- 0:43Turkish folklore written down by Ignez Kunos.
- 0:46And today's story is the classic switch the Prince with the
- 0:49pauper and then a whole nother epic after that as well.
- 0:57OK, let's begin. The enchanted pomegranate branch
- 1:02and the beauty. There was once a potty Shah who,
- 1:06while being very bored, decided to take a trip with his vizier.
- 1:12Before setting out, however, he called to his vizier and said,
- 1:16so that our departure may be a secret, find me a man that looks
- 1:20like me and set him on the throne.
- 1:23The vizier asked how he could be found.
- 1:27Let's walk around town for a few days and we'll find one, said
- 1:30the Potty Shah. Disguising themselves, they put
- 1:33the plan into action. Entering a pub for some
- 1:37refreshment, they saw a drunk who was the spitting image of
- 1:39the Potty Shah. So they took the publican aside
- 1:43and told him to let the man drink until he was drunker than
- 1:46a boiled owl, and when night came, to throw him out onto the
- 1:49street. This was done, and at midnight
- 1:53the Potty Shah sent the vizier to secretly bring the man back
- 1:56to the palace. There the fellow was washed, put
- 2:00in royal robes and laid out on the Potty Shah's own bed.
- 2:05Now everything was ready for the monarch and his vizier to start
- 2:08their journey. When the drunken fellow awoke in
- 2:12the morning, he saw that he was in the King's palace.
- 2:16What did I do? He asked himself.
- 2:19Maybe I'm dreaming or perhaps even dead and in heaven.
- 2:23After these reflections, he clapped and immediately servants
- 2:27brought him a wash basin and a cup of water.
- 2:30After washing, he drank the coffee and lit his shibuk.
- 2:33I must be the potty Shah, he mused.
- 2:37As it was Friday, the servants begged him to say where the
- 2:40guests should be met. In the quarter where he used to
- 2:43live was a jammy or orator, so he decided that the conversation
- 2:48should be held there and all hurried away to get ready.
- 2:54A fortnight had elapsed since the drunker had left his own
- 2:56home and when his wife heard that the potty show was coming
- 2:59to the local jammy, she prepared a petition which he handed to
- 3:03him as he was leaving the mosque.
- 3:04After the conversation, the Potty Shah took the petition and
- 3:08read as follows. Oh Potty Shah, I have a husband
- 3:12who does nothing but drink day and night.
- 3:15He has not been home now for two weeks nor sent any money for
- 3:18provisions. So now we are dying of hunger.
- 3:22The Potty Shah immediately gave orders that the woman's dwelling
- 3:25should be pulled down and rebuilt on a better plan and
- 3:30also that a monthly pension of 500 gold pieces should be given
- 3:33to her. This was done.
- 3:38The new Potty Shah had three enemies, the innkeeper who threw
- 3:41him out into the street when he was drunk, the butcher who had
- 3:44beaten him because he cannot pay for the meat, and a restaurant
- 3:47owner who wouldn't feed him. He gave orders that they should
- 3:52be beheaded and this was done. In the meantime, the real Potty
- 3:57Shah and his vizier had already travelled A considerable
- 4:00distance. One day they came to a valley
- 4:04where they decided to stop and rest for a while.
- 4:08In a stream that flowed through the valley, they found an apple,
- 4:10which they ate. Now the Potty Shah recollected
- 4:14that when setting out, he had taken an oath to do nothing that
- 4:17was forbidden while on his journey.
- 4:20This made him feel uneasy since he had no way of knowing whether
- 4:23that was permitted to eat the apple or not.
- 4:27Oh, there's nothing you can do, said the Potty Shah.
- 4:30We can only go and ask the owner's permission.
- 4:34As they went along, they came across a farmer plowing.
- 4:37Greeting him, they told him about the apple and when the
- 4:40story was finished, the farmer showed them an orchard with the
- 4:43apple trees from which the apple they had eaten had fallen.
- 4:48He also pointed out the House of the owner of the orchard, and
- 4:51there the potty shot in. His vizier went immediately.
