- 0:07Hello and welcome back to Inside Quotes,
- 0:09the show where my brother and I rewatch,
- 0:10review, and relive the staples of our childhood.
- 0:13This is episode one hundred and forty nine,
- 0:16and I am your host Jeremy, and with me today is my older brother Jonathan.
- 0:21Jonathan, welcome back to the show.
- 0:23Quack, quack, everybody. It's great to be back here on Inside Quotes.
- 0:27Jeremy, thanks for welcoming me back to the show.
- 0:30Jonathan, what is this? Do you feel that?
- 0:35What is it?
- 0:35What is it the
- 0:36winds in the east. There's a mist coming in.
- 0:40I don't have the mist, but I do have a portable fan.
- 0:44Is the wind changing?
- 0:45Yeah. Wait and now it's changed.
- 0:52Literally so easy. Okay, that was a stupid bit.
- 0:55But here we are.
- 0:56Mm-hmm.
- 0:57Chim Chimini, Jonathan. That's not a greeting.
- 1:00That's like that's like your British
- 1:00That i it could be. Quack quack.
- 1:02Chim Chiminy.
- 1:03alternate universe, Jonathan.
- 1:09If I'm gonna go with a a British alternate universe,
- 1:11I'd rather go with like a good a good Paddington accent.
- 1:14Ver I would
- 1:15You would. Yeah, I th I feel like you would do that.
- 1:17like to be a very polite bear.
- 1:19Yeah.
- 1:21Not a a cockney Dick Van Dyke.
- 1:23I just don't think I can do that accent.
- 1:23A hush stare
- 1:26I've done that accent before in
- 1:26Mm-hmm.
- 1:28a musical and it was not very fun because I couldn't shake it for a long time.
- 1:33Mm-hmm.
- 1:34I was Matilda's dad in Matilda the musical and that was very fun.
- 1:41It was.
- 1:42And I wonder, Jonathan.
- 1:45I don't know.
- 1:49gonna turn that into a segue, but I forgot that you had questions for me.
- 1:52Whoops.
- 1:57Well, Jeremy, that does remind me.
- 1:59You were recently in a musical.
- 2:02I was.
- 2:02You you followed
- 2:03up your role in Fiddler on the Roof and Matilda and you're back
- 2:06Yeah.
- 2:06for your third ~ leading I don't know,
- 2:10actors debut in a in a new musical.
- 2:12My third debut ever. It was kind of like a coming out of retirement type thing.
- 2:13What what is the the wording for something like that?
- 2:18Yeah,
- 2:20yeah, yeah.
- 2:20Because yeah, yeah, yeah. I started doing it like four years ago.
- 2:26Then I did it the next year and then I got married and then I had
- 2:32a job in Nashville. And it just life just got in the way.
- 2:35And ~ this year I was like,
- 2:39I should do it again.
- 2:42And turns out they were doing Mary Poppins the musical.
- 2:45And I auditioned for it.
- 2:47And I have the proof right here.
- 2:48I've got the musical program. Mary Poppins.
- 2:49Whoa I have a poster that I stole.
- 2:53Jeremy's is in color. We we'll use his as the prop.
- 2:55Yeah. I also
- 3:00have a lot of props that I took.
- 3:02So
- 3:03Yeah.
- 3:03basically, I did I bombed my audition.
- 3:08I just wanna say l I guess we're just gonna talk about this.
- 3:10I pretty much bombed my audition because I didn't know the words and
- 3:16my whole family was trying to convince me to to try out for Bert and I was like,
- 3:21Okay, I guess. I don't really feel like I want that role as much.
- 3:25~ I did not know the words.
- 3:29And then I got a reading for George Banks,
- 3:32which is the dad.
- 3:35Mm-hmm.
- 3:37and I did well enough in that to the where they asked
- 3:43me for a callback. However, I bombed the callback because one,
- 3:49I lost my voice completely. I guess I was sick.
- 3:51yeah.
- 3:52And then I also
- 3:55~ my Google Drive link did not work.
- 3:58I didn't give the right permissions until late in the night.
- 4:01So I did not get that role. ~ so I got the role of the chairman.
- 4:06But you might see me in this schnazzy suit here,
- 4:10and you did see the show, and you might be confused,
- 4:13Jonathan. ~ I thought you got the role of George.
- 4:15Well, I got the understudy of George,
- 4:18and it turns out
- 4:20I ended up needing to be George because the guy that was playing him had
- 4:25to back out due to ~ family obligations and stuff like that.
- 4:31So ~ but which I was k I was I was sad for,
- 4:36but I was slightly excited 'cause I really liked that character a lot.
- 4:39~ however, I was very stressed out because I
- 4:45had half the time everyone else did to memorize their lines.
- 4:51and so yeah. I played George Banks,
- 4:54which is why you've got some unconsistent inconsistent ~ uploads from
- 5:01us here at Inside Quotes.
- 5:03Had to take a little time off.
- 5:04Especially when you lost your voice too,
- 5:06you know, from all that rehearsing.
- 5:07Yeah. Yeah. But that is f I feel like this was our most
- 5:08But yeah, the program here, it says Jeremy Jones,
- 5:13George Banks.
- 5:14It was a great time. I've so basically I'm an expert on the story
- 5:18of this show 'cause I've been breathing it for three months now.
- 5:27All that time during Toy Story,
- 5:28I've
- 5:29Mm-hmm.
- 5:29been thinking Mary Pop.
- 5:31Yeah. So we knew we had to cover this movie eventually on the show,
- 5:35Yeah.
- 5:36once we got through all the Toy Story and spin offs and all that.
- 5:39wait, hold up.
- 5:41I have a bowler hat but it doesn't fit over my
- 5:44Your headphones.
- 5:45Yeah Shoot, I did not think that through.
- 5:49All right. Well
- 5:51Just hats off to you, you know.
- 5:52This is the genuine bowler hat from the show that I was allowed to take away.
- 5:57~ okay.
- 5:58So Jonathan, enough talk about the musical of Mary Poppins.
- 6:02I'm sure we'll keep talking about it later on,
- 6:04Mm-hmm.
- 6:04but
- 6:04~ you just got back from Disney Disney World.
- 6:10So
- 6:10Yeah, that is true. Mm-hmm.
- 6:14~ You got the screen canister
- 6:17Yeah,
- 6:17from Monsters Inc., a little water bottle for from while
- 6:19That is so cool.
- 6:20I'm ~ podcasting and I'm a bit parched.
- 6:24Bro, that is awesome.
- 6:26It's got a little button here that if I lock unlock it,
- 6:30it's gonna release some screams here.
- 6:32You ready?
- 6:33Yeah.
- 6:36Pretty cool, huh?
- 6:37That is really cool.
- 6:40I kept seeing it at the gift shop and I was like,
- 6:42I wanna get it, but I don't wanna pay that.
- 6:44It's insanely w how much was it,
- 6:45But it
- 6:47to be honest?
- 6:48was like thirty six dollars.
- 6:50I'd pay that much for that.
- 6:51But it was I felt like it was worth it.
- 6:53Being the Pixar fans that we are.
- 6:54I once
- 6:56Yeah. Monsters Inc., that's such a classic.
- 6:59You scream for drinks.
- 7:03Also, I've got something French for Jeremy here in this bag,
- 7:07but I will not reveal it on this podcast.
- 7:08Y something French
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:10Okay.
- 7:13So he'll he can reveal that later on his own time,
- 7:15but we'll see.
- 7:19No, I'm very curious now. Hmm.
- 7:22I've just got a lot of props this episode because I've also got some hot tea here.
- 7:25Okay.
- 7:27And this is a a Guardians of the Galaxy mug from the ride at Epcot.
- 7:29~ okay.
- 7:31I didn't get it this trip. Kelsey already had this,
- 7:33but I will
- 7:33Right, right, right.
- 7:34say I rode this over this past week and it was probably my favorite ride from
- 7:40the from the trip. I thought
- 7:41Really? Okay.
- 7:42it was pretty cool. The Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind.
- 7:45Okay. I I have not been on that yet.
- 7:51I unfortunately have not been to Disney in a good while.
- 7:54It had been let me tell you what.
- 7:56What? No.
- 7:59~ the last
- 7:59Yeah.
- 8:00time I was at like Magic Kingdom was like nineteen ninety eight.
- 8:04Like you were one years old and don't remember.
- 8:06But
- 8:06Yeah. Okay, well I've been there before since then.
- 8:11but ~ I we did all the parks with Kelsey's family,
- 8:14so ~ at just over like a few days we did the park hoppers thing,
- 8:19so that was it was a pretty cool trip.
- 8:21But I will say I got a lot of GoPro footage for some upcoming
- 8:25yeah?
- 8:26episodes of Inside Quotes. So just a little tease of some movies that
- 8:30are coming down the pipeline. ~ I did a lot of got a lot of B roll.
- 8:34So it's gonna be
- 8:35Okay.
- 8:36it's gonna be good.
- 8:37B roll, aka home movies.
- 8:39Yeah, mm-hmm.
- 8:40We love some home movies. One
- 8:42Mm-hmm.
- 8:42of my favorite ~ home movies is us at Disney.
- 8:45I don't remember it, so I lived vicariously with
- 8:49Yeah.
- 8:49my older brothers through the ~ home movies.
- 8:53That's just why I love
- 8:54Mm-hmm.
- 8:54them so much. But I have a memory of dad wearing the Safari hat,
- 8:59like for his mail hat, because he was a mailman.
- 8:59Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 9:01A mailman?
- 9:03Milman?
- 9:05And yeah. I just fit.
- 9:09Yeah, I rewatched some of those videos,
- 9:11you know, leading up to the trip just to kinda remember that those times.
- 9:16But we also have a lot of stuff from ~ Fort Wilderness 'cause we went there with
- 9:20scouts a lot. So that that was
- 9:21Dude, Fort Wilderness is underrated.
- 9:24that's probably most of our Disney experience was at Fort Wilderness growing up.
- 9:27Well, being both theme park fanatics and ex theme park workers,
- 9:34employees, at the one and only most underrated theme park of all time,
- 9:39Hon honorably discharged, I will say.
- 9:40honorably discharged. Okay.
- 9:41Yeah.
- 9:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:46From Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay.
- 9:48Mm-hmm.
- 9:52I don't know where I was going with that.
- 9:55I don't know.
- 9:55~
- 9:56used to get into Disney for free because I would swap out under
- 10:00the table my tickets. I would get people into Busch Gardens and they would get me
- 10:03Mm. Yeah.
- 10:04into Disney. And it's n some people say that's not a fair trade,
- 10:08but hey. Giving people a little bit of charity anyways,
- 10:13you know, 'cause Busch Gardens is so much better.
- 10:16Mm-hmm.
- 10:18Mm.
- 10:19So
- 10:19Yeah, pretty nostalgic for that place.
- 10:22Pretty great. But we're not talking about that.
- 10:25Talking Mary Poppins. Jeremy, do you have any
- 10:26We are talking about Mary Bobbins.
- 10:28fun facts and history behind the scenes for this movie?
- 10:31shoot.
- 10:32Jonathan, I have a lot of fun facts and history about this movie.
- 10:35This
- 10:35Okay.
- 10:35movie came out in nineteen sixty four,
- 10:37which was exactly sixty two years ago.
- 10:40Which Jonathan, this might is this our oldest movie we've covered so far?
- 10:44It is, yeah.
- 10:45It is a what was what's the next Defender?
- 10:47~ Fiddler, okay.
- 10:48Probably Fiddler on the roof, I think.
- 10:51And then like Muppet movie, right?
- 10:53Muppet
- 10:53movie, those were seventies, but I don't think we've covered anything from
- 10:56Nothing from the sixties, okay.
- 10:57the sixties. So unlocked a new decade.
- 10:58Well
- 11:02who thought the sixties would be such a staply category?
- 11:06I didn't. Well, that's cool.
- 11:09We got a new record, new milestone here in Inside Quotes.
- 11:12Maybe next week we'll ~ unlock the eighteen nineties and watch that train coming
- 11:18towards this camera or the horse moving.
- 11:23Yeah, stay tuned for our three hour deep dive analysis on that.
- 11:28Frame by frame ~
- 11:32anyway, so this movie was written or not written.
- 11:35~ this was directed by ~ Robert Stevenson
- 11:40~ it is rated G.
- 11:44For gall audiences.
- 11:49That was stupid. And the tagline is it's super califragilistic expialidocious.
- 11:54Which fun fact, that's in the Webster dictionary now because of this movie.
- 11:59Isn't that crazy?
- 12:00That is cool.
- 12:02And it says it refers to the movie,
- 12:05but ~ yeah. Anyways.
- 12:06You know what
- 12:07was a a formative book of my childhood?
- 12:10Willy Wonka, Charlie and Chaga Factory.
- 12:13~ I guess it was, but another one was
- 12:16Was it Genesis
- 12:17or Exodus? The Bible?
- 12:19y I mean
- 12:20yeah, that was very formative to my yeah,
- 12:22Yeah. Okay. The Boy Scout Handbook.
- 12:23I would say so. Old Old and New Testament,
- 12:26I would say.
- 12:29And the boys okay, you you you're really hitting them all out of the park right now.
- 12:32Ha ha ha.
- 12:34You're you're not yes anding me right now,
- 12:35but that's okay. the book is is
- 12:36~ I'm no butting you. Hey Jonathan,
- 12:40what book is it you're talking about?
- 12:42the Webster Dictionary, of course.
- 12:44No.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45that was a a formative book of our dad's adulthood.
- 12:49He would just pull out the dictionary sometime and look up a word.
- 12:51Yeah, he would. Work on
- 12:53his semantics.
- 12:56Okay. The book was Friendle. Did you ever read that book?
- 12:59It was I know.
- 12:59Jonathan, that's a d U core book.
- 13:02I never
- 13:02I
- 13:03got to read that one because I respected your your own bubble.
- 13:07It it was about the the kid in school who like made up a new word for
- 13:11a pen and called it a friendle and then he faced
- 13:14Ha ha
- 13:14all this opposition from his like teacher about how that's dumb and that's
- 13:19not a real word. And at the end of the story,
- 13:23like th they actually get the word in the dictionary and he he
- 13:27Really? That's so funny.
- 13:27has a conversation with his teacher 'cause he challenged
- 13:31the status quo.
- 13:33Wow, what a brave soul. I kinda wanna read that though.
- 13:37Yeah.
- 13:37Hold
- 13:37up. Had to find my pen. I the only thing I know about that,
- 13:43well now that I know the storyline,
- 13:44but I just remember like the cut book cover looking just like this.
