- 0:04Welcome back to part. 2 of my Mindanao folktales,
- 0:06Extravaganza. If you miss the introduction, I
- 0:09would suggest that you go back and listen to episode, 90 a 4
- 0:12part 1, okay? Let's begin Luma bet from the
- 0:18Bugaboo people. Soon after people were created
- 0:22on Earth, there was born, a child named looma bed who lived
- 0:26to be a very, very old man. He could talk when he was, but
- 0:31one day old and all his life, he did wonderful things.
- 0:34Until the people came to believe that he had been sent by Manama
- 0:38the great spirit. When Luma bet was still a young
- 0:43man, he had a fine dog and he enjoyed nothing so much as
- 0:47taking him to the mountains to hunt.
- 0:50One day, the dog noticed a white deer Luma bed and His companion
- 0:55started in Pursuit, but the deer was very Swift and they could
- 0:58not catch it on. And on, they went until they had
- 1:01gone around the world and still the deer was a head one by one
- 1:06his companions dropped out of the chase.
- 1:08But Luma bet would not give up until he had the deer all the
- 1:12time. He had, but one banana and one
- 1:14commode. Sweet potato for food.
- 1:17But each night, he planted the skins of these and in the
- 1:20morning he found a banana tree with ripe fruit.
- 1:23And a sweet potato. Large enough to eat So he kept
- 1:27on until he had been around the world nine times, and he was an
- 1:30old man, and his hair was gray at last, he caught the deer.
- 1:35And then he called all the people to a great feast to see
- 1:38the animal while all were making Mary Lou met told them to take a
- 1:42knife and kill his father, they were greatly surprised, but did
- 1:46his he commanded? And when the old man was dead,
- 1:49Luma bet waved, his headband over him, and he came to life
- 1:52again. Eight times.
- 1:55They killed the old man, at Luma B command, and the 8th time, he
- 1:58was small, like a little boy. For each time, they had cut off
- 2:01some of his flesh. They all wondered very much at
- 2:05Luma B power and they were certain that he was a God.
- 2:09One morning, some Spirits came to talk with the Luma bed and
- 2:12after they had gone, he called the people to come into his
- 2:15house. We cannot all come in said, the
- 2:19people for your house is small and we are many.
- 2:22There's plenty of room said he. So all went in and to their
- 2:27surprise. It did not seem crowded then he
- 2:30told the people that he was going on a long journey and that
- 2:33all who believed he had great power, could go with him while.
- 2:36All who remained behind would be changed into animals and buso.
- 2:41He started out many following him and it was, as he said, for
- 2:46those who refuse to go were immediately changed into animals
- 2:49and boo. So he led the people far away
- 2:52across the ocean to a place where the earth and the sky meet
- 2:56When they arrived, they saw that the sky moved up and down like a
- 2:59man opening and closing his Jaws.
- 3:03Sky. You must go up commanded Luma
- 3:06bet, but the sky would not obey. So the people could not go
- 3:10through. Finally Loom about promises guy
- 3:14that if he would let all the others through, he might have
- 3:17the last man who tried to pass agreeing to this the sky opened
- 3:21and the people entered but when near the last the sky shut down.
- 3:25So suddenly that he caught not only the last man but also the
- 3:29long knife of the man before on that same day, Luma bet son, who
- 3:34was hunting, did not know that his father had gone to the sky.
- 3:38When he was tired of the Chase, he wanted to go to his father so
- 3:41he leaned an arrow against ability tree and sat down on it.
- 3:46Slowly. It began to go down and it
- 3:48carried him to his father's place.
- 3:50But when he arrived, he could find no people.
- 3:54He looked here and there and could find nothing but a gun
- 3:56made of gold. This made him very sorrowful and
- 3:59he did not know what to do until some white bees.
- 4:02Which were in the house. Said to him you must not weep
- 4:05for. We can take you to the sky where
- 4:07your father is So he did as they bade and wrote on the gun and
- 4:12the bees flew away with him until in three days they reached
- 4:15the sky now, although almost all of the men who followed Luma bed
- 4:19or content to live in the sky, there was one who was very
- 4:22unhappy and all the time. He kept looking down at the land
- 4:25below, the spirits, made fun of him and wanted to take out his
- 4:29intestines so that he would be like them and never die, but he
- 4:33was afraid and always begged to be allowed to go back home.
- 4:38Finally Manama told the spirits to allow him to go.
- 4:41So they made a chain of leaves of the Quran grass and tied it
- 4:44to his legs. Then they let him down slowly
- 4:49head first, and when he reached the ground, he was no longer a
- 4:52man, but an owl. All right, and here's the story
- 5:11of creation from the belong people in the very beginning,
- 5:15there lived a being so large that he cannot be compared with
- 5:18any known thing, his name was Maloo and when he sat on the
- 5:22clouds which were his home, he occupied all the space above.
