- 0:07Speaker 1: In twenty thirteen, a Florida couple was arguing in their home.
- 0:12Speaker 1: It wasn't out of the ordinary, In fact, it was
- 0:14Speaker 1: rather common for their relationship. However, things took a turn
- 0:18Speaker 1: for the worse when one pulled out a gun and
- 0:21Speaker 1: shot their partner dead. Then, for whatever reason, they decided
- 0:27Speaker 1: to post pictures of their body on Facebook, and then
- 0:32Speaker 1: they walked into the police station to turn themselves in.
- 0:37Speaker 1: This is the cold story of Derek Medina and the
- 0:41Speaker 1: murder of Jennifer Alfonso.
- 0:45Speaker 2: My name's Ben, I'm Nicole, and you're listening to Wicked
- 0:49Speaker 2: and Grim.
- 0:49Speaker 3: A true crime podcast. The following.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Your audience.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Rush happy end of the week.
- 1:20Speaker 1: It is Friday, or if you're listening to this on
- 1:24Speaker 1: the day it's posted, it's Friday, which means the weekend's
- 1:28Speaker 1: just a few hours away.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Or a lot of people might listen on the weekend.
- 1:32Speaker 1: You know exactly we posted this. It's almost the weekend.
- 1:36Speaker 1: If it's the weekend while you're listening, just celebrate that weekend.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Take that extra little relaxing time you deserve it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you do, you know, working for ourselves, though I
- 1:46Speaker 2: don't even really know what a weekend is anymore. I
- 1:48Speaker 2: want to change that because like, my busy time is
- 1:52Speaker 2: usually the weekend. Like SAT people are like, oh, have
- 1:54Speaker 2: a good weekend, But that's usually when I'm like, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: going hard here.
- 1:58Speaker 1: If you're working on the weekend, you can still say
- 2:01Speaker 1: have a good weekend. A weekend is like a period
- 2:04Speaker 1: of time.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I guess, but it's not necessarily a weekend where you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: you get to rest a break. Yeah, have your little
- 2:11Speaker 2: break and all that jazz.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Fair enough, but you can still have a good weekend
- 2:15Speaker 1: whether you're busy or working or not.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Touche touche. But I'd like to have a weekend where
- 2:19Speaker 2: it's actually resting.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Well, you were going to be booking yourself a week
- 2:23Speaker 1: off here soon. Maybe make sure that's going to be
- 2:25Speaker 1: an effect and you're actually going to get it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe that will happen. We'll see. Maybe we'll keep
- 2:29Speaker 2: you updated.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's probably not gonna happen for a while, but
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'm rooting for you.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Let's just say that, Hey, it's as happen next week.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It's gonna happen. It's gonna happen in March. I think
- 2:39Speaker 2: it's gonna happen.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, Yeah, Well this is a concept we've covered
- 2:45Speaker 1: on the show before where someone has done something and
- 2:49Speaker 1: then posted explicit photos of a violent act onto social media,
- 2:54Speaker 1: And in all honesty, I think in today's age, where
- 2:57Speaker 1: social media is so ingrained into our society, we may
- 3:01Speaker 1: see this happen more and more.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Unfortunately.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It's very odd though it is, but.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I do have high hopes because I mean a lot
- 3:10Speaker 1: of people are against AI for many reasons, and I
- 3:12Speaker 1: totally get it, but I do have high hopes that
- 3:14Speaker 1: AI may actually be able to block these things from
- 3:17Speaker 1: being seen as soon as they're uploaded.
- 3:21Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean AI can be used for so many things,
- 3:25Speaker 2: and I sometimes think we're using it for the things
- 3:28Speaker 2: we should.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Well, I do think that we are just in the
- 3:31Speaker 1: tip of the iceberg when it comes to AI.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Very true, so very true. I just saw something online
- 3:35Speaker 2: though about it like potentially being able to predict breast
- 3:39Speaker 2: cancer or certain cancers and stuff, and I'm like, Okay,
- 3:42Speaker 2: that would be amazing. That could save a lot of lives.
- 3:46Speaker 3: That would honestly, we should get into this though. Are
- 3:50Speaker 3: you ready?
- 3:50Speaker 2: I'm ready?
- 3:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So this is as I mentioned the story of Derek
- 3:54Speaker 1: Medina and the murder of Jennifer Alfonso. This story has
- 3:57Speaker 1: also been dubbed the face book Killer.
- 4:01Speaker 2: The Facebook Killer.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Now, in a little bit of a Google search, this
- 4:04Speaker 1: is not the only quote unquote Facebook killer story, but
- 4:08Speaker 1: this story has been given that title along with a
- 4:10Speaker 1: few others. Now, Derek Medina came into the world back
- 4:13Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty two, right in the heart of Florida.
- 4:17Speaker 1: He finished up high school at Coral Gables in two
- 4:20Speaker 1: thousand and one. Now, if there's one thing you could
- 4:23Speaker 1: say about Derek, it's that this guy couldn't really seem
- 4:26Speaker 1: to pick a lane. He dabbled in just about everything.
- 4:30Speaker 1: One of his proudest claims was that he was an
- 4:33Speaker 1: undefeated amateur boxer, supposedly racking up twenty five wins with
- 4:37Speaker 1: zero losses. Now, that's honestly a very impressive record, but
- 4:43Speaker 1: that's also just according to him. Okay, Yeah, as far
- 4:49Speaker 1: as I could find, there was no backup, nothing, no
- 4:52Speaker 1: information to back up this claim.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Really, Yes, okay, I mean, you can make up a
- 4:56Speaker 2: lot of shit if you wanted to.
- 4:58Speaker 3: You can.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I mean, I've been to space, was I've an astronaut.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I have been to the International Space Station, stayed there
- 5:04Speaker 1: for three days and it came back down right on.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that must have been quite an adventure.
