- 1:34and the title is The Little Wishbone. And I will warn you there are
- 1:38sound quality issues on this one. But without any further ado, let's just
- 1:44go ahead and listen. You can get it straight. Grimes, the Puckers
- 1:51Rose Moses travel had wind up in a gut at the prison of the grave.
- 1:53It started with left round, a bright morning and a battle over a
- 1:57chicken. He got better as it went along. It could have lasted a
- 2:00lifetime, but it didn't. It's stopped in a gray morning with a little
- 2:04woostbone broken when the plane of Laymand Chandler upstanding offer of crime fiction comes his
- 2:09most famous character and the adventure is off sill a mollow now with Gerald Moore
- 2:23as sorry, still a mollow. We bring these nice exciting story a little
- 2:28wishbone. Sometimes the sun doesn't shine at nine o'cot the morning. Sometimes everything's
- 2:49just gray, the sky, the buildings, a streeting, the face is
- 2:53going by gray in a man's mind. When I talked in front of the
- 2:57flightly landscape second square on Senter Boulevard, got out of my car, I
- 3:00knew this was just that the morning, and that was right as it should
- 3:05be, because what I had to tell her, what had to be said,
- 3:08belonged and grave, the chilling half life that leaves everything and everybody is
- 3:13something less than weird, and a half life that's maybe a moment for fair
- 3:16Bird, maybe a moment after said yes, I'd like to see miss Jones
- 3:25with cordially, Jones, please, I called. My name is Philip Marlow,
- 3:30Yes, mister Marlow, and I'm mister earlier I police told me what
- 3:37happened there under change? Yeah, Nancy enough this of course the colass door
- 3:42down in the right hand time, this way to morning much proper to run.
- 3:52The length of the car, though, was also grave. And that's
- 3:54the food of the morning, and is what I had to tell miss Cardia
- 3:59Jones. But who didn't sit for another morning three weeks ago, the morning
- 4:05that was bright inside now? And it didn't sit with Jones. That's Jones,
- 4:12the stranger in the butcher's shop, the customer with the enchanting green gray
- 4:15eyes, the girl who wanted the same sewing chicken I did. And then
- 4:18no, one doesn't turn nine cents for the law. And that young lady
- 4:25is just what I'm holding, namely one wing, one neck, both like,
- 4:28no, I got here first, you did? But did you,
- 4:31miss John? The tile? Now? Who really needs this? The mooted,
- 4:39who's all talking together? Now? You miss John? I need to
- 4:44fair enough, mister was inside I woke up to about cut you can cutch
- 4:49your sorry? What do you think I was thinking? I was thinking about
- 4:54maybe you woke up thinking about chickens. Got your toy you can't talk to
- 5:00play and chicken And since I cooked for one on the floor ship and the
- 5:03questionable and gallows the same jeh, johnest the goodness of inspiration? Do I
- 5:08also cook for one? It's not even spoken for you? What's good?
- 5:15That's so it's the problem tonight you have dinner together? Oh, it's because
- 5:19we don't even know. It's mother. Why that's your ire? Is the
- 5:29first part? I answered him? Oh there, yeah, now you know
- 5:31each other. Well it's me. That's still be right and I'm sending right
- 5:49And mister mallow, yes, yes, you can put the chicken down now
- 5:54you're the only ones in the shop. That's the way it started, and
- 6:04it has gone along and about the same sets from the chicken cut her story,
- 6:08which is the best I ever eaten, but only because I could look
- 6:10at the lovely chef. What I hated. That's the wonderful Gabby evening that
- 6:14I didn't want to see ending for the end of year. The lunch the
- 6:16next day. In the day after, don't do the punt all my profession
- 6:21and autists Around the edges, she painted deer can a life for an ad
- 6:25agency downtown. So her flights on Chery Moyer was half studio, half of
- 6:30pop and and oil covies. You know, the kind of cozy that makes
- 6:32you want to hear left the second you're walking, always makes you hate to
- 6:36leave. But leave you did because Jones would like to go play to me
- 6:40and Jones wo like to do things. I like to play many at your
- 6:43golf and badminton and god bowling every Wednesday night. The lady, all right,
- 6:53let's say you waste away by God, now by your rude no telling?
