- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside. The Birds is back. What's going on everybody? It's
- 0:14Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan. We hope everybody enjoyed their Super.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Bowl, and now that it's over, the true off season
- 0:23Speaker 2: for every single team has begun. Of course, you know,
- 0:27Speaker 2: the Patriots and Seahawks are going to figure out how
- 0:29Speaker 2: hard it is to get back, which the Eagles just
- 0:32Speaker 2: experienced themselves. Adam, you're back from Santa Clara. You're out
- 0:36Speaker 2: there and or San Francisco, both media row and you
- 0:40Speaker 2: came back to the Polar Ice Caps. Was that fun
- 0:42Speaker 2: for you?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Oh? Man? Well, I you know, I don't go to
- 0:44Speaker 3: the game and let's have to work at which I don't.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I rather, you know, I don't like coming home on
- 0:48Speaker 3: Monday morning the rush chef of the game and like
- 0:51Speaker 3: washing him home. But yes, so no, the only issue
- 0:53Speaker 3: coming back Saturday is just figures. Twenty minutes before we landed,
- 0:57Speaker 3: the flight was great. That's when the guy happened took
- 1:01Speaker 3: place fifty mile an hour. Gus and I had not
- 1:03Speaker 3: been on a plane. Okay, Look, if you fly, you
- 1:06Speaker 3: know a lot or over the years, you're gonna eventually
- 1:09Speaker 3: have turbulence. Yeah, turbulence usually doesn't bother me. But when
- 1:12Speaker 3: the plane was shaking, it was a little bit weird.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Was you didn't know what it was going to happen.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And my wife had to remind me how bad the
- 1:19Speaker 3: weather was back here. So yeah, I had to defrost
- 1:21Speaker 3: the rest of the day.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not a pancker by nature, but if you're
- 1:25Speaker 2: on a plane and you start to see other people panic,
- 1:28Speaker 2: it's a weird feeling. You almost feel like, oh man.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Should I be should I be panicking? You start to
- 1:33Speaker 1: see people getting a little nervous. But yeah, turbulence is
- 1:35Speaker 1: never fun, but you're right, it is a part of flying.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You have to deal with it.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Also, let's talk about this all right. So you get
- 1:42Speaker 2: back you you're out there talking to some people. You've
- 1:44Speaker 2: got some mintel, which is good.
- 1:45Speaker 1: We'll get into the podcast. The Eagles have a lot
- 1:47Speaker 1: of work to do. You know, we'll.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Continue to talk about offensive staff. But I did want
- 1:52Speaker 2: to just inform everybody of how quickly this all happens. Now,
- 1:55Speaker 2: you know, the Super Bowls over February seventeenth, which is
- 1:58Speaker 2: next week, is when they start. Clubs can start designating
- 2:01Speaker 2: the franchise or transition tag. A week after that. Forebuary
- 2:06Speaker 2: twenty third is when the combine will start. That'll go
- 2:08Speaker 2: to March second, and then March ninth, okay, which is
- 2:12Speaker 2: a month from today, is when the free agency madness begins.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So some people think a month as an eternity, But
- 2:18Speaker 2: in the NFL, when you think about all the decisions
- 2:21Speaker 2: you have to make, all the in house free agents,
- 2:22Speaker 2: all the out of out guys you may want. The
- 2:25Speaker 2: Eagles are still putting together, a coaching staff will get
- 2:27Speaker 2: into that, and there's a lot of you know, unknown
- 2:30Speaker 2: situations around players.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So a month goes by pretty quickly to make all
- 2:34Speaker 1: these decisions. It does.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a little bit earlier this year free agency.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Remember they don't wait till the signing period. The agreement
- 2:42Speaker 3: start forty eight hours before that. So yeah, it's uh
- 2:46Speaker 3: kind it's kind of a different deal for the for
- 2:49Speaker 3: the NFL to do it a little bit this early.
- 2:50Speaker 3: They don't typically do that, but it always depends all,
- 2:54Speaker 3: you know, the calendar, when is the you know what
- 2:57Speaker 3: date do they want to start? And we've talked about
- 2:59Speaker 3: this before. Thank goodness, they don't do it at midnight anymore.
- 3:02Speaker 3: That was the absolute worst.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oh god awful.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I still remember being up at like almost one in
- 3:07Speaker 2: the morning. This is like writing days like two thousand
- 3:10Speaker 2: and eight, I think when the Asante Samuel signing went
- 3:13Speaker 2: down for the Eagles and and it was burning the
- 3:16Speaker 2: candle at both ends that.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Night, no doubt.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, so you were out in San Francisco,
- 3:22Speaker 2: Santa Clara area, Bay area.