- 5:09Speaker 3: It was.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It lasted only eight hours because it was a dream
- 5:12Speaker 1: that I had the other night. But I digress. So
- 5:17Speaker 1: now here's the thing though about Derek. He wasn't exactly
- 5:19Speaker 1: shy about putting himself out there, and to be honest,
- 5:22Speaker 1: that's like probably also his downfall.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Let's be honest.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Now, as far as I can tell, there wasn't that
- 5:31Speaker 1: boxing record, But whether it was actually knocking people out
- 5:33Speaker 1: in the ring as he so claimed, or maybe it
- 5:36Speaker 1: was shooting hoops or trying his hand at golf. Derek
- 5:39Speaker 1: saw himself as a guy that was destined for greatness
- 5:42Speaker 1: at something. Writing was just another one of those things,
- 5:47Speaker 1: one of his many hobbies, and he went on to
- 5:50Speaker 1: publish a bunch of self published books. Now what kind
- 5:54Speaker 1: of books.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Did he write.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Well, let's just let's just say that writing and editing
- 5:59Speaker 1: and stuff it was not his strong suit.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He seemed to think that the key to writing a
- 6:05Speaker 1: best selling novel was apparently cramming as many words as
- 6:08Speaker 1: he could onto the title of a book as he
- 6:11Speaker 1: possibly could.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Because of the title itself, means.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Into the title of itself.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yes, so this is the title of one of his
- 6:20Speaker 1: books that he wrote quote, how a judgmental, unselfish attitude
- 6:25Speaker 1: is destroying the world we live in because the world
- 6:28Speaker 1: is vanishing beneath our eyes.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Holy okay, I've never heard of anything like that.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Then he also wrote quote humans who are gifted and
- 6:37Speaker 1: can see the supernatural spirit ghost world we live in
- 6:41Speaker 1: called ghost haunted adventures.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Huh okay.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Then there's also quote how I saved someone's life, on marriage,
- 6:50Speaker 1: on family problems, true communication, attention, world, save yourself, and
- 6:54Speaker 1: if the world ended today, how would you react to
- 6:57Speaker 1: saving the world or helping the world or would it
- 6:59Speaker 1: be all over for you?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Is that one book?
- 7:03Speaker 3: That was one book?
- 7:04Speaker 2: Okay? Because for some reason I thought there was a
- 7:06Speaker 2: numerous in there.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Nope.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Well, I mean I listed three books in totally Yes.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But that last one, I'm like, that seems like that's
- 7:13Speaker 2: too many topics.
- 7:14Speaker 1: For one book that is a singular book title.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Hey, but I also do have to say that I
- 7:20Speaker 2: love Cake like the confidence because sometimes confidence is key
- 7:24Speaker 2: to success, right, and he isn't lacking that. How he
- 7:28Speaker 2: was like, I am going to be great at something
- 7:30Speaker 2: or whatever, he's whatever. You said like that, I do
- 7:33Speaker 2: like that.
- 7:33Speaker 3: That is true.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I mean, ignorance is bliss, as they say, and he
- 7:38Speaker 1: was very ignorant to his lack of writing skills, but
- 7:41Speaker 1: he was certainly confident that he was going to do
- 7:43Speaker 1: it regardless.
- 7:44Speaker 2: We'll do something and do something great. So I'm true
- 7:47Speaker 2: right now, I almost feel like I'm rooting for him,
- 7:49Speaker 2: which I'll be changing my mind.
- 7:50Speaker 1: You most certainly will. But I mean, yeah, props to
- 7:53Speaker 1: him for going out there and doing his best at
- 7:55Speaker 1: some of these things. Hey, fly at it, that's awesome.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But yeah, he didn't do the greatest.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Put it that way.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But no matter what he was chasing, whether it was boxing, writing,
- 8:03Speaker 1: or whatever, new obsessions popped into his head all the time,
- 8:08Speaker 1: it all seemed to and it all seemed to boil
- 8:09Speaker 1: down to one thing. He wanted to be famous. He
- 8:13Speaker 1: even took a crack at acting, managing to land a
- 8:15Speaker 1: few tiny like background roles on TV one where he
- 8:18Speaker 1: even had like a one one word line.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Oh really, and he probably thought that was just the
- 8:23Speaker 2: best shit.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah, basically, he basically just was in enough to say
- 8:28Speaker 1: he was technically on television. Okay, But for all his hobbies,
- 8:34Speaker 1: his self published books, his dreams of stardom. Derek did
- 8:38Speaker 1: eventually become famous, just not in the way he was hoping.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Instead of landing in the spotlight for his quote unquote talents,
- 8:45Speaker 1: Let's say he secured a place in history as a
- 8:48Speaker 1: full blown grade a piece of shit murderer. So congrats, Derek,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you made it. I just want to say that, But
- 8:55Speaker 1: I am getting ahead of myself, so I digress.
- 8:58Speaker 2: That is not making it. No, No, but I mean,
- 9:00Speaker 2: like not in a good way.
- 9:03Speaker 3: No, But he accomplished his goal technically.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I guess, yeah, you could say that. Now.
- 9:09Speaker 1: For a while, Derek tried his hand at a more
- 9:11Speaker 1: regular job too. He worked as a property manager, though
- 9:14Speaker 1: he couldn't seem to hold down a gig for long,
- 9:16Speaker 1: in fact, much longer than a few months at best.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And no surprise there with his what seemed to be
- 9:23Speaker 1: like ADHD bouncing back and forth. Right now, At some point,
- 9:26Speaker 1: Derek did cross paths with Jennifer Alfonso. Jennifer had her
- 9:30Speaker 1: own challenges growing up. She attended South Dade High for
- 9:34Speaker 1: a bit, but after having a baby girl as a teenager,
- 9:37Speaker 1: she ended up leaving school. Later, she managed to go
- 9:40Speaker 1: and earn her ged and by two thousand and nine
- 9:43Speaker 1: was working as a waitress at a Denny's over on
- 9:46Speaker 1: Bird Road near eighty seventh Avenue. That's where Derek came
- 9:50Speaker 1: into the picture. He was a regular at the restaurant
- 9:52Speaker 1: and the two hit it off. Derek was twenty six
- 9:55Speaker 1: at the time and Jennifer was twenty one, and it
- 9:58Speaker 1: didn't take long before the tour a officially a couple
- 10:01Speaker 1: after just a few months of dating. They got married
- 10:04Speaker 1: in January of twenty ten, just a couple months of
- 10:07Speaker 1: dating and they were officially tying that nongl They knew, Hey,
- 10:11Speaker 1: they knew now. At first, things looked pretty good. From
- 10:14Speaker 1: the outside. Derek, Jennifer and Jennifer's young daughter Isabella.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Played you know all. It was all just a big,
- 10:20Speaker 3: happy family.
- 10:21Speaker 1: It was a played out picture that we all see
- 10:23Speaker 1: in our heads, a cinematic thing, you know, a happily
- 10:25Speaker 1: ever after moment, and they made it all work. But
- 10:30Speaker 1: behind the scenes, the not so picture perfect was the reality.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Their relationship was rocky. To put it mildly. In fact,
- 10:38Speaker 1: there were fights, breakups, and Derek reportedly kicked Jennifer out
- 10:42Speaker 1: of the house more than once. One of her coworkers
- 10:45Speaker 1: even remembered her showing up to shifts with fresh bruises.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah. They ended up getting a divorce in February of
- 10:52Speaker 3: twenty twelve.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's like two years.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Two years later.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but that was hardly the end though. Just four
- 10:59Speaker 1: months after the divorce, they were back together and remarried
- 11:03Speaker 1: by April.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 11:05Speaker 1: By May, Jennifer had officially moved into Derek's two bedroom
- 11:08Speaker 1: townhouse in Southwest sixty seventh Avenue, a place Derek had
- 11:12Speaker 1: bought during their brief split up. Now at the time,
- 11:15Speaker 1: Jennifer seemed hopeful about their fresh start. In a journal
- 11:18Speaker 1: she was keeping, she wrote about moving in to what
- 11:20Speaker 1: she described as a beautiful new home. But she didn't
- 11:23Speaker 1: just write about the townhouse. She poured all kinds of
- 11:26Speaker 1: feelings about her up center downs in the relationship with
- 11:29Speaker 1: Derek into this journal.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Now, she gave this journal.