- 13:53Yeah, he's like he's just holding a pen.
- 13:57This is a pen. This is a this is a pen.
- 14:01What's that what's that one from?
- 14:05~ it's it's definitely D three Mighty Ducks.
- 14:08That is not D3 Mighty Ducks.
- 14:10what is that?
- 14:11Was that a real guess? ~
- 14:12No, I don't know what that's from.
- 14:15It's from Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.
- 14:18Such
- 14:18man. Yeah, I don't
- 14:20a funny quote.
- 14:22Mm-hmm.
- 14:24Anyways, this is also a pen that I used on stage.
- 14:26Look how vintage it looks.
- 14:28That looks pretty cool.
- 14:29Friend of the show Jamie Norton actually ordered this on Amazon and I did not.
- 14:34I I just stuck it in my suit and I forgot about it,
- 14:36so whoops. If you want
- 14:38That's yours.
- 14:39this back and you're listening,
- 14:40let me know.
- 14:42Mm-hmm.
- 14:45That'll be a true test for our friends to see if they're listening,
- 14:47you know. You just like take something from their house and then you tell
- 14:49She could
- 14:50them you tell them on on the podcast,
- 14:52like you can have this back if you're listening.
- 14:55That's so funny.
- 14:57Ransom note, but just for views.
- 15:00It's like I told you about it.
- 15:01You didn't listen to the podcast?
- 15:02man.
- 15:05Yeah, why d I've been waiting for it.
- 15:07Yeah. So but she was in the show as well.
- 15:10~ and her daughter
- 15:11Mm-hmm. Yeah, did great. Mm-hmm.
- 15:14played well, Jamie played Winifred,
- 15:18who was my wife. Which is weird 'cause she's my cousin through marriage now,
- 15:22so anyways. and
- 15:26Ha ha ha.
- 15:27her daughter played Michael because no
- 15:31Guess there's no guys in in community theater these days.
- 15:34Or ever. So But she is like seven
- 15:37Yeah, it's a rare breed.
- 15:39I think she's eight years old and she knocked it out of the park.
- 15:41First big role.
- 15:41She did. Mm-hmm.
- 15:43She was so good. ~ so yeah.
- 15:48And I convinced my mother in law to be the bird lady,
- 15:53and she did it.
- 15:54She did. It was fun. I I will say that's some people
- 16:00it like takes them out of it if they go see like a show or play
- 16:04or something that they know the people in in it.
- 16:06Another friend of the show, Philip Russell.
- 16:07But like yeah,
- 16:09I love it. I I just think it's
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:11like it's it's makes it that much more exciting to like see these people
- 16:14you know in a different light.
- 16:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:15Yeah, if you're bored you can be like,
- 16:17I know them. This is what they've been up to for three months.
- 16:22Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 16:23~ some other like history,
- 16:26fun facts is this movie was like pretty breakthrough and like ~ like iconic
- 16:32for like its visual effects. The way that it blended live
- 16:34Yes, I
- 16:35action and the 2D animation and like the like the map paintings and stuff like that
- 16:41Mm-hmm.
- 16:42all
- 16:42together. You look at it now and it's like,
- 16:45okay, I can kind of see what they're doing.
- 16:47But at the time,
- 16:48Yeah.
- 16:48like I'm pretty sure it won some awards for like some of the visual effects.
- 16:53And I actually watched a really cool video about this in within the last year
- 16:57or so by
- 16:58Wait, wait, wait,
- 16:58wait. Save this for cinematography and animation.
- 17:00Okay, okay, all right. Save it.
- 17:01Save it. Yeah, it's juicy. It's good.
- 17:02Okay. You want
- 17:05me to just start all that over again?
- 17:07Like later?
- 17:09No, this gets people to keep listening.
- 17:11If not, skip to
- 17:11Okay. Okay.
- 17:14blank. And I'm not gonna tell you.
- 17:16Just listen for the rest of the episode.
- 17:18Sorry.
- 17:18Yeah, just listen.
- 17:21Listen to the rest of the episode so you can find out what we took from your houses.
- 17:27New bit.
- 17:30Then we'll give it back.
- 17:31Mm-hmm.
- 17:32Okay. Well, I mean that's all the history and stuff that I had then.
- 17:38dude, I've got way more fun facts,
- 17:38Okay. Then keep going.
- 17:40honestly. I
- 17:42yeah, so Disney Walt you know,
- 17:45you're familiar, Walt Disney, the guy
- 17:47Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 17:47that was in charge of Disney for a long time and started it.
- 17:50he liked Julie Andrews in Camelot on Broadway.
- 17:56And
- 17:57Okay. Mm-hmm.
- 17:58he in his mind was like,
- 18:01That's my Mary Poppins. That's it.
- 18:03Mm-hmm.
- 18:04so there wasn't much of a casting
- 18:07However, ~ he loved her performance so much in Camelot.
- 18:13He had the animators of one hundred and one Dalmatians draw the character
- 18:18of Anita to resemble Julie Andrews.
- 18:21Which is kinda cool.
- 18:24Yeah. Hmm.
- 18:26'cause it's also like the same
- 18:27I've been wanting to re watch that one too.
- 18:28it's also kinda like the same setting in the same city.
- 18:31~
- 18:32Yeah.
- 18:33of animation. So but
- 18:36and then Walt Disney regarded this movie to be one of the crowning achievements
- 18:40of his career. and Jonathan,
- 18:44while you were at Disney, did you happen to go to The Lost
- 18:49and Found in Frontierland?
- 18:53I did not. I don't think I lost anything
- 18:54Well
- 18:55there.
- 18:56did you find anything while you were there?
- 18:57I found stuff and haven't lost anything.
- 18:58Hmm. Stay tuned, listen to the rest of the episode.
- 19:00So click baby.
- 19:01I'll tell you what I found. It's just that audience for attention we've been
- 19:04Well anyways.
- 19:06seeking, you know?
- 19:07Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No click off rate.
- 19:09Mm-hmm.
- 19:12Please don't leave. Okay. ~ anyways
- 19:17in Walt Disney World, in the Lost and Found section in Frontierland,
- 19:22there is a wooden leg with the word Smith on it.
- 19:25Which is a reference to the joke,
- 19:28a man with a wooden leg named Smith.
- 19:29What was the other leg called?
- 19:30yeah, that's cool.
- 19:35So classic. I would like to go see that.
- 19:39Man, yeah. I should've looked I should've looked up for for Mary Poppins,
- 19:41You should go back next weekend so that
- 19:43yeah. Easter eggs in the park.
- 19:45you wouldn't think there would be much,
- 19:46but yeah. the step in time sequence,
- 19:50the dance the film got damaged and they had to reshoot that whole thing
- 19:57twice. ~ so that
- 20:01Hmm.
- 20:01took about a week to film. So that was an interesting thing.
- 20:06Just a single scratch can ruin everything.
- 20:11David Tomlinson, who played George Banks,
- 20:14pretty much like me, you know,
- 20:17the guy with the bowler hat. Yeah.
- 20:19he was nervous about not being a good enough singer for George Banks because
- 20:26he had never sang in a movie or anything before,
- 20:28so
- 20:29wow.
- 20:29which is why he sing speaks the whole time.
- 20:34I ~ whenever I was playing him,
- 20:37there is music, but you it's basically says you're allowed to sing speak halfway.
- 20:42Pretty much most of it. So I did a little bit of both.
- 20:45although Dick Van Dyke considers this the best movie
- 20:51he has appeared in, nevertheless maintains to this day that he
- 20:56was somewhat miscast as Bert. He has suggested that Jim Dale of all people
- 21:03would have played the part better than he.
- 21:05From Harry P.
- 21:07Harry P
- 21:08classic booba tuba pus Jim Dale would have been a better bert according
- 21:14to the Bert.
- 21:18I didn't realise he ever left the voiceover booth.
- 21:21he's like a classically trained actor,
- 21:23apparently.
- 21:23I don't think I've ever
- 21:24seen Wow.
- 21:26Look informed we are.
- 21:28Yeah.
- 21:29~ lyricist Robert B. Sherman had searched for nearly two weeks for
- 21:34a catchy phrase that could be Mary Poppin's anthem.
- 21:37He came across the perfect title when his young son Jeff came home from school
- 21:42one day and announced that he had just received his polio vaccine.
- 21:45Thinking that the vaccine had administered a shot,
- 21:49Sherman was like, Did it hurt?
- 21:52And he replied, No, they just gave it to me on a cube of sugar and
- 21:55I swallowed it down.
- 22:00i Sherman tried the idea on his brother the following morning,
- 22:04Richard Sherman, put the phrase into music and a spoonful of sugar was born.
- 22:09Yeah, that that was a fun I wa that is the kind of story that made me think,
- 22:14is that in the saving Mr. Banks movie?
- 22:18I'm not sure. I haven't seen that one in a very long time.
- 22:20It's been a while since
- 22:21I watched that one. ~ they do they do show the Sherman Brothers in that movie,
- 22:27like writing the songs and stuff.
- 22:28Yeah. I do remember that.
- 22:29Yeah. Like
- 22:30I remember ~ yeah, B J Novak and Jason Schwartzmann like played
- 22:36the Sherman Brothers in that.
- 22:36Yeah.
- 22:40Yeah, that's okay, so I do know that.
- 22:42I know that this was actually based on a book by PL Travers.
- 22:47PT Barnum. I mean yeah, PL Travers.
- 22:52and so there is the movie Saving Mr Banks,
- 22:54which is all about like Disney trying to get the author to like yeah,
- 22:59Woo her over basically.
- 23:00woo her
- 23:01into like signing the rights over to them to make the film and stuff
- 23:04and like promising he will treat it respectfully and that sort of thing.
- 23:08Turns out she was very mad at him at the after this came out.
- 23:12Which is crazy 'cause this is one of the most beloved ~
- 23:15Yeah.
- 23:15films of all time. So but she loved
- 23:18I know, it's been
- 23:19it's been so long since I watched it,
- 23:21but I do remember like it getting to the end and like she really didn't like it.
- 23:26Yeah.
- 23:28But I don't know.
- 23:30there was another thing about I was looking into like when the musical came
- 23:36up and like when they wrote that.
- 23:38~ and it was a lot sooner,
- 23:41like closer to this time than back then than I
- 23:45Mm-hmm.
- 23:46thought. It's not a classic. It was like written in the nineties and
- 23:49it wasn't a Broadway show until like four.
- 23:52okay. Mm-hmm.
- 23:53But
- 23:53the guy, Cameron McIntosh, that wrote it,
- 23:56he tried to also pretty much woo ~ P.
- 24:01T. Barnum, P. L. Travers,
- 24:04Mm-hmm.
- 24:04over, and she was very hesitant at first,
- 24:08but ~ after she died, Disney was like
- 24:14Here's some money. Anyways. So
- 24:17Okay, yeah.
- 24:20But I I what I I haven't read the books,
- 24:22but what I've heard
- 24:22Mm-hmm.
- 24:23might be wrong that the musical is a little bit closer to the Mary Poppins books
- 24:29source material than
- 24:30Well,
- 24:31yeah, I actually wasn't gonna bring it up but now that you did,
- 24:34I I started to read the book, like listen to it.
- 24:37It was like
- 24:37really?
- 24:37it was on ~ my Libby library card account and so I listened to like
- 24:42the first few chapters, but I like I didn't really have time to to finish it.
- 24:46But I I
- 24:47You've collected the sacred texts.
- 24:49I I did feel like it actually ~ it mirrored more of the musical that I saw
- 24:54you in at first
- 24:55Yeah.
- 24:56than it did the movies. I was kind of seeing a little bit of differences.
- 24:59I only got up as far as them like the chalk painting scene in the park with like
- 25:05Mary Poppins and Bert. That's really as far as I got,
- 25:05Mm-hmm. Okay.
- 25:07but
- 25:07~ yeah.
- 25:10So you're saying that basically
- 25:12And there's a bunch of books
- 25:13actually. It's not just one. Like it's a whole series.
- 25:15Yeah, it's like a series.
- 25:16Yeah.
- 25:19so basically what you're saying is that P.
- 25:20L. Travers would have liked me more than the guy who played George.
- 25:26Yeah. Mm-hmm. I'll say it. She sh she
- 25:29Not if I keep calling her PT Barnum.
- 25:33Okay, never mind. I was gonna say she would have liked you more than Walt Disney
- 25:35himself, but you know.
- 25:37Wow, that's high praise.
- 25:41No no no no no no autographs. Okay.
- 25:45Well, then we've got some more.
- 25:48Matthew Garber, who played Michael,
- 25:52the boy, he was paid ten cents for every time they filmed the
- 25:56tea party scene because he was afraid of heights.
- 26:00So somebody
- 26:00Call
- 26:01offered to pay him a bonus ten cents for every single take.
- 26:04~ yeah.
- 26:07Also, fun fact, sad fact,
- 26:11that kid died like a decade later.
- 26:14Read about that. Mm-hmm.
- 26:16So that's really sad. But he was like one of the funniest people.
- 26:21Like his facial expressions were the greatest.
- 26:23Robert Wise and Ernest Lehman visited
- 26:29the set to view Rush's of Dame Julie Andrews performance.
- 26:35~ she was cast immediately in the lead for the sound of music
- 26:42on the strength of that visit.
- 26:43So
- 26:45Very
- 26:46nice.
- 26:46This role got her sound of music.
- 26:48What which one do you think she's more famous for?
- 26:51Mary Poppins or Maria Von Trapp?
- 26:54I think based on the na the
- 26:55That's a tough one.
- 26:56well I don't I to be honest, I don't always remember her name in Sound of Music.
- 27:01I think of the movie Sound of Music first,
- 27:03but Mary Poppins comes to mind.
- 27:05So I think I think because of that,
- 27:05I agree. Her character, her performer yeah.
- 27:06yeah,
- 27:08Mary Poppins probably is the most famous.
- 27:11You think she's just here's the theory.
- 27:14Do you think it's the same person?
- 27:18That's just Maria von Trapp in the Witness Protection?
- 27:21Cause she ran away from the Nazis?
- 27:23wait, never mind, this is in nineteen ten.
- 27:29Maybe she doesn't age.
- 27:29King Edward.
- 27:32She's magical, I mean she probably just goes throughout time and takes care
- 27:33That's fair. She doesn't age. Well,
- 27:36of children, you know.
- 27:37she looks a lot different in the twenty nineteen twenty eighteen version
- 27:40of Mary Poppin's Returns. That's all I gotta say.
