[rock music] All right, we're gonna get into this.
• 0:22
Here we go. Uh, Chewy's Lawn Chair number 38. I thought it was 35. [laughs] Nobody's keeping track. Yeah, okay, keep tracking, right.
• 0:29
Um, this is a, uh, retake, at, at best, um, of a podcast that we tried to do that was so god-awful that we, that for once in our life all of us agreed that we're not doing it. Yeah. And we did a new one. So,
• 0:43
uh, tonight- And that was on a Monday. [laughs] I know. It wasn't recent. Well, hey, what's today? Uh, shit, is today a Monday? [laughs] Yes. It is. Let me get it. So a week ago we did a podcast and it didn't work out.
• 0:54
Our, our boss has been chewing our ass out because our podcasts have been few and far between lately. Um- Mm-hmm... this one is going to deal, um, with, um... Well, let's, let's put it this way.
• 1:06
The last one was after a local club meeting that we had, and, um, and it's Spinner Nights night, and Shannon may join us after a bit if she gets her butt back down here. But, um, it was after a club meeting, and [laughs]
• 1:20
one of our best friends, uh, brought far too many beers, and we were too drunk to do a podcast, and we- We tried... we, we maybe got a little out of hand, so we decided to cancel it and go back.
• 1:30
Because, to be honest with you, this is a very se- serious subject, and it's, it's taken a bit of a twist on my part. Yeah. Oh my God, there's Shannon. Her boobs are laid out. [laughs] Um, we, uh, um...
• 1:43
So tonight was gonna be cool. So a week ago tonight we did po- we did a, a club meeting where, um, there's a pro- A human, a human-powered trails meeting. Yeah. Yeah. Yep.
• 1:52
And then, and there's a project going on here in Decorah that's- Not human powered. [laughs] Well, it's not, [laughs] or not human-made probably, other than parts of it.
• 2:01
The cool thing about it is it's a very, it's a very cool project that's, um... How do I put it? It's, it's, it's in an area that we... it was donated to us quite a few years ago. Um- 110-acre park we had donated.
• 2:16
[laughs] K- so when, as we were talking about it tonight, the funniest part was, was, um, when, when they said, "Yeah, then DHCP guys went and walked it." That's when I got my last DWI. [laughs] Coming back from that.
• 2:28
Um- Oh, from that, up in Carlson? So we went s- 'cause... So Catherine and I went riding while Deke was working. Okay. And we got done, we had a beer. I think we had a beer, we went riding, we had another beer.
• 2:37
We were... And then we went out and did the tr- we walked that whole thing, and it was a mess out there. You know, we found that farm with windmills and all that kind of stuff. Yeah.
• 2:44
We just, we walked the property, tried to figure out the lines. We were out there forever. Came back, had a beer. I drove back to Rochester, and- That was a night...
• 2:52
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, "Dude, I had five beers in, like, seven hours." They go, "Yeah, but you haven't ate or drank anything." Yeah. And so I got dinged. So it, that's, that's neither here there, and that's not...
• 3:01
The Carlson Project is a, is an interesting thing because, um, I think what you're going to hear is the two of us mostly bitch about the way trails are being built,
• 3:14
trails are being sponsored or paid for, and how it's become a fucking industry- Yeah... basically.
• 3:20
Uh, um, and then, and then, I don't know if I've told you this part, but there's, there's another part of it that's kicked in that's made me even madder about the whole situation.
• 3:27
Well, that's a Rochester deal, not down here, right? It's not down here, right. But it, but it, but it sort of ties in, it kind of falls into the same idea. Um- Where people are thinking that they need...
• 3:36
Well, the groups are, are... I don't know that they say they need it, but they want these super expensive bill. Ev- they- they're trying to replicate Bentonville and, uh- Yes... Cayuna. Yeah, there's...
• 3:47
Yeah, and, and Virginia. Mm-hmm. Up, up in Minnesota. Um, they're... I, I, um... Well, okay, let's just go, let's go back over.
• 3:54
The Carlson Project is a 110-acre spot down here in Decorah that was donated by a family to build multi-use trails. And, and it's a, it... Don't get me wrong, the project is a great idea. Yeah, it is.
• 4:08
Um, the first, the first two years they just built, let's put it nothing more than walking and hiking trails. They're 20 feet wide, they're- Uh, walking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Yeah. Yeah.
• 4:17
They're awesome trails. They're... I, I'll go up there. So from my house here up there- Mm-hmm... go and do two loops, it's, like, two miles. Yeah. It's easy, right? But it's fun. It's, it...
• 4:25
You go up there and get a little bit of workout. The climb up to the place is more than n- of a workout than riding the trails, when you think about it, from my house. Yeah. Right? Yeah.
• 4:34
And their setup is not single track. It's set up so that Park and Rec can drive a mower through there. Right. So- Yeah... it's not, it's not in the woods.
• 4:41
It's in a kind of a prairie with, like, brambles, and there's some pine trees here and there, but it's mostly grass, and kinda... I don't know. What would you call that? Bramble stuff, and, uh- Oh. Yeah, there's no-...
• 4:51
buckthorn... there, there's just some buckthorn, yeah. Yeah. So it's, it's not in the woods. It's not single track today. It's, it's cross-country ski trails. Right. And it, and it's, and it's very nice for what it is.
• 5:01
This is gonna be interesting. Those are the loudest shoes I've ever heard. [laughs] She... That, that... Sorry, dear, but that screen is not gonna keep him out of there. Hank, come on, bud. That'll work.
• 5:11
Hank is special guest. Yeah, special guest Hank. Mm-hmm. No. No, so- And she, yeah. So- I mean, it is a good project. They're, they're doing the, it's different trails than we've had down here. What? And we're just,
• 5:23
um... It, there's a little bit of shocker for the cost and how much work it's gonna be and how much work it's been so far, but I mean, to, to be honest, it's, you know...
• 5:31
The guys that are on Park and Rec that are pushing this through are getting Park and Rec to actually fund trails for a change. [laughs] Well, um, that...
• 5:39
Okay, so I'm gonna hold off on the funding part of it to start with until, until Shannon can join us. She's busy with puppies right now. Um- Um, but to start the conversation for you and I, um- We saved that for you.
• 5:53
Thank you. [laughs] We, we've been, we've been concerned about the direction trails have been going for a while. That's true. So, so this is just, like, this is nothing more than, uh, bringing it to a head maybe.
• 6:06
I don't know. Yeah. It, it's, it's not, um- There's... Yeah. Oh, if you go to some races, you get that cool stuff. Mm-hmm. Hey, and Shannon joined us. Yeah. Hey, I'm late to the game. Oh, you're always late to the game.
• 6:19
Anyway, um, so okay, let's start from the very beginning then. So- How did- How this went down was is that the Carlson family donated 110 acres. Yeah.
• 6:27
And then a bunch of us went out, walked it, looked at it, DHCP people. Um, I, I'm not gonna... I, I wanna give Furman and Benji a ton of credit because they've- Mm... worked really hard. They're on the Park Board.
• 6:40
Um, Park Board flat out said that they want this done in, in their words, the right way. Yeah. Right? Which there's become... And since we started building trails in the early '90s until now, there has become a process.
• 6:53
Yeah. And I, and this is where you and I will agree and everybody else might disagree, that the process has failed. Yeah, but they've invested a ton of time- Mm... like trying to make it work. Well, right, and- Right?
• 7:03
And, and, and w- maybe we're really lucky here because we have our old trails, and we have the new stuff, which is fantastic. We're lucky. I mean, we're really lucky for that.
• 7:11
But look at the amount of money they're gonna stick into that. And, and, and the reason why I wanted Shannon here tonight was because Rotary donated 10 grand? 12,000. 12,000, is that what it ended up being? Yeah.
• 7:22
Yeah, I mean, they, they, they originally came through and said five, and then they, they bumped it up to 12. And they gave... So there's a cool trailhead that's going in, and I do like it.
