- 0:00With manna available, you don't have to spend as much time
- 0:02cooking, and the Lord is asking them to spend their time with
- 0:06their flocks. The women were using these
- 0:09bronze mirrors to seduce a spouse.
- 0:12The other thing that's interesting about these mirrors,
- 0:14they were used to ward off evil spirits.
- 0:16Once you get to the book of Hebrews, you get some very clear
- 0:19information on the temple endowment.
- 0:21As soon as he calls for help, the women jump in eagerly.
- 0:25They volunteer. They donate their time and their
- 0:27skills. When Joseph Smith was on the
- 0:29earth, he organized the Relief Societies.
- 0:32And he tells the sisters, hello, Welcome back to Scripture
- 0:40Central. I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of
- 0:43the team that tries to build enduring faith in Jesus Christ
- 0:46by illuminating and defending the Scriptures.
- 0:49And today in the ending up the book of Exodus, we're going to
- 0:52look specifically at those handmaidens and harems and
- 0:55heroines and the female figures as they are seeking their
- 0:58Messiah. And we have so much information
- 1:01in these last five chapters of Exodus.
- 1:04It's the time when Moses is finally putting the Tabernacle
- 1:08together. You know, as soon as he calls
- 1:10for help, the women jump in eagerly.
- 1:13They volunteer. They donate their time and their
- 1:15skills. They have a lot of precious
- 1:17goods that they're using to help build and furnish the Lord's
- 1:20house. In chapter 35 of Exodus verse 5
- 1:24and 10 read Let everyone whose heart is willing to bring an
- 1:28offering to the Lord. Gold, silver, bronze, blue,
- 1:32purple, scarlet yarn, fine linen and goat's hair.
- 1:35And every skilled Craftsman among you come.
- 1:39You know they they do and they. But I just have to remind you
- 1:43before you can do any spinning, you've got to gather your sheep
- 1:47and shear them. Card the water or the goat's
- 1:50hair, and then before you can weave, you've got to spin it.
- 1:55And this takes hours and hours. And then the weaving begins
- 1:58before you can sew it. In fact, I did a little bit of
- 2:02research on this. Spinning wool with a hand
- 2:04spindle took about four to 8 hours to produce 100 grams.
- 2:09Or it's a small skein of yarn, 3.5 ounces.
- 2:13And then if you want finer, more skilled yarn, it takes longer.
- 2:17I would like to read from chapter 35, verse 21 in the NIV.
- 2:23Moses calls everyone whose heart stirred within and whose spirit
- 2:27prompted him, came and brought an offering to the Lord of the
- 2:32works for the tent of the meeting, for all its services
- 2:36and the holy garments. And then they describe the holy
- 2:40garments and what was involved. And linen was difficult to
- 2:43prepare, as well as the wool. The women and the men join in.
- 2:48They bring their brooches, their earrings, their gold, their
- 2:51necklaces. Now what this tells me is not
- 2:53everybody gave everything to that awful golden calf shortly
- 2:57before that. There's still some things that
- 3:01they are giving and that these people who are now giving have
- 3:04hearts that are prepared to build an offering to God,
- 3:07Jehovah, not necessarily to this golden calf, but as they present
- 3:13these gold and jewels. It's referred to as a wave
- 3:17offering before the Lord. It's a Thanksgiving offering.
- 3:21And the women that were wise hearted did spin.
- 3:24Now this is verse 25 in Exodus 35 in the King James Version.
- 3:28But this idea of women that were wise hearted did spin can also
- 3:32be translated. Women who are skilled.
- 3:35You know, the Hebrew word refers to wisdom or skill or expertise,
- 3:39you know, and then we get a much broader picture of how these
- 3:44women are spending their time. You know, with manna available,
- 3:47you don't have to spend as much time cooking.
- 3:49And the Lord is asking them to spend their time with their
- 3:52flocks, shearing, carting the wool and then spinning it and
- 3:57weaving it. And the same thing, of course,
- 3:59with the fine linen. Now, just as a memory, you make
- 4:04fine linen through the flax plant and you have to either
- 4:07plant it or you have to harvest it.