- 27:43Yeah.
- 27:45And so does Bert.
- 27:46Yeah.
- 27:48~ okay. Well
- 27:54Blah blah blah blah. I got three more facts and then we can get
- 27:57hit the ground running.
- 27:58Okay.
- 28:01She initially hesitated to take the part of Mary Poppins because she hoped that Jack
- 28:07Warner would ask her to star as Eliza Doolittle in
- 28:14My
- 28:14fair lady.
- 28:15My Fair Lady Interesting.
- 28:18Think about that. Like, what if,
- 28:22like, Audrey Hepburn swapped and was Mary Poppins and
- 28:29Julie Andrews was ~ my fair lady.
- 28:34So Audrey Hepburn would have been in the Princess Diaries movies?
- 28:37That's what you're saying?
- 28:38Whoa.
- 28:40And she would have gotten Sound of Music too.
- 28:44There's not a second Sound of Music.
- 28:45Actually don't think she lived that long.
- 28:47I don't know if she would have made it that to the two thousands.
- 28:47Did she die in the 70s? 80s?
- 28:49I I don't think it was that early,
- 28:5280s? 90s.
- 28:52but I do think
- 28:54let's fact check it.
- 28:56Ninety three. Yeah.
- 28:58Ninety three. Wow.
- 29:00So she's alive when you were alive.
- 29:01Wow. Did you guys know each other?
- 29:05My fair lady, classic.
- 29:08It doesn't say when she died on here.
- 29:10okay. They I don't think they knew just yet.
- 29:13So stupid.
- 29:15Okay. Here's something juicy about the show or about the not
- 29:22Okay.
- 29:22the show something about Julie Andrews.
- 29:24Karen Dottress, who
- 29:25~ okay. Mm-hmm.
- 29:28played Jane Banks, recalled that Dame Julie Andrews smoked cigarettes
- 29:33and swore frequently during filming.
- 29:38Not by Mary Poppins. That's crazy.
- 29:39Mm.
- 29:42We knew she liked rum punch, but we didn't know she was chain smoking cigs.
- 29:44Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 29:47Cussin' up a storm. Come on.
- 29:49Hmm.
- 29:52Okay, not only was Feed the Birds Walt Disney's favorite song in this movie,
- 29:56but it is said that any time he visited the Sherman brothers during the rest
- 30:00of his life, all he would have to do is say,
- 30:03Play it. And they knew he wanted to hear Feed the Birds in their office.
- 30:08That's so funny. And then this one is hearsay from my
- 30:14own personal not not my research,
- 30:16but just from my own head.
- 30:18trying to think of what I could remember.
- 30:19But I heard that Dick Van Dyke had no dance experience prior to this.
- 30:23But he was just so comical and charismatic that he didn't need need it.
- 30:29He just caught on eventually. So
- 30:30Yeah. Well there you go.
- 30:32Yeah. Jonathan, do you have a s
- 30:34Did it again and Mary
- 30:35Poppins returns.
- 30:38Yeah, he did. He did. Yeah.
- 30:43Jonathan, do you have a storyline for this movie?
- 30:47I do.
- 30:49for those who haven't seen this yet,
- 30:50in turn of the century London a magical nanny employs music and adventure
- 30:55to help two neglected children become closer to their father.
- 30:59Hilarity ensues.
- 31:02This is getting too close because you just did a Paddington voice,
- 31:06but you also did a Ben Wishall voice,
- 31:09who plays ~ Michael Banks in Mary Bobbin's Returns.
- 31:14Wow.
- 31:15That was excellent.
- 31:17Thank you.
- 31:18Well, now we can talk about the movie as if no one has ever seen it.
- 31:22As as if everyone's seen it. Ugh.
- 31:27Jonathan, did you watch this movie with your wife?
- 31:30What'd the wife say about this?
- 31:30Did. It did. ~
- 31:35let's see.
- 31:37two points. One, she did mention that she has seen the Mary Poppins musical
- 31:42on Broadway. Like she did see it.
- 31:44Did she really?
- 31:45And I'm she didn't say this next part,
- 31:48but I'm just gonna assume that she liked your version better.
- 31:50Yeah, I I'm pretty sure. Yeah.
- 31:51No no. She could say
- 31:53Shut up. Call her in right now.
- 31:56Tell her to humble me right now.
- 31:57Maybe another time.
- 31:58there's
- 31:58for sure not as good as the Broadway version.
- 32:01I
- 32:02don't know what you're talking about.
- 32:02No
- 32:04Although I have not seen the Broadway version.
- 32:06Mm.
- 32:07No, she liked she liked the Broadway version.
- 32:08Dude,
- 32:09the Broadway version they literally and during step in time they have Bert
- 32:12get on a harness and walk up the walls.
- 32:13That's that's the
- 32:15main thing she remembers is like he was like walking on the roof.
- 32:18Like Okay.
- 32:18Yeah. Upside down. And then
- 32:21Mary Poppins flies around the audience.
- 32:23There's no way. We didn't have a harness at all.
- 32:26You guys you guys
- 32:27did that in Franklin. Right?
- 32:33I offered to go to Home Depot and get a little pulley system,
- 32:36but they were like, That doesn't work.
- 32:41Yeah. Well, the only other thing I remember her talking about
- 32:47was she preferred the ending of the movie over the ending of the musical.
- 32:53At least in terms of like
- 32:54Really?
- 32:55it just was one point of like you actually see George Banks go out with
- 32:59the children and like fly kite together.
- 33:01It's kind of more
- 33:01That's fair.
- 33:02implied, I guess, in the musical,
- 33:05but she likes that he's
- 33:06Yeah.
- 33:07like
- 33:08returning to his childhood and and wants to spend time with them and
- 33:12to be playful and stuff. She liked that.
- 33:14I
- 33:14mean I literally had a kite in my hands at the end,
- 33:16so like what else could you ask for for real?
- 33:20You
- 33:20could have flown it. That's what that's what we're asking for.
- 33:22I could've I could've Well, fun fact,
- 33:25w I did use one of the kites with the sticks that they had in the actual flag kite
- 33:30song
- 33:31Mm-hmm.
- 33:31but it broke, so I had a whole new one that they made.
- 33:36Mm. Okay. Yeah.
- 33:36So and I just held it 'cause I had to hold it behind my back and it was awkward.
- 33:39Mm-hmm.
- 33:42But
- 33:44Hmm. Jeremy, did you watch this with your wife?
- 33:48I was going to and then we couldn't get our soundbar to work last night.
- 33:52And then We didn't watch it. But she has seen this so many times.
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:57This
- 33:58is a staple of Abby's childhood.
- 34:00~
- 34:00Okay.
- 34:01and I already know her thoughts on the movie.
- 34:04Her
- 34:05Mm-hmm.
- 34:05favorite character is Uncle Albert,
- 34:07the laughing guy that floats up to the ceiling.
- 34:10Yeah.
- 34:12and
- 34:14She also loves the sister suffragess song and when I told her that ~ neither sorry,
- 34:20British, neither of those items are
- 34:24in the musical version,
- 34:28she was kind of sad. I
- 34:30man.
- 34:30was like, Man, your two favorite parts are not in this.
- 34:33Wow.
- 34:33So ~
- 34:37but yeah. She's a big fan of Mary Poppins,
- 34:40so she came
- 34:40Mm.
- 34:41to all three shows.
- 34:43So and she said she didn't get bored once.
- 34:45Which props to her. That's a long show.
- 34:49Yeah. Nice of her to lie like that.
- 34:52Yeah.
- 34:53No, she was speaking the truth.
- 34:54She was like, It's kinda interesting to see how stuff goes wrong or
- 34:55She is a truth speaker. Yeah.
- 34:59how things go different and just you could watch other people in it,
- 35:02so
- 35:02No,
- 35:03that that's true.
- 35:06There's little bit of spice. Not every performance is the diff it's the same.
- 35:10Yeah.
- 35:11During one of our performances a lamppost knocked over and made a huge crash noise
- 35:17and it was really funny. During a very serious part.
- 35:19Yeah, I so I went we went to
- 35:22the opening Friday night performance.
- 35:24And
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:25that was a lot of fun.
- 35:27I liked I feel like I liked Friday night's performance the most.
- 35:31~ but Sunday's was apparently our best.
- 35:36So I don't know. We'll see.
- 35:39We'll have to get the tapes.
- 35:40Okay.
- 35:44Alright. Well, that's what the wives said.
- 35:46You wanna get right into this IQ test,
- 35:49Jonathan?
- 35:50We should. Yeah, we have had a little meeting behind the scenes,
- 35:56~ here at Inside Quotes and
- 35:57Meeting. Business meeting, if you will.
- 35:59we have made some changes to the IQ test.
- 36:02Just some slight some some slight modifications.
- 36:07Yes, that's just.
- 36:08and so there might be a few categories.
- 36:10We can just talk about when we get to them.
- 36:13We've kind of reordered some things,
- 36:15but essentially trying to make it a little bit more complete and objective.
- 36:20But also having some bonus categories as well.
- 36:22So I'll give that caveat.
- 36:22Yes. Just consider this
- 36:26consider this IQ test two point zero.
- 36:31I'm so glad I have a bowler hat now,
- 36:33now that we can cover ~ Meet the Robinsons.
- 36:37yeah. That's a good one.
- 36:39I can
- 36:39no longer reach this. So it's gone for the rest of the episode.
- 36:42Jeremy dropped his bowler hat and it's gone.
- 36:44Thank you for so much for ~ talking to our non video listeners because
- 36:50I forget that they're not watching all the time.
- 36:53Yeah.
- 36:54And it's funny
- 36:54'cause I don't watch I listen to podcasts more than I watch them,
- 36:58so but I'm not
- 36:58Mm-hmm. Me too.
- 37:00I'm just like, ~ if you're here,
- 37:02you're here.
- 37:03Mm-hmm.
- 37:05All right. Well
- 37:07Well, Jeremy, it's time to talk the quotes of Mary Poppins.
- 37:10Sorry, did you have a wind up for the the intro there?
- 37:14Okay.
- 37:14no r I was just gonna go over the ~
- 37:18the criteria so far. So basically
- 37:19Okay? Yeah.
- 37:22it's about the same. it's still each test is worth one point instead
- 37:27of some are worth two. Each test we have ten tests worth one point each.
- 37:32if it is seven points or higher,
- 37:36it is a staple. If it is a perfect score,
- 37:40ten out of ten, it is the stapliest.
- 37:43And then if it is under seven,
- 37:47so
- 37:47Yeah, under seven, it is a quack.
- 37:50Non passing, but we'll still watch it,
- 37:54you know. but never fear,
- 37:58because if this is not objectively a great movie,
- 38:01we have five bonus tests
- 38:04Ha ha ha.
- 38:05that it can make it up. So basically,
- 38:09there's a possibility for a quack to still be a stapleist.
- 38:14Given our
- 38:15Yeah.
- 38:16criteria. We're very
- 38:17We got the objective and the subjective.
- 38:19So, without further ado,
- 38:23let's dive into this. Test number one,
- 38:24All right.
- 38:25the quotable quotes test.
- 38:29Jonathan, is this a quotable movie?
- 38:31I mean this is our this is like our thing because we are inside quotes.
- 38:36All of
- 38:36Mm-hmm.
- 38:36our inside jokes are movie quotes.
- 38:38So quotes are important to us.
- 38:44Well, I will say this. I have only seen this movie one other time before when
- 38:49Really?
- 38:49I was a kid. So
- 38:52it was kinda like watching this fresh for the first time,
- 38:55almost.
- 38:55Okay.
- 38:56Like there was moments I remembered.
- 38:58So having said that, me and you don't quote this movie.
- 39:02It hasn't been one that we have quoted back and forth to each other.
- 39:05Okay.
- 39:06I did write down a few quotes,
- 39:09but I'll be honest, I don't have a lot for this one.
- 39:11My thoughts are
- 39:14The songs are more memorable than the quotes in this.
- 39:17I
- 39:17d yeah. I agree with that. And I feel like,
- 39:20~
- 39:24That brings a whole new thing.
- 39:25Like, is the music technically a quote?
- 39:28Mm-hmm.
- 39:29They're saying it. I don't know.
- 39:32However, I do feel like some of these are very much objective good quotes that
- 39:38people could use and people that people do use these.
- 39:38Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:41Mm-hmm.
- 39:43and now that I have been in the show,
- 39:46a lot of the quotes have been reused,
- 39:49and I made note of that.
- 39:50Yeah.
- 39:53So yeah, I mean I wrote a couple down.
- 39:55It wasn't like crazy list.
- 39:56I mean you can quote this whole movie,
- 39:58so I mean she get the point there.
- 39:58Yeah, I think I still I think I could
- 40:01I could it's been a week or two since our show and I probably could still
- 40:08do it. It's so weird.
- 40:11Like you memorize all your lines.
- 40:13I had ten scenes
- 40:14Mm.
- 40:15and then you just forget it. Like two years ago,
- 40:17And then it's just gone.
- 40:20I I could not remember a single line.
- 40:23Matilda or Fiddler.
- 40:24Mm-hmm.
- 40:25Yeah.
- 40:27It's so weird. It's like I'm cramming for a test and as soon as I graduate,
- 40:28Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 40:31I'm done.
- 40:34So, I don't know.
- 40:35That
- 40:35was a nice ~ Charlie from Cheaper by the Dozen ~ quote there.
- 40:39As soon as I graduate, I'm gone.
- 40:43As soon as I graduate.
- 40:49My whole life's there.
- 40:51He's still like emo but kinda justified.
- 40:54Yeah.
- 40:59I'm going back to Smallville, okay?
- 40:59Well
- 41:00I'm gonna go live with on a farm.
- 41:04When I graduate sorry, okay.
- 41:09Well, okay, I will start us out with a quote from George Banks himself,
- 41:14Jeremy. Winifred,
- 41:15yes.
- 41:16don't be emotional.
- 41:18Whatever, don't be emotional.
- 41:20Mm.
- 41:22Now
- 41:22That was not in my script. That was not in the musical,
- 41:26that line. However, there was an adjacent line whenever they are reading
- 41:32the the kids are singing their advertisement advertisement,
- 41:36if you will.
- 41:36Mm-hmm.
- 41:37~ and I say, Now Winifred,
- 41:40none of your theatrics Because
- 41:42Mm-hmm.
- 41:44in the show she's not a suffragette,
- 41:46she's an ex actress.
