- 0:00Happy Saturday morning, everybody.
- 0:05There's Dee. She looks good.
- 0:08She's all fixed up. She got to go to a funeral
- 0:12today, so I'm sorry about that. Long, long distant friend of
- 0:16hers she's had for a long time. All right, hold on.
- 0:21I got you. Got to see this.
- 0:24What are you doing, King? You're a lion, OK?
- 0:36We won last night, man. I didn't think I was going to
- 0:40win. I mean, it's not that I didn't
- 0:44think I was going to win, but I battled side by side with Chase
- 0:47Holland. He come up from Mississippi,
- 0:51Louisiana, but he's a hot rod. He's fast.
- 0:54We ran side by side for five laps and used little technique
- 1:01and let that baby roll the middle use the minimal brake.
- 1:04My car was handled good early. I was using a little too much
- 1:07brake entering and we had one caution, 1 caution.
- 1:13It was a 20 lap. A main had one caution.
- 1:16And what's that about? What's that a little about, huh?
- 1:22She she gave the little what's going on now simmer down.
- 1:28I'm telling the story, dammit. So I adjusted my driving a
- 1:34little bit and was able to pull off the wind.
- 1:39OK Tonight is pevely Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park.
- 1:46They added the park on the end there.
- 1:49So I was thinking to myself, what am I going to talk about
- 1:53today? Well, last night there is a
- 1:58really good race car driver. He's fast, he's in my division
- 2:02and his name is Owen Stein king #5 And out of nowhere, I mean
- 2:08this, this kid will say hi to me, but he don't talk to me very
- 2:11much. He's kind of quiet.
- 2:13He came up to me and it shocked me.
- 2:17He looked at me and he's, and it was early in the night and he
- 2:22said, Kenny, how did you make it to NASCAR?
- 2:28Just as simple as that. And I looked at him and for a
- 2:32minute I thought, you know what? This is a generation gap.
- 2:37He's a young race car driver. He, he knows about me, but he
- 2:43don't know of me. In other words, he wasn't there
- 2:45for it because he probably wasn't born yet.
- 2:48And I thought, you know, I I told this story, I think before,
- 2:51but I really haven't told it in detail.
- 2:55So Owen Stein, King, local race car driver, good racer, Winsor
- 3:01race here or there. He said, Kenny, how did you make
- 3:04it to NASCAR? So I grabbed my phone and I put
- 3:09it in my notes. Oh, now you want.
- 3:12Well, now he's seeking attention.
- 3:13Look at him. He was over there, but he knows
- 3:15the camera's rolling now, Louie, see, you know the camera's
- 3:19rolling now, don't you, buddy? Oh, now, now he wants attention.
- 3:26OK, so I'm going to tell you how I made it to NASCAR.
- 3:29Please listen. Because it's you know, when you
- 3:35have these journeys, you don't tell people because it's
- 3:39exhausting. The reason I don't tell
- 3:42everybody my journeys because it's exhausting.
- 3:45OK, so here we go. When I was born, my dad was a
- 3:49race car driver for a hobby and it's what he did when I when I
- 3:53grew up, my dad was racing locally.
- 3:56That's because of what my dad did.
- 3:59So then there was three boys, no girls.
- 4:02Rusty Mike Kenney. Rusty is the oldest.
- 4:06He's seven years older than me. Mike is 4 years older than me
- 4:11and I'll be 60 due August 23rd. So we grew up as a racing family
- 4:16around this area and grew up in Rolla, MO, about 80 miles West
- 4:22of here, Southwest. And Dad, Dad was always doing
- 4:27good. That's what I remember.
- 4:28Dad was always doing good, winning, running competitively.
- 4:33Dad's won like 400 races. And Rusty came along, Big
- 4:40Brother Rusty Wallace, I say his full name.
- 4:43So some people that don't know me very well, I see people on
- 4:47here all the time. They go Kenny Wallace, I started
- 4:50following you and they usually like my life stories.
