- 0:34Speaker 3: We're coming to you tonight from the Eccles Football Building
- 0:37Speaker 3: here on campus. And we're talking Utah football for the
- 0:39Speaker 3: next hour here on the Coaches Show presented by Smiths
- 0:41Speaker 3: with the head coach, Morgan Scali. And, of course, a
- 0:44Speaker 3: couple of players who will come by here tonight, too.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Daniel Bray and Jai Mo will represent the offense and
- 0:49Speaker 3: the defense, respectively, here this evening. We'll talk a little
- 0:53Speaker 3: bit about the big win over the Houston Cougars last
- 0:55Speaker 3: Saturday night in an electric atmosphere at Rice-Eccles Stadium and
- 0:58Speaker 3: going on the road in front of a sellout crowd
- 1:00Speaker 3: this weekend in Cincinnati in the sun. All that coming
- 1:04Speaker 3: up with head coach Morgan Scali here on a Tuesday
- 1:07Speaker 3: night right off the practice field, right upstairs, and right
- 1:11Speaker 3: into his chair ready to talk some football.
- 1:12Speaker 4: How are you?
- 1:13Speaker 5: Doing well, brother.
- 1:14Speaker 6: Good practice. Yeah?
- 1:15Speaker 5: You can kind of hear my voice is scorched a
- 1:19Speaker 5: little bit. A lot of communicating out there.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I thought those days were over now that you're the
- 1:26Speaker 3: CEO and head coach.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I thought you were leaving.
- 1:28Speaker 5: We got after it today.
- 1:29Speaker 4: You need Shaw and Colton Swan to do some of
- 1:31Speaker 4: that stuff.
- 1:33Speaker 6: Or Sharif.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Sharif.
- 1:34Speaker 6: I don't know how he does it.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Always doing it.
- 1:37Speaker 4: So good practice today.
- 1:38Speaker 5: Really good.
- 1:39Speaker 3: What constitutes a good practice in the head coach's eyes?
- 1:44Speaker 5: Uh, you can tell a lot by the guys that
- 1:47Speaker 5: aren't in how much they're paying attention, stealing reps, um,
- 1:53Speaker 5: you know, giving calls as if they were in there
- 1:55Speaker 5: going through the steps. So just the concentration levels got
- 1:59Speaker 5: to be there. Um, and it was awesome today. Scout teams, pods,
- 2:05Speaker 5: the pads were popping. You know, this is when you
- 2:07Speaker 5: got to get your physical, um, physical work in, and
- 2:11Speaker 5: we were able to do that.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Well, it was awesome Saturday night, too. The atmosphere, game day,
- 2:16Speaker 3: everything that led up to the game. I was even
- 2:18Speaker 3: telling Sly before the game, it was kind of giving
- 2:20Speaker 3: me 2022 USC vibes, another dark mode, blackout game, big game,
- 2:26Speaker 3: two nationally ranked opponents. It just felt big, and I think, Morgan,
- 2:31Speaker 3: it led, you know, it was like a good fight.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I mean, early on, it was just trade and blows,
- 2:35Speaker 3: not a lot of scoring, and then the second half changed,
- 2:38Speaker 3: and big plays were made, and I just thought it
- 2:40Speaker 3: was a great college football night Saturday night.
- 2:42Speaker 5: It was fantastic.
- 2:44Speaker 4: You're right.
- 2:45Speaker 5: And I said this at the press conference, just how
- 2:47Speaker 5: electric the crowd was. How about the PA guy shushing everyone?
- 2:52Speaker 5: I thought that was awesome. I was like, good for you, dude.
- 2:56Speaker 5: You know, just educate. A little education, a little education.
- 2:59Speaker 5: But it was rocking. You had that sack force fumble
- 3:03Speaker 5: from Benny and then the touchdown after that. But you're right.
- 3:07Speaker 5: That's what you would expect from two– Top 15 teams is,
- 3:13Speaker 5: you know, they're going to make some plays. We were
- 3:14Speaker 5: going to make some plays. Very proud of the defense.
- 3:17Speaker 5: The stops that they made in the red zone, those
- 3:19Speaker 5: were huge. Really, they played, you know, lights out all
- 3:23Speaker 5: night long. Gave up a couple of chunk yardage plays
- 3:26Speaker 5: and some combo coverage in man. But ultimately, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 5: it's part of this culture is just you just fight
- 3:35Speaker 5: until the end. You never know when the play is.
- 3:38Speaker 5: It's going to flip the script. And the offense, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 5: going into halftime, it's always interesting to see body language
- 3:46Speaker 5: and communication. It was awesome. You know, not panicking, figuring
- 3:51Speaker 5: things out, trusting that they were going to get things done.
- 3:55Speaker 5: And the defense, you know, loving them up. So that
- 4:00Speaker 5: is the leadership you need if you're You know, if
- 4:03Speaker 5: you want to be able to overcome adversity at the
- 4:07Speaker 5: highest level.
- 4:09Speaker 7: If you can recall, what was that exact moment you
- 4:12Speaker 7: guys felt blood in the water?
- 4:14Speaker 4: Right?
- 4:14Speaker 6: Because, you know, I mean, when I was on the sidelines,
- 4:16Speaker 6: I used to know. I was like, oh, come on.
- 4:18Speaker 7: Morgan's dialing up right now. When you were at D.C.,
- 4:20Speaker 7: you knew when you could just go blitz, blitz, blitz, blitz, blitz,
- 4:24Speaker 7: kind of how we were in the Sugar Bowl. I
- 4:25Speaker 7: felt like we were in, like, 60% blitz in that game.
- 4:29Speaker 7: But I felt like that in this moment in this
- 4:31Speaker 7: Houston game. When did you feel, or if you could recall,
- 4:34Speaker 7: when was that moment where you felt like, oh, this
- 4:36Speaker 7: is our opportunity.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Let's get after them?
- 4:39Speaker 5: I think there were a couple things. Number one, the
- 4:42Speaker 5: quarterback– he escapes for a long run, cuts back inside. Look,
- 4:47Speaker 5: I mean, it looks like he can score and then
- 4:48Speaker 5: ends up going down at that point. He kind of
- 4:50Speaker 5: knew something's up. And I, we had seen the TV
- 4:53Speaker 5: copy of the week prior and, and, you know, sometimes
- 4:57Speaker 5: in the cutup version, you don't see them wincing. You
- 5:01Speaker 5: don't see, uh, you know, after going down, we had seen,
- 5:05Speaker 5: so we wondered if, if something was up coming into
- 5:07Speaker 5: the game, but he started fresh and looked good. So
- 5:10Speaker 5: we didn't think anything of it. But if that was
- 5:11Speaker 5: the moment I was like, Hmm, then, uh, They stopped
- 5:14Speaker 5: running him because they were used to seeing some cue
- 5:20Speaker 5: run games, some cue counters. Something at that point, yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 5: So when they stopped running him, we kind of figured, okay.
- 5:27Speaker 5: And then our D-line was doing such a good job
- 5:29Speaker 5: of stopping the run. Once you kind of made them one-dimensional,
- 5:33Speaker 5: you could see them gravitate towards the throw game, and
- 5:37Speaker 5: that's when you can start to tee off on them
- 5:39Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 5:41Speaker 4: And that's when you guys dial up that pressure.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I know I asked you about this in the postgame show,
- 5:45Speaker 3: but walk me through the Benny Blitz, one of my
- 5:49Speaker 3: favorite plays of the season, maybe the play of the
- 5:51Speaker 3: season for you guys to this point in time. You're
- 5:53Speaker 3: on the headset. You're probably listening to Colton and the
- 5:55Speaker 3: call that he calls in. So as you're watching that
- 5:58Speaker 3: play unfold, what are you seeing? And maybe you saw
- 6:01Speaker 3: the same thing Colton did when he made that call.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Well, it's a tough pressure to defend, and unless you
- 6:07Speaker 5: recognize it, which a lot of teams do because we
- 6:11Speaker 5: run it every year. We hadn't run it. maybe but
- 6:16Speaker 5: once or twice this year.
