- 1:00:07Back again for
- 1:00:08another episode
- 1:00:09of the How to
- 1:00:09Protect the Ocean
- 1:00:10podcast.
- 1:00:11I'm trying out
- 1:00:12again two weeks
- 1:00:13in a row,
- 1:00:14recording it
- 1:00:15before I go live,
- 1:00:16trying out this
- 1:00:16live Ecamm
- 1:00:17software.
- 1:00:18But bringing you
- 1:00:19content a little
- 1:00:20longer of a
- 1:00:21show today,
- 1:00:22we're going to be
- 1:00:23talking about
- 1:00:23ocean
- 1:00:24conservation
- 1:00:24stories,
- 1:00:25about orcas.
- 1:00:26We're going to be talking about
- 1:00:27what not to do
- 1:00:28with the shark by
- 1:00:29looking at a
- 1:00:29TikTok video that
- 1:00:30I found.
- 1:00:31And of course,
- 1:00:31we're going to be
- 1:00:32talking about the
- 1:00:32new movie by
- 1:00:33David
- 1:00:34Attenborough or
- 1:00:35starring David
- 1:00:36Attenborough
- 1:00:36called Ocean.
- 1:00:38Haven't seen the
- 1:00:38movie yet, but I
- 1:00:39want to cover
- 1:00:39some of the
- 1:00:40aspects of it,
- 1:00:41especially
- 1:00:41there's a
- 1:00:42trawling scene
- 1:00:42that I think
- 1:00:43people are a
- 1:00:44little
- 1:00:44surprised up.
- 1:00:45But it's going to
- 1:00:45be interesting to
- 1:00:46go over that.
- 1:00:47So let's start
- 1:00:48the show.
- 1:00:51What's up
- 1:00:51everybody?
- 1:00:52Welcome back to
- 1:00:53another exciting
- 1:00:53episode of the
- 1:00:54How to Protect
- 1:00:55the Ocean
- 1:00:55podcast.
- 1:00:55I am your host,
- 1:00:56Andrew Lewin.
- 1:00:57This is the
- 1:00:57podcast where you
- 1:00:57find out what's
- 1:00:58happening with
- 1:00:59the ocean, how
- 1:00:59you can speak up
- 1:01:00for the ocean,
- 1:01:01and what you can
- 1:01:01do to live for a
- 1:01:03better ocean by
- 1:01:04taking action.
- 1:01:05On today's
- 1:01:06episode, we're
- 1:01:06going to be
- 1:01:06talking about a
- 1:01:08lot of different
- 1:01:08things going on.
- 1:01:09Three different
- 1:01:10stories.
- 1:01:10We're going to be
- 1:01:11talking about
- 1:01:11David
- 1:01:11Attenborough
- 1:01:12finishing off the
- 1:01:12episode with David
- 1:01:13Attenborough.
- 1:01:13We talk about
- 1:01:13what not to do
- 1:01:14with the shark by
- 1:01:15looking at a
- 1:01:15TikTok video.
- 1:01:16You can do more
- 1:01:16of those
- 1:01:17reaction videos.
- 1:01:17You guys find a
- 1:01:18lot of TikToks
- 1:01:18that are just
- 1:01:19like, it's a little
- 1:01:20weird to do.
- 1:01:21You know, I don't
- 1:01:21know what people
- 1:01:21are
- 1:01:22thinking about.
- 1:01:22And then of
- 1:01:23course, we're
- 1:01:23going to be
- 1:01:23talking starting
- 1:01:24off with, you
- 1:01:26know, an ocean
- 1:01:27conservation
- 1:01:27story.
- 1:01:28Here's the thing.
- 1:01:29I did an episode
- 1:01:30last episode
- 1:01:32about
- 1:01:32conservation
- 1:01:34stories,
- 1:01:35especially near
- 1:01:35shore
- 1:01:36conservation
- 1:01:36stories
- 1:01:36and identifying
- 1:01:37heroes that are
- 1:01:39conservation
- 1:01:40heroes.
- 1:01:40People who are
- 1:01:41leading the
- 1:01:42charge for
- 1:01:43conservation
- 1:01:43along the near
- 1:01:44shore, along the
- 1:01:45coastline.
- 1:01:46Angela
- 1:01:46Villagomez, Alia
- 1:01:49Haidyat, or from
- 1:01:50the center of
- 1:01:51ocean progress,
- 1:01:52or from the
- 1:01:53center of
- 1:01:53American
- 1:01:53progress, sorry,
- 1:01:54talking about
- 1:01:55ocean
- 1:01:55conservation,
- 1:01:57going from area
- 1:01:58based offshore
- 1:01:59conservation to
- 1:02:00near shore
- 1:02:01conservation.
- 1:02:02Something that
- 1:02:02kind of surprises
- 1:02:03a lot of people,
- 1:02:04but also is so
- 1:02:05near and dear to
- 1:02:06our hearts.
- 1:02:07Because as I said
- 1:02:08in the episode,
- 1:02:08when you look out
- 1:02:09from the
- 1:02:10coastline,
- 1:02:10whether you're on
- 1:02:10a lake or river,
- 1:02:11when you're on
- 1:02:13the coastline of
- 1:02:13an ocean,
- 1:02:14you look out into
- 1:02:14the water.
- 1:02:15You want to see
- 1:02:15clean water.
- 1:02:17You want to see
- 1:02:17maybe some
- 1:02:17wildlife
- 1:02:17out there.
- 1:02:18You want to see
- 1:02:19some waves.
