- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Dr.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Patty Ferris.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I'm a board certified dermatologist, and I'm your host for this episode of Skincare Confidential.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: We're coming to you live from the Science of Skin Summit, so this is very exciting for us.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: This is the end of a long year of culmination of bringing all the scientists, the researchers, and the manufacturers together to put on an educational event for healthcare professionals about the science behind skin and the science behind skin care.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I am so happy today to have Britt Fallon here from New Beauty.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: She's here for the conference.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: She came to our Durinfluencer session this morning.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And welcome, Britt.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me, Dr.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Ferris.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: I am so thrilled to be here on behalf of New Beauty.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: We are a 20-year media outlet and magazine, and NewBeauty.com is our website.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I'm the director of beauty.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: I just celebrated my 13-year anniversary a couple weeks ago.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: So I have really seen the evolution of the brand, and I'm just so happy to be here as I think your first media guest ever at the summit.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: You are, and you know, we've never really had anybody from the media approach us, and we've never really gone out to encourage media.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: So I think my first question for you is what made you decide to come to the summit?
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: So I am thrilled to be here because New Beauty is the beauty authority.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: We are real we have established ourselves over the years as the beauty authority to really educate and empower our audience to make smart beauty decisions.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: And a lot of that is skincare based.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: And this the Science of Skincare Summit is perfect for us.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: It's a way to see all of the KOLs that we write about on a daily basis in action, speaking on these fabulous panels that you all have curated.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: And you know, we are writers and journalists and reporters, but there's so much to learn all the time.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: And what better place to do that than here at this summit?
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Um many of our New Beauty partners are here.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, our Dur, our New Beauty Pro Durm partners, uh, Dr.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Doris Day, Dr.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Ava Shambhan, some past partners.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: And just seeing them in person, reconnecting, hearing everything that they're working on and studying right now, it just lights me up.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I am just ecstatic to be here.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And that's such a great sort of recap of your brand, your magazine, which has been so valued by dermatologists.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It really has been, I would say, the most credible resource on topical skin care, on procedures.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, you really have had a valued place in the dermatologist's world.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So thank you for that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, of course.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So important.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: And also I know that there's aestheticians involved here at the summit as well, which I'm not able to get into on this trip, but in the future, um, I would love to learn more about the different tracks and how the dermatologists are involved and the aestheticians are involved at New Beauty.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: We're writing with both of those um experts and working with them as resources all the time.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And uh, when I looked at the attendee list for the summit, it was really neat to see it's almost like the pages of New Beauty are bring being brought to light.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Lots of life.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, and with all the different booths and seeing a lot of our brand partners here, it's just really fantastic.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's so great.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we we value the aestheticians, and we have an incredible aesthetician track, so they have their own learning experience and they love learning from each other.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And we from very early on, uh, we were given advice by one of the aestheticians who's in industry, works for a manufacturing company, said, You gotta do something for aestheticians.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Ted and I are like, Yes, yes, why not?
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and they have become a huge part of this meeting.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Some of them have their brands uh represented here.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, you know, they're movers and shakers in the skincare industry, without a doubt.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Let's let's go again into some things.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: You know, you came for the social media for the Durham Fluencer program.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And you know, market research shows that social media is playing a tremendous role in the skincare industry.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: 71% of global consumers reported that they discovered a new skincare product on social media.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: No surprise, particularly the Gen Zs and the Millennials.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is really their search engine now.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: This is where they go for information on skincare.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So, how do you see the role of influencers?
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Talk to me about how you, as again, a very trusted source for information on beauty, look at the whole landscape of social media.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: So, as a journalist, the influencer space is interesting because we spend so much time fact-checking and vetting all of our stories and all of our content before it goes live.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: So when the influencer, you know, bubble became bigger and bigger, we were skeptical and we still are skeptical.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I think that that is a lot of what we learned today at the Durham Fluencer panel that we just attended, is that there are a lot of influencers that have become household names, and the influencers really are the tastemakers of this generation.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: They are the they are the home shopping network of today, right?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: They're they're there to entice you.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: We have TikTok, TikTok to shop.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Um, we have affiliate marketing everywhere, and um, but it's really, you know, it comes down to who are you trusting.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And I think that, you know, we we thought the influencer bubble was maybe gonna pop about five, six years ago, and it hasn't.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: It's only become larger and larger.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: And I think one of the really interesting things is that we're not only seeing the success that influencers can bring brands, we, you know, we're seeing products sell out constantly when they're talked about by a major influencer, but we can also, we are also seeing the downside where a, you know, uh an influencer can take a brand down with one post, um, you know, posting about a shortcoming that they found with the brand, a wrong shade.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: And we've seen brands completely collapse because of that.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: So there's there's the power of the influencer.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Very, very powerful.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: That's incredible.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: That's so interesting.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: I've not heard that before.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: I guess the the positive comments go one direction, and the negative comments can certainly go the other way.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Very powerful.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: So, you know, how do you differentiate?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, we heard a lot today in that session, and by the way, we had all so many great influencers in there.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: They were all derm influencers, but how do you differentiate between, you know, the skincare influencers and then the derm fluencers?