- 41:49that
- 41:49wants to be on the stage again.
- 41:50yeah.
- 41:50They
- 41:51changed her character a lot. I like that more.
- 41:53And we'll get into that during the characters.
- 41:55She's yeah, she's
- 41:55But
- 41:56like trying to be more of a socialite,
- 41:58like get into an an up more of an upper class.
- 42:01Even though they seem upper class in the show,
- 42:04Yes.
- 42:05but yeah.
- 42:06Yes. Well w we'll dive into that later.
- 42:08Okay, okay. Mm-hmm.
- 42:08But similar quote. Alright.
- 42:12my quote would be Close your mouth,
- 42:13Michael, you're not a callfish.
- 42:15That's a classic.
- 42:15Yeah, I wrote that one down too.
- 42:16Mm-hmm.
- 42:17~ I like the scene when they have the other cook go to the door.
- 42:24It's like it's like tell the position has been filled and he opens it up.
- 42:26She opens it up. It's just the dog.
- 42:28It's like, The position has been filled.
- 42:28The position has been failed.
- 42:33Yes, that's a good one. ~ so three we got ~ I told you she was tricky.
- 42:39Mm-hmm. I wrote that one down too.
- 42:40That's such a that's
- 42:41such a generic one, but it's a good one.
- 42:43And I think of that. So
- 42:47one that there's one that was very clever that I
- 42:53n had never heard of. ~ so it's not really an inside quote,
- 42:57but it could be. I just liked it a lot.
- 43:00It's
- 43:00Mm-hmm.
- 43:00that's a pie crust promised. Easily made,
- 43:02easily broken.
- 43:04We're like writing down the same ones here.
- 43:06Yeah.
- 43:06Well, that's we are the same person.
- 43:10So whatever.
- 43:14The other one I wrote
- 43:14probably
- 43:15down was when she like Mary Poppins measures herself and it's like as I expected,
- 43:19practically perfect in every way.
- 43:20Practically perfect in every way.
- 43:24Also interesting because I th could have sworn that Practically Perfect
- 43:28was an actual Mary Poppins song,
- 43:29but it is a Broadway song.
- 43:34Yeah, yeah. ~ yeah, I think Kelsey mentioned that when we were watching,
- 43:38like that that was only in the in the musical.
- 43:40When we get to the music, let's we can talk about some of the other songs that like
- 43:42Yeah. For sure. Yeah.
- 43:45yeah, that were added and whatnot.
- 43:47Lots to talk about here. Lots to boy.
- 43:49Lots to buy.
- 43:52~
- 43:53one that made me laugh was No wonder everything is higglety piggledy around here.
- 43:59Mm-hmm.
- 44:03I didn't realize that George was so funny.
- 44:05I w I'm glad I didn't watch it beforehand 'cause I
- 44:08Mm-hmm.
- 44:08didn't want that to like obscure my headspace,
- 44:12I guess, when I'm acting. But I kinda
- 44:14Yeah.
- 44:14wish I did at the same time because I would have played him more funnier.
- 44:17'Cause he's very funny in this.
- 44:18Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 44:20Like he's
- 44:21just sort of delusional. He was just repeating assuring himself like ~ Quite right,
- 44:26good idea. Quite right, good idea.
- 44:27Yeah. I
- 44:27Quite right, good idea.
- 44:30I made note of it like how totally unbothered he is that when he's on
- 44:36Yeah.
- 44:36the phone and there's like cannons being shot off and everything around him
- 44:39Yeah.
- 44:40is like swinging and falling off the shelves,
- 44:42Yeah.
- 44:43off the walls
- 44:43and stuff. And he's just like as calm as can be.
- 44:45Like Yeah.
- 44:46That's like his chaos that he is okay with.
- 44:48Yeah.
- 44:49~ I
- 44:50don't know, it's so so funny that his life is
- 44:54so chaotic outside of his own control.
- 44:58Anyways. and then another one is a vocab word for me.
- 45:03Tuppence. Tuppence a bag?
- 45:05Tuppence.
- 45:06okay. How much is tuppence, Jeremy?
- 45:09Two pence. You get it?
- 45:11Now I know. I I get it now, actually.
- 45:12You now you get it? Really? It clicked?
- 45:14~ Yeah.
- 45:15That's funny.
- 45:17I searched it earlier and it was just like two pennies,
- 45:20but now your explanation was like much quicker.
- 45:22Well
- 45:23Yeah. Top pens a bag.
- 45:26I've got tuppence right here. I told you this is a props show.
- 45:29I've got in this
- 45:29Is that really Pence?
- 45:30in this bag here, I've got all my ~ coins from ~ when I went to England in the UK.
- 45:37You
- 45:37went to the set.
- 45:39Yeah, to to the Mary Poppins set.
- 45:41And I found this. London Town.
- 45:41You went to London? They built that for this movie.
- 45:44Cut that.
- 45:48I could say that,
- 45:48Ha ha.
- 45:49but
- 45:51London Towerman.
- 45:54Cancel.
- 45:56Man.
- 45:58Yeah. Too many times watching that psych musical episode.
- 46:02But yeah.
- 46:03Great musical. Cutting it. I I'll cut it if you want.
- 46:06~ it's okay, you can leave it.
- 46:08Well now I
- 46:08have to cut that part out, so we'll see.
- 46:11Okay. Well yeah, I've got two pence tuppence here.
- 46:14Yeah.
- 46:14Tuppence
- 46:16with tuppence for paper and string.
- 46:21I wasn't even in that song.
- 46:23Mm-hmm.
- 46:24And I'm the one who s who sang that in the movie.
- 46:28Not me, George.
- 46:30Mm-hmm.
- 46:31But I wasn't even in that scene.
- 46:33I was very confused when George started to sing that.
- 46:36Yeah. Yeah, see, it had been so long since I had seen this.
- 46:40When you were talking ~ about like the bird lady role,
- 46:45like I didn't
- 46:46Yeah.
- 46:46even remember who that was.
- 46:48You're like Home Alone Two,
- 46:49the musical?
- 46:50~ yeah. Uhhuh.
- 46:52Th the turtle doves? R.
- 46:57I. P. the the turtle dove lady died recently.
- 46:59Yeah.
- 47:00Really?
- 47:01~ man.
- 47:03Or you're just gonna have to start an in memorium like segment on
- 47:06the show or something. I feel like it happens all the time.
- 47:08Every year f for
- 47:09for our ~ you know how they do that for the Oscars?
- 47:12We'll just do that for
- 47:12Yeah.
- 47:13our staple awards.
- 47:14Hmm.
- 47:16We can do that. Write that down.
- 47:18Write that down. Man,
- 47:22we're firing off with quotes today from other movies.
- 47:22Alright. What other quotes you got?
- 47:24I'm done from what I wrote down.
- 47:25Da I'm done too. I'm done also.
- 47:27Did we get to ten? I think so.
- 47:27I don't know, but
- 47:29Or close to it.
- 47:30I'm gonna go ahead and pass it because they're so good.
- 47:33They're high quality.
- 47:34I I did have one more.
- 47:35I ha but it was it was a line in a song,
- 47:37I think, that I liked.
- 47:38Okay.
- 47:39It the kids sang like, Never give us castor oil or gruel Like I just liked that.
- 47:43Yuk
- 47:48Never smell of barley water. Yeah.
- 47:51I put that part in too. Yeah.
- 47:53Alright, we'll we'll give that a point for the quotes then.
- 47:54Give it a point. Passes the quotes test.
- 47:56Okay, good quotes.
- 47:59Alright, test number two, Jonathan,
- 48:01is the magnificent music test.
- 48:03Now this one what?
- 48:04Okay. ~ we should say
- 48:07one of the changes we've made,
- 48:08so like we were doing two points for quotes in music,
- 48:11Mm-hmm.
- 48:12we're just doing the one now. So that's okay okay.
- 48:13I did say that. Yeah.
- 48:16So for the magnificent music, we've got songs,
- 48:20original songs by the Sherman brothers.
- 48:22~ and then we've got a composer,
- 48:26Erwin Costel, who arranged and conducted the score.
- 48:30But it's basically
- 48:31All right.
- 48:32just using the themes.
- 48:33of the songs I guess written. but yeah,
- 48:37I mean this one's gonna pass. It's got some great songs in it.
- 48:41I mean what it yeah,
- 48:42Some of the most Yeah.
- 48:43some of the most cool like memorable songs.
- 48:46~
- 48:47If
- 48:47Disney is playing it in their parks,
- 48:49Mm-hmm.
- 48:50it gets a pass.
- 48:51Yeah. we've got a spoonful of sugar,
- 48:55super califragilistic expialidoches.
- 48:57How many songs is that right there?
- 48:59No. Let's
- 49:00Yeah, that's just two
- 49:01Go Fly a Kite, Chim Chim Cherie,
- 49:04The Life
- 49:04Yeah.
- 49:05I Lead. I mean, I that's what I wrote down.
- 49:08So I mean, I feel like it passes based on that.
- 49:10Step in time, feed the birds, Fidelity
- 49:11Step in time, feed the birds.
- 49:14Fiduciary Bank. ~
- 49:16Mm-hmm.
- 49:17A Man Has Dreams. So basically,
- 49:20in my in the musical,
- 49:25all of mine are like A Man Has Dreams.
- 49:28Mm-hmm.
- 49:29Or it's Cherry Tree Lane is like the opening
- 49:31Mm-hmm.
- 49:31number where I sing. ~ so all like the Fidelity Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.
- 49:38That's that's not.
- 49:40the title of it. They've changed a lot of the the s different scene
- 49:44Mm-hmm.
- 49:45and added different music to it as well.
- 49:47Gotcha.
- 49:48Like they don't have the stay awake song,
- 49:53but they had like a creepy Sid's Toys scene,
- 49:56~ yeah. Yeah.
- 49:58like where the toys come to life in like a dream sequence.
- 50:01Every good musical has a creepy ballet number,
- 50:05Yeah. Yeah, we
- 50:05you know.
- 50:08were glad that wasn't in the movie.
- 50:09That was kind of creepy in the show.
- 50:10I Yeah, I actually really like that song a lot.
- 50:11Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:13That's the one song that was stuck in my head the whole time.
- 50:15It's called Playing the Game.
- 50:17Hm.
- 50:17I think it's better than Stay Awake,
- 50:19although I
- 50:20Yeah.
- 50:20feel like I do know that Julie Andrews that was her favorite song,
- 50:24surprisingly.
- 50:24Mm-hmm.
- 50:26So we can talk about some that are like original to the music musical.
- 50:31That anything can
- 50:31Mm-hmm.
- 50:32happen if you let it the ending song.
- 50:34That's just from the musical, right?
- 50:36Yeah.
- 50:37Just from the musical.
- 50:38We've got playing the game is just from the musical.
- 50:42The
- 50:46per practically perfect is only musical.
- 50:48Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 50:51Sister Suffragette is not in the musical.
- 50:53The Life I Lead. The same motifs and themes and like melody,
- 50:59Mm.
- 51:00but none of those lyrics. The only lyrics that George Banks sings that's exactly
- 51:05the same as mine was A Man Has Dreams,
- 51:08like where the
- 51:09Yeah.
- 51:12Where he gets the call and Bert's in the chimney with him,
- 51:15so so yeah. Stay awake is not in the show.
- 51:21Jolly Holiday is a classic. And that's one that I thought w wasn't in
- 51:27the movie but was only in the show.
- 51:33Yeah.
- 51:35Yeah, I was just gonna mention the Sherman brothers are just like iconic like Disney
- 51:40songwriters. ~
- 51:41Mm-hmm.
- 51:43I was trying to pull up some of the stuff that they did.
- 51:44What else have they done?
- 51:45I mean, they pretty much just wrote nonstop throughout like
- 51:49the sixties and seventies. So for like a lot of classic ~ Disney films.
- 51:53And longer than that, but ~ Okay,
- 51:58so they wrote
- 51:59songs for three movies that I get mixed up all the time,
- 52:03which is Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,
- 52:06and Bed Knobs and Broomsticks.
- 52:08I feel like they
- 52:10Okay.
- 52:11but they wrote songs for all three of those.
- 52:13And I feel like sometimes I get them mixed up.
- 52:15Like I don't remember which one was which.
- 52:15That's the reason the music is so similar.
- 52:17~
- 52:19they did songs for the Jungle Book,
- 52:20~ The Aristocats,
- 52:23Winnie the Pooh, ~
- 52:27Amongst their most famous works are theme park songs,
- 52:30There's a Great Big, Beautiful Tomorrow and It's a Small World After All.
- 52:33So if you've ever had that stuck in your head,
- 52:36they're to blame. Yeah.
- 52:42Thanks, BJ Novak.
- 52:43Yeah.
- 52:47yeah.
- 52:48I liked their style. Basically it's a classic trope in their style
- 52:53of music because they wrote all these songs,
- 52:55but I love it whenever there's an ensemble,
- 53:00like the background character takes over like some lines in the song.
- 53:05Mm-hmm.
- 53:05And then
- 53:05there's a classic like ladies section singing and then like right behind them
- 53:11there's like the deepest bass taking over a line,
- 53:13Yeah.
- 53:13like singing four octaves lower.
- 53:16And that's when
- 53:17like when the day is gray and ordinary,
- 53:19the pig. it's so fun.
- 53:20Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 53:22That's such a classic like six fifties and sixties musical trope.
- 53:29I love it.
- 53:29Yeah.
- 53:31Yeah. ~ music definitely gets a point here.
- 53:35Tell us about the next test then.
- 53:38So the next test I wanted to add is all about the story.
- 53:43Because we were doing the characters and kind of realized we were covering
- 53:48a lot of a lot of different aspects when we talked about the characters,
- 53:52whether it was like the story,
- 53:53the acting, the characters themselves.
- 53:55So we've kind of broken those up.
- 53:56So we'll talk about the story here.
- 54:00And the best I I don't know,
- 54:03I kind of wrote down some criteria,
- 54:05but here's why I will say
- 54:08why this one should pass. I think it's an interesting premise as
- 54:13far as ~ you know,
- 54:16a mysterious magical nanny comes to like help this family.
- 54:19~ I feel like there's character development with the children and with the family.
- 54:24~
- 54:25Yes.
- 54:26it's got like life lessons and themes.
- 54:28I feel like there's humor for like the adults and kids.
- 54:32The world building is imaginative and it's got a lot of heart to the movie.
- 54:36Yeah.
- 54:37So
- 54:38I feel like there's other aspects of it that I I would say ~
- 54:46I don't know, I guess that's not like super specific there.
