- 0:16Speaker 1: Hope you guys are having a great New Year's accomplishing
- 0:19Speaker 1: all your New Year's resolutions and staying healthy. Welcome back
- 0:28Speaker 1: to the Richard Sherman Podcast. Mitchell, some head coaches finding jobs.
- 0:34Speaker 1: My guy, Robert Salah lands with the Tennessee Titans, I got,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Jeff Haffley ends up with the Miami Dolphins. What's going on?
- 0:44Speaker 1: If I'm being honest, Mitchell, I don't love it. I
- 0:46Speaker 1: don't love it, not because I don't love sala And
- 0:49Speaker 1: I thought he would go to established teams like Baltimore
- 0:52Speaker 1: or Pittsburgh or somewhere like that.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It just felt right.
- 0:56Speaker 1: He ended up with the Tennessee Titans, a job he
- 0:58Speaker 1: really wanted, a job he felt like he could do
- 1:00Speaker 1: great things with.
- 1:01Speaker 2: He loves cam Ward.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Obviously, one hundred million dollars and uh in salary cap
- 1:07Speaker 1: space is enticing to anybody they got a top five
- 1:10Speaker 1: draft pick, but for the most part, in terms of
- 1:16Speaker 1: roster building, the cupboards pretty bare.
- 1:19Speaker 2: You know. They they they.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Got some some some talent on the offensive side, they
- 1:23Speaker 1: got uh Simmons, but it just seems like things haven't
- 1:29Speaker 1: gone well there. And I didn't like how things ended
- 1:32Speaker 1: with Mike Vrabel. I thought he was doing a really
- 1:33Speaker 1: good job there, and I thought they got got rid
- 1:36Speaker 1: of him prematurely for no reason, after trading away his
- 1:39Speaker 1: best players and getting rid of his best players. You
- 1:41Speaker 1: trade away a J. Brown and you're like, huh, I
- 1:43Speaker 1: can't figure out why you're not winning. It's like, hey,
- 1:46Speaker 1: if you if you don't trade away a J. Brown,
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's a whole different team. You trade away the heart
- 1:53Speaker 1: of the team, Derrick Henry. You let Derrick Henry walk in.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So many things that that have happened. Obviously, they've got
- 2:00Speaker 1: uh ownership that that's trying to change everything, change that Outlook.
- 2:05Speaker 1: They got Mike Bergonzi from from the Kansas City Chiefs
- 2:09Speaker 1: uh to to run this team, to run the process.
- 2:12Speaker 2: UH.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So they got somebody who knows what championship culture looks like,
- 2:17Speaker 1: who knows how to build a championship roster, who was
- 2:19Speaker 1: who was around the dynasty of a team with with
- 2:22Speaker 1: Andy Reid.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And Patrick Mahons and all those guys.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But it's just a real uphill battle with what the
- 2:30Speaker 1: Houston Texans have, what the Jacksonville Jaguars have done with
- 2:34Speaker 1: Liam Cohen and that staff and that defense, and and
- 2:37Speaker 1: even the Indianapolis Indianapolis Colts early on in that season
- 2:42Speaker 1: with Daniel Jones and and and Jonathan Taylor and that defense.
- 2:46Speaker 2: They now have Sauce Gardner.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And and they they just it's a tough It's a
- 2:52Speaker 1: tougher division than it once was. And I think sometimes
- 2:55Speaker 1: you get in a situation where you're like, I think
- 2:58Speaker 1: I can do it, but it's such an he'll climb
- 3:00Speaker 1: and for his second head coaching job to be with
- 3:04Speaker 1: this team, it's it's him taking on a really great
- 3:08Speaker 1: challenge and if anybody can do it, he can. He's
- 3:10Speaker 1: an incredible man, an incredible leader of men, an incredible
- 3:14Speaker 1: culture builder and coach.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But this is this is tough.