- 6:17Speaker 6: Up to this point.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Which is rare.
- 6:19Speaker 6: We normally run it like three times a day.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Yeah, so you're basically bringing four from a side. And
- 6:25Speaker 5: usually in protection, unless you're full sliding to an odd front,
- 6:30Speaker 5: I know I'm speaking like Mandarin Chinese to a bunch
- 6:33Speaker 5: of people, but You're not, brother.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Not to you.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Not to you.
- 6:38Speaker 5: A little bit to me. There's just, you know, usually teams,
- 6:42Speaker 5: you know, when they see an odd front, they're going
- 6:44Speaker 5: to have, you know, a couple ways to protect it.
- 6:48Speaker 5: And it just so happened that in this protection, four
- 6:51Speaker 5: from a side really causes it issues. The backer comes
- 6:54Speaker 5: inside the back. You know, the back is essentially IDing
- 6:58Speaker 5: the linebacker. He takes him inside and Benny comes for you.
- 7:01Speaker 3: You have to have a guy like Benny with his
- 7:03Speaker 3: kind of speed calling for– Well.
- 7:07Speaker 5: It's going to be a defensive back. That's just what
- 7:09Speaker 5: it's called for. And it's usually the nickel. Sometimes it
- 7:12Speaker 5: can be the safety depending.
- 7:13Speaker 6: On your disguise.
- 7:16Speaker 7: In those situations, though, the formation can change. I mean,
- 7:19Speaker 7: for me, when we ran that play, it was you
- 7:22Speaker 7: don't know who's going to come home.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 7:24Speaker 7: Sometimes they can overcompensate and being like, oh, yeah, let's
- 7:29Speaker 7: go get the nickel and forget the D lineman.
- 7:31Speaker 6: That's that's slanting right into the gap. So you got
- 7:33Speaker 6: to run hard.
- 7:34Speaker 7: That's what I love about that is is no matter
- 7:36Speaker 7: where you are in that blitz, don't just think you're
- 7:38Speaker 7: a decoy like you could come home to in that man.
- 7:41Speaker 7: But for me, it was the defensive execution on that
- 7:44Speaker 7: from the setup, as you said, with the odd front
- 7:46Speaker 7: and then sliding over even Lance dropping off into the
- 7:52Speaker 7: his coverage on that, the execution of the team and
- 7:56Speaker 7: of the defense. I mean, I think it was probably
- 7:58Speaker 7: the best game all year by the defense as far
- 8:01Speaker 7: as the level of execution. My other question came to
- 8:05Speaker 7: the couple of gaffes that we had on the defense side.
- 8:07Speaker 6: Of the ball.
- 8:08Speaker 7: I heard you in the press conference talk about communication
- 8:12Speaker 7: issues and some of those things which I saw was
- 8:16Speaker 7: it's a simple like, hey, are we comboing this or not?
- 8:18Speaker 6: And then we left the guy. So how... easy is
- 8:22Speaker 6: that to clean up, or.
- 8:23Speaker 7: Is that something that is more difficult, and how do
- 8:27Speaker 7: you clean that up?
- 8:29Speaker 5: It's just a matter of understanding who is the voice.
- 8:36Speaker 5: You know, in combo coverage, whether you're working a tandem
- 8:41Speaker 5: set or you're working a cluster with three, the point
- 8:46Speaker 5: always is the communicator. And so, if you get maybe
- 8:50Speaker 5: the guy that's off the ball thinking he's communicating, then
- 8:56Speaker 5: all of a sudden confusion at the snap, and then
- 8:59Speaker 5: you don't after that.
- 9:01Speaker 6: So there's a Trump voice.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Yes.
- 9:03Speaker 6: Who trumps over somebody else's voice.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Yeah, and so unfortunately that happens.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Is that harder with different position groups?
- 9:11Speaker 5: Well, what you're trying not to do is involve a
- 9:14Speaker 5: linebacker in some of that stuff.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Why not?
- 9:17Speaker 6: They can cover.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Oh, hell no. To an extent, you bet.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Limited coverage.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Yeah, the hardest, you know, obviously it's when things are
- 9:28Speaker 5: happening with motion and all that. But, I mean, it's
- 9:34Speaker 5: something that we've dealt with every single year. And, yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 5: it should not be that hard.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So what did you guys figure out? I know you
- 9:42Speaker 3: joke about this all the time, halftime adjustments. You're adjusting
- 9:45Speaker 3: all the time. But you didn't score in the first half.
- 9:47Speaker 3: You're down 3-0. You're going into the locker room. You
- 9:49Speaker 3: missed that field goal at the end of the first half.
- 9:52Speaker 3: What did you guys figure out in that second half?
- 9:54Speaker 3: Houston's defense, I know everybody talked about their offense.
- 9:56Speaker 4: They had a good defense, too. They were a really
- 9:58Speaker 4: good defense.
- 9:59Speaker 3: So a low-scoring game surprised some of us a little bit,
- 10:02Speaker 3: but when you look at the defenses, maybe it shouldn't have.
- 10:04Speaker 3: So what did you guys figure out that kind of
- 10:07Speaker 3: unlocked the offense a little bit in that second half?
- 10:09Speaker 5: Well, it was obvious they were trying to take away
- 10:12Speaker 5: Wayshawn and force Devin to pull it. They were overloading
- 10:18Speaker 5: the offset backside and You know, sometimes that works, sometimes
- 10:22Speaker 5: it doesn't. But our offense did a really good job
- 10:26Speaker 5: at halftime of, okay, let's run a little bit more
- 10:29Speaker 5: gap scheme. Let's get away from the zone read stuff.
- 10:34Speaker 5: And then maybe a little bit more triple option where
- 10:36Speaker 5: you have the option to pitch. And, you know, with
- 10:41Speaker 5: the different sets that we have with our rhinos and
- 10:43Speaker 5: stuff like that, you don't know who's going to... A
- 10:45Speaker 5: wide receiver, Creed Whitmore, could be the pitch guy. So
- 10:48Speaker 5: that was... Really good on the offense's part is going
- 10:51Speaker 5: back to a little bit of that. And then Devin,
- 10:54Speaker 5: you know, realizing. It's open. Yeah. And, I mean, shoot,
- 11:01Speaker 5: that guy, what, 150? Yeah, 150. He ran for. He's
- 11:04Speaker 5: such a competitor. And he's like, okay, fine, forget it.
- 11:09Speaker 5: I'll do this.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Third best rushing day by a Utah quarterback all time.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Who has the first 10?
- 11:14Speaker 5: Alex Smith.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Oh, bird fic one.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Oh, hey, yeah. Baylor, right?
- 11:20Speaker 4: Yeah, Baylor.
- 11:21Speaker 5: And what was his first start? Was it Colorado?
- 11:24Speaker 4: Yep.
- 11:24Speaker 5: There you go.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 3: So, yeah, Burt, that top three rushing games all time
- 11:28Speaker 3: by Utah quarterbacks.
- 11:30Speaker 5: I was going to say, you got Snoop, maybe. I
- 11:32Speaker 5: don't know. Who else is up there?
- 11:34Speaker 4: Travis. Travis Wilson.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Travis Wilson. Got a couple.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Then, of course, the famous Brett Ratliff 112-yard game using
- 11:40Speaker 4: his legs against BYU. Oh, man, that's BYU, yeah. Back
- 11:43Speaker 4: in 2005. But anyway, you're right. Devin Unlockett.