- 1:02:19You want to see
- 1:02:20some habitats,
- 1:02:21maybe some
- 1:02:21seagrass, maybe a
- 1:02:22coral reef or
- 1:02:23something.
- 1:02:23But it's always
- 1:02:24fun to see
- 1:02:25something
- 1:02:25healthy.
- 1:02:25You don't want to
- 1:02:26see anything that
- 1:02:27looks green, like
- 1:02:29that's algae
- 1:02:30related or
- 1:02:30that smells,
- 1:02:32or you can smell
- 1:02:33like sometimes
- 1:02:33you can smell
- 1:02:34like diesel,
- 1:02:35gasoline and sea
- 1:02:36oil slicks.
- 1:02:36You don't want to
- 1:02:37see that.
- 1:02:37You want to see
- 1:02:38clean oceans.
- 1:02:39And to do that,
- 1:02:40we need people to
- 1:02:41step up.
- 1:02:42We need to focus
- 1:02:42on a lot of
- 1:02:43ocean heroes.
- 1:02:44We need to focus
- 1:02:44on those
- 1:02:45community leaders
- 1:02:46that want to help
- 1:02:47us save our
- 1:02:48coastlines.
- 1:02:49And so we're
- 1:02:49going to be
- 1:02:50talking about one
- 1:02:52today, one story
- 1:02:53that I want to
- 1:02:54cover in this
- 1:02:55episode.
- 1:02:56Now, this is
- 1:02:57always
- 1:02:57interesting
- 1:02:58because we're
- 1:02:59going to be
- 1:02:59talking about
- 1:03:01something that is
- 1:03:02not necessarily
- 1:03:03an ocean hero as
- 1:03:04an individual.
- 1:03:05I'm going to be
- 1:03:05talking about
- 1:03:05that next
- 1:03:06episode.
- 1:03:07If you catch the
- 1:03:08Mondays episode,
- 1:03:09that will be with
- 1:03:10a local hero in
- 1:03:11the Maldives,
- 1:03:12looking to help
- 1:03:13with plastic
- 1:03:14pollution, single
- 1:03:15use plastic
- 1:03:16pollution and
- 1:03:16what she was
- 1:03:17able to do.
- 1:03:18But today we're
- 1:03:19going to be
- 1:03:19talking about
- 1:03:20orcas in the San
- 1:03:23Juan Islands in
- 1:03:23Washington state.
- 1:03:25We're going to be
- 1:03:25talking about
- 1:03:26something, a
- 1:03:27community B whale
- 1:03:29wise guidelines
- 1:03:30that was led
- 1:03:32by whale watch
- 1:03:33captains,
- 1:03:34naturalists,
- 1:03:35conservationists
- 1:03:36from the San
- 1:03:36Juan County.
- 1:03:38And so we're
- 1:03:38going to be
- 1:03:38talking about
- 1:03:39some of the key
- 1:03:39outcomes and the
- 1:03:40conservation
- 1:03:41targets
- 1:03:41that they talked
- 1:03:42about. So here
- 1:03:43was the problem
- 1:03:43in the early two
- 1:03:44by the early
- 1:03:442000s, the
- 1:03:45southern
- 1:03:45resident whale
- 1:03:47orca population.
- 1:03:49They basically
- 1:03:50were declining in
- 1:03:51population due to
- 1:03:52a lack of food,
- 1:03:53which is
- 1:03:53an examine
- 1:03:54contaminants and
- 1:03:55of course, vessel
- 1:03:56noise
- 1:03:56distribution or
- 1:03:57disturbance.
- 1:03:58Before that, they
- 1:04:00were the target
- 1:04:01of capture in
- 1:04:021970s and they
- 1:04:03just never
- 1:04:03recovered. They
- 1:04:04lost about half
- 1:04:04their population.
- 1:04:05They haven't
- 1:04:06really fully
- 1:04:06recovered from
- 1:04:07that. I think it
- 1:04:07was 60
- 1:04:08individuals.
- 1:04:08So this is a
- 1:04:09little less than
- 1:04:09half their
- 1:04:10population that
- 1:04:10went into
- 1:04:10captivity.
- 1:04:12And since then,
- 1:04:13they've never
- 1:04:13really recovered
- 1:04:13and it's never
- 1:04:15fun to be able to
- 1:04:16have to go
- 1:04:17through that.
- 1:04:18So that's what
- 1:04:19was going
- 1:04:20on in that.
- 1:04:22And we want to
- 1:04:23make sure that
- 1:04:25people know what
- 1:04:27happens to these
- 1:04:27animals, right?
- 1:04:28Down to only
- 1:04:29about 73
- 1:04:30individuals
- 1:04:31by 2024.
- 1:04:32That was the last
- 1:04:32estimate
- 1:04:33that was taken.
- 1:04:34And then, you
- 1:04:35know, they're
- 1:04:35spending less
- 1:04:36time foraging,
- 1:04:37you know, they're
- 1:04:38spending less
- 1:04:39time foraging.
- 1:04:40They're spending
- 1:04:41more time trying
- 1:04:43to just be safe,
- 1:04:46you know, be safe
- 1:04:47and enjoy life.
- 1:04:48And that's
- 1:04:49really hard.
- 1:04:50So spending less
- 1:04:50time foraging
- 1:04:51successfully due
- 1:04:51to boat mascots,
- 1:04:53their eco
- 1:04:54location. They
- 1:04:55are a very
- 1:04:56pod friendly.
- 1:04:58They're very like
- 1:04:58close family knit
- 1:05:00orca population.
- 1:05:02As many of the
- 1:05:03orcas are,
- 1:05:03they communicate.