- 11:33Speaker 1: A pretty telling title, one that wasn't nearly as long
- 11:36Speaker 1: as many of Derek's books. In fact, it's a pretty
- 11:38Speaker 1: good title, The Mind of an Insane Woman. That's the
- 11:43Speaker 1: time book.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Just say.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I shouldn't have laughed at that, but it was just
- 11:46Speaker 2: that little dig at his book titles was good.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Sorry, I didn't even write that down. I just off
- 11:51Speaker 1: the cop was like, I gotta get this over now.
- 11:54Speaker 1: One passage summed up things pretty pretty clearly. In her journal,
- 11:58Speaker 1: she wrote quote, when we love each other, it's great.
- 12:02Speaker 1: But when we hate each other, we hate each other.
- 12:07Speaker 1: In another entry, she admitted on her own struggles with jealousy,
- 12:09Speaker 1: writing quote, I became uncontrollably jealous, like want to murder
- 12:15Speaker 1: type of deal.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Who Okay, Well, yeah, it definitely sounds like their relationship
- 12:20Speaker 2: is a wee bit on the rocky side.
- 12:22Speaker 3: It is.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I think it's almost like a magnet situation. When you
- 12:25Speaker 1: get the poles correct on a magnet. You know they attract,
- 12:28Speaker 1: but you flip those magnets around, all of a sudden
- 12:30Speaker 1: they're pushing apart. And I think it's just these poles
- 12:32Speaker 1: switching constantly and it's this push pull between the two
- 12:35Speaker 1: of them.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I also feel like passionate relationships are kind
- 12:39Speaker 2: of like that too, where it's like it's so good,
- 12:42Speaker 2: but then it can be so low too, Like, I
- 12:45Speaker 2: don't know, haven't you heard that about passionate relationships sometimes? Right? Definitely, Oh,
- 12:50Speaker 2: I don't know, it's kind of stressful though.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I mean like the other day when you made me cookies,
- 12:55Speaker 1: that was so good, but then when you made me
- 12:57Speaker 1: walk the dogs out, I was like, oh, I don't
- 13:00Speaker 1: want to, so I get you.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I made a batch of cookies and they didn't
- 13:04Speaker 2: even really last the night, so they were delicious.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Now, one thing Derek and Jennifer definitely had in common
- 13:11Speaker 1: was their fascination with all things weird, ghosts, the supernatural,
- 13:16Speaker 1: you name it. They'd even go ghost on ghost hunting
- 13:18Speaker 1: trips together, chasing down spooky stories and unexplained bump in
- 13:22Speaker 1: the night sort of situations. Jennifer wrote about some of
- 13:25Speaker 1: this stuff in her journal too, including her belief in
- 13:28Speaker 1: zombies and her anxiety about a possible zombie apocalypse. One day,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and when they moved into their southern Miami townhouse, Jennifer
- 13:35Speaker 1: became convinced that their place was haunted as well. Now,
- 13:38Speaker 1: they actually set up cameras inside their home, hoping to
- 13:41Speaker 1: catch some of this evidence of ghostly visitors and such,
- 13:44Speaker 1: but those cameras would later play a key role in
- 13:46Speaker 1: this story.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Now.
- 13:48Speaker 1: According to Jennifer's brother David Alfonso, a lot of these
- 13:51Speaker 1: interests were sparked or at least encouraged by Derek. David
- 13:55Speaker 1: had a few others who knew Derek, and they saw
- 13:57Speaker 1: him as a pretty pretty bizarre guy. He was always online,
- 14:01Speaker 1: constantly posting to social media, often sharing stuff that left
- 14:05Speaker 1: people kind of scratching their heads. Most people knew who
- 14:09Speaker 1: he was, but at the very least they also knew
- 14:12Speaker 1: he was an odd ball. But Derek, he wasn't just quirky.
- 14:16Speaker 1: There was a darker side to him too, one that
- 14:19Speaker 1: showed up in Jennifer's journal. She wrote about both of
- 14:23Speaker 1: their short tempers, but Derek's it could especially get nasty.
- 14:27Speaker 1: One time, they were at a concert in West Palm Beach,
- 14:30Speaker 1: the Mayhem Festival, which is apparently a metal music festival,
- 14:33Speaker 1: and some guy accidentally spilt a beer on Jennifer. Most
- 14:37Speaker 1: people would you brush it off, apologize or like, hey,
- 14:40Speaker 1: watch yourself, whatever, right, maybe even curse a little bit
- 14:43Speaker 1: and move on.
- 14:44Speaker 3: But not Derek. In this situation, he pulled a gun
- 14:48Speaker 3: on the guy.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Ooh, I can't. He probably shouldn't even have that gun
- 14:53Speaker 2: in there. No imagine their security, no kidding him, How
- 14:55Speaker 2: the hell did he get it in?
- 14:57Speaker 3: No idea, no.
- 14:58Speaker 1: One around them, no one in the park. Your group
- 15:00Speaker 1: of friends that went had any idea, idea that Derek
- 15:03Speaker 1: even had this guy who was carrying at the time,
- 15:05Speaker 1: So it completely shocked everyone.
- 15:06Speaker 2: No shit.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Now, luckily, no one got hurt and the situation didn't
- 15:10Speaker 1: spiral out of control, but it was a clear sign
- 15:13Speaker 1: Derek was always riding at that edge. Even with all
- 15:17Speaker 1: the drama, it seemed like Derek and Jennifer did have
- 15:19Speaker 1: love for each other, though they just couldn't keep things steady.
- 15:23Speaker 1: The relationship swung back and forth between passion and pure chaos.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Jennifer's friends were worried, and they had every right to be.
- 15:33Speaker 1: They tell her straight up, quote, we think Derek's crazy.
- 15:36Speaker 1: He might kill you one day, and I mean, Jennifer
- 15:39Speaker 1: just kind of laughed it off.
- 15:41Speaker 2: My goodness for a friend to be saying that, hey,
- 15:44Speaker 2: you don't feel like that would come easy.
- 15:47Speaker 3: No, definitely not.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And so that friend most likely was was thinking on
- 15:51Speaker 1: how to approach this accordingly right and clearly concerned for
- 15:55Speaker 1: Jennifer's safety, but she never really thought anything of it.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Now.
- 15:59Speaker 1: On the night of August seventh, twenty thirteen, Jennifer and
- 16:02Speaker 1: Derek were supposed to have a date night, but Derek
- 16:05Speaker 1: being Derek, he overslept and never bothered to wake up
- 16:08Speaker 1: his wife or.
