, yeah, yeah. In which case, that's totally
- 45:29fine to be. We're not going to.
- 45:31I'd never make you watch something like that.
- 45:34Although this does have a lot of tips.
- 45:36That's the last thing I want to say.
- 45:39I think that's a plus. Blue nips, blue nips, blue nips.
- 45:44Chips. Catch you next week.
- 45:46Bye everyone.