- 11:45Speaker 7: What?
- 11:46Speaker 3: We ask this every week, but after a game like this,
- 11:49Speaker 3: I think you can probably have a fresh answer.
- 11:51Speaker 4: What did you take away? What did you learn from
- 11:53Speaker 4: your team? What did you learn about your team in
- 11:55Speaker 4: a highly.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Competitive, hyped scenario in contest against the top 15 team
- 12:04Speaker 3: on Saturday night?
- 12:05Speaker 5: They were able to handle the emotions. What was fun
- 12:11Speaker 5: was turning on the tape. Usually, you see guys try
- 12:13Speaker 5: and do too much. And so technique suffers. Man, was
- 12:18Speaker 5: there awesome technique.
- 12:19Speaker 6: Control of games.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Oh, it was awesome. And that's what we said, you know, pregame,
- 12:24Speaker 5: a controlled violence. Don't do more than your own your
- 12:26Speaker 5: 20 square feet. Do your job. Give everything you got.
- 12:31Speaker 5: You know, we knew it was going to be a
- 12:34Speaker 5: physical game, and our guys brought it. I was so
- 12:36Speaker 5: proud of them. The way you watch the offensive line
- 12:38Speaker 5: run down the field and finish, we call it friendly fire,
- 12:42Speaker 5: you know. We say, God will bless Friendly Fire. Just
- 12:46Speaker 5: push your guys, you know. But, yeah, to turn on
- 12:52Speaker 5: that film, there were so many clips where you're like, yes, okay,
- 12:57Speaker 5: that's the culture.
- 12:58Speaker 6: That's it, boys. Was that Friendly Fire for Noah Binney
- 13:00Speaker 6: after the touchdown? How about that?
- 13:03Speaker 5: That was, bless his heart, that was just a... craziest
- 13:07Speaker 5: thing in the world. He's like, I just, man, I
- 13:09Speaker 5: blanked out. I thought that was my teammate. I was celebrating.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Well, that's what we thought up in the booth when
- 13:13Speaker 4: we watched the replay.
- 13:15Speaker 5: And the guy does a pretty good job of kind
- 13:16Speaker 5: of selling the jersey tug.
- 13:19Speaker 3: But if you know Noah Benny, he was just wanting
- 13:21Speaker 3: to celebrate a touchdown. There's not any ill will in that.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Oh, I had no idea what was going on. I
- 13:26Speaker 5: was livid. I'm like, what are we doing? And then
- 13:29Speaker 5: I watched the film. I'm like, you've got to be
- 13:31Speaker 5: kidding me. Crazy.
- 13:34Speaker 7: Um, I wanted to ask about that, that controlled, uh,
- 13:38Speaker 7: or how to handle guys like a Devin Dampierre. Like
- 13:42Speaker 7: when you see them kind of in the zone, right? Like, um,
- 13:45Speaker 7: how do you just understand when to like, Hey, stay within,
- 13:50Speaker 7: or just go do you like, like when Weddle would
- 13:53Speaker 7: do his thing, you just know that he just knew
- 13:55Speaker 7: what was going on. He could feel like I play
- 13:56Speaker 7: with Troy and I'm just like, that's not what was called,
- 13:59Speaker 7: but I know, you know what to do. Um, how
- 14:01Speaker 7: do you, to coach that with guys of that caliber
- 14:05Speaker 7: and just know that they can go get it done?
- 14:09Speaker 5: Well, I think it is all pre, it's seeing it
- 14:16Speaker 5: in practice. It's gaining that level of trust to say, okay,
- 14:23Speaker 5: I'm not going to handcuff this guy. He's already proven
- 14:25Speaker 5: that we will live with Good or bad. Yeah, we'll
- 14:33Speaker 5: live with the bad because the good is so good.
- 14:36Speaker 5: And 90% of the time, it's good.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Let's grab our first time out here at the Coaches
- 14:40Speaker 3: Show tonight. We'll come back, talk about some big-picture program stuff.

- 15:43Speaker 3: at 7-0. Trying to stay that way.
- 15:46Speaker 4: We have seen chaos all over college football.
- 15:48Speaker 3: There's only three remaining unbeatens. You guys are one of them, Morgan,
- 15:51Speaker 3: but We've seen a lot, and it happens every year.
- 15:54Speaker 3: It's not just this year, but you get a big
- 15:57Speaker 3: win one weekend, and then you go on the road
- 16:00Speaker 3: or you play another opponent, and then maybe you don't
- 16:02Speaker 3: give that same type effort. It's the million-dollar question, but
- 16:06Speaker 3: I'll ask you, how do you try to guard against that?
- 16:09Speaker 3: How do you try and flush that big win and
- 16:11Speaker 3: turn that attention solely on what's next?
- 16:15Speaker 5: Don't talk about the win all that much afterwards. You
- 16:20Speaker 5: want to celebrate it because they're hard to come by And,
- 16:24Speaker 5: but you know, you see it all over college football.
- 16:27Speaker 6: I think you remind them.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Of, of, you know, of that, that anyone can beat anyone.
- 16:31Speaker 5: It's that, I think it's just the consistent messaging. If
- 16:33Speaker 5: we hadn't been doing this since week one, I think, okay,
- 16:39Speaker 5: you know, and then they would probably sense it, but
- 16:42Speaker 5: because it's been consistent, like all we got to focus
- 16:45Speaker 5: on is this opponent. They're our championship. They're all that matters. And, uh,
- 16:51Speaker 5: And you have to have mature enough leadership to quell
- 16:58Speaker 5: and squash the rest in the locker room, you know,
- 17:01Speaker 5: and lead by example. And we've got some really good leaders.
- 17:06Speaker 7: Man, that's always the hard part, too, because it's just like,
- 17:12Speaker 7: how do you measure, you know, guys' mentalities going into, like, okay,
- 17:18Speaker 7: Cincinnati just upset Texas Tech, right?
- 17:22Speaker 6: They're still looming, right?
- 17:23Speaker 7: Like, okay, yeah, we just had a great win, but
- 17:24Speaker 7: we're going into another aggressive.
- 17:30Speaker 6: Place. So how do you get those guys.
- 17:32Speaker 7: Aside from the leaders in there, how do you keep
- 17:36Speaker 7: them staying focused on the task at hand? I know
- 17:39Speaker 7: you just alluded to the consistent messaging, but.
- 17:45Speaker 6: That's not everybody, right?
- 17:47Speaker 7: How do we get everybody from the scout team and
- 17:50Speaker 7: on down from the staff, the equipment staff, everybody to
- 17:53Speaker 7: lock in on understanding what's next?
- 17:57Speaker 5: We've got to provide clarity on what we're looking for,
- 18:01Speaker 5: what we want, what we need, what can't happen. Hold
- 18:05Speaker 5: them accountable to it. You can't be afraid of hard conversations.
- 18:09Speaker 5: You can't be afraid to hold people accountable if they
- 18:14Speaker 5: came today and they weren't ready to practice. okay, what's
- 18:17Speaker 5: going on, boys?
- 18:19Speaker 6: You know?
- 18:20Speaker 5: And then, you know, all the support we can give them.
- 18:26Speaker 5: You can show example after example of teams that, you know,
- 18:32Speaker 5: they have a letdown after a big win, and I
- 18:35Speaker 5: don't sense at all a lack of focus or concentration. And,
- 18:42Speaker 5: you know, but if we did, it's like, you've got
- 18:43Speaker 5: to be able to call that out when you see it.
- 18:45Speaker 5: And Not be afraid to call it out. No question.