• 7:30
Not because I helped build it, but just 'cause I like it because there's a trailhead, and the only way you can get there is hike or bike. Mm-hmm. It's not on the parking lot. It's not at the- Yeah... very beginning.
• 7:39
It's, it's off in the woods a bit, but you can see it from the road. But it's there, and, and, and it's, and it's, it's a, it's a... What do they call it? A Ben Zebo.
• 7:48
A Ben Ze- A Ben Ze- Yeah, yeah, it's- The Rotary Hot Ben Zebo. Yeah. Yeah, and it's really cool. And then we had fun building it, and it was a, it was a great idea, and I like the fact that you can't get there by car.
• 8:00
It's gonna be, it's gonna be somewhat secluded, but not really. But it's... So it's a very cool idea. I mean, I, and I, and I thank Rotary for doing it because, um, that's a lot of money you gotta stick into it.
• 8:10
And, and between, what? Would you say 50/50 Rotary guys and, and DHCP guys that helped out? Um, I, like I would... Like Park Rec guys were there too. Oh, yeah. So I would say it's like 30, 30, 30. Okay.
• 8:24
Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. 33, 33. 33. Like, yeah. Hey, can you say Ra- can you say Rotary for me? Rotary. Hey, look at that. Last time we did this- R-O-T-A-R-Y. Oh, she can- That spells Rotary.
• 8:36
[laughs] You couldn't say it last Monday probably. I mean [laughs] No, not even a l- not even a little bit. It wa- Wow None of it's good... but after hour two, she could finally say it. Thanks, guys.
• 8:44
But, yeah [laughs] I appreciate that. But it, it's... A- and the fact that Rotary kicked into something that was... So look at it this way. Rotary put in their money, and they're kind of out of it.
• 8:53
I mean, sh- I'll, I'll guarantee you if work comes up and they need help, they'll join in to help. Yeah. But they already stick $12,000 into this.
• 8:59
And they're, and they're build- looking at building the next part of the trail is 250,000? Yeah. So that's a big...
• 9:05
So yeah, most of our single track that we built here is volunteers, 30 packs and tools, and handmade single track, classic built s- single track. This is gonna be, when you think about the Bentonville kinda una...
• 9:16
I mean, Rock Solid's gonna put a bid in on it. Um, it was designed by IMBA Trail Solutions and Mike Rekiak in that group. Um, so this is gonna be I guess what they call professionally built,
• 9:28
um, I don't know, mountain bike trails. It's not single track. The... I don't know what, what they call it. Right. Yeah, I don't, I don't...
• 9:33
Yeah, I, i- it's, I- But there, there's a hefty price tag, and it's something like it's between seven and $12 a foot. Is that what it usually- Really? Oh, is it? Oh. That's crazy. Yeah. Yeah.
• 9:42
But that's like moving dirt, packing dirt. I mean, they might put down some like base layer and rock and stuff like that too. So I mean, I don't... The ground out there is kind of goofy.
• 9:51
I don't know if that's rock or what that is. Well, it's- I think it's a mix of like limestone and like- Just like everything else... rock and like- Well-... everything is.
• 9:58
It's like the, the weird like karst topography... your stepson just went in to bother your daughter. Um, [laughs] um- He's not a problem... the weird, the, the weird thing about- It's children...
• 10:07
so the weird thing about that is, is it's probably different than what happens up in Minnesota. So like a lot of places in Minnesota, like our trails in Eastwood let's say,
• 10:15
they moved dirt away and piled it up, and that's Eastwood Park off of Highway 14. I would assume that this was nine, they just dynamited through it, and then that was what was left over over there, don't you think?
• 10:28
I mean, there's like, there's like nothing on, on Carlson property that has anything to do with the road construction. I don't know. I... I would think. Well, what do you mean? Like- I don't have any comment on that...
• 10:38
well, the, the, the, the pock- Like you understand?... the, the dirt, the, the dirt, the soil where it, where we're gonna be building trails on is what was there. Like on the land that Carlson donated? Yeah, yeah.
• 10:48
Whether then, rather than like, so like say, um, up at Buck Hill Ski Area, that's all off the Highway 35 project. Um, some of the stuff in Eastwood is like where they moved dirt- Oh, okay... out of the way.
• 11:01
So it's not, it's not necessarily as sustainable as it is because it's not natural. It's like you just piled a bunch of shit together and built a trail on top of it. Yeah.
• 11:09
So it's a, it's a b- it's a bit of a different setup. Um, I think Carlson's just seems to me like it was part of their property that's like- It's 100% natural. Yeah. I mean, that's the way it was- Yeah...
• 11:19
when they donated it. So that's, so that's... Then, then as we build trails, it's gonna see what happens, but I'm under the impression that they're gonna build trails on top of this stuff.
• 11:28
Like they're gonna bring stuff in and pack it. They want it to be, like you said- Mm... they want it to be a Bentonville. Yeah.
• 11:32
And- Well, you can see that, like the trails that we saw tonight on the video, like there's three feet of gravel just stacked up, you know, in the middle of what they were riding.
• 11:40
I don't know if you guys saw that- Yeah... but like where the berms are and stuff, that's not in the dirt. No, right. They, they made stuff on top of stuff, so. Right. And I, and I-
• 11:48
But do you think that's what their goal is here? I have no idea- Yes... what the goal is. I, I think it is. I do. I'm not sure. I mean- Like I'm not like totally sure.
• 11:55
Well, I- I feel like those are videos that like they pulled together to like show everybody like what it could be, right? Well, and they, and they admitted that there's no way it's gonna be Bentonville. Yeah.
• 12:04
It's gonna be that because they can't af- first of all, they can't afford it. Um, it... so it'll be used, it'll be used as much natural, but there'll be... The number of switchbacks to get up to-
• 12:14
Up to the, the grain bin- Right... is probably as much as we have on all of, all of, um, the rest of the trails in Decorah. Yeah.
• 12:23
I mean, it's a- They're trying to use that space- Yeah, I mean, it's- They're trying to use it as much as they can. It- i- th- it makes it easier to ride. And I, and I- Right...
• 12:29
and, and so, and so again, um, for the high school races I think it's brilliant because that's what, that's the stuff. High school races struggle to find places to ride because they're too technical.
• 12:40
And, and that doesn't mean that they're really hard to ride, they're just too technical for kids that are just learning how to race. For young kids. Or ride. Right. Right. So it, it, it makes sense. Fair.
• 12:46
So this is gonna be... This is going to be a great spot to ride. I don't know if Spinner and I will ever go out there other than maybe a drunken ride for something to do, but I mean, I don't see us...
• 12:56
I don't like that stuff. I mean- That's the problem. I, I, I won't say I don't like it, I just don't get excited about it. I don't get excited about flow trails, and I just, I'd prefer to be in the woods.
• 13:07
Um, I wanna support it, but it's not something like, "Hey, let's go ride this [laughs] new flow trail." [laughs] Yeah. Well, no, and then, and then, and then... Okay, I'm gonna do it anyway. All right.
• 13:17
'Cause I- So, so here's, here's gonna be my comment, like take two- Okay... on that whole thing. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] 'Cause it didn't really work out the first time.
• 13:25
But like, what you're saying, like makes total sense. Mm-hmm. Like, it's not your thing. Yeah. But I think there's a whole bunch of other people who will like it- Yeah...
• 13:34
and that's gonna pull them off of, like the single tracks that you love to ride- Yeah... and get them out of your space. Yeah. And that's why I say I wanna support it. Yeah. I've just, it's...
• 13:45
I just don't get excited about it. So I, yeah, I don't- No. I'm not trying, I'm not trying to sound negative about it, it's just- No... I just- I get it. Yeah, go ahead. You're not gonna ride it.
• 13:52
You're, it's not your thing. Okay, good. So you two guys be all positive about it and I'll be the negative one. No. Because I do- Really? No, th- That, that- Honestly, you start me...