- 54:49But I I feel like the story ultimately is just it's good here.
- 54:52Like it it's like a a classic story and the writing
- 54:58is is good and makes sense.
- 55:00Basically you could ask a stranger on the street that's never seen Mary Poppins
- 55:08and they can tell you, like, what's that about?
- 55:11Isn't about like some magical nanny with an umbrella?
- 55:11Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 55:14Yeah.
- 55:17Or somebody that has seen it will tell you every detail about it.
- 55:20Like it's I i I feel like it's memorable and it's very well executed.
- 55:27And it's Walt Disney's favorite,
- 55:29so
- 55:29Yeah. And I think in this one you've I mean,
- 55:33we have a separate category for music,
- 55:34Mm.
- 55:35but like they wrote in, they adapted the story and they included the songs too.
- 55:40And so I feel like there's a lot of clever writing as far as the songs go too,
- 55:43so I I just feel like it's a good script,
- 55:47maybe that's what I would yeah,
- 55:50stick with there. Do you agree with that?
- 55:51Alright. I agree. The
- 55:52Okay.
- 55:54only thing I would say is that it is a little long and the scenes
- 55:59Well
- 56:00aren't as tied together as I want them to be.
- 56:02But Okay,
- 56:02Yeah. Save it for rewatchability.
- 56:06okay.
- 56:10That was one aspect I was like,
- 56:12~ I won't talk about that one here.
- 56:14Okay. So do you want to talk characters or acting next?
- 56:21Let's go acting. So are
- 56:22Okay. Okay.
- 56:24we our passing story, correct?
- 56:25Alright.
- 56:25Story, yes. Mm-hmm.
- 56:27You talk acting first.
- 56:29Okay, so just some of the criteria here.
- 56:33Is it is the acting believable or are you getting taken out of the movie?
- 56:36Do the actors have chemistry? Is there any like great physicality to the acting?
- 56:42Is it memorable? Is the acting,
- 56:45you know do they get lost in the character,
- 56:48that sort of thing? So I would say like with Julie Andrews,
- 56:53I mean it's an iconic role and I feel like
- 56:56Yeah.
- 56:56she brings that character to life.
- 56:59I feel like the acting's really good there.
- 57:00Can you tell the difference between
- 57:05her and Sound of Music Sound of Music?
- 57:12~
- 57:16'Cause they're s very similar rules.
- 57:16I would say I would say it's very s
- 57:17They're both kind of a caretaker.
- 57:19very similar. ~ yeah,
- 57:22I I think it's kind of an a a a Han Solo,
- 57:25Indiana Jones kind of situation.
- 57:27Okay. Wow. Great. Great take.
- 57:30Yeah. Mm-hmm. But I feel like both work
- 57:31That makes s that clicks. Alright.
- 57:33Yeah.
- 57:35and aren't the same character.
- 57:36But they kind of are.
- 57:38On a scale
- 57:39on a scale of Robin Williams to the rock,
- 57:42Okay.
- 57:43she's lean she she skews more towards Robin Williams.
- 57:47Like she's incredible and you know Robin Williams when you see,
- 57:51Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 57:53but does sh but does she like blend into that character as her own?
- 57:58Versus The
- 57:59Yeah, I
- 57:59Rock, it's just like he's playing the rock.
- 58:02Yeah. Yeah, I would say it leans more towards Robin Williams.
- 58:05Like she wasn't going like all method and stuff,
- 58:07but like I
- 58:08Yeah.
- 58:08think that she do does get lost in the role.
- 58:10Yeah.
- 58:11Okay. Yeah.
- 58:14I agree with that.
- 58:14What do you think about Dick Van Dyke?
- 58:16Dick Van Dyke was very good. Although
- 58:18Mm-hmm.
- 58:19he gets imposter syndrome, I feel like when you talk about acting,
- 58:24people are mostly impressed with him.
- 58:27~
- 58:27Mm-hmm.
- 58:30I think he's great. I thought there was like some controversy about like
- 58:33the accent and stuff like that.
- 58:34Like it was a really bad accent,
- 58:35The accent is not very good. It ~ there's a point where he sounded like Adam
- 58:36you know? Yeah. Yeah.
- 58:39Sandler. I forgot
- 58:42at what part. ~ man.
- 58:43Yeah. I but also it's I I think he's right to say it's like one of his best roles.
- 58:50I I mean I what else have I seen him in?
- 58:52But like I feel like it's the Dick Van Dyke
- 58:53The Dick Van Dyke Show.
- 58:55show, Diagnosis Murder. That's an obscure reference.
- 58:59No one knows. ~
- 59:00Think about this. He's been in so little films.
- 59:04That's how good he was at this role.
- 59:05Yeah. Mhm. Yeah.
- 59:07Is that he's so famous because of this.
- 59:09Yeah.
- 59:11And I think the chemistry between the two is great.
- 59:13Yeah, I agree with that.
- 59:16~ and I think the physicality of just like the all the musical numbers
- 59:20and stuff and his dancing and dancing with penguins and stuff like that thing.
- 59:24I would say
- 59:24like twenty seven minimum percent of the of the movie
- 59:30was with his knees above his chin.
- 59:33Yeah.
- 59:37And that's impressive.
- 59:38That is that is pretty good.
- 59:41~ what about the children?
- 59:43The children we have to go easier on 'cause they're children.
- 59:46Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 59:46However,
- 59:47there's some good children's actors and there's some bad children's actors,
- 59:51and I believe
- 59:52I believe that the kid who played Michael was really good.
- 59:55And I believe that Jane was okay.
- 59:59~
- 1:00:00Okay. Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:04I just feel like it
- 1:00:07I don't know.
- 1:00:10There wasn't very much ~ depth in her character or her like reaction times
- 1:00:15Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:16and stuff like that. But
- 1:00:18then again she's a kid. But I feel like the kid who played Michael,
- 1:00:23knocked it out of the park with his like facial
- 1:00:26Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:26expressions. Like pretty much matching Dick Van Dyke's facial expressions.
- 1:00:31Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:00:31Only he was
- 1:00:32more like Huh the whole time.
- 1:00:37~ he's the funniest, I think. And that's just his physicality.
- 1:00:42So I think they did well. ~ George Banks what I liked
- 1:00:49is that they you I could believe that George
- 1:00:54and Michael were father and son,
- 1:00:57based off of mannerisms and just overall looks.
- 1:01:01~
- 1:01:05So I don't know who that who's matching who there,
- 1:01:08but maybe it's just a coincidence.
- 1:01:10But ~ I also thought George was great.
- 1:01:13Like he had to manage unbothersomeness versus
- 1:01:20stressed out.
- 1:01:21Yeah.
- 1:01:23And he just like he was in his own little world the whole time.
- 1:01:26It was yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:28I feel like he
- 1:01:29is like he is the one that got lost in his character the most.
- 1:01:33No. He's the one that needs to be saved.
- 1:01:35Is that what
- 1:01:36Yeah.
- 1:01:37Basically.
- 1:01:40Yeah. So I don't know, I mean,
- 1:01:42was there was there any acting that like took you out of it from like
- 1:01:46any of the other characters? Or did you feel like overall like this is a pass?
- 1:01:50Like this is good. Good stuff.
- 1:01:52I would say maybe
- 1:01:53like
- 1:01:56The maid and the cook. Kinda took me out a little bit.
- 1:02:00But 'cause they were just so cartoonish.
- 1:02:00Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:03I don't know. Winifred was kind of
- 1:02:08I was surprised after watching the musical,
- 1:02:10Kinda good.
- 1:02:10I felt like she had less to do in the movie than she does in the musical,
- 1:02:13Right. They really played up Winifred's part in the musical.
- 1:02:14actually. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:17~ for the better, I believe. Okay.
- 1:02:20So I think I liked her better in the musical,
- 1:02:22but yeah.
- 1:02:25So yeah. Nothing really took me out.
- 1:02:27What about you?
- 1:02:28As far
- 1:02:28I mean, as far as the core cast,
- 1:02:29I was gonna give it a point. I thought I thought it was good.
- 1:02:32I mean, I feel like within just based on Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke,
- 1:02:38that pair, like, that's
- 1:02:40Yeah.
- 1:02:40all you need to like keep you engaged,
- 1:02:42I think. And the kids just have to kinda hit their marks and they do they
- 1:02:46do good at that.
- 1:02:46Yeah.
- 1:02:47Yeah. Well done. Well
- 1:02:49All right.
- 1:02:50done. Point
- 1:02:52All right.
- 1:02:54The characters test. So we've got five categories.
- 1:02:58We've got the lead slash hero.
- 1:02:59We've got the villain and antagonist.
- 1:03:01Then we've got the supporting characters,
- 1:03:03the mining the minor characters,
- 1:03:05and
- 1:03:06Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:06then we've got the scene stealer.
- 1:03:08~ I had a really hard time figuring out who the villain was.
- 1:03:13Cause there's really not much of a villain besides
- 1:03:13I did too. I I don't
- 1:03:15like because it's not George Banks.
- 1:03:18Yeah.
- 1:03:19It's just his mindset.
- 1:03:21Yeah. ~ and that's where I guess I don't know I don't even know if I'd call
- 1:03:28him the antagonist. Like it honestly,
- 1:03:31like, Mary Poppins is kind of the one that like is antagonizing them
- 1:03:35to like change I don't know if
- 1:03:36True.
- 1:03:37that's the right like I guess I mean she's definitely the protagonist.
- 1:03:40She's the the lead. But from her like a certain point
- 1:03:40That's how George thinks, that's for sure.
- 1:03:44of view, that's how they think.
- 1:03:45Like she's come into this house and she's messed things up.
- 1:03:47Yeah.
- 1:03:48And then like
- 1:03:49There's like the chairman of the bank,
- 1:03:51but even him, he's not like this overarching villain for the whole movie
- 1:03:54or anything like that. And honestly,
- 1:03:57like those kids did lose him a lot of money at the bank,
- 1:03:59so like I'd fire him too. That was a change from the musical.
- 1:04:00That's fair true. Yeah, it's very reasonable.
- 1:04:04Yeah.
- 1:04:06Yeah, I it was very more very much easier to understand in the musical.
- 1:04:11Like I had
- 1:04:12Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:12a choice for to give somebody a loan.
- 1:04:14One was just like a money scheme and one was
- 1:04:15Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:04:17a person that was trying to open up a factory for jobs in the area.
- 1:04:21Yeah. Keep yeah.
- 1:04:22And I went with the people,
- 1:04:25but it could have lost a lot of money.
- 1:04:27And I was
- 1:04:27Yeah.
- 1:04:28freaking out the whole show because I thought I was gonna get fired and yeah.
- 1:04:32Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:33I was very much bothered instead of unbothered.
- 1:04:36You made like you stood by your convictions,
- 1:04:38you made a moral choice that could have lost you your job,
- 1:04:42but it pays off in the end and then like it works out.
- 1:04:45In this one, the guy dies laughing and then like,
- 1:04:48Well, we need a new partner. E even though we fired you.
- 1:04:50Yeah, it's just very it's confusing,
- 1:04:52That like Yeah.
- 1:04:53convoluted, but also
- 1:04:56convenient
- 1:04:57Yeah.
- 1:04:57at the end. yeah. So
- 1:04:59I felt
- 1:04:59like the ending was a little kinda confusing,
- 1:05:02so I didn't include that with like the story
- 1:05:03Yeah.
- 1:05:04element. But yeah. So I don't know.
- 1:05:07I I guess you would have to say George Banks,
- 1:05:12but he's like redeemed in the end.
- 1:05:14I guess that's where I would lean.
- 1:05:16Kinda like the main ha character though,
- 1:05:18at the same time. Like a lot of the story revolves around him too.
- 1:05:21It's just like all the family,
- 1:05:22That's true. It is Yeah.
- 1:05:23except for it
- 1:05:26the whole story revolves around the entire family in the musical,
- 1:05:29but in the movie, Winifred has nothing to do with the movie.
- 1:05:33George could be a single father and it would nothing would change besides
- 1:05:38the first song.
- 1:05:40Well, everyone that's listening to this,
- 1:05:42let us know, like comment. Let us know who's the villain of this movie is.
- 1:05:45I think we're a little stumped on this one.
- 1:05:45Yeah. We don't really have to have a villain,
- 1:05:47Yeah. I think
- 1:05:48I guess. ~
- 1:05:50yeah, I think we've still got other categories for characters and
- 1:05:53Of
- 1:05:53course for the lead we've got Mary Poppins.
- 1:05:55Incredible character. She's a magical nanny.
- 1:05:59But is she are we supposed to think that?
- 1:06:01Are we supposed to just be like believing what the kids are seeing and saying?
- 1:06:06Or are we supposed to be like the adult that doesn't see the magic?
- 1:06:10But it's just like a good nanny that with good imagination.
- 1:06:13'Cause she's very much an an antagonistic person when she gaslights
- 1:06:17the kids into saying, like, we didn't do any of that.
- 1:06:18Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:06:20What are you talking about? Go to sleep,
- 1:06:22idiot.
- 1:06:23Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:25So
- 1:06:27Yeah. She sh
- 1:06:29Mary Poppins might be the villain.
- 1:06:31You're right.
- 1:06:35It's it's more than that, it's complicated than that.
- 1:06:38Mm.
- 1:06:38So
- 1:06:39I yeah, I think she's great. She's she's like there's like two ideas at play
- 1:06:45of like she's at she's bringing order to to their lives and rules
- 1:06:49and things like that, but also like a sense of like absurdism
- 1:06:54of just like nonsensical
- 1:06:55Mm.
- 1:06:57like I'm gonna arrive and I'm gonna slide up the banister,
- 1:07:00you know, like
- 1:07:01Yeah.
- 1:07:01everything you know is upside down and I'm gonna show you
- 1:07:03Yes.
- 1:07:04like how to break the laws of physics.
- 1:07:06But not really, you know, like
- 1:07:08Yeah.
- 1:07:09I I that's just like an element of this movie that I really like.
- 1:07:12It's just kind of embracing just some of that.
- 1:07:16Yeah, the sill just the silliness.
- 1:07:17Kookiness. The overall kookiness.
- 1:07:18Yeah. Yeah. Mhm. Yeah.
- 1:07:19I love it. Big fan of that.
- 1:07:24Alright, well, the supporting characters.
- 1:07:26We've got Bert. Classic. The
- 1:07:27Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:07:29the goat. ~ he basically also takes care of the kids when they're
- 1:07:36outside.
- 1:07:37Yeah.