- 4:54They knocked on the door which was opened by an old woman, and
- 4:57to her they also related the incident of the apple.
- 5:01The old woman, saying that the apple trees belong to her
- 5:03daughter, went to consult her about the matter.
- 5:07The daughter sent back a message that if a man were to marry her,
- 5:10permission to eat the apple was granted.
- 5:13The potty shot considered the question and finally agreed to
- 5:16make the maiden his wife. When she heard this, the old
- 5:19woman said, Then I must tell you that my daughter's legs and arms
- 5:24are crooked, she is bald and all together so ugly that no man can
- 5:31bear the sight of her. Don't worry, replied the potty
- 5:35Shah. I won't break my promise.
- 5:39He told his vizier to prepare for a wedding for that very day,
- 5:42as the next morning they had to be off again.
- 5:45Then they went to a neighboring pub to prepare for the wedding.
- 5:48As soon as the maiden was presented to him, the Potty Shah
- 5:52was dumbstruck. My Sultana, he exclaimed, your
- 5:57mother said that you were ugly, while behold, you are the
- 6:00loveliest creature in the world. The maiden said that her mother
- 6:04always spoke about her like that.
- 6:07The wedding took place and the next day the vizir reminded the
- 6:10Potty Shah that they must proceed.
- 6:13The monarch, however, replied that he had made-up his mind to
- 6:15remain at the inn four or five more days.
- 6:18As a matter of fact, he remained for 40 days, and on the 41st he
- 6:22said to his wife, My Sultana, I cannot remain here any longer, I
- 6:27must go. If you should have a son when
- 6:30he's grown up, bind this amulet to his arm, and send him to such
- 6:33and such a country, and tell him to inquire for Osman and Hamza.
- 6:38These were the names the Padishah and his vizier had
- 6:40decided to use upon their travels.
- 6:44They mounted their horses and rode away, not stopping until
- 6:47they had reached home. After arriving at the palace,
- 6:50the first thing they did was to get rid of the fake potty Shah.
- 6:53So at midnight, while he slept, they put him in a basket and set
- 6:56him down by the pub where they had found him a few months ago.
- 7:00When the man woke up, he found himself lying in the street.
- 7:05I must be dreaming, he said, and closed his eyes again.
- 7:08Then he clapped his hands, whereupon the publican appeared
- 7:11to ask him Who is there. The drunkard told him to stop
- 7:16joking or he would be hanged immediately.
- 7:19Open the door. I am the Potty Shah, he called
- 7:23loudly. The landlord opened the door and
- 7:26seeing the drunkard, kicked him away the ladder in a towering
- 7:32rage. Exclaimed, You Rascal, I am the
- 7:34potty Shah. I will certainly hang you for
- 7:37this. In reply the innkeeper took a
- 7:41stick and beat the self styled Potty Shah until he was in a
- 7:44lather, and afterwards he was taken to the madhouse.
- 7:51Meanwhile the Patty Shah said to his vizier, Oh la, la, we
- 7:55brought the man to our palace after he had served our purpose,
- 7:58and then we cast him away. Go and see what's become of him.
- 8:02So the vizier went to the publican and learned that the
- 8:05drunk had gone mad and been taken to the asylum.
- 8:08Going to the lunatic asylum, the vizier heard the man shouting
- 8:11that he was the potty Shah. The vizier told him not to say
- 8:15that he was the potty Shah or it would get worse.
- 8:18Reading the tea leaves, the man went to the owner of the pub and
- 8:21said, Sir, I am a drunk and not the potty Shah.
- 8:26After this confession he was no longer insane and so he was set
- 8:29free. His first thought was to go
- 8:32home, but he had hardly set his eyes on his wife.
- 8:35Then she cried at him. Get out of my sight, you
- 8:39graceless fellow. Where have you been all this
- 8:41time? You have no doubt heard that the
- 8:44potty shop built me a new house and granted me a pension, and
- 8:47now you just want to come and share it.
- 8:50The woman would not have let him in, but the vizier happened to
- 8:53be passing by and heard the angry fighting going up to her.