- 16:09Speaker 3: His stepdaughter either.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Jennifer was furious, and the next morning the argument kicked
- 16:15Speaker 1: off almost as soon as they were both awake. In
- 16:19Speaker 1: the middle of their fight, Jennifer messaged her friend on Facebook.
- 16:22Speaker 1: She vented about Derek and how he was supposed to
- 16:24Speaker 1: wake her up the night before and how pissed she was.
- 16:27Speaker 1: She described the tension between them, the frustration, the resentment,
- 16:31Speaker 1: but there was no mention of anything getting physical at
- 16:34Speaker 1: that point. After a little back and forth, her and
- 16:37Speaker 1: her friend tried. Her friend sorry, tried to calm her down,
- 16:40Speaker 1: and Jennifer actually thanked them for helping her feel better.
- 16:44Speaker 1: That calm, though, didn't last long.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Later on that.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Morning, the fight escalated further. Jennifer started throwing whatever was
- 16:52Speaker 1: nearby at Derek. I mean, nothing dangerous, just random stuff
- 16:56Speaker 1: like mascaratubes, some boxes and towels. Now you want to
- 17:00Speaker 1: say throwing things that someone isn't exactly Okay, let's be honest,
- 17:04Speaker 1: let's be real. But these were hardly deadly weapons, right, so, yes,
- 17:10Speaker 1: that is physical violence. Don't be doing that, but also
- 17:13Speaker 1: don't escalate beyond that either, and Derek, well, he wasn't
- 17:16Speaker 1: having it. Instead of walking away or cooling off, he
- 17:19Speaker 1: stormed into the bedroom, opened up the closet, and grabbed
- 17:23Speaker 1: his gun. Oh okay, he came back gun in hand,
- 17:28Speaker 1: and things took a much darker turn. Now, what exactly
- 17:31Speaker 1: happened next depends a bit on who you ask and
- 17:34Speaker 1: what the I guess what side you are in the courtroom,
- 17:38Speaker 1: let's put it that way, but the general version goes
- 17:41Speaker 1: something like this. Derek pointed the gun at Jennifer and
- 17:45Speaker 1: threatened to shoot her if she didn't cut it out
- 17:47Speaker 1: and stopped throwing things at him. Now, Jennifer stopped, and
- 17:51Speaker 1: she told him she was done, that she was leaving
- 17:53Speaker 1: for good. She was done period.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Yeah, if your partner pulls a gun on you, yeah,
- 17:59Speaker 1: you probably should be done. I totally get that.
- 18:02Speaker 2: I get that too.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And she's like, I won't be here when you get
- 18:04Speaker 1: back home later. Now, after that, she had a downstairs
- 18:08Speaker 1: to the kitchen, probably gonna make breakfast for her ten
- 18:10Speaker 1: year old daughter, Isabella, who was still upstairs. Derek wasn't
- 18:14Speaker 1: done though, He put the gun away, but at around
- 18:17Speaker 1: ten am, the home surveillance camera caught parts of what
- 18:20Speaker 1: happened next. Derek went back into the bedroom, back to
- 18:24Speaker 1: the closet and pulled the gun out again. Then, instead
- 18:28Speaker 1: of staying, you know, right there, he followed Jennifer downstairs
- 18:32Speaker 1: into the kitchen, gun in hand, ready to pick a
- 18:34Speaker 1: fight again. What happens next comes straight from Derek's own
- 18:39Speaker 1: statement to police. According to him, Jennifer grabbed a knife
- 18:43Speaker 1: to defend herself.
- 18:46Speaker 3: That's a quote.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:48Speaker 1: So he comes down to the kitchen with a gun
- 18:50Speaker 1: pointed out her again and Jennifer grabs a knife to
- 18:54Speaker 1: defend herself, okay.
- 18:57Speaker 3: He claimed.
- 18:57Speaker 1: He managed to wrestle the knife away from her, and
- 19:00Speaker 1: that's when, according to Derek, she started hitting him in
- 19:03Speaker 1: the chest and in the arm, punching him. And then
- 19:08Speaker 1: Derek pulled the trigger.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And her daughter is literally upstairs or wherever is in
- 19:13Speaker 2: the home.
- 19:14Speaker 3: She's upstairs in the home. Yet.
- 19:16Speaker 1: The only problem though, when Derek pulled that trigger, he
- 19:19Speaker 1: pulled the trigger more than once. He emptied the entire
- 19:24Speaker 1: magazine into Jennifer, eight shots in total, leaving Jennifer with
- 19:31Speaker 1: twenty one entry and exit wounds, and by his own admission,
- 19:36Speaker 1: every single bullet hit its mark.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Holy I was not expecting that. Yeah, that is some
- 19:44Speaker 2: serious rage. Hey.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Minutes later, Derek stood over her body and snapped a photo.
- 19:52Speaker 2: What the shit is that?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Then, as if it was just another day, he went upstairs,
- 19:57Speaker 1: told his stepdaughter not to come down stairs.
- 20:01Speaker 3: He got dressed.
- 20:02Speaker 2: She's probably already fucking terrified.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Probably.
- 20:05Speaker 1: He walked to the front door, and before leaving, took
- 20:08Speaker 1: another last look at Jennifer's lifeless body laying in the
- 20:12Speaker 1: kitchen floor.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Oh, I'm just like left the home and left the home. Okay,
- 20:17Speaker 2: holy shit.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Now, at exactly eleven eleven am, Derek posted to his
- 20:23Speaker 1: Facebook page with the message that read, so this is
- 20:27Speaker 1: the following caption that accompanied that photo quote, I'm going
- 20:32Speaker 1: to prison or death sentence for killing my wife. Love
- 20:36Speaker 1: you guys, miss you guys. Take care of Facebook people.
- 20:41Speaker 1: You will see me in the news. My wife was
- 20:43Speaker 1: punching me and I'm not going to stand anymore with
- 20:46Speaker 1: the abuse. So I did what I did. I hope
- 20:49Speaker 1: you understand me.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I don't really think anyone can fully understand that they
- 20:56Speaker 2: should have just left each other like no, no, I mean,
- 20:58Speaker 2: it's so much easier than done.
- 21:01Speaker 3: For sure, It's way easier said than done.
- 21:04Speaker 2: But but he was done with it then just like leave.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I guess right, exactly, you don't have to kill someone.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah, put it that way.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Empty, Uh, all the bullets and a gun kill someone
- 21:18Speaker 2: right when the kid is upstairs?
- 21:19Speaker 3: Exactly. Now.