- 7:05Am I great enough? Quit great bread, real great? And now
- 7:23ladies and gentlemen, they don't stop with the observatory pop up. And tonight
- 7:27was Jose double crossing? I'm talking about you. You call my office too
- 7:35there tonight you say let's just look at the moon. You better expected mohalland
- 7:44drive, yeah, park and all. We should still get out of here.
- 7:51Have you finished your little check cry? I jes rest smile that classy
- 8:00Thomas. Okay, we'll stay with nothing breaking you up? Junior. Yeah,
- 8:11he n loves my frim or was that? Excuse him? But I
- 8:15don't think I had to listen to a charming guy. Anymore cutting, but
- 8:26he was leaving, but young love always broke him up wire. I guess
- 8:31I started with somebody else. Listen all the morning over land drive in her
- 8:52own most inimitable child. Jonesy was trade. But that's who I went right
- 8:58along with it, because no three weeks I passed up a half a dozen
- 9:01jobs for every one I could that. It sucked my chin out very far
- 9:05when I did go to work, and all in all, side might best
- 9:07not to behave like the high school sophomore suddenly realized that spring to me something
- 9:13more important than baseball. We were at her place one night. The evening
- 9:16plans have called for me to sit as a model from the risk down excrucively.
- 9:20All I have to do is hold the Boatlo County water in the poring
- 9:24position. Was it's fifty. I just couldn't get with them, and I'm
- 9:28not going to get any set of here how much longer. Jonesy don't talk
- 9:33about its small some we loves. Yes, I come over here. Job.
- 9:45That's a hot cakes break and an egg coffee and lots of cigarettes.
- 9:48Weekend nervous huh yeah, we'll come to think of it. Our grapefruit broiled
- 9:54we're starting with that, then the eggs basted, and then helpless? What
- 10:00next have? Yeah, well I thought that Gode, we'll get in my
- 10:05car and take a ride. They Laguna beach, not Una? You what?
- 10:13What is it? Nothing? I don't like to say. It's an
- 10:20artist in the mood and it's where I couldn't make a go of it once
- 10:26and I go back. I ready to go some place joke anything? Oh
- 10:30sure, Yeah, I thought it was something more serious, Josie, I
- 10:33mean not that your work doesn't sound of them. I go back to the
- 10:39bottle bar. Uh huh, you don't move any know now? Yeah me
- 10:50next time that we boys take over, we'll put it over here. And
- 10:54I yeah, oh no, damn, you know, thank you glad it
- 11:01wasn't your watch's broken? Hey, maybe a kind of kid mentor station.
- 11:07But my kid brother, I think they were going to be a great skating
- 11:09team when they grew up. Really and there's a fly clothing, Oh well,
- 11:13wish it? They back to college a girl? Hey, hey,
- 11:18kid, tell a hots and fined about that? Okay that college in many
- 11:20your business did? And this thing here where the police is broken off never
- 11:26chain? What was that? Well? I wish you know when I lost
- 11:31him, you put the book set on the this pleasing you know that I
- 11:37got a finished ships soon in the morning to night, I got to close
- 11:41the moon. I'm getting balloon. I look for you to morrow morning with
- 11:46him all right, good night, tells me all the way home. I
- 12:03founded some place between potting poor mollow it darely goes for keep secret son and
- 12:09playing male pride. Goodbye, Jonesy, you live your life and I live
- 12:13mine. That By the next morning, I told myself on a twitch something
- 12:18is just worth my business. I wasn't a private protecting where Jonesy would the
- 12:22son. It would all work itself out. Life would go on. And
- 12:28if he breakfast is wonderful, royal grapeful inclusions, and the ride what turned
- 12:33out to be sent a barber of perfect So in the days that follow no
- 12:37more we said about it. Nothing unusual happen until the following Friday nights.
- 12:41That was nice befall last we were in the square, then the local daughters
- 12:46of something on the lot. The exercise would do me good, she said,
- 12:50And I was learning in a hurry, right thought. Last the guide
- 13:13no strokes, and we'd put me to a land right and left, which
- 13:16abruptly brought her up against the tall, fat man with a circle of swooting
- 13:20face without the cool black button cries, almost no nose and thin's hair lift.
