Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Sweet 16 thoughts for Iowa & Iowa State, Bill Seals talks Cyclones, Bill Bender talks March Madness
Transcript
- 0:00All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:03Wednesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network,
- 0:05Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours talking
- 0:08sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:10afternoon here with us. We'll take you till 2 off the
- 0:13bench, 21 till 5. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:16program. Our #1 going to have a couple of
- 0:18bills, Bill Seals, who is in the car headed to Chicago, the out
- 0:23of state men's team scheduled I think to take off right about
- 0:26now from Ames. As they head over.
- 0:28They're going to get to Chicago, get to the team hotel, have a
- 0:31little grub, a little a team meeting once they get there.
- 0:34And then apparently, TJ and a couple of players will be made
- 0:39available. A good chance the Jefferson
- 0:42question comes up very early whenever that media opportunity
- 0:47avails itself. I doubt we'll hear from
- 0:49Jefferson or the media will hear from Jefferson today.
- 0:51But TJ will speak to the media at the team hotel roughly 3
- 0:55o'clock today. So if you're looking for some
- 0:58news, if anything, that may come out on Justin Jefferson, that'll
- 1:02be around that time. So Bill Seals will join us.
- 1:05Obviously, we'll talk about the Iowa State women's program.
- 1:08They lost another player to the transfer portal today.
- 1:11Today a freshman didn't play a whole lot was I don't know if
- 1:14she was injured in place since the end of January.
- 1:17As I looked back at their at their at at her game slate, if
- 1:22you will, from from the season Freya Jensen.
- 1:26She's entered the portal, but now with Addie Brown.
- 1:29And by the way, you see Addie Brown's do not contact.
- 1:32Really. Yes, that's all.
- 1:34She went into the portal, which means she's already got her next
- 1:37home when you see that little tagline attached to it.
- 1:40But there's no tampering in college athletes.
- 1:42Didn't you know this? I did know that, which was kind
- 1:45of surprising when I saw that. Don't know where she'll be
- 1:48going. I know there's a lot of Hawkeye
- 1:50fans love to have her. Yes, absolutely.
- 1:52Not sure if that's in the cards or not.
- 1:54She's from, I looked, I didn't know Kansas.
- 1:58I mean, closer to home, who knows where she's going, but we
- 2:00know that she is going. Texas.
- 2:03She'll have her opportunities. There's she's going to have her
- 2:07choice. Yeah, she's going to have.
- 2:09Well, she could have apparently she's made her choice, right,
- 2:12because the the do not contact goes with it.
- 2:15So we'll see where that happens. Obviously the, the shoe that may
- 2:18or may not drop and, and, and if it does, and that is the and,
- 2:22and no offense to anybody else on the roster, but if Audie
- 2:25Crooks decides or, and, and I would assume she'll, she just
- 2:29wouldn't stay and say nothing, right?
- 2:32I mean, she would come out and say no, I've decided to stay,
- 2:35which I don't anticipate is going to happen, but we'll see
- 2:37where it goes. But when that happens, what what
- 2:41does that mean as far as the head coach, Bill Fenley, who's
- 2:44been there a long, long time, 30 plus years?
- 2:47And you talk about leaving money on the board, she's obviously
- 2:50doing very well as we've seen commercialized, but this is a
- 2:55nationally relevant player. She is offensively as well
- 2:59known. Is anybody in women's college
- 3:01basketball? Yes, You know why the national
- 3:04media gravitated towards her? Portnoy McAfee.
- 3:09You know when Portnoy was doing the the the football game of
- 3:12names for for Fox, he ran down Audie Crooks.
- 3:17McAfee loves a lot of national media loves Audie Crooks.
- 3:20So yeah, she's very well known of anybody on that team.
- 3:23Absolutely, and there's a a wide range of people that another one
- 3:28and you imagine her playing in a system like at a South Carolina
- 3:32and Don Staley getting the best out of her, not just
- 3:34offensively, but on the defensive end of the floor and
- 3:37and there's there's so many layers to it.
