Jockey Sena Imamura made history at the 87th Oaks race in Tokyo
0:15
on May 24th, 2026 riding Juryoku Piero.
0:20
The 22 year old became the first JRA female jockey to win AG1
0:25
Classic race. Jorioku Piro, the fifth
0:28
favorite, secured the ¥150 million prize.
0:32
Imamura described the victory as like a dream.
0:36
Reports on May 23rd indicate the US and Iran are nearing an
0:41
agreement. This deal includes a 60 day
0:44
ceasefire extension and the reopening of the Strait of
0:47
Hormuz. Iran's oil export limits would
0:51
ease and talks would begin to curb its nuclear program.
0:55
Iran would remove mines, while the US would lift some
0:58
sanctions. In Asahikawa, zookeeper Tatsuya
1:03
Suzuki, 383, rearrested for his wife's murder, reportedly
1:08
searched strangulation and incinerator time online months
1:12
before police found these searches on his smartphone,
1:14
suggesting the killing was planned.
1:17
Suzuki was previously indicted for burning his wife's body at
1:20
Asahiyama Zoo. A shooting occurred near the
1:24
White House in Washington, DC on May 23, the Secret Service
1:29
reported. One suspect died and one
1:32
civilian was injured nearby. President Trump was not affected
1:36
by the incident. Authorities are investigating
1:39
the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
1:43
Dao Okamoto has made history, becoming the first Japanese
1:47
actress to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
1:51
She received the award jointly with Virginia Afira for her role
1:55
in director Ryuske Humaguchi's film Suddenly Feeling Unwell.
1:59
The prestigious award was announced on May 24th.
2:04
Philippine authorities arrested Yuto Keno, a 42 year old
2:08
Japanese man wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting
2:12
three children in Hokkaido in 2018.
2:16
Keno fled to the Philippines in 2019.
2:19
An arrest warrant was issued in 2024.
2:22
Electronic devices containing child sexual abuse materials
2:26
were seized. Keno faces deportation to Japan.
2:31
Japan's duty lawyer system, offering free legal
2:35
consultations to arrested suspects faces collapse.
2:40
The number of registered lawyers is at a record low, just 30.7%
2:45
last year. The system, funded by Bar
2:48
Association fees and lawyers public service spirit, is
2:52
unsustainable due to low compensation.
2:55
Osaka has declared an emergency situation.
2:59
Elderly foreign residents in Japan increasingly face poverty,
3:03
losing jobs and lacking pensions.
3:06
Most are ineligible for public welfare, a rule some want to
3:10
tighten. Support groups, like those in
3:13
Gunma's Oizumi town, assist these individuals.
3:16
Many struggle with Japanese, affecting their access to
3:20
benefits and employment. Japan's disaster weather
3:24
warnings are changing to a new five level system, introducing a
3:29
Level 4 dangerous warning. This aims for clearer
3:33
information urging evacuation by level 4, which indicates
3:38
imminent danger. Level 5 means disaster is
3:42
happening, requiring immediate safety measures.
3:46
These updates address previous information complexity.
3:50
A survey by Asahi Shimbun revealed that nearly 90% of
3:54
Japanese parents desire more sex education in schools.
3:59
Furthermore, 70% believe the stoppage clause, which limits
4:03
topics like pregnancy in the curriculum, is unnecessary.
4:08
Parents want clearer, comprehensive sex education,
4:11
with 94% urging a review of these restrictive guidelines.
4:22
A 33 year old employee at Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa,
4:27
Hokkaido was re arrested for allegedly killing his wife.
4:32
Police investigations revealed he had searched for information
4:35
about killing acts on his smartphone for several months
4:39
before the incident. This discovery suggests
4:42
premeditation in the case. A brown bear was frequently
4:46
sighted near a ski jump in Shibetsu City, Hokkaido, only
4:51
100 meters from residential areas.
4:54
After another sighting on May 24th, the city decided to use
4:59
emergency hunting to cull the bear.
5:02
This measure allows local governments to use shotguns to
5:05
eliminate dangerous wildlife. During Fukushima's traditional
5:11
Soma Nomai Festival, a horse in the armored horse race went off
5:16
course after its rider fell. The horse then collided with
5:20
spectators, injuring 3 people. They were transported to a
5:25
hospital, but their injuries are fortunately not life
5:28
threatening. The Nuclear Non Proliferation
5:32
Treaty Review Conference ended without adopting a final
5:36
document, sparking widespread disappointment.
