- 3:47Speaker 2: Well, hello there.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It's wonderful to have you all with us today as we are continuing our Advent series.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Today, we're focusing on peace, the gift of peace, the peace that Jesus promises in John 14, 27, where he says peace, I leave with you, my peace I give to you.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I do not give to you as the world gives.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I think it's a comforting reminder.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Especially during the craziness of Christmas, the busyness of this Advent season, life feels chaotic, our hearts can feel restless.
- 4:21Speaker 2: We're kind of in that season where we're thinking about what 2024 has been and we're anticipating 2025, and it's the holidays and there's a lot that can go on during the holidays, and so our hearts can just feel all over the place and not at peace or rest.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And so this is a promise from Jesus that meets us right where we are.
- 4:42Speaker 2: His peace is unlike anything the world can offer.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Sometimes you don't realize that you don't have that sense of peace until you lay your head on the pillow at night.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I think, and I think sometimes, when we lay our head on the pillow or we wake up in the middle of the night or we wake up in the morning we sense that discomfort, dissatisfaction, discontent, disconnection, and I think sometimes that's when we start running to broken cisterns to comfort ourselves.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And if we would really pause and think about it and really turn to Jesus and maybe open up our scripture or meditate, in those times we would see that God says my peace I give to you is unlike anything the world gives.
- 5:25Speaker 2: So the beauty of this piece is that it's not just about the absence of conflict or the absence of trouble.
- 5:32Speaker 2: That's often what we think peace is of the day to day.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It's just an absence of something that's difficult.
- 5:37Speaker 2: But this piece that Jesus talks about is something deeper.
- 5:40Speaker 2: It's a piece that goes beyond the circumstances because it's rooted in actually the character of Jesus.
- 5:47Speaker 2: He is our Prince of Peace.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think sometimes we focus in on joy or love or some of these other characteristics.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I don't know that we associate Christmas with peace, but if you look at Romans 5.1, it says that, therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord, jesus Christ.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So the coming of Christ, the celebration of Jesus's birth, is at its core and the foundation of it is that we now are able to have peace with God.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And I agree with you so much Kimberly, with what you're just saying.
- 6:23Speaker 1: For me, when I say I just want peace, there's two things I want.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I want no conflict and I want everyone to do everything the way I want it done when I want it done.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:35Speaker 1: That's my definition of peace and that is not at all the type of peace that Jesus is presenting to us.
- 6:41Speaker 1: He is presenting to us that peace that you're talking about, that transcends the circumstances, because it's being able to be at peace whether you're in the storm or life is going well.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But it's such good news that Jesus gave himself so that we could have peace with God.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And as you're reading that first verse in John 14, 27,.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I love again.
- 7:03Speaker 1: We kind of talked about this a little bit last week when we were talking about how Jesus gives us his joy.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I love how, in that John 14, 27 verse, it says peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And again, I don't know how often I connect that it's not just God will give you peace, god will give you his peace.
- 7:25Speaker 1: God will actually give you himself because he is peace, he is the Prince of Peace, and so it's a much deeper and weightier thought than just being able to be at peace with God and peace in our circumstances.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm so grateful that Jesus came to be that sacrifice for us, because our sins have created such a barrier.
- 7:46Speaker 1: But the barrier has been removed and now we get to have a relationship with God, and I think oftentimes, growing up in the church, I can almost take that for granted because that's just what I've always been taught and learned.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But when you really stop and think about it, the God of the universe, the God that breathed forth all the stars and created this massive universe that we don't even understand how large it is, also wants a relationship with us, and he wants to give us himself.
- 8:14Speaker 1: In the middle of that, I think during the Advent time, we need to remember that this peace came into the world in the form of a baby, and Jesus stepped into our brokenness and he reconciled us to God, and that's why we can have true peace even in the midst of life's struggles.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Now it becomes this thing where we're trying to figure out how we can find this peace and reconcile ourselves with God, reconcile ourselves to our own shame and conflict and inside our own heart, and also reconcile ourselves with others.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Well, as you've just said, Elizabeth, we are reconciled because Jesus came and broke the barrier as his children.
