- 0:00Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 0:02Speaker 2: That's what he said, that's what he said.
- 0:07Speaker 3: We got a good old fashioned duel.
- 0:09Speaker 4: In the postgame, quotes David Peterson struggling for some starts
- 0:13Speaker 4: for the Metropolitans, and I'll read you what Carlos Mendoza,
- 0:17Speaker 4: Mets manager, said, from his perspective, he thinks the problem
- 0:23Speaker 4: Wednesday was an inability to execute his sinker inside to
- 0:28Speaker 4: Wrighty hitters. And Mendy said, quote, if he's healthy, which
- 0:33Speaker 4: he is, there's no concern. He's too good of a picture.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Here's where things get interesting. Peterson said, quote, we relied
- 0:42Speaker 4: on the sinker and the change up too much and
- 0:44Speaker 4: allowed hitters to kind of hold on this quotes a
- 0:49Speaker 4: little bit off here allowed hitters. I think that's a
- 0:53Speaker 4: different quote. Now I'm getting all mixed up. Anyway, let
- 0:58Speaker 4: me get back to this. In my eyes, it's more
- 0:59Speaker 4: of usage than it is execution from him, and he
- 1:04Speaker 4: had said he felt like they were allowing hitters to
- 1:07Speaker 4: just kind of sit over the plate. With part of
- 1:09Speaker 4: the issue here, so we can bring up the other part. Now,
- 1:13Speaker 4: let's bring that up too, and then I'll get mister
- 1:16Speaker 4: Catcher's thoughts on how to mediate something like this between pictures. Yes,
- 1:21Speaker 4: we need mediation, John Harper said, or put in here
- 1:25Speaker 4: interesting to hear Peterson disagree with Mendoz's assessment that he
- 1:29Speaker 4: hasn't gotten insight on righty hitters.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Quote.
- 1:32Speaker 4: I don't think we've gone there enough. I think we've
- 1:34Speaker 4: relied on synchron change a usage too much.
- 1:36Speaker 1: There.
- 1:37Speaker 4: It is a lot of hitters sit over the plate.
- 1:39Speaker 4: In my eyes, it's more about the usage than execution.
- 1:42Speaker 4: So Kratz, how do you handle this? I mean, who's
- 1:45Speaker 4: right and wrong? Because you're on the outside looking in
- 1:47Speaker 4: who's right and wrong? And then what do you do?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Well, ultimately there's one person that's right and wrong. It
- 1:54Speaker 2: is the picture. Because in nowhere are they going to
- 1:57Speaker 2: look up David Peterson on Baseball Reference and go, oh,
- 2:01Speaker 2: here was his era, But here was the ra on
- 2:03Speaker 2: pitches that the that the dugout called in, Or here's
- 2:08Speaker 2: the ra on pitches that Francisco Alvarez shook him off
- 2:13Speaker 2: to throw. No, it's ultimately up to David Peterson. It's
- 2:16Speaker 2: ultimately up to the pitcher, and if he has a
- 2:20Speaker 2: gripe with the usage, he's got to do the oldest
- 2:24Speaker 2: sign in Major League baseball history. But I think in
- 2:30Speaker 2: the game, when that decision has to be made, it's
- 2:34Speaker 2: too late. I'm not saying it's Francisco Alvarez's fault. I'm
- 2:36Speaker 2: not saying it's whatever coach is sending in the signs fault.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It is always will go on the shoulder of the pitcher.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Anytime a pitcher gives up a hit through the shift,
- 2:47Speaker 2: they turn around and go, oh, my goodness, are you
- 2:51Speaker 2: kidding me? You knew where the shift was, You knew
- 2:55Speaker 2: where you have success throwing a pitch. If you do
- 2:59Speaker 2: not like where you're catcher setting up because he's always
- 3:03Speaker 2: calling sinkers and change ups away, you need to bust
- 3:06Speaker 2: some dudes in. And I couldn't agree more that David
- 3:09Speaker 2: Peterson needs to throw the ball in more. And David
- 3:13Speaker 2: Peterson agrees with that. Carlos Mendoza agrees with that. So
- 3:18Speaker 2: somebody needs to throw the pitch and the only person
- 3:20Speaker 2: that can do it is David Peterson. So you can
- 3:23Speaker 2: disagree all you want. That needs to be worked out
- 3:26Speaker 2: before the start, in the start, during the start, and
- 3:29Speaker 2: when the pitch is thrown. That's whose fault it is.
- 3:34Speaker 5: Communication. Communication is all that needs to be talked about.
- 3:38Speaker 5: You can decide what you throw. It's not like the Marlins,
- 3:40Speaker 5: where they decide, you know, exactly what pitch each pitcher
- 3:44Speaker 5: is gonna do.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 5: I think when you hear a quote like that, you're like,
- 3:50Speaker 5: oh man, because you want them kind of to be
- 3:53Speaker 5: on the same page. You know, you wish you had
- 3:54Speaker 5: a conversation before the quotes went out there. So, and
- 3:58Speaker 5: I know how the Mets media work. Hey, hey, mister Peterson,
- 4:02Speaker 5: we just heard from your manager.