- 4:56By the way, I do try to mix the stories up.
- 4:59Do you like it? Respond right here, my daughter
- 5:03say dad, when I see you promoting a race, a race coffee
- 5:08with Kenny. We don't even watch.
- 5:10I said thanks kids. So I've been doing some life
- 5:14stories lately. You know my health update from
- 5:17Mayo, the dementia deal. Peep Dad's in their 50s.
- 5:21I hope you enjoy them. I'm doing that on purpose,
- 5:24trying to mix it up a little bit.
- 5:26It's not all racing all the time.
- 5:29It's not all racing all the time.
- 5:32So anyway, I set the stage for you.
- 5:34My dad was a local race car driver and won a lot of races.
- 5:39Then Rusty was born. Rusty's the alpha male and Rusty
- 5:44was always a gadgeteer. He was always a fixer.
- 5:48Rusty come along and he started doing everything himself.
- 5:51Dad got older, all of us boys started helping Dad.
- 5:55And Fast forward, Rusty started travelling.
- 6:00We had some local sponsors here in town.
- 6:03Don Kern. Kern Racing Engines built the
- 6:06motors. John Child's child's tire out no
- 6:10Foulon him and his brothers owned some tower stores and they
- 6:13liked racing. So when I was a kid, I started
- 6:17helping Rusty. Of course I helped dad too.
- 6:20I changed the gears. I you know, pulled the brake
- 6:25drums off and wire brushed the, you know, brakes and blew them
- 6:29out with the hose. And dad ran dirt on Friday at
- 6:34Tri-City and then on asphalt on Sunday.
- 6:38So we took the same car. So it was a it was a family
- 6:42tradition. What you did is, you know, when
- 6:44you got done running that dirt race on Friday night, Saturday
- 6:47you swap the car over. You used the dirt car on an
- 6:51asphalt track. So I started learning how to
- 6:54fabricate. Well, when Rusty went racing,
- 6:58Rusty recognized I'm, I'm Kenny, little Kenny, me.
- 7:03I'm full of piss and vinegar. I'm a worker.
- 7:06And like Rusty says, to this day, he says, Herman, you're a
- 7:10wiry little son of a bitch. It's true.
- 7:15Nick Hoffman calls me Skinny Kenny.
- 7:17I can't help it. It's just I was born hyperactive
- 7:21and I dig. I go hard.
- 7:25I feel guilty if I don't. It's it's I think my dad taught
- 7:28me that I feel guilty if I sit around too much.
- 7:31Maybe maybe it's a curse. Maybe I should learn to relax.
- 7:36We're going to Cabo tomorrow. We're going to Cabo tomorrow.
- 7:40I'll relax there. So Rusty recognized that I was a
- 7:46go getter. Mike wanted to stay here at home
- 7:49and race. So Mike stayed here and Rusty
- 7:52started travelling. Fridays, Rusty would wait for me
- 7:56to get off work and we'd go to, we'd go to Springfield, MO.
- 8:00Springfield, MO and we erase Mark Martin, Larry Phillips.
- 8:06There you go. It's like, oh, we were born in
- 8:08the Midwest. What kind of races are from the
- 8:10Midwest? Mark Martin, Carl Edwards, Jamie
- 8:15McMurray, Kenny Schrader. Not everybody from California
- 8:20and New York. So we had some, we had some hot
- 8:23rods around here. Now you know, Carl Edwards,
- 8:26Jamie McMurray, they all copy Rusty.
- 8:30I think Schrader realized that the place to make money was full
- 8:33bodied cars. Schrader came NASCAR because
- 8:37there wasn't that much money. I mean, you the Indy 500 was
- 8:40really the only deal. I mean, you look at the the deal
- 8:43with Jeff Gordon. You asked Jeff Gordon, you asked
- 8:46Kenny Shrader. Why'd you go to NASCAR?