- 1:07:38He's basically the city tour guide for them.
- 1:07:40Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:42Like the man. He's a manny.
- 1:07:43He's ki
- 1:07:44he's kind of a narrator, not really,
- 1:07:46but like Yeah. Okay.
- 1:07:47He's omnipresent and he's he's the narrator,
- 1:07:49Yeah. Mhm. Yeah.
- 1:07:50especially in the musical, but
- 1:07:52he also talks to us the camera
- 1:07:55Yeah.
- 1:07:56during this, and he's like, Come this way.
- 1:07:57We've got Cherry Tree Lane.
- 1:07:59Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:02and I just love how like he has a finger on the pulse of the community,
- 1:08:05but he's also like also omnipresent in magical.
- 1:08:09There's a there's some type of like wizardry.
- 1:08:16He's the same he's not a human like Mary Poppins is not a human,
- 1:08:21you know. I don't know what he is.
- 1:08:26At the same time, like it's like he is,
- 1:08:28but he's not magical because like he's it's not like he's like going
- 1:08:32off into the clouds either.
- 1:08:34Right. Yeah.
- 1:08:36~
- 1:08:36I actually I I like it. It's kind of a funny scene when ~ he he draws like
- 1:08:42the the sidewalk art and he like he's like,
- 1:08:44Okay, I'll take you know, and we'll jump in.
- 1:08:46Like try and jump into the the picture and and basically
- 1:08:49Who's gonna do weekend two?
- 1:08:52Yeah. but like Mary Poppins is just like,
- 1:08:56you just like complicate the the most simplest thing.
- 1:08:58Like he can't do magic, you know,
- 1:09:00like ev ev even though he's got the imagination.
- 1:09:04Yeah, so I don't know. It's interesting.
- 1:09:06I feel like he is the type he's a regular human but he hasn't lost
- 1:09:11his ability to believe in Santa or something like that,
- 1:09:17you know, like in a ~
- 1:09:17Yeah. He still embraces his inner child.
- 1:09:20Yeah. So he's still kind of a child,
- 1:09:22so that the magic still works on him.
- 1:09:26Definitely a good character.
- 1:09:26Okay.
- 1:09:28Minor characters, we have Winifred,
- 1:09:31less of a role versus in the musical.
- 1:09:33Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:34for someone who says that men are stupid,
- 1:09:36she seems to be she literally says that in in the song.
- 1:09:41~
- 1:09:42that's why yeah. ~ she seems to be somewhat of a empty headed one in it.
- 1:09:50Like for someone I feel like if this was made today they would emphasize
- 1:09:56her being a suffragette as like a serious thing,
- 1:09:59but like they sort of play it off as like,
- 1:10:02she's just dumb. She's
- 1:10:04Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:05gonna go be a suffragette and like figure out if women can vote.
- 1:10:10Have fun over there.
- 1:10:11Mm. Yeah.
- 1:10:13And they kinda make her seem dumb in Ditzy.
- 1:10:17Mm.
- 1:10:18And in the show she's very much not but she's not a suffragette.
- 1:10:23So
- 1:10:24Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:24she just like somehow is more of a feminist icon in the musical than
- 1:10:31the suffragette character in the movie.
- 1:10:34So, I don't know.
- 1:10:35Yeah,
- 1:10:36yeah.
- 1:10:38So didn't didn't really like her that much in this one.
- 1:10:40~ then we've got the bird lady.
- 1:10:45Mm. Yeah.
- 1:10:47not as much of a role in this either,
- 1:10:50just six basically in the dream sequence and then the one scene.
- 1:10:54But ~ sh she was in the show but not in the movie.
- 1:10:57She was in your show, but not in this movie.
- 1:10:59Yeah.
- 1:11:01Yeah.
- 1:11:03She even sang, but I feel like she barely talks at all in this movie.
- 1:11:04Mm-hmm.
- 1:11:07So Yeah. The Feed the Birds was mostly the bird lady's song.
- 1:11:15And then we've got Uncle Albert,
- 1:11:17full of jokes and helium. I just
- 1:11:19Apparently.
- 1:11:20love that that's just like the the thing that happens.
- 1:11:23If you laugh too hard, you just float to the top.
- 1:11:25Happens to anybody. ~ Then
- 1:11:26Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:31we've got Admiral Boom, famous for being punctual.
- 1:11:34We get punctuality from Greenwich.
- 1:11:37And legend has it, they got it from Admiral Boom.
- 1:11:40Love that.
- 1:11:41Hmm.
- 1:11:44He was in this a lot more. He was more of a scene chan trans scene changer,
- 1:11:48Yeah.
- 1:11:49transitioner.
- 1:11:52but in the show he's just basically at the beginning of each act and it's
- 1:11:57not really as much of a impactful,
- 1:12:00r memorable thing.
- 1:12:04Who would you say? It's the scene stealer.
- 1:12:07I don't know. there's also the chairman who's a minor character.
- 1:12:11Also played by Dick Van Dyke. Didn't know if you knew that.
- 1:12:13Mhm. I I didn't remember that,
- 1:12:16but after watching the scene I was like,
- 1:12:19yeah. That's definitely Dick Van Dyke.
- 1:12:20What's interesting is
- 1:12:22that he looks older than Dick Van Dyke is now,
- 1:12:25and Dick Van Dyke is a hundred.
- 1:12:27Yeah.
- 1:12:30So makeup team did really good for him.
- 1:12:32Okay, the scene stealer. is it the comic relief or anyone who just steals
- 1:12:38the scene in general? I wanna say I might be biased,
- 1:12:42but in this movie, I wanna say it's George.
- 1:12:46Okay.
- 1:12:47Just because he just takes
- 1:12:49Mm.
- 1:12:50the story by the reins as he's walking through each scene.
- 1:12:54I don't know. But what would you say?
- 1:12:56Would you say Bert?
- 1:12:59Guess I feel like
- 1:13:03I like Bert is I could interchange either of these,
- 1:13:06like either George or Bert for the supporting character or for the s
- 1:13:11sho ~ scene stealer. Yeah.
- 1:13:13Or is it Mary Poppins? Cause every time she's
- 1:13:15Maybe.
- 1:13:16on camera you're like, what's gonna happen?
- 1:13:18What's she gonna pull out of that bag?
- 1:13:18That's true. I mean yeah. Yeah.
- 1:13:22I think it could be Mary Poppins too.
- 1:13:24Could be.
- 1:13:25Main character Anne steals the scene.
- 1:13:27And the villain.
- 1:13:30She just takes the whole the whole show.
- 1:13:32She's practically perfect in every way.
- 1:13:34Yeah. Yeah, I say the characters get a point.
- 1:13:38Okay. Good enough, good enough.
- 1:13:40Wow, we're taking a long time on this episode,
- 1:13:42aren't we?
- 1:13:43Yeah.
- 1:13:44Okay, well we've got the sensational set design test.
- 1:13:49~
- 1:13:52There are some really cool locations and just design in general.
- 1:13:57I a lot of the establishing scenes of nineteen ten London was
- 1:14:01Yeah.
- 1:14:01made with like glass acrylic paintings and stuff.
- 1:14:05which is impressive.
- 1:14:09But in general,
- 1:14:12like the sets, like the the Cherry Tree Lane,
- 1:14:15seventeen Cherry Tree Lane, the house.
- 1:14:17Every time Admiral Boom's cannon went off,
- 1:14:19everything in the house went and then it
- 1:14:19Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:22suddenly, even without Mary Poppins,
- 1:14:24it just like they just hit the wall and everything goes back to normal.
- 1:14:27Yeah. I I think
- 1:14:27I loved that.
- 1:14:28I think just the house in that block of houses is like iconic.
- 1:14:32~ mhm.
- 1:14:32Yeah. Just having a park in front of your house is cool too.
- 1:14:37Yeah, seventeen Cherry Tree Lane,
- 1:14:39the Admiral Boom's house. ~ the scene like where they're on the rooftops is like
- 1:14:44Yeah.
- 1:14:45the one like there's a few mental images I have of watching this movie as a kid,
- 1:14:49and it was like the
- 1:14:50Okay.
- 1:14:50silhouettes of all the chimney sweeps,
- 1:14:52like on the rooftops and stuff.
- 1:14:54Okay.
- 1:14:55I feel like that was
- 1:14:57I don't know. An iconic location.
- 1:15:00Yeah, yeah. Solid. I feel like what I remember the most is
- 1:15:06the park scenes and like the animation.
- 1:15:09But yeah. I would say
- 1:15:12Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:12it's a good set. Good location.
- 1:15:17You could recognize it from
- 1:15:21Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:21just a screenshot of what movie it's from.
- 1:15:23Like they built a steamboat on top of a building.
- 1:15:29Like
- 1:15:30Yeah.
- 1:15:31the roof is literally a s a boat.
- 1:15:34I think that just utterly confused me as a kid.
- 1:15:37Like I did not know what was going on with any of that.
- 1:15:39It's like I don't understand this.
- 1:15:42Is he on top of the house?
- 1:15:43He just retired from the navy.
- 1:15:45Is he j are they just next to a a body of water and he's on his ship?
- 1:15:49I I don't know why. I just was confused by all that.
- 1:15:49Nope. His apartment, his home was a
- 1:15:53regular home, but a little ship playset t on top.
- 1:15:58But it looked good. It was cool.
- 1:16:01So unique too. How do you think of that?
- 1:16:05Rest in peace. Okay, well I'll give that a point.
- 1:16:07So point for set design? Yeah.
- 1:16:08Give that a point, yeah. We've
- 1:16:11got cinematography and animation.
- 1:16:13Jonathan,
- 1:16:13Okay.
- 1:16:14this gets a point. I'm sorry. I know what you were gonna say.
- 1:16:16It gets a point. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:18It's getting a point. Go ahead and give me your defense.
- 1:16:19Yeah. No, I mean ~ iconic
- 1:16:26a blending of live action, animation,
- 1:16:29and just like the acrylic you know,
- 1:16:32like the the map paintings of just the composite
- 1:16:33Yes, yeah.
- 1:16:34shots, groundbreaking for the time.
- 1:16:37Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:38I watched a really cool video about this in the past year from
- 1:16:42the Corridor crew channel.
- 1:16:44Yeah.
- 1:16:45They're like the
- 1:16:46the like CGI React kind of videos.
- 1:16:49VFX people.
- 1:16:49They yeah, they
- 1:16:50like rs they react to good and bad,
- 1:16:52like visual effects and things like that.
- 1:16:53Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:54But they did a video about basically how this movie was made.
- 1:16:59It's like a very old school ~ Disney process called like sodium vapor
- 1:17:05process of basically how they used to make these shots without green screen
- 1:17:10technology back in the day. Like
- 1:17:12So crisp and clean.
- 1:17:13yeah, how did they they're like
- 1:17:15looking at the shots in there,
- 1:17:16like how do they do that? Because like with a standard green screen or blue screen,
- 1:17:20it's really hard to get like all the all the light reflections out of the shot.
- 1:17:26Like anything that's like translucent material or like water in the scene.
- 1:17:31~ if you're like moving around and like you've got long hair,
- 1:17:35you're gonna see like bits of green
- 1:17:36Mm-hmm.
- 1:17:37in the hair. The motion blur is bad.
- 1:17:40Like you can just tell it's like in front of a green screen.
- 1:17:43And in this it's so crisp.
- 1:17:45They're like, How did
- 1:17:45Yeah.
- 1:17:46they do this? Well, it's this like sodium vapor process,
- 1:17:50which is like
- 1:17:51It's
- 1:17:51an analog version of green screen.
- 1:17:53That's the most impressive part.
- 1:17:53Yeah. They had these
- 1:17:56sodium vapor lights, which were actually more like a yellowish hue,
- 1:18:01I guess, for the backgrounds that they would create.
- 1:18:03And Disney developed it was developed by Ub Iworks,
- 1:18:08~ is the guy's name, and he they developed these like prisms that would basically
- 1:18:15like have two cameras shoot like two strips of film pointed at this prism.
- 1:18:20One stretch strip of film
- 1:18:22would filter out everything but this specific like ~ I don't know what
- 1:18:28the term is but for
- 1:18:28Like a negative.
- 1:18:29like yeah, except everything that isn't this light,
- 1:18:32specific like ~ hue of light, like scientifically they can isolate this specific
- 1:18:38light with this ~ this like sodium vapor bulb,
- 1:18:43I guess. Yeah. Mhm.
- 1:18:43With most lighting, like an LED,
- 1:18:45there's like three types of lights and and ~ frequencies,
- 1:18:46The red, green and blue. Yeah.
- 1:18:49but this one only had the one frequency.
- 1:18:50Mm.
- 1:18:53So they learned how to use this prism and only like three were made.
- 1:18:56And they used it to like shoot a negative and then so basically everything except
- 1:19:02for the light and then a shot with like nothing but that light.
- 1:19:06And so then they were able to use
- 1:19:07So what you're saying is that they
- 1:19:09added the negative to the positive and the positive to the negative.
- 1:19:12Yeah, that's exactly what they did.
- 1:19:14So they shot these, you know, bas on these with this background and then like
- 1:19:20all did it all in camera and then you just combine the shots and it was great.
- 1:19:25Like that with the animation strip that they were already used to doing,
- 1:19:29this like multi multi pane shots where they could do the two D animation.
- 1:19:35Like it was an innovative process that they like stopped doing.
- 1:19:40And so this Corridor crew
- 1:19:41Yeah.
- 1:19:42video, like, they're like, we're gonna try and recreate this.
- 1:19:45And so they did like a shot of like one of the the employees like,
- 1:19:50I'm gonna I I have this dream to make this film of like a clown getting married
- 1:19:54on Mars with like multicolored hair and wearing like a wedding veil,
- 1:19:57Drinking water. All
- 1:19:58drinking water
- 1:20:00like the worst things you can do for a green screen.
- 1:20:02Everything that's like
- 1:20:03yeah, makes it impossible. You gotta do all these tools to try and like feather
- 1:20:06out the lines and clean it up.
- 1:20:08Yeah. Have you done some green
- 1:20:08And it was just like instant.
- 1:20:11screen editing, Jonathan?
- 1:20:13Just barely. Like nothing really.
- 1:20:15It's so hard. Like I've yeah, I've never gotten it right.
- 1:20:15Enough to know it's miserable.
- 1:20:16Yeah. Yeah. It's so hard.
- 1:20:19Like you have to get the lighting just
- 1:20:21right. And there's still like a lot of cleanup involved.