- 8:56He said, Let your husband in, or I will take everything from you.
- 9:02Recognizing the vizier, the woman's courage failed her, and
- 9:05she let her husband into the house, leaving this worthy
- 9:09couple in place. We will now turn to the owner of
- 9:11the orchard. In due time a son was born to
- 9:15her. When he grew up, his mother,
- 9:17remembering the Padishah's instructions, called her son to
- 9:19her. Your father, she said, left you
- 9:23this amulet, saying that when you grow up, you were to go to
- 9:26his country and ask for Asman and Hamza.
- 9:30Upon hearing this, the youth took the amulet and prepared for
- 9:33his journey. On the way he met the farmer,
- 9:37with whom he rested for a little while.
- 9:40During their conversation, the farmer told the youth that Osman
- 9:43was his friend, and he advised him not to go alone.
- 9:47The boy agreed to take the farmer's son with him, and the
- 9:50two set out. By and by they came to a well,
- 9:54and being overcome with thirst, the farmer said to the youth, I
- 9:58will let you down first, so that you may drink.
- 10:00Afterwards you let me down. The Shahzada accordingly was
- 10:05lowered into the well. But when he had quenched his
- 10:08thirst and was ready to return to the top, the farmer's son
- 10:11called down to him. Swear that you will say that I'm
- 10:14the son of Osman, and that you are the son of the farmer, and
- 10:17promised to never reveal the truth, or I will leave you down
- 10:20there. He had no choice, so Shahzada
- 10:23promised, and was pulled up to the surface.
- 10:28They went on, and in a few weeks they arrived at the capital of
- 10:30the Padishah's Kingdom. They wandered about town asking
- 10:34for Asman and Hamza, when the Padishah heard, and then he
- 10:38ordered the boys to be brought before him.
- 10:41They were taken to the palace, and when the king asked which
- 10:43one was his son, the Shahzad appointed to the other one and
- 10:46named himself as the son of the farmer.
- 10:51So the farm boy was taken into the palace as a Prince, and the
- 10:53other was given a job in the court.
- 10:56Once in a dream, the fake Prince saw Dervish, who presented him
- 11:00with the Princess and gave him the chalice of love.
- 11:03From that time he was a changed man.
- 11:06He could not eat nor drink, sleep nor rest, and he became
- 11:11pale and weak. Physicians and hojas were called
- 11:15one after another, but none of them did him any good.
- 11:19They did not understand his illness, and so they couldn't
- 11:22find a remedy. One day the false Prince said to
- 11:26the parishah, My father, physicians and hojas cannot help
- 11:30me. My illness is a love for the
- 11:33Princess. The king was frightened at the
- 11:37youth, strange words, and feared for his reason.
- 11:40You must not think of her. It is dangerous at the monarch.
- 11:43Her love would only bring death. But the young man continued to
- 11:48get thinner and paler. The potty Shah asked him whether
- 11:52he wanted anything, but the answer was invariably the same.
- 11:55The Princess, the king, felt that his son would surely die if
- 12:00he said no, and that he would be the cause of his death.
- 12:04So trusting that Allah would have mercy upon him, he was
- 12:07about to agree to his son's travel when the fake Prince
- 12:10said, I do not want to go, let me send the farmer's son to get
- 12:15her for me. The parishah immediately sent
- 12:19for the farmer's son and told him to go in search of the
- 12:21Princess and to bring her to marry the Shahzadah.
- 12:26The next day the youth set off in search of the Princess.
- 12:30After some time he came to the seashore, where he saw a little
- 12:32fish floundering on the sand. The creature asked him to throw
- 12:36it back into the water, and he agreed.
- 12:39But first the fish offered him three of its scales, saying,
- 12:42When you're in trouble, burn one of these scales.
- 12:46Accepting them gratefully, the youth threw the fish back into
- 12:49the sea and went on his way. Coming to a great plain, he met
- 12:53an Ant who begged for his help. As it was going to a wedding, it
- 12:57would be late to join his companions.