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: So I love this question because skincare influencers and you know, just beauty and lifestyle influencers overall.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Um, I it's a cautionary tale for me because I get questions from my social circle and my friends all the time, and they're like, oh, so-and-so big influencer loves this product and I'm gonna buy it.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: And I said, Well, hold on a second.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: You know, she's like her, you know, mommy blogger from middle America, and it's great that she loves that product, but has she tested it against the competition?
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Has she um does she have any credentials in skincare?
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Does she have does she is she a board certified dermatologist?
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Does she have an aesthetician license?
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Like, what what does this person bring to the table?
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Why are you taking her opinion so seriously?
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And I uh with der influencers, those are the people that are really the the the biggest voice that we should be listening to in this space.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: I think that you if you if you like what you see the other influencers using, go and check that against a derm influencer.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And maybe you'll be surprised.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Maybe they like it, maybe they don't.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Um, but I would be if I was looking for a skincare product, I would 100% choose a der influencer's recommendation over any other influencer on social media all the time.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: If it's makeup, sure.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Sally says it's great, go for it.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: But if it's skincare, trust the the individuals who are in the treatment room every day, seeing patients.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: They're they're also not just seeing patients, but they're traveling the world, going to conferences.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: They know what's worth the hype and what's not.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: They also know what's coming next, they know the contraindications of certain skincare ingredients.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: That's who you want to trust.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: You want the credentials.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: They went to medical school for a reason, and they're the ones that you should be getting advice from.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and I we heard so much about it today about dispelling the myths, and um, and there was discussion of the ethical ramifications of being a derm fluencer and you know, staying true to your medical background.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: And I agree.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, I follow a lot of my friends and they give such great advice.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: I think some of the feeds are just so rich with scientific information.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: And you know what else I think is really, really cool is that as a journalist, I am looking to these board-certified derms on social, these derm fluencers, actually for ideas for my content.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Like their reach is so powerful and so wide.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: And I in in the panel today, I was just sitting there with, you know, looking at Dr.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Liu, Jenny Liu, and looking at Dr.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Doris Day.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: And Dr.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Day inspired an entire story that I wrote on New Beauty.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Um, she has a really great post I suggest to everybody check out.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: And it says, The life-changing habits I made after age 50.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: And I took that and I said, Well, what if we went out to dermat other dermatologists and asked them what are their life-changing habits they made after 50?
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: And it became a really viral post for us.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: And it was it was really neat because it expanded beyond skincare.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Some of the derms were like, I stopped drinking alcohol, I started doing this, and it's just so comprehensive, but their content, it it's it spirals into other content.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: And um, I thought that was really neat about the panel today.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: It's like, how can you becoming a derm inferm fluencer, but you don't even realize that your reach is inspiring so many other things.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: You know, I interviewed Doris a couple weeks ago on menopause because you know she's very big on that, and we had a great conversation.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: But something she said today on the podium that I really thought was thoughtful is she said, quit racking your brain for ideas.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Your office is full of patients asking questions every day and all day.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: It's like a constant flow of questions.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: So she's like, the in the material's right in front of you.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: And it's so true.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: You know, as a dermatologist, you're just fending off questions all day long.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: And I loved what they also said during the panel.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think it was Dr.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: Day or Dr.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: Zubritsky that said that, you know, the things that we think, and especially even myself being a beauty editor for 15 plus years, the things that we think, the stories that have been told over and over that we think are just common knowledge, the average person probably doesn't feel that way.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: So, you know, um, I think that that's a great point as well, is that there's just a constant flow of education to be had.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: And thanks to these der influencers, um, we have a trusted source.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you can see just by the response how many people were in that room listening.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And you know, everybody's on social media.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, you have to be on social media now.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: So I just thought it was it was so well done and so thoughtfully done.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: And we have to thank Event.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: They've sponsored it two years in a row for us.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: We're eternally grateful to them.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they brought this program to life.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Mimi Banks, and I mean, it's a really Lisa Boris.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, yes, Lisa Morris.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: And I mean, it's just it's fantastic.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: I uh yes, thank you to the event team.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: I they're the reason that I'm also here in attendance as the first media outlet.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: They they realized that there were stories to be told from from today's panel and from the show in general, and I um I hundred percent agree.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: So I'm just so happy and that we're meeting for the first time.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So great.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Well, we'll hope you'll be back next year.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Let's just talk for one second before we wrap.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: I know you are on the cutting edge of the whole the whole industry.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: What do you really see trending that you find really interesting?