- 21:20Speaker 1: He even said she pulled the knife in defence. He
- 21:26Speaker 1: brought the gun to her first, he admits that.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so he yeah, he literally just like dug
- 21:34Speaker 2: himself a grave there.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:36Speaker 1: So, not only he wasn't trying to hide, he wasn't
- 21:38Speaker 1: trying to defend himself. He wasn't trying to get out
- 21:41Speaker 1: of a situation. He was following her and pursuing a
- 21:46Speaker 1: situation with a weapon in hand. That is the key
- 21:50Speaker 1: difference between someone in a toxic situation and can't get
- 21:54Speaker 1: out and him doing what he did.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Let's put it that way.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, she was clearly the one in the toxic situation.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I agree.
- 22:03Speaker 2: And also she must not have like, I don't I
- 22:07Speaker 2: bet anything. She didn't believe that he would actually pull
- 22:09Speaker 2: the trigger on her.
- 22:10Speaker 1: No, and I do think that. I mean, hey, I'm
- 22:14Speaker 1: not saying she wasn't toxic either, because she very well
- 22:17Speaker 1: could have been. I mean, clearly she was throwing stuff
- 22:21Speaker 1: at him right like that in itself.
- 22:22Speaker 2: That's not not totally innocent kind of thing.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Exactly, But it doesn't mean that any of this is okay,
- 22:29Speaker 1: you know, like you can't fucking pull a gun on
- 22:31Speaker 1: someone and chase them, which is exactly what he did.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Not innocent, but not deserving whatsoever.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Now, as if this wasn't horrifying enough, though, this caption
- 22:43Speaker 1: that he put on Facebook. The photo following was her,
- 22:47Speaker 1: her dead body sprawled on the floor, with the caption
- 22:51Speaker 1: rip Jennifer Alfonso.
- 22:53Speaker 2: What is he thinking now?
- 22:55Speaker 1: At the time, Derek worked as a front desk supervisor
- 22:58Speaker 1: at an apartment complex, and before turning himself in, he
- 23:01Speaker 1: actually called two of his coworkers to let them know
- 23:04Speaker 1: he wouldn't be coming in the reason, of course, you
- 23:06Speaker 1: know we as we know he told them because you know,
- 23:09Speaker 1: he just shot and killed his wife.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Can you imagine getting that call? Yeah, I don't think
- 23:16Speaker 2: I would believe.
- 23:16Speaker 3: It, I know.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Shortly after, Derek and his father walked into South Miami
- 23:21Speaker 1: Police station, where Derek turned himself into authorities.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Just like that, Just like that.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Officers of course rushed to the townhouse to the scene
- 23:35Speaker 1: where the murder took place, and there they found Jennifer's
- 23:38Speaker 1: body right where Derek had left her. And even worse,
- 23:41Speaker 1: her ten year old daughter was still upstairs in the
- 23:44Speaker 1: home alone with her mother.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Murdered, and she didn't know she like stayed upstairs. I'm
- 23:49Speaker 2: imagining or who knows.
- 23:52Speaker 3: I'm unaware. I couldn't really find much detail on the
- 23:55Speaker 3: daughter and her situation.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Oh that's so sad.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Now.
- 23:59Speaker 1: During Derek's entar, detectives asked him about any injuries he
- 24:03Speaker 1: might have gotten during the so called fight with Jennifer.
- 24:06Speaker 1: He talked about bruises, said his temple was in serious pain,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and even claimed he was worried she might have hit
- 24:11Speaker 1: him hard enough to cause life threatening damage. Cops weren't
- 24:16Speaker 1: buying it. No fair enough, especially when Derek claims his
- 24:23Speaker 1: twenty five and oh professional, Well, I guess amateur boxing.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Record, right, Okay, I forgot about that. She wouldn't have
- 24:34Speaker 2: stood his change against him?
- 24:36Speaker 1: He No, she shouldn't have. Yeah, theoretically she shouldn't have.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Jennifer was smaller, not as strong as Derek would have been,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and definitely would not have been a match for him
- 24:48Speaker 1: physically if he was a trained boxer. Now I have
- 24:52Speaker 1: found some other stuff regarding Derek and his fighting abilities. Reportedly,
- 24:57Speaker 1: he walked into a martial arts studio at one time.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I believe it was a mixed martial arts studio claiming
- 25:03Speaker 1: to have you know, some like martial arts skills and
- 25:05Speaker 1: stuff and was like training for the day or something.
- 25:07Speaker 1: And the guy heading the gym, I don't know if
- 25:10Speaker 1: you want to call him a sense a trainer, whatever
- 25:12Speaker 1: he was, I'm not not exactly sure, but so we'll
- 25:14Speaker 1: just say the guy heading the gym, he went out
- 25:17Speaker 1: to give some pointers to Derek, like, you know, like
- 25:19Speaker 1: your techniques a little bit sloppy, you don't do this this.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Derek was pissed and challenged the guy to a fight.
- 25:27Speaker 1: The guy kicked his ass and kicked him out of
- 25:29Speaker 1: the gym.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Wow, this just sounds like a complete idiot.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Hey, he really is. So I personally have very serious
- 25:40Speaker 1: doubt about his training as a boxer. I'm sure maybe
- 25:44Speaker 1: he's gone to a boxing gym, taking some boxing classes,
- 25:46Speaker 1: even for a couple of years, but I don't imagine
- 25:48Speaker 1: it's very extensive, right, let's put it that way. Still, though,
- 25:53Speaker 1: that can come in handy in a fight, one, especially
- 25:57Speaker 1: against a smaller opponent like Jennifer or would have been.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So this idea that she was some kind of serious
- 26:05Speaker 1: threat to him in a physical alter physical altercation did
- 26:09Speaker 1: not add up to police. And if he was so
- 26:11Speaker 1: concerned about his life, why didn't he call nine on
- 26:14Speaker 1: one right.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Away or go to the hospital or something exactly.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Now, when they asked him this, you know, why didn't
- 26:19Speaker 1: you call nine one one, his response was, quote, because
- 26:23Speaker 1: I figured we had to solve it on our end, basically,
- 26:28Speaker 1: in other words, no cops, no outside help, just him
- 26:30Speaker 1: handling like that.
- 26:32Speaker 2: They had to handle, oh, like him and his wife.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Yes, they had to solve it on their own.
- 26:36Speaker 2: And so him solving and is murdering her apparently. Gosh, yeah,
- 26:42Speaker 2: I mean, this is just so much like other stories
- 26:44Speaker 2: you hear too.
- 26:45Speaker 1: It's just brutal, it is, and it's so fucking sad
- 26:48Speaker 1: that people getting these situations with the toxic individual like.
- 26:52Speaker 3: That, and it's there's no escape.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Now, Derek was arrested and charged with first degree murder,
- 26:59Speaker 1: and when it came time for his trial, things got
- 27:01Speaker 1: a little weird. As if Derek wasn't weird enough, during
- 27:05Speaker 1: one of one of the hearings, he actually had to
- 27:08Speaker 1: be removed from the courtroom after multiple outbursts, and by
- 27:12Speaker 1: then he was sporting a full on Charles Manson look, long,
- 27:16Speaker 1: scraggly haired wild beard, the whole thing, and at one
- 27:20Speaker 1: point he even got kicked. He got himself kicked out,
- 27:23Speaker 1: like entirely when he started yelling his testimony at the judge,
- 27:26Speaker 1: completely unprompted.