- 4:03Speaker 1: He said this was the problem.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Well, you know what, Actually he's wrong. I thought this
- 4:08Speaker 5: was the problem. This is how they do. They manipulate.
- 4:10Speaker 5: They do all this time stuff or you know, vice versa.
- 4:13Speaker 5: But when a player is not doing well and he's
- 4:17Speaker 5: frustrated and they come back, hey, well your manager just
- 4:20Speaker 5: explain this about the whole situation. He's like, well, I
- 4:23Speaker 5: actually thought it was this and now here. This is
- 4:27Speaker 5: how it starts. And I can't stand why they do that.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Why these reporters do this all the time. They want
- 4:34Speaker 5: to get the juice out there. I just think, and
- 4:37Speaker 5: it's the Mets too, and they find ways to do it.
- 4:39Speaker 5: So I love Drew. I think he's fantastic. I think
- 4:42Speaker 5: he's going to be fine. I don't think we should
- 4:44Speaker 5: blow this up any bigger than what it is. They
- 4:47Speaker 5: need to get on the same page, and I think
- 4:48Speaker 5: they will and get the media out of here.
- 4:51Speaker 3: No.
- 4:52Speaker 2: See, I think Todd is he has always butted heads
- 4:55Speaker 2: with the New York media.
- 4:56Speaker 1: But you know, no, no, no, I never did.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Just to okay, But the reason that Mets fans like
- 5:05Speaker 2: Todd is because he's honest. That is what fans are
- 5:09Speaker 2: looking for. That's what the New York media kind of
- 5:13Speaker 2: prays on. They're like, Oh, he's an honest guy. We
- 5:16Speaker 2: want to hear what he has to say. And they're
- 5:18Speaker 2: just getting the story out there. They're getting the story
- 5:20Speaker 2: out you know, is there is there underlying things with
- 5:23Speaker 2: David Peterson saying oh, it's it's the usage there might
- 5:28Speaker 2: be like, but the reality is when you're on a team,
- 5:31Speaker 2: I don't care if it's in New York, if it's
- 5:33Speaker 2: in Milwaukee, if it's in Pittsburgh where there's two beat writers, like,
- 5:37Speaker 2: it is all about you executing, and when you don't execute,
- 5:43Speaker 2: it's on you. He has a six to one four era.
- 5:47Speaker 2: After the season started so well for David Peterson, he
- 5:51Speaker 2: was like the one bright spot in that rotation. He
- 5:54Speaker 2: was giving them some length he was getting. Then it
- 5:57Speaker 2: just it went downhill. What is the what happened? I
- 6:01Speaker 2: choose to believe as a player, you don't just get
- 6:04Speaker 2: worse in that short amount of time. You know, he
- 6:07Speaker 2: didn't all of a sudden become like thirty five years old.
- 6:09Speaker 2: He didn't all of a sudden drop two miles per
- 6:11Speaker 2: hour on his velocity. It's not going well if you
- 6:15Speaker 2: don't like what pitches are being called. You know what,
- 6:19Speaker 2: everybody can have a little deep deep doot deep doot
- 6:22Speaker 2: on their sleeve or on their glove, and then you
- 6:25Speaker 2: take ownership for what you're doing. And to me, I
- 6:30Speaker 2: love the way David Peterson pitches, and I think he
- 6:32Speaker 2: can be a guy who, while he's not going to
- 6:34Speaker 2: surpass Freddy Peralta as the number one guy on this rotation,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I think he's a guy that still has his rotation
- 6:41Speaker 2: spot and he sees a guy like Sean and I
- 6:44Speaker 2: are making a ton of money struggling in the bullpen
- 6:47Speaker 2: trying to make that adjustment. There's a lot of guys
- 6:49Speaker 2: on this rotation, including him, that need to take ownership
- 6:53Speaker 2: of the fact that if this team's going to be
- 6:55Speaker 2: a playoff contending team, he needs to be one of
- 6:58Speaker 2: those guys up there because they have what I would
- 7:02Speaker 2: consider four other dudes in Noel McClain, Sanga's pitching really well,
- 7:06Speaker 2: Clay Holmes is doing ridiculous in his transition from the
- 7:10Speaker 2: bullpen through last year to now, and they brought in
- 7:14Speaker 2: Freddie p So there's four spots. You don't pitch well,
- 7:17Speaker 2: you might lose one of your spots if someone else
- 7:19Speaker 2: comes and steps in.
- 7:23Speaker 4: With over thirty five million downloads, what is the number

- 8:19Speaker 4: so make sure you go to seat Geek. They will
- 8:21Speaker 4: take care of you. Can we show this other tweet
- 8:26Speaker 4: about how it appears the calls are coming from Francisco
- 8:33Speaker 4: Alverrez right now. No, Kratz, you don't believe it. Here's
- 8:37Speaker 4: John Harper, who reports for US, and why he said,
- 8:39Speaker 4: in regards to pitch calling, no indication signs are coming
- 8:43Speaker 4: from the dugout. Alvarez sometimes checks his wristband, which has
- 8:46Speaker 4: info on it. Yeah, I mean that's normal before calling
- 8:49Speaker 4: a pitch, But haven't noticed him looking to the dugout
- 8:51Speaker 4: between pitches. Also, if Peterson hasn't liked the usage, he
- 8:55Speaker 4: can always shake off Kratz. I know you spent an
- 8:58Speaker 4: episode I wasn't on talking about the Mets potentially adopting this.