- 4:09And I don't know where you can find it in this place, but you
- 4:12first harvest, then you soak, then you break up the grasses
- 4:17and you comb it, you weave it, the plants together.
- 4:20It's, it's extremely laborious and it's a very thin compared to
- 4:25wool. And so it takes much longer to
- 4:28produce as much. But we're told in verse 29 of
- 4:32Exodus 35 that all the men and the women of the Israelites
- 4:36whose heart prompted them brought these free will
- 4:39offerings to the Lord for all the work of the Lord through
- 4:42Moses had commanded them to do. And these women that are part of
- 4:47this bring more than there was even necessary.
- 4:51When you turn over to Exodus chapter 36, we're told in verse
- 4:556 that Moses had to command them to stop bringing their
- 4:58contributions because they had so many.
- 5:00And when it was time to make the brazen sea or the washing the
- 5:06large, large large basin out of brass.
- 5:10We're told in verse 8 that they ask the women who are serving at
- 5:15the entrance of the Tabernacle or the Tent of meeting to donate
- 5:20their mirrors. Now, the first question I have
- 5:23in verse 8 is what are these women serving doing?
- 5:26You know, are they musicians? Do we have the Tabernacle in
- 5:29place yet? No, we don't.
- 5:31So are they just helping organize all the donations?
- 5:35I don't know. Obviously the sacrifices had
- 5:37been offered outside without the Tabernacle, with the women
- 5:40acting as the custodians. Were they acting?
- 5:44I, I, I'm not sure. We're not told, but we are told
- 5:47that from the very beginning of this, 40 years in the
- 5:50wilderness, the women are serving at the entrance of the
- 5:53Tabernacle. This makes me very, very happy
- 5:55because that is not the case. By the time you get to the New
- 5:58Testament, the women aren't allowed anywhere.
- 6:00They're they're secluded over in their one little corner by the
- 6:03treasury in the court of the women, but here they are
- 6:06actively participating and serving.
- 6:09The other thing that's interesting about these mirrors
- 6:11is we've got examples of them in Cana and in Egypt, and they were
- 6:15used to ward off evil spirits. Sometimes I hope that was not
- 6:19the case with these women in this situation.
- 6:21I doubt it, but 1000 more years later, the midrash is looking
- 6:27back on this and they suggest that the women were using these
- 6:33bronze mirrors to seduce a spouse and that the mirror was
- 6:36supposed to help with fertility and one woman supposedly had
- 6:40sextuplets because of this. You know, I just think that's
- 6:45not accurate information that's been passed out.
- 6:48But when these women donate their mirrors, Moses enlists
- 6:53metal workers to melt them down. And these mirrors are used to
- 6:57create the brass washing basin, which is referred to in the
- 7:01Scripture as the sea of brass. And I just personally think that
- 7:04their gift is more meaningful when I understand how meager
- 7:08their existence was. You know, they're 40 years in
- 7:11the wilderness. They don't know they're going to
- 7:12be there that long quite yet, I don't think.
- 7:14But they do know that they have very, very little, only what
- 7:19they could carry on their backs and out of their meager
- 7:23resources in the desert. They are sacrificing one of
- 7:27their personal items. I think it's sort of significant
- 7:30that these mirrors or these polished brass that they could
- 7:34some get a foggy reflection of themselves, focus sort of on
- 7:38themselves. And they are now using them to
- 7:40focus on building God's Kingdom here in the desert.
- 7:44By the time we get to Exodus chapter 40, the Lord tells Moses
- 7:49that on New Year's Day, on the anniversary of the Passover,
- 7:54they are to go in and anoint the different vessels and the
- 7:59furniture and prepare it. Remember, in Hebrew the word
- 8:03anoint is Messiah. Messiah is how we say it in
- 8:07English. And the Lord calls them to begin
- 8:10anointing the vessels, the altar, and the brass basin.
- 8:18And then you go into the holy place and there's three pieces
- 8:21of furniture there. They're very small table for the
- 8:24incense, just about 12 by 1218 by 18, depending on what the
- 8:29cubit is. And then you go to the bread of
- 8:32the the table for the shoe bread, which is about 24 by 18
- 8:36or so. It's also a small table covered
- 8:39up with brass. And then you go in.