- 1:05:04They use noise to
- 1:05:05communicate with
- 1:05:05whistles, clicks
- 1:05:07and all
- 1:05:07that stuff.
- 1:05:08And that leads to
- 1:05:09missing feeding
- 1:05:09opportunities and
- 1:05:10miss deleting
- 1:05:11from like dangers
- 1:05:13around like ships
- 1:05:14or anything
- 1:05:14like that.
- 1:05:15So, you know,
- 1:05:15having that noise
- 1:05:17can really affect
- 1:05:18these this
- 1:05:19population. They
- 1:05:20feed together.
- 1:05:21They communicate
- 1:05:21when they feed.
- 1:05:22They communicate
- 1:05:23when they do
- 1:05:23everything and
- 1:05:24not being able to
- 1:05:25communicate
- 1:05:25really
- 1:05:25harms them.
- 1:05:26So not having
- 1:05:28always having
- 1:05:29boat problems or
- 1:05:30boats around them
- 1:05:31that causes noise
- 1:05:32can really
- 1:05:33affect them.
- 1:05:34So let's look at
- 1:05:34the local
- 1:05:35context here.
- 1:05:35Let's look at the
- 1:05:36San Juan Islands
- 1:05:36are a hub for
- 1:05:37whale watching
- 1:05:38tourism actually
- 1:05:38going out to
- 1:05:39Vancouver in a
- 1:05:40little bit
- 1:05:40in a couple of
- 1:05:41weeks, hopefully
- 1:05:42going to do some
- 1:05:43orca whale orca
- 1:05:44watching then.
- 1:05:45This industry
- 1:05:46provides major
- 1:05:47local income but
- 1:05:48poses risks
- 1:05:49through noise
- 1:05:49pollution, too
- 1:05:51close approaches
- 1:05:51and uncoordinated
- 1:05:53boat traffic,
- 1:05:54especially when
- 1:05:54whales are
- 1:05:54present.
- 1:05:55Everybody gets
- 1:05:55excited.
- 1:05:56Everybody wants
- 1:05:56to see the
- 1:05:57whales. If you're
- 1:05:57paying to go on a
- 1:05:58whale watching
- 1:05:59ship, you want to
- 1:06:00see the whales
- 1:06:00when
- 1:06:00they're there.
- 1:06:01If you see orcas,
- 1:06:02I want to see the
- 1:06:02orcas when
- 1:06:02they're there,
- 1:06:03but so are
- 1:06:04other boats.
- 1:06:04So you have to be
- 1:06:05mindful of other
- 1:06:05boats and you
- 1:06:06have to make sure
- 1:06:06that these
- 1:06:07animals are not
- 1:06:08being affected.
- 1:06:09Now, who are the
- 1:06:09local hearers in
- 1:06:10this situation?
- 1:06:11It's not
- 1:06:11necessarily an
- 1:06:12individual. It's
- 1:06:12actually a
- 1:06:12collective of
- 1:06:13whale watching
- 1:06:14operators.
- 1:06:14Naturalists and
- 1:06:15marine educators
- 1:06:16from the San
- 1:06:17Juan Islands
- 1:06:18decided to take
- 1:06:19responsibility
- 1:06:19for the problem
- 1:06:20within their own
- 1:06:21industry. Rather
- 1:06:22than wait for
- 1:06:23government
- 1:06:23mandates,
- 1:06:24they voluntarily
- 1:06:25developed a code
- 1:06:26of conduct. Now,
- 1:06:27waiting for
- 1:06:28government
- 1:06:28regulations
- 1:06:28mandates doesn't
- 1:06:29always happen.
- 1:06:31The wait can be
- 1:06:31very long. It
- 1:06:32could affect the
- 1:06:33whale population.
- 1:06:34So they decided
- 1:06:34to take it upon
- 1:06:35themselves since
- 1:06:35they are leading
- 1:06:36the charge
- 1:06:36anyway. And they
- 1:06:37said, you
- 1:06:37know what?
- 1:06:38We are going to
- 1:06:39put a voluntary
- 1:06:39code of conduct
- 1:06:40that we that
- 1:06:41we're going
- 1:06:42to develop
- 1:06:43together. They
- 1:06:43partnered with
- 1:06:44scientists, local
- 1:06:45governments,
- 1:06:45Parks Canada, NOAA and
- 1:06:47Fisheries and
- 1:06:48Oceans
- 1:06:49Canada, DFO
- 1:06:50for the federal
- 1:06:51government. So
- 1:06:52the key
- 1:06:52individuals of
- 1:06:53this group were
- 1:06:53the San Juan
- 1:06:54County Marine
- 1:06:55Resources
- 1:06:55Committee,
- 1:06:56the MRC,
- 1:06:57the Whale Museum
- 1:06:59from Friday
- 1:06:59Harbor, Sound
- 1:07:00Watch Boater
- 1:07:01Education
- 1:07:02Program, and the
- 1:07:03Pacific Whale
- 1:07:04Watch
- 1:07:04Association,
- 1:07:05the PWWA,
- 1:07:06the members of
- 1:07:06that association.
