- 3:18the ways that you designed them to.
- 3:23Lord, I pray you'll open up our vessels.
- 3:26God, open up our capillaries. Lord, open up all of our senses
- 3:35unto the reality, God of the purity, Lord, that you have
- 3:41called us into. Lord, let us walk in this world
- 3:47as if we have already started the journey there with you in
- 3:51glory. God, I pray that you will help
- 3:55us. Lord, help us to transcend time
- 3:59and space. God, help us to see you and be
- 4:02seated there with you. And Lord, I just pray that you
- 4:06will fuel us for the journey, Lord, as you heal our broken
- 4:12bodies. Father, I pray that you will
- 4:15take us to whatever end here on this earth that you desire,
- 4:22Lord, whatever that looks like, whatever it is, Father, that you
- 4:27desire is what we want. We want your will to be done.
- 4:31Lord, we pray against fear. We pray against dismay, Lord.
- 4:37We pray against a fence, Lord, and I pray in the name of Jesus,
- 4:41God, that you will give us the peace that only comes from you,
- 4:47Lord, through whatever trials and tribulations that you have
- 4:51called us into. Lord, that's all that we desire
- 4:55are the things that you have called us into.
- 4:58Lord, let us walk in that bridal identity today.
- 5:01God, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray all of these
- 5:06things. Amen.
- 5:09Let's start in verse one. The first day of the week came
- 5:17Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark unto the tomb, and
- 5:22she saw the stone taken away from the tomb.
- 5:26So here she is coming to spread some more ointment on the dead
- 5:32Jesus. We know that he was taken down
- 5:37off the cross by Joseph of Arimathea.
- 5:42We know that Nicodemus brought 100 lbs of spices there.
- 5:48And here Mary is coming to complete that task.
- 5:51And she came right after all the legal requirements of the
- 5:56Sabbath and the Passover had passed, so she's coming as soon
- 6:02as she could. Verse 2 Then she ran and came to
- 6:08Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and
- 6:13said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb,
- 6:17and we know not where they have laid him.
- 6:19So she was looking for a dead Jesus.
- 6:22She wasn't looking for a resurrected Jesus.
- 6:26She went and told these two fellers here, and John remains
- 6:32anonymous because he has humility, although we're going
- 6:37to see that he did not want to be named, but he knows that he's
- 6:42loved by the Lord Jesus Christ and he knows that he is much
- 6:46more of a runner than Peter is. 3 Peter therefore went forth,
- 6:52and that other disciple, and came to the tomb. 4 So they ran
- 6:58both together, and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and
- 7:03came first to the tomb. We see here that John is much
- 7:10more of a runner than Peter was. 5 And he stooping down and
- 7:18looking in, saw the linen clothes lying, yet went not in.
- 7:23So we see here that John paused at the opening to the tomb.
- 7:28He was perplexed by the whole scene. 6 Then came Simon Peter
- 7:34following him, and went into the tomb, and saw the linen clothes
- 7:39lying, 7 and the napkin that was about his head, not lying with
- 7:43the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
- 7:48So Peter did not hesitate. He was very impulsive and you
- 7:56see that all throughout Scripture that Jesus just did
- 8:00and said whatever he was thinking and feeling in the
- 8:03moment. So John stopped and paused to
- 8:07reflect on the whole scene. Peter ran straight in.
- 8:12They're telling us that this outline of a body that was
- 8:18wrapped in wrapped in these clothes that was spread with the
- 8:22ointment was lying there and the headpiece was lying separately.
- 8:29And there is a lot of theologians that would tell you
- 8:33that these dressings were folded neatly off to a corner,
- 8:39signaling his return, as if someone who got done eating
- 8:45would they would do the same. They would fold their napkin in
- 8:49a way that signaled that they were not done, that they were
- 8:52coming back to the table. There's a lot of theologians
- 8:56that would tell you that. There's also a thought process
- 9:02here that it looked as if the body had evaporated out of this
- 9:08mummy like cocoon of all these dressings that were spread over
- 9:15with the ointment there and it still had the outline of the
- 9:18body, but the body was gone and it was not taken off by any
- 9:22human form. There was no stealing of the
- 9:26body. There was no cutting it out.