- 5:27His teeth were pure gold and because he was very cleanly and
- 5:31continually rubbed himself with his hands, his skin became Pure
- 5:35White, the dead skin, which he rubbed off.
- 5:37His body was placed on one side and a pile and by-and-by this
- 5:41pile became so large that he was annoyed and set himself to
- 5:45consider what he could do with it.
- 5:47Finally Mallu decided to make the Earth.
- 5:50So we worked very hard in putting the dead skin into shape
- 5:54and when it was finished he was so pleased with it that he
- 5:57determined to make two beings like himself, those smaller to
- 6:00live on it. Taking the remnants of the
- 6:03material left after making the Earth, he fashioned to men, but
- 6:07just as they were all finished. Except their noses, taotaomona
- 6:11from below, the Earth appeared, and wanted to help him.
- 6:15Melo did not wish any assistance and a great argument ensued.
- 6:20Tell Tana. Finally won his point and made
- 6:22the noses, which he placed on the people upside down.
- 6:26When all was finished, melu and Tatiana whipped, the forms until
- 6:29they moved, then melu went to his home, above the clouds, and
- 6:33tell Tana returned to his place below the Earth.
- 6:36All went well until one day, a great rain came and the people
- 6:40on the Earth nearly drowned from the water, which ran off their
- 6:42heads into their noses. Mellow from his place on the
- 6:47cloud, saw their danger and he came quickly to Earth and save
- 6:50their lives by turning their noses.
- 6:52The other side up, the people were very grateful to him and
- 6:56promised to do anything. He should ask of them.
- 6:59Before he left for the sky, they told him that they were very
- 7:03unhappy living on the great Earth all alone.
- 7:06So he told them to save all their hair from their heads and
- 7:09the dry skin from their bodies. And the next time he came, he
- 7:13would make them some Companions. And in this way, there came to
- 7:17be a great many people on the Earth.
- 7:34Another creation story from the Bible on people.
- 7:39In the beginning, there were four beings and they lived on an
- 7:42island, no larger than a hat. On this island, there were no
- 7:47trees or grass or any other living things.
- 7:50Besides these four people in one bird, one day they sent this
- 7:54bird out across the waters to see what he could find.
- 7:57And when he returned, he brought some Earth a piece of rohtang
- 8:01and some fruit. Melu, the greatest of the, for
- 8:05took the soil and shaped it, and beat it with a paddle in the
- 8:09same manner, in which a woman shape spots of clay and when he
- 8:13finished, he had made the Earth, then he planted the seeds from
- 8:16the fruit and they grew until there was much Raton and many
- 8:20trees bearing fruit. The for beings watch the growth
- 8:24for a long time and were, well, pleased with their work.
- 8:28But finally Maloo said of what use is this Earth and all the
- 8:32Raton and fruit. If there are no people And the
- 8:36others replied. Let us make some people out of
- 8:39wax. So they took some wax and worked
- 8:42long fashioning it into forms. But when they brought them to
- 8:46the fire, the wax melted, and they saw that man could not be
- 8:49made in that way. Next, they decided to try to use
- 8:52dirt and making people and mellow, and one of his
- 8:55companions began working on that.
- 8:58All went well until they were ready to make the noses.
- 9:01The companion who was working on that part, put them on upside
- 9:04down. Melo told him that the people
- 9:07would drown if he left them that way but he refused to change
- 9:10them when his back was turned. However malusi's the noses, one
- 9:15by one and turned them as they are now, but he was in such a
- 9:19hurry that he pressed his finger at the root and it left a mark
- 9:22in the soft clay, which you can still see on the faces of
- 9:25people. All right, this is the children
- 9:42of limacon and this is, Amanda story from Mindanao.
- 9:49In the very early days. Before there were any people on
- 9:52the Earth, the limo cone, a kind of Dove were very powerful and
- 9:56could talk like men, so they looked like birds one, limacon
- 10:00laid, two eggs, one at the mouth of the Nile River and one
- 10:04farther up its course. After some time, these eggs
- 10:07hatched and the one at the mouth of the river, became a man while
- 10:10the other became a woman. The man lived alone on the bank
- 10:14of the river for a long time, but he was very lonely and
- 10:18wished many times for a companion.
- 10:21One day, when he was crossing the river, something was swept
- 10:24against his legs with such force that it nearly caused him to
- 10:27drown on examining it. He found that it was a hair and
- 10:31he determined to go up the river and find whence, it came.
- 10:35He traveled up the stream, looking on both Banks.