- 8:52Speaker 2: We do have peace with God, it's just a fact.
- 8:56Speaker 2: We have peace with him on this side of the cross as his children, and that's what we've stepped into as his children.
- 9:04Speaker 2: We've stepped into that relationship with God where we have peace with Him, and we have to continue to work out that relationship, not through striving, but through relationship and through obedience and humility and all the things that Scripture calls us to.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But the reality is is he broke the barrier and gave us peace with Him.
- 9:24Speaker 2: In order, I think, to have peace with others as well, I think we have to have peace first within us and think about the fact that, like I said earlier, you know, we get really caught up in the stress and the busyness of everything and we don't have peace.
- 9:38Speaker 2: So I think we have to go back to Psalm 46, 10, which invites us to be still and know that he is God.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Because being still isn't about doing nothing.
- 9:50Speaker 2: That's laziness or slothfulness, right.
- 9:54Speaker 2: It's about being still.
- 9:55Speaker 2: It's about intentionally pursuing and pausing, rest in God's presence, and when we take the time to be still, we open up our hearts to His peace, and it's His peace that guards our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus, as Philippians tells us and it goes on to say and the peace that surpasses all understanding is what guards our hearts and our minds, and it doesn't make sense when, especially when, life can feel chaotic or difficult or stressful and hard and crazy, but when we invite Jesus into that restlessness, his presence calms our hearts in ways that no one or nothing can.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And so it is the truth that that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, he saves the crushed in spirit and he's offering you his tender love and his healing in your wounded places.
- 10:52Speaker 2: If you can also just be still and know him, and as you know that you have peace with God and he brings, that you allow him to bring that peace into your heart, I think it's then that we genuinely and truly can have peace in our relationships.
- 11:11Speaker 1: You know, kimberly, as you're talking about the need for stillness and needing to almost cultivate almost like a gardener kind of watches over the garden, you have to cultivate peace in your life.
- 11:22Speaker 1: It's not just something you can plant and walk away and hope it survives, because it won't.
- 11:27Speaker 1: There's too many outside forces and then, as you were also talking, those internal voices, the worries, the fears, the doubts, the stress that we're always working with, and I think that's why stillness is so hard.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I mean, I'll speak for me.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I'm sure it is for many people.
- 11:41Speaker 1: It's when I get still I feel like all of that stuff kind of can collapse on top of me if I'm not careful, and so oftentimes I just keep running Like you just keep going.
- 11:53Speaker 1: If I'm just active and busy and churning and running on the gerbil wheel of life, I don't have time to have to sit with all of that stuff.
- 12:01Speaker 1: But what God is saying is come, be still and don't just be still and stew and all of your own stuff.
- 12:08Speaker 1: But come, be still and don't just be still and stew and all of your own stuff, but come, be still and know me, and that I think we taught.
- 12:13Speaker 1: You mentioned broken cisterns a little earlier in the podcast and I think that's where I run to my cisterns is.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I just want to numb out.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I don't want to think about things that are hard or difficult, that I'm having to face.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I don't want to think about all the worries and the fears of things I can't control.
- 12:29Speaker 1: What I can control is this carton of ice cream in front of me and it brings me a level of joy and satisfaction in the moment and it makes me feel good for about 30 seconds, and so it's.
- 12:41Speaker 1: It is a battle to live at in peace within yourself, and then, as you were saying, if I'm not at peace within myself, it's going to spill over into my relationships.
- 12:54Speaker 1: And I think of James 3.17 that gives sucha practical picture of what godly wisdom looks like when it says the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
- 13:11Speaker 1: And I think that is what our ultimate goal is in all of our relationships, whether they be our family members, our friends, our coworkers, and I love that.