- 18:50Speaker 5: No matter who it is. Devin came to practice today
- 18:53Speaker 5: and he wasn't ready to go. He wasn't focused. Okay, well,
- 18:57Speaker 5: I can let that go, but then I'm permitting.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Opening the door.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm basically advertising to everyone else, oh, the culture
- 19:04Speaker 5: only matters. It doesn't matter right now to him. No,
- 19:09Speaker 5: you've got to be able to call everyone out. Devin Lloyd,
- 19:13Speaker 5: senior year, has a horrible day on punt. you know,
- 19:18Speaker 5: I remember that one.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:20Speaker 5: And, and we pulled up the film and defensive unit
- 19:22Speaker 5: room says, what's this? You want to answer to all
- 19:26Speaker 5: your teammates, what that is, you know, basically him loafing and,
- 19:31Speaker 5: and just like a mature leader got up guys, that's
- 19:34Speaker 5: not me. That you won't ever see that again. You know,
- 19:38Speaker 5: didn't know bad body language, nothing, but send a message
- 19:42Speaker 5: to everyone else. Hey, I don't care who you are. Freshman, walk-on,
- 19:46Speaker 5: fifth-year senior, going to be a draft pick.
- 19:48Speaker 6: First round.
- 19:48Speaker 5: Hey, the standard. is the standard.
- 19:51Speaker 4: And I would guess, too, the fact that.
- 19:53Speaker 3: The opponent you're playing this week just had a monumental
- 19:57Speaker 3: win themselves last weekend.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:59Speaker 4: You know, you say a lot of things, but guys
- 20:01Speaker 4: recognize that, too. They see it.
- 20:03Speaker 3: They just beat the number eight team who beat us
- 20:05Speaker 3: a year ago or the defending conference champions, so If
- 20:09Speaker 3: they didn't have our attention already, now they should.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 5: You don't think these guys are motivated? You don't think
- 20:15Speaker 5: they are probably pulling up film from last year saying, okay,
- 20:21Speaker 5: they want revenge. This is our game, and we get it.
- 20:24Speaker 5: But you've got to play the game. So we're fired up.
- 20:29Speaker 5: It's going to be Halloween. Love that atmosphere, environment. You
- 20:35Speaker 5: love playing in front of a crazy crowd. and uh
- 20:38Speaker 5: i mean they're well coached satterfield does such a good
- 20:40Speaker 5: job with that with that crew and um i mean
- 20:44Speaker 5: you lose sorsby and the offensive skill that they lost
- 20:47Speaker 5: and it's like they haven't skipped a beat.
- 20:50Speaker 7: Um one thing that i love about uh this team
- 20:54Speaker 7: really is of course the depth i actually love our
- 20:56Speaker 7: linebacker rotation i don't think we've rotated the way that
- 20:59Speaker 7: these linebackers are rotating right now it's good mix of
- 21:02Speaker 7: of who's in there it's awesome but offensively um I
- 21:07Speaker 7: think Saturday was just an awesome showcase of our depth, right,
- 21:10Speaker 7: and understanding.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Do you want to take Wayshawn away? Okay.
- 21:13Speaker 7: We got all these other intangibles going on. What is
- 21:15Speaker 7: that next step in this offense? What is something that,
- 21:20Speaker 7: you know, this offense wants to do? We're averaging 37
- 21:23Speaker 7: points a game right now, and, you know, last two games,
- 21:26Speaker 7: the outputs kind of, you know, hindered that. But is
- 21:28Speaker 7: that something where we're looking? The confidence that we showed
- 21:31Speaker 7: in that second half is kind of what I'm getting at.
- 21:33Speaker 7: Is that something that we can foresee in the future?
- 21:37Speaker 7: Or is that just game flow?
- 21:38Speaker 5: Well, I would hope so. You know, what builds confidence?
- 21:44Speaker 4: Winning.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Success. Yeah, but doing it over and over and over again.
- 21:49Speaker 5: That's what I tell guys. Swagger is just fate. It's earned.
- 21:57Speaker 5: You don't all of a sudden show up on game
- 21:59Speaker 5: day and talk trash and act tough.
- 22:02Speaker 2: No.
- 22:03Speaker 5: You either earn it or you don't. And that's how
- 22:06Speaker 5: you practice. It's how you lift. And it's going to
- 22:10Speaker 5: show up. For good or for bad, it's going to
- 22:12Speaker 5: be exposed. And so either you're preparing and doing it
- 22:16Speaker 5: the right way, or someone who's hungrier than you is
- 22:20Speaker 5: going to make you pay. So, you know, it's either
- 22:26Speaker 5: get the work done or you don't.
- 22:28Speaker 3: We'll talk in depth in the last segment about Cincinnati,
- 22:31Speaker 3: but we've talked– a couple of times here about them
- 22:34Speaker 3: knocking off. And if you watched the final score and
- 22:37Speaker 3: didn't watch the football game, the game was not as
- 22:39Speaker 3: close as that final score. They took it to Texas
- 22:42Speaker 3: Tech last weekend. As you put on the tape, you
- 22:45Speaker 3: like Scott Satterfield a lot. It's the team you guys
- 22:47Speaker 3: beat here last year. But what stands out about this
- 22:51Speaker 3: Cincinnati team this year versus the one you played a
- 22:54Speaker 3: year ago?
- 22:55Speaker 5: Man, I think they're better on the offensive front. Their
- 22:58Speaker 5: offensive line is really good. Offensive line is good.
- 23:01Speaker 4: They returned more. Most of those guys, I think, from
- 23:03Speaker 4: a year ago.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Quarterback's efficient. Completion percentage really good. Makes quick decisions. Different tempos,
- 23:13Speaker 5: they'll tempo you. And they know what we do. It's
- 23:19Speaker 5: a really good chess match. I guess they're going to
- 23:22Speaker 5: tempo us and huddle, speed to the line, scrimmage, stuff
- 23:26Speaker 5: like that. But At the end of the day, you've
- 23:32Speaker 5: got to be you.
- 23:33Speaker 7: This is going to be our first time that we
- 23:35Speaker 7: get to see you kind of on the road, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 7: skipping time zone. Is that as big of a thing
- 23:40Speaker 7: as it is, or is that something that– what complications
- 23:44Speaker 7: does it bring going to an Eastern time zone city?
- 23:48Speaker 5: I mean, the change in, you know, obviously Eastern time
- 23:53Speaker 5: zone to our difference– you know, you got to get
- 23:56Speaker 5: your guys to bed on time. You're waking up, you've
- 23:59Speaker 5: been 8 PM mountain time the last two weeks. And,
- 24:04Speaker 5: and really it's about hydrating and eating the right way. And, and,
- 24:09Speaker 5: you know, not skipping that clock. There's, you know, certain
- 24:14Speaker 5: clock that you want in terms of when you eat
- 24:16Speaker 5: and hydrate so that you're ready for the game. It's
- 24:19Speaker 5: going to come into play, you know, the earlier games
- 24:23Speaker 5: as well. So, Our nutrition staff does a really good job,
- 24:26Speaker 5: our strength staff, just adjusting how we travel. And it's
- 24:33Speaker 5: not as big of a deal, I think, as you
- 24:35Speaker 5: think it is. It's probably a bigger deal to come
- 24:38Speaker 5: to elevation. I saw that at Houston.
- 24:43Speaker 6: I felt like they were grasping for air.
- 24:45Speaker 5: Right.
- 24:45Speaker 7: I saw a lot of hands on hips, man. And
- 24:47Speaker 7: that's why I was just like, is that.
- 24:48Speaker 6: Blood in the water?
- 24:49Speaker 5: Is that the tech mode right there? It definitely can be, yeah.