- 10:38Until finally, he found the woman and he was very happy to
- 10:41think that at last he could have a companion.
- 10:44They were married and had many children.
- 10:46Who are the mundia still living along the Nile River.
- 11:06And this is the story of the Sun and the Moon also from the
- 11:09Monday of people. The sun and the moon were
- 11:14married, but the sun was very ugly.
- 11:16And quarrelsome, one day, he became angry at the moon and
- 11:21started to chase her. She ran very fast until she was
- 11:24some distance ahead of him when she grew tired and he almost
- 11:28caught her ever, since he has been chasing her at times,
- 11:32almost reaching her. And again, falling far behind
- 11:36the first child of the sun and moon was a large star and he was
- 11:39like a man. One time the sun becoming angry
- 11:42at the star cut him up into small pieces and Scattered him
- 11:45over the whole Sky just as a woman scatters rice and ever
- 11:49since there have been many stars, another child of the sun
- 11:54and moon was a gigantic crab. He still lives and is so
- 11:57powerful that every time he opens and closes his eyes, there
- 12:00is a flash of lightning, most of the time.
- 12:03The crab lives in a large hole in the bottom of the sea and
- 12:06when he is there, we have high tide but when he leaves the
- 12:09whole, the waters, In and there is low tide.
- 12:13Is moving about also causes Great Waves on the surface of
- 12:16the Sea. The Crab is quarrelsome, like
- 12:18his father and he, sometimes become so angry with his mother,
- 12:22the Moon that he tries to swallow her when the people on
- 12:26Earth were fond of the Moon, see the crab near her, they run out
- 12:30of doors and shout and beat on gongs, until he is frightened
- 12:34away. And thus, the Moon is saved.
- 12:54And now we have the Widow's son from the supermoon people.
- 12:59In a little house at the edge of a village lived, a widow with
- 13:02her only son and they were very happy together.
- 13:05The sun was kind to his mother and they made their living by
- 13:08growing rice in clearings on the Mountainside and by hunting wild
- 13:12pig in the forest. One evening, when their supply
- 13:16of meat was low, the boy said mother.
- 13:19I'm going to hunt pig in the morning and I wish you would
- 13:21prepare rice for me before daylight.
- 13:25So the Widow Rose early and cook the rice.
- 13:27And at dawn, the boy started out with his Spear and dog.
- 13:31Some distance from the village, he entered the thick forest He
- 13:34Walked on and on ever on the lookout for game.
- 13:37But none appeared at last when he had traveled far in the sun
- 13:41was hot. He sat down on a rock to rest
- 13:44and took out his brass box to get a piece of betel nut.
- 13:48He prepared the nut and leave for chewing and as he did, he
- 13:52saw wondered why it was that he had been so unsuccessful that
- 13:55day. But even as he pondered, he
- 13:58heard his dog barking sharply and crammed the betel nut into
- 14:01his mouth and he leaped up and ran toward the dog as he grew
- 14:05nearer, he could see that the game was a fine large Pig.
- 14:08All black save, its four legs, which were white.
- 14:12He lifted his Spear and took aim, but before he could throw
- 14:15the pig started to run and instead of going toward the
- 14:18Watercourse, it ran straight up the mountain.
- 14:21The boy went on in Hot Pursuit and when the pig paused again,
- 14:24he took aim but before he could throw it.
- 14:26Ran on. Six times the big stopped just
- 14:30long enough for the boy to take Aim and then started on before.
- 14:33He could throw the seventh time. However, it halted on the top of
- 14:37a large flat Rock, and the boy succeeded in killing it.
- 14:41He tied its legs together with a piece of written and was about
- 14:44to start for home with the pig on his back.
- 14:47Went to his surprise, a door in the large Stone, swung open and
- 14:51a man stepped out. Why have you killed my masters
- 14:55pig as the man? I did not know that this pig
- 14:58belonged to anyone replied the Widow's son, I was hunting as I
- 15:03often do, and when my dog found the pig, I helped him to catch
- 15:06it. Come in and see my master said,
- 15:10the man and the boy, followed him into the stone where he
- 15:13found himself in a large room. The ceiling and floor were
- 15:17covered with peculiar cloth that had seven wide Stripes of red
- 15:21alternating with the like number of yellow stripes when the
- 15:25master of the place appeared his trousers Were of seven colors as
- 15:28were his jacket and the kerchief about his head.
- 15:32The master ordered betel nut. And when it was brought they
- 15:35chewed together, Then he called for wine and it was brought in a
- 15:39jar, so large that it had to be set on the ground under the
- 15:43house. And even then the top came, so
- 15:45high above the floor, that they brought a seat for the Widow's
- 15:48son, and it raised him just high enough to drink from the read in
- 15:52the top of the jar. He drank seven cups of wine and
- 15:56then they ate rice and fish and talked together.