5:39
Atomic bomb survivors and the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
5:44
expressed deep regret. They criticized the failure to
5:47
show a sincere commitment towards achieving a world free
5:51
of nuclear weapons. Tumoyuki Mimaki, 84A Hidonkio
5:58
representative and 2024 Nobel Peace Prize winner, is stepping
6:03
down as chairman of Hiroshima Prefectural Hidonkio due to poor
6:07
health. He will continue as a Hidonkio
6:10
representative. Harada Hiroshi, 86, former
6:14
director of the Atomic Bomb Memorial Museum, is expected to
6:18
succeed him. Elderly foreign residents in
6:22
Japan increasingly face severe financial hardship, often losing
6:26
jobs and lacking pensions. Most foreigners are ineligible
6:30
for public assistance, and there are calls to tighten these
6:33
rules. Support groups like those in
6:36
Goonma Prefecture are working to assist these vulnerable
6:39
individuals. Japan's on call lawyer system
6:44
offering free consultations to suspects right after arrest
6:48
faces a crisis. Many lawyers are withdrawing.
6:52
With registrations at a record low of 30.7%, supported by Bar
6:58
Association fees and lawyers, public service Spirit, the
7:02
system is reaching its limits largely due to low compensation.
7:07
Japan's disaster weather information, including warnings,
7:11
is changing significantly. A new five level system will be
7:15
introduced, adding a level 4 dangerous warning.
7:19
This aims to simplify information linking it to
7:23
existing rain alert levels. The crucial point is to complete
7:27
evacuations from dangerous areas by level 4.
7:31
A linear rain band formed over central and southern Okinawa
7:36
Island on May 23rd night, prompting significant heavy rain
7:40
information. Although heavy rain clouds are
7:43
moving away, the ground remains loose from previous rainfall.
7:47
The Japan Meteorological Agency urges continued vigilance for
7:52
potential landslides in the area.
7:55
LDP Policy Research Council Chairman Kobayashi reaffirmed
8:00
his opposition to granting imperial family status to
8:03
spouses and children of female imperial family members.
8:07
This concerns instances where female Royals would remain in
8:11
the imperial household after marriage as part of ongoing
8:15
discussions about stable imperial succession.
8:20
To give a business condemn on useless.
8:25
Nissan has cancelled its plan to produce electric vehicle
8:30
powertrains in the UK. This decision is part of a
8:34
business restructuring aiming to reduce the number of vehicle
8:38
factories and overall production capacity.
8:41
It's subsidiary Jatco was set to build a factory in Sunderland by
8:46
2026. Now, Nissan's UKEV plant will
8:51
likely receive powertrains from Japan instead.
8:55
Urban redevelopment projects in Japan are facing widespread
8:59
delays and cancellations. Soaring construction costs from
9:03
expensive materials and labor shortages make them
9:06
unprofitable. The Middle East situation also
9:10
causes unstable material procurement.
9:13
This impacts future city planning, for instance the
9:16
Imperial Hotel Tokyo postponing its main building reconstruction
9:20
and the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa revising its rebuilding
9:24
schedule. Diet leaders are rushing to
9:28
finalize proposals for a stable imperial succession, aiming to
9:33
present them next week. The plan will likely suggest
9:37
female imperial family members can remain in the family after
9:40
marriage. However, political parties are
9:43
still discussing whether their spouses and children would also
9:46
become imperial family members. The government plans ¥100
9:51
billion to support LP gas households, especially in rural
9:56
areas amid the Middle East conflict.
9:59
A 2026 supplementary budget is set to increase local grants for
10:03
this purpose. Furthermore ¥2.5 trillion in
10:08
reserves is planned for Middle East responses.
10:11
Prime Minister Takaichi Sanaye will soon explain the overall ¥3
10:16
trillion budget. Representatives from various
10:20
political parties recently debated constitutional amendment
10:24
on NHK's Sunday debate. They discussed the pros and cons
10:29
of changing the constitution and how to move forward with
10:32
discussions in Diet committees. A Liberal Democratic Party
10:36
official noted there is significant momentum building
10:39
for constitutional reform. Economy Minister Akazawa met
10:44
Chinese Commerce Minister Wang at the APEC meeting.
10:47
This was the first ministerial contact since Prime Minister
10:51
Takaichi's Taiwan remarks last November.
10:55
Akazawa requested China correct its arbitrary export controls on
10:59
rare earths. China had strengthened these
11:02
export controls on dual use products to Japan after the
11:06
prime minister's comments. Japan faces drug loss where new
11:12
foreign medications aren't sold due to profitability concerns.
11:16
This issue is linked to U.S. President Trump's most favored
11:20
nation drug pricing policy. For example, Imrulio, a breast
11:25
cancer drug approved in late 2025, still lacks a price and is
11:30
unavailable. This unusual delay raises fears
11:34
about future access to vital medicines.
11:38
Japan's government plans a ¥3 trillion supplementary budget
11:42
due to the Middle East situation.
11:45
It will increase contingency funds and continue gasoline
11:49
subsidies funded by deficit bonds.