- 13:24He would twist it as far away from a smile as following it without
- 13:28saying a word to me. She ran from the small cut and checking the
- 13:31I shot it after her, until suddenly I remember the face that it just
- 13:33frightened the man who had laughed at young love. That might be a slippatory,
- 13:39a man shoonsy has thought she'd know. I turned back some time to
- 13:43see and walked off the other side of the sands floor, calmly leaves the
- 13:46building by a side entrance. It is all looks cute. I need it.
- 13:56Hey, hey, you old and I want to talk to you.
- 14:01Yeah, who are you fighting? What's my father? With a routine which
- 14:03played to be observatory, Yes, I remember you now? Good? What
- 14:09else you remember? Come on the girl in now. I want to answers
- 14:11that they mean a lot to me. Yes, so I say tell you
- 14:15I saw before, and I thought I saw all right, that's just what
- 14:16I planned to do. And you can tell her that for me. Also
- 14:20a reminder that I was on the corner of third and Oak two on armist
- 14:24to say thirty Oak, I'm a douna beach the beach. Yes, no,
- 14:30if you don't mind doing this one old wish, that charm, A
- 14:35charm that can't miss for me, because both ends are in my hands.
- 14:39See when I put it uppart as I make my wish, I can't rum
- 14:45yea, Now the plice is met the big dog and tell him to the
- 14:48lady and tell her that I'll be ahard from again. Good night, good
- 14:52night. Yeah, hear from me again too. Oh wait a minute,
- 15:13a customer call your head? Yes you yeah. The first minute there was
- 15:18a girl got your height, dark hair, pretty green eyes, the green
- 15:24breast. Are you hit them? That's right? Leave a message. Okay,
- 15:30she's just going, but knock home. Just go on just going going
- 15:37for good? Want ahead and call me there my head and coat joke,
- 15:52no other words than that she wasn't. I spent what was left of the
- 15:58night looking for checking from one to another, but it was not the next
- 16:02morning. Early when I tried once more at a studio apotum, all I
- 16:06found out was seen. I decided there was one place left to look the
- 16:11street Connor and Laguna, wherever a month ago something had happened that wouldn't lie
- 16:15too got in my current, hit it out, and all the way down
- 16:18to one specific church looked cool, and the dreary desolation that hits all beach
- 16:25were droughts out of seasons. Settled on Laguna like a stick hangover. I
- 16:30finally found the intersection, a third notes with two sleepy drug stores and dying
- 16:34bar and a pottery stand clothed for the winning nothing else the only kind of
- 16:40life was a black footed old man on a bench, whippling delictously to piece
- 16:44of no gray, but with a much be cane the perfections. Looks as
- 16:48though he's been there for twenty years. I decided to give him a try.
- 16:52What's that to say? You know? I said, things are pretty
- 16:55dull around here. I didn't know didn't be somewhere something happening. People come,
- 17:00people go, and you don't got things on their minds. You got
- 17:06to come and go more often tout They could take corner and I don't know
- 17:11about that much. Seems like this corner gets a good share of life.
- 17:15I'll bet you nothing's happened in this corner in the last six months. We're
- 17:18talking about it wrong. It's run the gamma. Last August a baby was
- 17:25born over in front of the drug store there in attack. It is right,
- 17:29dere right. It was Oldsy Loveley, the druggist delivered and find job
- 17:33who palm boys. And on the other end of right, yes, two
- 17:40fella named Peters who was a kind of belated world casualty. You mistake,
- 17:45do you mean? Well? He went through the First World War without a
- 17:48fast and then he got himself killed by a kick and run driver right over
- 17:52there in front of the tavern. And it happened just a month ago.
- 17:56Ann Yeah, two o'clock in the morning, l sir, so this really
- 18:03I haven't caught up with the driver there was murder, sir. You're white
- 18:10as if she sounds like I didn't hit below the belt. I don't remember
- 18:15what I told the old man. All I could think it was junky anonymous
- 18:18to say I hit him, run back and that's climbing make at breaking a
- 18:22wishbone charm between fat fingers. My next step of mechanically, I started checking
- 18:27rooming house, the treating sicker to artis and a chirt one paid off well.