- 9:03Speaker 4: I have not paid any attention to this. We know
- 9:04Speaker 4: the Marlins are doing this your thoughts here.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Without seeing a game live, and I'm not talking about
- 9:10Speaker 2: it on TV without seeing it live. When you know,
- 9:14Speaker 2: there's a time that you're looking at different things. You know,
- 9:17Speaker 2: fans go to a game and they look at ball,
- 9:20Speaker 2: hit run, video board, phone, ball hit run. I'm looking
- 9:24Speaker 2: at what's the interaction with the dugout, who's calling the
- 9:27Speaker 2: running game, how do the outfielder shift, infielder shift based
- 9:31Speaker 2: on account? All those things. So without seeing a live game,
- 9:34Speaker 2: I don't know how much Francisco Alvarez is getting advice
- 9:38Speaker 2: from the dugout. But anytime you got the wristband, that's
- 9:42Speaker 2: advice from the dugout. That's all. That's all the dugouts
- 9:45Speaker 2: are doing is they have the wristband and it's on
- 9:48Speaker 2: a sheet of paper like this, big like and they're like, hmm, okay,
- 9:53Speaker 2: to two count, a good pitch right here would be
- 9:56Speaker 2: a fastball. In all Francisco Alvarez is looking at if
- 9:59Speaker 2: he looks at the wristband, it's just reiterating the things
- 10:02Speaker 2: that you should already remember. And I have no problem
- 10:05Speaker 2: with people using the wristband. If you have to lean
- 10:07Speaker 2: on it as a crutch. No, you should be more
- 10:11Speaker 2: prepared if you have to lean on it and you say,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I wonder what this guy bang. You go to it
- 10:18Speaker 2: in your pocket, you know, on your wristband, whatever it is.
- 10:20Speaker 2: It's good to have that extra backup. And I think
- 10:23Speaker 2: if there's any pitch calling from the dugout, which I
- 10:25Speaker 2: can't say there is or isn't, it's totally fine because
- 10:29Speaker 2: it's not a edict. This is what you have to throw,
- 10:33Speaker 2: And ultimately David Peterson could be like, no middle finger, dugout,
- 10:38Speaker 2: I'm throwing whatever i want. No Francisco Alvarez, I'm throwing
- 10:42Speaker 2: whatever I want.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Boom and back to the the Q and a part
- 10:49Speaker 4: of it for a moment, Todd Father. I mean, we
- 10:52Speaker 4: like to bring up topics that are interesting. So I
- 10:57Speaker 4: think there are some cases where some media members might
- 11:01Speaker 4: get under someone's skin because they keep asking the same
- 11:04Speaker 4: question over and over again. But in this case, I
- 11:06Speaker 4: don't know. I feel like they were just asking like
- 11:08Speaker 4: the basic like hey where are you at? And Mendy's
- 11:11Speaker 4: like this is what I'm seeing, in Peterson's like this
- 11:13Speaker 4: is what I'm seeing. I actually think these stories are
- 11:16Speaker 4: the good stuff because this is actually real game strategy.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I'm just saying from my fan perspective, I actually want
- 11:22Speaker 4: to hear this stuff, like I want access to this.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I think this is journalism at its finest. When we're
- 11:28Speaker 4: trying to pick a fight between Francisco Lindor and Wansta
- 11:31Speaker 4: that might not exist. I think that's where it's like,
- 11:34Speaker 4: are we pushing it here? Are we just going off rumors?
- 11:36Speaker 4: And hey, I'm not saying anything's true or not true,
- 11:38Speaker 4: but when I'm talking about like game execution and pitcher
- 11:41Speaker 4: is not on the same page as coaching staff, like,
- 11:44Speaker 4: that's good.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Shit to me.
- 11:46Speaker 4: I'm into that. I want to know, like, what's going
- 11:48Speaker 4: on here? How is this going to get figured out?
- 11:50Speaker 4: How does this apply to you know, another person's favorite team,
- 11:54Speaker 4: or even to your little league team that you know,
- 11:57Speaker 4: any of the teams that you're coaching too, Like, hey,
- 11:59Speaker 4: if the picture's pissed, how do we figure this out?
- 12:01Speaker 4: That's why I mean my first question for Kratz was like,
- 12:03Speaker 4: how do you mediate this? Because I think that's part
- 12:06Speaker 4: of it too.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I just think now it's not a big problem,
- 12:11Speaker 5: but now here's the start maybe of a trickle effect.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And I'm not saying they don't have to do their job.