• 13:58
there's not a lot of reason to be negative about it.
• 14:01
The only negative that I'm worried about is that the funding is gonna pull so much money for so long when DHPT needs 5,000 for a new tool, and everybody's like, "Well, we already donated everything we have to Carlson."
• 14:13
I'm a little bit worried about that. Well- But I think that's where you need to jump in and like get in front of it. Well, I, I think we did the last meeting at that one because we were against it.
• 14:23
Um, they were talking about donating $5,000, and we're like- Right. Taking $5,000- But, yeah, so-... out of our DHPT fund, which has- So there's-...
• 14:29
less than $20,000 and giving it to this project that has already 60,000 in the bank- The, the problem-... is a little tough to swallow... yeah. The problem is, is that, and Benji's really good about...
• 14:37
Benji is fantastic on top of this stuff, and he's on the park board. So we have $19,000 in our account with the city, and technically that's our money to use toward the trails.
• 14:48
However, as with a lot of them, if the city decides they wanna use that money, they can take it, and they, and they... And like in Minnesota they say, "You can take it, but you have to pay it back."
• 14:58
There's no date when they said you have to pay it back, but they'll pay it back sometime. Benji's afraid that we're gonna lose it totally. Yeah. So- That you're gonna totally lose your DH- You, you, you could lose-...
• 15:09
PT stuff. Uh, something on the state legisla- uh, state level that we could possibly lose that. They're gonna lose...
• 15:16
They're talking about taking away park department jobs and, and, and moving, and making, and, and making things smaller, and so that could possibly mean that that money goes towards something else. Yeah.
• 15:26
So taking 5,000 of it- You went in there. Yeah.
• 15:30
Taking $5,000 of, of that money and then donating it, and at the same time now we've got eight- somebody that will match that, so that's turned into $10,000 toward that project. Yeah.
• 15:40
I guess, I guess at first I was d- I dead set against it. Now I'm, I like it because, because it's... We've taken our money and put it s- It separates projects, right? Yes. Right. Yeah.
• 15:49
So, like the stuff that you guys do- Yeah... goes to where you want it, yeah. My thought was, the reason I was dead set against it to start with was, is we have $19,000 in there.
• 15:56
We spend, I don't know, we pay- I think we had like 17, but yeah. So we pay- We-... the kids in the summer. Yep. All together probably 5,000. Yeah. Um, I don't know. Like how...
• 16:07
I've never asked for gas money or anything like that, but what is it, what's, how much gas we go through with the chainsaws and weed eaters and stuff. Yeah. You know?
• 16:13
And Purchase doing a really good job of keeping track of all that. He's keeping track of man hours that are beyond what our paid guys get, all the hours that the rest of us put in. Mm-hmm.
• 16:21
Just so that they have an idea how much we're, effort we're putting into this stuff. And, you know, you gotta go out there and run the DR for a day, that's eight hours on the DR.
• 16:29
Granted, maybe only takes three gallons of gas, but it's wear and tear for eight hours. That's a lot of cutting. Yeah. Um- And all those tools. Yeah. Everything.
• 16:38
All those small gas, small gas engines and- And, and I- and if we knew for a fact that that,
• 16:43
that 17, $19,000, whatever it is, would stay there to be used on those trails, I would leave it there and say no to the 5,000 because I want that money to help us pay the kids, or pay the guys that work on the trails, or buy new tools to take care of the trails.
• 16:57
Whether... and I don't care if the trails are there or over in Carlson, that's like $17,000 of guaranteed money to work. That's, that's, that's only like three years worth of money. Right. It doesn't last forever. Right.
• 17:08
  So that, so- Right...
• 17:09
so once they said there's a possibility that we could lose that money, and I've, and I've seen it happen in Minnesota so I, I'm, I kinda get where they're coming from, I'm okay with donating that 5,000. Yeah.
• 17:19
And- And I was too... and, and, and, and after tonight, so b- changed this up a little bit last [laughs] Monday night when we got together.
• 17:26
It was our club meeting, and so we got really hammered afterward and we're talking shit about certain people in town- Wait, what?... and business. [laughs] Yeah. Uh, uh, our best friends and lifelong pals no more.
• 17:36
[laughs] Um, but no, after tonight's meeting, we, so we went to one, um... Tonight there was a meeting for just the Carlson Trail- Thanks... where they actually sat down and explained everything to everybody.
• 17:48
Where it's going, what they wanna do, how much money they're gonna need, how they're writing grants. [door closes] See me go outside? Yeah, I got it. Okay. Thank you. Um, I was- And this is a separate meeting.
• 17:59
That's maybe important distinction. So Decorah Human Powered Trails and the Carlson Park Project are different- Yes... there's different groups. There's people from both groups in there, but it- Yeah...
• 18:08
but it's totally for me- In a town like this there's gonna be... and this was, and this was definitely a fundraiser. We were... This was to bring people in and try to convince them to kick in a little more cash.
• 18:16
And recognize the people that have kicked in cash. Yes. They, they did a very nice job of that. I th- I thought they did a... I thought it was very well run. Yeah. Benji's fantastic.
• 18:23
I don't care what anybody says, Benji's fantastic at doing this stuff, and he's a good fundraiser and he understands what he's doing. So that was, all in all, it was a great meeting tonight.
• 18:31
It- I don't wanna say it opened my eyes a little bit more. It made me slightly more comfortable that... And, and you left, um, I voiced my opinion about what was gonna happen over there. Yeah.
• 18:43
And a couple people jumped in and s- they had a discussion about it, and they're like, "No, no, no. We understand what you guys want. We know that we need to take care of that." Okay. You know? Yeah.
• 18:52
So when you say that, you're saying- But-... the classic single track versus- Yes. Right. Yeah... 'cause you're pointing fingers, but- Oh, yeah [laughs]...
• 18:57
they can't see your finger in the radio [laughs] Oh, that's true. We're not... Ah, that's right. We're not on TV yet. We gotta- We're not on video. Ah, that's the next thing we gotta do. Mm-hmm. Um, so yeah.
• 19:03
No, that's good. I mean, that, that's, that was a good distinction. Oh, you had a, I had a point that you brought up and I, I missed it. It'll come back. Okay. But, um- Do you want me to sit and wait? No.
• 19:13
[laughs] Well, I didn't leave early. I mean, I left after- No, no, no, no. So, um, about, about- But that's kinda why I went up there, too, because, you know- Yeah... I'm still on the fence about the thing.
• 19:20
I do wanna support it, but I wanna know more about what the plan is, and now we, I think we- I-... got a better picture... I think I've- Oh, the money. Oh, yeah... the money that they've raised so far.
• 19:28
So phase one, they, they m- they're asking or estimated, like, half a million, and they got- Yeah... $250,000 already. Right.
• 19:35
So I mean, I don't know how long they've been raising money, but they're already at a quarter million dollars. They could... I, I wa- I, you know, and I don't know. I don't do this stuff. I don't like fundraising.
• 19:45
I don't, either. I, I... It makes me itchy. I don't like it either. I don't know, and this is part, this is the other part. Shannon's really good at it. So I was told tonight that, like, the s- You guys talking about me?
• 19:54
Sorry. [laughs] Sorry. Do you, do you mind if you put your heads up for it? I was told tonight that the $65,000 that were put up on the table- Yep... what's going on here?
• 20:04
Just think if you'd have been drunk trying to do this. [laughs] Oh, my God. Did you break it? I don't know what's happening. It's inside out. I don't know. I, I'm just gonna go on one side.
• 20:12
[laughs] The $65,000, like, matching thing that was put up on the table between Wix and Clokeys and whoever the anonymous was, it's been matched. It has been matched. It's, like, all good. 100%. That's cool.
• 20:27
Which is very cool. And, and I, I talked, we talked- Well, and us. DHBT was- We took, we took-... 5,000 of it. Yeah. We talked to Clokey. He, he's like, "I don't have time." He goes, he goes...