- 18:32Then I expected, yes, I didn't need the t and she did
- 18:38have a room here. Misappointed she did not. What point is about,
- 18:44Well, I am a friend of hers, a good friend. I'm trying
- 18:47to locate it. I see well Courting left quite suddenly in the middle of
- 18:52the nineteen tomorrows a half finished hand. But behind the beautiful thing. Yeah,
- 18:57sometimes I can't said they flow even in the middle of the night.
- 19:02N I see myself when I was younger. Heaven No heans the bottom is
- 19:08anything wrong about you? Because the morning after she left it was just honest.
- 19:15This day I think a man James You're asked him about asex man you
- 19:21know no, And from what I've read his sa I still look missus Winkel.
- 19:26I got to find out all I can about the guy right away.
- 19:30He means trouble for Johny you think she or what I mean is, as
- 19:38it turned out, the kill her used the telephone holiday here it means or
- 19:45of something we break get it all. And he made a residation at the
- 19:53BigMan Pleasure Hotel in Hollywood, BigMan Plus. Okay, now look they tell
- 19:57him anything about Jones, reading like, oh goodness, you know I could
- 20:02she send on Lincoln I've been told him toppy head for breast. That's all
- 20:10I know. Thanks miss Wink, Thanks love, good luck, mister good
- 20:22luck, she said, Oh the good luck Marlow and a firline Junesy head
- 20:29come and was burned out on a sweet corner at four o'clock in the morning
- 20:32a month ago. I can always talk to him all the way back to
- 20:40la. I worried because so that I had to find this. I was
- 20:45halfway down the hall to my apopo when I heard it my phone. I
- 20:48ran to the door and practically ripped it off the hinches before I stopped ringing.
- 20:53Hello Jonesy, Jonesy, where are you now? Look, you're not
- 21:00going any place. You're gonna fit tight right where you're I get there.
- 21:04I'm in a bad jam about it. Well, it's it's not too late,
- 21:10baby, I just got back from Wegoner. Honey, I know all
- 21:11about it. Look, you're in love with a good private eye. You
- 21:15remember, run Baby, That's not the answer, never was shot Jones.
- 21:21Please, will you shut up and listen to me? For a minute,
- 21:22I thought it all over. I'm gonna get out of this my own way.
- 21:27We've got to talk. Come on, where are you you think it
- 21:36comes from me? Thanks? Run, don't try it. I know that,
- 21:48Joy. We will make it a hard way. Least I couldn't stop
- 22:02Jones with running, I figured I could at least stop the guy who was
- 22:04chasing it. So I called the BigMan's Pagan and found out that all In
- 22:08Begley was still registered. I got my car started for the hotel, but
- 22:11then he had another idea. It was a good chance, but a sleazy
- 22:17blackmailing crumb like Beggie carried a record of his own anyway, was worth a
- 22:22try, and to pay off better out than a feeding. So I went
- 22:25to police headquarters instead, where Detective Lieutenant Matthews was his old sympathetic self,
- 22:30as usually go. You got some citizen all fake out, and now you
- 22:33want to find out a FISA crook. Now, well, what is this
- 22:36something new in crime detection? I love Matthews. I'll come down some quiet
- 22:40Tuesday. It will make all the jokes all afternoon. But right now a
- 22:42minute, if you're going to dip into police files, I would like to
- 22:45know a little bit more about no joke. All right, the guy goes
- 22:48the name of all In Bekeley, fat six one forty, so the anything's
- 22:52my badget or a bum check on it. Right now, he's shooting an
- 22:55angle and it includes me, or I find him in the files and I
- 22:57want him exclusive on him. But ten minutes then he's all your Oh and
- 23:00what's the hook? Why are you included? Because of a bruemette named Joan
- 23:07Oh Joe yes, Jones. I like to make it Marlow some day cool.