- 13:00The young man picked up the Ant and carried it to its
- 13:02companions. Before leaving, the insect
- 13:05offered him a piece of its wing, saying, When in trouble, burn
- 13:09this piece of my wing. Dispirited and weary, the fake
- 13:14farmer's son at length reached the thick forest, where he saw a
- 13:17small bird struggling with a large snake.
- 13:21The bird asked for help from the youth, who promptly cut the
- 13:24snake in two. In return, the bird gave him
- 13:27three of her feathers, saying, When in trouble, burn one of
- 13:31these. Once more he went over the
- 13:34mountains and see until he came to a large city.
- 13:37He was now in the Kingdom of the father of the Princess.
- 13:41Going directly to the palace, he begged in the name of Allah that
- 13:45the Patishah would give him his daughter in marriage.
- 13:49First you must accomplish 3 tasks of the Padishah and then
- 13:53you may speak to my daughter. The monarch then took a ring and
- 13:58cast it into the sea and told the Prince to bring it back
- 14:00again in three days or his life would be over.
- 14:05The Prince thought deeply and recollecting the three fish
- 14:08scales, he burnt one of them. Immediately the little fish
- 14:11appeared and said, What is your command, my Sultan?
- 14:16The ring of the Princess has fallen into the sea, fetch it
- 14:19for me, replied the Prince. The fish went down after the
- 14:23ring but couldn't find it down. It went a second time without
- 14:27success, diving 1/3 time and went right down down to the
- 14:31bottom of the seventh sea and brought up a fish.
- 14:37The Prince slit its stomach and found the ring inside.
- 14:40He gave it back to the Potty Shah, who handed it to his
- 14:42daughter. In the neighborhood of the
- 14:45palace was a cave filled with a mixture of ash and Millet.
- 14:49Your second task, said the potty Shah, is to separate the ash
- 14:53from the Millet. The Prince went to The Cave and
- 14:57burnt the ants wing, whereupon all the ants in the world
- 14:59appeared and set out to do the work.
- 15:02The task was thus finished that very day, and in the evening the
- 15:06potty Shah came and satisfied himself that not a grain had
- 15:09been overlooked. One task remains to be done,
- 15:13said the Padishah, and then I will take you to my daughter.
- 15:18Calling a female slave to him, the king split her head open and
- 15:21said to the youth, Thus shall your own head be split, if you
- 15:25cannot restore her to life. The youth left the palace,
- 15:28wondering whether the bird's feather would help him.
- 15:32He burnt 1 and strayed away. A little bird appeared and
- 15:35awaited his command. With a heavy heart the Prince
- 15:40related the difficult tasks that have been set before him.
- 15:44Now the bird belonged to The Perrys, and flying up into the
- 15:47air and out of sight, it soon reappeared with a jug of water.
- 15:52Here, said the bird, this is some water of paradise which
- 15:56will restore the dead to life. Taking it to the palace, the
- 16:00Prince sprinkled some over the corpse, and the maiden arose
- 16:02immediately, as though just awakened from asleep.
- 16:06The Princess was informed of the youth's exploits, and she got
- 16:09ready to meet him. The maiden hid in a small marble
- 16:13kiosk, before which was a golden reservoir, and water poured into
- 16:16it from four sides. In the court was a magnificent
- 16:20garden filled with trees, flowers, and singing birds.
- 16:25When the Prince saw all of this, it seemed as though he were in
- 16:28the gates of heaven. Suddenly the door of the kiosk
- 16:33opened and the garden was wrapped in light.
- 16:37The Princess now appeared in all her radiant beauty.
- 16:40She approached the Prince to address him, but no sooner did
- 16:43she look at him than she fainted.
- 16:46She was carried to the kiosk, and when she came to, she said,
- 16:49O Prince, you are the son of Shah Suleiman, and you can help
- 16:53me in the garden of the Re do a pomegranate branch sings.
- 16:58If you'll bring it to me, I am yours forever.
- 17:03The youth went far away to fulfill the princess's quest.