- 1:07:08So here was the
- 1:07:09conservation
- 1:07:09action. So this
- 1:07:10guideline turned
- 1:07:10into the B
- 1:07:11Whale Wise
- 1:07:12guidelines. So it
- 1:07:13launched in the
- 1:07:13early 2000s and
- 1:07:15continually
- 1:07:15updated based on
- 1:07:17science and
- 1:07:17regulation. The
- 1:07:19campaign
- 1:07:19encourages
- 1:07:20voluntary and
- 1:07:21regulatory best
- 1:07:22practices for all
- 1:07:23vessels around
- 1:07:24whales, including
- 1:07:25staying 400 yards
- 1:07:27away from orcas,
- 1:07:29speed
- 1:07:29restrictions
- 1:07:30within 1,000
- 1:07:31yards, avoiding
- 1:07:32the path of
- 1:07:33whales as much as
- 1:07:34possible,
- 1:07:35turning off fish
- 1:07:36finders and eco
- 1:07:37sounders to
- 1:07:38reduce noise even
- 1:07:39further, using
- 1:07:40whale spotting
- 1:07:41networks to avoid
- 1:07:43accidental
- 1:07:43disturbances. And
- 1:07:45the guidelines
- 1:07:45were promoted
- 1:07:46through onboard
- 1:07:47education by
- 1:07:47naturalists. They
- 1:07:49were they were
- 1:07:50promoted by
- 1:07:51outreach,
- 1:07:52promoted through
- 1:07:53outreach to
- 1:07:54private boaters
- 1:07:55and kayakers and
- 1:07:56partnerships with
- 1:07:57marinas,
- 1:07:57ferry operators
- 1:07:59and dive
- 1:08:00companies. So
- 1:08:00you're probably
- 1:08:01wondering like,
- 1:08:01okay, this is a
- 1:08:02lot of action and
- 1:08:03it worked.
- 1:08:04Why did it work?
- 1:08:04Because there was
- 1:08:05industry
- 1:08:05leadership,
- 1:08:06right? Always the
- 1:08:07industry always
- 1:08:07has to help and
- 1:08:08make sure that
- 1:08:09things are good.
- 1:08:11Whale watching
- 1:08:11companies led the
- 1:08:12charge, reducing
- 1:08:13opposition and
- 1:08:15building
- 1:08:15credibility,
- 1:08:17community
- 1:08:17engagement, the
- 1:08:18local pride in
- 1:08:19the whales and
- 1:08:20marine ecosystems
- 1:08:21fostered
- 1:08:22cooperation from
- 1:08:23boats and
- 1:08:23residences. If
- 1:08:24you've ever seen
- 1:08:24videos when
- 1:08:26orcas are found
- 1:08:27in an area,
- 1:08:29you'll see a lot
- 1:08:30of people that
- 1:08:30are just posting
- 1:08:31it and they're
- 1:08:31actually going to
- 1:08:32see it. They're
- 1:08:33taking time off
- 1:08:33of work.
- 1:08:34They're going out
- 1:08:35of their way,
- 1:08:35driving miles and
- 1:08:37kilometers to see
- 1:08:38these orcas. And
- 1:08:39when they do,
- 1:08:40they get
- 1:08:41emotional. There
- 1:08:41is a huge
- 1:08:43pride in the
- 1:08:44local community
- 1:08:45to not only
- 1:08:46protecting
- 1:08:46these orcas,
- 1:08:47but also making
- 1:08:48sure that they
- 1:08:49get to see them
- 1:08:50as much as
- 1:08:50possible and get
- 1:08:51to know them as
- 1:08:52much as possible.
- 1:08:52If you saw the
- 1:08:53interview I did
- 1:08:54with Mark Laron
- 1:08:55Young, you can
- 1:08:56see how emotional
- 1:08:57he got when he
- 1:08:58talked about
- 1:08:59these orcas and
- 1:09:00just their
- 1:09:01characteristics
- 1:09:02and what they've
- 1:09:02been able to do
- 1:09:03in front of
- 1:09:04people and how
- 1:09:04people have been
- 1:09:05able to catch
- 1:09:05them doing some
- 1:09:06pretty amazing
- 1:09:06things. So
- 1:09:07something to
- 1:09:08check out.
- 1:09:09They've also had,
- 1:09:10were
- 1:09:10science-based.
- 1:09:11That's why it
- 1:09:12worked, these
- 1:09:12guidelines. The
- 1:09:12guidelines were
- 1:09:13rooted in
- 1:09:13acoustic and
- 1:09:14behavioral
- 1:09:14research
- 1:09:14on orcas.
- 1:09:16And then there's
- 1:09:16a cross-border
- 1:09:17coordination. You
- 1:09:18heard me say that
- 1:09:19there's fisheries
- 1:09:20notions Canada
- 1:09:21was involved.
- 1:09:21NOAA was
- 1:09:22involved. Parks
- 1:09:22Canada was
- 1:09:23involved.
- 1:09:24So since the
- 1:09:24Salish Sea spans
- 1:09:25the US and
- 1:09:26Canadian waters,
- 1:09:30collaboration was
- 1:09:32key. So B Whale
- 1:09:33Wise became a
- 1:09:34bi-national
- 1:09:35initiative.
- 1:09:35That's a huge
- 1:09:36thing. That takes
- 1:09:36a long time to
- 1:09:37put together.
- 1:09:38And being able to
- 1:09:39put that together
- 1:09:39was really great
- 1:09:40for this. So the
- 1:09:41success is the
- 1:09:42SoundWatch
- 1:09:43program
- 1:09:43documented,
- 1:09:44reduce close
- 1:09:44approaches and
- 1:09:45increase
- 1:09:46compliance
- 1:09:47by commercial
- 1:09:47operators over
- 1:09:48the last 20
- 1:09:49years. The
- 1:09:49initiative helped
- 1:09:50influence the US
- 1:09:51federal and Washington state
- 1:09:52legislation,
- 1:09:53including
- 1:09:54a mandatory
- 1:09:54400-yard buffer
- 1:09:55zones for boats
- 1:09:57and orcas in 2021
- 1:09:59and temporary
- 1:10:00closures of whale
- 1:10:01foraging
- 1:10:02areas during
- 1:10:03these times.