- 8:49That's where the show was and that's where the money was.
- 8:51There's a lot, there's not a big salary in Indycars.
- 8:55You make way more money being a race car driver in NASCAR.
- 8:59That's just that's the way it is.
- 9:01There's more races too. IndyCar, they only got like 1216
- 9:05races a year. There's more of an opportunity
- 9:07in NASCAR because you run 39 races.
- 9:12So I painted the picture for you and I worked hard for Rusty.
- 9:17So I started traveling well, when I started traveling, and
- 9:22this is what I told Owen Steinking last night when I
- 9:25started traveling with Rusty, I met Phil Homer at Goodyear
- 9:29Racing Tires. I met George Gillespie with Pro
- 9:33Shocks. I met the MSD ignition box guy,
- 9:37I met John Childs who bought Rusty's race cars or helped
- 9:41Rusty financially. I knew Don Kern for the motors,
- 9:47so when Rusty moved South in 1984 when he made it, I went
- 9:56with him with my girlfriend Kim. Kim was my girlfriend.
- 10:01So we followed Rusty and Patty down South in 1984 and Rusty
- 10:06drove the Gatorade car, the number 88 Gatorade car for Cliff
- 10:11Stewart right up there in Winston Salem.
- 10:14We went down Interstate 40 together.
- 10:17I made a right. I went S on 85.
- 10:22I went down to Charlotte and I got a job.
- 10:25Joe Rutman. I, I saw Joe Rutman in
- 10:30Jefferson, GA and he said would you come to work on our NASCAR
- 10:34Cup team? Man, I thought about it at the
- 10:38time. I'm repairing vacuum cleaners
- 10:40now. Remember that my real jobs, I
- 10:43repaired vacuum cleaners and I cleaned sewers out in the city
- 10:47streets and I repaired telephone cables underground in the city.
- 10:53So those were my 2 jobs. I was a vacuum cleaner repairman
- 10:58and I worked for Arnold Reuter and it wasn't all poop and pee
- 11:04and cleaning sewers out. It was my job was to maintain
- 11:11the sewer lids. You lift them up and the
- 11:13telephone wires were spliced underneath there.
- 11:16I maintained all those underground telephone wire
- 11:20splicing stations. So in other words, your
- 11:25telephone wires underground in the city of Saint Louis, they're
- 11:28just not one continuous. They cut in half a time.
- 11:32So the telephone people that they'd lift the lid up and I'd
- 11:36have it all ready for them. That was my job.
- 11:39My friends would see me in the city of Saint Louis.
- 11:43So Joe Rutman saw me in Jefferson, GA and I came back
- 11:48home and I told my girlfriend, not my friend, Said if you don't
- 11:51take that job, I'll regret it. So I moved S at the same damn
- 11:59time. Rusty got that ride, that
- 12:01Gatorade ride. So me and Kim in my old 1976 GMC
- 12:07pickup truck where I would pull in the gas station and I would
- 12:11say check the gas and fill it up with oil.
- 12:15It made it to Charlotte. We packed up like, oh, the
- 12:19Beverly Hillbillies. I spent a year down there and I
- 12:24met everybody. I met everybody in NASCAR.
- 12:27Now follow along here. This is very important.
- 12:31I met all the people that make parts through Rusty because I
- 12:34was Rusty's kid brother and I was paying attention and I'm a
- 12:38talker, so I'm talking to all the sponsors the whole time.
- 12:44And then I go to NASCAR and the crew chief quits.
- 12:47Jake Elder. Jake Elder quits in 1984.
- 12:52Gas, who becomes a crew chief? 1920 years old.
- 12:57Me. I think me and Doug Ricker were
- 13:00the youngest crew chiefs in NASCAR Cup history. 1920 years
- 13:06old. I was a Cup crew chief for Joe
- 13:08Rutman in the 1984 year. Levi Garrett was the sponsor.