- 3:24Speaker 1: We'll talk about that at the time.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Probably, Yeah, you were there when the news came down
- 3:30Speaker 2: that Jeff Staltin announced on his own social media account
- 3:33Speaker 2: that he was done with coaching the Eagles offensive line.
- 3:36Speaker 2: He thanked Philadelphians, not exactly the organization. What was there
- 3:41Speaker 2: while you were out there? What was that reaction like
- 3:43Speaker 2: from people?
- 3:43Speaker 1: Were shocking?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Shocking and look you're there are a ton of retired players,
- 3:49Speaker 3: some current players are out there, but shocked just just
- 3:54Speaker 3: like because.
- 3:57Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Sometimes depending on he with like big doms, a bigger
- 4:01Speaker 3: celebrity than Staltlin. Obviously the team, we know it is
- 4:04Speaker 3: more important. Who was more important with Stoutlin in terms
- 4:07Speaker 3: of on field. Yeah, but yeah, people were shocked, and
- 4:12Speaker 3: it's not just being there and uh in San Francisco
- 4:16Speaker 3: for four days, it's just talk around the league was shocking. Like,
- 4:19Speaker 3: it's just not what you were expecting. I mean, it's
- 4:23Speaker 3: not not you know that that was really especially the
- 4:26Speaker 3: week before. Everything we had heard was Okay, it sounds good,
- 4:29Speaker 3: like he's gonna come back in some capacity. Then we've
- 4:33Speaker 3: got the his he put his statement out, which would
- 4:36Speaker 3: say he's not coming back. It doesn't mean and I
- 4:38Speaker 3: know you'll have some information, but it was just definitely
- 4:42Speaker 3: it's been a it's I mean, you're talking about almost
- 4:44Speaker 3: the entire off not all of them, but a majority
- 4:49Speaker 3: of the offensive coaches won't be back. Yeah, hard to believe.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, sweeping changes and as you said in the last
- 4:56Speaker 2: pot and we said we would double check on it
- 4:59Speaker 2: and get.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Into it more.
- 4:59Speaker 2: This was this was not a soft firing. This was
- 5:02Speaker 2: not the Eagles trying to make it so that Staltin
- 5:06Speaker 2: was not part of the organization going forward. This was
- 5:08Speaker 2: Staltlin's decision.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Yes, so what Oh yeah, he definitely a decision. I
- 5:14Speaker 3: mean that that was like he saw a statement and
- 5:17Speaker 3: he said he I'm still trying to figure out like
- 5:26Speaker 3: why then when he put it out, it's kind of
- 5:27Speaker 3: the timing was odd, Okay, I mean it's his decision.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Whatever he wants to do. He's still on our contract,
- 5:33Speaker 3: but just the wording of it was kind of I
- 5:37Speaker 3: just and why not a joint statement, But you know,
- 5:40Speaker 3: it's not like we know the guy, so it's you know,
- 5:42Speaker 3: I don't know what what his thinking was. Then he
- 5:45Speaker 3: just put their statement outs just uh, I don't know.
- 5:48Speaker 3: It's just a little different.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, And they've been you know, on social media thanking
- 5:52Speaker 2: stay all the pictures. I mean, it has it has
- 5:55Speaker 2: all the makings of this is it. You know, he's
- 5:58Speaker 2: not couching coaching the offensive line. I spoke to a
- 6:00Speaker 2: couple of people, you know, back home just to have
- 6:02Speaker 2: close ties to the organization, who know other people in
- 6:05Speaker 2: the organization have come through the organization. And from what
- 6:07Speaker 2: I understand, the Eagles in Stoutland are going to work
- 6:11Speaker 2: on a settlement here and maybe it's already done, but
- 6:14Speaker 2: they're going to have a settlement. So that because he
- 6:16Speaker 2: is under contract technically with the Eagles, but he's not. Yeah,
- 6:20Speaker 2: he's under contract, but the settlement would enable him to
- 6:24Speaker 2: not be a part of the staff this year and
- 6:27Speaker 2: he's going to take some time to focus on his
- 6:30Speaker 2: Stoutland University thing, which is you know, training and developing
- 6:34Speaker 2: offensive lineman. Obviously it won't be Eagles offensive lineman, but
- 6:38Speaker 2: we'll see what would happen then in twenty twenty seven,
- 6:42Speaker 2: getting back into coaching for probably another team, but it
- 6:47Speaker 2: doesn't sound like he'll be able to coach another team
- 6:50Speaker 2: in the NFL in twenty twenty six. That'll probably be
- 6:52Speaker 2: part of the settlement, is what I gather. And so
- 6:56Speaker 2: they're basically going their separate ways here.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I love to hear from him. Okay, that was his statement.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I'd love to hear what. I don't know. Just the
- 7:09Speaker 3: whole thing to me is very strange. We know he
- 7:12Speaker 3: got he got the wrong game coordinating all that came
- 7:16Speaker 3: in with it.