- 24:52Speaker 6: If you.
- 24:53Speaker 5: If you recognize that.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Yeah, the weather, by the way, Saturday is supposed to
- 24:57Speaker 3: be an ideal day. I think it's supposed to be
- 24:58Speaker 3: about 70 degrees and mostly sunny skies at Nippert Stadium.
- 25:02Speaker 3: So two time zones, yes, a little bit early, but
- 25:04Speaker 3: the game's smack dab in the middle of the afternoon, too.
- 25:06Speaker 3: So it's not early. It's not late. It's just kind
- 25:09Speaker 3: of right there in the middle, which in some ways
- 25:12Speaker 3: is good. You don't have to sit around the hotel
- 25:13Speaker 3: all day long. You can do a little bit of
- 25:15Speaker 3: a normal morning routine and then head over to the stadium.
- 25:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Yeah, our guys have done it before, the majority of them.
- 25:24Speaker 4: And you coach it up, so it should be fun.
- 25:27Speaker 3: And it will be just the second all-time meeting between
- 25:30Speaker 3: the University of Utah and the Cincinnati Bearcats coming up
- 25:33Speaker 3: on Saturday at Nippert Stadium. By the way, our coaching
- 25:36Speaker 3: show tonight being brought to you by Smith's, fresh for everyone,
- 25:38Speaker 3: a proud sponsor of University of Utah football, and by
- 25:41Speaker 3: our friends at Pepsi. Grab a Pepsi Zero Sugar and
- 25:44Speaker 3: enjoy watching Utah football all season long.
- 25:48Speaker 4: I think we'll grab a timeout. Is it Daniel Bray
- 25:51Speaker 4: that's going to join us first?
- 25:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:53Speaker 7: Man.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I was so proud of him. Dan, give us a
- 25:56Speaker 4: quick thought on Daniel.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Well, Weishan had to come out, and we had a
- 26:03Speaker 5: play that's in between the tackle play. Weishan's the only
- 26:06Speaker 5: one that's been running it. Bray really didn't even practice
- 26:12Speaker 5: the cadence. The fact that it even got snapped was... Shock.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yeah. But....
- 26:19Speaker 5: Gosh, dang it, did he hit that thing multiple times
- 26:24Speaker 5: in between the tackles. I was so proud of him.
- 26:26Speaker 5: He shot through there, kept his feet. He's gotten so
- 26:30Speaker 5: much better at just running physical. He's not the biggest
- 26:35Speaker 5: dude in the world. He's not going to 30 carries
- 26:39Speaker 5: inside the tackles, but I was just so proud of him.
- 26:41Speaker 5: He's a weapon. He's fast. He can catch the ball.
- 26:45Speaker 5: He's a guy that easily could be a me guy
- 26:53Speaker 5: upset about his touches and this and that, and he
- 26:56Speaker 5: just gets in there and owns it. Love it.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I tell Sly all the time, I always feel like
- 27:02Speaker 3: Daniel Bray.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Is a step away from going to D.C. He is.
- 27:04Speaker 5: It was almost having a kickoff return.
- 27:06Speaker 6: I know.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Like one block away from going.
- 27:08Speaker 3: He's done it a couple of times in his career,
- 27:10Speaker 3: but I always feel like he's so close every time
- 27:14Speaker 3: he gets that edge. So we'll talk to Daniel Bray
- 27:16Speaker 3: coming up next here on The Coach's Show, presented by Smiths,
- 27:18Speaker 3: right here from ESPN 700 and the Ute Sports Radio Network.
- 27:22Speaker 1: You're listening to Utah Football, brought to you by Pepsi
- 27:26Speaker 1: on ESPN 700 and the Ute Sports Network.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Back on the Coach's Show tonight here at the Echols
- 27:42Speaker 3: Football Building, Bill Riley, Stevenson Sylvester, and Utah running back
- 27:48Speaker 3: Daniel Bray joining us in here, coming off a nice
- 27:50Speaker 3: win and a nice performance. Coach was just telling us
- 27:54Speaker 3: you had to step in for Weishan on that direct
- 27:57Speaker 3: snap in that game the other day. He said you
- 28:00Speaker 3: hadn't practiced it much, wasn't sure about the cadence, but
- 28:04Speaker 3: your number got called.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Walk us through that play, Daniel.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Yeah, Weishan needed a breather.
- 28:11Speaker 8: And from watching Coach Kami give Wayshawn the signal and
- 28:15Speaker 8: preparation of them doing it every day of practice, all week,
- 28:19Speaker 8: and me just watching it, I just, I guess when
- 28:21Speaker 8: I got in the moment, I.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Just instantly knew what to do.
- 28:24Speaker 8: Now, cadence-wise, I mean, I just, I hear the quarterbacks
- 28:29Speaker 8: say the cadence. So I just did my best and
- 28:32Speaker 8: did a regular counter. Just counter two pullers, be patient,
- 28:36Speaker 8: and that's really how it happened.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Show us how you called it. Give us an example.
- 28:41Speaker 3: When you stepped back there, how did you call that play?
- 28:44Speaker 8: As I was coming in motion, I was, here we go.
- 28:48Speaker 8: And then when I get set, it's set, set, ready, go.
- 28:52Speaker 8: But It was supposed to be a pause after set, set,
- 28:54Speaker 8: but I was so in the moment and so ready.
- 28:56Speaker 8: I just said, set, set, ready, go, and it snapped.
- 28:59Speaker 8: And Al got it to you? Yeah, Al got it
- 29:00Speaker 8: to me. Then right after when he came, he picked
- 29:03Speaker 8: me up.
- 29:03Speaker 2: After I got it, he said, we.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Need to work on that cadence.
- 29:07Speaker 2: But, yeah, it felt good.
- 29:10Speaker 7: Is that the type of player that you kind of
- 29:12Speaker 7: see yourself as? It's like, look, whatever it is, just
- 29:15Speaker 7: ask me to do. I'm going to be ready to go.
- 29:19Speaker 7: It seems like you actually love the game of football.
- 29:23Speaker 7: but just watching you out there is just so inspirational, man. But, like,
- 29:27Speaker 7: in plays and situations like that, is it just put
- 29:30Speaker 7: me in, I'm going to make it happen?
- 29:31Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 29:32Speaker 8: Whatever it is, kick return, punt return, corner, safety, wherever
- 29:37Speaker 8: they need me, if they need me to do something,
- 29:39Speaker 8: I'm going to go do it.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And I'm going to try my best. So wherever.
- 29:42Speaker 8: But, yeah, I absolutely want to be a playmaker wherever
- 29:44Speaker 8: I can.
- 29:45Speaker 3: This seems like a really fun offense to be a
- 29:48Speaker 3: part of. What do you love about Coach McGiven's offense?
- 29:52Speaker 8: The versatility, like rhinos can catch the ball, semi, CNA.
- 29:58Speaker 8: Like anything, way Sean in the backfield at quarterback or
- 30:01Speaker 8: I go in the backfield.
- 30:02Speaker 2: At quarterback, just anything. You'll be surprised.
- 30:05Speaker 8: Bird at receiver, bird come in motion, double pass, just anything.
- 30:09Speaker 2: It's very fun to be in.
- 30:11Speaker 7: What can you see this team as, right? Like what
- 30:14Speaker 7: is your vision for how this is? I know there's
- 30:16Speaker 7: aspirations and all that stuff. I don't want to look ahead,
- 30:19Speaker 7: but like when you were in the spring and you
- 30:22Speaker 7: saw this team in training camp, you're like, man, we
- 30:24Speaker 7: could be really good. And versus now we're week seven
- 30:27Speaker 7: and we're like, oh, That's a thought. What was your
- 30:30Speaker 7: impressions of this team and how far they can go?