- 27:27Speaker 3: The judge is just.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Like stop it, stop it, like shut up, I'm going
- 27:31Speaker 1: to remove you. Andy.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Derek didn't carry He just keeps fucking going.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Well, really disrespectful. Exactly is he trying to make it
- 27:39Speaker 2: seem like he has mental health or issues of sorts.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I think he definitely does have mental health issues of
- 27:44Speaker 1: sorts that way.
- 27:46Speaker 2: In the way that you're not going to get, you know,
- 27:49Speaker 2: convicted to the full extent.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Or he very well might have been. That might have
- 27:53Speaker 1: been a ploy he was trying to put into play.
- 27:57Speaker 1: But he just made himself look like an idiot, let's
- 27:59Speaker 1: put that way. So the defense tried to paint Derek
- 28:02Speaker 1: as a victim in the situation, the poor battered husband
- 28:05Speaker 1: pushed to the edge by an abusive, violent wife. According
- 28:08Speaker 1: to them, Jennifer was the aggressor, both physically and emotionally.
- 28:12Speaker 1: They claimed she would torment him, insult him, and even
- 28:15Speaker 1: mock him by calling him quote the woman in the relationship. Eventually,
- 28:19Speaker 1: they said, Derek just snapped. Now, I'm not a lawyer,
- 28:26Speaker 1: let's put it that way. I'm definitely not a lawyer.
- 28:28Speaker 1: But when you shoot your spouse eight times then post
- 28:31Speaker 1: pictures their body on Facebook, that's not exactly the strongest
- 28:35Speaker 1: self defense claim I've ever heard.
- 28:37Speaker 2: No, I mean, I guess they had to come up
- 28:39Speaker 2: with something too.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Che So it really was, though, those Facebook posts that
- 28:47Speaker 1: took this from a tragic domestic incident to something far
- 28:51Speaker 1: darker and far more public, because it was completely unnecessary
- 28:54Speaker 1: to do something like that. Critics called it the ultimate
- 28:58Speaker 1: symptom of a society obsessed with social media fame, and
- 29:02Speaker 1: as we know, Derek very much so was pursuing that
- 29:05Speaker 1: that fame.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:07Speaker 2: He wanted his name to be known and.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Remembered exactly, so he did two posts to Facebook. I
- 29:12Speaker 1: believe I kind of like mixed it up a little
- 29:14Speaker 1: bit when I originally said it. I said he'd put
- 29:16Speaker 1: the first post with the picture. Yeah, it was the
- 29:19Speaker 1: first post where he did that big like I killed
- 29:21Speaker 1: my wife, Okay, and then it was a picture with
- 29:23Speaker 1: the rip.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Oh, so like the first post didn't have a picture.
- 29:28Speaker 1: No, so that's that's my mistake from earlier. The first
- 29:30Speaker 1: post didn't have a picture. Then he posted the picture
- 29:32Speaker 1: with the caption rip.
- 29:33Speaker 2: It's still completely fucked up because loved ones and friends
- 29:37Speaker 2: and stuff are learning about this through that. Exactly, you're
- 29:43Speaker 2: opening your Facebook to that.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Well, and I don't know if I've actually wrote it
- 29:48Speaker 1: in the script. I don't think I did. The reason
- 29:50Speaker 1: why he claims he did post to oh, I do
- 29:54Speaker 1: have it here, it's like the next sentence. The reason
- 29:55Speaker 1: why he claimed he was posting those photos to Facebook
- 29:58Speaker 1: was his way of notifying Jennifer's family about her death.
- 30:01Speaker 3: That's what he claimed it was. And I'm sure they
- 30:04Speaker 3: appreciated that thoughtful gesture.
- 30:06Speaker 2: That's terrible, but asked.
- 30:08Speaker 1: After posting, what was his next next step? Calling into
- 30:13Speaker 1: work was an interesting He called two co workers, two
- 30:17Speaker 1: coworkers to tell them, yeah, I killed my wife from
- 30:19Speaker 1: not coming into work.
- 30:20Speaker 2: So he was I feel like he was enjoying these
- 30:23Speaker 2: reactions right one hundred percent. YEA.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Now, when he turned himself into authorities, he was accompanied
- 30:29Speaker 1: by his father as well, which means he went and
- 30:31Speaker 1: got another person roped into this story. He's enjoying the
- 30:34Speaker 1: attention one hundred and ten percent.
- 30:37Speaker 2: That is so messed up to be enjoying that sort
- 30:40Speaker 2: of attention.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so I full heartedly agree with these critics calling
- 30:45Speaker 1: it the ultimate symptom of a society obsessed with social
- 30:47Speaker 1: media fame, because that's exactly what he was chasing. So
- 30:51Speaker 1: the prosecution, on the other hand, had a much simpler theory.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Derek's ego couldn't handle losing. When Jennifer threatened to leave him,
- 30:59Speaker 1: it was too much for him to take. He reacted
- 31:01Speaker 1: the way fighters do by trying to win at all costs.
- 31:06Speaker 1: And I don't exactly think i'd call Derek much of
- 31:08Speaker 1: a fighter, more of just an aggressor.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:12Speaker 1: So, once he quote unquote one he had, he had,
- 31:17Speaker 1: he had what he had wanted right to make sure
- 31:20Speaker 1: that the whole world knew, and that's what he pursued.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Just like, I'm just sitting here and I can't stop
- 31:28Speaker 2: just thinking that he's a complete selfish asshole. The fact
- 31:31Speaker 2: that he did this, posted it to Facebook, that there's
- 31:35Speaker 2: like the little girl upstairs, It's just I don't know, well,
- 31:39Speaker 2: he is he is only thinking about himself and like
- 31:42Speaker 2: just the people that he is also, well, he's murdered
- 31:46Speaker 2: one and then just hurting just so many other people.
- 31:49Speaker 3: He's impacting so many people.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Yeah, And speaking of Jennifer's daughter, like Isabelle, when she
- 31:54Speaker 1: was like, because she's you know, interviewed with this whole
- 31:56Speaker 1: court process, right when she's asked if there's anyone she
- 31:59Speaker 1: was scared of. Want what her answer was him, quote,
- 32:03Speaker 1: the only person I was afraid of was Derek because
- 32:05Speaker 1: he was mean to mommy.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Oh no, this is like a little ten year old girl.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Yeah. After six hours of deliberation, the jury found Derek
- 32:17Speaker 1: guilty of second degree murder.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Okay, I kind of wondered because I thought first degree.
- 32:23Speaker 2: He didn't go about, you know, really planning it thoroughly.