• 20:36
Hi- his, his point to me tonight was, um, and you talked to him more than I did, but he's like- Yeah... he goes, "I watched-" We talked about skiing, though. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Weirdos. We're gonna go skiing.
• 20:45
Are ya? [laughs] Yeah. Out there? Hell, you guys can do whatever. Downhill. That is... Okay. Right. That's different. Yeah. Yeah. Both of them, he's getting his knee replaced, and she's got bad knees.
• 20:53
That ought to be awesome. Okay. A couple cripples- It'll be great... out there on the course. [laughs] Um, but he was saying that his donation is basically his contribution.
• 21:04
He goes, "I've been riding these trails forever." He goes, "I've seen you out here forever. I've seen Spinner out here forever." He goes, "Guys, Deke, all those guys have been laying out trails."
• 21:11
Like, they were talking about no maps. Deke has been laying out maps forever. Yeah, he has. Yeah, and, and so he goes, "All these years of, our, the time you put in," he goes, "I've done nothing."
• 21:19
He goes, "So the best I can do right now is to kick in cash." So he tho- they threw in $5,000. Yeah. He and, he and Marla- I get that.
• 21:27
Like, they're- [laughs] They threw it out to the machine so that $5,000- Yeah, well- Yeah... well, you know what?... would be spent... that's where he's g- that's- To the matching... w- w- To the matching fund...
• 21:34
once he's done this- Sure... it's probably the only place he's gonna be riding, and he admitted that. Okay. Yeah. So- But here's the deal, though.
• 21:38
He didn't even start riding those trails until he was 40-something years old. Right. So it's not like he, like, grew up on them and, like... You know what I mean? He still hasn't grown up, dear. [laughs] More nuts.
• 21:50
Way more nuts. [laughs] He might, he might take offense to that, but- No, he's a, he- But you know what I mean... no, yeah, he- He didn't s- he started, like, later in life. Yes.
• 21:58
And he loves it, and he wants to keep doing it. Okay, which- And so he's trying to, like, contribute- Which-... to the cause... which thank you, 'cause it brings up a point. [laughs] Like, old people- Okay...
• 22:06
can still ride? No, it brings up a point that a lot of this conversation- [laughs]...
• 22:10
is we're like, or we're like, Sidney, you're [laughs] yeah, cover your mouth and laugh, asshole, but the further [laughs] what it really comes down to is- I just might...
• 22:17
[laughs] it comes down to is all this shit is 'cause we've all gotten fucking old and lazy. [laughs] What do you mean? I mean- I don't get it... well, not, not you maybe, but I- I feel like it's called olden ailments.
• 22:27
Yeah. Yeah. Spinner, you're the only one here doesn't have any fucking ailments, so like- [laughs] Yeah, and you? So the rest- Well, okay... the re- Hey, syphilis doesn't count. Oh, God. [laughs] I don't have it.
• 22:37
I don't have anything. I got t- I'm- Gonna react... completely clean. I will show you the whole fucking book. No, I don't wanna see. No, I was surprised, too. I was like, "Huh?" [laughs] Oh, my God.
• 22:49
[laughs] That's not even right that we're having this conversation in a podcast. [laughs] I didn't edit. I, it wasn't my idea. Good for, good for you, buddy. [laughs] Good for you.
• 22:56
Oh, but, but, but, but it really does, uh, tonight kinda kicked that out. It's like, it's like, fuck, that was an old group up there. You think about all the guys that we were hanging out with and talking about- Right...
• 23:05
building trails and riding trails, and all of a sudden, you're like, Clokey's embarrassed that he's riding an e-bike. And the, uh, I was just gonna say, we could roll it into the, like, how do you feel about an e-bike?
• 23:14
Don't even start. I'm still not gonna fucking do it. I'm still on a single speed. I don't have a geared bike. Kent and Marla both have e-bikes. I, okay, I will, I will take one step back. At 67- Mm-hmm...
• 23:24
I finally rode- Mm-hmm... I rode a geared bike off-road in Flagstaff. Okay. Okay? So I rode two miles uphill with a geared bike. The first day- Oh... that you hop on an e-bike, you're gonna- Suck it...
• 23:36
we are gonna videotape that shit and broadcast it- [laughs]... everywhere. [laughs] You know what's gonna happen?
• 23:42
The first day I'm on an e-bike, you and Spinner are gonna be on e-bikes pulling me in my casket, 'cause that's what's gonna [laughs] that's what is gonna happen. [laughs] Oh. I wouldn't do that. Ah.
• 23:53
I, I, I wouldn't do that to you. [laughs] I would pull it with a single speed. Okay, then I'm in. Yeah, yeah. [laughs] You down with that? Yeah. Well, it, it- I don't, I feel like we could do that...
• 23:58
we can talk about this next, next, next time. Yeah. But it, but it, but it c- The guy right behind me- But it- Oh, I'll talk about it tomorrow... I feel like that would be a stab at the dead. Yeah.
• 24:05
I'll talk about it tomorrow. Yeah, can't do that. Okay. But it, but it was- Oh. Oh, yeah. That we're, yeah. Yep. So we're doing th- we're doing a podcast now. Another podcast tomorrow. We're gonna keep this...
• 24:12
Fuck, we got five minutes left. We're know this is not gonna happen. But anyway, um, we're gonna do another one tomorrow that's gonna deal more with rides we've b- have been doing. Yeah. Um, I've been gone forever.
• 24:20
Hockey's been kicking my ass this year. Um, when you're three and 22- [laughs]... you, you spend a lot of time, you spend a lot of time trying to fix shit that's not getting fixed. [laughs] But, um, um-...
• 24:35
Spinner's been actually out riding. Uh, you did Sweaty Eddie and- Sweaty Eddie and, uh, Fat Tire Birkie... yeah. So, we'll, we'll, we'll do another pod- So mañana. Mañana...
• 24:42
the, the, the next pod- Yeah, tomorrow The next three... the next podcast will be about actually bike riding that people are actually doing. But right now we're just gonna go back to the trail. So,
• 24:49
the Carson project sounds like it's gonna be... I mean, when they're all done with it, they're gonna have... It, it, it could be insane. I, I like Benji's comment.
• 24:56
It was like, "A half a million dollars takes care of the trails, building them."
• 25:03
The, the other projects that the city has, um, the nice thing is, is we as bike trail people don't have to worry about that, where they're talking about- I hope not... I know. I mean, I hope they have a maintenance plan.
• 25:15
But you're talking about the parking lot and the bathrooms and all that sort of thing. Yeah, all that kind of stuff, the sh- the building. I mean, that, I get that. That's really cool. I... Maybe down here it works out.
• 25:24
It doesn't work in Minnesota. It's too cold, it doesn't work. Stuff freezes, lines, it's just- Oh, it'll be that bad here. I don't know how. They'll probably have to put in a well.
• 25:32
I don't know if they put a well out there or not. There's a, there's a windmill out there, so you probably could. There, well.
• 25:37
I, I, is- I, I do feel like he gave everybody today who showed up, though, a very realistic, like, vision- Yes, yes... of, like, what's happening. I agree. I, I mean there- It's like he didn't sugarcoat it.
• 25:48
He didn't say, "We're gonna have all this stuff in, like, a year." I mean, he just, he just really was, like, solid and just like, "This is the plan. This is what we're doing. This is what's approved."
• 25:59
And- This is how your money's protected... we have a... Yeah This is the community fund. And we have, we have a ton of, like- This is tax deductible...
• 26:03
super cool stuff planned for the future, but this is what's on the board right now. Yeah. And, and, and, and then, and then so with that, this is the shit that makes me itchy. I don't like doing this stuff.
• 26:13
Uh, the, the, the- Itchy's not good. The money raising? Just saying. Just, yeah, just, just- [laughs]... just the...
• 26:19
And I don't wanna, I don't wanna, I don't wanna make it sound like I don't like how those guys presented it, 'cause I thought they did a really good job. The fundraising piece? Yeah. Like what? I fucking hate that.
