Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome into this week's episode of Inside the Charge.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I'm Maddy Glabbin.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Today we're joined by Bill's left tackle Dion Dawkins. It's
- 0:08Speaker 1: a doozy of a podcast. You know, anytime that Dion
- 0:11Speaker 1: opens his mouth, it's going to be a great time.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Dion gets into the mindset on the sidelines during their
- 0:17Speaker 1: epic comeback win over the Ravens. He gets real about
- 0:20Speaker 1: what players feel in those moments. Dion also discusses how
- 0:25Speaker 1: boxing and drifting have made him a better offensive lineman,
- 0:28Speaker 1: dives into why he thinks he's in year ten in
- 0:31Speaker 1: the NFL instead of year nine, and there's a lot
- 0:33Speaker 1: of laughs along the way.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Enjoy the episode.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Dion, you had a crazy comeback win against the Ravens
- 0:49Speaker 1: in week one. When did you smell it in the
- 0:52Speaker 1: air that Josh Allen was ripe for comeback.
- 0:55Speaker 3: When Josh looked at us on a sideline and said,
- 0:59Speaker 3: we're still in it, I looked at him like, all right,
- 1:05Speaker 3: that's when I knew that we were still in this game.
- 1:08Speaker 3: But anything can happen when Josh is on the field.
- 1:11Speaker 3: You know, natural competitive spirit, You get nervous, you look
- 1:16Speaker 3: at the score, You're like, wow, this is just one
- 1:20Speaker 3: of those ones.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Cool, it'd be like that.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And then you have an MVP quarterback that walks by
- 1:25Speaker 3: you and says, we're still in the game, stay in it.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I'm like, all right, here we go, let's pass pro,
- 1:32Speaker 3: let's plast block, let's get him down the field.
- 1:36Speaker 1: What are the sidelines like in games like that where
- 1:39Speaker 1: it's tight, the game is on the line, and there's
- 1:42Speaker 1: a lot.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Left to do to get the win.
- 1:44Speaker 4: You want to know the truth? Tell me you want
- 1:47Speaker 4: to lie or the truth?
- 1:47Speaker 2: The truth?
- 1:49Speaker 4: All right, I'll tell you a lie.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Everybody is on the field on the sideline in their
- 1:55Speaker 3: best spirit. Everybody's happy, jolly, doing their thing, singing kumbaya.
- 2:01Speaker 4: No, I'm absolutely joking.
- 2:05Speaker 3: You're asking about how the sideline is during those situations.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Because there's probably some guys who are raw ra and
- 2:11Speaker 1: can be that way in those moments. But you probably
- 2:14Speaker 1: have some players too who are a little down and
- 2:17Speaker 1: out and who need a pep talk for sure. How
- 2:19Speaker 1: do you, as a veteran approach that.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I'm very different, you know, I understand what's going on,
- 2:27Speaker 3: and when it comes down to it, just try your
- 2:30Speaker 3: best to do your job, try your best to do
- 2:32Speaker 3: your job, try your best not let not to be
- 2:36Speaker 3: the problem. You know, some sometimes things happen, Like when
- 2:39Speaker 3: you're onlineman, there's flags, and there's false starts, and there's
- 2:42Speaker 3: holdings and there's this, and there's penalties and there's that's that's.
- 2:46Speaker 4: A part of the game.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I keep my mind in what's next, next, Play next,
- 2:50Speaker 3: play next, play right. You do have a lot of
- 2:53Speaker 3: guys that are like very emotional, right, very emotional, and
- 2:57Speaker 3: very like, man, this come on, that's what football is.
- 3:02Speaker 3: But realistically, everybody's that I've seen in our first real battle,
- 3:06Speaker 3: everybody's kind of just neutral. Everybody's still like looking around
- 3:11Speaker 3: trying to find which guys which and who to lean
- 3:14Speaker 3: on and who to look at for confidence and you.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Know, But me, I just try to just stay here, man.
- 3:20Speaker 3: I just try to stay right where I'm at, and
- 3:23Speaker 3: I look at chrome and I see how chromer is
- 3:25Speaker 3: and control what we can block. If they call this display,
- 3:31Speaker 3: block that play, execute that play, we can't do anything.