- 32:27Speaker 2: It seemed like it was kind of a little bit
- 32:29Speaker 2: in the heat of the moment as well.
- 32:30Speaker 1: But three months later, at the sentencing, Derek made it
- 32:33Speaker 1: clear he wasn't going down quietly. He stood up, addressed
- 32:38Speaker 1: the courtroom and he ranted and rambled, threatening to quote
- 32:41Speaker 1: get his lawyers involved.
- 32:44Speaker 2: For what.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Sentence he started.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Calling out, I mean this it was a weird like
- 32:50Speaker 1: rant that he made in the courtroom, he started calling
- 32:52Speaker 1: out the President of the United States, babbling about how
- 32:55Speaker 1: a movie that came out before his trial somehow made
- 32:58Speaker 1: this whole thing unfair, and for the record, the movie
- 33:01Speaker 1: had absolutely nothing to do with his case. He announced
- 33:04Speaker 1: that he was going to sue the court.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Okay, checks out.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Yeah, all these things that he's going on about confused
- 33:13Speaker 1: so many people.
- 33:14Speaker 3: It had nothing to do with the case.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Like he's just talking about how Barack Obama and people
- 33:18Speaker 1: are so corrupt and he's got to do something about it.
- 33:20Speaker 3: What the Okay, I agree with you.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I think he's trying to make himself look a certain
- 33:26Speaker 1: way to the courtroom, to the jury, to the public, or.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Just prolong his like moment in spot the Spotlight potentially
- 33:34Speaker 2: right by, like I don't know, having this big today
- 33:38Speaker 2: and people listen to the shit that I have to say.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And I think he's just searching for notoriety. He's trying
- 33:45Speaker 1: to get people to talk about his story. I mean,
- 33:47Speaker 1: we're doing it right now. But I think he's trying
- 33:50Speaker 1: to be all like very Marilyn Manson esque, you know,
- 33:53Speaker 1: like he was this crazy guy and like, oh my god,
- 33:57Speaker 1: massive Headliners. No Derek you're just a fucking loser, and
- 34:03Speaker 1: it baffles us how you can be such a douche canoe.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, there's nothing like that makes him. I
- 34:14Speaker 2: mean sometimes the serial killers do get like that attention.
- 34:19Speaker 2: They've killed like numerous people and they go about it
- 34:22Speaker 2: so many in so many different ways and stuff. But
- 34:24Speaker 2: he is literally just an abuser. Yeah, and he took
- 34:28Speaker 2: like his wife's life. I don't know, that is just
- 34:32Speaker 2: there's nothing really there to talk about it. Like, he's
- 34:35Speaker 2: just a complete idiot.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Now he was sentenced to life in prison, with the
- 34:40Speaker 1: possibility of parole after twenty five years. He appealed, of course,
- 34:44Speaker 1: but his conviction was upheld. Once all of this hit
- 34:49Speaker 1: the public, people quickly discovered Derek's whole side career as
- 34:54Speaker 1: a self published author.
- 34:56Speaker 3: And as the Internet does what the Internet does.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Do Seriously, they're not becoming popular, are they?
- 35:02Speaker 3: Nope?
- 35:03Speaker 1: Nope, tru Okay, the internet went and they did Internet things,
- 35:08Speaker 1: because before long, Amazon was flooded with sarcastic reviews of
- 35:12Speaker 1: his books. Some of the highlights include great book, the
- 35:17Speaker 1: author really sticks to his guns, Oh fantastic book, gave
- 35:22Speaker 1: my marriage a shot in the arm, Oh boy, I
- 35:25Speaker 1: had my doubts about reading this, but I finally decided
- 35:28Speaker 1: to pull the trigger.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Okay, so yeah, yeah, the internet really did go and
- 35:35Speaker 2: do a thing.
- 35:36Speaker 1: There, Yes they did. Now his books have bad, terrible reviews.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Apparently they are just absolutely horrendous, with Barnes and Noble
- 35:46Speaker 1: having him like super low, like like it was in
- 35:49Speaker 1: like the tens of thousands on the bottom list of
- 35:51Speaker 1: like best sellers. It's like when you're like number one
- 35:53Speaker 1: best seller. Yeah, this was like thirteen thousand best sellers
- 35:57Speaker 1: like bottom.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Ye. You probably just have to read the Tide to
- 36:00Speaker 2: like place it that way.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Probably, right, Even if you look at the books, it
- 36:06Speaker 1: looks like an elementary school project.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:12Speaker 1: So even in prison, Derek, he became exactly what he
- 36:16Speaker 1: always wanted famous, just not for the reasons he hoped.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Oh okay, Like, are you saying like the inmates had
- 36:26Speaker 2: attention on him?
- 36:27Speaker 1: No, I'm saying because the reviews on Amazon and the
- 36:30Speaker 1: mockery the story that we're telling right now.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Because sometimes like people when they go into prison and
- 36:36Speaker 2: if they have you know, abuse, like a woman or
- 36:39Speaker 2: a child, they don't do very good in there. That's
- 36:41Speaker 2: what I kind of was thinking. You meant, I have.
- 36:44Speaker 1: No idea how he's doing behind bars, and I hope
- 36:47Speaker 1: that he is, let's say, feeling some retribution. That's how
- 36:53Speaker 1: I hope he's doing behind bars. And yeah, that's the
- 36:57Speaker 1: story of the Facebook Killer.
- 36:59Speaker 2: And he's still there.
- 37:00Speaker 3: He's still there.
- 37:01Speaker 2: When did he get sentenced? Sorry, because I'm just curious
- 37:05Speaker 2: how long he's going to be in there, because that's
- 37:07Speaker 2: so again I hate when they're just of an age
- 37:10Speaker 2: where they'll get back out and and he'll probably use
- 37:15Speaker 2: his time in there to carry on his you know,
- 37:18Speaker 2: wanting to be famous and stuff.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Yeah, but I don't think he will.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I believe he was sentenced in twenty sixteen, of February
- 37:27Speaker 1: twenty sixteen, so he's got.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Some time, he does. He's been in there nine years though,
- 37:32Speaker 2: that's crazy. Yeah, doesn't feel like twenty sixteen was nine
- 37:36Speaker 2: years ago.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Holy shit, thanks for just giving me that slap in
- 37:42Speaker 1: the face of reality.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Appreciate that one there anytime. It's my job.
- 37:48Speaker 3: Wow.
- 37:50Speaker 2: So what was his like title again? Facebook?
- 37:54Speaker 3: The Facebook Killer?
- 37:55Speaker 2: Okay, the Facebook Killer?
- 37:57Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I know you're talking about like the title
- 37:59Speaker 1: of the book Boks, which honesty. Like, no, I can't
- 38:02Speaker 1: get over some of these book titles like where are
- 38:06Speaker 1: they here? How I Saved Someone's life, on Marriage, on
- 38:11Speaker 1: family Problems, True Communication, Attention, World, save yourself? And if
- 38:14Speaker 1: the world ended today, how would you react to saving
- 38:17Speaker 1: the world or helping the world or would it be
- 38:19Speaker 1: all over for you? I could barely do that in
- 38:21Speaker 1: one breath.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Is there any comma? Is there anything?