• 26:28
I do hate it too. I mean, because it, to me it's just like- Which piece and from whom? Yeah, you know where I'm going. But, but, but even- [laughs] Don't start... yeah.
• 26:35
But even, but even, but even just, just the whole pro- just the whole slideshow presentation, bringing people up there, spending eight bucks for a beer, is like, this is the shit I don't wanna do.
• 26:50
Give me a fucking shovel and let's go build a trail. Yeah. I would... And then this is, this is... And I don't, I'm not gonna say this is old school. I, I think mountain bike people in general have gotten fucking lazy.
• 27:04
And by lazy I mean, um- It's good... I can, I can throw $5,000 out there and, and you'll build me a trail that I can ride forever and take care of it, fuck yeah, I'll do that. I would do that. I would do that.
• 27:13
  $5,000 you'd... to pay for...
• 27:16
If I could build, if I could throw $5,000 into Decorah and they're gonna keep maintaining trails, and keep them up, and build more w- But is that the maintenance of existing trails, or is that like, "Let's build more," and like- Well, but that, but I think, I think the people- Give more people an opportunity to ride them.
• 27:32
Well, there's, it's both, but I think the whole thing is, is people... It's, it's, it's my old, it's my old argument all the way along.
• 27:39
Um, I'll throw money in it [dog barks] for you to build something, but who's gonna maintain it? I'll give, I'll buy you a car, right? And you can have the car. Yes, please. Yes. And, but guess what?
• 27:49
You're paying for the gas, you're paying for the insurance, you're paying for the upkeep. And by the way, when I wanna use the car, you don't get to. It's my car. [dog barks] Fuck you. [laughs] Well, that,
• 27:58
but, but that's my point. That's why, but I will say, let, let me go off that analogy, 'cause I thought about that too, but it's like, are you buying a, um, I don't know, like, an F-150 or are you buying a Lamborghini?
• 28:10
I always did a Cadillac. You know what I- [laughs] It's between them both... I mean, but, or like, yeah, okay, Chevy Lumina- Well-... or a Cadillac... yeah. Because that's the thing too, like, the cost is more.
• 28:17
It costs more to do it, the gas- So-... more to maintain it... and so going with that- Don't touch it, Nina... what is he doing in there? Yeah, I don't know.
• 28:24
This is, this is the problem when you have a 15-year-old dog that's losing his shit. So when you say mountain bikers are, are getting lazy, there's different mountain bikers now- I-... than there used to be.
• 28:32
That's- I don't think the, I don't think the riding part of it they're getting lazy. Oh, no? I think, I think people like to ride their... Well, yes, they are because they're- Well, there is some...
• 28:38
because, because they have big squishy bikes. Yeah. And then, and don't forget, I'll bet you 15 years ago, if we were doing podcasts, we would've had a podcast on how the industry is destroying bicycling. Yeah.
• 28:50
Because all they do is build more and bigger bling, and do more bling, and more bling, and more bling. They gotta, they gotta get you, you should, yeah.
• 28:57
They, they gotta, you gotta do more shit to sell, and fancier and nicer. Some of it's really good. Some of it's just another giant expense. Yeah. Right?
• 29:04
So I, I think, I think the trail building part of it is coming the same way. How many... Like,
• 29:09
10 years ago, you would've maybe found one or two places that would've been able to build you trails in the whole United States. Now there's two in every, every state. Yeah. You guys, you guys didn't even talk to Mark.
• 29:20
Who? [laughs] Mark. I mean, this is an off-road associate. N- they, they have a company that, that, out of, out of Minneapolis that does the same thing. They build all the trails. Oh, really? Yeah.
• 29:27
I mean- I didn't know... you, nobody even talked to them, and you get... Because you have local guys and local ones that are, that are Iowa versions of the same thing. Mm-hmm. And so it's, um...
• 29:36
  And I, and I don't get, and I don't mind that.
• 29:38
I just don't- I think you're getting to the point where it's like, um, you know, the stuff that we built, we built it and we built it the way we could, and, you know, we're in a very hilly area, and you need some skill to ride it.
• 29:49
We built it so that we could have the skill. But the bikes are getting better, and the trails are, the trails that they're gonna build out there are not gonna require a whole lot of skill.
• 29:57
You can go super fast and, on a bike- Yeah... and you don't necessarily need to have a lot of n- n- riding knowledge to know how to control it. And it's really funny because- But I think that's the intent though, right?
• 30:08
Yes. I, I think it is. Right? To, like, skill people up so that eventually they can ride- Oh, no, I, no, no, no... the stuff that you guys ride. I don't think that was ever- I just, I disagree.
• 30:15
I think, I think after- Really?... after our DHCP meeting last week, I think those people, that's all they want. They don't want to ride what's right over there. Really?
• 30:21
Do you remember the argument I had with one person? Which one person? Where, where I said- [laughs] Oh, like you've gotten one argument last Monday? Do you mind? Come on. [laughs] Since last week?
• 30:30
'Cause there's only one person. Yeah, well, look, there's- You get along with everybody but one... we're at the DH- [laughs] But hey, so, so my point- I get along with everybody...
• 30:36
my, okay, so here, sh- Be quiet for just one second. My, my point is if you have young kids in this town, and you want them to start riding trails, that is the perfect place for them to start riding. Sure.
• 30:50
To skill them up, to like then move them up to Van Peenen and like doing like all the other like cool trails. 100%, but- Like, why would you not do that? That being said- Why would I?
• 31:01
Why do I care about their kid getting better? What, how does that help me? That's my question. Because they're gonna kick your ass, and you're gonna- I don't think it needs, I don't think it fucking needs to help you.
• 31:09
I think it needs to help like the whole community. It's all about why. Okay, then who- Right? Then why would I pay for it?
• 31:15
And it's gonna, and it's gonna keep those kids off your trails right now, 'cause they don't have the ability to be there, right? I don't think so. I don't think we have expert trails. I, I disagree with that.
• 31:25
Oh, no, no, no, no, no. No. That was, that was, that was one of the conversations that Benji brought up today that kinda pissed me off. Tonight? It was like, he goes, "You ride these trails, you can ride everywhere."
• 31:33
Bullshit. Yeah. You and I have gone to Cinder Flats- Come to Alaska. Well- Come to Bellingham... but, but I think he's talking to the masses, right? Yeah. Like, like who else in that room- Yes...
• 31:42
other than like about five people who have ever ridden anywhere else on trails- I, I brought it up to Spinner before you got down here.
• 31:50
I said, I s- I said, "I seriously think," and, and not like we're world travelers, but I think Spinner and I have been to more places in the United States, we have rode more trails than anybody else that's talking about trails in the city.
• 32:05
Yeah. You got, you, don't get me wrong. You have a core group of people that can kick ass on these trails, and they've rode these trails forever, and they're really happy with them. Which is great.
• 32:12
Yeah, it, don't get me wrong. I'm happy with that. But when you s- when you throw a comment out there that says, that said, how did he put it? I can think about this.
• 32:20
Um, if you can go ride the trails on the, on the s- north side of the river, you can ride anywhere. That's fucking bullshit, and that's a guy that's never gone anywhere else.
• 32:29
Because I'll tell you right now, you go to Bend, Oregon, and you ride IMBA trails, which are Bentonville-type trails, and they're- Right... they are 10 times harder than any shit around here. There's, you can't...
• 32:40
If you, this is the best you can do, if you can ride, clean all this, I'll guarantee you're not gonna clean half of what you rode in Bent- in Bentonville. Right. Right.
• 32:47
I mean, I mean, so it's like- But at the same time, I will, I will s- come back and tell you that when, when SingleSpeed USA was here- Mm-hmm...
• 32:55
like there were like a, like many people who said like, "Oh my God, these trails are fucking awesome." Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. Like, "We've never ridden anything like this before," because it's so different. Right.