- 3:38It's a tough spot. So what are we going to hear?
- 3:41Something from the Iowa State when it's basketball side or do?
- 3:44You wait till after the men are finished playing or after they
- 3:46get good this weekend. Right.
- 3:49You almost have to, right? At least.
- 3:51Don't want to step on their toes.
- 3:52I mean, they're in the Sweet 16, potentially Elite 8 this
- 3:55weekend. Absolutely.
- 3:57Playing for the first time, right, For Final Four since
- 3:591944, when it wasn't even the Final Four, right.
- 4:02Just there's four teams left. Yeah, these teams are playing.
- 4:04That's not what it was dubbed at that time.
- 4:06Wonder who came up with that and did they trademark it?
- 4:09And if they didn't, shame on you, yes.
- 4:11Or if that was even a well. The NCAA's got a trademark.
- 4:14Now. Well, they do, absolutely.
- 4:15Sweet 16 and Elite 8. Yeah, we heard, as we heard
- 4:18first hand, we've saw, we found out DraftKings, they sued
- 4:21DraftKings are are there, was it cease and desist or did they
- 4:24file suit? Anyway, it happened over the
- 4:25weekend, Thursday or Friday. Everything that happened in
- 4:28those days gets. I mean, it's just lost.
- 4:31Right. Yeah.
- 4:32Here's one The NFL starts on Wednesday night.
- 4:35Were you aware there's no well, there is a Thursday game.
- 4:39So that opening week, when the Super Bowl champ, the curtain
- 4:41goes up on the NFL season. That's Wednesday this year,
- 4:45which there's no Friday game. Right was out there for a while,
- 4:50but. Made official, Seattle will host
- 4:53to be determined on Wednesday night.
- 4:55Thursday night, the Rams and the Niners collide in Australia.
- 5:00Remember, we were trying to shoehorn that game into the
- 5:02schedule. Absolutely.
- 5:03But just point being is with with the tournaments going on,
- 5:06whether it be the conference, everything kind of took a back
- 5:10seat, including the NFL, which seldom happens.
- 5:12Do you have any idea what the time difference is in Australia?
- 5:17Oh no, it's got to be 12 hours plus.
- 5:19Because, all right, what time is it in?
- 5:21Because it's in Melbourne. Right, Melbourne.
- 5:22Yes, they're playing at the home of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
- 5:25So it is currently 4 O 6:00 AM Thursday there.
- 5:32So if that game kicks on, we'll do the math here.
- 5:34So Fast forward 7. So that'll be like an 11 AM kick
- 5:38off time in Melbourne for them Friday, which would because we
- 5:44go, it'd still be a Thursday, it'd be Thursday morning for.
- 5:47No. No, it'd be yeah, Friday
- 5:49morning. What?
- 5:50Oh, today's Wednesday. So it's Thursday, they are
- 5:53currently just turned into Thursday.
- 5:56So yes, we Fast forward 7 hour, it'll still be the same day.
- 5:59No, it'll be the day before. No, it's the day after.
- 6:02Good God, it'll be an 11 AM kick off the.
- 6:07In Australia locally for 7:00 for seven.
- 6:09O'clock Central, I'll kick off for that Thursday game.
- 6:13Day 2 TBD, at least of these two knuckleheads.
- 6:16Oh boy, from noon to two. But yeah, we got Wednesday
- 6:20football, Thursday football, nothing on Friday.
- 6:22Brazil's had it the last couple of years and.
- 6:25They'll be college game games I'm sure on Friday though.
- 6:27Do you think they would? Oh, absolutely.
- 6:29Yeah, why wouldn't they? Yes, yeah.
- 6:30For the Carl's game. Well, anyways, as we inch our
- 6:33way closer to the tweet 16, which gets underway tomorrow
- 6:37night, by the way, Bobby Hanson's going to join Trenton
- 6:40High tomorrow. Look forward to catching up with
- 6:42Bobby Hanson. And yes, and we've had calls
- 6:45during the break last couple of days.