- 7:16Speaker 1: He lost that.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I believe it was in October. We were told. I
- 7:20Speaker 3: know it was out the Inquire put it out first,
- 7:21Speaker 3: but the timeframe somewhere in October.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know what week.
- 7:26Speaker 3: But anyway, and what, really, I would have loved to
- 7:30Speaker 3: have known how Syrianne sits him down and says, okay,
- 7:32Speaker 3: we're doing this, and you know what, what did he
- 7:36Speaker 3: tell him? Whatever? He had to have a reason him,
- 7:38Speaker 3: some sort of reason mm hmm of why. Yeah, it's
- 7:43Speaker 3: just uh, it's just bizarre to me. It's just uh,
- 7:45Speaker 3: it's we know when we've done the sure this will
- 7:49Speaker 3: be year nine. There's been some bizarre things happening. Every
- 7:51Speaker 3: team goes through the stuff where you go, what in
- 7:53Speaker 3: the world this is one of them. This is one
- 7:55Speaker 3: of the all time, Like wow, okay.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't see that. Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Mike Mick TRICOLMB wrote a really nice column for Philly Voice,
- 8:03Speaker 2: and he articulated something in the column that is so
- 8:05Speaker 2: true And what makes the situation so unique is that
- 8:09Speaker 2: I don't know how many other cities who have, you know, passionate,
- 8:13Speaker 2: rabid football fans can identify who their offensive line coach
- 8:17Speaker 2: is as much as Philadelphians can, and connect with their
- 8:20Speaker 2: offensive line coach as much as Philadelphians have with Stealin.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And I think it was very intentional that when Stealin
- 8:26Speaker 2: did his personal social media announcement, he really just talked
- 8:32Speaker 2: about Philadelphia fans and how much he loved coaching for
- 8:37Speaker 2: them and how much they drove him to be as
- 8:41Speaker 2: good of a coach as he was, and then coaches
- 8:43Speaker 2: players that way. I mean, it is you I can't
- 8:46Speaker 2: imagine maybe like you know, if you lived in the
- 8:48Speaker 2: in the Patriot in Boston area for that early Brady run,
- 8:52Speaker 2: Like maybe they knew Dante Scarnekia a lot, and maybe
- 8:55Speaker 2: maybe he's one guy that can be picked out of
- 8:57Speaker 2: a lineup in Boston. But I mean, it's just so
- 9:00Speaker 2: oh unique and so rare and really cool from that regard.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But I said this, Adam, you're probably a way when
- 9:09Speaker 2: I did my Super Bowl preview, you know, I do
- 9:11Speaker 2: the weekend.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Preview every week.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I did one for Super Bowl, and I had a
- 9:14Speaker 2: lot of time to think about it. And if you
- 9:16Speaker 2: really look at the history of the NFL with guys
- 9:19Speaker 2: who are very successful for a long time in one place,
- 9:22Speaker 2: there are countless stories of what you might say is
- 9:26Speaker 2: like an ugly ending, a messy however you want to
- 9:29Speaker 2: put it. I mean as recently as Belichick and Brady
- 9:33Speaker 2: and Robert Craft in New England, you can go through
- 9:35Speaker 2: both Brett Farv and Aaron Rodgers did not leave Green
- 9:38Speaker 2: Bay on the best terms. Joe Montana did not leave
- 9:41Speaker 2: the forty nine ers. They wanted to go to Steve Young.
- 9:43Speaker 2: He was right that traded him. I mean, it is
- 9:46Speaker 2: really hard when you have you're asking the same question
- 9:50Speaker 2: I am what led to this but you know, when
- 9:52Speaker 2: you have done it one way for so long and succeeded,
- 9:56Speaker 2: and all of a sudden things don't go the right
- 9:59Speaker 2: way and then maybe people want to switching up, that's
- 10:01Speaker 2: when that's when egos can get involved, you know, like,
- 10:04Speaker 2: and I'm not saying this happen. I'm just saying, like,
- 10:06Speaker 2: this is the nature of the NFL. When you are
- 10:08Speaker 2: that successful for that long and sometimes things come to
- 10:11Speaker 2: a head hafter change. It gets a little ugly at
- 10:14Speaker 2: the end. But in my mind, I'll say this, I
- 10:17Speaker 2: don't doubt that ten years from now, Stoutland and the
- 10:20Speaker 2: Eagles organization will be on better terms. I even ran
- 10:24Speaker 2: this around few people and they agree with me, like
- 10:25Speaker 2: that time heals wounds and things will.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Will straighten himself out.
- 10:30Speaker 2: People tend to realize that, yes, looking back on it,
- 10:33Speaker 2: some things needed to change, or we could have done
- 10:35Speaker 2: these things differently. All that that stuff will factor in.