- 1:10:04Canada adopted
- 1:10:05similar laws for
- 1:10:06vessel distance
- 1:10:06and speed zones
- 1:10:07in British
- 1:10:08Columbian
- 1:10:08waters and
- 1:10:10tourists were
- 1:10:11educated on board
- 1:10:11amplifying
- 1:10:12conservation
- 1:10:12messaging far
- 1:10:14beyond
- 1:10:14the region.
- 1:10:15This is a huge
- 1:10:17conservation
- 1:10:17success. There's
- 1:10:18only a certain
- 1:10:18amount of things
- 1:10:19you can do to
- 1:10:20help this
- 1:10:20population.
- 1:10:22And this is what
- 1:10:22they did. And it
- 1:10:23was industry led.
- 1:10:24It was science
- 1:10:25based. It was
- 1:10:26adopted.
- 1:10:27And then a lot of
- 1:10:27these measures
- 1:10:28were adopted by
- 1:10:29governments on
- 1:10:29both sides of the
- 1:10:31border. And that
- 1:10:32is cooperation.
- 1:10:33And again,
- 1:10:34industry led. It
- 1:10:34all started off
- 1:10:35with the
- 1:10:35industry. It all
- 1:10:36started off with
- 1:10:36the people. The
- 1:10:38government will
- 1:10:38follow what the
- 1:10:39people do.
- 1:10:39It may take them
- 1:10:40some time, but
- 1:10:41they will follow
- 1:10:41what the people
- 1:10:42want to do.
- 1:10:43Here are some of
- 1:10:44the challenges
- 1:10:44because no
- 1:10:45project is
- 1:10:45perfect. Some of the
- 1:10:46challenges is private
- 1:10:48boater compliance
- 1:10:48remains
- 1:10:49inconsistent,
- 1:10:50especially during
- 1:10:51peak tourism
- 1:10:51months. This is
- 1:10:52going to be a
- 1:10:52long-term
- 1:10:53educational
- 1:10:53process that will
- 1:10:55make sure that
- 1:10:55over the long
- 1:10:57term people will
- 1:10:58not only be
- 1:10:59compliant,
- 1:11:00but also be
- 1:11:01enforced by other
- 1:11:02community
- 1:11:03members. That
- 1:11:03will be
- 1:11:04interesting. And
- 1:11:04enforcement
- 1:11:04resources, speaking
- 1:11:05of which,
- 1:11:06are limited,
- 1:11:07especially across
- 1:11:07a wide marina
- 1:11:09area or marine
- 1:11:10area. So that's
- 1:11:10very difficult.
- 1:11:11But you have
- 1:11:12people in the
- 1:11:12water all the
- 1:11:13time. You have
- 1:11:13people who are
- 1:11:14friends with
- 1:11:14other boaters and
- 1:11:15they make sure
- 1:11:16that they will
- 1:11:17behave over time.
- 1:11:18And as long as
- 1:11:19this continued
- 1:11:19with this
- 1:11:20approach, we'll
- 1:11:21see better
- 1:11:22behavior,
- 1:11:23hopefully
- 1:11:23over time.
- 1:11:24Noise pollution
- 1:11:25from commercial
- 1:11:26shipping and
- 1:11:26ferries remains a
- 1:11:28problem beyond
- 1:11:28whale watching
- 1:11:29industry. Now,
- 1:11:30there have been
- 1:11:30some projects,
- 1:11:32some pilot
- 1:11:32studies really
- 1:11:33that have worked
- 1:11:34with shipping
- 1:11:35industries to
- 1:11:36reduce noise
- 1:11:37within the San
- 1:11:37Juan Islands
- 1:11:38and other places
- 1:11:39like within Puget
- 1:11:40Sound. And so
- 1:11:41that is still
- 1:11:42something that
- 1:11:43needs to be
- 1:11:44determined even
- 1:11:45more. So
- 1:11:46something that we
- 1:11:47want to keep a
- 1:11:48close eye on, we
- 1:11:49want to make sure
- 1:11:49that we are
- 1:11:50working with all
- 1:11:51boaters,
- 1:11:51not just whale
- 1:11:51watching boats,
- 1:11:52but we want to
- 1:11:53work with all
- 1:11:53types of ships to
- 1:11:55make sure
- 1:11:55that we protect
- 1:11:56this very, very
- 1:11:57critically
- 1:11:58endangered
- 1:11:58population. So
- 1:12:00the legacy and
- 1:12:01the next steps
- 1:12:01for this
- 1:12:02conservation
- 1:12:02initiative and
- 1:12:03project, the B
- 1:12:05Whale Wise model
- 1:12:06is now studied as
- 1:12:07a template for
- 1:12:08community-led marine
- 1:12:08stewardship,
- 1:12:09which is great to
- 1:12:10see. The program
- 1:12:11continues to
- 1:12:12evolve with the
- 1:12:14input of
- 1:12:14scientists, indigenous
- 1:12:16nations,
- 1:12:17and the tourism
- 1:12:17sector. And then
- 1:12:19a growing number
- 1:12:19of kayak guides,
- 1:12:20drone
- 1:12:21operators, and
- 1:12:22paddle boarders
- 1:12:23are also being
- 1:12:23brought into this
- 1:12:24fold. And the
- 1:12:26whale warning
- 1:12:27flying system
- 1:12:28introduced more
- 1:12:29recently alerts
- 1:12:30nearby vessels to
- 1:12:32whale presence in
- 1:12:34real time. So the
- 1:12:35takeaway of this
- 1:12:36story is it shows
- 1:12:36that local
- 1:12:37stewards within
- 1:12:38an industry
- 1:12:39can recognize
- 1:12:39their impact, can
- 1:12:41mobilize their
- 1:12:41peers, and can
- 1:12:43drive behavior
- 1:12:43change that
- 1:12:44spreads to a
- 1:12:46regional policy
- 1:12:47and political
- 1:12:48norms or
- 1:12:48public norms.