- 3:34Speaker 4: We are blockers. Make sure you block.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Let the people that catch the ball catch the ball,
- 3:38Speaker 3: Let the people that run the ball run the ball.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Let the people that passed the ball pass the ball.
- 3:42Speaker 1: A lot of people are seeing that Josh Allen was
- 3:44Speaker 1: calm and confident in those moments, executing those drives to
- 3:49Speaker 1: come back from fifteen points behind.
- 3:52Speaker 2: You say you are play to play.
- 3:55Speaker 1: When did you grow into becoming that type of person
- 3:57Speaker 1: who could have that mindset that's not easy to do
- 4:00Speaker 1: in you know, year one, year two, where.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It's like it's the NFL isles, it's big.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I would say, honestly, Maddie, I'm very blessed when I
- 4:12Speaker 3: got into the league. I had a good group of
- 4:13Speaker 3: guys around, right with Sean McCoy, Richie Incognito, Eric Wood,
- 4:19Speaker 3: Ryan Groy, Jordan Mills, John Miller. You know, I had
- 4:23Speaker 3: a good room of guys, veteran guys that kind of
- 4:27Speaker 3: prepped me early. And then I had to be a
- 4:29Speaker 3: leader of the room early because all those guys left
- 4:31Speaker 3: very very quick. So year two and three I was
- 4:34Speaker 3: the leader of the old line room fast. So I
- 4:38Speaker 3: would say, like year two, like year two, like I
- 4:40Speaker 3: really adapted to the control what you can right, and
- 4:44Speaker 3: then even coach rule right like in college, like he
- 4:47Speaker 3: taught us that control and what you can be in
- 4:50Speaker 3: a moment, control and what you can don't be here,
- 4:52Speaker 3: don't be there, be present, right and controlling literally all
- 4:57Speaker 3: you can and just do your job. That's we have
- 5:00Speaker 3: this one eleven thing around the building and things like that.
- 5:03Speaker 3: That's literally what our minds are. Do your job, do
- 5:06Speaker 3: your one eleventh.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Right.
- 5:08Speaker 3: If we're talking on the mic, ask the best questions,
- 5:12Speaker 3: have the best you know, football guys, block, run, catch, pass, tackle,
- 5:20Speaker 3: call the call, block the play, execute kick, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 3: kick the game winner like things and like that, Like,
- 5:26Speaker 3: you know, do.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Your job, Do your job. Do your job.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Dean. You've been in the league for nine years?
- 5:39Speaker 4: Can I correct that?
- 5:39Speaker 2: That's a long time?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Can I correct that for the people that's watching.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I think a lot and I process stuff a lot.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Okay, put you on game new math, new math.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Okay, let's let's let's let's let's get the mathing. We
- 5:54Speaker 3: are in a good football team. I'm in year nine,
- 5:59Speaker 3: but I'm really in year ten. We've had enough games postseason.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Okay, I'm saying now.
- 6:07Speaker 3: To another credited season. So yes, I am in year nine.
- 6:13Speaker 3: So you is in year ten, right, That's just what
- 6:17Speaker 3: it is. You have some teams that end right after
- 6:20Speaker 3: Christmas January two, January fourth, Your season's over us. That
- 6:26Speaker 3: We're thankful for the Buffalo Bills. We've been playing postseason
- 6:31Speaker 3: year after year after year after year.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Those games have added.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Up to a tenth year to a tenth year in
- 6:38Speaker 3: my mind, that's where I'm at because my body is
- 6:41Speaker 3: talking about it.
- 6:41Speaker 4: But yes, I've been here for a long time.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Let me correct myself.
- 6:44Speaker 1: We've been in the league for ten years, Dan Good,
- 6:48Speaker 1: a long time. What's different about year ten?
- 6:51Speaker 3: My body feels like I'm in year twelve. No, the
- 6:56Speaker 3: difference is it's just experience. You know, you learn how
- 7:02Speaker 3: to love the game more, you learn how to process
- 7:05Speaker 3: the game better, you learn how to slow the game down.