- 10:38Speaker 2: You know, Tom Cloughlin, he'll have done really bad terms
- 10:40Speaker 2: for me. Yes, the Eagles coaching job right right, Like
- 10:44Speaker 2: it's I don't want to say it's it's a it's
- 10:46Speaker 2: an I don't want to call it a definite like
- 10:48Speaker 2: nature definitive thing. But it is a nature of this
- 10:51Speaker 2: business with high ego, high success, high stakes, high pressure,
- 10:56Speaker 2: for that to occasionally lead to some boiling over or
- 10:59Speaker 2: some disagree mints or or an ending the way we're
- 11:01Speaker 2: seeing it.
- 11:02Speaker 3: The great point about Coughlin, because yeah, he was fired.
- 11:04Speaker 3: He interviewed for the job twenty sixteen, not twenty thirteen.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Twenty sixteen they hired Peterson. Yeah, it's it's a that's
- 11:12Speaker 3: a that's another show to talk about some of the
- 11:14Speaker 3: crazy coaching situations for this team. But think about it, right,
- 11:19Speaker 3: this is this is this is pretty interesting. So if
- 11:23Speaker 3: you look at the most important coaches for the Eagles
- 11:26Speaker 3: in the history of their franchise, from my assistance, two
- 11:29Speaker 3: of them were on Sirianni's staff. Jim Johnson obviously the
- 11:34Speaker 3: it's right up there, but it's the other two or
- 11:36Speaker 3: Fangio and Stalin.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Mm hmkay.
- 11:39Speaker 3: That's to have two Hall of Fame coaches on your staff.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Not to take anything away from from Sirianni, but I mean,
- 11:46Speaker 3: that's it's pretty amazing. Like that's you give how he
- 11:49Speaker 3: credit too for that. Yeah, this is why they win.
- 11:52Speaker 3: This is why after twenty twenty, which is an absolute disaster,
- 11:57Speaker 3: they're able to turn this thing around quickly. I mean
- 11:59Speaker 3: having her stout obviously and bringing in Fangio in twenty
- 12:04Speaker 3: four they want a super Bowl. It's and then Buck
- 12:06Speaker 3: Carson was not Buck Carson Lateton.
- 12:08Speaker 1: His career came here.
- 12:09Speaker 3: He was great for the time he was here. But
- 12:12Speaker 3: we're talking about guys who are that they won with,
- 12:16Speaker 3: which they went far with and uh and the other
- 12:18Speaker 3: part about this they're going to just the number one
- 12:20Speaker 3: they're going to miss out is player development. I don't
- 12:23Speaker 3: know of a coach they've had. You tell me, you've
- 12:25Speaker 3: covered the team for a couple of decades, who's developed
- 12:28Speaker 3: players better than this guy?
- 12:30Speaker 1: No.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I mean I thought Jan Castillo was really good at
- 12:33Speaker 2: it when he was up the white coach, but I
- 12:34Speaker 2: feel like Jeff Saltlin took it to an entirely new level.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if there's any any position
- 12:40Speaker 2: that where you've developed guys who've never even played the
- 12:42Speaker 2: sport before, like Jordan Malatta, right, or you take a
- 12:45Speaker 2: guy who is and move his position all together, like
- 12:49Speaker 2: Makai Beckton. Any flourish is there. Well with florish is
- 12:52Speaker 2: is a relative term. But he played well enough to
- 12:54Speaker 2: be a starter on a super Bowl team and then
- 12:57Speaker 2: you know, get a decent deal in free agency.
- 12:58Speaker 1: But the point is, yeah, the.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Harmony, the way he made it all work. But they're
- 13:04Speaker 2: to your point, to take it to another level. They
- 13:07Speaker 2: are changing. Their scheme is going to change. They're gonna
- 13:10Speaker 2: do things differently. And even though I did make the
- 13:12Speaker 2: point that the Shanahan slash McVeigh tree is known for
- 13:16Speaker 2: having big offensive lines that aren't really great, but big
- 13:20Speaker 2: enough to be able to run the ball.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I don't.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I don't see, and I'm very I'm curious to see
- 13:24Speaker 2: how this thing goes forward. I think Eagles have a
- 13:26Speaker 2: long standing philosophy of building in the trenches and investing.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Change that No, but oh no, it's Hollie Will Now
- 13:35Speaker 3: that's that's ingrained. I mean, they're they're gonna always be
- 13:37Speaker 3: strong the lines that will never change. But it's from
- 13:41Speaker 3: and we'll talk to Greco Sail about it this offseason
- 13:44Speaker 3: some line coaches that we know. But schematically, because vertical
- 13:49Speaker 3: SATs versus horizontal and all that stuff, there's a lot
- 13:52Speaker 3: of changes here. It's how comforable these guys gonna be.