- 6:48You could be able to get Sip Sip coming on this week.
- 6:50Oh, Sip's coming on. You'll be here tomorrow at 1:30.
- 6:53I'm excited for that because I was calling basketball when
- 6:56Siple joined last after his idiotic comments, so we'll see.
- 7:01Yeah, it'll be. It'll be fine.
- 7:02I'm not sure they were there for the the first weekend of his
- 7:06radio station and and his the website has everybody there
- 7:09every Nebraska, like the whole state was there.
- 7:13So we'll see where that goes. So I did a crossover last night
- 7:17on the podcast with Mitch Sherman, who we've had on a
- 7:19radio show a ton. He does the very good guy locked
- 7:21on Cornhuskers side of things. And him and and we had Doc
- 7:24yesterday and and Sherman and Doctor collaborating, yes,
- 7:27something. And they have a column come
- 7:29together on the Iowa, Nebraska angle of things too leading into
- 7:32the game. And we're trying to figure out
- 7:35what's it going to look like in the building, say 18,000 is the
- 7:38building and kind of the breakdown of population number
- 7:40of fans that get there. Now.
- 7:42I think Iowa is going to be decidedly 4th.
- 7:44I don't think there's any way that they surpass certainly
- 7:48Houston. Being at home, it's you can walk
- 7:50from their campus to the building.
- 7:53You have that component. Nebraska that got the jump, the
- 7:56way they traveled and they haven't had to pay for bowl
- 7:58games once in the last two decades.
- 8:00Been a while. They saved up a lot of money.
- 8:02And if you're a basketball fan, you've been saving your whole
- 8:04life. Exactly.
- 8:05There hasn't been anything you've had to worry about there.
- 8:07Illinois this is what they travel for is their basketball
- 8:10program, although. I think football's cutting into
- 8:14that a. Little bit, but still I.
- 8:15Mean. No, I agree.
- 8:16I agree. Yeah.
- 8:17It's a basketball school. But but more so Illinois
- 8:20football getting getting on the map with Bill.
- 8:22But yes, I agree with your point how wholeheartedly.
- 8:24And they've always travelled well for basketball, so they're
- 8:26going to have a good contingency so as.
- 8:27Carver knew first hand. Yes, back in the day.
- 8:30Absolutely with the Orange crush covered in multiple times and
- 8:33take it over. I broke it down like 9000
- 8:37Houston. Out of 18,000.
- 8:40Out of 18,000 and maybe that's low 9000.
- 8:44Boy, oh boy, I don't know. Maybe 3500 each for Nebraska and
- 8:50for Illinois and like 1500 for Iowa.
- 8:52You think Illinois fans will be on par with Nebraska?
- 8:55See, I think Nebraska will be clearly #2 as far as do you?
- 8:58I do, just like you said. I mean, they've what have you
- 9:01spent their money on? Now the drive because same thing
- 9:05flights that happened here leaving both CID and leaving out
- 9:09of DSM if. Anything was drivable.
- 9:11Right now, I would be driving. I would not be taking my chance
- 9:14of the TSA lineup. I saw a line, in fact, in
- 9:17Houston this morning and there was, I don't know, some
- 9:19politicians. I think that's the, I think
- 9:21that's the airport they closed overnight.
- 9:22George Bush, yes. Yeah.
- 9:24And it was like a three hour minimum line to get through
- 9:27there, right? Good luck, good luck, good luck
- 9:31getting there. Drive time from Lincoln to
- 9:35Houston. I'm going to go 10 hours. 10
- 9:37hours Lincoln to Houston. Let's do up.
- 9:40Bring up the Google Maps. Here we go.
- 9:43Lincoln. No, not Lincoln bar.
- 9:45Why? Why does it just assume that I'm
- 9:47coming from a bar? What is wrong with Google?
- 9:49Does it know me too well? No.
- 9:51Lincoln NE, that is going to take you via car.
- 9:56Da, da, da, 13 hours. So basically the same from here.