- 38:24Speaker 3: Or it's just like I mean, yeah, there's some commas
- 38:27Speaker 3: in there.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Okay, but still that is unreal. People wouldn't even have
- 38:32Speaker 2: because you know how they they assist. The people have systems,
- 38:35Speaker 2: like bookstores have systems. They probably wouldn't even fit the
- 38:38Speaker 2: fucking title into the system of you know, where you
- 38:41Speaker 2: put a title of a book.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Could you imagine going into a bookstore and requesting said title.
- 38:46Speaker 2: I think the person would think that you were, I
- 38:49Speaker 2: don't know, a little bit.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Cuckoo or something.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I think so now, to be fair, I do believe
- 38:53Speaker 1: that these books. I don't know if there's hard copies
- 38:55Speaker 1: of the books. I think they're all in digital form.
- 38:58Speaker 1: M okay, but even still, could you imagine like recommending
- 39:03Speaker 1: this book to a friend, Oh, you should check this out.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Here's a notebook that I wrote down the title of
- 39:08Speaker 1: the book and it covers the next four pages.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Yeah, well, here's still hoping that. Honestly, his time away
- 39:16Speaker 2: is spent reflecting really on what the fuck he does
- 39:19Speaker 2: he's done, And I also just feel so bad for
- 39:22Speaker 2: that kid, Like her daughter just lost her mom. Yeah,
- 39:28Speaker 2: that's not okay. That like that is not okay to
- 39:32Speaker 2: have an issue with someone like that and your relationship
- 39:36Speaker 2: is so fucked up, and then you take her life
- 39:38Speaker 2: and no regards for the fact that she's a mom, Like,
- 39:42Speaker 2: oh man, that makes me angry.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Well, he clearly had no regards for anyone because he's
- 39:46Speaker 1: so drawn into getting the attention himself. Look at how
- 39:49Speaker 1: many people he threw the murdered image in front of,
- 39:54Speaker 1: like her lifeless body body. He threw it on a
- 39:56Speaker 1: public media forum where there's children foundly with your grandparents.
- 40:01Speaker 3: You know.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I just had the thought, like I wonder if he
- 40:04Speaker 2: had thought about that, because would you kill someone and
- 40:09Speaker 2: then later just have that idea or is it something
- 40:13Speaker 2: that you would have been, like, had thought about previously.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I don't think he would have thought about it prior
- 40:19Speaker 1: to I think he just posted so often and was.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Just like about his day and stuff that it just
- 40:25Speaker 2: kind of felt natural.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Maybe yeah, he's just like, oh this is post worthy?
- 40:31Speaker 1: Why just fucking twisted to even think if that someone's
- 40:34Speaker 1: going to say this is postworthy. But I do think
- 40:36Speaker 1: that that's what goes on in his head because he
- 40:38Speaker 1: was so much like, I'm going to post things about
- 40:41Speaker 1: my day or stuff that I do, and I'm going
- 40:43Speaker 1: to get famous. You know, Like there's kids out there
- 40:45Speaker 1: who are like, oh, I'm going to do YouTube and
- 40:47Speaker 1: become YouTube famous, right, and they post the cool things
- 40:50Speaker 1: about their summer and their day. And I think that's
- 40:53Speaker 1: just what it was for him. He's just posting, you know,
- 40:55Speaker 1: a big thing that happened to him. I can get
- 40:56Speaker 1: YouTube famous off this. Yeah, look at the Logan policy
- 41:00Speaker 1: situation back in the day when he was off in
- 41:01Speaker 1: the Japanese forest and posted a video on YouTube when
- 41:05Speaker 1: he found someone who committed suicide.
- 41:09Speaker 2: But that actually did well for him, didn't it in
- 41:12Speaker 2: the end in the long run.
- 41:14Speaker 3: I don't know if it did.
- 41:15Speaker 2: No, No, it didn't help him in any way.
- 41:18Speaker 3: No, Okay, I don't think it did.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I know I remember that. That's just like disgusting. I
- 41:23Speaker 2: actually just came across something. It was like today or
- 41:26Speaker 2: yesterday about just people. You know, it's kind of a
- 41:30Speaker 2: known fact that a lot of times people who post
- 41:32Speaker 2: a lot about how great their life is or their
- 41:35Speaker 2: relationship is that they're doing that and they're kind of
- 41:38Speaker 2: like overcompensating. Oh yeah, right, and in reality it isn't great.
- 41:43Speaker 2: I'm sure there's some instances where there they do actually
- 41:46Speaker 2: have a good relationship or whatever. But yeah, social media
- 41:51Speaker 2: is just I don't know, I used to like social
- 41:53Speaker 2: media a lot more than I do now because I
- 41:57Speaker 2: so want It's just not real.
- 41:59Speaker 3: It's really not. For the majority of it.
- 42:00Speaker 2: It's not real, and it honestly kind of just makes
- 42:02Speaker 2: you feel like shit most of the time.
- 42:04Speaker 1: True, which, in all honesty is one of the big
- 42:06Speaker 1: reasons that our podcast is the way that it is
- 42:09Speaker 1: because we try and keep our stuff as real as
- 42:11Speaker 1: we can. We don't really edit stuff out. I mean
- 42:14Speaker 1: there's minor edits here and there once in a while,
- 42:16Speaker 1: but I mean, majority of it it's just us shooting
- 42:18Speaker 1: the ship, talking about a story, having a drink, and
- 42:20Speaker 1: being us keeping you know, the reality to our posts.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, which I mean, yeah, it's getting more and more.
- 42:30Speaker 2: This world is just not like that anymore.
- 42:32Speaker 1: No, so if you want to see more of it,
- 42:34Speaker 1: stick around form.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Wow, what a pitch at the end that wasn't even plun.
- 42:39Speaker 1: More social media is in the description of this podcast.
- 42:42Speaker 2: In case you're lacking in those.
- 42:45Speaker 3: But yeah, thank you for being here, Derek. You suck
- 42:50Speaker 3: and we'll talk to you next episode.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, we're about to go and record.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Our Patreon exclusive.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know, if you want to be a patron,
- 42:59Speaker 2: now would be time because you get at the end
- 43:01Speaker 2: of the month elusive.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Episode exactly, and there's a whole library you can go
- 43:05Speaker 1: back and listen to a whole wack load more too,
- 43:07Speaker 1: whole wackload. It's a whole whack load. You gotta get
- 43:09Speaker 1: the quack in there, the wack load, a whole wack load.
- 43:15Speaker 2: So if you're not gonna go and tune into that
- 43:18Speaker 2: one until next time, stay wicked.