- 9:28There was nothing of the sort. It was miraculous.
- 9:34Jesus could go through walls. He could appear wherever he
- 9:39wanted to in his resurrected state.
- 9:42And here we know after he was resurrected on the third day, we
- 9:47know that he appeared to many and he left his grave clothes
- 9:51lying there in the tomb. And there's a lot of people who
- 9:59have studied these grave clothes as one has been.
- 10:08The Shroud of Turin has been handed down through generations,
- 10:13and that particular artifact could or could not be the actual
- 10:26burial cloth for Jesus. We know that it is a true relic.
- 10:33It is not something that is been propagated and fabricated.
- 10:40We know that it is a factual relic from that time, made of
- 10:45linen, which stands the test of time.
- 10:48However, it would be like God. Whenever Moses died, they did
- 10:56not know where the body was laid.
- 10:58It would be just like God to make sure that these clothes did
- 11:05not stand the test of time so that we would not worship them.
- 11:09So we need to be careful whenever anything comes in front
- 11:15of us that is extra biblical. Just mark my words and listen up
- 11:22carefully. Anytime anything that comes
- 11:26across that is extra biblical, we need to make sure that we are
- 11:32very on guard. We cannot just believe every
- 11:36little thing that comes our way or we're going to be swept away
- 11:41in hype and fanfare. We need to make sure that we are
- 11:48rooted and grounded in the Word of God.
- 11:51This is the only reliable thing in the entire world.
- 11:58It is not the Bible plus anything else.
- 12:01It is the Bible and it is only the Bible that is profitable and
- 12:06useful and salvation, friends, and all of the rest of it is
- 12:12just opinion, speculation. And we can think about those
- 12:23things and we can wonder about those things, but we cannot put
- 12:29our whole trust and whole self. It is not hills that are worth
- 12:33dying on, friends, and we need to keep that in mind as we go
- 12:38through this life. The only thing that we need to
- 12:43make sure that we are willing to die on the hill for is the
- 12:51Bible. It is Genesis to Revelation.
- 12:56That's it, friends. All the rest of it is just
- 13:01speculation. And they are novelties.
- 13:05And we can sit and talk about it and wonder about it, but it's
- 13:10not worth us losing ground with other believers over.
- 13:18It's not worth us dividing over. 8 Then went in also that other
- 13:32disciple which came first to the tomb, and he saw him believe.
- 13:38So here we see that John, before he ever saw the risen Lord Jesus
- 13:43Christ in his resurrected body, he already put his belief in the
- 13:48fact that he was alive. We worship a risen God.
- 13:54There is no tomb, there is no grade that you can go and visit
- 13:58for the Lord Jesus Christ. Like all the other prophets of
- 14:02old, like all the other wise teachers of old, like all of the
- 14:07other religious leaders of old. There are places that you can go
- 14:11and worship, but there is not one for the Lord Jesus Christ
- 14:14because He is alive and John is quick to believe on him.
- 14:21I pray that you believe on the Lord.
- 14:24I pray that you have put your full trust and full faith in the
- 14:29Lord Jesus Christ, in the risen Lord.
- 14:32He is alive. 9/4 As yet they knew not the Scripture that he
- 14:41must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away
- 14:45again unto their own home. So look at here.
- 14:48They were not yet indwelled with the Holy Spirit.
- 14:53They had not yet got all of the understanding of the full
- 14:58Scriptures, the full counsel. But the Holy Spirit is about to
- 15:01reveal all of the words that Jesus Christ spoke to them and
- 15:06how they all are congruent and all go together in Scripture.
- 15:11Interpret Scripture, friends, and it is a beautiful
- 15:14masterpiece only brought about by God the Holy Spirit, the Lord
- 15:25Jesus Christ. These are the only ways, They
- 15:28are the only ways that we could have this infallible and errant
- 15:35scripture. This is a miraculous book.