- 12:18Speaker 5: I'm just saying I know, I understand how they work
- 12:21Speaker 5: if they get some juice from somebody and then they asked, hey,
- 12:24Speaker 5: listen instead of saying how do you feel? I'm not
- 12:28Speaker 5: one hundred percent certain, but I'm almost say hey, your
- 12:30Speaker 5: manager said this and that. What do you What do
- 12:32Speaker 5: you feel about that? You know what I mean? So
- 12:35Speaker 5: I get it. I get it. I'm not as a player.
- 12:38Speaker 5: I don't like it. As a fan. I'm sure they're like, oh,
- 12:41Speaker 5: here we go the Mets all over again. But or
- 12:44Speaker 5: they're like, oh, like you said, this is great, let's
- 12:47Speaker 5: work on this. So hopefully they talk. But now they're
- 12:49Speaker 5: probably gonna have to have a conversation and about you know,
- 12:53Speaker 5: where you're at. You know, I heard it, has heard that,
- 12:55Speaker 5: and hopefully it'll get on the same page.
- 12:58Speaker 2: All right, we know all this is something didn't go
- 13:00Speaker 2: well for David Peterson, But I try to read between
- 13:04Speaker 2: the lines about like the pitch calling usage. One thing
- 13:07Speaker 2: needs to be remembered. Like he pitched, and so did
- 13:11Speaker 2: everybody else on this staff besides Freddie pet He pitched
- 13:15Speaker 2: under Jeremy Hefner. Jeremy Hefner was a pitching coach. I'm
- 13:18Speaker 2: not saying he doesn't like the pitching coach. I'm just
- 13:20Speaker 2: saying this is the beginning of the season. Yes, spring
- 13:23Speaker 2: training you learn things, but now in nut cutting time,
- 13:28Speaker 2: you gotta go out and perform. And he's got a
- 13:31Speaker 2: new pitching coach that he's learning to work with, a
- 13:33Speaker 2: new pitching coach that is working with him. I was
- 13:36Speaker 2: surprised that Jeremy Heffner got ousted last year, but hey,
- 13:41Speaker 2: you know what, somebody's got to take the blame for
- 13:43Speaker 2: the fact that the Mets didn't go out and sign
- 13:46Speaker 2: any marquis free agent pitchers last year.
- 13:48Speaker 1: So Hefner was the guy.
- 13:50Speaker 2: But you know, maybe him and David Peterson had a
- 13:53Speaker 2: good connection, and you know, the pitching coach and him
- 13:55Speaker 2: are not quite connecting yet. It's it's a there's so
- 13:58Speaker 2: many dynamics that we don't know, and we're just we're
- 14:03Speaker 2: talking about hypothetical situations. But there's clearly not success right now.
- 14:07Speaker 2: And I'm assuming David Peterson wants success.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Oh yeah, exactly.
- 14:12Speaker 4: There's frustration too, and you can feel that and you
- 14:15Speaker 4: want to hear that. I mean, I think about the
- 14:17Speaker 4: Shane McClanahan quote from a couple of days ago where
- 14:21Speaker 4: he was super pissed about his performance, that that fired
- 14:23Speaker 4: me up. That's a guy who used to be towards
- 14:26Speaker 4: the top of the sport and he might get there again.
- 14:28Speaker 4: And he's barely into his first full season again and
- 14:31Speaker 4: he's already saying, Hey, I want to be much much
- 14:34Speaker 4: better than where I'm at. And that's cool. You want
- 14:37Speaker 4: to feel that. It's the same as when a pitcher struggling.
- 14:39Speaker 4: And I always use the Lanceolin example. And then he
- 14:41Speaker 4: comes on our show a few years ago and he's like, yep,
- 14:44Speaker 4: I suck right now and it is terrible, and I
- 14:48Speaker 4: am just as pissed, if not more than anyone else
- 14:51Speaker 4: on the planet. So I am going to try and
- 14:52Speaker 4: fix that. So respect but good topic, good segment. Leave
- 15:00Speaker 4: We were joining us now from the Athletic. He does
- 15:03Speaker 4: a very very good job putting together a lot of
- 15:06Speaker 4: things over at the Athletic, including the wind up every day,
- 15:10Speaker 4: the newsletter that they have there, and LEVI, we're excited
- 15:13Speaker 4: to have you here. We you know, hit the bat
- 15:15Speaker 4: phone called for you. Emergency City Connect uniforms are out
- 15:19Speaker 4: and we need your take, so please help us out.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Give us the good stuff right off the jump, like
- 15:24Speaker 4: give me one you loved, one you hated, and then
- 15:26Speaker 4: we'll dive into all of them.
- 15:28Speaker 3: What I loved I love the Pirates uniforms, the jerseys.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Not sold on the hats so much, but I love
- 15:35Speaker 3: the jerseys. I love the sort of piratey looking font
- 15:38Speaker 3: that also at the bottom it looks sinister and diggory.