- 8:42You have the menorah. This is also anointed.
- 8:46Anything that is anointed is to become holy.
- 8:50And as these articles in the Temple are anointed to become
- 8:55holy, you realize that if a holy of person comes in and touches
- 9:01them, then they receive some of that holiness.
- 9:05And as you go through the veil into the holy of Holies or into
- 9:10the throne room, was that is where it was to be placed the
- 9:15ark of the covenant, and that is also anointed.
- 9:19This becomes the throne of God or the throne room of God with
- 9:22the angels on either end. You know, anointing was part of
- 9:26the ancient world. They anointed kings, they
- 9:29anointed priests, they anointed sacred things.
- 9:32But when we are looking at the way God does it, it's not how
- 9:36it's done in the world. These priests were next
- 9:40anointed, but they first had to be washed.
- 9:43We read about this not only in Exodus chapter 40, verse 12, but
- 9:46also in First Kings. And then you order the New
- 9:48Testament. You read about it in Ephesians
- 9:50and in Hebrews and even in the Doctrine Covenants.
- 9:53I love section 124, verse 27, talking about the need for the
- 9:58washings to become physically clean, to represent the
- 10:02spiritual cleansing that our Savior will do.
- 10:05And then they were clothed and the sons of Aaron wore white
- 10:10linens. Aaron himself would have worn
- 10:13the very special high priestly garments.
- 10:15And the women were the ones who were having to find this blue.
- 10:19You know, it's usually they got blue from inside these small
- 10:23little sea urchin animals down on the Philistine coast.
- 10:25I don't know where they're finding it in the Sinai
- 10:27Peninsula, unless they had some other forms of dyes, but these
- 10:32were very rare and very difficult to receive.
- 10:36The white linens would have been a little bit easier.
- 10:39As we look throughout the Old Testament, you will see examples
- 10:42of anointings when the prophet Samuel anoints David to be the
- 10:46next king, and Saul and Solomon, you know, all of these
- 10:49anointings are there. And I thought as we're in the
- 10:51book of Leviticus and looking at the anointings there, it would
- 10:57be interesting to see which scriptures have examples of
- 11:02saving ordinances. And as we refer to saving
- 11:05ordinances, I'm referring to those of baptism and the
- 11:09washings and the anointings, the temple endowment, the ceilings
- 11:13to families. Then there's other ordinances
- 11:15that we don't hear of very often, but they're part of the
- 11:18scriptural text, the washing of feet, receiving one's calling
- 11:22election made sure. So as I look at the Old
- 11:25Testament and the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, I was
- 11:28thrilled to see a lot of these examples.
- 11:30Now the Old Testament, not too many examples, just a handful,
- 11:35but in the New Testament, you know, there's 99 examples, just
- 11:39a baptism. And as we go down to this
- 11:41washing anointing, we see it in Ephesians and in Second
- 11:45Corinthians and in the Book of Revelation and even in the
- 11:48Epistle of First John. So these things were not
- 11:52unknown. And once you get to the book of
- 11:54Hebrews, you get some very clear information on the temple
- 11:57endowment. And on 1st Corinthians Chapter
- 12:0011, the women have to veil their heads during a time of special
- 12:04prayers and prophesying. So these things are not unknown
- 12:08to the early Christian Church. The amazing thing is in the Book
- 12:12of Mormon, we have 144 references to baptism.
- 12:16We've got several of the washings and the anointings and
- 12:19the clothing and the temple endowment and the ceilings of
- 12:23families even. And then of course, those who
- 12:25have been promised exaltation. We have a whole list of those
- 12:28two. So if you want this information,
- 12:30it's on my hand out which should always be attached or on our
- 12:33slides as we're going through Doctrine Covenants saturated
- 12:37with all of these Pearl great price just has the baptisms and
- 12:44washing anointing and clothing, but still these ordinances began
- 12:51in the Old Testament. We're told in the book of of
- 12:53Moses that even the our first parents, Adam and Eve had
- 12:57received these. But as we talk about Moses
- 13:01preparing the Tabernacle and the Lord commanding him to anoint
- 13:05these sacred things, each one of them are a type of the Messiah.