- 15:44This is a miraculous piece of literature.
- 15:47This is a miraculous group of writings that was written by
- 15:55many authors that spanned different time periods and
- 16:00distances and lands, all put together and all congruent and
- 16:05all beautiful. All a masterpiece.
- 16:07The tapestry and it all supports each other, and it is a
- 16:11miraculous work of God. 11 But Mary stood outside of the tomb
- 16:19weeping, and as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the
- 16:23tomb. So just imagine the scene.
- 16:26She comes early in the morning. She sees the stone is rolled
- 16:30away. We know that there's other women
- 16:32with her at the time. And you see, as soon as she sees
- 16:38this, the the stone rolled away, she goes and tells John and
- 16:43Peter. John and Peter go immediately
- 16:45in. They see the whole scene.
- 16:48They return back to the upper room.
- 16:52They go back to their own homes, as the Bible tells us.
- 16:56And then the women are left outside of the tomb.
- 16:59Mary is weeping there. She looked into the tomb, 12 and
- 17:06she saw 2 angels in white sitting, the one at the head and
- 17:09the other at the feet where the body of Jesus had lain.
- 17:13This is like the cherubim over the most holies, the holiest of
- 17:17holy. And you see these two angels
- 17:21sitting there, and what are they going to tell her?
- 17:2713 And they say unto her, Woman, why do you weep?
- 17:30And she said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord,
- 17:34and I know not where they've laid them.
- 17:36So she was looking for a dead body.
- 17:39She wanted to go and finish the work of anointing him and
- 17:44spreading the aloe on him, the ointment on him, and finishing
- 17:51the burial practice of the Jews, which is very scrupulous.
- 17:55Even the Romans of the day they marvelled and they were
- 18:02enamoured by all of the burial practices of the Jews of the
- 18:06time. It's very scrupulous.
- 18:09And here Mary is weeping and she's looking for a dead man,
- 18:14but she will not find him there. And that's what the angels are
- 18:18about to tell her. 14 And when she had thus said, she turned
- 18:30herself back and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it
- 18:35was Jesus. Very interesting.
- 18:38We know from the road to Emmaus, the disciples on the road to
- 18:42Emmaus where Jesus and his resurrected state was hidden
- 18:46from them. We know that the disciples in
- 18:48the next chapter, they are fishing and they're going to
- 18:51look upon him and not realize it was him just yet.
- 18:55And then here Mary is weeping, tears in her eyes and she turns
- 19:00and doesn't realize it's Jesus Christ.
- 19:03You know, there's a lot of speculation when it comes to why
- 19:09in Jesus's resurrected state, the disciples, those who were
- 19:14close to him and walked with them for three years, plus why
- 19:21he was hidden from them in his resurrected body.
- 19:23We know that Jesus had the ability to walk through walls
- 19:28and appear amongst them in a locked door.
- 19:33You can see that in this perfected state, Jesus still
- 19:39bears the scars, the holes in his hand, and the holes in his
- 19:43side. And this is a mystery unto us
- 19:50here on this side of glory. Whenever we get there, we're
- 19:54going to have our perfected bodies, our resurrected bodies,
- 20:00and we know that Jesus was the 1st.
- 20:04And we have received the Holy Spirit as a down payment of that
- 20:09promise and of that truth. And we can only surmise of the
- 20:15reasons why Jesus was hidden from the disciples until he had
- 20:20spoke a word or broke the bread and looked up.
- 20:24And we will find out as we see him, as we look upon him, and
- 20:32it'll be glorious Friends. 15 Jesus said unto her, Woman, why
- 20:41do you weep? Who do you seek?
- 20:44She's supposing him to be. The gardener said unto him, Sir,
- 20:49if you have borne him hence, tell me where you have laid him,
- 20:55and I will take him away. So she's saying here, just show
- 20:59me where you've taken his body, and I will remove him from here.
