- 0:33to join me, and we're going to be continuing to read through

- 0:37section of Daniel as we finish off these awesome narratives,
- 0:41these stories about Daniel living in Babylonian exile.
- 0:46And then we move into this wild territories of apocalyptic
- 0:51visions and dreams. But we'll get to that later on
- 0:54in the week. Right now, all we need to do is
- 0:57stop, pause our life, take a deep breath.
- 1:02Ah, come Holy Spirit, settle our hearts.
- 1:07Let them turn to you and hear your truth and your love through
- 1:13these words. Let's read it together, friends.
- 1:17Daniel Chapter 4. King Nebuchadnezzar sent this
- 1:30message to the people of every race and nation and language
- 1:35throughout the world. Peace and prosperity to you.
- 1:39I want you all to know about the miraculous signs and wonders the
- 1:44Most High God has performed to me.
- 1:47How great are His signs? How powerful his wonders?
- 1:51His Kingdom will last forever, His rule through all
- 1:55generations. I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living in
- 1:59my palace in comfort and prosperity.
- 2:02But one night I had a dream that frightened me.
- 2:05I saw visions that terrified me as I lay in my bed, so I issued
- 2:09an order calling in all the wise men of Babylon so they could
- 2:14tell me what my dream meant. When all the magicians,
- 2:17enchanters, astrologers, and fortune tellers came in, I told
- 2:22them the dream, but they could not tell me what it meant.
- 2:25At last Daniel came in before me, and I told him the dream.
- 2:31He was named Beltigesar after my God, and the spirit of the holy
- 2:35gods is in him. I said to him, Beltages are
- 2:39chief of the magicians. I know that the spirit of the
- 2:43holy gods is in you, and that no mystery is too great for you to
- 2:48solve. Now tell me what my dream means.
- 2:52While I was lying in my bed, this is what I dreamed.
- 2:56I saw a large tree in the middle of the earth.
- 2:59The tree grew very tall and strong, reaching high into the
- 3:03heavens for all the world to see.
- 3:06It had fresh green leaves, and it was loaded with fruit for all
- 3:10to eat. Wild animals lived in its shade,
- 3:13and birds nested in its branches.
- 3:15All the world was fed from this tree.
- 3:19Then as I lay there dreaming, I saw a messenger, a holy 1,
- 3:24coming down from heaven. The messenger shouted.
- 3:28Cut down the tree and lop off its branches.
- 3:31Shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit.
- 3:35Chase the wild animals from its shade and the birds from its
- 3:38branches, but leave the stump and the roots in the ground,
- 3:42bound with a band of iron and bronze, and surrounded by tender
- 3:47grass. Now let him be drenched with the
- 3:50dew of heaven, and let him live with the wild animals among the
- 3:54plants of the field for seven periods of time.
- 3:57Let him have the mind of a wild animal instead of the mind of a
- 4:01human, for this has been decreed by the messengers.
- 4:05It is commanded by the holy ones, so that everyone may know
- 4:09that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world.
- 4:13He gives them to anyone he chooses, even to the lowliest of
- 4:17people. Beltigesar.
- 4:21That was the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had.
- 4:26Now tell me what it means, for none of the wise men of my
- 4:29Kingdom can do so. But you can tell me, because the
- 4:33spirit of the holy gods is in you.
- 4:38Upon hearing this, Daniel, also known as Beltigazar, was
- 4:42overcome for a time frightened by the meaning of the dream.
- 4:46Then the king said to him, Beltigazar, don't be alarmed by
- 4:50the dream and what it means. Beltigazar replied.
- 4:54I wish the events foretold in the dream would happen to your
- 4:58enemies, my Lord, and not to you.
- 5:01The tree you saw was growing very tall and strong, reaching
- 5:05high into the heavens for all the world to see.
- 5:08It had fresh green leaves and was loaded with fruit for all to
- 5:11eat. Wild animals lived in its shade,
- 5:15and birds nested in its branches.