- 17:07For a month he wandered. Oh, Allah, Creator of all
- 17:11things, he prayed, Show me the right way.
- 17:14Presently he reached the foot of a mountain.
- 17:17There he heard a terrible noise, as though the day of judgement
- 17:21had come. The rocks in the mountains
- 17:23tumbled, and there an evil darkness fell.
- 17:28As the youth bravely went toward the noise, it increased and
- 17:32became even more terrifying. All the while he was enveloped
- 17:36in a whirlwind of dust and smoke.
- 17:39He could not tell whether he was on the right Rd. but he knew
- 17:42that a six months journey should bring him to the garden of the
- 17:44Ray Dew. And that awful noise was created
- 17:47by the talismans of the dew. Continuing on his way, a little
- 17:52garden came into view On the gate there was a shrieking
- 17:56Talisman and also a guard. The Prince went to him and told
- 18:00him what he wanted. Why were you not terrified of
- 18:03the great noise? Asked the astonished guard.
- 18:05All of the talismans were on alert because of you.
- 18:08They even scared me. The Prince asked about the
- 18:11pomegranate branch. It's hard to get, said the guard
- 18:14gravely. But if you aren't a coward, you
- 18:17might succeed. At the end of a three months
- 18:19journey, you will arrive at another place similar to this
- 18:22with other talismans. There you will find another
- 18:25garden, the guard of which is my mother.
- 18:28But do not go near her, wait until she comes to you.
- 18:32Give her my greeting, but do not tell her your business until she
- 18:35questions you. The youth now took the road
- 18:39pointed out to him, and after going for three months he heard
- 18:42the awful sound that seemed impossible to describe.
- 18:46This was the large garden of the Ray Do, and the noise came from
- 18:49his talismans. The youth hid himself behind a
- 18:53rock and saw a human form, which was that of an old woman, about
- 18:5690 years old. Her hair was Snow White, her
- 19:01eyelids red, her eyebrows like 2 arrows.
- 19:04Her eyes gleamed fire and her fingernails were two yards long,
- 19:09and she leaned on a staff as she sniffed the air.
- 19:13She was the guardian of the garden.
- 19:16Coming up to the youth, she demanded to know what he was
- 19:19doing there. The Prince gave her a greeting
- 19:22from her son. A little jerk.
- 19:25She wheezed. So you've met him?
- 19:29Did my miserable son think I should have mercy on you that he
- 19:33sent you to me? I'll soon end you.
- 19:38So saying, she sees the youth and shook him fiercely.
- 19:42The Prince didn't know what had happened.
- 19:44He only saw that he was on the back of something that had
- 19:46neither eyes nor ears, and was shriveled up like a toad.
- 19:50This creature was running off with him, taking gigantic
- 19:53strides and springing overseas in a single bound.
- 19:58Suddenly the hideous thing set him down and said, Whatever you
- 20:01hear, whatever you see, be careful not to speak of it, or
- 20:06you are lost. In a moment it was gone as in a
- 20:12dream. The Prince now saw the endless
- 20:13garden, with streams and waterfalls and trees and flowers
- 20:17and fruit. All around was the sound of
- 20:20songbirds, as though the air itself for a song.
- 20:24Looking around, the youth entered the garden and heard a
- 20:28heartbreaking sound of weeping. Remembering the pomegranate
- 20:32branch, he began to look for it. In the middle of the garden was
- 20:37a small Conservatory, and in it hung a number of pomegranates.
- 20:41He plucked a branch, and at once a fearful cry was heard.
- 20:45A mortal is killing us. Seized with dread, the youth
- 20:50fled from the garden. Quick run shouted the nameless
- 20:55thing waiting at the gate. He jumped on its back, and with
- 20:59one bound he was on the other side of the sea.
- 21:02Now, for the first time, these looked at the pomegranate
- 21:04branch. He saw that there were 50
- 21:07pomegranates, each of which sang a different song, as though all
- 21:11the music of the world were brought together there.
- 21:15Next he met the old woman, who was 90 years old.
