- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Fruitful Work, we're asking
- 0:16the question, what kind of fruit am I
- 0:18bearing at work?
- 0:19Because we often don't bear the kind of
- 0:21fruit we wish we would, but by God's
- 0:23grace, by the power of the Holy Spirit,
- 0:25we can bear fruit that is good.
- 0:28In our current episode, we're going to talk
- 0:30about peace.
- 0:31So first, I want to talk about war.
- 0:38I have a friend who's a Marine.
- 0:41He was in Iraq in the city of
- 0:42Fallujah during the conflict in the early 2000s.
- 0:45He was telling about a time he had
- 0:47to execute a retreat, and how stressful it
- 0:50was knowing even as they were pulling back
- 0:52that they could still die at any time.
- 0:55A bullet or an IED, an unanticipated attack,
- 0:59could mean the end of things.
- 1:02And most of us, when we go to
- 1:03work, we don't face that kind of threat
- 1:06and violence.
- 1:08But work can still feel like a battlefield
- 1:10much of the time.
- 1:12The part of our brain that activates when
- 1:14we face literal physical violence can still activate
- 1:16in response to social situations.
- 1:19And in the workplace, healthy conflict is necessary
- 1:22on every team, but so often there's unhealthy
- 1:24conflict too, where people are being nasty to
- 1:27each other, they're gossiping about each other, they're
- 1:29holding one another in contempt.
- 1:31They're playing office politics and forcing other people
- 1:34to pick sides.
- 1:36And instead of it feeling like we're pulling
- 1:38together towards a common purpose as a team,
- 1:41it can feel like you have to watch
- 1:42your own back.
- 1:44Keep an eye over your shoulder.
- 1:46Work is often not a place of peace.
- 1:50As we're looking at the fruit of the
- 1:51spirit in Galatians chapter 5, peace is listed
- 1:55as part of the fruit of the spirit.
- 1:57And so a question we need to ask
- 1:58as disciples of Jesus is, what kind of
- 2:00peace is it talking about?
- 2:02What kind of peace do we bear as
- 2:04part of the fruit of the spirit when
- 2:06we follow Jesus?
- 2:08Because when we hear the word peace, there's
- 2:10two different kinds of peace that might come
- 2:12to mind for us, at least in our
- 2:13context.
- 2:14One definition of peace is psychological, inner peace
- 2:18or inward peace.
- 2:20When you wake up in the morning, are
- 2:21you flooded with anxiety?
- 2:23When you go throughout your day, are you
- 2:25dominated by fear and worry?
- 2:28Or when you wake up in the morning,
- 2:30do you have a feeling of peace?
- 2:33As you go throughout your day, do you
- 2:34have confidence?
- 2:35Ah, all will be well.
- 2:38And as other tumultuous emotions come up, are
- 2:40you able to move through those and return
- 2:43to that place of serenity, calm, well-being?
- 2:48Inward peace.
- 2:50But of course, peace also makes us think
- 2:52of war and peace, the geopolitical reality of
- 2:56violence and conflict among peoples and nations, the
- 2:59idea of crime and the threat of violence,
- 3:01both in our local neighborhoods and all around
- 3:04the world.
- 3:05And we read the news of ongoing conflicts,
- 3:07and our hearts are just so grieved about
- 3:09what everyone experiences during times of war.
- 3:13These two ways of looking at peace raise
- 3:16a question.
- 3:17Is there any relationship between them?
- 3:19Is there a connection between inward peace and
- 3:22outward peace?
- 3:24This is an empirical question.
- 3:25This is a question that we can investigate
- 3:27and that has been investigated by scholars of
- 3:30various types.
- 3:31And the answer is a resounding yes.
- 3:33There is a relationship between people and communities'
- 3:36individual and social experience of emotions and their
- 3:41experience of violence and conflict and decisions to
- 3:44go into conflict.
- 3:46I want to cite just one scholar's work
- 3:49along these lines.
- 3:50This is Dr. Daniel Rothbart from the Carter
- 3:53School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George
- 3:55Mason University.
- 3:57Rothbart has studied many conflicts around the world,
- 4:01Israel, Palestine, conflicts inside of the United States,
- 4:05conflicts elsewhere.
- 4:06He pays attention to the role of the
- 4:08emotions in these conflicts.
- 4:09This is from his paper Power, Emotions, and
- 4:12Violent Conflicts.
- 4:14He's explaining two interrelated concepts.
- 4:17One is what he calls emotional contagion.
- 4:19Emotions are contagious.
- 4:22The other is what he calls affect power.
- 4:25Emotions are powerful.