- 13:10And remember the word Messiah. Messiah means the anointed one,
- 13:14or in Greek, by the time we have the New Testament we call it
- 13:17Christ, and there the original text always says Jesus the
- 13:22Christ as if it were Jesus the Messiah or Jesus the Anointed. 1
- 13:29And as he suffered in Gethsemane, and which means the
- 13:33place of the olive press, and was crushed under the sins of
- 13:38the world, he was able to produce what was required for
- 13:43the atonement so that he could share his anointing with us and
- 13:48those who had the opportunity to receive it in this life.
- 13:52Cherish that gift, and those who have not cherish it on the other
- 13:56side of the veil. But this example of Aaron being
- 14:01washed and anointed and clothed and his sons at the door of the
- 14:06Tabernacle is beautifully described in Exodus chapter 40,
- 14:11verses 12 to 16. And as they go through this
- 14:15order, they were washed 1st and then clothed and then anointed
- 14:20in that order. And Aaron, we're told, had these
- 14:23beautiful garments. He was not wearing the white
- 14:25linen, but he did put on the white linen garments on the Day
- 14:28of Atonement, which is Leviticus chapter 16.
- 14:31And on that day he dressed like all the other priests, and it
- 14:34was white linens, but there's a headpiece that he wears, and on
- 14:39the brim of the headpiece is engraven in a golden piece.
- 14:44Holiness to the Lord and this great high priest, you only have
- 14:49one and initially it's one in your whole lifetime.
- 14:52You are called as the first born of Aaron and then you maintain
- 14:56that if you are righteous throughout your life.
- 14:59And, and we see this even at the time of the New Testament in the
- 15:05book of Hebrews, they talk about Christ as the great high priest.
- 15:09But these early descendants of Aaron would wear the 2 Onyx
- 15:13stones, wear the urine thummim where this beautiful blue
- 15:17garment and it had little embroidery of pomegranates and
- 15:20bells hanging on the bottom. It's the women who are making
- 15:23all this. The women are the ones who are
- 15:25doing the spinning and the weaving.
- 15:28And this ephod had the beautiful 12 Stones that have the names of
- 15:33the 12 tribes of Israel. I think he is representing our
- 15:37Lord. He is a type and shadow, and His
- 15:41breastplate is symbolic, especially with the Urim and the
- 15:45Thummim, to be able to see the omniscience of God.
- 15:48And he has a sash. And each of these are given
- 15:51symbolic meaning when we get to the New Testament in the book of
- 15:55Ephesians, there's one man out of all Israel who has this
- 16:00opportunity to enter in and do these sacrifices, especially in
- 16:05to the Holy of Holies. But when Joseph Smith was on the
- 16:09earth, he organized the relief Societies.
- 16:12And he tells the sisters, we have this all in our Joseph
- 16:16Smith Papers projects. I have desired to organize the
- 16:20sisters in the order of the priesthood.
- 16:23I now have the key by which to do it.
- 16:25And another sister who was at this meeting, Sarah M Kimball,
- 16:29remembered that Joseph said I will organize you under the
- 16:33priesthood after the pattern of the priesthood, because all
- 16:36these women in the Relief Society, he hoped, would become
- 16:40temple priestesses. Women who serve in the temple
- 16:44are priestesses in Joseph's vocabulary, and Joseph wanted to
- 16:49make a Kingdom of priestesses, according to Bathsheba Biggler
- 16:54Smith's journal. Now, Eliza R Snow is the one
- 16:58who's writing out the minutes for these meetings.
- 17:01And she recorded that this society was to become a Kingdom
- 17:05of priests as in Enoch's day, as in Paul's day.
- 17:10And that tells us that not only was this something that was part
- 17:15of the lower law of Moses, but it was also part of the higher
- 17:19law of Enoch's day and Paul's day.