- 13:56Speaker 3: And then we obviously the hearts factor yep, in terms
- 13:59Speaker 3: of of what and the yes, the scheme will change, Okay,
- 14:04Speaker 3: that's obvious. Philosophy is going to change lots. It's gonna
- 14:07Speaker 3: start with the run game, though, which is that's the
- 14:09Speaker 3: phlosphy that will change, will stay, but a lot on
- 14:14Speaker 3: how they approach it is going to change. But you
- 14:17Speaker 3: also want to make hearts comfortable. Any offensive coordinator is
- 14:20Speaker 3: going to say, okay, we want to keep these things
- 14:22Speaker 3: you're comfortable with, but everything else is changing, right and
- 14:24Speaker 3: how many what percentage or phase do they keep? Who
- 14:28Speaker 3: the hell knows. There's no way to know that. But
- 14:30Speaker 3: it's going to be interesting, not only with all these
- 14:32Speaker 3: coaching changes and offense it's gonna look different now now
- 14:36Speaker 3: I know people will bring up d in the regular season. Okay,
- 14:39Speaker 3: they wanted you said they were going to do this,
- 14:41Speaker 3: but they're not. We don't control that. It's whatever. It's
- 14:45Speaker 3: it's a combination of Okay, the new OC manion. It's
- 14:49Speaker 3: clearly giving a lot of autonomy here. But that's that
- 14:52Speaker 3: sounds great. But we know what Kellen Moore was able
- 14:55Speaker 3: to do, wanted to do, and he wound up doing
- 14:58Speaker 3: it not very much, we'll see, but the upside for
- 15:01Speaker 3: this thing. It could be really, really fascinating.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it absolutely could be.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And they obviously you know they're changing things not only
- 15:09Speaker 2: by who they brought in, but from offensive coordinator and
- 15:12Speaker 2: of course pass game coordinator.
- 15:14Speaker 1: But immediately the day after the Stoutland.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Announcement came out, they hired Ryan mhaffey from the Packers,
- 15:19Speaker 2: who'd been an assistant with them. He is the tight
- 15:21Speaker 2: ends coach slash run game coordinator. Interestingly, he's never coached
- 15:26Speaker 2: tight ends before. I don't think that's as much of
- 15:27Speaker 2: an issue, but he is the run game designer. So
- 15:32Speaker 2: to me, you read the tea leaves right, you're bringing
- 15:34Speaker 2: in someone from that you're comfortable with, who has coached
- 15:37Speaker 2: under Matt Lafleur.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I believe he's only coached on it. I have to
- 15:40Speaker 1: go back and check. But for the NFL, he's a
- 15:42Speaker 1: Laflora guy. So if you're starting to put.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Pieces together, you're probably and it makes sense gonna see
- 15:47Speaker 2: Mannion be more laflourished than say Shannon Haanry mcveihish, I
- 15:52Speaker 2: would think, just because that's where he comes from and
- 15:54Speaker 2: was his direct coaching experiences from.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Yeah, and understand, we've talked about this from nine years
- 16:00Speaker 3: the disciple like, now, of course there's there's coaching trees
- 16:03Speaker 3: and all that, and yep, you don't ever run that.
- 16:06Speaker 3: My point is you just don't run. It's the same
- 16:07Speaker 3: way you just don't I mean, and Mannion will take
- 16:11Speaker 3: what you learned from McVeigh. And the floor was an
- 16:15Speaker 3: off oc for McVeigh. But then of course he's got
- 16:17Speaker 3: the Shadahan stuff. So it's fascinating. Nobody knows about how
- 16:20Speaker 3: much percentage they're gonna run of each whatever it is,
- 16:23Speaker 3: but it's if it's mostly McVeigh, great whatever. But as
- 16:28Speaker 3: we said earlier recent shows, McVeigh changed something he did
- 16:31Speaker 3: some things with with thirteen personnel or like are you
- 16:35Speaker 3: kidding tight ends? Where the hell does this come from?