• 33:07
Right. So. Well, and, and, and, and to, to add to that, a- and all the races I've gone to, SingleSpeed and other races, um, I can jump on a trail and tell you when a trail's been built by IMBA.
• 33:19
The, the trees are different. Right. But the trail is the same, and I don't like it. I, I've- Oh... I've done, I've done enough of it now that I don't like it.
• 33:27
I w- if I'm gonna go to Bend, Oregon, I wanna ride shit that you guys ride. I don't wanna ride that trail. Something local. Yeah, yeah.
• 33:33
I wanna do like, so we built these over here, so, and then I'm gonna throw this in there, too. So I also got thrown underneath the bus in Rochester again because, um... Don't be stealing that. Um. I might.
• 33:45
[laughs] You got one. Whoop, now I have two. [laughs] Um, so, so after that shit on Monday, I go back to Rochester, and then I find an article that's- Sorry about the crunching...
• 33:57
that's, that's, um, basically, so this, they, they wanna build a one-and-a-half mile section in the woods on the northeast side of town. And there's locals that are bitching about it.
• 34:07
Locals, by that I mean neighborhood people. Right. And the guy that's bitching about it, um, long story short is his, his knowledge of it is nothing about mountain biking, 'cause he doesn't ride a bike.
• 34:19
He walks over there. That's his private walking place. Um, his neighbor is the daughter of a guy that I originally set up to set up the trails in Eastwood. Eastwood. We were gonna, we wanted to do Quarry Hill.
• 34:31
We both agreed Quarry Hill has too many people. [smacks lips] So we get, they gave us Eastwood to build trails in. Okay. Right? So that was, that was a compromise.
• 34:39
And, and then he went over to Eastwood and took pictures. Now, don't forget, those trails have been there for 30 years. And look at the erosion. Oh, he found the spots. And, and, yeah, yeah. No, here's the worst part.
• 34:49
He get that. The club over there threw me under the bus. "Those guys don't know what they're doing. They built those trails." Ouch. I'm like, "You miserable motherfuckers." I am like, I am so pissed off.
• 34:59
Like, like, I will go and, and I'm gonna, I'm, uh, Mark Walters is a buddy of mine, and I hated him 'cause he always built bandit trails. I'm gonna start building bandit trails. Yeah. Fuck it. You know, if you guys...
• 35:10
So d- you saw that picture? Who's gonna build what? Bandit trails.
• 35:14
Like, if you go up to the cities, and there's like Lebanon Hills, and all these different parks, and Theo Wirth, but there's also a trail through the back of a neighborhood that gets to those parks. Oh.
• 35:26
Or gets to this n- like, yeah. Bas- something you would never actually get approval for. You just go out and build it without talking to anybody. Yeah. And, and, and in certain ar- Yeah, slots... a- yeah.
• 35:32
And in c- Can I just say that?... and in certain are- in certain areas it's really cool because the s- the, the city knows they're there, and they're like, "It's not unsafe.
• 35:40
You guys are fine, and you guys maintain them. We don't have to touch them. Fucking build them." They just let it happen. "We're good." Yeah. Don't make it crazy, but if it's like, if it's like a connector between...
• 35:48
And so rather, you could ride off-road rather than riding the paved trail two miles out of your way, and you can cut through a, a, a, um... Texas has them all over the place.
• 35:57
Like, every place they have a big park in Texas, there's a shitload of mountain bike trails or hiking trails. They're just trails. They're just out there, right? People are gonna be in the woods. Yeah, yeah. Right.
• 36:04
I mean, you can't keep people off. Keep them there. I mean, that's- Right... like, you're like, "What are you gonna do, close them down?" Well, and, and- How are you gonna police that?...
• 36:09
a- and going back to the Eastwood thing, what cracks me up is they're, th- those guys are bitching about the erosion. [laughs] That's a fucking deer trail. I built, I built that trail off of where the deer walking.
• 36:18
[laughs] You don't think that that's not gonna get eroded? My fucking dogs erode my backyard from where they walk around the same spot.
• 36:24
[laughs] And it just drives me insane that there's, it, you know, and, and it's w- we've run into it in Rochester before where they, they will nitpick.
• 36:32
So like the problem is is that that was a 1992 conversation I had with the Park Department, so my name is on that, and this fucking clown- And now it's coming back to bite you... oh yeah.
• 36:42
It, this fucking clown is like using that against me. Eh, they're coming for you. He goes, "Hey, you didn't build those trails in game, in, in Quarry Hill."
• 36:49
It's like, that was a, that was a verbal agreement between everybody going, "Nah, there's too many people walking, and it's not a good place for people to walk and ride together, so we're not gonna build trails there."
• 36:58
Fine, give me another spot. And they did. They gave us Eastwood. And Eastwood growing, building, um, th- they don't even take care of it. You know, it's, it's... As again, like I said before earlier, it's built- Right...
• 37:11
where it was dirt that was thrown up there from the, from the highway project. Mm-hmm. So it's not the soil that was there. Mm. So the places that are eroding are, like, crap that was dumped on top of crap.
• 37:23
Well, everything's gonna erode. Gravel roads erode. They do gravel roads every year. I mean, th- they- Yeah... they're gonna take some maintenance.
• 37:29
And it, you know, you can fix it with a shovel, that's great, which w- we can do most of our stuff. But yeah, it just takes time, and it takes... People understand that. When a tree goes down, you go and get it out.
• 37:38
When the roots pop up, you go cut them out, whatever. Right. I mean- Yeah. And, and, and, and you and I talked about this with Gunny in the pine tree section. I... You don't like, you don't like the rutting?
• 37:48
Move the trail five feet this way or that way. Yeah, pick a better line. Because, because that new line is not gonna change anything. The, the, it's, you're still gonna get 2.2 miles out of that area.
• 37:57
You're gonna change it, and the stuff that was there before, in a year and a half, is gonna be gone, and you're not gonna even know it existed. Mm-hmm. Mm.
• 38:02
And, and Gunny had the balls to tell me that because of those trails, trees came down. Now- Because of the trails? Yes, he said the trails came down, that's why the pine trees went down.
• 38:12
And when we went up there and cut all those pine trees- Yeah, but w- but was that in the whole conversation of, like, the pine needles being, like, swept away? Yeah, yeah, all that, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 38:18
It was the pine needles and then everything he was- Yeah, I feel like that was a bigger conversation... those trails, those trails were built wrong because- Yeah, yeah. That was a big conversation... so the trees...
• 38:24
When you looked at it, none of the trees came down that were in the pi- that were near the trails. It was other ones- Yeah... that were just out there and just- And it's a trail on top in the pine trees. Who cares?
• 38:33
And, and those pi- Yeah... and, and then, uh, so- But the [laughs] funny part about it was Ken Kloke, he called him up on it today. Did he? Yes. That's what Ken Kloke, he said. He's like, he's like, "Ooh."
• 38:43
He's like, "I think I'm gonna go on the top and rake some pine leaves." [laughs] Rake some pine leaves? [laughs] Pine leaves. [laughs] Yes. And he's like, "Oh, dude, I so know what you're talking about."
• 38:51
No, it was, uh, that was, uh, that was, uh, um, was that Bachman? It was Ken- no, that was Ken Kloke. [laughs] So we have a new- Thought it was Gunner...
• 38:58
so Bachman's now, he doesn't have anything to do, so he's gonna come help build trail. So the guy who's giving- Yeah, Bachman- Yeah... like, Mike wants to come and help build stuff.
• 39:04
So the guy, so the guy who has, basically giving us his business to use for every fucking thing, time trials, whatever, we...
• 39:13
Tonight, you know, he just donates his-- He's got this beautiful building down there and he lets us use it. And now he's like, "Hey, I got nothing to do. I'm gonna come out and start working on trails." Yeah.