- 7:09Speaker 4: And you have a bigger love for your community.
- 7:12Speaker 3: The longer that I'm here, the more emotions jump into
- 7:15Speaker 3: my lap.
- 7:16Speaker 4: And that's the scariest part, Right, get a little softer,
- 7:19Speaker 4: I get a little softer like for the community.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Like it's just it's just like, you know, it's just
- 7:25Speaker 3: like watching a kid grow up. You know, I've been
- 7:27Speaker 3: here a long time. I'm thankful to be here a
- 7:29Speaker 3: long time. But I would say that the biggest thing
- 7:34Speaker 3: is you slow the football game down.
- 7:36Speaker 4: I've mastered slowing the game down.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And sometimes you know you might make it look drastically
- 7:42Speaker 3: different from the rest because of how you process it.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Slowing the game down as an offensive lineman, hand placement
- 7:49Speaker 1: is so important to what you're doing. When you're slowing
- 7:52Speaker 1: the game down, you're probably able to fine tune those
- 7:55Speaker 1: details in a split second.
- 7:57Speaker 2: How do you perfect hand placement over time?
- 8:01Speaker 4: Boxing? I box.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Learned skill, but boxing, you know, like your hands just
- 8:08Speaker 3: don't magically get better. You have to work on it.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And I box, you know, and that's a gem, that
- 8:14Speaker 3: that is a gem.
- 8:15Speaker 4: But how do.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Boxing take your hand placement in the game to the
- 8:21Speaker 1: next level?
- 8:23Speaker 4: You know?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Have you ever been to like Dave and Busters, Yes,
- 8:26Speaker 3: or to the fair where you step into the game
- 8:29Speaker 3: and it has like all those lights and you got
- 8:31Speaker 3: to hit like the blue lights and right like you
- 8:33Speaker 3: know what I'm talking about?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Do you know what I'm talking about?
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yes, you take home the gold in those moments, probably
- 8:38Speaker 1: I walk away empty hand it.
- 8:41Speaker 4: That is what boxing does for you.
- 8:43Speaker 3: And when you're playing a defender and they're moving around
- 8:46Speaker 3: and you're looking at the target move in front of you,
- 8:49Speaker 3: and you got to hit the target right and you
- 8:51Speaker 3: gotta and that little v of the neck is moving
- 8:53Speaker 3: and you got to strike an opponent. That's what boxing
- 8:57Speaker 3: does for you because typically, like when you're in the
- 8:59Speaker 3: boxing ring and you're here, you're just jabbing. You're jabbing,
- 9:03Speaker 3: you're you're moving your head and you're and you're just
- 9:05Speaker 3: hitting the target the whole time, like while their head
- 9:07Speaker 3: is moving the whole time. So that's what I've picked up.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I looked at Trent. Trent boxed and I was like,
- 9:14Speaker 3: why is he always boxing?
- 9:16Speaker 4: Right?
- 9:16Speaker 3: And I'm like, if Trent's the best, I mean, I
- 9:18Speaker 3: want to look into it, Okay. So then I looked
- 9:20Speaker 3: into it and I was like, well, one, he's getting
- 9:23Speaker 3: conditioned from boxing. Two he's making his hands better, which
- 9:27Speaker 3: is making him better on the field from boxing.
- 9:29Speaker 4: And three his footwork is getting.
- 9:33Speaker 3: To an elite elite level because boxing is footwork as
- 9:36Speaker 3: well as striking. That's the best of the trifecta. Like,
- 9:40Speaker 3: why not adapted it into your game? So I said, Shoot,
- 9:43Speaker 3: I'm a box and boxing is a part of this
- 9:46Speaker 3: everyday life. Yep, and uh that's kind of what has
- 9:49Speaker 3: elevated that part of my game.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Senior praises when it comes to boxing, what's your best move, Dean?
- 9:55Speaker 3: My best move? Yeah, my jab oh, I'll jab you
- 9:58Speaker 3: to sleep. You know, straight jab, right hand jab, turn
- 10:02Speaker 3: them over boom. You know a lot of people don't
- 10:04Speaker 3: don't even know like how to really punch.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I probably don't. I'm one of those people.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You don't have to punch, Let us punch, okay, But
- 10:11Speaker 3: if you ever do have to punch, teach me.