- 4:26Emotions make a difference.
- 4:28Here's what he says.
- 4:30Stories of fear, hatred and anger are often
- 4:34intensified with reference to the collective memory the
- 4:38ancestors have of past tragedies.
- 4:41Such stories can put individuals in a fever
- 4:43pitch of rage that can promote calls for
- 4:46violence against the enemy.
- 4:48A nation's collective anger, revenge and fear can
- 4:51impact decisions regarding war and peace.
- 4:56So emotions are not incidental to even the
- 4:58big geopolitical picture of armed conflict.
- 5:02We know that this happens.
- 5:04There's a leader or someone in some position
- 5:07of influence who says, remember what they did
- 5:09to us?
- 5:11Remember how they did that to our people?
- 5:14Let's go get them.
- 5:16And then people respond to that.
- 5:18It's an emotional appeal that resonates with deep
- 5:21emotions of fear, of hatred, of anger.
- 5:24And that can cause an entire nation to
- 5:27go to war.
- 5:29Well, that's true even at that macro geopolitical
- 5:32scale.
- 5:33It's also true in our workplaces, isn't it?
- 5:35That emotions are catching and emotions are powerful.
- 5:39Let's just think about the kind of emotion
- 5:42of despair.
- 5:43Someone who's dominated by a sense like, this
- 5:45is pointless.
- 5:46This doesn't matter.
- 5:48There's somebody like that on your team.
- 5:50What do they do?
- 5:50They complain.
- 5:52They talk about how what you're doing doesn't
- 5:54really make a difference.
- 5:55They never seem to find the bright side.
- 5:57They always find the cloud within the silver
- 6:00lining rather than the other way around.
- 6:02How does that affect you?
- 6:03Well, if you're like me, it's catching.
- 6:05I'm like, oh, yeah, maybe things are pointless.
- 6:08My own cynicism is drawn out by somebody
- 6:11else's complaint.
- 6:13So emotions are catching.
- 6:15Another example, maybe somebody is really angry.
- 6:18Let's say you have an angry manager where
- 6:20whenever anybody doesn't do exactly what they want,
- 6:23they just blow up at them.
- 6:24Well, how does that affect other teammates?
- 6:27Well, if you've been on the receiving end
- 6:29of anger, that can cause you to also
- 6:31be on the giving end of anger towards
- 6:32someone else.
- 6:33If somebody blows up at you, you're more
- 6:34likely to blow up at a coworker rather
- 6:37than it fostering an environment of peace and
- 6:39collaboration.
- 6:40It fosters that continual conflict that doesn't even
- 6:42need to happen because anger is usually rooted
- 6:44in something else.
- 6:45You know, someone's experience of shame or something
- 6:47else going on in their life.
- 6:48But it's being expressed in the workplace.
- 6:52So emotions are catching emotions are powerful.
- 6:54Does that sense of despair or that sense
- 6:56of anger make a difference in how you
- 6:57get your job done?
- 6:58Of course it does.
- 6:59When you're complaining, when you're experiencing that kind
- 7:01of despair, you don't engage with your work.
- 7:03You don't give it that oomph that it
- 7:05needs to really get the job done.
- 7:07Instead, you know, just do what you have
- 7:11to to get by.
- 7:12The phenomenon that's been called quiet quitting is
- 7:14not new.
- 7:16Disengagement from work in various forms is a
- 7:18huge problem.
- 7:19It's even been measured by scholars in terms
- 7:21of losses of millions of dollars because employees
- 7:23don't have the heart for their work.
- 7:27The same thing with anger.
- 7:28If you have an environment of anger, you
- 7:30know what's really hard to foster?
- 7:31Is trust.
- 7:33It's hard to trust a boss who's going
- 7:34to blow up at you if you make
- 7:34a mistake or if you say something wrong.
- 7:37And again, many studies have shown that high
- 7:39trust teams are high performing teams, teams where
- 7:41people can watch each other's backs, get the
- 7:44job done.
- 7:45And teams where you have to watch your
- 7:46own back, you don't get the job done
- 7:48in the same way.
- 7:50So emotions are not just contagious.
- 7:51Emotions are powerful.
- 7:52Emotions make a difference to the mission of
- 7:54your organization.
- 7:54Emotions make a difference to the bottom line.
- 7:56Emotions make a difference to whether anything ultimately
- 7:58is accomplished.
- 8:01So now, let's go back to peace as
- 8:03part of the fruit of the spirit.
- 8:06What kind of peace is part of the
- 8:09fruit of the spirit?