- 10:00From Des Moines about 13 hours. Now Iowa City a little bit
- 10:02further, it's like 15 hours. Champagne, though, are we
- 10:06getting too far back out to the east?
- 10:09We're going that direction from Champagne, 14 hours.
- 10:13So we're all in the same. About the same, yeah.
- 10:14Everybody's basically in the same boat now.
- 10:18If you're a majority of Illinois fans actually live in Chicago,
- 10:21you're adding even more to that. It's going to be an expensive
- 10:24trip. Tickets are still ridiculous.
- 10:27What does the building look like if we get Iowa, Illinois?
- 10:32Oh my God, Nebraska or Nebraska fans tickets are available.
- 10:37Houston fans tickets are available.
- 10:40I wonder if there's people that are waiting for that Hawkeye
- 10:44fans, cause 'cause you're paying through the nose for it to get
- 10:47there for tomorrow. You take Friday off, you hop in
- 10:52the car, you got a full day of driving.
- 10:53You're a fork because your team just advanced last night.
- 10:56You beat Nebraska, you ended their historic season.
- 10:58You did that. You hop.
- 10:59Jump it on your text thread with your buddies.
- 11:01What do you got? Should we go tomorrow?
- 11:02Should we go tomorrow? Because on top of it, those
- 11:05tickets, if you're playing Illinois as opposed to much more
- 11:08manageable. Oh, God, yeah.
- 11:09You're not talking about I want to sit in the lower bowl for
- 11:12this. Right.
- 11:13OK. Then you're going to, it's going
- 11:15to cost you $1800. Nebraska fans are headed home,
- 11:17too. And that's a component to it.
- 11:20That is probably best case scenario.
- 11:22I think it is. Is that one you don't.
- 11:24Want you don't want, yeah, you don't want Houston to be there
- 11:26sharing the floor with you because those tickets, well, did
- 11:29you see? And there was, they got a laugh
- 11:30out of it to me. And I guess it's funny in their
- 11:32response, some respects. When Samson got off the bus,
- 11:35they took, they took a bus from, you know, their, their team
- 11:39complex to the, to the team hotel.
- 11:42That was a long 5 minute drive. Oh man, yeah, that travelled in
- 11:47this tournament. Just where's on.
- 11:48Yeah. And then the chuckles.
- 11:49Who do you like in the Houston, IL game?
- 11:51Do you have a lean one way or the other?
- 11:53Well. I've got an 80 to one on here on
- 11:54Illinois, so I'm rooting for Illinois.
- 11:57OK, inviting a line I to get home for me.
- 12:00I think Houston wins the game. You do.
- 12:02I mean, it's, it's just it's defense versus offense.
- 12:05It is absolutely another component that does.
- 12:08Look, I won't be shocked if Illinois wins the game.
- 12:10No, they're tremendous. They really are.
- 12:12They're so good offensively and they can, and it's not just a
- 12:15guy we know about Wagler. Right.
- 12:16And just turned himself into a lottery.
- 12:18Yep. There's a whole bunch of EUR
- 12:20that can shoot the basketball. Ben McCollum thought he was
- 12:22going to get a trick. By the way, Ben McCollum, he did
- 12:25every media. I don't know who the Sid is.
- 12:28Over there is the big whites. Still no James Allen's The
- 12:31Basketball. OK, James Allen's the
- 12:32basketball. His phone never stopped ringing,
- 12:35and he accommodated as many people as he could from a
- 12:37colony. And well done, Ben.
- 12:39You get it. You're selling your program.
- 12:41Your program's hot right now. You're the talk of college
- 12:43basketball, or certainly one of them.
- 12:45I know there's a little North Carolina putting the popped up.
- 12:47Yeah, it's gonna take some attention away.
- 12:49And maybe in Lawrence as well. But yesterday, McCollum, he was
- 12:53all over national media. Hats off, hats off.
- 12:57Sell. Your program.
- 13:00Your program's hot. I absolutely loved.
- 13:02We talked about a Monday, what he said.
