Athlete Devotionals: October 23 – Fixing Eyes on Jesus
Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)
"Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sitting down at the right hand of the throne of God."
Biblical Context
This verse follows directly after the image of running with perseverance the race marked out, naming the specific focal point that makes that endurance possible, Jesus himself. His own endurance is described as motivated by joy set before him, not by ignoring the real cost, the cross and its shame, but by looking past it toward what it accomplished.