- 30:34Speaker 8: Well, as when we started the culture thing, when Coach
- 30:37Speaker 8: Galley started bringing in culture, I seen like a bond
- 30:41Speaker 8: or like a bond that people were just, everybody was
- 30:44Speaker 8: getting way closer. Everybody was clicking. Yeah, everybody was clicking.
- 30:47Speaker 8: And we was just like, it just felt different than
- 30:50Speaker 8: the year before. And I could just feel everybody getting closer.
- 30:53Speaker 8: And I was like, you could definitely feel the difference there.
- 30:56Speaker 8: everything so i just like okay like and the goal
- 31:00Speaker 8: is of course a championship and and i feel like
- 31:02Speaker 8: it's very achievable and we're on the way to do that.
- 31:05Speaker 3: They ask you to do a lot of things you
- 31:07Speaker 3: got the direct snap the other day you line up
- 31:10Speaker 3: you'll take a handoff you'll go in fly motion you'll
- 31:13Speaker 3: get a pop pass sometimes it's orbit motion and a
- 31:15Speaker 3: pitch from dev or a handoff from dev what's your
- 31:19Speaker 3: favorite what when when you hear a play come in
- 31:22Speaker 3: and you know there's a possibility what's if daniel if
- 31:25Speaker 3: Better yet, if Coach Mack came to you and said,
- 31:27Speaker 3: all right, Daniel, what's your favorite play?
- 31:29Speaker 4: We're going to call it and run it for you.
- 31:31Speaker 4: What do you love? What's your favorite thing?
- 31:34Speaker 8: My favorite thing would be countering, just regular running back counter.
- 31:38Speaker 8: Or we've got to play Buddha regular, like outside zone
- 31:42Speaker 8: with a roll back. But definitely no motion and nothing,
- 31:45Speaker 8: just in the backfield. I don't got to run before
- 31:48Speaker 8: the snap and get tired. Something where I'm just right
- 31:51Speaker 8: next to Devin, just two pullers and go.
- 31:54Speaker 6: Man, it looked like you could run all day, though.
- 31:56Speaker 6: Are you the fastest guy on the team?
- 31:57Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely.
- 31:59Speaker 8: I mean, it's probably close to Ricky, BP, and they're quick,
- 32:04Speaker 8: but I think I got it definitely.
- 32:06Speaker 6: Do y'all race anymore?
- 32:07Speaker 5: No.
- 32:07Speaker 6: We use the race all the time.
- 32:09Speaker 2: No, no races.
- 32:10Speaker 8: No races, but we're definitely all competitive. Ricky say the fastest,
- 32:13Speaker 8: BP say the fastest, but... I know I'm the fastest.
- 32:17Speaker 3: I'm going to throw somebody else in there at least
- 32:19Speaker 3: in a 20-yard sprint. Jackson Benny looked like the fastest
- 32:22Speaker 3: man on the field on that blitz Saturday.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Yeah, he's explosive. Benny's explosive. I don't know.
- 32:27Speaker 8: He's sneaky fast. He doesn't look fast, but he's definitely quick.
- 32:31Speaker 8: So Benny's probably up there too. Yeah, he's very explosive.
- 32:34Speaker 3: So you guys have had such a good year, but
- 32:37Speaker 3: you're in the middle of now the games. Houston last week,
- 32:41Speaker 3: Cincinnati this week. BYU, I mean, it's just now it's
- 32:45Speaker 3: week after week. As a group, I know the coaches try,
- 32:49Speaker 3: but as a group, how do you guys keep your
- 32:51Speaker 3: focus laser focused on just that next game and not
- 32:54Speaker 3: that outside noise?
- 32:56Speaker 8: We come in, so we have Sundays off. We come
- 32:59Speaker 8: in Monday, and instantly that game's behind us. We're on
- 33:03Speaker 8: preparation for the next week. We don't talk about what
- 33:05Speaker 8: happened last week. We watch that film, get over it
- 33:07Speaker 8: after that film is over.
- 33:09Speaker 2: We're over it.
- 33:10Speaker 8: We're in preparation for the next team, and we focus, practice, details, nothing.
- 33:14Speaker 8: We don't talk about anything from last week. We just
- 33:16Speaker 8: move on. And then, yeah, that's really just how we
- 33:20Speaker 8: do it and get over the win, celebrate the win,
- 33:23Speaker 8: of course, and then just get over and move on
- 33:25Speaker 8: to the next.
- 33:25Speaker 4: And I'm going to guess, too, the chaos we've seen
- 33:28Speaker 4: in college football this year, when you flip on the
- 33:30Speaker 4: sports center after the game, you're like, okay, anything can
- 33:34Speaker 4: happen on a given day. We better stay focused.
- 33:36Speaker 8: Yeah, definitely need to stay focused. Like Coach Scali said,
- 33:40Speaker 8: winning is hard. Winning is definitely hard, but I feel
- 33:44Speaker 8: like we prepare pretty good and lock in and focus, and, yeah,
- 33:50Speaker 8: we get the job done.
- 33:51Speaker 6: Man, we talked about your versatility, right?
- 33:54Speaker 7: You know, from the running back position, now wildcat position,
- 33:58Speaker 7: receiver position. What is– what would you say a perfect
- 34:03Speaker 7: game is? Like, so I played linebacker, right? So me,
- 34:06Speaker 7: I would be like double-digit tackles. couple sacks and a pick.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Oh is that it oh that's it basically.
- 34:13Speaker 3: Your sugar bowl what you did all that in the
- 34:16Speaker 3: sugar bowl.
- 34:16Speaker 7: What is a perfect game for you uh if you
- 34:20Speaker 7: could if you could lay out your stats on what
- 34:22Speaker 7: a perfect game would be what would.
- 34:23Speaker 8: That be uh winning as long winning as long as
- 34:28Speaker 8: we win i fight because the perfect game as long
- 34:31Speaker 8: as we get the win i mean of course i
- 34:33Speaker 8: love to get it in zone get a couple yards
- 34:35Speaker 8: do it but anyway i can contribute to a win
- 34:38Speaker 8: is is what i'll say a perfect game.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Is before we let you go just a thought on
- 34:43Speaker 3: going to cincinnati this weekend and playing the bearcats who
- 34:46Speaker 3: are coming off a big win against tech last.
- 34:48Speaker 8: Weekend um i mean they got a pretty solid defense
- 34:53Speaker 8: they run they got a lot of deep a lot
- 34:55Speaker 8: of safeties back there i mean they're a good team
- 34:58Speaker 8: they're a pretty good team i just feel like We
- 35:02Speaker 8: have to go in prepared, not thinking, nothing, no less
- 35:06Speaker 8: than any opponent.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Just go in with the mindset to win.
- 35:09Speaker 6: Excellent.
- 35:09Speaker 4: Well, thanks for coming by tonight, Daniel.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 35:12Speaker 4: I know you've got to get home and get some
- 35:13Speaker 4: stuff done tonight, so we'll let you get going, and
- 35:15Speaker 4: we'll see you on Saturday.
- 35:15Speaker 6: Get on that duty.
- 35:17Speaker 4: All right.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Daniel Bray with us on The Coaches Show, which is
- 35:20Speaker 3: brought to us by our friends at AAA. We're a
- 35:22Speaker 3: proud sponsor of Utah football. Visit your nearest AAA branch,
- 35:25Speaker 3: DMV services, insurance quotes, travel planning, exclusive member discounts, and
- 35:30Speaker 3: so much more. Discover all the benefits of AAA and
- 35:33Speaker 3: enjoy the game. We'll come back and flip to the
- 35:35Speaker 3: defensive side. Jai Mo will join us coming up right
- 35:38Speaker 3: here from ESPN 700 and the Ute Sports Radio Network.