- 1:20:24So all that to say, I don't know if we can like link that video in our show notes
- 1:20:29or something, but like I would check that out on YouTube.
- 1:20:32Yeah, we'll give a little bit of a push in viewership.
- 1:20:32Mm-hmm. Yeah. That I mean, they're only at like seven million views right
- 1:20:36Yeah. It's so fascinating.
- 1:20:37now as of today when I rewatched it,
- 1:20:39so yeah.
- 1:20:41Yeah.
- 1:20:42I
- 1:20:42was just like, why aren't more movies being shot this way?
- 1:20:45I mean, I guess it is easier to do it like on the volume now,
- 1:20:49but like it was just like a really cool way and like they kinda just stopped using
- 1:20:55it. So, I don't know. Pretty cool though.
- 1:20:59I
- 1:20:59guess when you have to do VFX just to make the background anyways,
- 1:21:02people are just like, Let's just do the green screen and get it over with
- 1:21:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:21:07But it's incredible.
- 1:21:09Yeah, iconic. Gets a point.
- 1:21:12Yeah, gets a point for sure. I would give it two points if that worked,
- 1:21:15Mm-hmm.
- 1:21:15but
- 1:21:15that's not how IQ two point works.
- 1:21:18~ now we've got the sound design.
- 1:21:22Jonathan, we've got a whole another brand new category.
- 1:21:24Tell us a little bit about
- 1:21:25Yeah.
- 1:21:25that.
- 1:21:26Yeah. ~ this was suggested by Jonathan Pauley,
- 1:21:30who we had on the Toy Story episodes with us.
- 1:21:32I he just noticed we talked a lot about the sound design in general
- 1:21:36on those episodes. We're like,
- 1:21:37yeah, we we definitely should have added this as a category.
- 1:21:40Having said that, I am not giving this movie a pass.
- 1:21:43This has this has that Yeah.
- 1:21:45Our debut test. It's funny.
- 1:21:47No, I mean
- 1:21:49the sound design, it has that old movie sound to it,
- 1:21:53Like the crisp
- 1:21:53where like
- 1:21:54Ugh.
- 1:21:55All
- 1:21:55like all the characters are like yelling and it has that like tinny sound
- 1:21:59to it that it's it's kinda hard to listen to,
- 1:22:01Yeah. I guess. It's a little nostalgic though.
- 1:22:02~ to be honest.
- 1:22:06What'd you say?
- 1:22:08~
- 1:22:11Sound sound wise, no. I don't know.
- 1:22:14I mean
- 1:22:15Okay, we'll give that a zero. It can't be perfect.
- 1:22:17maybe that's the sound mix versus sound design of like but I couldn't really think
- 1:22:22of like that's an iconic sound effect that they added for the foley
- 1:22:25Yeah.
- 1:22:26and things like that. Maybe you thought so.
- 1:22:28What did you have?
- 1:22:30I didn't nothing of nothing of note really.
- 1:22:32Mm-hmm.
- 1:22:33~
- 1:22:34it doesn't bother me as much just because it's I it was the acting
- 1:22:40and the like the voices were nice.
- 1:22:42Like it wasn't like the transatlantic accent or just like
- 1:22:46Accent, yeah.
- 1:22:48the like in the nineteen forties every dude talked the same with
- 1:22:53the same cadence and monotone and it was like
- 1:22:54Mm. Yeah.
- 1:22:56miserable. But
- 1:22:58Yeah, the sound design itself.
- 1:23:02Wasn't anything special. I'll I'll
- 1:23:04Yeah.
- 1:23:04give you that.
- 1:23:05Mhm. Good visual effects. I mean the songs were great,
- 1:23:08but I felt like a lot of the like it just didn't have a lot of clarity
- 1:23:12as far as like the dialogue and and whatnot.
- 1:23:15I wasn't a fan of the sound mix in this,
- 1:23:18but
- 1:23:19Ugh, yeah. I'll go zero on
- 1:23:23Okay.
- 1:23:23that. there's one more thing I wanted to talk about for cinematography
- 1:23:27and animation because we didn't talk about the animation part.
- 1:23:28yeah. Okay. yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:31There's an animated scene in this,
- 1:23:33and I was just so impressed how well they intertwined it.
- 1:23:37It could have just
- 1:23:37Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:38been like they're walking and walking and walking.
- 1:23:40But especially the horse, the merry-go round scene.
- 1:23:44Yeah.
- 1:23:45Every time it touched the ground it would scrape on the cartoon version
- 1:23:48Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:49and it looked
- 1:23:50seamless. And like w they were hunting the fox and it went up and around the pole.
- 1:23:55Like it was very cool. It looked very hard to do.
- 1:23:59So just wanted to say that was very good too.
- 1:24:04that was good. Yeah, I mean all that to say with the you know,
- 1:24:08the background compositing that we were talking about,
- 1:24:10it was all to make way for the two D animation,
- 1:24:13which was which was great too.
- 1:24:16Yeah. So. Alright, Jonathan test number nine is the cool credits test.
- 1:24:22This factors in the opening credits and the end credits.
- 1:24:26Does it have a cool animation at the beginning?
- 1:24:29Is there anything creative if there's like bloopers or something at the end?
- 1:24:34So it's not just boring black text.
- 1:24:36You know. ~ did you notice anything?
- 1:24:40I didn't either.
- 1:24:41I didn't. No. I
- 1:24:43mean this is these old movies like this,
- 1:24:45the it's like very basic like credits at the start and at the end.
- 1:24:50Yeah. It's a little bit like artsy.
- 1:24:50Which is which is kinda nice,
- 1:24:53They're like
- 1:24:54yeah.
- 1:24:55like here's a screen and this is who directed it.
- 1:24:58This is starring blank blank blank but like it's
- 1:24:58Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:25:01and it's like a long overture.
- 1:25:03Like movies don't have overtures anymore.
- 1:25:05True,
- 1:25:05yeah. Yeah. ~ but I it didn't really stand out to me.
- 1:25:11Yeah.
- 1:25:12Me neither.
- 1:25:14Unfortunately
- 1:25:16Zero for the cool credits.
- 1:25:18Yeah. Not very cool of credits of them.
- 1:25:20Mm.
- 1:25:23Alright. And then we've got test number 10,
- 1:25:26the rewatchable review factor.
- 1:25:28Whew, Jonathan, is this a rewatchable movie?
- 1:25:32Is this like national treasure?
- 1:25:34Are you gonna want to watch it as soon as it ends?
- 1:25:38~ I'm gonna say no. This movie is too long.
- 1:25:40I'm I'm gonna say no too. Sorry.
- 1:25:42It's too long and it's yeah.
- 1:25:43That it's
- 1:25:46that's the downside of this movie.
- 1:25:47This movie is two hours and nineteen minutes long.
- 1:25:49I would absolutely love it if this got down to a ninety
- 1:25:56to a hundred minute runtime. Which is isn't maybe fair,
- 1:26:00I don't know, but I
- 1:26:01Even the show is long too.
- 1:26:03the show was long, I will say.
- 1:26:07it was like a seven o'clock show that we saw a few guys and we didn't
- 1:26:11get out till like ten o'clock,
- 1:26:13I feel like. And then we stayed around and talked.
- 1:26:16I felt like we didn't leave till like ten thirty,
- 1:26:18so ~ so I I don't know.
- 1:26:22I there's a lot of elements that I really like about this movie and the song.
- 1:26:26Songs are iconic. But I do feel like there's like a lot of repr like a reprise
- 1:26:32of a lot of the songs. But
- 1:26:34Yeah.
- 1:26:34like the Spoonful of Sugar Scene.
- 1:26:37Like it I remember that as like when they're taking the medicine.
- 1:26:40But
- 1:26:41Yeah.
- 1:26:41it starts sooner than that in the movie.
- 1:26:43There's like a it's like when they're cleaning the room.
- 1:26:45Yes. And that didn't make sense to me because I was
- 1:26:46So Yeah.
- 1:26:49used to the musical and she sings practically perfect.
- 1:26:52Mm-hmm. True. Yeah.
- 1:26:52And that makes more sense
- 1:26:55for that scene, obviously, 'cause I wrote it for that scene.
- 1:26:58You know, so I I don't know. I feel like some of the songs repeated
- 1:27:01and they could have cut out a lot.
- 1:27:03Yeah.
- 1:27:04And a lot of it is slow too. Like even
- 1:27:07the reading of the the advertisement and like some
- 1:27:11Mm-hmm.
- 1:27:11of the singing was way too slow just 'cause they were getting their points across.
- 1:27:16But nah, they it could have been could have been a lot faster.
- 1:27:19We could shave
- 1:27:20I I
- 1:27:20off a little bit. Just hold two X on TikTok.
- 1:27:22Yeah.
- 1:27:23Yeah, I mean it's it's just too long.
- 1:27:26The pacing isn't there for this movie,
- 1:27:27I I feel like, and that's that's gonna I definitely think people should watch this
- 1:27:32movie. But is it one you're gonna rewatch over and over again?
- 1:27:35I I don't think so.
- 1:27:37Am I gonna show this to my kid over showing them coconut or minions?
- 1:27:40Yes, I will.
- 1:27:41Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:43It's very low stem, but
- 1:27:44Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:27:46also speed it up a little bit.
- 1:27:48Yeah.
- 1:27:49There's a lot of positive I think we've talked very positively about it,
- 1:27:52but
- 1:27:52Yeah.
- 1:27:52the runtime what has been the biggest factor for me on this one?
- 1:27:56I'm not gonna wanna restart it as soon as I start it.
- 1:27:58As soon as I finish the movie.
- 1:27:58Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:28:02Especially that I've been thinking about this story for three months.
- 1:28:06Yeah.
- 1:28:06For a
- 1:28:07minimum of three hours a day.
- 1:28:09We
- 1:28:09were definitely like, should we cover like Mary Poppins returns and saving Mr.
- 1:28:13Banks? And we're like, Let's just do Mary Poppins and then it'd be done there.
- 1:28:17Yeah. Well I'll get I'll get nostalgic later.
- 1:28:17You're you've been thinking about this for a long time.
- 1:28:19Yeah.
- 1:28:21Yeah. It
- 1:28:24Tech Week was every single day.
- 1:28:26~ minimum of three hours.
- 1:28:29But it took longer 'cause there's stops.
- 1:28:33Okay. So zero points there.
- 1:28:34Yeah.
- 1:28:35Zero points. I th it was going strong until the last three.
- 1:28:38So we've got seven points objectively.
- 1:28:41So it's already a staple.
- 1:28:45six, seven, correct. So it's already in a staple tier,
- 1:28:49which I'm happy.
- 1:28:49Okay.
- 1:28:50I'm glad it's not a quack because of it objectively.
- 1:28:52Okay. Mm-hmm.
- 1:28:54but we now have our lightning fast bonus round where we add a little
- 1:29:00bit of bonus points to it. Just h hit it over the edge.
- 1:29:01Mm-hmm. Okay, okay.
- 1:29:03Because I do believe
- 1:29:04I personally kind of believe that this is a stapleist picture.
- 1:29:07It's a classic. If Walt Disney thinks it's the best
- 1:29:09Mm-hmm.
- 1:29:10movie he's done, it's gotta hit that.
- 1:29:12So it's our duty
- 1:29:14Mm.
- 1:29:14To add these bonus points to it.
- 1:29:16But he he never lived to see country bears.
- 1:29:18I I'll just leave that caveat.
- 1:29:18That's so fair.
- 1:29:20I wish he would have s seen that.
- 1:29:22Yeah.
- 1:29:23Dang, Jonathan. Hit him where it hurts.
- 1:29:24Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, sorry.
- 1:29:26I'm gonna think about that at night.
- 1:29:27Man,
- 1:29:29he never got to see the best Disney movie of all time.
- 1:29:33Okay, well our first bonus category is the DVD menu.
- 1:29:38~ does this have a good DVD menu?
- 1:29:40There were no DVDs in nineteen sixty four.
- 1:29:42However, in two thousand nine there was the forty fifth anniversary,
- 1:29:47some would say the peak D V D Blu ray era.
- 1:29:50and it I could show it to us right now,
- 1:29:54honestly. Or I could just put it on screen.
- 1:29:56What would you like? Would you like to see that?
- 1:29:59I watched ~ a video on YouTube of it.
- 1:30:01If you've got it ready to pull up,
- 1:30:02Okay. It's I think I do.
- 1:30:04we can pull it up.
- 1:30:08Here is Can you see everything correctly?
- 1:30:11Yeah, I can see it.
- 1:30:14Look at all this motion graphics right there.
- 1:30:16And it looks antique also.
- 1:30:19this is different than the one I saw.
- 1:30:20Yeah.
- 1:30:21really?
- 1:30:24Well, here we've got the the kite floating around that George made or mended.
- 1:30:29And then this is the actual scene from the beginning where she's on the cloud.
- 1:30:32And I like that
- 1:30:32Yeah.
- 1:30:33because it's a a clip, but it's also like a personality thing.
- 1:30:36And then
- 1:30:37Yeah.
- 1:30:37it's just everything has a good transition animation too.
- 1:30:41You'll see once it goes to the scene selection in a little bit.
- 1:30:46but I'm already passing it based off of this.
- 1:30:51'Cause you didn't need to add motion
- 1:30:52Yeah, skip ahead a little bit.
- 1:30:53graphics. It's it's almost there.
- 1:30:56~ okay. Yeah, there was another version I saw on YouTube
- 1:30:56Yeah. So right here.
- 1:31:01that was ~ it started out that was pretty cool.
- 1:31:05Isn't that good? ~ that's so good.
- 1:31:06Yeah.
- 1:31:08Yeah, the other one I saw it was like it was kind of like the two D animation
- 1:31:12in the park. It started out with like the penguins
- 1:31:15really?
- 1:31:16and like the penguin kind of like waddles up and kind of makes a face
- 1:31:19at the camera and then it like opens up a storybook and on one side is like
- 1:31:24an image like a video of like
- 1:31:26Mary Poppins and Bert dancing,
- 1:31:28and then on the other side was like the menu.
- 1:31:30And it was it was kinda simple,
- 1:31:31well, I
- 1:31:32but it was like it it kind of incorporated the two D animation to it.
- 1:31:36So I mean they've got two. That's okay,
- 1:31:37I think that was the fortieth anniversary version.
- 1:31:40that's the one I saw.
- 1:31:43I thought this one I I only saw the screen.
- 1:31:46I thought it was just a simple I didn't know they had the animation,
- 1:31:48so I didn't look into that one.