- 13:21Speaker 1: God's peace is what equips us to be able to become those peacemakers and without being first centered in God's peace on the inside, I'm not us to be able to become those peacemakers and without being first centered in God's peace on the inside, I'm not going to be gentle, I'm not going to be open to reason, I'm going to think I'm right all the time.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I'm not going to be full of mercy and good fruits.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I'm impartial and sincere, and so I think oftentimes I try to focus on how can I have a healthier relationship.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Before starting with the first part, which is how do I cultivate a heart inwardly that is at peace with God, that is receiving the peace of God and living in the peace of God?
- 14:01Speaker 1: How do we, kimberly, as our master mediator that I love to, I in the last few weeks have called you on the phone and said okay, here's a scenario.
- 14:10Speaker 1: How do I handle this?
- 14:12Speaker 1: How do we go about being peacemakers with those people around us?
- 14:19Speaker 1: Especially, let's think about gathering together as family at Christmastime, and there's probably a lot of different views and a lot of different things that people think and believe as we gather around our tables, and there's also a lot of family history where you come into a conversation and you're not just having the conversation you're having in the moment.
- 14:38Speaker 1: You've got all the baggage of that relationship coming into that conversation.
- 14:42Speaker 1: How do we cultivate peace and how do we become peacemakers with those around us?
- 14:48Speaker 2: I think the first thing to distinguish is being a peacemaker versus a peacekeeper, and what peace really means, like we said earlier, it's not the absence of conflict.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I think a lot of times people say let's just keep the peace, when actually peace isn't there.
- 15:05Speaker 2: So what does it look like to make peace?
- 15:09Speaker 2: I think that looks a little different.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I think making peace comes from, like you said in that James 3, 17 verse it comes from being gentle, being full of mercy, being impartial and being sincere.
- 15:20Speaker 2: It means having that peace in your heart, recognizing that you are reconciled to God and you first have peace with Him.
- 15:27Speaker 2: So you don't have to strive to be right.
- 15:29Speaker 2: You don't have to strive to make peace.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You're not pushing forward in this justice-oriented way to make peace relationally.
- 15:39Speaker 2: You are just called to be at peace with God and let that overflow, like we talked about last week, with hope.
- 15:47Speaker 2: It's an overflowing of the Spirit of God in you.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Oftentimes we come into situations and if we're gathering with family or friends, we're aware where there's tension, we're aware where there's disagreement, and it's not about coming in and making known your opinion, making everyone agree with whomever or whatever.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I was thinking about this earlier today.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I was thinking you know I'm going to be with some friends and family this year, that I know we don't agree on a lot of things, and I just thought, but we don't have to talk about it, like we can just be together.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I heard another young lady say the other day I like to just be with my family, I just want to be with my siblings and my family during this time, and I know that there's a family system there that has a lot of disagreement among them, and so I do think there's a longing in all of us to just be together.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So I think, during the Christmas season, the Advent season, the holiday season however you want to look at it where you're gathering a lot of people, I think the attitude behind peace here is that attitude of shalom in the Hebrew right.
- 17:01Speaker 2: It's that attitude of just breathing in and breathing out.
- 17:05Speaker 2: So I think it is an essence of what we said earlier with Psalm 46.10, of being still and knowing that he is God and just having a rest in that, just being able to know I'm at peace and I can bring peace to the situation.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Now, with that said, there are places where you're going to interact with others who may not want to be peaceable with you If you are facing those situations practically.
- 17:34Speaker 2: I think you have to remember that's what I'm talking about when I say there's not peace to keep, there's peace to make, and sometimes making peace again doesn't feel peaceful.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Because sometimes making peace again doesn't feel peaceful, because sometimes making peace means bringing light to darkness, and again this is going to look different for every situation.
- 17:59Speaker 2: So I'm always hesitant to talk about these things on the podcast because I don't want people going down certain paths or thinking I'm saying something, I'm not, because there's a lot of nuance to these things depending on your relationship and the topic and the circumstances.