- 16:38Speaker 1: No fullback full back, he's not a light Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 3: McVay doesn't use the fullback right where Shure in the
- 16:42Speaker 3: hand does right. But it's that's the beauty. I'm I'm
- 16:47Speaker 3: very intrigued as most people are about what this could
- 16:49Speaker 3: look like mm hmm and the upside, but it's your
- 16:53Speaker 3: quarterback's got to be on board, feel comfortable with it,
- 16:55Speaker 3: and they're very young. Oh. One thing I do want
- 16:58Speaker 3: to add, a lot of people book with are very
- 17:00Speaker 3: encouraged with how young thegals are going to be with
- 17:02Speaker 3: the coaching staff.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Really Yeah, very encouraged by that.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Okay, because new ideas young guys who have not been
- 17:12Speaker 3: when you get when you have an older staff, they're
- 17:14Speaker 3: they're generally not always, but they're generally less open to
- 17:18Speaker 3: new things and changing. I'm not referring to Stout, I'm
- 17:20Speaker 3: just saying overall any any coaches. It could be either
- 17:23Speaker 3: side of the football, and when you have young guys,
- 17:27Speaker 3: you you know, you like to see them growing and
- 17:29Speaker 3: work together. On Jay Gruden's staff, whatever it was with
- 17:32Speaker 3: the staff that had Kyle Shanahan McVeigh and all the
- 17:35Speaker 3: young guys with Washington forget which I know those guys
- 17:39Speaker 3: were on the same staff, but there were other young
- 17:41Speaker 3: guys on it. I think Matt Lafloor might have been.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I have to look it up. Was Matt Lafloor on
- 17:44Speaker 3: that staff?
- 17:46Speaker 1: On Wild I'm watching?
- 17:48Speaker 3: He was, Yes, Yes, I mean it's crazy, it's just
- 17:52Speaker 3: that's really cool like that.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Yeah, let's see.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Now, I still believe that they have to get a
- 17:59Speaker 3: senior offensive system. You really want to have an older guy,
- 18:02Speaker 3: like Fansky told me when he brought in Kevin Rodgers,
- 18:05Speaker 3: and Kevin then was thirty six or thirty seven when
- 18:10Speaker 3: he became the Browns head coach, and he felt he
- 18:13Speaker 3: needed that guy just to run stuff by. Just have
- 18:16Speaker 3: a senior, older guy who's older than him. Put it
- 18:19Speaker 3: that way, that he could run stuff by. It's good
- 18:21Speaker 3: to be able to have an older guy, a little
- 18:24Speaker 3: bit older, that you know and you trust and you
- 18:26Speaker 3: could run stuff by.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Yep. Absolutely.
- 18:29Speaker 2: By the way, when Lafleur was in Washington, he was
- 18:31Speaker 2: on a staff under Mike Shanahan, right with Kyle Shanahan,
- 18:34Speaker 2: Sean McVeigh, Mike McDaniel, and Raheem Morris.
- 18:38Speaker 1: How about that?
- 18:39Speaker 3: Wow, Raheem. But but also I know McVeigh also was
- 18:42Speaker 3: under John I mean not John, yeah, brother.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yes, because because when Mike Shannon got fired, they hired
- 18:49Speaker 2: Jay Gruden, and then Gruden Jay elevated McVeigh to his
- 18:55Speaker 2: offensive coordinator.
- 18:56Speaker 3: He did. And there's the kind of a running joke.
- 18:59Speaker 3: It's it's it's everyone is looking for the next McVeigh
- 19:02Speaker 3: because of Gruden, because Grudden propped him up by Jay.
- 19:05Speaker 3: But yeah, it's it's it's never dull moment usually with
- 19:09Speaker 3: the Eagles. For whoever reason, this one is fascinating.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Absolutely, So you made a great point that Eagles really
- 19:14Speaker 2: do need to figure out their next O line coach
- 19:17Speaker 2: and how they're going to continue to develop O line talent.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Have to think that that's coming soon.
- 19:21Speaker 2: And you know, I think we've alluded to the fact
- 19:23Speaker 2: that we expect other changes on the offensive staff as well.
- 19:27Speaker 1: That will be the next you know, week or two.
- 19:30Speaker 1: You got to get this stuff pretty much done before
- 19:32Speaker 1: the combine. Obviously, Well you.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Think the only one, Gunter Brewer, was hired after the combine.
- 19:39Speaker 3: I believe that one.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Year is that because Mike grow was the offensive coordinator though.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Well grow grow high, Grow brought him in, he found.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Him right, but at least without him you had an
- 19:49Speaker 2: offensive coordinator who was a wide receivers coach.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Yes, it's true, but they still need a receivers coach
- 19:54Speaker 3: so he doesn't have to worry about that stuff.
- 19:55Speaker 1: So true, But yeah, it.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Yeah, they've got uh yeah, I mean again, almost not
- 20:03Speaker 3: all of them, but I mean it's majority of the
- 20:05Speaker 3: coaches aren't aren't back for whether share and wanted did
- 20:09Speaker 3: didn't want them back, wanted whatever the case may be.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And obviously Many has got to bring in his own guys,
- 20:13Speaker 3: which he is and I'm looking forward to this, but
- 20:16Speaker 3: it's you just don't know. The guy's never called plays.