- 35:43Speaker 1: You're listening to Utah Football brought to you by Bamboo
- 35:46Speaker 1: HR on ESPN 700 and the Ute Sports Network.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Back on the Coaches Show presented by Smith, another player
- 35:55Speaker 3: spotlight here tonight. This time we go on the defensive
- 35:58Speaker 3: side of the ball. He was one of the guys
- 36:00Speaker 3: they went out and grabbed in the portal this past year,
- 36:02Speaker 3: wanted to really firm up those defensive tackles, and boy,
- 36:05Speaker 3: he has been better than advertised.
- 36:08Speaker 4: Jai Mo with us here on the show tonight. How
- 36:10Speaker 4: are you?
- 36:10Speaker 2: Still good, man.
- 36:12Speaker 4: When you committed to Utah, what did you expect?
- 36:17Speaker 3: And now that you've been here for 9, 10 months,
- 36:20Speaker 3: 11 months, how's it been?
- 36:22Speaker 9: It's been amazing, man. Truly blessed to be here. I
- 36:25Speaker 9: expected Utah to be everything that it is right now.
- 36:30Speaker 9: The standards higher, we're a winning team, and just the culture.
- 36:35Speaker 9: There's a lot of love over here, genuine, and just
- 36:37Speaker 9: our coach, Scali, preaches RS & B. Just keeping us
- 36:41Speaker 9: accountable to RS & B, holding that standard, and achieving
- 36:44Speaker 9: it every day.
- 36:45Speaker 7: Man, talk about kind of your progression through the depth chart, right?
- 36:48Speaker 7: Working yourself up and getting that starting position to, you know,
- 36:52Speaker 7: just killing it out there.
- 36:53Speaker 6: Bill and I absolutely love it. We like watch Jai
- 36:56Speaker 6: on this play.
- 36:57Speaker 7: But like talk to when you first got here, you know,
- 36:59Speaker 7: coming out of the portal and then working yourself up
- 37:01Speaker 7: to the top of the depth charts and how that was.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 37:05Speaker 9: The team or the group, the tackle group is talented
- 37:09Speaker 9: players all across the board and just honing in on technique, man.
- 37:14Speaker 9: I know I'm not the biggest or the strongest or
- 37:17Speaker 9: the fastest. It's just honing in on technique and playing
- 37:20Speaker 9: with high effort. And just shout out to the coaching, man.
- 37:23Speaker 9: They helped me get that starting spot, too.
- 37:26Speaker 3: But it's your motor, Jai. It's the motor that really
- 37:29Speaker 3: drives you. Where's that motor and that drive come from?
- 37:33Speaker 9: Just playing with heart. You always hear that saying growing up.
- 37:38Speaker 9: Just play with heart and don't listen to the outside noise.
- 37:42Speaker 9: Coach Ellis always talks about don't listen to the little
- 37:45Speaker 9: voice in your head that's when you're tired, oh, slow
- 37:48Speaker 9: down a little bit.
- 37:49Speaker 6: Nah, you got to overcome it. How has he been?
- 37:52Speaker 2: Coach Ellis?
- 37:53Speaker 6: Yeah, what's his?
- 37:54Speaker 7: Because, you know, of course his history and his resume,
- 37:57Speaker 7: but how has his mentorship been for you?
- 38:00Speaker 9: Man, Coach Ellis, man, I'm super grateful for that guy.
- 38:04Speaker 9: Blessed to be coached by him, for real. And Coach Ellis,
- 38:07Speaker 9: he just demands greatness every day, coming from what? A
- 38:11Speaker 9: person that did it all, played in every single level
- 38:14Speaker 9: of the game. He's just a very detailed man. He
- 38:19Speaker 9: always asks us the why. He always asks us to
- 38:22Speaker 9: ask him, why do we do this, why do we
- 38:24Speaker 9: do that? Just being detailed because the details can make
- 38:27Speaker 9: us go a long way.
- 38:29Speaker 3: So when you commit to Utah, you know the standards high,
- 38:32Speaker 3: you know the program's really good. You probably expected to
- 38:35Speaker 3: play in some games like you played.
- 38:37Speaker 4: In Saturday night.
- 38:38Speaker 9: Sure.
- 38:38Speaker 4: What was that atmosphere? It was a night game. It
- 38:41Speaker 4: was against a ranked team, a really good team.
- 38:43Speaker 3: What was that vibe and that energy like on the
- 38:46Speaker 3: field on Saturday night, John?
- 38:47Speaker 9: Man, just playing that atmosphere is, it's crazy. Sometimes you
- 38:52Speaker 9: came in here, my backers give us a call, but
- 38:56Speaker 9: the atmosphere packed out game, even at night is, it's
- 39:01Speaker 9: just a blessing to play in.
- 39:03Speaker 6: And, uh, we talked to Scali a few weeks ago.
- 39:06Speaker 7: Um, about when they picked you up and he was
- 39:09Speaker 7: just like, you can't believe how overlooked you were, right?
- 39:12Speaker 7: You had the highest win rate, you know, on one-on-one
- 39:14Speaker 7: win rate in the portal. And so I want to
- 39:17Speaker 7: talk to you about kind of your mentality when you
- 39:19Speaker 7: do get that one-on-one because you just had a sack
- 39:21Speaker 7: this past week.
- 39:22Speaker 6: That was incredible, right? We called that and we were
- 39:24Speaker 6: just like, holy smokes, right? You surprised everybody, especially Connor
- 39:28Speaker 6: Wegman when he get hit by his own guy.
- 39:31Speaker 7: Because of you but talk to me about your mentality
- 39:33Speaker 7: when you know like look before the snap you're like
- 39:35Speaker 7: oh shoot okay I got a one-on-one right now so
- 39:39Speaker 7: what goes through your mind when you have that and
- 39:40Speaker 7: then once you have your one-on-ones what's going through your mind.
- 39:44Speaker 9: I just gotta not make it too big or make
- 39:47Speaker 9: it too little I know When you get that feeling,
- 39:50Speaker 9: you just have that feeling. You just got to go win.
- 39:52Speaker 9: Get to the QB by all means necessary and just
- 39:56Speaker 9: that's it. Get to the QB, man.
- 39:58Speaker 3: You were part of the biggest play Saturday night too.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Maybe the biggest play of the season. Blitz off the edge.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Benny's in like a missile. Hits Wegman.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Ball's out.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Did you see the ball come free? Was it just, hey,
- 40:11Speaker 3: you looked up and.
- 40:12Speaker 4: There it was? Walk us through that play.
- 40:15Speaker 9: So that play had to go contain the edge on
- 40:18Speaker 9: the boundary. and right when i make my move made
- 40:21Speaker 9: my move against the tackle i was free then i
- 40:24Speaker 9: see jackson or i see benny just coming in like
- 40:27Speaker 9: a missile like you said and i seen the ball
- 40:29Speaker 9: i was like oh see ball get ball let's go get.
- 40:32Speaker 7: It oh man love it man but uh playing on
- 40:36Speaker 7: this defense you know i played on a very long
- 40:38Speaker 7: time ago very very long time ago and it's just
- 40:40Speaker 7: fun for a place like that and you know we
- 40:42Speaker 7: were just talking about your one-on-ones um what what do
- 40:45Speaker 7: you prefer the one-on-ones or like the twist games right
- 40:48Speaker 7: because Like, for me, I love calling twist games, you know,
- 40:51Speaker 7: from the linebackers, right? And seeing you guys just come
- 40:55Speaker 7: free on that. Like, if they're paying attention to the line,
- 40:57Speaker 7: I always– I moved around a lot. So I try
- 41:00Speaker 7: to get the offensive lineman's attention, and sometimes they forgot
- 41:02Speaker 7: about the person that's right in front of them. So
- 41:04Speaker 7: do you like, you know, twist games where you just
- 41:06Speaker 7: put me in a one-on-one and let me go?