- 3:19Speaker 1: This is tough They're gonna have They're gonna have their
- 3:21Speaker 1: work cut out for them in terms of getting talent
- 3:24Speaker 1: to come to Nashville, getting guys to believe and obviously
- 3:29Speaker 1: in Mitchell Green makes people believe in things that you know,
- 3:32Speaker 1: they believe in magic. You can pay them to believe
- 3:34Speaker 1: in the magic Mitchell. You can pay people to believe.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And if they can build an offensive line and defensive line,
- 3:41Speaker 1: uh that's aggressive and and and and sound In the secondary,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you know you can find corners and safeties that can
- 3:50Speaker 1: play sound football.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I'm interested to see how it goes.
- 3:55Speaker 3: You know what Richard I think after coming from the
- 3:58Speaker 3: New York Jets experience, with that being his first head
- 4:01Speaker 3: coaching job in such a high pressure environment where I
- 4:04Speaker 3: think expectations just are frankly totally unrealistic from that fan
- 4:08Speaker 3: base on a year and year a basis, I think
- 4:10Speaker 3: he takes a lower pressure job in Tennessee. I think
- 4:14Speaker 3: this fan base is fully aware this team needs some
- 4:16Speaker 3: time to develop. They need to, you know, get their
- 4:20Speaker 3: ducks in a row. From a personnel perspective, what Robert
- 4:24Speaker 3: sala is going to bring is new energy, and I
- 4:26Speaker 3: think his focus has got to be on making sure
- 4:29Speaker 3: that defense becomes a force, you know, plays with his
- 4:32Speaker 3: identity similar to what we saw in New York. I
- 4:35Speaker 3: think with the right move for him though, is who
- 4:38Speaker 3: he's going to hire at oc because Robert Sala has
- 4:41Speaker 3: already mentioned that he's going to have full control of
- 4:43Speaker 3: this defense. If he brings in somebody with experience, maybe
- 4:48Speaker 3: a former head coach, would that make you feel better
- 4:50Speaker 3: about this Tennessee Titans team and this job.
- 4:53Speaker 1: We'll see, we'll see. I've been surprised before. He got
- 4:58Speaker 1: a five year deal. Thankful for that. Hopefully it's life
- 5:02Speaker 1: changing money for him and his family. But he's going
- 5:04Speaker 1: to do a fantastic job. I think the Tennessee Titans fans,
- 5:07Speaker 1: a lot of them don't know Robert Tala and what
- 5:09Speaker 1: he brings. But he's gonna have your team playing elite defense.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You're gonna be in just about every game. And if
- 5:15Speaker 1: your young quarterback is who he's, who he's been labeled
- 5:19Speaker 1: to be, and who he's been advertised to be, you
- 5:22Speaker 1: guys will be in great hands.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Now, this move leads a vacancy at the defensive coordinator
- 5:27Speaker 3: position for the San Francisco forty nine ers. You know,
- 5:30Speaker 3: obviously we've seen this play out once and there was
- 5:33Speaker 3: a slide back in production from the San Francisco forty
- 5:36Speaker 3: nine ers. So Richard, I'm gonna ask you and we
- 5:39Speaker 3: might have some breaking news here on the Richard Truman Podcast,
- 5:42Speaker 3: where we might not. We'll see, Richard, I'm gonna pose
- 5:45Speaker 3: you with the question, here, are you gonna throw your
- 5:48Speaker 3: hat in the ring for the defensive coordinator position at
- 5:50Speaker 3: the San Francisco forty nine ers. I know we've got
- 5:53Speaker 3: a lot of folks that followed this podcast that would
- 5:55Speaker 3: love to see it. Clearly, you know football, you bring
- 5:58Speaker 3: a good energy. Know you're in and around these teams constantly. Richard,
- 6:04Speaker 3: when are you going to put your hat in the
- 6:07Speaker 3: ring of a coaching job? Because I got to tell
- 6:10Speaker 3: you something. You seem like a hand in glove fit.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Mitchell. God, dang it, you commenced me. I'm about the
- 6:18Speaker 1: text scy right now. No, no, no, Mitchell, my hat
- 6:22Speaker 1: is not going to be thrown in a ring for
- 6:23Speaker 1: the coordinator job for the San Francisco forty nine ers.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I think they're going to go with an established coordinator.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I think they they tried to go with, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: hire from within with Nick Sorenson last time, and just
- 6:37Speaker 1: didn't feel right about how things ended up. A great man,
- 6:41Speaker 1: great coach just didn't work out how they needed it to.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think they try to get an established they go
- 6:46Speaker 1: out there and put feelers out. If Jim Schwartz doesn't
- 6:48Speaker 1: get the get the job with the Cleveland Browns, I'm
- 6:53Speaker 1: sure Kyle Shanahan is gonna throw everything, including the kitchen
- 6:56Speaker 1: sink at him to try to get him in San Francisco.