- 18:13Speaker 2: But I think it's just important to know that In Matthew 5, 9, it says that blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So the attitude is that we are to be instruments of his peace.
- 18:26Speaker 2: We are to be about sowing unity and grace wherever we go, and when there's not peace, we're to bring light to that.
- 18:36Speaker 2: We're to bring light to the darkness.
- 18:38Speaker 2: So, rather than thinking about I've got to make peace in this situation, I've got to bring about unity, I've got to get everyone on the same page.
- 18:46Speaker 2: No, just think about shedding God's light into the darkness.
- 18:50Speaker 2: And if you think about it that way, it doesn't always mean this hard truth either.
- 18:55Speaker 2: It means the presence of Jesus, invited into that situation, which is going to look different depending on the situation.
- 19:03Speaker 2: So it's a high calling, but we're not doing it alone.
- 19:07Speaker 2: The Holy Spirit lives within us.
- 19:09Speaker 2: He empowers us to live as peacemakers and we are doing what the Lord's Prayer said, which is bringing God's kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.
- 19:19Speaker 2: The Lord's Prayer said, which is bringing God's kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven, and it's a challenge, but I think it's something that we have to choose, like we were saying earlier, to walk in intentionality and not strive for well, but I think a lot of us go into these family gatherings with this subconscious thought I don't know that I've ever really verbalized it, but I know it's there of what I want my family to be for me in this event.
- 19:57Speaker 1: What I want out of this event and I think that's where a lot of the conflict can come up is because you've got six people showing up and everyone is subconsciously, whether they want to admit it or not, we are all kind of bent that way.
- 20:11Speaker 1: So all of us have something we want met in us as we come together as a family.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Right?
- 20:17Speaker 1: Sure, like the people in my family are not equipped to give me what I really want.
- 20:21Speaker 1: What I really want is I want to be seen for who I really am.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I want to be loved for who I am.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I want to be appreciated for who I am.
- 20:29Speaker 1: And, yes, family can do that to some level.
- 20:32Speaker 1: But the only person who can really do that is Jesus.
- 20:36Speaker 1: He's the one who gives me my identity.
- 20:39Speaker 1: He's the one who makes me feel secure and loved and appreciated and seen.
- 20:44Speaker 1: And he did so much as you were talking about, you know us bringing light the world like Jesus did.
- 20:48Speaker 1: That's what he did so well is he noticed people.
- 20:52Speaker 1: He saw people that other people were overlooking and he spoke to them In my own head.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I've had to kind of been working on doing some rearranging of the priorities.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Okay, this year when my family gets together, I'm not going into it, all right, I hope my family meets my needs.
- 21:09Speaker 1: But as much as I want to be seen, as much as I want to be loved, as much as I want to be appreciated just for who I am, I'm pretty sure that's what everyone else in the room wants as well, because it is the human bit.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that's what everyone else in the room wants as well, because it is the human bit.
- 21:22Speaker 1: So how can I go into my family and be intentional about speaking those words of blessing and those words of life, of noticing when one of my relatives does something or a word of gratitude hey, thank you so much for, even if it's just taking my plate off the table?
- 21:41Speaker 1: You know it doesn't have to be anything big and it doesn't have to turn to this big religious, spiritual event kind of thing.
- 21:46Speaker 1: But just asking more questions rather than waiting for someone to come talk to me, just kind of just flipping the switch and going okay, what if you go into your holiday season this time of year, christmas, whatever event it might be and this could be with coworkers as well.
- 22:02Speaker 1: What if I do go to the Christmas party with my coworkers and no one initiates a conversation with me?
- 22:08Speaker 1: I can either go home and be upset that no one wanted to talk to me, or I can go, you know what, maybe everyone else here is just as uncomfortable as I am and I can start a conversation with someone else and ask them questions about them.