- 41:08Speaker 5: You like Jordan?
- 41:08Speaker 6: Let me just– let me get in a one-on-one and
- 41:10Speaker 6: watch me work. It just depends.
- 41:11Speaker 9: If I'm hot, I'll be like, yes, put me on
- 41:14Speaker 9: a one-on-one. But I like twist a lot because– Either
- 41:18Speaker 9: one of us could be free. Me and my other D-tackle.
- 41:21Speaker 9: Shout out to Carson Kofusi, man. Just selling it and
- 41:28Speaker 9: one of us could be free. Not only me, but
- 41:31Speaker 9: that's all.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Last thing, then we'll cut you loose, John. Big win
- 41:35Speaker 3: last weekend. They're all big games from here on out.
- 41:38Speaker 3: You guys are getting control of your own destiny. How
- 41:40Speaker 3: do you keep it rolling against Cincinnati on Saturday?
- 41:43Speaker 9: We just got to hone in and practice, man. I
- 41:46Speaker 9: believe that practice is Easier than the game. We have
- 41:49Speaker 9: to preparate the right way and just keep on honing in,
- 41:53Speaker 9: honing our technique, preach our culture every single day. And
- 41:57Speaker 9: we had it today. Coach Ellis demanded greatness from us.
- 42:00Speaker 9: So just keep on going.
- 42:02Speaker 4: Well, good luck on Saturday. We'll be there in Cincinnati
- 42:04Speaker 4: with you making another win.
- 42:05Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 42:06Speaker 6: Thank you, guys.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Jaimo with us here on the show tonight, having a
- 42:09Speaker 3: great year at the defensive tackle spot. We'll come back,
- 42:12Speaker 3: wrap it up with Morgan next, get some final thoughts
- 42:14Speaker 3: on Cincinnati coming up. This is Utah football from ESPN
- 42:17Speaker 3: 700 and the Ute Sports Radio Network.
- 42:20Speaker 1: You're listening to Utah football brought to you by Big
- 42:23Speaker 1: O Tires on ESPN 700 and the Ute Sports Network.
- 42:28Speaker 3: U of U Health is a great sponsor of Utah
- 42:30Speaker 3: football and the Coaches Show where you can get the
- 42:32Speaker 3: same great care the Utes trust.
- 42:33Speaker 4: Visit uofuhealth.org slash Utes.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Morgan Scali and the Utes will be in Cincinnati, Ohio
- 42:38Speaker 3: for the first time ever to play the Bearcats who
- 42:41Speaker 3: come off a nice win. Last year, Brendan Sorsby was
- 42:46Speaker 3: one of the hottest quarterbacks in the country, playing great.
- 42:48Speaker 3: You guys did a good job against him. He's obviously gone.
- 42:51Speaker 3: We knew all about that. But they bring in a
- 42:54Speaker 3: new quarterback named J.C.
- 42:55Speaker 4: French.
- 42:56Speaker 3: What are you expecting? What kind of a quarterback does J.C.
- 42:59Speaker 3: French challenge us to see.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Present, you guys?
- 43:01Speaker 5: Very similar. Very similar. He can run the ball, very
- 43:05Speaker 5: efficient running the ball, designed runs, the cue draw, the
- 43:10Speaker 5: You know, in the red zone, they'll show some Q
- 43:13Speaker 5: run game as well.
- 43:15Speaker 6: But he can throw it.
- 43:16Speaker 5: Very talented. You know, he transferred. I can't remember where
- 43:19Speaker 5: he transferred from.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Georgia Southern, I think.
- 43:20Speaker 5: But he had all these records while there. So they
- 43:24Speaker 5: did a really good job scouting that one out. Good
- 43:26Speaker 5: run game, wide receivers. So, I mean, shoot, you look
- 43:31Speaker 5: at where they're ranked in the Big 12 and in
- 43:32Speaker 5: the country, really, in major statistical categories, they're doing really well.
- 43:38Speaker 6: How much does environment matter? Do you guys do research
- 43:42Speaker 6: on environment? Like, is this really rowdy, really loud?
- 43:45Speaker 7: Can we communicate or like, do you guys really look
- 43:47Speaker 7: into that? Um, and from that perspective, have you looked
- 43:51Speaker 7: into Cincinnati and what that'll be?
- 43:53Speaker 6: What's that like?
- 43:53Speaker 5: Cause we have no history there. So you always look
- 43:57Speaker 5: into it. You know, what are they averaging in terms
- 44:00Speaker 5: of home attendance? They obviously sold out the last one,
- 44:02Speaker 5: I think just above 50. It's close to our, yeah,
- 44:05Speaker 5: it's very similar capacity. Um, And, you know, just asking around,
- 44:10Speaker 5: asking around the conference and it's a great environment. It's
- 44:14Speaker 5: going to be, it's going to be a really great environment.
- 44:16Speaker 5: It'll be interesting how Halloween affects all that. My guess
- 44:19Speaker 5: is the college students won't care. They'll be rowdy. You
- 44:21Speaker 5: may miss some families or, but you know, but who knows?
- 44:26Speaker 5: We know that we're going to expect a ton of
- 44:29Speaker 5: noise and you got to be able to weather that.
- 44:33Speaker 5: That's the difficult part, right? Is how that plays on
- 44:37Speaker 5: the emotions. You know, when you drop a ball home, it's, oh,
- 44:44Speaker 5: and then, you know, everyone's quiet. You drop a ball
- 44:48Speaker 5: on the road and everyone's just going crazy, right? And
- 44:52Speaker 5: can you steal that momentum back? Can you let it go,
- 44:58Speaker 5: short memory, focus on the next play? So that's a
- 45:03Speaker 5: big part of going on the road is being mature
- 45:05Speaker 5: enough to handle the adversity and the situations as they arise.
- 45:09Speaker 5: Colorado got that way. All of a sudden, you gave
- 45:12Speaker 5: them life. People stuck around and they got louder. Okay,
- 45:17Speaker 5: here we go.
- 45:18Speaker 4: A good Saturday looks like what for the Utes?
- 45:23Speaker 5: I'd like to see us get back to starting fast.
- 45:28Speaker 5: Both on the offense. I should say defense started fast
- 45:32Speaker 5: in that game. The last game, just a little bit
- 45:34Speaker 5: more We were driving the ball and then again you
- 45:38Speaker 5: get either an interception or something to stall the drive.
- 45:45Speaker 5: On the road, there's certain things you've got to pack
- 45:49Speaker 5: with you. A run game, run defense, great special teams.
- 45:56Speaker 5: That's got to show up.
- 45:57Speaker 4: And valuing the football.
- 45:58Speaker 5: Always pack that. Especially on the road.
- 46:04Speaker 3: The kickoff Saturday, 145 Mountain Time. Should be a great
- 46:07Speaker 3: day for football in Cincinnati. And Sly and I will
- 46:10Speaker 3: be there with Zach Moss to call it. Morgan will
- 46:12Speaker 3: be there to coach it. And we hope you guys
- 46:14Speaker 3: are there to listen to it as well. Big thank
- 46:16Speaker 3: you to Daniel Bray, Jai Moe, and, of course, Morgan Scali.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Enjoy your evening. We'll talk to you Saturday from Cincinnati.
- 46:22Speaker 3: This has been Utah Football from ESPN 700 and the
- 46:25Speaker 3: Ute Sports Radio Network.