- 20:19Speaker 3: This is only thirty year coaching. There's there's a lot
- 20:21Speaker 3: to be desired here. But Washington's doing the same thing
- 20:23Speaker 3: with David blau Sop from Manning the least coached a
- 20:26Speaker 3: position for one year where Blow has not been. Heeds
- 20:29Speaker 3: never run a room on his own, right.
- 20:31Speaker 2: That's gonna be a little fascinating throughout the course of
- 20:34Speaker 2: next season kind of look at how how Blow and
- 20:37Speaker 2: Mannion are doing considering their lack of coaching experience and
- 20:40Speaker 2: how they're promoted to that position and how they do.
- 20:43Speaker 2: I mean, both head coaches are putting a lot of
- 20:44Speaker 2: faith in these two inexperienced guys, but they're aren't doing
- 20:47Speaker 2: it because they really saw something. So it'll be interesting
- 20:50Speaker 2: to see how that works. Plus the Giants, who did they.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Have Did they hire their offensive coordinator yet? I don't
- 20:55Speaker 1: even remember?
- 20:57Speaker 3: H yes, Uh, they hired Mike Matt Naggie.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Oh, that's right, And so that'll be also interesting too
- 21:07Speaker 2: write because you know he interviewed for the Eagles job,
- 21:10Speaker 2: and he would have been the opposite. He would have
- 21:12Speaker 2: been like the experienced veteran play caller re tread head coach.
- 21:17Speaker 2: So it'll it's gonna just be a fun comparison.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely anything else. Let's talk about the offensive line itself.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Where you are out in the Bay Area, do you
- 21:27Speaker 2: hear anything on the status of any guys where there's
- 21:29Speaker 2: Lane Land and anything like that.
- 21:31Speaker 3: I know the Dickerson stuff's out there, It's definitely true.
- 21:35Speaker 3: There's a couple of different reports. I this is my
- 21:40Speaker 3: feeling on it. It's very rare for a guy of
- 21:43Speaker 3: his statue to retire twenty seven. It's just not I mean,
- 21:47Speaker 3: it just rarely happens. That's why it would be surprised
- 21:49Speaker 3: to me. But what I've known, what you've known, what
- 21:52Speaker 3: many people know, is landin with so many surgeries, you know,
- 21:59Speaker 3: and and it's really hard. It's just really hard. You
- 22:03Speaker 3: don't you don't know about ANYONEU till you walk in
- 22:05Speaker 3: the shoes. You don't know what they're dealing with. The pain.
- 22:09Speaker 3: It's you feel for this guy, the fact that he's
- 22:11Speaker 3: thinking about it is lucky. We wish him well, man.
- 22:14Speaker 3: It's uh it's kind of scary, man. It's it's Greg Greg.
- 22:17Speaker 3: It was before the story broke that got out there.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Cosell was taping Who's doing our We were doing the
- 22:22Speaker 3: show with Mike Gill and Greg said he wanted he
- 22:24Speaker 3: worried about him, but when he retired, he had he
- 22:27Speaker 3: didn't know this was going to happen because Greg watched him,
- 22:29Speaker 3: and you know, we talked about during the season that
- 22:32Speaker 3: landon when the however you are, the more pressure you
- 22:35Speaker 3: put on your joints, and with with so many knee surgeries,
- 22:39Speaker 3: and he had the ankle, I believe he might have
- 22:42Speaker 3: had the tight rope was a tight rope and call yeah,
- 22:45Speaker 3: which is the the surgery du jour for the ankle
- 22:49Speaker 3: to get the guy back sooner to get players the
- 22:51Speaker 3: tool had it. But anyway, it's scary, man. I I
- 22:54Speaker 3: feel for the guy that and then you got the
- 22:56Speaker 3: land situation. Then you add that with Lane and with
- 23:01Speaker 3: Lane Johnson and Lane Dickerson, then the stout he's not
- 23:04Speaker 3: coaching here anymore.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Mm hm.
- 23:06Speaker 3: That's heavy, man. It's it's it's hard to know which.
- 23:10Speaker 3: I don't know Dickerson. I don't know what he's thinking.
- 23:12Speaker 3: But the fact that for all this stuff out there
- 23:15Speaker 3: that we just talked about, it's a pretty significant situation.
- 23:19Speaker 3: And our thought thought was coming into this a couple
- 23:22Speaker 3: of weeks ago, that they're gonna have to dress the
- 23:24Speaker 3: offensive line in pretty significant way. Lane's replacement a really
- 23:28Speaker 3: good swing guard center because they don't know about Kendall yet.