- 10:14Speaker 4: You know the punches.
- 10:16Speaker 3: They all are here and everything turns over right, like
- 10:19Speaker 3: you want to turn your punch over. So these two
- 10:21Speaker 3: knuckles right here, if you ever look at your hand,
- 10:24Speaker 3: why they are lifted out of your hand, like if
- 10:27Speaker 3: you look at yours, these are down and this one's up.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yep.
- 10:29Speaker 3: This is the knuckle you want to hit people with.
- 10:32Speaker 3: That is the that's a jab, that's the sleeper. But
- 10:35Speaker 3: the jab is just straight, straight jab, just just to
- 10:37Speaker 3: keep them at distance, keep them away.
- 10:40Speaker 4: But jabs win win you to fight. They will win
- 10:43Speaker 4: you to fight.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Boxing.
- 10:45Speaker 1: You're into UFC. You went to the X Games this summer.
- 10:49Speaker 1: You're into cars, deon. If you weren't an NFL player,
- 10:53Speaker 1: what type of sports extreme sports would you be into
- 10:57Speaker 1: would you be doing?
- 11:00Speaker 4: Do you know Andrew? Who do you know Drew?
- 11:04Speaker 2: No? I don't think so.
- 11:08Speaker 4: You don't know Drew.
- 11:09Speaker 2: What Andrew.
- 11:11Speaker 4: True? True?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Right here?
- 11:14Speaker 4: True?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, of course I know Andrew.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I know Andrew too.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Uh.
- 11:21Speaker 4: I'm stalling because I don't know.
- 11:23Speaker 2: You don't know, I don't know.
- 11:25Speaker 3: I think Drew knows Drew. If I can do anything
- 11:28Speaker 3: outside of football, what would it be.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I think you would be the lead singer of a
- 11:33Speaker 1: lead singer of a pop punk band.
- 11:35Speaker 4: I do agree.
- 11:36Speaker 3: I told myself I love to be on stage one day,
- 11:41Speaker 3: singing and performing for a crowd.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I'm a huge Chris Brown fan, huge Tea Paint fan.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Tea Paint is actually coming in October, which I want
- 11:51Speaker 3: people to know. Gon't support Tea Pain right, I'll be there.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I will be there, and I want the Mafia there.
- 12:01Speaker 3: MafA needs to show our people. But I don't know.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I would maybe like try to be a WW wrestler
- 12:08Speaker 3: like right now, as well as a drifter. Drifting is
- 12:12Speaker 3: bread and butter, but something on like I like, like
- 12:15Speaker 3: I'm an entertainer, Like I like to be on camera.
- 12:17Speaker 4: I love production. I like the crew. I like the
- 12:21Speaker 4: crew more than I love being on camera.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Like I like hanging with the crew, like the it's
- 12:26Speaker 3: a good hang deon'.
- 12:27Speaker 4: It's a it's a good hang.
- 12:29Speaker 3: So I don't know, but it would be something on
- 12:31Speaker 3: TV or something in my own funnel podcast world. I'll
- 12:35Speaker 3: be doing something with my crew, traveling and just having
- 12:38Speaker 3: a good time with the crew and being around with
- 12:41Speaker 3: the crew.
- 12:42Speaker 1: In Hard Knocks, you were featured drifting, which was epic.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Facts.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You spoke about how boxing makes you a better offensive lineman.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Are there any elements of drifting that make you a
- 12:53Speaker 1: better NFL player?
- 12:55Speaker 3: Is there any elements of drifting that make me a
- 12:58Speaker 3: better NFL player? Yes, Peripheral vision and hand eye coordination
- 13:04Speaker 3: of the e break and the shifter your feet is
- 13:10Speaker 3: all I mean, Like your feet is gas break clutch.