11:52
Officials aim to limit new issuance by offsetting it with
11:55
last year's unissued bonds. This seeks to ease concerns
12:00
about fiscal deterioration despite the ongoing large costs.
12:05
The new Child and Childcare Support Fund system has started,
12:09
with deductions appearing in May salaries for many.
12:13
Confusion exists about whether the actual financial burden is
12:17
0. For employees, the average
12:20
monthly deduction is around ¥500.
12:22
This amount is 0.23% of their standard monthly remuneration,
12:27
with employers covering half. A cross party National Council
12:32
is making final adjustments for Japan's new benefit linked tax
12:36
credit system. They are urgently resolving
12:39
remaining issues, including defining the income levels
12:43
eligible for support and determining the methods for tax
12:46
reduction. These efforts aim to complete an
12:49
interim report on the system's design before summer.

13:00
JRA female jockey Sena Imamura, 22, won the G1 Oaks on May 24th.
13:09
This marks her first G1 victory and the first time AJRA female
13:14
jockey has won one of the five major classic races.
13:17
She also becomes the first JRA female jockey to claim AG One
13:21
title. Imamura achieved 51 wins as a
13:25
rookie in 2022. Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki
13:31
secured his third win of the season against the Brewers.
13:35
He struggled early but managed to pitch 5 innings, allowing
13:40
three runs in the same game. Dodgers star Shohei Otani
13:45
contributed with two hits and one RBI, including a timely hit
13:50
helping the team. Dion Viciado, who played for
13:54
Denna and was the professional baseball batting champion in
13:57
2018, is set to retire. The 37 year old infielder from
14:03
Cuba played for the Chunichi Dragons starting in 2016.
14:08
He had a successful career known for his powerful hitting.
14:12
Iran's National Football team has moved its World Cup training
14:16
base from the US to Mexico. On May 23rd, the Iran Football
14:22
Federation announced FIFA approved this change, citing
14:26
difficulties in obtaining US visas.
14:29
The team will now be based in Tijuana, Mexico, simplifying
14:33
travel logistics. Golfer Yusaku Hosono, 23,
14:40
secured his long-awaited first tour victory at a major, the
14:44
Japan Professional Golf Championship on May 24th.

This historic win marks the first time a Japanese
14:52
left-handed golfer has claimed a major title in 35 years.
14:56
Hosono's achievement was celebrated by fans.
15:00
World heavyweight champion Oleksander Usyk won his title
15:05
defense in Egypt on May 23, defeating Rico Verhoeven by 11th
15:10
round. TKO Usyk kept his undefeated
15:14
record. However, the referee's decision
15:17
to stop the fight drew widespread criticism.
15:21
Many questioned the early stoppage, with some calling for
15:24
the referee's permanent ban. WBO Women's Super Flyweight
15:31
Champion Mizuki Hiruda successfully defended her title
15:36
for the 7th time on May 23rd in Giza, Egypt.
15:40
The 30 year old southpaw defeated challenger Mai Solomon
15:44
of Australia by a unanimous 3 to zero decision.
15:47
Hiruda dominated with speed and punches, maintaining her
15:51
undefeated record of 11 wins. Oryx Buffalo's pitcher Taisuke
15:57
Yamaoka was pulled from his first start in three years
16:00
against Saibu on May 24th. He lasted less than one inning,
16:06
throwing only 20 pitches and allowing two runs.
16:09
Yamaoka gave up a solo home run on his first pitch and struggled
16:13
with control, leading to an early exit.
16:17
The first ever Enhanced Games, an international competition
16:22
allowing doping, is set to begin in Las Vegas, US on May 24th.
16:27
CEO Martin Maximilian predicts many world records will be
16:31
broken. Athletes can use FDA approved
16:34
substances under medical supervision.
16:37
Winners across track, swimming and weightlifting will receive
16:41
$250,000. Golfer Shiho Kawaki, 23,
16:47
achieved a rare albatross at the Bridgestone Ladies Open on May
16:51
24th on the 2nd hole, a par 5, her second shot from 200 yards
16:57
out rolled directly into the cup.
16:59
This marks the first albatross on the domestic women's tour in
17:03
11 years and the 13th such feat. A shooting occurred near the
17:15
White House in Washington, DC on the 23rd.
17:19
The Secret Service responsible for presidential security
17:23
announced that one suspect died and one nearby civilian was
17:27
injured. President Trump was not affected
17:30
by the incident. President Trump announced on May
17:34
23rd that an agreement with Iran is almost complete.
17:39
He stated the Strait of Hormuz, vital for energy transport, will
17:43
be opened. Iranian sources confirmed
17:46
readiness to sign a ceasefire memorandum.
17:49
This agreement reportedly includes a 60 day ceasefire,
17:53
free navigation in Hormuz, and Iran's pledge not to pursue
17:57
nuclear weapons. A coal mine explosion occurred
18:02
in Shanxi Province, China, on May 22nd.