- 1:12:49This is something
- 1:12:50that it's a case
- 1:12:51of basically a
- 1:12:52voluntary action
- 1:12:53influencing legal
- 1:12:54frameworks and a
- 1:12:56small island
- 1:12:56communities
- 1:12:57protecting the
- 1:12:58giants of
- 1:12:58the sea.
- 1:12:59It can happen,
- 1:13:00folks. It can
- 1:13:00happen. And we
- 1:13:01are seeing it
- 1:13:02happen in front
- 1:13:03of our eyes. We
- 1:13:04know that this is
- 1:13:05something that
- 1:13:06needs to continue
- 1:13:07to be addressed,
- 1:13:08but it's
- 1:13:08something that we
- 1:13:09are going to look
- 1:13:10out for.
- 1:13:10And I want to
- 1:13:11make sure that we
- 1:13:11are documenting
- 1:13:13it, right? That's
- 1:13:14the biggest
- 1:13:15thing. Okay,
- 1:13:16let's move on to
- 1:13:17the next story.
- 1:13:19This one's going
- 1:13:19to be a quick
- 1:13:19one. I saw this
- 1:13:21on TikTok as I
- 1:13:22was scrolling
- 1:13:23through and I was
- 1:13:23like, look, I was
- 1:13:24like, you know,
- 1:13:25when you're in
- 1:13:26the ocean, you've
- 1:13:27got to be
- 1:13:27responsible and
- 1:13:28you've got to be
- 1:13:28careful.
- 1:13:29There are a lot
- 1:13:30of videos of
- 1:13:31sharks out there
- 1:13:32that are
- 1:13:33beautiful videos
- 1:13:34of sharks, people
- 1:13:34keeping their
- 1:13:35distance, seeing
- 1:13:36behaviors of
- 1:13:36sharks that are
- 1:13:38non aggressive,
- 1:13:39might be avoiding
- 1:13:40sometimes
- 1:13:41swimming away.
- 1:13:41If they're
- 1:13:41swimming away,
- 1:13:42leave them alone.
- 1:13:43If they're
- 1:13:43swimming towards
- 1:13:44you, take
- 1:13:44precautions and
- 1:13:45so forth. This is
- 1:13:46not for everybody
- 1:13:47being
- 1:13:48around a shark.
- 1:13:49A lot of times
- 1:13:49when you see
- 1:13:50people in videos,
- 1:13:50they've been
- 1:13:50around sharks for
- 1:13:52a long time and
- 1:13:53they know the
- 1:13:53risks, but they
- 1:13:54also know how to
- 1:13:55behave around
- 1:13:56sharks in
- 1:13:56different types
- 1:13:57of behaviors that
- 1:13:58they exhibit.
- 1:13:59If they're more
- 1:13:59aggressive, they
- 1:14:00know what to do.
- 1:14:01They're less
- 1:14:01aggressive, they
- 1:14:01know what to do
- 1:14:02and they know not
- 1:14:02to prod and poke
- 1:14:03for most part.
- 1:14:04So you have to be
- 1:14:05careful if you're
- 1:14:06not somebody
- 1:14:06who's been around
- 1:14:07sharks for a long
- 1:14:08time to be
- 1:14:08careful and just
- 1:14:09stay away and
- 1:14:10don't touch.
- 1:14:11Obviously, that's
- 1:14:11something that
- 1:14:12every scuba diver
- 1:14:13knows everybody
- 1:14:13should
- 1:14:14know as well.
- 1:14:15All right. I
- 1:14:15wanted to just
- 1:14:17kind of look at a
- 1:14:18video. There's no
- 1:14:19sound on
- 1:14:20this video.
- 1:14:20Well, there's
- 1:14:21probably music on
- 1:14:22it, but there's
- 1:14:22no sound. It says
- 1:14:23here shark
- 1:14:24attacks jet ski.
- 1:14:25And so when I see
- 1:14:26this, I'm already
- 1:14:27very curious of
- 1:14:30what's
- 1:14:30happening here.
- 1:14:31Sharks just don't
- 1:14:32go and attack jet
- 1:14:33skis on its own.
- 1:14:35Sharks will react
- 1:14:37to
- 1:14:37certain things.
- 1:14:38And when I saw
- 1:14:39this, when I
- 1:14:39initially saw
- 1:14:40this, I was like,
- 1:14:40I have a feeling
- 1:14:41this is not a
- 1:14:42shark attack or
- 1:14:43shark event.
- 1:14:44So let's just
- 1:14:45take a look and
- 1:14:46see what this is
- 1:14:47all about.
- 1:14:48And I want to I
- 1:14:49want to kind of
- 1:14:49talk about it
- 1:14:50right after just
- 1:14:51what not to do
- 1:14:52around a shark.
- 1:14:53If you see a
- 1:14:53shark in the
- 1:14:54ocean, this is
- 1:14:54obviously a very
- 1:14:55shallow area in
- 1:14:55the ocean, very
- 1:14:56clear water.