- 17:23And when the endowment was first given by Joseph, shortly after
- 17:27the relief study was organized on May 4th, 1842, Joseph met
- 17:31with 9 men in the upstairs of the red brick store.
- 17:34And then a year and a half later, in late September of
- 17:381843, when Emma was ready, he was able to give her her
- 17:43washings, anointings and her endowment in their bedroom.
- 17:48But returning back to the Book of Leviticus, when it's time to
- 17:52set up the temple, all the free will offerings have been given.
- 17:56Everyone is ready. Moses is given a pattern by
- 18:01which to set up the Tabernacle. Remember, this is a portable
- 18:04tent, but it is extremely well organized and has the most
- 18:10wonderful things that available to them at the time.
- 18:14And they all had to make enormous sacrifices.
- 18:17I think there's something marvelous about the fact that
- 18:20everyone contributed to this. Everyone is working as they
- 18:24describe how it's put together. It's in the order of the
- 18:28creation. In the creation it was darkness
- 18:31before light. So they start with the darkness
- 18:34layers, those that cut out all the light.
- 18:36You know, the badger skin out there, several different layers
- 18:39of the Tabernacle, you know, the waterproofing layers.
- 18:41And, and they do it all in the order of creation.
- 18:46And as the seven days or the seven time periods of creation
- 18:50are explained in Genesis, that is how the Tabernacle, when it
- 18:55says, let there be light, they bring in the menorah which
- 18:58represents the tree of life. And just as a reminder, the
- 19:02priest had to be first washed and then clothed and anointed,
- 19:08and then they would go on the path, the way back to the tree
- 19:13of life. Because they've offered
- 19:15sacrifices, they are then cleansed.
- 19:17Their sins are taken by our God, who is the great and last
- 19:22sacrifice. And it's just typologically
- 19:25represented by the lamb without blemish.
- 19:27But all of these things represent our Savior.
- 19:30They are types and shadows of our Savior.
- 19:32Nephi understood this. King Benjamin understood this.
- 19:35Alma understood this. We don't see it too often in the
- 19:38Old Testament, but we see it in that ancient text.
- 19:42And as they then enter into the holy place, they offer their
- 19:47prayers at the incense offers altar.
- 19:51They have the unleavened bread at the shoebread, the bread of
- 19:54his presence, and the wine and the menorah, the beautiful
- 20:00representation of the tree of life.
- 20:02And then once a year. The High priest is able to enter
- 20:08through the veil into the Holy of Holies, into the presence of
- 20:12God. This is called the Way, the way
- 20:15back to the Tree of Life. Do you remember in the Garden of
- 20:17Eden there was trees and flowers?
- 20:20And so inside this holy place the Lord commanded the Craftsman
- 20:24to carve in trees and animals and in the gold inlay.
- 20:28They have these beautiful representations of the Garden of
- 20:31Eden. And then the veil itself is to
- 20:33look like the cosmos, and they have blue and and scarlet and
- 20:37all sorts of wonderful things woven into this.
- 20:41And then of course, the angels on either side of the Ark of the
- 20:44Covenant. And I believe this typifies the
- 20:48mercy seat of the empty tomb where we have two angels on
- 20:54either side. But this work of building the
- 20:56temple, this work of developing a Kingdom of priests, of
- 21:02preparing a people who are holy and sanctified, developing a way
- 21:07back to the Garden of Eden, back into the presence of the Lord,
- 21:11is something that was restored in our dispensation as well.
- 21:15And I am so grateful that the women were involved a little bit
- 21:19then and we are involved a lot more now.
- 21:22And I am so grateful that we have had many prophets in a row
- 21:27who have emphasized the need to go to the temple as often as you
- 21:30can. And there, if you are looking,
- 21:33you will see the Lord. And I have seen the Lord in my
- 21:36life. I have felt the Spirit of God
- 21:38witnessing to me that our temples are houses of God.
- 21:43And I pray as you read these beautiful sections and these
- 21:47chapters that you not only can appreciate the efforts of these
- 21:53early children of Israel, but you can have a greater desire to
- 21:57return to the Temple more often and feel of its sanctification
- 22:02in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