- 8:11Well, for this, we have to look at
- 8:12the whole context of Paul's letter to the
- 8:14Galatians, right?
- 8:14Because it's just one word in chapter 5
- 8:16where it says, you know, love, joy, peace,
- 8:18patience, and then it keeps going.
- 8:19Just one word.
- 8:20So to understand, what does that word mean
- 8:22in Galatians?
- 8:23We've got to look at the whole letter.
- 8:24And we did some work on this early
- 8:25in the series just by way of reminder.
- 8:28Remember, there were Gentile believers and there were
- 8:31Jewish believers that were trying to learn how
- 8:33to be disciples of Jesus together.
- 8:36And Paul's addressing them.
- 8:38And one alternative, so to speak, one option
- 8:40that's been presented is, let's just get all
- 8:43the Gentiles to become Jewish.
- 8:45That way, we'll all be alike.
- 8:47We won't have differences.
- 8:48We'll all be circumcised.
- 8:50We'll all follow Torah.
- 8:52And, you know, that will foster social cohesion,
- 8:54among other things.
- 8:56The opposite alternative is, the Gentiles get to
- 9:00stay Gentiles and the Jews get to stay
- 9:02Jews.
- 9:03But we're all going to learn to do
- 9:05community together under the Lordship of Jesus the
- 9:08Messiah.
- 9:10And that's the alternative that Paul endorses so
- 9:12actively and even sometimes vehemently in the letter
- 9:15to the Galatians.
- 9:16He's saying, don't turn to a different gospel.
- 9:18Don't turn to a gospel that says you
- 9:20have to embrace Jesus plus the Torah.
- 9:22We embrace Jesus and the power of the
- 9:24Holy Spirit.
- 9:25One spirit that unites Jew and Gentile alike.
- 9:30So in that context, when Paul says that
- 9:33peace is a fruit of the spirit, there
- 9:36is a social valence, a social direction to
- 9:40that word.
- 9:41He's not just talking about an inward experience.
- 9:44He's talking about peace among people in a
- 9:47community.
- 9:48Are we living in peace with one another?
- 9:51But he's not not talking about an inward
- 9:54dynamic as well.
- 9:55He's talking about more than an inward dynamic,
- 9:58but not less.
- 9:59Because remember, what's the context of the list
- 10:00of the fruit of the spirit or the
- 10:02parts of the fruit of the spirit?
- 10:03It's the difference between the works of the
- 10:05flesh versus the fruit of the spirit.
- 10:08There's an inward conflict for each of us
- 10:10and for us as a community of disciples
- 10:13between the works of the flesh and the
- 10:15fruit of the spirit.
- 10:16There's an inward freedom that Jesus brings.
- 10:20Our Paul says that Christ has set us
- 10:21free.
- 10:22So we don't submit again to a yoke
- 10:23of slavery.
- 10:24We experience a deep inward change when we
- 10:28come into the Kingdom of God through faith
- 10:31in Jesus Christ.
- 10:33So that inward change results in this outward
- 10:37social connection.
- 10:40That inward change results in Jews and Gentiles
- 10:44worshipping together.
- 10:46And Paul carries that through straight into the
- 10:48next chapter, the final chapter of Galatians, where
- 10:50he says, carry one another's burdens and so
- 10:53fulfill the law of Christ.
- 10:55That's 6 verse 2.
- 10:57He's saying, how do we actually fulfill Torah?
- 11:00How do we actually fulfill the law of
- 11:01Christ, the one whom we all worship as
- 11:04a Messiah?
- 11:05We carry each other's burdens.
- 11:07That's how we know we're really following in
- 11:09his way.
- 11:09That's how we know we're keeping step with
- 11:11the spirit.
- 11:14So when we think about, what does it
- 11:16mean to practice peace in our workplace?
- 11:20The question is, am I living at peace
- 11:22with my brothers and sisters in Christ?
- 11:25Am I living at peace with other people
- 11:27more generally, everyone who's created in the image
- 11:29of God around me?
- 11:31And this connects back to the idea of
- 11:33mission that we've talked about in a few
- 11:35different episodes that we are sent as emissaries
- 11:39into our workplaces.
- 11:41We can be agents of peace in our
- 11:44workplaces.
- 11:46So think again, emotions are contagious and emotions
- 11:49are powerful.
- 11:50Somebody who has a deep experience of inward
- 11:53peace, joy and confidence.
- 11:57How does that affect a team?
- 11:59Well, that's contagious too.
- 12:00I've experienced that when there's a leader who's
- 12:02facing a tough decision, dealing with budget cuts,
- 12:05dealing with anxious employees, dealing with a stressful
- 12:09environment more broadly in the industry.