- 6:58Speaker 1: That would be a home run, solute grand slam hit
- 7:01Speaker 1: if he could get a guy like that in the building.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:03Speaker 1: If he can't, I believe Raheem Morris would be a
- 7:07Speaker 1: guy that he calls and has a conversation with in
- 7:11Speaker 1: terms of that job. Those are some of the names
- 7:14Speaker 1: that I know they're interested in that That would make
- 7:17Speaker 1: make a lot of sense.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:19Speaker 1: But but you just never know how it's gonna shake out.
- 7:21Speaker 1: There's so many openings, so many, so many things to
- 7:23Speaker 1: still be determined, so many things up in the air,
- 7:25Speaker 1: so many moving parts and staffs being assembled and and
- 7:29Speaker 1: phone calls being made because there's so many friends, and hey,
- 7:32Speaker 1: I owe you a favor, and I owe you two favors,
- 7:34Speaker 1: and I owe you three favors, and and I don't
- 7:37Speaker 1: I don't get involved with all that, but it would
- 7:39Speaker 1: be fantastic if they could get one of those guys
- 7:42Speaker 1: I've heard that the name Flores floated around by the fans.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I'm not sure that will work out. I think he
- 7:47Speaker 1: gets ahead coaching job. He just looks right in Pittsburgh
- 7:50Speaker 1: for him. Uh, you know, you just see it. I
- 7:52Speaker 1: don't know if that's just the Tom lind and Tom
- 7:55Speaker 1: Land in me, but I think I think he makes
- 7:59Speaker 1: a lot of sense in Pittsburgh, and I think that's
- 8:04Speaker 1: you know, I know nothing about that process. I'm not
- 8:06Speaker 1: I have no internal information, but that would make sense
- 8:08Speaker 1: for me from the outside looking in. And so I
- 8:12Speaker 1: don't think he's an option. But we'll see, we'll see.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I know Kyle's gonna do his best to make the
- 8:17Speaker 1: right decision and get the right guy in the building
- 8:19Speaker 1: that can lead this defense and help elevate it. Gus
- 8:21Speaker 1: Bradley's obviously already in that building. A guy that's that,
- 8:25Speaker 1: that coached me and Seattle in twenty eleven twenty twelve
- 8:30Speaker 1: before going on to the Jacksonville Jaguars to be the
- 8:32Speaker 1: head coach there. A guy who understands football at a
- 8:35Speaker 1: high level, runs a great scheme, runs a sound scheme.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I'm not sure it's aggressive enough for what Kyle Shanahan
- 8:41Speaker 1: is gonna want but I'm sure he's gonna have a
- 8:44Speaker 1: chance at this job and have a chance to interview.
- 8:46Speaker 1: For my guy, kJ Wright, the fans want him to
- 8:48Speaker 1: get a chance to be a coordinator. I think he's
- 8:50Speaker 1: gonna get that, get a chance to be an LB
- 8:53Speaker 1: coach and get his own room before that. But I
- 8:56Speaker 1: know he's gonna be a coordinator here soon, no question
- 8:59Speaker 1: about that. I don't know if it'll be this year,
- 9:00Speaker 1: but in the next couple of years. I expect my
- 9:02Speaker 1: guy to Shan Shid who's been out in Miami the
- 9:05Speaker 1: last couple of years, and kJ Wright to be coordinator.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Names you hear around the world would love the league
- 9:11Speaker 2: would love to see that.