- 15:42Speaker 3: But then you know, when you go to the website
- 15:45Speaker 3: and read the background of it, it's they say that,
- 15:49Speaker 3: you know, the bottom looks like the bridges that are
- 15:51Speaker 3: across the street from the from the stadium. So like
- 15:54Speaker 3: so many cool little touches. Really love the Pirates. What
- 15:58Speaker 3: I didn't like, unfortunately, because I want to give the
- 16:01Speaker 3: Rangers their flowers when they do something that isn't horrifying
- 16:06Speaker 3: on this front, like the Rangers video about Tejas and
- 16:10Speaker 3: everyone is welcome here and like it was inclusive and
- 16:13Speaker 3: that some of the little details that Poppello the Pocado
- 16:15Speaker 3: is great, like such a great story. Such a bad uniform.
- 16:19Speaker 3: It looks like the Oklahoma Sooners. And if you're from
- 16:21Speaker 3: Texas Lake, that's not what you want to look like.
- 16:24Speaker 3: You don't want to be giving Oklahoma all that credit.
- 16:27Speaker 3: So sorry, Rangers, I really like what you were going
- 16:31Speaker 3: for you Swarm for the Fences. Excellent, excellent process, poor result.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like, yeah, do you feel like there
- 16:40Speaker 2: is a better you? You even wrote you're not a
- 16:43Speaker 2: jersey purchasing person. Do you feel like the pirates did
- 16:47Speaker 2: it for you?
- 16:48Speaker 1: Will you make the oh yeah.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Three hundred and forty eight million dollars purchase of a uniform? Okay?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Good.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I was just gonna make sure that a grown man
- 16:57Speaker 2: wasn't gonna wear another man's grown man jersey unless it's
- 17:00Speaker 2: Todd fraz Yeah.
- 17:02Speaker 3: No, listen, I own one jersey, and there's a reason
- 17:06Speaker 3: that I bought it because it was a weird one.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I own a d Strange Gordon Reds jersey. And the
- 17:12Speaker 3: reason is because, first of all, De Strange Gordon never
- 17:15Speaker 3: played a regular season game for the Reds and I
- 17:17Speaker 3: got it for like eighty bucks or whatever, and it
- 17:20Speaker 3: just if you're not a baseball fan and you see
- 17:22Speaker 3: someone walking around and it just says Strange Gordon on
- 17:25Speaker 3: the back, that's a cool nickname. So that's the one
- 17:29Speaker 3: jersey that I own. So no, no, I'm not a
- 17:32Speaker 3: jersey purchaser. You know, if I see one in a
- 17:34Speaker 3: thrift shop in a few years, I might get it
- 17:36Speaker 3: for playing sandlot pickup games or whatever. But it's a
- 17:39Speaker 3: great jersey. I thought they did a great job. I
- 17:41Speaker 3: also really liked the Royals gradient, just because it's weird.
- 17:46Speaker 3: It's not what you would expect from a baseball jersey.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I think they overdid it with the hat. That hat
- 17:50Speaker 3: kind of looks like a twelve and under travel team
- 17:54Speaker 3: hat where they're like, you know, the preteens are super
- 17:58Speaker 3: into it, but an adult and wear it. But yeah,
- 18:02Speaker 3: I mean, listen, I'm also too old to be yucking
- 18:05Speaker 3: someone else's. Yeah, if you're gonna buy the hat, that's cool.
- 18:07Speaker 3: I support your.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:12Speaker 3: I'm not going to I'm not gonna buy the Reds,
- 18:14Speaker 3: but I really like the.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Jersey I want.
- 18:17Speaker 5: I want to talk about there's some jerseys every year
- 18:19Speaker 5: where the jersey color and the pant color are the same.
- 18:22Speaker 5: So I'm gonna go to the Cincinnati Reds. My biggest
- 18:25Speaker 5: gripe with them, and I love the Reds. Is that
- 18:27Speaker 5: see that they put on there all the time. I
- 18:30Speaker 5: got to know the significance of why it's always that
- 18:33Speaker 5: kind of sea that they use. But what do you
- 18:36Speaker 5: think about both color uniforms.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I like it. I think I like the red on red.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I think that's pretty sweet.
- 18:42Speaker 3: I think I like the red on red as long
- 18:46Speaker 3: as it's sort of those once in a while things.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I mean, they are these Cincinnati Reds plural red. They
- 18:50Speaker 3: use I think five different reds on this uniform, so
- 18:54Speaker 3: that's cool. I heard somewhere. This is not on the website,
- 18:58Speaker 3: so this is not canon, but I have heard somewhere
- 19:02Speaker 3: that the five stripes that they use on the sea
- 19:05Speaker 3: and I guess there's five stripes coming down from the
- 19:08Speaker 3: the statue with the water coming down. They use five
- 19:11Speaker 3: stripes for that are supposed to represent the five like
- 19:13Speaker 3: championships that the Reds have won. I've done. This is
- 19:16Speaker 3: This is me doing like Newsmax level worth of research.
- 19:20Speaker 3: This could be completely not true, but I heard there's somewhere,
- 19:25Speaker 3: So if that's true, that's kind of cool. Unless they
- 19:29Speaker 3: win the World Series this year, in which case are
- 19:30Speaker 3: they're gonna go back and add a stripe next year?