- 21:06And she had not realized that it was Jesus speaking to her.
- 21:09She's thinking it's just the gardener.
- 21:11And isn't it interesting that the first Adam was told to till
- 21:15the land? And here Mary is mistaking Jesus
- 21:20for a gardener. There's a lot of tapestry here,
- 21:24Friends. 16 Jesus said unto her, Mary.
- 21:31She turned herself, and said unto him, Rabbani, which is to
- 21:35say, Master. So here he spoke a word, and she
- 21:40realized that it was him. 17 Jesus said unto her, Touch me
- 21:46not, for I am not yet ascended to my Father, but go to my
- 21:51brothers and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your
- 21:56Father, and unto my God and your God.
- 22:00So he is saying here to Mary, do not hold fast to me, do not hold
- 22:05on to me, do not try and grab me, and keep me with you.
- 22:11Our relationship has changed. I am no longer walking as your
- 22:18teacher. I'm no longer walking this earth
- 22:21as the one who has yet to go to the cross and be resurrected.
- 22:28I am in my resurrected state and I must ascend to the right hand
- 22:33of the Father. He's telling her that things
- 22:36have changed and he's saying do not try to hold me back from
- 22:43doing the Lord's work. I must go unto the Father.
- 22:46I must send the comforter to you. 18 Mary Magdalene came and
- 22:51told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had
- 22:55spoken these things unto her. Look at how the Lord reveals
- 22:59Himself to the woman that He cast 7 devils out of.
- 23:03Look at how her past did not discredit, it did not disqualify
- 23:09her from receiving the very first public interaction with
- 23:20the risen Lord Jesus Christ. And how blessed and honored is
- 23:25Mary of Magdon? 19 Then the same day, at evening
- 23:31being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut, where
- 23:35the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and
- 23:41stood in the midst, and said unto them, Peace be unto you.
- 23:47So imagine that Jesus just walks in the room, friends, and he
- 23:50does the same today. And we need to let this sphere
- 23:54of man go. And you can see the disciples,
- 23:57they were shaking in their boots because they thought that what
- 24:00had happened to the Lord was going to happen to them.
- 24:07And they had not yet been emboldened by the Holy Spirit to
- 24:13go out and to bring the whole word to the whole world.
- 24:17They were not yet emboldened in their faith, ready to go unto
- 24:21the cross. They were not yet empowered from
- 24:26on high. They had a lot of intellectual
- 24:29knowledge, but they had not yet been sharpened.
- 24:35They had not yet been able to understand what the purpose of
- 24:40it all was. And we can be the same.
- 24:43We can have a lot of head knowledge, but unless that head
- 24:46knowledge is actually put into practice and our faith is grown
- 24:52and we realize the whole purpose of the whole matter of the whole
- 24:55thing is that Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone of all of
- 25:02creation, of everything seen and unseen.
- 25:06We're going to live this life, friends, for ourselves, and
- 25:10we're going to shrink back in fear, just like these Jews.
- 25:15We're doing it this time. But we know that these men went
- 25:18on to testify and to be a witness for him and to suffer
- 25:25many miserable deaths. But they did it all, and they
- 25:31counted it as joy. 20 And when he had so said, he showed unto
- 25:43them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad
- 25:47when they saw the Lord. So he's saying to them, Put your
- 25:52hand, put your fingers in my hand, in my side, look upon my
- 25:57hands, look upon my side. It is I.