- 23:15Matthew's the Simon serious. Okay, you'll find about three thousand fat guys
- 23:22in there, you know. Two thousand of them was Doc. Yeah,
- 23:25go ahead of Scot. I'll send him one of the clubs to give your
- 23:26hands if you get us close. Well, the clubs tough and hard work
- 23:32were now the field down to a three hundred calls. He started food,
- 23:36street lights, na Old Finally tommya forty pounds later in supporting him Astache but
- 23:41there was no doubt about it. James Ollen, Dlias, jim Olo,
- 23:45Elias, Allan big Low is now all in bakery with charges and ran from
- 23:48Hetty Stebree and Louis the end of the one that even got Matthews on the
- 23:52balls. Bakeley was wanted from murderer in Rhode Island, what are we waiting
- 23:56for Paul model. Let's go get him with siland of the squad con hit
- 24:00it up, suttle about it and end it feels good again for the first
- 24:03time. Don't get run away at the square when we turned up with the
- 24:07mats, Just cut the sirlan and who blocks about the boulevard? Who stopped
- 24:11around the torn up the Bachman's project to the two stories flamed hotel held together
- 24:15by complish coats of cheeks made only an inside the line of empty sweet air
- 24:18bottles said it took nothing more than ordinary's ventilation to keep the musty snow from
- 24:23getting thicken up his shoes, jittery nights. Buckstakely had room too twelve and
- 24:30left his mouth hanging open while Matt's turn him outside. You mentioned ten minutes
- 24:34along with him, still want to yeah, importantly, Okay, somebody who's
- 24:41got to go up and get him right as well? Be you look,
- 24:44the boys will cover his window from outside and both ends of the hall from
- 24:47the lending it gets tight. Just whistled and duck go ahead, went upstairs
- 24:57the second floor when the only life was a I filled with the power into
- 25:00the whole modifier right a head way out, so I took it backing out
- 25:04of the door. That's figure was having trouble with a life. Fast called
- 25:10me before you realized I was bad. That's all them Rightly, make saw
- 25:15me not to begin slowly backing up? Do you want? What are you
- 25:18doing? Where is she bag? I gain anyway? I got through it.
- 25:26I think my mind. Show you the comet murdering? Get up good,
- 25:34I can find out at least file bulletin from Rhode Island. Yeah,
- 25:41yeah, that's right. I had had daughters. The only reason I was
- 25:45trying to shift the kit down. They would listening. There. We got
- 25:48my rone, and that's make a deal. I'll keep me up shut not
- 25:52one word about that. Didn't run you let me ask bad chance? You
- 25:55just find me how I played. I've killed him more than one you most
- 25:57stop nice going mallow, You got him light on his face where he belongs?
- 26:11Hey, where you're going? Mine? Chonsey Matthews, I got a
- 26:15cockcroer. Yeah yeah, that my little brunette. Well let's go. It
- 26:23looks like you can do. You're talking right here, and now come on
- 26:26boy. I went along with Matthews. All right. It didn't work out
- 26:38like expected because what I had to stay to Chelsey then just couldn't be sick,
- 26:44not my chief hotel with a bunch of totops standing around. It had
- 26:48to wait. Wait for the hours of a long night with pas that I
- 26:52spent timing a side walks through miles of that street while I try to get
- 26:56full of myself. I than twelve hours ag was men. Now I didn't
- 27:04look at her again. Yeah and now as I followed missed earlier down the
- 27:08great top of the called the wood door, I forgured I could tell jonesy
- 27:12all. I wanted to say, she's here tomorrow, be here than I
- 27:26guess she didn't understand me. The two people were in love. They share
- 27:33didn't been changed. See I found out figure it was a killing. I
- 27:40think you'd already done to his hotel, Virginny. Crazy kid shouldn't trusted me.
- 27:48John's quite extreme because matter how added up we had company with waiting for
- 28:00Yeah, as you say, thanks for the budgy, right baby, it
- 28:07was great. There's your little chair wishbone. Sorry it's broken, goodbye Johnson,
- 28:27m M. Is there anything else I can do to help? Mister
- 28:36Molow? Oh? Yeah, thanks and good day m H. Ill pressed
- 28:55mortuary. Mister Earlier is speaking. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe bringing you Raymond
- 29:15Chandler's most famous character, star Gerald Moore and are produced and directed by Norman
- 29:21McDonald. Script is by Robert Mitchell and Gene Levitt. Featured in the cast
- 29:25were Gene Bates, Bill Johnstone, Jane Morgan, John Dayner, Edgar Barrier
- 29:29and Anne Morrison. The square dance was called by Paul Pierce. Detective Lieutenant
- 29:33Matthews is played by Larry Dupkins. The special music is composed and conducted by
- 29:38Richard o'ross. Be shortly what us again next week when Philip Marlow says,
- 29:48this time a tobacco chewing engineer, a redhead running a pulldose, or an
- 29:52eleprechau on his track line all added up to death at an unfinished special,
- 29:57And there could have been more, But then I found out which one had
- 30:00actually submitted the lowest bitch. The Adventures of Philip Marlow drying Gerald Moore comes
- 30:17to you every Saturday evening at the same time friends crib welcome back. Well.