18:06
The incident resulted in 82 deaths and 128 people being
18:11
hospitalized for treatment. Chinese authorities have
18:14
detained the mine's officials and are thoroughly investigating
18:17
the cause of the accident. The US has informed Japan that
18:22
the delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles will be delayed by up
18:26
to two years. This delay is attributed to the
18:30
US military's significant use of ammunition in recent attacks on
18:34
Iran. This could impact Japan's plan
18:37
to acquire up to 400 Tomahawks by fiscal year 2027, intended as
18:43
a temporary measure. Ukrainian President Zelensky
18:49
announced an attack on a Russian military related company located
18:54
1700 kilometers from the border. This follows Ukraine's drone
18:59
attack on the outskirts of Moscow on May 17th.
19:02
These actions indicate Ukraine is intensifying its long range
19:06
strikes against Russia. North Korea's Rodong Sinman
19:11
newspaper reported on May 24th, the Neonado women's football
19:16
team won the Women's Asia Champions League.
19:19
They defeated Japan's NTV Tokyo Verde Balaisa 10, in the final.
19:26
The paper praised the victory as a great source of inspiration
19:29
for the people. This was the first time North
19:32
Korean athletes competed in South Korea in about 7 1/2
19:35
years. During the US China Summit in
19:40
Beijing on May 14th, Chinese President Xi Jinping criticized
19:45
Prime Minister Takaichi by name, claiming XI and Taiwan's
19:49
President Lai Qingtai threatened regional peace.
19:53
U.S. President Trump, however,
19:55
defended Takaichi's leadership. Trump later called Takaichi to
19:59
confirm close US, Japan cooperation.
20:02
Japanese government officials anticipate prolonged tensions
20:06
with China. The APEC Trade Ministers meeting
20:10
in China concluded on May 23rd. With the tense Middle East
20:14
situation in mind, ministers agreed to cooperate.
20:18
Their goal is to maintain resilient supply chains for
20:22
essential goods, including energy.
20:26
The Non Proliferation Treaty Review Conference ended without
20:30
adopting a final document, marking the third consecutive
20:33
failure after 2015 and 2022. Experts noted the negotiations
20:38
were very difficult. They highlighted that a clause
20:41
on North Korea's denuclearization was removed
20:44
from the final draft, potentially weakening the NPT
20:47
system's credibility. Ukrainian President Zelensky
20:52
sent a letter to EU leaders on May 22nd rejecting a proposal
20:57
for Ukraine to become an EU associate member without voting
21:01
rights. He called the plan unfair.
21:04
German Chancellor Merce had proposed this, believing full EU
21:09
membership by 2027 is unrealistic.
21:13
Zelensky insists Ukraine should have full rights within the EU.
21:26
Tao Okamoto won best actress at the 79th Cannes Film Festival
21:31
for Ryuske Hamaguchi's Suddenly I Feel Unwell.

21:42
Best Actress award at Cannes. Okamoto expressed gratitude to
21:46
director Hamaguchi. The film, based on a book about
21:50
life and illness, will be released in Japan on June 19th.

23:06
clean sweep of three wins to 0. This victory brings Fukuma's
23:11
total title acquisitions to 68. Two historic private houses are
23:17
set to become Japan's first national treasures.
23:21

23:26
century, and the former Faroui family residence in Himeji from
23:30
the 15th century were recommended by the Cultural
23:33
Council on May 22nd. These thatched roof homes,
23:37
previously known as Thousand Year Houses, are recognized for
23:41
their profound cultural and historical significance.

busy and precious days. TV Asahi apologized on May 23rd
24:40
for inappropriate questions and intentional staging on its
24:44
variety show. Ano Channel aired May 18th.
24:48
A segment broadcast a participant naming a disliked
24:52
celebrity. TV Asahi admitted a lack of
24:55
consideration caused discomfort and misrepresented the
24:58
participant. The network stated full
25:01
responsibility lies with the production side.
25:05
A Chinese film based on a true story of a wife who stabbed her
25:10
husband has been cancelled after public criticism.
25:13
The movie Mother from Prison, starring the actual woman, was
25:17
accused of distorting criminal facts by portraying her act as
25:21
self-defense against domestic violence, contradicting court
25:25
findings. The film had previously won an
25:28
award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
25:33
Rintaro Karimata, 52A Ryukyu broadcasting announcer, suffered
25:39
a stroke in September 2023. Emergency surgery saved his
25:43
life, but he developed severe aphasia, losing the ability to
25:48
speak or understand. Karimata, a word professional,
25:53
described the experience as losing his identity.
25:56
He is now undergoing intense rehabilitation to regain his
26:00
language skills.