- 13:15Speaker 3: So yes, when you're driving and you're spinning the wheel,
- 13:20Speaker 3: you're looking out the side of your eyes as well
- 13:22Speaker 3: as the front of your eyes. The car goes where
- 13:25Speaker 3: your eyes go, as well as your football play. Your
- 13:28Speaker 3: eyes and your head is your steering wheel. If you're
- 13:31Speaker 3: looking down, you're probably gonna fall. Okay, if you're looking
- 13:34Speaker 3: at this opponent here, that's probably where you're gonna go.
- 13:37Speaker 4: If you're looking here, you're trying to go here. You
- 13:39Speaker 4: might not get there. But I look at that as
- 13:43Speaker 4: in the car.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Yes, the peripheral vision helps within my football world. It's
- 13:48Speaker 3: not a drastic bonus, but it helps, you know, because
- 13:52Speaker 3: you're looking at the car and that's next to you,
- 13:54Speaker 3: and you're looking here, and you're looking on the side,
- 13:56Speaker 3: and you're just glimpsing over like this.
- 14:00Speaker 4: While you're driving.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Makes sense. We gotta get you meetings in a second.
- 14:06Speaker 1: But one last question for you. You have a mural
- 14:11Speaker 1: in Buffalo of your face. You're making an awesome face
- 14:14Speaker 1: in it. The words we believe are at the top.
- 14:19Speaker 1: What was your reaction when you found out your face
- 14:22Speaker 1: would be on a wall in the city of Buffalo.
- 14:26Speaker 4: It's just cool. It's just cool to like.
- 14:31Speaker 3: To just be loved, right, Like I enjoy being loved
- 14:36Speaker 3: right and I enjoyed loving people. I think when you
- 14:39Speaker 3: do things well, it shouldn't just get overlooked. We should
- 14:45Speaker 3: celebrate it.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I'm not saying that everything and that you do well,
- 14:49Speaker 3: like there should be murals of everybody, but like, the
- 14:51Speaker 3: organic love that you share with the people is true.
- 14:56Speaker 4: And I love this community. I love the people here.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I love where I'm at, like I love everything about
- 15:01Speaker 3: where I'm at in my time, in my life. I
- 15:04Speaker 3: love everything about it and to have that energy. What's
- 15:08Speaker 3: the word reciprocated, right, I think it's just a beautiful thing.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I'm a true believer and people.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Should receive organic and what they deserve, right, Like you're
- 15:26Speaker 3: a great interviewer, you're a great writer, whatever it is
- 15:30Speaker 3: that you do as a whole, you're great. Whatever it
- 15:36Speaker 3: is you should receive that shows that you're great. I
- 15:39Speaker 3: want you to have it, as well as Drew and Crew,
- 15:43Speaker 3: as well as Josh, as well as the people that
- 15:46Speaker 3: walk around with them, big cameras, everything. If you're good
- 15:49Speaker 3: at your job, have something to show and receive something
- 15:53Speaker 3: that shows that you're good.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Right. It just makes no sense.
- 15:57Speaker 3: But to the mireal part, I look at that like
- 16:00Speaker 3: a trophy, right, I'm honored to receive that and have
- 16:05Speaker 3: that connection with the community that they have my face up,
- 16:09Speaker 3: I think it's my body too. Like downtown, I think
- 16:13Speaker 3: it's Oxford Pennant, right, So shout out to them, you.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Know it's it's It's really a beautiful thing.
- 16:20Speaker 3: And I get emotional about it because I'm just a kid, right,
- 16:24Speaker 3: I'm just a grown man kid from Rahway that just
- 16:27Speaker 3: enjoys having a good time and just spreading love and
- 16:30Speaker 3: just supporting life, you know, but it's it's a beautiful thing.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Like shoot, I feel like Lebron James.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Man, You're Lebron James to us, Dion, and I love
- 16:42Speaker 1: that you're feeling love from the community.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I also love that the world got to see who you.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Are and hard knocks this season because they deserve it.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Everybody deserves a dose of Dion Dawkins in their life.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Bitter Snow a little thanks for the time, appreciate always.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Inside the Charge.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Make sure you like and subscribe and stay tuned for
- 17:03Speaker 1: more podcasts coming your way.