- 19:32Speaker 3: I don't know. Here's something that I think is consistent
- 19:38Speaker 3: with all of these uniforms and all the City connect
- 19:40Speaker 3: uniforms across the board is that every one of them
- 19:44Speaker 3: has a cool story. If you go to the team
- 19:46Speaker 3: website and it's you know, they explain, here's where this
- 19:48Speaker 3: came from, and the Brewers go, this is the Wisconsin sunset,
- 19:52Speaker 3: which is like a you know, a big part of
- 19:55Speaker 3: the culture, or the Orioles new hat and they go,
- 19:59Speaker 3: this was from an an eighteen eighties team, and when
- 20:02Speaker 3: Camden Yards was built, this was the logo that was
- 20:04Speaker 3: on the side of the of the bleacher seats. Oh
- 20:07Speaker 3: that's cool. I didn't know that. When you read the story,
- 20:10Speaker 3: they're all very cool. What I think some of the
- 20:13Speaker 3: teams forget to do is also stick the landing with
- 20:17Speaker 3: If you don't know that story, you should still look
- 20:19Speaker 3: at the uniform and think nice, nice, that's a cool
- 20:22Speaker 3: looking uniform. And so that for me is where the
- 20:25Speaker 3: hit miss differential comes With the City Connects. They all
- 20:29Speaker 3: have a cool story, the amount of thought put into this.
- 20:32Speaker 3: They let the creatives really go wild on this, but
- 20:36Speaker 3: I think that sometimes they just get a little too
- 20:39Speaker 3: miss the forest for the trees and forget that it's
- 20:42Speaker 3: supposed to be a good uniform too.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I completely agree with you, but these are City Connects
- 20:49Speaker 2: and they're not national connects or country connects. Is there
- 20:54Speaker 2: a city connect It could be these new ones. Oh
- 20:56Speaker 2: actually yeah, I picked from these new ones that will
- 20:59Speaker 2: connect with more than just the Rangers fans or more
- 21:03Speaker 2: than just the Reds fans in the sense that, yes,
- 21:07Speaker 2: this is a regional sport watched in a regional networks
- 21:11Speaker 2: watched well some of them. Obviously we're struggling with that too.
- 21:14Speaker 2: But is there a jersey of these new ones that
- 21:17Speaker 2: you would say, Wow, I could see like other people
- 21:20Speaker 2: wanting it, because I know when when the Padres came
- 21:23Speaker 2: out with their other ones, the Neon and everything other
- 21:26Speaker 2: you talk about travel teams, other travel teams were like, oh,
- 21:28Speaker 2: we want to we want to mimic that that like
- 21:31Speaker 2: craziness that the Padres put out. Is there one of
- 21:34Speaker 2: these that connects more nationally or is it just right
- 21:38Speaker 2: on this on the line of city connect for that
- 21:42Speaker 2: for that particular city.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I mean, you're not You're not wrong about the Padres ones.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I play on a Sandlot team and literally last week
- 21:49Speaker 3: we got a text like, Hey, should we do something
- 21:51Speaker 3: kind of like those Padres uniforms? So you're exactly right
- 21:54Speaker 3: on there. I I think the Pirates Ones just because
- 21:58Speaker 3: they're cool. Uh, We've at the Padres Dia delas Martos
- 22:03Speaker 3: up on the screen. I think that's neat. It does
- 22:06Speaker 3: look a little video gamage to me with the font,
- 22:08Speaker 3: but it is very San Diego. I think the Pirates
- 22:11Speaker 3: ones will will resonate nationwide. I think that anytime you
- 22:14Speaker 3: kind of get a little bit of an attitude with it,
- 22:16Speaker 3: there's gonna be some portion of the of the culture
- 22:19Speaker 3: that's that's into that. I think the the Royals, uh,
- 22:23Speaker 3: you know, they they they went with the bisexual lighting
- 22:26Speaker 3: on theirs, and I think that that's good. They're cool.
- 22:28Speaker 3: It's a cool uniform. I think that it just looks neat,
- 22:30Speaker 3: and I think that people who are not maybe even
- 22:32Speaker 3: necessarily baseball fans will see that and be like, that's
- 22:35Speaker 3: a fashionable jersey. I would wear that. So so I
- 22:39Speaker 3: think those two, probably more than the others are, are
- 22:42Speaker 3: more more than just a city city specific look.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I want to talk about the Atlanta Braves.
- 22:51Speaker 5: They always have like some significant the a the I
- 22:55Speaker 5: don't think they can really go wrong if they stick
- 22:57Speaker 5: to that old school you know, hang garon kind of look.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Talk a little about that.
- 23:02Speaker 5: I really like the the powder blue look on them.
- 23:05Speaker 5: I like their hat with the a kind of cursive look.
- 23:09Speaker 5: The way they do their lettering I think is pretty neat.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 3: The only knock I've heard on the Braves, either that
- 23:17Speaker 3: first or or second version, is it's supposed to be
- 23:19Speaker 3: city connects, not a throwback. And to that I say,
- 23:22Speaker 3: please shut up. These are amazing, Like every every video
- 23:26Speaker 3: they've put out. First of all, their video team kills it.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Every video was pretty good this year. I think everybody
- 23:31Speaker 3: like stepped up their game a little bit this year.