- 12:11And they show up and they say, here's
- 12:13the plan.
- 12:14Here's what we're going to do.
- 12:15I know it's hard, but we can do
- 12:16it.
- 12:17Man, does that change the room?
- 12:19Does that change my attitude about the work
- 12:21that I'm doing every day?
- 12:24Same thing, emotions are powerful.
- 12:27It's not just an inspirational change.
- 12:29It affects the bottom line.
- 12:30It affects the mission of the organization as
- 12:33it moves forward.
- 12:33When people believe things are going to be
- 12:36all right.
- 12:37When somebody with deep inward peace can spread
- 12:40it to others.
- 12:41That affects things.
- 12:42That makes work a better place to be.
- 12:45And that's what you can be as a
- 12:47disciple of Jesus is that agent of that
- 12:49kind of peace, that kind of well-being
- 12:52to your team, to the people around you.
- 12:55And if you're just a co-worker, right?
- 12:58If you don't report over any, if nobody
- 13:00reports to you, if you're not a manager
- 13:01over anybody, maybe your kingdom only goes to
- 13:04the edges of your cubicle, like we talked
- 13:05about in the imagining work series and that
- 13:07of being a king in your workplace.
- 13:09You can still bring peace to that little
- 13:11kingdom.
- 13:12You can still bring peace to your area
- 13:14where you have influence.
- 13:16And if you are a leader who does
- 13:17have a larger kingdom and multiple people reporting
- 13:19to you and a lot of influence, so
- 13:22much more as you bring that inward peace,
- 13:25it will cascade toward the people that you're
- 13:28leading.
- 13:30So that leads us to the question, how
- 13:31do I grow in peace?
- 13:34What does it mean to foster that kind
- 13:36of inward peace that has an outward social
- 13:38expression?
- 13:39Well, I want to turn to a verse
- 13:40from the Psalms that addresses this exact dynamic.
- 13:44Let's take a minute and listen to somebody
- 13:45like David who is very familiar with violence
- 13:47and conflict.
- 13:48He says this in Psalm 16 verse 8.
- 13:51I have set the Lord always before me.
- 13:54Because he is at my right hand, I
- 13:57shall not be shaken.
- 14:00I have set the Lord always before me.
- 14:04That's how we grow in peace.
- 14:05We let God give us his peace in
- 14:09Jesus Christ.
- 14:10We keep it before our eyes.
- 14:12We set the Lord always before us.
- 14:15That's what allows us to grow in peace.
- 14:17That's what allows us to not be shaken.
- 14:21Back in the imagining work series, we talked
- 14:23about icons and art and kind of the
- 14:25Orthodox vision that when you're looking at an
- 14:28icon, you can receive a vision of the
- 14:30spiritual world.
- 14:31That's one really practical way to set the
- 14:34Lord always before you, maybe change your desktop
- 14:37background to an icon that reminds you of
- 14:40the presence of God with you, or just
- 14:42tuck a little icon picture in a bookmark
- 14:44and something that you'll see like your daily
- 14:46planner.
- 14:48That way when you're moving to the next
- 14:49meeting, when you're feeling the different difficult emotions
- 14:52that come up during the work day, you
- 14:53remember, oh, here's the Lord.
- 14:56I have set the Lord always before me.
- 14:58Because he is at my right hand, I
- 15:01shall not be shaken.
- 15:03I want to give just a funny example
- 15:04of this.
- 15:05There's this wonderful Bollywood movie called Three Idiots,
- 15:08and there's a song called All is Well
- 15:11in that movie where they're talking about the
- 15:14stress that you experienced in your heart pumping,
- 15:16and they just say put your hand on
- 15:17your heart and say all is well.
- 15:19Now, that's not a Christian movie, but all
- 15:22truth is God's truth.
- 15:24I have set the Lord always before me,
- 15:27all is well.
- 15:28Sometimes I'll just do that.
- 15:29I'll put my hand on my heart and
- 15:31say all is well.
- 15:32All is well.
- 15:34That helps me experience God's peace.
- 15:36That helps me be an agent of peace
- 15:37to the people around me.
- 15:42Lord Jesus, you are the prince of peace.
- 15:44You are the author of peace.
- 15:45You are the bringer of peace.
- 15:48Bring your peace in our hearts so we
- 15:49can bring it to the people around us
- 15:51in our workplaces and everywhere else.
- 15:54Do your work in us as we do
- 15:55our work with you.
- 15:57Amen.
- 16:02Thanks for listening.