• 39:21
You know, that's the guy to get people- Oh, he owns the bar. Yeah. That's, that's what- The Kent Marla... he owns the bar restaurant. Yeah. Right. Yeah, yeah. The Kent Marla donated, like, $5,000 matching. Mm-hmm.
• 39:30
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Between now and, like, what is it, the 16th or 18th- Yeah... or, like, whatever. That was, that was, I w- I was like, was it, was it the banker guy that brought up the conversation about, you know...
• 39:40
Yeah, one of the bankers from The Corridor Bank being a one- Justin Gullickson?... one, three, five, uh- Gullickson?... uh, donation over time. Yeah. Well, d- yes, yes.
• 39:46
Um, I, I guess I didn't hear that part, but- Which, which I was glad somebody brought that up, 'cause I, I thought about it, but- I think it was Mike Loveless. Wasn't Gullickson got that at- It wasn't Gullickson.
• 39:54
It was- I think, is it Mike Loveless?... Mike Loveless. Mark Loveless, yeah. Does he work at the bank? I think he does. No. Okay, never mind. I don't, I don't think so, but maybe.
• 40:00
Oh, no, I, I thought it was a great- Maybe... I thought it was a great thing because that means, that means that people are actually looking f- past just- Attractions, yeah... this weekend and just building that- Yeah...
• 40:10
and building this hunk of trail. They're actually looking at things down, down the road for, whether it's building trails or maintaining trails. I mean, think about it.
• 40:16
We used to, we used to worry about taking care of 11 miles of trails. Yeah. What have we got now? Between 25 and 30. Yeah. So this, like- Okay.
• 40:24
So FYI, just so you guys have something to look forward to, I think you guys should look at doing, like, a bequest society. That's what Rotary does.
• 40:34
People can sign off and do, like, "Oh, I'm gonna, like, give $1,000 off of my life insurance policy." A bequest? Is that what you called it? A bequest society, yeah. Hmm. Guess what's a new- Yeah...
• 40:45
guess what's a new job? Ooh. [laughs] Yeah.
• 40:48
No, no, seriously though, peop- people who are still living and still, like, they don't wanna give, like, an outright donation, but they can sign off and give, like, an, you know, X percentage off of their life insurance policy or- Or their, their-...
• 41:03
or a dollar amount- Ev-... off their life insurance policy, so like when they die, that money comes back to- Hmm... the trail fund. And now that- Well-... you guys are a 501[c][3], totally works.
• 41:15
So- Like, it's right there. Like, it's, it's so easy to make that happen. Are you under 50- you're under 501[c][3], aren't you? We got a... Well, not yet. We got our documents, uh- But you're on it, right?... submitted.
• 41:25
I am on the board, yeah. Because this is your job, dude. No, it's gon- I, I think, I think that- I'm not gonna ask him for money either.
• 41:30
[laughs] No, but I, I think [laughs] I, but I think that's what Benji was- This one, good... talking about, though. Like, right, you're working on that, and I think that's- Yeah...
• 41:37
through the Winneshiek County Foundation. That is. Ours is, the DHPT is gonna be a separate, um, 501[c][3]. We got our- Which would probably- Right, but that, that-... articles of incorporation and the bylaw...
• 41:49
which would probably be better- Yes... because then- That's where you want that-... then you have total control of funds. But yeah... that's where you want that money to go to, right, yeah. Absolutely. And what... Yeah.
• 41:54
It, it, it- That's what you need... I think, I think we, I, I seriously think down here we're really lucky that we were able to ride under the city's policy for, Jesus, almost 20 years.
• 42:05
When we had the right people in the city. Well, yeah. Yeah. But I mean, I mean, just city policies in general. This has always- Sure... been a possibility and it's never really been there.
• 42:12
But, but just the fact that we got that far with it. Like, I don't think most organizations go more than five or 10 and they realize they gotta get the hell out. Yeah. So that, that's awesome. No, it's good. Absolutely.
• 42:24
So anyway, it, [laughs] from last weekend, in conclusion- [laughs] From last weekend when we were on a... Well, I still have a stall to bitch, and I, I was poli- did you notice how politely did not bring it up?
• 42:35
We talked about that. What did, what did we talk about? We talked about- Did we cover all your stuff?... Benji before you were there. We talked about the flow trail piece, and I guess- Yeah... who's gonna maintain it.
• 42:43
We, I'm not gonna worry about that. Um, we talked about I don't like we're gonna do this one right, suggesting that our classic single track was built wrong, or that it's- Oh... expert trails.
• 42:52
I just, I don't agree with that 100%. Um, but we talked about it. Um, it's a Park and Rec project.
• 42:59
Um- Hopefully if DHPT is expected to maintain it, I hope that we do get some kickback for paying all that money to build it in the first place. Park and Rec should probably pay us something to do it.
• 43:10
So we're not raising our own funds to support that in the long run. Oh, that's interesting. Right. Well, right, right, right. You know, I- But not only that, but like all the time- But don't-...
• 43:17
in, that you guys spend doing that, you guys had a bunch of people like up at the whole Ben Zebo thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I'm saying.
• 43:24
But we've already- Like we've already, DHPT has thrown a lot of time at that... you guys have a strong- I, and, and I'll be honest with you... yeah...
• 43:29
when I s- when I was up there and I started doing that, and I could have gone home and spinner and drank a lot of beer, but no, I stayed back and worked. Yeah. Oh, pretend like you're responsible. Why don't you?
• 43:37
[laughs] I'm working on this. Yeah. You got guilted into helping. Stop, stop fucking shining me now, asshole. Spinner, spinner, that's a hard fucking ask. [laughs] Don't even go there. Don't even go there.
• 43:46
No, but seriously, like when you guys log your hours about like things that you work and that you do, I feel like whoever was up there should log their hours. Oh, yeah? I hadn't thought about that.
• 43:56
'Cause like that's what gives you guys access to more grant money. Yeah. And you know, and Perch has started doing that. It is. Perch, Perch has the, you know, the, uh, trail maintenance log. Yeah. Yeah. You know?
• 44:06
And, and, and this, this probably should have been added too. This, this- I f- I feel like it should be in there... I, I honestly think that eventually, um, DHCP and Rotary do more projects than like this.
• 44:19
Like if you guys find money- We'll have more... like we have, we have like, uh- Yeah, we'll have more... if we wanna do new signage out at, on the, on our trails over this way. Yeah.
• 44:28
And, so I hate to say it that way, but that's the way I'm looking at it. Fuck yeah, go through Rotary and get the signs built, and you gotta put that stupid little fucking flag up there and wave it every now and then.
• 44:37
It pains you, doesn't it? [laughs] It kills me. Oh. [laughs] You know what you gotta do? It's so hard. But at, but at the same time- You gotta buy us that Bruning building. Ah.
• 44:43
But it's- Buy us that Bruning garage and make that a trail head... yeah, yeah, could you... Oh, [gasps] could you do that next? Can I do what next? Buy the, buy the Bruning garage- Buy the, buy the Bruning garage...
• 44:50
at the Quarry Hill Road, and then turn that into a trail. What, what? No. We'll do all of our- Trail head... we'll do all of our podcasts out of it. That'll never happen, but yeah.
• 44:56
We'll do all of our- But I feel like we can just like take over the parking lot and drink beer there. Does that count? That's- Close enough... been happening for years. [laughs] I know. I, I know. Same.
• 45:05
There used, there used to be a- Like, I feel like we're fine... there used to be a s- I feel like we're fine... there used to be a fire pit behind there. I feel like we're fine. And we're not liable this way.
• 45:10
Let's leave it as is. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Rotary does have a really good insurance policy.
• 45:13
[laughs] No, I guess, yeah, the, the last thing is like even though we talked about it, you know, we're supportive of the project. Um, it's good to know.
• 45:21
It's, you know, not something that we would wanna take on, but I'm glad it's happening here, and I'm glad the guys that are doing it are doing it, and that they're in charge of it, and we're not.
• 45:30
[laughs] No, but I feel like that's a, that's a solid response, right? Uh, uh, it, it- Right?