- 23:33Speaker 3: The Braves way ahead of the game. And yeah, these
- 23:36Speaker 3: uniforms are absolutely a throwback, and that's part of the
- 23:39Speaker 3: city connect like what the Braves have meant to the
- 23:42Speaker 3: city of Atlanta over the years. Anytime you've got Hank
- 23:44Speaker 3: Aaron in your history, like the Yankees are like, no,
- 23:48Speaker 3: we don't, we don't do city connects. That's our uniforms
- 23:51Speaker 3: are such a central part to what we do. We're
- 23:53Speaker 3: not gonna you know what the Dodgers did a city
- 23:55Speaker 3: connect They weren't that good, but they did them. You
- 23:59Speaker 3: can lean in to some elements of the past, and
- 24:02Speaker 3: I know the Yankees uniforms have been fine for forever
- 24:06Speaker 3: you could, you can get created, you can do it.
- 24:08Speaker 3: And I think the Braves nailed it. Yes, it is
- 24:10Speaker 3: a it is a throwback uniform. Also, it rips like
- 24:14Speaker 3: those are those are so cool. It's really hard to
- 24:17Speaker 3: go wrong with a powder blue as a once in
- 24:19Speaker 3: a while uniform. And it just harkens back to those
- 24:22Speaker 3: early days when they when they first came to Atlanta.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I love it. I honestly, I'm a little embarrassed I
- 24:28Speaker 3: had not mentioned the Braves before they released. There's a
- 24:30Speaker 3: little earlier than everybody else, so they weren't part of
- 24:33Speaker 3: today's spate of releases. But yeah, I think they've got
- 24:36Speaker 3: some of the best ones. You're gonna see these in
- 24:39Speaker 3: music videos.
- 24:41Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 24:42Speaker 2: No, that's fair, And I would and I would argue
- 24:44Speaker 2: people who say their throwbacks. I get it, their throwbacks.
- 24:48Speaker 2: But I think the Atlanta Braves connect with their city.
- 24:51Speaker 2: I think I think there's yes, there's a there's a portion,
- 24:55Speaker 2: especially when they were in the old Stadium, they were
- 24:58Speaker 2: in a different part of the city than they're now.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You know, they're not connecting with fucking hand or wherever
- 25:03Speaker 2: they're at now. So that's so I do love that
- 25:06Speaker 2: they're connecting with that part. But I have to go
- 25:08Speaker 2: to my old team, the Brewers. You typed it, yet,
- 25:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna make you say it Wisco. I spent out there.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I've never once heard anybody say Wisco. My brother in
- 25:19Speaker 2: law lives out in Wisconsin.
- 25:22Speaker 1: You know the m k E.
- 25:24Speaker 2: But in your research, I love the Jersey color. I
- 25:28Speaker 2: love everything about it. In your research, did you ever
- 25:31Speaker 2: find anybody that's ever used the word wisko.
- 25:34Speaker 3: I'll be honest, I haven't done a ton of research
- 25:36Speaker 3: on this, but I've spent time in Wisconsin. I've got
- 25:38Speaker 3: friends that live there. I've never heard them refer to
- 25:41Speaker 3: it as that. So maybe that's a new thing. Are
- 25:45Speaker 3: they trying to make fetch a thing here by sort
- 25:47Speaker 3: of inventing this phrase? I don't know. Listen, we might
- 25:51Speaker 3: kretz to you and I might just be stupid. Maybe
- 25:54Speaker 3: it Maybe it happens and we just were not aware
- 25:57Speaker 3: of it. I am fully open to the idea that, Listen,
- 26:00Speaker 3: there are going to be parts of the culture in
- 26:02Speaker 3: places I don't live that I am just not omniscient,
- 26:06Speaker 3: and I don't know so sure if that's the case, Like,
- 26:09Speaker 3: please hit me up on a blue sky or you
- 26:12Speaker 3: know whatever. Let me know if that's something that you use.
- 26:14Speaker 3: But that's not something effort. When it came up in
- 26:17Speaker 3: my group chat, that was the first thing everybody ripped
- 26:19Speaker 3: on was like, what is this? Have you ever heard
- 26:20Speaker 3: this word before?
- 26:21Speaker 1: No?
- 26:24Speaker 4: Well none of us lived there, so maybe that's a
- 26:27Speaker 4: thing right now. The only thing that I can add,
- 26:29Speaker 4: and it's probably not the best take, but I do
- 26:32Speaker 4: remember what twenty years ago looking at colleges, and I
- 26:36Speaker 4: visited Wisconsin, and there were plenty of people there that
- 26:38Speaker 4: were like, Oh, how you liking Whisco? So I think
- 26:41Speaker 4: they were talking about this. Okay, So that would be
- 26:44Speaker 4: my only take there is there were plenty of people
- 26:46Speaker 4: when I was there saying, oh, I'm thinking about Whisco, Michigan,
- 26:51Speaker 4: I you whatever, So that was brought up.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Now.