- 22:22Speaker 1: And I think all of that is kind of this core layer of peacemaking is being honest about our own expectations and not really looking to other people, which can be a broken cistern to fill places that only God is able to fill, and maybe that takes some of the pressure off of the holiday and therefore it feels more peaceful.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And, like you were saying, you have friends who said I just want to be, I just want to be with my siblings.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Okay, well, great, let's just be.
- 22:50Speaker 1: But what does that mean?
- 22:51Speaker 1: What does being mean to that person and what is their expectation when they say that?
- 22:57Speaker 1: Thinking about all that, what are some ways that we can help cultivate peace, not only when we get together with our family, but just in our everyday life.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I think I just mentioned one of them, which was looking for ways to be grateful and for pointing out things that draw others in to be curious and ask those questions of other people, rather than coming with a judgmental attitude or criticism or the other things that come so naturally to us as humans.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think another suggestion would be creating and sitting in the moment's stillness and silence and solitude, like we've been talking about, and that can be a quiet morning or quiet evening with scripture.
- 23:39Speaker 2: It can be lighting the advent candle, taking a walk, reflecting on God's presence, it can be sitting still by the fire.
- 23:47Speaker 2: There's lots of different ways that you can do that.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I think it was last year on, I think it's December 21st or I think it's December 21st or 22nd.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I went to it's like the longest day of the year kind of thing, and a lot of people have called it like a blue night or a blue Christmas.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And some good friends of mine that are on staff at a church were doing a longest night service and we lit candles that were in blue vases and it was truly a moment where we went into this church that was mostly not totally dark but dim and we sang songs of hope and peace and joy and love and we lit candles and we were just still, we read scripture but we just were to sit and receive and I got to tell you it was one of the most beautiful services I've participated in, because it was so meaningful to be able to pause and I remember like even going there was there was a hustle and bustle of getting there and trying to grab dinner beforehand and just being in traffic and lots of things, but that's the reality of the world and so being able to sit in that space.
- 25:06Speaker 2: So I would say, look for opportunities to do that.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Maybe it's a church around you, maybe it's in your own home, maybe it's with a gathering of family and friends and you do it together in community.
- 25:17Speaker 2: It can look like a lot of different things, but I think creating and intentionally sitting in those moments of stillness and silence is another way that we can cultivate peace in our hearts.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Elizabeth, are there any other thoughts that you have on cultivating peace this season?
- 25:36Speaker 1: No deep ones, but I'm just sitting there listening to you describe that service and going, oh yeah, let's go do that.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Because I think in a lot of ways you know, people have made jokes about it.
- 25:47Speaker 1: You see it all over social media this year has been extremely fast.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I don't know, and I'm sure I say that about every year, but I kind of like, okay, I remember something happened in April and boom, here we are in December and so it just feels like we have been on a treadmill running, running, running, running.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And so, as you were talking about creating these spaces for peace, it's like, okay, I've got to have to be intentional to make that happen.
- 26:13Speaker 1: That's not going to naturally happen between now and the end of the year.
- 26:16Speaker 1: So how do I get that on my calendar?
- 26:18Speaker 1: How do I block off a time and just say no emails, no phone, no nothing, and just sit and be and allow Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to reveal himself and bring his peace more into my life?
- 26:32Speaker 1: And I think it will be as refreshing as that service sounded that you went to of just giving yourself a chance to slow down and be still and just feel it.
- 26:44Speaker 1: And I think it's also about being intentional to pray and bless your spirit and pray and ask God to allow his peace to be very present in your life.
- 26:55Speaker 1: His peace is always there, and that's the thing is.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Even as we pray, you know, Lord, would you bring your peace?
- 27:01Speaker 1: He's.
- 27:01Speaker 1: If he's in you, you have his peace in you all the time.
- 27:05Speaker 1: It's just a matter of recognizing that peace and living from it.
- 27:08Speaker 1: So I'd love to wrap us up with with a blessing as we close out our podcast.
- 27:13Speaker 1: May the Prince of Peace reveal himself to you today.
- 27:18Speaker 1: May your heart be still and know that he is God, allowing his presence to calm your restless spirit.