- 5:17That tree, your majesty, is you, for you have grown strong and
- 5:23great. Your greatness reaches up to
- 5:26heaven, and your rule to the ends of the earth.
- 5:29Then you saw a messenger, a holy 1, coming down from heaven and
- 5:34saying, Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump
- 5:38and the roots in the ground, bound with a band of iron and
- 5:42bronze, and surrounded by tender grass.
- 5:45Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven.
- 5:47Let him live with the animals of the field for seven periods of
- 5:51time. This is what the dream means,
- 5:54Your Majesty, and what the Most High has declared will happen to
- 5:58my Lord the King. You will be driven from human
- 6:02society and you will live in the fields with the wild animals.
- 6:06You will eat grass like a cow, and you will be drenched with
- 6:09the dew of heaven. 7 periods of time will pass while you live
- 6:14this way until you learn that the Most High rules over the
- 6:19kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone He chooses.
- 6:23But the stump and the roots of the tree were left in the
- 6:26ground. This means that you will receive
- 6:29your Kingdom back again when you have learned that Heaven rules.
- 6:34King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice.
- 6:38Stop sinning and do what is right.
- 6:41Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor.
- 6:45Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.
- 6:49But all these things did happen to King Nebuchadnezzar 12 months
- 6:54later. He was taking a walk on the flat
- 6:57roof of the royal palace in Babylon.
- 6:59And as he looked out across the city, he said, Look at this
- 7:03great city of Babylon. By my own mighty power, I have
- 7:08built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my
- 7:13majestic splendour. While these words were still in
- 7:17his mouth, a voice called down from heaven.
- 7:20O King Nebuchadnezzar, this message is for you.
- 7:24You are no longer ruler of this Kingdom.
- 7:28You will be driven from human society, You will live in the
- 7:32fields with the wild animals, and you will eat grass like a
- 7:36cow. 7 periods of time will pass while you live this way until
- 7:41you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the
- 7:45world and gives them to anyone he chooses.
- 7:50That same hour the judgement was fulfilled and Nebuchadnezzar was
- 7:54driven from human society. He ate grass like a cow and he
- 7:58was drenched with the dew of heaven.
- 8:01He lived this way until his hair was as long as eagle's feathers,
- 8:05and his nails were like bird's claws.
- 8:09After this time had passed, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to
- 8:13heaven. My sanity returned, and I
- 8:16praised and worshipped the Most High and honoured the one who
- 8:20lives forever. His rule is everlasting and his
- 8:25Kingdom is eternal. All the people of the earth are
- 8:29nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the
- 8:34angels of heaven and among the people of the earth.
- 8:37No one can stop him or say to him, What do you mean by doing
- 8:41these things? When my sanity returned to me,
- 8:45so did my honour and glory and Kingdom.
- 8:50My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored as head
- 8:54of my Kingdom with even greater honour than before.
- 8:58Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honour the King
- 9:04of Heaven. All his acts are just and true,
- 9:09and he is able to humble the proud.
- 9:23Our Father, let us never be deceived or confused or
- 9:27sidetracked, but let us always know without a shadow of a doubt
- 9:32that you reign supreme. And no matter how powerful and
- 9:36glorious anything else may seem, it's power and glory is lent to
- 9:42it by You, because all power and all glory are yours.
- 9:47So we place you back in that spot of power and glory in our
- 9:52own lives, and we just surrender ourselves, our dreams, our
- 9:57ambitions, and our plans to You, our most holy, majestic, and
- 10:03wonderful God. And in the midst of all of your
- 10:07wonderfulness and your power and your majesty, you love us.
- 10:12You call us your prized possession, and we don't
- 10:16understand why that is, but boy, we're grateful.
- 10:21So here we are, your beloved people, humbly surrendering our
- 10:25lives to you. May we reflect you and your love
- 10:29and your priorities for this world.
- 10:32So shape us and use us. We love you and we are yours.
- 10:36And we pray all of this in that saving name of Jesus, Amen.