- 1:14:57You can see that
- 1:14:57this is a shark.
- 1:14:58And here we go.
- 1:15:00So he's got a jet
- 1:15:01ski. He's in and
- 1:15:02around the shark.
- 1:15:03He's following
- 1:15:03the shark sharks
- 1:15:04trying to
- 1:15:04get away.
- 1:15:05It's pretty big
- 1:15:05shark and it goes
- 1:15:07after the boat or
- 1:15:09it goes after the
- 1:15:09jet ski and watch
- 1:15:10it again.
- 1:15:11Again, moving
- 1:15:12away from the
- 1:15:13ship or from the
- 1:15:14jet ski
- 1:15:15coming close.
- 1:15:16Yeah, you're
- 1:15:16annoying the
- 1:15:17shark. Let's
- 1:15:18watch it
- 1:15:18one more time.
- 1:15:19You know, don't
- 1:15:20annoy big sharks.
- 1:15:21Don't annoy
- 1:15:21sharks at all.
- 1:15:22You're following
- 1:15:23this with a loud
- 1:15:24boat and people
- 1:15:26just people don't
- 1:15:28like jet skis.
- 1:15:28And this shark
- 1:15:29definitely
- 1:15:29doesn't like the
- 1:15:30jet ski. So I
- 1:15:31want to share
- 1:15:32that with you of
- 1:15:32what not to
- 1:15:33do sharks.
- 1:15:33And that's not a
- 1:15:34shark attack.
- 1:15:34This is a shark
- 1:15:34defending itself
- 1:15:35and just be
- 1:15:37better around
- 1:15:38around sharks.
- 1:15:39That's really
- 1:15:39what it comes
- 1:15:41down to is you
- 1:15:41just you just
- 1:15:42have to be better
- 1:15:43and act better
- 1:15:44and act more
- 1:15:45responsible when
- 1:15:47you're
- 1:15:47around sharks.
- 1:15:48OK, now we are
- 1:15:49going to go into
- 1:15:50I want to show
- 1:15:51the trailer. I
- 1:15:51don't know if I
- 1:15:52have the rights
- 1:15:53to show the
- 1:15:53trailer.
- 1:15:54So hopefully they
- 1:15:54don't take this
- 1:15:55down. But I
- 1:15:56wanted to show
- 1:15:57part of the
- 1:15:57trailer, at least
- 1:15:58for the David,
- 1:16:01the David
- 1:16:01Attenborough
- 1:16:02movie Ocean.
- 1:16:03He turned ninety
- 1:16:03nine this week.
- 1:16:04So it's pretty
- 1:16:05cool. So here we
- 1:16:06go. We're going
- 1:16:06to just kind of
- 1:16:07talk about it.
- 1:16:08We're going to
- 1:16:08see what this is
- 1:16:09all about. So
- 1:16:12here I'm actually
- 1:16:13not going to
- 1:16:13allow the
- 1:16:14sound plays.
- 1:16:14I don't know if
- 1:16:15I'm allowed to
- 1:16:15play this, but
- 1:16:16this is just the
- 1:16:18trailer. You can
- 1:16:18go see it. I'll
- 1:16:19link to it in the
- 1:16:20show notes,
- 1:16:20showing a lot of
- 1:16:21beautiful images,
- 1:16:22talking about
- 1:16:23some of the
- 1:16:24problems here.
- 1:16:25And I'm going to
- 1:16:25stop here because
- 1:16:26I really don't
- 1:16:26think I'm allowed
- 1:16:27to play this, but
- 1:16:28we'll see.
- 1:16:29But anyway, what
- 1:16:30this talks about
- 1:16:31in this in the
- 1:16:33movie, a big part
- 1:16:34of this come out
- 1:16:35of the movie
- 1:16:35because it was
- 1:16:36originally aired
- 1:16:37May 8 in the U.K.
- 1:16:39Was really about
- 1:16:41trolley. There
- 1:16:43was a lot on on
- 1:16:44trolley. There
- 1:16:44was a there was
- 1:16:45an incident or a
- 1:16:46scene in the
- 1:16:47movie where the
- 1:16:49troll shows it
- 1:16:50actually
- 1:16:50functioning.
- 1:16:51And essentially,
- 1:16:51if you don't know
- 1:16:52what a troll is,
- 1:16:54it is a net, a
- 1:16:56huge net that has
- 1:16:58an opening and
- 1:16:59strings that are
- 1:17:00attached
- 1:17:00to the boat.
- 1:17:01And then when it
- 1:17:02is laid out, it's
- 1:17:02got these boards
- 1:17:03on the bottom and
- 1:17:05those boards and
- 1:17:06then a chain
- 1:17:06along that is
- 1:17:07attaching those
- 1:17:08boards and those
- 1:17:08go along
- 1:17:09the bottom.
- 1:17:09So when it gets
- 1:17:09released, it goes
- 1:17:10to the on the
- 1:17:11bottom on the
- 1:17:12ground, the sea
- 1:17:12floor, usually in
- 1:17:14a shallow area,
- 1:17:14sometimes in a
- 1:17:15deeper area.
- 1:17:15And then
- 1:17:16essentially what
- 1:17:16happens is those
- 1:17:17doors give it
- 1:17:17weight, the
- 1:17:18chain. And as the
- 1:17:19boat moves, it
- 1:17:20just scrapes
- 1:17:21along the ocean
- 1:17:22and the
- 1:17:23ocean bottom.