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: You know, where do you see us going?
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Well, that is what I love so much about my job.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: The reason I've stayed in this in the beauty space for so long is the innovation.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: It really is just there's so much that the US hasn't even, you know, we're on the cusp of it.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: And um, and I I'm excited to see where we're headed.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: And I think there's a few things that I'm really excited about.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: The first one being this regenerative skincare space and exosomes and secret homes.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Um, then the longevity conversation we're having now and all these growth factors and proteins and what they can do for our skin to help it act younger.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I'm in my late 30s, and that's something that I'm very look looking forward to learning about more and how I can do that for my own skin.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Um, they're actually banking these stem cell follicles from your hair, and we're gonna, you know, be able to access those later on to look younger.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's fascinating stuff.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Um and then also the sunscreen filter conversation.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: I feel like a lot of people are talking about that here today.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: I heard some chatter um in the show, and you know, we could potentially be getting a new filter maybe in 2027, fingers crossed.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Fingers crossed.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: And you know, just we constantly write about the uh how the US is kind of not kind of very behind compared to the EU, and I'll show you how to do it.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Really behind.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited about that.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Yes, and and thank you for covering that subject.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: It's so important to us as dermatologists.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: In fact, the scientist who's bringing the new filter in is here at the meeting.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: So we're super excited to have him here.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And you know, he's he's slugging it out at the FDA, which is what you have to do to get a sunscreen approved in the United States.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: It's been over 20 years since there is a 20 years without a new filter.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: It's unbelievable.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: But you guys have done such a great job.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Prevention is everything.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Yes, you know, things that I think are interesting.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: I agree with you 100% on the regenerative and longevity play, fascinating.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: But you know, we're really entering an era era of like hyper-personalized skincare.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, people don't really want to use what their friends use, they really want the me.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: And artificial intelligence is gonna play a huge role in that.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's actually that was my one of my other bullet points.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, is the the AI app, the skin diagnostic app.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: So cool.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: So I know La Roche Posey has one, L'Oreal, um Neutral Jane has got one.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, and um Elemis has one, and Vichy has one, I think.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: There's so many of them.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: And I will just say as well, though, that is a space that requires investment because we have played around with them at New Beauty.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: We've had a lot of team members try them, and there's still a lot of areas for refinement in terms of skin of color and certain diagnostics.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: It's not it, it does need, you know, but this is the early stage, and I'm really excited to see where it goes.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, so AI skin diagnostic is going to be a fascinating area of exploration for the future.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: It's changing everything in medicine and in skin care.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: We even see companies using AI to call through ingredients to pick out ingredients.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just fascinating.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: And Dr.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Zubritsky was talking about AI today for helping to generate social content, going to AI to say, what are the trends on TikTok right now?
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: And in two seconds, one second, you can get a list.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So, for anybody who's listening that's interested in a little bit of what was talked about on the panel today, it was really trying to be strategic with ChatGPT and the other AI um diagnostic tools to learn more about how you can build your own platform.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: That's so smart.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: That is a great idea.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: I'm a perplexity girl myself.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: I literally live for perplexity.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Yes, I I don't even Google anymore.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: Do you Google?
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: I've got everything.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: But we were saying that chat the all the um the AI diagnostics when you you get those Google results now.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, and we want to see the sources highlighted a little bit more too, because you know it's it's gives you the little link to click.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: But I want the credit to come to the places where it's due.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: So that but that will come with time.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's nice to see New Beauty in some of those skincare searches in the AI overview.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: There are in a lot of things that I search, it's amazing.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Well, listen, I cannot thank you enough for being here.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: We're so honored to have New Beauty here and to have you here.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And you really just did an incredible job.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: So thank you very much for that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: This is a fantastic summit and podcast, and it's an honor to be amongst so many wonderful people in this community.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: So, for everybody who's listening, thank you so much.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: I hope you enjoyed this episode of Skin Care Confidential.