- 30:26We received a comment about murder of the weak plots, and this certainly
- 30:33went a different direction, and for an old time radio play was something very
- 30:37different, certainly for Philip marlow really one of the most original plot ideas,
- 30:45because really every episode since Red Wind practically began with Philip marlow being hired and
- 30:55trouble following this one starts in his personal life and with a very different sort
- 31:02of Marlowe and desire, and it's just a fascinating different turn on the character,
- 31:11certainly miles away from even the Philip Marlowe as written by Raymond Chandler at
- 31:18a time. The big pity about this one is that the audio has got
- 31:22issues on it. It seems that with all of the really good audio we've
- 31:30enjoyed throughout the series, this one turns out to be one of those few
- 31:34with a few issues, which hurts the listening a little bit, but not
- 31:40too much. It's just a wonderful story, and I thought the end was
- 31:45just heartbreakingly sad, but very well done well. Now we do have a
- 31:52little bit of a word about technical support and when issues arise with the sign.
- 32:00What I really want to ensure is that if people are having problems,
- 32:07that they get in touch with the folks who will be able to help them
- 32:09the quickest. If you're noticing sound quality problems or an episode doesn't show up,
- 32:17I definitely want to hear from you so that I can get that corrected,
- 32:22because that's something we can address on our side. However, I've received
- 32:27a number of emails regarding the app and how to use features associated with it.
- 32:34Now, because I'm not a regular user of the app, I'm not
- 32:37particularly trained on all the technical aspects of it, I'm probably not the best
- 32:44to ask regarding app functionality. Now I do receive these emails, I'll poke
- 32:49around with the app, see if I can figure something out, and hope
- 32:52I can come up with a good solution, because if at all possible,
- 32:57I want to avoid having tell you to contact someone else after you've already waited
- 33:02to hear back from me, though sometimes I do have to because the question
- 33:07is beyond my knowledge or just my ability to figure out. So if you
- 33:12do have a question regarding the app, and it's not regarding sound quality or
- 33:17an episode not showing up in the feed, then click the contact button and
- 33:23choose troubleshooting. If it is regarding sound quality, an episode not playing,
- 33:29or not seeing an episode that should be there, and email man. I'll
- 33:34be happy to take a look and see what's going on, and I'll continue
- 33:37to do my best for those who do email me regarding app issues. But
- 33:42I just want to be sure that people know how to get the best help
- 33:45the first time. And it's not like I'm spending all day answering these but
- 33:51again, people will have the best experience by getting in contact with the right
- 33:55people the first time. All right, Well, now we do turn to
- 34:00some listener conments and feedback. LORI comments regarding episode fifteen fifty nine Birds on
- 34:07the Wing. I like this one quite a bit. I did notice it
- 34:12was similar to an earlier episode, but I figure in the original run they
- 34:19were probably pretty far apart. I was not a fan of Philip marlow but
- 34:22he has really grown on me. I hope there are a lot more episodes
- 34:27to go. Well, thanks so much, Laurie, and we do have
- 34:31close to nine or ten months worth of episodes left of the series, and
- 34:38it really is high quality, and I do thank you. If you're not
- 34:42necessarily a fan of Philip Marlowe in literature, and there are certain reasons for
- 34:49that. The radio Marlowe is different and in my opinion, probably a little
- 34:53bit better, at least as a person anyway. All right, Well,
- 34:59that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Nick Carter,
- 35:02and join us again next Wednesday for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow.
- 35:07Oh and next Tuesday, Police Headquarters returns. In the meanwhile, send