- 1:31:49That's just a little intro, yeah.
- 1:31:49So But anyways.
- 1:31:50Well, I would say yes then.
- 1:31:53Alright, so we're at eight points.
- 1:31:54We've got two pretty good ones there.
- 1:31:57Alright, getting close. Would this work as a theme park attraction?
- 1:32:01This is our second bonus point.
- 1:32:03Okay. ~ I didn't really think about this.
- 1:32:06Or just like a an area in Disney.
- 1:32:07Well
- 1:32:09Like
- 1:32:10Cherry Tree Lane at Disney, would that be cool?
- 1:32:12And they like every hour they could have Admiral
- 1:32:12I actu Yeah.
- 1:32:14Boom going boom and like
- 1:32:16They almost
- 1:32:17they almost did that actually.
- 1:32:18I looked it up.
- 1:32:19Really?
- 1:32:20They 'cause I was curious if they had any anything Disney related there.
- 1:32:24And they were going to not do a ride,
- 1:32:27but they were gonna like expand
- 1:32:27Anything Disney related at Disney?
- 1:32:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, sorry. Anything Mary Poppins related at Disney.
- 1:32:33Gotcha. Okay. You're well.
- 1:32:33Thanks for that correction. ~
- 1:32:36Yeah, they were gonna like expand one of the areas to be like Mary Poppins themed
- 1:32:42a little bit. Nothing crazy, but they were gonna do an expansion
- 1:32:46And it was like right before COVID and then it just never happened
- 1:32:50and then they cancelled it. They just decided not to do it.
- 1:32:52'Cause it was gonna be a lot of money and they were losing money,
- 1:32:55Yeah. That's fair. That's fair.
- 1:32:55so
- 1:32:57so they might do it at some point,
- 1:32:58but ~ I didn't think of any rides though specifically.
- 1:33:03It doesn't I guess it doesn't have to be an attraction,
- 1:33:05but like an
- 1:33:05Mm-hmm.
- 1:33:06area. Like I would walk through Cherry Tree Lane in the park easily.
- 1:33:11No problem.
- 1:33:14I feel like we've always done it as like a ride though.
- 1:33:17Yeah.
- 1:33:19Well, here's my ride idea. Get this.
- 1:33:22Yeah.
- 1:33:23Holding onto an umbrella and going up into the sky.
- 1:33:26I don't think it necessarily works for that,
- 1:33:28but maybe like a chimney sweep journey,
- 1:33:30like roof running or kite flyers.
- 1:33:31Mm-hmm. huh.
- 1:33:33Even if it's like a quick merrygo round thing.
- 1:33:34I yeah.
- 1:33:36Now, if anyone could pull off the the loose merry-go-round,
- 1:33:42like without the tracks, it would be Disney World.
- 1:33:45But
- 1:33:48I don't know, maybe I'll say no on that.
- 1:33:52Yeah. I they could definitely do one so I mean like I went to Disney
- 1:33:55and they have all these dark rides that kind of just like take you through
- 1:33:58the story of the movie, like Peter Pan
- 1:33:59Yeah.
- 1:34:00and ~ Little Mermaid, stuff like that.
- 1:34:03So they could definitely do something that went through all
- 1:34:06the different sequences and have like the animation stuff and the other
- 1:34:10the scenes at the house, but I don't know.
- 1:34:12Something iconic that you're like,
- 1:34:14I wanna ride that. I've I don't know.
- 1:34:18I might say zero. Mm-hmm.
- 1:34:18However, it would be a good area to walk through.
- 1:34:21Mm-hmm.
- 1:34:22So maybe like an old like animation,
- 1:34:26like London animation area. That'd be cool.
- 1:34:29Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:34:31Yeah.
- 1:34:34So alright, well we'll no no let's say no.
- 1:34:35We'll see how it scores. I don't know.
- 1:34:36Maybe we can come back and revisit it.
- 1:34:37Okay. Okay.
- 1:34:39I think we'll say no on that. That's fine.
- 1:34:41All right. What else we got?
- 1:34:41We'll we'll we'll
- 1:34:43change it if Disney actually does that.
- 1:34:46Okay.
- 1:34:47Alright, so we have the iconic props.
- 1:34:49Is there a standout prop that you can identify that's that's from that movie?
- 1:34:53Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:34:55Ya yes, absolutely. It's either the chimney brush or Mary Poppins umbrella with
- 1:35:00the parrot. It's awesome.
- 1:35:00Yeah. Yeah, with the parrot handle.
- 1:35:02Yeah. No,
- 1:35:03Cool.
- 1:35:04that's iconic.
- 1:35:04They actually
- 1:35:05they actually bought that specific prop for the show from like the Disney store
- 1:35:09or something. So yeah. So I hope hopefully sh
- 1:35:10really? Huh.
- 1:35:13the the girl who played Mary Poppins got to keep that.
- 1:35:16That'd be cool.
- 1:35:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:35:20however, there's a cool story about my honorable mention choice
- 1:35:24is the cathedral snow globe.
- 1:35:24Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:35:27I loved that. It was so cool because it had birds instead of the snow flying around
- 1:35:32the cathedral. And
- 1:35:34So basically, when the founder and chief archivist at Walt Disney Archives,
- 1:35:40Dave Smith, went on a search for the snow globe from this movie,
- 1:35:43which featured the birds flying around St.
- 1:35:45Paul's Cathedral, he finally found it on a shelf in a janitor's office.
- 1:35:49The janitor explained that he saw the snow globe sitting in a trash can,
- 1:35:54but found it too pretty to throw away and he kept it himself.
- 1:35:58So like the movie people didn't care about it that much,
- 1:36:02but it was so cool
- 1:36:03That a janitor to put it on his own shelf in his office.
- 1:36:07That is a pretty good honorable mention there.
- 1:36:08Pretty good pop. Pretty good prop.
- 1:36:09Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:36:10I'm not gonna
- 1:36:11recognize it from this movie. I might now,
- 1:36:14but not as much as the umbrella.
- 1:36:16Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:36:16But I'm gonna give it a point just based off of the umbrella.
- 1:36:20Umbrella's never made people fly before until this time,
- 1:36:23so
- 1:36:25I had one other prop I was gonna bring out.
- 1:36:27It's not Mary
- 1:36:27yeah?
- 1:36:28Poppins related, but it's my nameplate from when I worked in a bank like Georgia
- 1:36:32Banks.
- 1:36:33Okay.
- 1:36:34So there it is. I pulled this out.
- 1:36:36It was in the same little shoebox I had with all my like my tuppence,
- 1:36:39you know, with my British money.
- 1:36:40Okay. That's fun. How is the world of finance?
- 1:36:41So I just thought I would bring it out for this Mary Poppins episode.
- 1:36:46Finance, yes. Well, very indubitably good.
- 1:36:50well yes.
- 1:36:51Yeah. Alright, well we'll pass the props.
- 1:36:53So props get a point, a bonus point.
- 1:36:54We're at nine
- 1:36:55points. We only need one more to get stapliest.
- 1:36:57But we've got fantastic foods and where to find them.
- 1:37:01Jonathan, they talk about two things a spoonful of sugar.
- 1:37:07And gingerbread. But they don't show gingerbread.
- 1:37:10In the in the play, they show gingerbread.
- 1:37:13They're gingerbread stars. That this is wood.
- 1:37:16However, my mother
- 1:37:17Mm.
- 1:37:18in law, who played the Bird Lady,
- 1:37:19actually baked me some gingerbread stars,
- 1:37:22and she has the best gingerbread recipe.
- 1:37:24So I love that. However, it's not featured in the movie,
- 1:37:25Okay, that's great. Hmm. Hmm.
- 1:37:28unfortunately.
- 1:37:29Yeah.
- 1:37:30Did you want to drink a spoonful of that
- 1:37:36Medicine.
- 1:37:39Let me tell you, I did.
- 1:37:41Really?
- 1:37:42I did. I am a Robotusin fan myself.
- 1:37:45And to see to
- 1:37:45Jonathan, you nasty individual.
- 1:37:47see a spoonful of like the different colors,
- 1:37:50I thought that was really cool.
- 1:37:51And it tasted like lime cordial and strawberries and like I rum punch
- 1:37:57I guess was the other one. But like I I thought it looked good.
- 1:37:58Yeah. Strawberries
- 1:38:00I don't know.
- 1:38:02To have something like tastes different to like
- 1:38:05To basically like the beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
- 1:38:07like whatever tastes good to that person.
- 1:38:08Yeah. It's that that is some Willy Wonka stuff.
- 1:38:09That's like some Willy Wonka stuff there.
- 1:38:11I was gonna
- 1:38:12Okay.
- 1:38:13give it a point.
- 1:38:14I was not gonna give it a point because I have trauma from Robotessin.
- 1:38:17But maybe that should give me the p give it the point.
- 1:38:19Just
- 1:38:20think of that like pink bubblegum like cold medicine,
- 1:38:22you know?
- 1:38:23~ amoxicillin. That's some good stuff right there.
- 1:38:27I love that.
- 1:38:27No. ~
- 1:38:29Right out of the tube. Alright,
- 1:38:32well if you you feel so strongly about it,
- 1:38:34and you you won me over with a Willy Wonka of it all,
- 1:38:36I'll give it that.
- 1:38:37Mm-hmm.
- 1:38:39So we've got ten points. But does it get eleven with the costume test?
- 1:38:45Yes it does. Obviously.
- 1:38:48yeah. Yeah, I mean
- 1:38:49The
- 1:38:49Mary Poppins outfit is iconic and and also with Bert,
- 1:38:54like yeah.
- 1:38:54Yeah. The Jolly Holiday costumes alone should be in the Smithsonian
- 1:38:58if they aren't already. the Chimney Sweeps costumes,
- 1:39:02~ it i it's iconic. If you have the brush if you don't have the brush
- 1:39:08you kinda look like the newsies,
- 1:39:09but and then every outfit Mary Poppins had was iconic as well.
- 1:39:15So
- 1:39:15Also,
- 1:39:15does it count if people cosplay as Yandu from Guardians of the Galaxy when he's
- 1:39:20like, I'm Mary Poppins, y'all
- 1:39:21Yeah.
- 1:39:24I guess it does count. I'm not gonna count that.
- 1:39:28However, ~ Phil
- 1:39:28They it already got a point. It's just an honorable mention.
- 1:39:32It got the point, yeah. However,
- 1:39:34one of the guys in our ~ show,
- 1:39:36Phil, had a shirt that said I'm Mary Poppins,
- 1:39:38y'all. And he wore that to rehearsal a lot.
- 1:39:38that's cool.
- 1:39:41That's funny.
- 1:39:43Shout out to Phil. Alright,
- 1:39:46well we've got a grand total of eleven points.
- 1:39:50Ta da! Congratulations to Mary Poppins for being a classic,
- 1:39:54a staple, but stapliest of the staples.
- 1:39:59That scored really high.
- 1:40:01very high. Objectively too. Like I was very impressed with this movie.
- 1:40:05It it's in objectively
- 1:40:07a good movie that I'm not gonna rewatch a ton.
- 1:40:09But that's okay. Like it's definitely yeah.
- 1:40:09I know. Yeah. That's kind of a rare thing.
- 1:40:13Like I feel like if it's gonna get stapleist,
- 1:40:15Mhm.
- 1:40:16it's gonna also be rewatchable.
- 1:40:18Yeah. Yeah. If it was just sh if it was shorter,
- 1:40:20And it I'm gonna not
- 1:40:22it would be like an all time classic for me.
- 1:40:24But yeah.
- 1:40:24Yeah.
- 1:40:25And I will rewatch this, just not all the time,
- 1:40:28not every year.
- 1:40:29Yeah.
- 1:40:30Part of it for me too is like I'm not the biggest like musicals guy is part of it.
- 1:40:34Yeah. That's fair.
- 1:40:35So like
- 1:40:36when the it goes on, like a a lot of the song and the numbers go
- 1:40:40on for extended sequences. It's like,
- 1:40:42Okay, well, I'm ready to kinda move on after a bit,
- 1:40:45but Okay.
- 1:40:48Yeah. Well, wow, we did it.
- 1:40:48Well I guess we should move on now.
- 1:40:51Our first episode of ~ IQ Test two point ~ is a stapleist movie.
- 1:40:58So wow, congrats.
- 1:41:01This is great. What are we
- 1:41:04Mm-hmm.
- 1:41:04doing next week, Jonathan? What do you think?
- 1:41:07Well, ~ this is episode one forty nine,
- 1:41:11right? So next week
- 1:41:12Yeah, we're gonna one fifty.
- 1:41:13next week is a special episode one fifty,
- 1:41:16I realized today. And
- 1:41:16I didn't even think about that till just now.
- 1:41:19we're gonna have a special guest on the show
- 1:41:21Okay.
- 1:41:22to cover a very special movie that we all love.
- 1:41:25It's gonna pass,
- 1:41:25All right.
- 1:41:26it's gonna score really good. I already know.
- 1:41:28But we're gonna love talking about it.
- 1:41:28Yeah. Perfect. All right.
- 1:41:30So that's a little tease for next week,
- 1:41:31if you're still listening.
- 1:41:35Wonder who it's gonna be.
- 1:41:36Mm-hmm.
- 1:41:39I'll you a hint. ~ she has seen Mary Poppins on Broadway.
- 1:41:44~ okay. She's
- 1:41:46If you listen to
- 1:41:46the beginning of this episode,
- 1:41:48you would get that reference. That's your that's your
- 1:41:50She's right
- 1:41:51behind you, isn't she?
- 1:41:54Couple room maybe the other room.
- 1:41:55What if she was there the
- 1:41:55whole time just reading on the floor?
- 1:41:58She has joked about that. Like I'll just hang out in there with you.
- 1:42:00~
- 1:42:03newlyweds.
- 1:42:04Mm-hmm.
- 1:42:04So fun. Well alright, well let's ~ s close this out.
- 1:42:09Another day,
- 1:42:10Yeah.
- 1:42:10another staple in the staple pack.
- 1:42:13That was stupid. another day,
- 1:42:17another staple. Well everyone,
- 1:42:19our only question left is Have you seen the Broadway musical?
- 1:42:23Who's who's the villain of this movie?
- 1:42:24And is it better than the movie?
- 1:42:25Sorry.
- 1:42:26Yeah No, that's that's better.
- 1:42:29Yeah.
- 1:42:30another day, another staple. Well everyone,
- 1:42:33our only question left is who do you think the villain of this movie is?
- 1:42:36'Cause I don't know. We can't decide.