- 9:13Speaker 3: And other news, the Buffalo Bills have moved on from
- 9:15Speaker 3: Sean McDermott. Are you surprised to see this, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 3: play out so quickly. I know expectations were extremely high
- 9:22Speaker 3: for Buffalo, as they are every year, and it was
- 9:25Speaker 3: a heartbreaking loss to the Denver Broncos, But are you
- 9:28Speaker 3: surprised at all by Sean McDermott's firing.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I'm less surprised by the firing as I'm surprised by
- 9:36Speaker 1: the promotion of the GM like that's the part that
- 9:40Speaker 1: felt like one of those situations where if if you
- 9:44Speaker 1: fire the head coach, everybody got to go.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It's it's a house cleaning.
- 9:47Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like, hey, the guy who was drafted
- 9:51Speaker 1: two Pro bowlers in six drafts is the one that
- 9:56Speaker 1: keeps his job in the head coach coach, Hey, hey,
- 9:58Speaker 1: we didn't give you much to work with out there.
- 10:02Speaker 1: There's not a lot of talent at receiver. The old
- 10:05Speaker 1: line is, you got a great left tackle, but they're
- 10:07Speaker 1: a little banged up. The D line is, hey, we're
- 10:11Speaker 1: trying the secondary. We put a lot of we put
- 10:16Speaker 1: a lot of draft capital into but it didn't work
- 10:18Speaker 1: out how we wanted it to. But hey, you need
- 10:20Speaker 1: to make a super Bowl. And when he goes into
- 10:22Speaker 1: a meeting with the GM and the ownership group and
- 10:25Speaker 1: tell them, hey, you got to help me out here,
- 10:29Speaker 1: like you're not giving me a championship. This isn't a
- 10:31Speaker 1: championship roster. This isn't a Super Bowl roster. I took
- 10:34Speaker 1: it about as far as it is you can expect
- 10:36Speaker 1: it to be taken with how it's currently constructed. And
- 10:40Speaker 1: they said, what you're talking about us, get out of here.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And it's just an odd situation. And so I just
- 10:47Speaker 1: don't agree with the decision because he's a fantastic coach.
- 10:51Speaker 1: His winning percentage says that respect he has for his players. Sure,
- 10:54Speaker 1: it's been kind of a cyclical deal with them not
- 10:57Speaker 1: getting past the divisional for the past five years, and
- 11:02Speaker 1: you feel like, hey, they're kind of wasting Josh Allen's prime.
- 11:06Speaker 1: But I don't know if he's the problem. They don't
- 11:08Speaker 1: have enough talent. I honestly would have said if you
- 11:10Speaker 1: fired the GM and kept the coach, people would have
- 11:12Speaker 1: been like, yeah, I think that's the right call. You
- 11:15Speaker 1: need somebody else in there to make better decisions, to
- 11:17Speaker 1: give him more talent and better personnel. But to give
- 11:21Speaker 1: him a promotion just feels like I don't get that.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I don't get that at all, And I don't think
- 11:28Speaker 1: a lot of the people the fans in Buffalo get
- 11:30Speaker 1: it because it doesn't make a ton of sense. I mean,
- 11:32Speaker 1: they're gonna have to explain what happened and what he's
- 11:35Speaker 1: done to earn himself a promotion. With the way this
- 11:40Speaker 1: roster has looked and the way this team has performed.