• 45:34
So I, I'm gonna give us three more minutes here because I'm gonna say something that's gonna make you guys go off a little bit. Um- Weird. I know. Wow. Thank you.
• 45:41
Um, so the last thing, the last thing I wanted to bitch about- Not... not do bitch about, but at the same time was there was a Facebook page that went out. Mm. Don't do it.
• 45:52
Um, what bothered me most about that, and it still did tonight- Oh, the post. Yes. Oh, yeah.
• 45:57
The, the, the, the, the business in town here that brought it up, and then, and I don't think I was, I was as mad at, at theirs, and they donated money, so I'm not gonna bitch about them.
• 46:07
Um, well, I, I'd like to, but I'm not going to. Um, but the bigger problem is, is that the people that responded were the ones that r- I th- I looked at it, just before I came down here, I looked at it again.
• 46:18
It's like the ones that, the people that responded to it are the ones that piss me off. Oh, really? Yeah. I get it. Because, because, because it was like, "Well, if that trail was there, I would go ride it."
• 46:27
I was like- As if they have a- It's like, it's like build me something so I can go fucking do something. You lazy motherfucker. Then go fucking help. Get out there... Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
• 46:34
And it, and it was like, and the reason I'm bitching about that business is because they feed into that. I don't think I've seen that post yet. Did I send it to you? You did not. Oh.
• 46:46
I got screenshots of it while I was driving. Which is probably fine. Which is probably fine, though. You, you have- But like, no... your problem is you have to get by the dildo posts before you get to that.
• 46:53
Oh, s- [laughs] Wow. I feel like that's something you should ca- ca- catch before you move on. [laughs] No, but I, my, my point- I know what you mean, but like- Yeah. I, it, it, it just- I don't...
• 47:06
there was, it, like, more aware though is like their response was, mm, maybe inappropriate, but appropriate for a business that li- literally thrives off of these trails- Right... getting better, easier.
• 47:19
Not even easier, just better. I mean, they're gonna, they're gonna sell stuff to whichever side of the, the river you ride on, right? Yeah.
• 47:26
They're gonna, they're gonna make money off of it either way, so any time you expand that, they're gonna make money off of it. But the response of the riders is what pissed me off. Really? Yeah.
• 47:34
It was, it was like, it was like, "Yeah, we need something easier to go ride." Well, and that's, remember, don't forget, at the DHCP meeting, that's where I got in trouble. Hmm. 'Cause I said, "You have it.
• 47:43
Drive to the top of Van Peenen and ride up there." Yeah. And then somebody opened their mouth and said they get- I actually kind of like the top of Van Peenen. [laughs] Well, no, that's just it. You can ride that.
• 47:52
But this, this one person- My needles go up... this one person jumped on my ass about that they crashed and had $8,000 of medical bills. Oh, right. And I'm like, I'm like- Yeah... you wanna look at my shoulder?
• 48:02
You wanna look- But you know, that, that can happen-... you wanna look at my fucking shins?... any day to anybody- Ex- exactly. That's-... on any trail... if you're gonna go ride a bicycle, that's what's gonna happen.
• 48:09
My, my- Yeah. Fair... my most expensive crash [laughs] Let's not even go there. I feel like that's a whole nother podcast. Really, let's not go there. Okay, fine. I feel like that's a whole nother podcast.
• 48:22
[laughs] I guess the last thing that we should say, we should just say, I know we've been talking about money and donations. People wanna donate.
• 48:27
How do you get the, get more information about the Carlson Park Trail and donate money if you want to? And I will, I will, I will- Yeah... I will send this to Greg first thing in the morning, um, so that he can- Oh...
• 48:38
post it on the, on the thing so we can post it. Um- I gotta talk shit about him, too, because- No, but I feel, I feel like there's-... he was ta- he was talking shit to me this weekend...
• 48:44
there's links at decorah- Was he? Was he there?... decorahia.com. No. There's links at if you go to decorahrotary.com, we have links, too. I mean, I feel like there's links all over the place.
• 48:55
Is, is there a Carlson Park dot com- If people, um-... or something? On Facebook, just look up maybe Carlson Park. Mm. What's it called? No, there- Carlson Park... yeah. Um- I think it's, uh- Carlson Park Project.
• 49:04
But make sure you- Carlson Park Project, yes... yeah, it's, it's gotta be project, and that's on Facebook, and that, there's a link on there that will get you. So you've only got-... donations Five days to donate.
• 49:12
Let's put- Yeah... by the time this gets out, you got five days to donate It's through the 18th- Yeah... your donations get matched. You have- So- Yeah, you have five days to donate a match on...
• 49:19
let's step up to the plate- Yeah, yeah... and, like, match the donations.
• 49:21
And that, and that, and, and you can donate after that, but that's where we get the max amount of money out because there's a, there's a, there's a guy that will- Mm...
• 49:27
there's a, there's a few people that will match them- Several people... yes. Yep.
• 49:30
So we can, we can get more money toward that, and the good thing about that is it gives them more money that doesn't come out of Spitter and I's pocket. [laughs] Oh, wow. This is not our pocket.
• 49:38
[laughs] 'Cause you guys are so donating. Sort of feels like it sometimes. [laughs] No. No. But, yeah. So it, it's Carlson Park Trails- Decorah. Okay. That's, that's the, that's the Facebook page. Yeah. Oh, wow.
• 49:49
So search that on Facebook. Any donation that is made now to the 18th, right? Yep. Yep. 18th? And anything after the 18th- Of March- Yeah... is matched 50/50. Yes. Yes. Or 100%. Oh, 100. 100%. 100%, yeah.
• 50:03
Okay, like, 100%. So, so- I, I feel like that's done. I thought they made that already. No. I thought it was- Yeah. No, no... they didn't max that out yet? I think- nope.
• 50:09
You can, you can poke that bear a little bit and get it up there, too. If we get... If we, if we... If they get... They said $60,000. If we hit $70,000, I got 10 bucks that says those guys will kick right up to it.
• 50:18
I'm pretty sure that the people- Yeah... who have donated that money- Yeah... will, like, step up- I agree... and, like- I agree... like, re-match. Yeah. And that's cool. And that's really cool.
• 50:25
And again, I, I don't like the project because it's not something I care about, but at the same time, I think- I mean, you don't- I think it's not- You don't not like it... I th- nope. Uh, no. I- It's just not...
• 50:32
It's just better- I think you should care about it, though, because it's gonna move people off your trails. I know you brought that up before. I like running people over. [laughs] Just kidding. Wow.
• 50:43
Have you, have you s- You are such a nice person. [laughs] Have you seen me ride a bike? Wow. I couldn't run anybody over. There's a guy walking in front of me, I can't even catch him.
• 50:51
[laughs] And you have problems with, like, like, retaining walls, so I feel like, yeah- Yeah, see-... you would not have an issue... so, so here's the problem. You put up a building.
• 50:59
What do you think is gonna happen when I ride by that building? I'm gonna run right into that goddamn thing. Mm-hmm. There's... And those beams are big. I'm gonna get hurt. [laughs] All right. We're out of here.
• 51:09
That's enough of this silly shit. All right. Let's call it a night. And- Got the music? What do you think? Eh, maybe. It's might working. Maybe it's over? [upbeat music] Oh, there it is. Oh, we got music. Woo-hoo!
• 51:19
That's the starting music. Oh, yeah. Start and end music. Oh, yeah. Well, this w- the new Slacker p- you can't, you can't start and end the... You can't... I can't go to the ending. It's just one time. Oh, okay. Yeah.
• 51:29
Okay. So ending is finishing, starting is beginning. Thank you again for all hanging out here and listening to our bitch about trails. Um, maybe we'll get more consistent on our podcast. We'll see. Probably not.
• 51:40
Talk to y'all later. Thank you. [laughs] Well, that's way fucking better than the last one, kiddos. [laughs]