- 26:54Speaker 4: I'm sure there's going to be some people that watch
- 26:56Speaker 4: this clip and are like, oh, how dare you? It's
- 26:58Speaker 4: like the I don't know if you've ever experienced this
- 27:01Speaker 4: one San Francisco crowd when you say San fran loses
- 27:05Speaker 4: their shit? Oh yeah, how dare you? And I haven't
- 27:10Speaker 4: said it for years because of that. I think I
- 27:12Speaker 4: said it once twenty years ago on TV and I
- 27:14Speaker 4: never heard the end of it for a year, and
- 27:16Speaker 4: so I don't think it's a big deal. But some
- 27:19Speaker 4: people get really offended. We'll see what where Wisko stands.
- 27:22Speaker 4: One way or another, we're going to hear it right.
- 27:24Speaker 4: They're either going to say, how dare that's not what
- 27:26Speaker 4: we say, that was all wrong, or you guys don't
- 27:28Speaker 4: know anything because you're not from there, and that's what
- 27:30Speaker 4: we say now.
- 27:31Speaker 3: And as it was said earlier, these are not National
- 27:33Speaker 3: connect uniforms. If it works for people from there, and
- 27:36Speaker 3: that's something that is great, that's great. I'm not gonna
- 27:39Speaker 3: I'm not going to be using that phrasing, but that's cool.
- 27:43Speaker 3: And unless unless it has proven to me that that
- 27:46Speaker 3: is just a thing, and then I will have to
- 27:48Speaker 3: eat my words. And one of those words is going
- 27:50Speaker 3: to taste like cheese curds. And it'll be this one.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Real quick before we go.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'm curious. Uh, Todd and Eric both you
- 28:03Speaker 3: got the backwards baseball caps on what what do you
- 28:05Speaker 3: guys rocking today? There we go? Okay, Yankees makes sense?
- 28:10Speaker 2: I mean, is there any other color? Is there any
- 28:12Speaker 2: other color?
- 28:13Speaker 3: It's it's the Diamondbacks.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Right, No, No, it's purple Rockies.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Oh Rockies. Okay, well because the yeah, because the Diamondbacks
- 28:21Speaker 3: had purple for a while, right, like, yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 2: They've had every color. Nobody's changed jerseys more than more
- 28:27Speaker 2: than an NBA team other than the Diamondbacks, Like the
- 28:30Speaker 2: Diamondbacks and the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays I played
- 28:33Speaker 2: for them for whatever, drafted and then went back and played.
- 28:36Speaker 2: You know, based on twelve years, they changed all the time.
- 28:39Speaker 2: They were the Black Jays, they were blue, they were
- 28:41Speaker 2: a different Jays.
- 28:42Speaker 1: They were fighting.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, I'm glad that a couple of teams have
- 28:48Speaker 3: gone back to their to their standard, like the Brewers
- 28:51Speaker 3: with the the they've got their best logo of all time.
- 28:54Speaker 3: The Padres I think are in there, like they went
- 28:57Speaker 3: back to the brown and gold. I think that's great.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Uh.
- 29:00Speaker 3: And the Blue Jays seem to like have settled into
- 29:02Speaker 3: their classic look, which is which is good.
- 29:05Speaker 4: And to cap it here, the reason LEVI that Kratz
- 29:08Speaker 4: is wearing that today is we do have a Rockies
- 29:11Speaker 4: guest in t. J. Rumfield, joining us. So that's part
- 29:14Speaker 4: of the equation. Usually when we have a player guest,
- 29:17Speaker 4: we'll get that particular team's cap on this big bald size.
- 29:21Speaker 1: What are you eight?
- 29:22Speaker 3: That's eight?
- 29:23Speaker 1: Are you eight? Five eights?
- 29:25Speaker 2: Seven and five eights?
- 29:25Speaker 1: I'm just.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Regular, he's just regular. That's only a quarter size up
- 29:33Speaker 3: for me or eight the size up for me. I'm
- 29:34Speaker 3: seven and a half. So you're probably Bruce bochy.
- 29:38Speaker 1: You And probably it's like a half is a dome.
- 29:43Speaker 2: It's not like it's not like I'm like I'm like
- 29:46Speaker 2: baby Ruth or anything like that. Like pretty much me
- 29:51Speaker 2: and you, Me and you probably weigh the same. So
- 29:53Speaker 2: if we have about the same size head, yeah.
- 29:55Speaker 3: It's probably so you're one hundred and sixty pounds.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Right, yeah I have.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I am one hundred and sixty pounds.
- 30:02Speaker 3: But then there's more after that.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That's all.
- 30:07Speaker 4: This was fun, Levi.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Really appreciate it, and there's much more. Check out the
- 30:12Speaker 4: newsletter every day, the Athletic wind Up, but also check
- 30:15Speaker 4: out his specific review as he goes case by case
- 30:18Speaker 4: with more detail on these new city connects.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Thank you, Levi.
- 30:21Speaker 4: I good catching up man.
- 30:23Speaker 3: All right, take care, guys,