- 11:45Speaker 3: You're not wrong about that at all. I mean I'm
- 11:49Speaker 3: surprised as well, because Sean McDermott, you feel like, like
- 11:52Speaker 3: you said, he's taken the car as far as you
- 11:54Speaker 3: can take it and ran out of gas because Brandon
- 11:56Speaker 3: Bean hasn't been servicing it enough. We'll see, and I
- 12:00Speaker 3: don't know how many other better options there are out
- 12:02Speaker 3: there other than Sean McDermott. Who do you think would
- 12:04Speaker 3: be the best fit. I mean, when you have Josh Allen,
- 12:08Speaker 3: I think that's really all that matters right now. With
- 12:10Speaker 3: the prospective coach looking at this opportunity.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Who looks right in Buffalo as somebody who's gone to
- 12:16Speaker 1: Buffalo a few times and and and got to interact
- 12:18Speaker 1: with their fan base in the city. You gotta almost
- 12:21Speaker 1: embody the team within the head coach like there, you
- 12:24Speaker 1: gotta have a certain look about you, and the same
- 12:26Speaker 1: it's true with Pittsburgh and Baltimore. You unfortunately Mike McDaniel
- 12:30Speaker 1: does not fit those those those teams. It works in Miami,
- 12:34Speaker 1: no question about it. I think it could work a
- 12:36Speaker 1: lot of places. I just don't think Buffalo, New York,
- 12:40Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and Baltimore are those places that it works. They
- 12:44Speaker 1: need one of those grizzly, hard hardened, football looking guys,
- 12:49Speaker 1: guys that look like their football guys with the with
- 12:51Speaker 1: the beard and the you know, just just crazy look.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I mean it's it's you. They look like football coaches
- 12:57Speaker 1: and and that's what you I expect them to have.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And Baltimore, I mean, in Buffalo, they're gonna get a
- 13:02Speaker 1: football coach who has experienced.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Ri Sure before we go, I gotta ask, you know.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Patriots owner Robert Kraft was recently on doing an interview
- 13:11Speaker 3: and he was talking about what the NFL is pushing
- 13:13Speaker 3: for the future. He says that the NFL wants to
- 13:16Speaker 3: move to eighteen regular season games, they want to reduce
- 13:18Speaker 3: preseason from three to two games, and ultimately they want
- 13:21Speaker 3: every team to play an international game each season. What
- 13:24Speaker 3: are your reaction to this.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I mean, it's not surprising. That's what they've been saying
- 13:28Speaker 1: for years. This is what they've been saying since before
- 13:29Speaker 1: we went to seventeen games. And I was in those
- 13:33Speaker 1: conversations in that CBA, and they fought their butts off
- 13:36Speaker 1: to try to get eighteen games. Our players had not accepted,
- 13:38Speaker 1: Our players needed more than they were willing to give
- 13:40Speaker 1: in order to move to eighteen games and taking away
- 13:44Speaker 1: a preseason game and doing a little bit of the
- 13:48Speaker 1: small changes that they were doing wasn't enough for us
- 13:51Speaker 1: to move that needle. And obviously I'm not as involved
- 13:53Speaker 1: in these conversations anymore, but there's gonna have to be
- 13:57Speaker 1: a larger concession in order for them to to have that.
- 14:00Speaker 1: You look at the injuries and the increase in injuries
- 14:03Speaker 1: and how many a cl injuries there's been this year
- 14:06Speaker 1: to really premium and superstar players uh throughout the National
- 14:10Speaker 1: Football League, and that's what's tough. You look at UH
- 14:13Speaker 1: Nick Bosa, you look at no further than UH Patrick
- 14:16Speaker 1: Mahomes and what he's dealt with. There's been a lot
- 14:20Speaker 1: of guys that have went down this year to major
- 14:23Speaker 1: injuries and and and some of you know, I don't
- 14:26Speaker 1: think there's any one particular cause everybody's like, oh man,
- 14:29Speaker 1: they need to practice more, they need they need more,
- 14:31Speaker 1: they need to beat up their bodies more and condition
- 14:33Speaker 1: their bodies more.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Is that the answer? Maybe?