- 26:01What a amazing thought, Jesus standing in their midst, bearing
- 26:07the scars from his crucifixion. 21 Then said Jesus to them
- 26:16again, peace be unto you as my Father has sent me, Even so I
- 26:20send you. So we can see here that Jesus is
- 26:24commissioning them to go into the whole world to go and take
- 26:30the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ and what he did for us,
- 26:33His perfect sinless life, his dying of criminals death to
- 26:39atone for us so we can be at one with the Father, so we can be
- 26:44justified. And it's just if I'd never done
- 26:49it, because of the what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us on the
- 26:52cross, And we can receive the Holy Spirit, and we can walk in
- 26:59the Spirit, and we can know that we know that we know that we
- 27:03know that we are going to make it there because of the blood of
- 27:08the Lamb covering us. 22 And when he had said this, he
- 27:17breathed on them, and said unto them, Receive you, the Holy
- 27:22Ghost. 23 Whose ever sins you forgive, they are forgiven unto
- 27:29them. And whoever's, and whosoever
- 27:33sins you retain, they are retained.
- 27:36So here we know that Jesus is giving the disciples the
- 27:44Commission to go and to take the good news unto the whole world.
- 27:50And it is through people choosing to believe or to not
- 27:57believe that will determine where they spend eternity.
- 28:05And He is giving them this Commission right here and right
- 28:08now. He's telling them to be
- 28:11empowered from on high with the Holy Ghost.
- 28:16And He's telling them to go and spread the good news of what He
- 28:20has done. And that will determine whose
- 28:25sins will be forgiven and whose sins will not be forgiven.
- 28:29And it is all about the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 28:33That is, the only way that our sins can be forgiven is through
- 28:39Jesus. And he's telling them that they
- 28:43have the authority to go and to proclaim the good news.
- 28:50And he gives that to you and he gives that to me.
- 28:53And that is the great commandment, friends, to go into
- 28:58all the world, to Judea and Samaria, Jerusalem, to go and to
- 29:05spread the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ to all tribes, all
- 29:11people groups, all languages, all tongues.
- 29:15And we need to know that He is the only way to the Father, and
- 29:21He is the only way that their sins will be forgiven. 24 But
- 29:28Thomas, one of the 12 called Didymus, was not with them when
- 29:32Jesus came. So who knows where Thomas is at
- 29:36this time? Perhaps he is aloof from the
- 29:40group. 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have
- 29:46seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I
- 29:50shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my fingers
- 29:55into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side.
- 30:00I will not believe so. Thomas here is saying that he
- 30:06has been so disappointed with how the Lord was put to death
- 30:11and he had believed on him. And much like Judas, Judas had
- 30:20thought, and the disciples at large, and Jerusalem at large
- 30:25and Israel at large thought that their Messiah was coming to
- 30:29overthrow Roman rule. And here Thomas has been
- 30:34disappointed by his Lord, and he's saying, I refuse to be
- 30:38disappointed again. 26 And after 8 days, again his disciples were
- 30:47within, and Thomas with them. Then came Jesus, the doors being
- 30:53shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
- 30:58How many times has Jesus said peace be unto you?
- 31:02And there is no peace without a relationship with God through
- 31:08His Son Jesus Christ. We cannot even know what peace
- 31:13is until we come faithfully to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 31:19There is no peace outside of God.
- 31:21If you know Him, then you will know peace.
- 31:28And look at how they keep meeting on these Sundays.
- 31:31It was Sunday whenever the Lord resurrected.
- 31:34It was Sunday whenever He appeared to them.
- 31:38Look at how many times and we can see why we celebrate the
- 31:42Lord on Sunday morning. He is alive every single Sunday,
- 31:48the 1st day of the week we can celebrate.
- 31:52It doesn't always have to be on this particular Sunday that the
- 31:59Lord was resurrected as we mark on our calendars, it doesn't
- 32:04have to be. We can celebrate every single
- 32:07day of the week, friends, that he is alive and he is
- 32:11resurrected. 27 Then said he to Thomas, Reach here your finger,
- 32:17and behold, my hands, Reach here your hand, thrust it into my
- 32:21side, and be not faithless, but believing.
- 32:26So here's a gentle rebuke to Thomas.
- 32:29And we like to pick on Thomas and call him the doubter, but we
- 32:35know that Thomas did not want to be disappointed again.
- 32:42And here the Lord was so gentle with him, and he wanted him to
- 32:49believe. And we know that the foundations
- 32:52of New Jerusalem will have the names of these disciples.