- 16:00The master did not blame the boy for killing the pig and declared
- 16:03that he wished to make a brother of him.
- 16:06So they became friends in the boy remained seven days in the
- 16:08stone, at the end of that time, he said that he must return to
- 16:12his mother would be worried about him.
- 16:16In the early morning, he left the strange house and started
- 16:18for home. At first, he walked briskly, but
- 16:22as the morning wore on, he went more slowly.
- 16:24And finally, when the sun was high, he sat down on a rock to
- 16:28rest. Suddenly looking up.
- 16:31He saw before him, seven men each armed with a spear a shield
- 16:35and a sword, they were dressed in different colors and each man
- 16:39had eyes, the same color as his clothes.
- 16:42The leader who was dressed all in red with red eyes to match
- 16:46spoke first asking the boy where he was going.
- 16:50The boy replied that he was going home to his mother would
- 16:52be looking for him and added. Now, I ask where you are going
- 16:56all armed Ready for War. We are warriors, replied the man
- 17:01in red and we go up and down the world killing whatever.
- 17:05We see that has life. Now that we have met you we must
- 17:08kill you. Also the boy startled by this
- 17:11strange speech? Each was about to answer when he
- 17:14heard a voice near him say fight for, they will try to kill you
- 17:19and upon looking up. He saw his spear shield and
- 17:22sword which he had left at home. Then he knew that the command
- 17:26came from a spirit so he took his weapons and began to fight
- 17:30for three days and nights they contended and never before had
- 17:33the seven seen one, man. So brave on the fourth day, the
- 17:37leader was wounded in fell dead and then one by one the other
- 17:41six fell. When they were all killed, the
- 17:44Widow's son was so crazed with fighting they thought no longer
- 17:47returning home, but started out to find more to slay.
- 17:51In his wanderings, he came to the home of a great giant, whose
- 17:55house was already full of men. He had conquered him battle, and
- 17:58he called up from outside. Is the Master of the House at
- 18:01home if he is let him come out and fight.
- 18:06This through the giant into a rage and seizing, his shield in
- 18:09his spear, a shaft of, which was the trunk of a tree, he sprang
- 18:14to the door and left to the ground, not waiting to go down
- 18:16the notch poll, which served four steps.
- 18:19He looked around for his antagonist and seeing only the
- 18:22Widow's son he roared. Where is that man?
- 18:26That wants to fight that thing. It is only a fly.
- 18:33The boy did not stop to answer but rushed at the giant with his
- 18:36knife and for three days and nights, they struggled till the
- 18:40giant fell wounded at the waist. After that, the Widow's son
- 18:44stopped only long enough to burn the Giant's house, and then
- 18:47rushed on looking for someone else to slay.
- 18:50Suddenly he again heard the voice which had bade him fight
- 18:53the seven men and this time, it said go home.
- 18:57Now, for your mother is grieved at your absence In a rage.
- 19:02He sprang forward with this sword, though.
- 19:04He could see no enemy, then the spirit which had spoken to him.
- 19:08Made him sleep for a short time when he awoke, the rage was
- 19:12spent again, the spirit appeared in.
- 19:15It said the seven men whom you killed were sent to kill you by
- 19:19the spirit of the great stone for.
- 19:21He looked in your hand and saw that you were to marry the
- 19:24orphan girl, whom he himself, wish to Wed, but you have
- 19:28conquered. Your enemies are dead.
- 19:31Go. Home now and prepare, great
- 19:32quantity of wine. For, I shall bring your enemies
- 19:35to life again and you will all live in peace.
- 19:39So the Widow's son, went home and his mother who had believed
- 19:42him dead was filled with joy at his coming and all the people in
- 19:46the town came out to welcome him.
- 19:49When he had told them his story, they hastened to get wine and
- 19:52all day, they board jars, full to the Widow's house.
- 19:57That night there was a great feast and the spirit of the
- 20:01great Stone. His seven Warriors, The Friendly
- 20:03Spirit and the giant all came, the Widow's son, married.
- 20:07The orphan girl while another beautiful woman, became the wife
- 20:11of the spirit of the stone, the end.
- 20:37Wow, that was a wonderful set of stories from many different
- 20:40people. I love the story of the man who
- 20:43gets the Bolos and hatchets to work for him but then lost his
- 20:46arm because he was being watched.
- 20:48It seemed rather drastic but interesting at the same time,
- 20:53also the Mondeo story of how the sun and the moon and the stars
- 20:55and the crab came to be so cool. The podcast shout out is to slap
- 21:01shot sweethearts. I followed this pod for a little