- 14:36Speaker 1: I mean, there there were injuries before when they were
- 14:38Speaker 1: doing two days and stuff. Guys, I understand, I understand
- 14:41Speaker 1: what fans want. Guys aren't going to go back to that.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Guys aren't gonna do it. I'm sorry, they're not going
- 14:45Speaker 1: to go back to to practicing that way, and and
- 14:48Speaker 1: and and and coaches aren't going to coach that way.
- 14:50Speaker 1: You're not gonna have successful teams. I'm sorry, I sound
- 14:54Speaker 1: like an old guy, but this generation isn't built like that,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and they're not built to practice like that, so they're
- 14:58Speaker 1: going to have to find better solutions. And more games
- 15:00Speaker 1: isn't necessarily the solution to make this game less injury prone,
- 15:04Speaker 1: to make players less injury prone, putting more games on
- 15:08Speaker 1: them in there are a number of things talked about
- 15:10Speaker 1: in those meetings. Obviously they never came to fruition, but
- 15:14Speaker 1: there were talks of having a six to sixteen game limit,
- 15:17Speaker 1: which would make it really interesting to coach football games
- 15:21Speaker 1: because you'd have to find a way to quarterback the
- 15:24Speaker 1: other two plays the other two games mitchell, if every
- 15:26Speaker 1: player can only play sixteen games. And obviously that didn't
- 15:29Speaker 1: end up being something that made its way into the
- 15:33Speaker 1: collective bargain agreement, but it was a conversation for a
- 15:36Speaker 1: while trying to figure out ways to not put more
- 15:39Speaker 1: games and more plays on these players but still get
- 15:43Speaker 1: the revenue and all that.
- 15:44Speaker 2: And you just couldn't.
- 15:46Speaker 1: You couldn't come up with a scenario where it made
- 15:47Speaker 1: sense to play Patrick Mahoons and these guys sixteen games
- 15:51Speaker 1: and then the other two games you're playing whoever the
- 15:53Speaker 1: backup is, and you know they're going to have to
- 15:54Speaker 1: play two games like it's it makes for a really
- 15:57Speaker 1: weird scenario, but you have to do something to protect
- 16:00Speaker 1: these players. That's a lot of games and a lot
- 16:02Speaker 1: of wear and tear on the bodies and teams that
- 16:04Speaker 1: go to the playoffs and play in the wild card game.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's now twenty two games that you could potentially be playing.
- 16:12Speaker 2: In a year.
- 16:13Speaker 1: You know, that's that's an incredible difference, and that's huge
- 16:16Speaker 1: h when you talk about the longevity of players in
- 16:18Speaker 1: the career length and and and what you expect to
- 16:20Speaker 1: get out of them. So not to go I've gotten
- 16:23Speaker 1: I'm talking over talking this conversation, but it's something that
- 16:27Speaker 1: they're going to keep pushing and and the players are
- 16:29Speaker 1: going to have to understand and think about what they're
- 16:32Speaker 1: willing to give and what they're willing to accept to
- 16:35Speaker 1: to give the owners eighteen games.
- 16:37Speaker 3: You don't have to go into detail, but if I
- 16:39Speaker 3: presented you with the option for these teams to have
- 16:42Speaker 3: two bye weeks, would your mentality shift of going on It.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Wouldn't change at all. That that doesn't that doesn't help.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I mean, especially what they're saying every team has has
- 16:53Speaker 1: one international game like those those you know, all the travel,
- 16:57Speaker 1: all the miles that you're putting on your body in
- 16:59Speaker 1: an airplane and trying to get prepared for a game,
- 17:02Speaker 1: all that that wears on these kids body, these players' bodies,

- 17:19Speaker 3: exhausting level of competition you got to expect to play
- 17:23Speaker 3: at all year long, playing upwards of twenty two games
- 17:25Speaker 3: just sounds ridiculous. Richard, it's always a pleasure sitting down
- 17:29Speaker 3: with you, my friend. I would let you sign us off.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Well, thank you guys for joining us. This is a

- 17:42Speaker 1: can get your NFL content here and I appreciate you.