- 13:17OK, let's Fast forward. That team shuts down and my dad
- 13:22misses me and dad goes, I'll pay you 20,000 a year to move back
- 13:25to Saint Louis. I was kind of missing home.
- 13:29We moved back home. We moved back home and it was
- 13:33duh. Listen, that that song is true.
- 13:35Life's a journey. Life is a journey.
- 13:39So I moved back home and man, they started that Daytona 500
- 13:43without me. I'll never forget it.
- 13:46I was crushed. I used to be down there and I
- 13:50found myself here and devastated that I decided to come home.
- 13:54But it turned out to be the best thing to ever happen.
- 14:00I called John Childs up. I said, John, I want to be a
- 14:03race car driver. Now.
- 14:04This is after after becoming a Cup crew chief.
- 14:09After this is 85. I go back to work on vacuum
- 14:14cleaners. I'm in day.
- 14:17I'm at the Daytona 500 and I moved back to Saint Louis and
- 14:21I'm repairing vacuum cleaners now.
- 14:24I'll Fast forward. I went straight to ASA.
- 14:29You talk about crazy. I was not even a race car
- 14:32driver. I guess I won that 1982 Illinois
- 14:36St. Stock state championship on the
- 14:39one mile dirt. That was an 82.
- 14:42But 8384 I never drove a thing. So my very first race on asphalt
- 14:48was ASA against Dick Trickle, Mike Eddy, Bob Seneca.
- 14:53So when I went to ASA, I'd never even drove a race car.
- 14:57My second race in my life, I finished fourth at Cayuga,
- 15:00Canada to Bob Seneca. I forgot who won that day and
- 15:05the rest is history. But here's the shortcut that
- 15:08you're wanting to know. You're wanting to know how I
- 15:11made it financially? Kim worked at Pope's cafeteria.
- 15:15She bought my Dylan trailer with her cafeteria money.
- 15:19She spent $2500. That's one reason we married.
- 15:25That was a joke. That was a joke when your
- 15:29girlfriend slash wife buys her. Well, we got married June 23rd,
- 15:331984. So this is 86, 86.
- 15:38Kim knows. She knows she's in for the long
- 15:41haul. She knows I'm going to be a race
- 15:42car driver. So that's a bonus right there
- 15:45boys. I'm she don't bitch about
- 15:47racing. She knows this is what we're
- 15:48going to do. I got, I struck gold.
- 15:53So when it came time for me to race, I got 3 free tires from
- 15:58Phil Homer. I got free shots.
- 16:01I got free MSD boxes. Don Kern gave me my motors, but
- 16:05I had to pay him a third. So if I won $1000, I had to give
- 16:10Don $300.00, so on and so forth and that is how I became a race
- 16:21car driver. Well then it's like how did you
- 16:25make it the NASCAR? Can he answer the question?
- 16:28Well I put in my reps I ran 1980680788 in ASA.
- 16:35I got a phone call November of 88, Big Brother Rusty Herman.
- 16:43Now this time Rusty and Patty are settled.
- 16:46Rusty says you want to run the Bush Grand National Series.
- 16:51Are you kidding me? Rusty got the Cox treated lumber
- 16:55sponsorship. He said you got to bring your
- 16:58truck and trailer down and all your equipment.
- 17:01This is the second trip back to North Carolina and the rest is
- 17:07history. Rusty.
- 17:09Rusty said I'm going to treat you like a bird.
- 17:13I'm going to teach you how to fly and then I'm going to let
- 17:15you go. I would have never made it
- 17:19without Rusty and Patty. I would have never made it
- 17:22without Rusty and Patty. I love my Big Brother so much.
- 17:26I love Patty. I would have never been there
- 17:29without them. However, I kept track.
- 17:34All those people I met. All right everybody, I hope you
- 17:38enjoyed that 18 minute story. Have a great Saturday and I'll
- 17:43see you at Pevely tonight.