- 32:58Even Matthias will have the names of these disciples written
- 33:03upon them, including Thomas, also known as the Twin. 28 And
- 33:09Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord, my God, can you
- 33:15say that today? We see that with the thief on
- 33:19the cross. We see that with Mary.
- 33:21We see that with the woman caught in the act of adultery.
- 33:25We see that here with Thomas. This is the turning point for
- 33:31us, when we no longer see Jesus as a good teacher and a prophet
- 33:37of old. But he is Lord, He is Adonai.
- 33:44Can you say that today? Can you say that Jesus is Lord
- 33:50over your life? He has full access to
- 33:53everything. There is nothing hidden from
- 33:55him. I pray that you can.
- 33:59Jesus is Lord. Every knee will bow and every
- 34:03tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
- 34:09And we need to know that. And it's better to do it on this
- 34:13side of eternity rather than to wait, because if you wait until
- 34:18next time, it'll be too late. 29 Jesus said unto him, Thomas,
- 34:28Because you have seen me, you have believed.
- 34:31Blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed.
- 34:36This Is Us now, friends, this is all of the believers from
- 34:42Thomas, forward from Thomas until right now.
- 34:47Jesus says we are more blessed. How amazing is that?
- 34:56How amazing is the fact that we are more blessed than Thomas
- 35:03because Thomas would not believe until he had seen it.
- 35:09And you and I, we have to take it by faith.
- 35:13We have to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus Christ to us by
- 35:19faith, friends, and it is by this faith that we have and the
- 35:25Bible tells us it's impossible to please God without faith.
- 35:29It is by this faith that we have that we can please God and that
- 35:35we can be more blessed. Pray that you are faithful and
- 35:41not faith less. 30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in
- 35:50the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this
- 35:53book. 31 will end here. But these are written that you
- 35:57might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that
- 36:03believing you might have life through his name.
- 36:07It's not. It couldn't be any more clear.
- 36:13How we must come unto the Lord Jesus Christ is by faith.
- 36:16It's by believing in His name. It's by believing that God
- 36:20raised him from the dead. It's by believing in faith,
- 36:23friends, that we are saved. It's by acknowledging that Jesus
- 36:29Christ is the only begotten, and it is by believing on His name
- 36:35that we will be saved. It's by believing that the Lord
- 36:39Jesus Christ is the only way unto the Father.
- 36:43Have you done that? Have you placed your faith in
- 36:46the Lord Jesus Christ? I pray that you have.
- 36:51It's a simple gospel. It is.
- 36:54The good news is very simple. We complicate it.
- 36:58It is a moment by moment, 2nd to 2nd, day by day decision that we
- 37:06make every single day to remain faithful to the Lord Jesus
- 37:12Christ and those that are apostate and those that have
- 37:17fallen away and those that ever announced their faith and gone
- 37:20back to the vomit friends, they were never his.
- 37:27But there are a lot of born again, blood bought believers
- 37:31who love the Lord Jesus Christ who are in a season of doubt,
- 37:37much like Thomas. But the Lord Jesus Christ knows
- 37:42just how to meet them where they're at and bring them back.
- 37:46Just like Peter when he denied the Lord three times and he
- 37:52comes in and he reinstates him. How amazing is our Lord God?
- 37:58He knows who belongs to him and it is his business to make sure
- 38:03that we make it to the end. And if you will not sear your
- 38:07conscience, and if you will not grieve the Holy Spirit, He will
- 38:12speak to you, and He will reveal His presence in your life in
- 38:19this still small voice. Let's not quench the Spirit
- 38:22today, friends. Let's cultivate and break up the
- 38:26fallow ground and allow the Holy Spirit to speak loudly and
- 38:31boldly in our lives. I hope you've been blessed by
- 38:34this chapter. I know I sure have.
- 38:39I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 38:42I love you. We'll see you back here
- 38:47tomorrow. God bless you.