- 21:19Take good care of the pomegranate branch, said the old
- 21:22woman. Never let it out of your sight.
- 21:25If you can listen to it throughout your wedding day, the
- 21:28pomegranates will love you. You need fear nothing, for they
- 21:32will protect you in any trouble. Taking leave of the mother, the
- 21:37Prince went to her son, who told him to listen to the old woman's
- 21:39advice. Then the youth made his way to
- 21:42the Princess. The maiden awaited him
- 21:45anxiously, for she loved the Prince so fondly that her days
- 21:48were filled with fear on his behalf lest any misfortune
- 21:51befall him. The maiden hurried to meet the
- 21:54Prince, and the pomegranate branch chanted the union of
- 21:57their two hearts and such exquisite strains that they seem
- 22:00to be lifted up from this earth to the Paradise of Allah.
- 22:06Their wedding lasted 40 days and 40 nights and all the time they
- 22:10listen to the singing of the pomegranates.
- 22:14When the feast ended, the Prince said, Like yourself, I have a
- 22:17father and mother. We have already celebrated our
- 22:19marriage here. We will now go to my parents and
- 22:22celebrate there also. Accordingly, they set out on the
- 22:27following day. When they arrived, the youth
- 22:30went to the Potty Shah and reported that he had succeeded
- 22:32in bringing the Princess with him.
- 22:35The king praised him for his bravery and skill and gave him a
- 22:38valuable present. Then he made preparations for
- 22:42the princess's marriage to the fake shahzada.
- 22:45When the maiden saw that she was intended to marry the fake
- 22:47Prince, she slapped him in the face.
- 22:51He ran to the potty Shah to complain, and the monarch,
- 22:54suspecting there was more than meets the eye, went to the
- 22:57maiden and begged her to explain her conduct.
- 23:01The Princess implored the potty Shah not to allow the marriage
- 23:03to take place until the farmer's son had been put to death.
- 23:08So the king ordered this youth to be brought before him, and he
- 23:10was beheaded in his presence. Immediately the Princess took
- 23:15the paradise water, sprinkled the body of the youth, and once
- 23:18again he arose. Now said the Princess, you have
- 23:22died and risen again, so you were released from your oath,
- 23:25and you can tell all that is befallen you.
- 23:29On this the youth related how after leaving his mother, he met
- 23:32with the farmer's son. He spoke of the incident at the
- 23:35well and of everything connected in his perilous quest for the
- 23:38Princess. He also established his identity
- 23:42by showing the amulet he had received from his mother.
- 23:45Being convinced that the youth was truly his son, the potty
- 23:48shot embraced him and kissed him repeatedly.
- 23:51The imposter was executed and the prince's mother was brought
- 23:54to the palace in time for the wedding of her son with the
- 23:57Princess. The End.
- 24:25Who? That went on for a while.
- 24:27I hope you enjoy these longer stories.
- 24:29I thought the story would be over when the Prince returned
- 24:31and then when he found the Princess, but no, he still had
- 24:33to go and get some pomegranates. Still, it's a fun story of love
- 24:37and doing the right thing. And the podcast shout out is to
- 24:40Spellbound and Gagged. This is a spicy podcast, just
- 24:43like Sandman Stories after Dark. The host is Ellen from Just the
- 24:46Zoo of Us, but she wants to balance some of that wholesome
- 24:48goodness with a show of her own. So she explores topics that are
- 24:51fun for her. So buckle in and give her a
- 24:54listen. And the listener shout out is to
- 24:56Strasbourg. Of course, when I first heard
- 24:59the name, I assumed it was a Germantown.
- 25:01But this is the largest city in the grand E apartment of France.
- 25:04Of course, the language spoken in this town is a mixture of the
- 25:07two major languages in the area, German and French.
- 25:11And if I get a chance to go back to France, I would love to visit
- 25:14the National Library in Strasbourg as it is the second
- 25:16biggest in France. And so I say an Alsatian to my
- 25:20listener in Strasbourg, Merci vermos UN bisbar.
- 25:25Thank you and see you later.