- 1:17:24And it just
- 1:17:24destroys
- 1:17:24everything that's
- 1:17:26that's underneath
- 1:17:26it or that's in
- 1:17:27its pathway,
- 1:17:28ideally bringing
- 1:17:29fish into the net
- 1:17:31and is catching
- 1:17:31indiscriminately
- 1:17:32fish or fish
- 1:17:34indiscriminately.
- 1:17:35It can catch sea
- 1:17:35turtles. It can
- 1:17:36catch dolphins.
- 1:17:37It can catch a
- 1:17:38lot of things.
- 1:17:39And we just you
- 1:17:40know, you never
- 1:17:41know what you're
- 1:17:41going to catch.
- 1:17:42There have been
- 1:17:42sea lions in
- 1:17:43there. There have
- 1:17:43been sharks in
- 1:17:44there, all
- 1:17:45different sizes,
- 1:17:45whale sharks,
- 1:17:46depending on the
- 1:17:47size of the net.
- 1:17:48And then it
- 1:17:49brings it up and
- 1:17:49then people sift
- 1:17:50through it and
- 1:17:51they get rid of
- 1:17:51what they don't
- 1:17:52want and what
- 1:17:52they call
- 1:17:53bycatch.
- 1:17:54And then they go
- 1:17:55and then they
- 1:17:55leave. They keep
- 1:17:56whatever they
- 1:17:56want and
- 1:17:56they leave.
- 1:17:57But a lot of
- 1:17:57stuff that they
- 1:17:58throw over the
- 1:17:58bycatch end up
- 1:17:59dying on either
- 1:18:00on the way up,
- 1:18:01depending on how
- 1:18:01deep it is or as
- 1:18:03they're just on
- 1:18:03the getting
- 1:18:04sifted through a
- 1:18:05way to get sifted
- 1:18:06through and
- 1:18:06thrown overboard.
- 1:18:07So it's very
- 1:18:08destructive
- 1:18:08fishing. It's
- 1:18:09something
- 1:18:09especially
- 1:18:09in the UK.
- 1:18:10They're trying to
- 1:18:11get banned
- 1:18:11because up until
- 1:18:12recently,
- 1:18:13trawling was
- 1:18:13allowed in the
- 1:18:14marine protected
- 1:18:15areas, which
- 1:18:15doesn't really
- 1:18:16protect anything
- 1:18:17in that area.
- 1:18:18If you're trying
- 1:18:18to destroy the
- 1:18:19bottom, it will
- 1:18:20take basically a
- 1:18:20swath of couple
- 1:18:21of kilometers.
- 1:18:22That's maybe 20
- 1:18:24feet wide, you
- 1:18:25know, something
- 1:18:26like that. Nine,
- 1:18:27nine meters wide,
- 1:18:28maybe a little,
- 1:18:28maybe a
- 1:18:29little less.
- 1:18:30And and it'll
- 1:18:31just take these
- 1:18:31strips out of the
- 1:18:32habitat.
- 1:18:32And if you
- 1:18:33continue to trawl
- 1:18:34over the same
- 1:18:34habitat, you're
- 1:18:35going to destroy
- 1:18:36a lot of things.
- 1:18:37It's not just
- 1:18:37going to be one
- 1:18:37pathway. It's
- 1:18:38going to be a lot
- 1:18:39of things.
- 1:18:40So that's
- 1:18:40something that we
- 1:18:40have to be
- 1:18:41careful of.
- 1:18:41And that really
- 1:18:42what's
- 1:18:43interesting about
- 1:18:43the movie is it
- 1:18:44showed exactly
- 1:18:45what happened
- 1:18:46during the trial.
- 1:18:47It had, you know,
- 1:18:48the opening and
- 1:18:49showed it
- 1:18:50in the water.
- 1:18:50And then you saw
- 1:18:51a trial actually
- 1:18:52working.
- 1:18:52We've talked
- 1:18:53about trials
- 1:18:53before, but this
- 1:18:54is really one of
- 1:18:55the first times
- 1:18:56that people in a
- 1:18:57large scale
- 1:18:57audience have
- 1:18:58seen this type of
- 1:19:00of incident.
- 1:19:01And people were
- 1:19:02not happy.
- 1:19:03It was very
- 1:19:03emotional.
- 1:19:04Obviously, David
- 1:19:04Attenborough, Sir
- 1:19:05David
- 1:19:05Attenborough is a
- 1:19:07genius when it
- 1:19:07comes to
- 1:19:08communication,
- 1:19:09really pulling at
- 1:19:10the heartstrings
- 1:19:11when you see a
- 1:19:12scene like this
- 1:19:13and something
- 1:19:14that nobody
- 1:19:15wants to see.
- 1:19:16So I thought it
- 1:19:16was interesting
- 1:19:17to share.
- 1:19:18I will be
- 1:19:18watching the
- 1:19:19movie is coming
- 1:19:19out in my local
- 1:19:20area, Burlington,
- 1:19:21Ontario on the
- 1:19:2224th of May.
- 1:19:23I'm hoping
- 1:19:23to go see it.
- 1:19:24I'd like to
- 1:19:25go see it.
- 1:19:26And I will do
- 1:19:27more review on
- 1:19:28the movie and
- 1:19:29what I thought of
- 1:19:30it when I when I
- 1:19:32come back from
- 1:19:32that movie.
- 1:19:33So that's what we
- 1:19:34have for today.
- 1:19:35That's the story.
- 1:19:37Wanted to just
- 1:19:37kind of let that,
- 1:19:38you know, let
- 1:19:39that sink in and
- 1:19:41hope you get to
- 1:19:42see the movie.
- 1:19:42You've seen
- 1:19:42the movie.
