- 0:01Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Anna Mcgibbon for November 11th.
- 0:12Today is Remembrance Day, a solemn day observed across
- 0:16Commonwealth nations to honor those who have served and
- 0:19sacrificed in the military service.
- 0:22At 11 AM on November 11th, 1918, the Armistice ending World War
- 0:28One took effect. The guns of the Western Front
- 0:32fell silent at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
- 0:37What began as Armistice Day evolved into Remembrance Day,
- 0:42standing to honor all who served and died in subsequent
- 0:46conflicts. The tradition includes observing
- 0:492 minutes of silence at 11 AM. The red poppy, inspired by
- 0:54Lieutenant Colonel John Mccrae's poem In Flanders Fields, became
- 0:59the enduring symbol of remembrance.
- 1:02The day asks us to pause, to remember, and to honor the
- 1:07courage and sacrifice that secure our freedom.
- 1:12General George S Patton captured an essential truth when he said
- 1:17it is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died.
- 1:22Rather, we should thank God that such men live.
- 1:28Patton's words shift our focus from loss to legacy.
- 1:32Yes, we feel the absence of those who gave their lives.
- 1:36But Remembrance Day isn't just about mourning.
- 1:39It's about gratitude. We're grateful that people have
- 1:43such courage, such conviction, such selflessness existed at
- 1:47all. These weren't mythical heroes.
- 1:50They were ordinary people who answered an extraordinary call.
- 1:53They chose duty over safety, service over self-interest,
- 1:58sacrifice over survival. That such people walked among
- 2:03us, fought for us, died for us, that's the miracle we honor
- 2:08today. Hadn't understood that the best
- 2:10way to honor the fallen isn't endless grief.
- 2:14It's profound gratitude for the gift of their existence and
- 2:17their sacrifice. A family friend once told us
- 2:22about the white poppy movement, an alternative symbol that
- 2:26extends remembrance to include all victims of war, not just
- 2:30military personnel. It remembers civilians caught in
- 2:34conflict and views soldiers not as heroes to celebrate, but as
- 2:40victims of war's tragedy. It was a perspective I have
- 2:44never considered. A red poppy honors sacrifice and
- 2:47service. The white poppy mourns the cost
- 2:50of conflict itself on everyone. I don't think we have to choose
- 2:55between them. Both acknowledge something true.
- 2:59There's room to honor the courage of those who serve while
- 3:03also grieving that war claims, soldiers and civilians alike,
- 3:07that young people are put in positions where such sacrifice
- 3:11becomes necessary at all. That conversation deepened my
- 3:16understanding of what we remember on this day.
- 3:19Not just valor, but loss. Not just service, but the
- 3:24profound cost war extracts from humanity.
- 3:28So today at 11 AM, observe the two minutes of silence.
- 3:33Wherever you are, Stop. Think about those who serve.
- 3:38Consider the weight of their sacrifice.
- 3:41Thank God or the universe or whatever you believe in that
- 3:46people of such courage existed. And if you see a veteran today,
- 3:51thank them. We're a poppy, red, white, or
- 3:56both. Attend a ceremony if you can.
- 4:00Remember that. Freedom isn't free, it's
- 4:03purchased by the courage of those willing to defend it, and
- 4:07we're blessed that such people lived.
- 4:11Lest we forget that's going to do it.
- 4:15For today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:16for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:21Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