- 23:33Speaker 3: They just don't know. And now it's not only that,
- 23:36Speaker 3: I mean, even if Dickerson's playing with his injury history,
- 23:41Speaker 3: and I give the guy credit the fact that he
- 23:43Speaker 3: just he plays, I mean just to be able to play,
- 23:48Speaker 3: just suit up and play just about every week. Yeah,
- 23:51Speaker 3: remember in the minus because he hit the trim right
- 23:54Speaker 3: right for the season.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Two, he had two surgeries in the since the Super
- 23:58Speaker 2: Bowl before the start.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Of this Yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 3: One one run right hugging up to the season on
- 24:02Speaker 3: one after the super Bowl. It's it's, uh, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 3: jargons from what I understand, feeling pretty good. M He's
- 24:10Speaker 3: got to play better. We know that. But to have
- 24:13Speaker 3: one off season where he's not rehabbing something, and you know,
- 24:17Speaker 3: you talk to people about back surgery, it takes almost
- 24:19Speaker 3: two years.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Sometimes they feel, right, Hey, it's that time of the
- 24:22Speaker 4: year that everyone's trying to clean up their habits and

- 27:43Speaker 2: that's good that if he's feeling good, it's good that
- 27:45Speaker 2: to have the entire offseason he'll be one to watch
- 27:48Speaker 2: in OTAs and we'll be able to see if he's
- 27:50Speaker 2: because even in Otia's last year he was not dead.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I don't think he did everything. He was there, but
- 27:55Speaker 1: he was standing on.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Their spot practicing him. It's uh, it's a tough deal, man.
- 28:04Speaker 3: It's the Super Bowl hangover part. There's never one thing
- 28:08Speaker 3: over it. But and we didn't know this, you know.
- 28:12Speaker 3: The only thing is we knew know SMI was gonna
- 28:14Speaker 3: have surgery. He had to because he toursed trisaps, right,
- 28:17Speaker 3: BG obviously had his thing. But man, overall, part of
- 28:20Speaker 3: it is you got to talk about injuries. That's a
- 28:22Speaker 3: big factor.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Uh, anything else we got to hit
- 28:29Speaker 2: here before we I think that's pretty much. Listen, it's
- 28:31Speaker 2: gonna be a lot of changes to this offense. I mean,
- 28:33Speaker 2: we don't you got a Brown, Dallas gotter you got.
- 28:36Speaker 1: We'll get to that.
- 28:37Speaker 3: We'll get to another show. But we'll also once the
- 28:40Speaker 3: coaching staff is finalized, we'll have breakdowns on each way
- 28:42Speaker 3: of intelling all of them. So we we uh half
- 28:44Speaker 3: you guys really interesting. Yeah, we'll talk about another show.
- 28:47Speaker 3: But uh, he is he's three or four years older
- 28:50Speaker 3: than his boss. Manion. But overall, yeah, it with change
- 28:55Speaker 3: comes opportunity and sometimes excitement. Who knows, We'll see how
- 28:59Speaker 3: they play in the regular season. We'll get there when
- 29:01Speaker 3: we get there. But I'm interested to see what this
- 29:04Speaker 3: thing looks like.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I'm glad you said that the whole
- 29:07Speaker 2: change comes because we'll ended on this. I think that
- 29:10Speaker 2: it was a shock to the solar plexus for the
- 29:12Speaker 2: whole Della or Valley, the way the stylin thing went down.
- 29:15Speaker 2: But I also heard this sentiment and I agree with it,
- 29:17Speaker 2: is that you can't want.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Change and then be upset when change happens.
- 29:23Speaker 2: You can be upset with how it happens or what
- 29:25Speaker 2: led to it, but the bottom line is this scheme
- 29:29Speaker 2: is going to look different, and it was time for
- 29:31Speaker 2: the people who were familiar with it and know it
- 29:34Speaker 2: to coach it and run it. So that part. I
- 29:37Speaker 2: don't think you can be disappointed about or criticize the
- 29:41Speaker 2: organization for you know, the messiness fine, but the actual
- 29:47Speaker 2: bringing in of new coaches.
- 29:48Speaker 1: We're going to do new things.
- 29:49Speaker 2: That's what everybody, including you and I, I mean, we
- 29:52Speaker 2: screamed it from the mountaintop. So this was the worst
- 29:54Speaker 2: scheme in the NFL offensively and I'm not even sure
- 29:58Speaker 2: it was close.
- 29:59Speaker 1: And now you're getting radical change that it needed. So
- 30:02Speaker 1: what happens from here we'll find out. Yeah, great with
- 30:07Speaker 1: great stuff again.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I hope every enjoyed their Super Bowl Sunday, and then
- 30:10Speaker 2: we go right into.
- 30:12Speaker 1: The NFL offseason.
- 30:13Speaker 2: That's going to do it for this episode of Inside
- 30:15Speaker 2: the Birds, the leading podcast in Eagles Intel, and as always,
- 30:19Speaker 2: we thank you for flying with us Inside Umbirds.