- 13:03You know about you want to play tough for us, we're looking for
- 13:05tough. Guys.
- 13:07And you're soft? Nope.
- 13:08Go elsewhere and his message is not going to change.
- 13:11I mean, that's what the message is.
- 13:12But to do that to get that national scope and that's people
- 13:16wonder what happened to Iowa basketball and why we saw, you
- 13:19know what the cratering that happened to tennis wise a year
- 13:22ago. It's this, it's this build up,
- 13:24it's this fun, these Sweet 16, the second weekend, the things
- 13:27that the Cyclone fans have now seen three times in the last
- 13:30five years and they've seen a bunch of times what, 6 Times Now
- 13:32in the last 25 years that they've these 3-4 days of just
- 13:37then building up again. And the spotlight that you get
- 13:40it and the national talk and the conversations that are happening
- 13:43everywhere from ESPN to every podcast, every radio station.
- 13:48They're talking about your team. When you don't have that, it's
- 13:52just disappointment. Yeah, disappointment.
- 13:54That's what happens. That's how you can fracture a
- 13:57fan base and what we saw and Ben McCullum brought that back in
- 14:00year. One yeah, Chad, if you know this
- 14:04time this week, most years we're we're taking a long look at the
- 14:06Texas Rangers for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 14:09We're we're we're deep diving baseball, probably dipping our
- 14:13toe into the NFL draft at this point.
- 14:15It has been such a blast this week to have two of our well,
- 14:18three of our teams made the tournament.
- 14:21Two of our teams survived the first weekend of the tournament
- 14:23and and both of these teams have a legitimate chance.
- 14:27I mean I was what a point and a half dog.
- 14:30Yep, Yep. Iowa State is a 4 1/2 point
- 14:33favorite, roughly. Has the Jefferson.
- 14:35Willy or won't even baked into that line possibly.
- 14:41Because. Has it moved?
- 14:43Let me see. Did I?
- 14:44Did I look this morning? I didn't.
- 14:45Let me look and see what the movement is like on that.
- 14:48I think that I may be overstayed injuries in my handicapping and
- 14:52concerned because I asked the question to Mike Palmer a while
- 14:55ago with JT Toppin and he's like even JT Toppin a all American
- 15:01couple points. It just, it's mind boggling for
- 15:05me to try to wrap my mind around something like that because.
- 15:08I see a quarterback go down of any ilk.
- 15:10It's a touchdown, yeah. Absolutely, and depending on the
- 15:12backup bits it might be 10 points.
- 15:14But even an all American player is just that small to the point
- 15:17spread. So Jefferson's same realm as JT
- 15:20topping maybe a point point. And a half numbers gone down was
- 15:244 1/2 everywhere yesterday. There's a couple of fours
- 15:26popped. Circus 4. the Super Book is 4.
- 15:29Caesar's is 4, South point, Chris Andrews down to 4.
- 15:33By the way, did you see some of the pictures from the South
- 15:35point? The opening.
- 15:36I did, yes. Good for you.
- 15:37Chris does a great. Job it really does look if you
- 15:40if you want to get to Vegas for the Super Bowl or for the
- 15:44opening weekend of March Madness and you don't have you know, an
- 15:47unlimited because it's getting expensive folks, it is to do it
- 15:51South point does it does it the way it should be done.
- 15:55It's like turn it back the clock.
- 15:56You know the food prices, the beer prices incredibly
- 15:59reasonable. There's no charge to get into
- 16:02their event. Now you're not going to be in
- 16:03the sports book. You can you're not going to
- 16:05place to sit, but it's and it's such great property.
- 16:10I love staying there. I'm.
- 16:11Right there with. Right, I love school.
- 16:12It is old school by a bunch of old school bookmakers that are
- 16:16still on duty. Where I taught your son Kale how
- 16:19to throw craps. That's right.
- 16:21Sorry about that. Yeah.
- 16:22You mentioned that about a month ago, That damn Condon when he
- 16:25had a bad night. It happens.
- 16:27Yeah, it does. That was a fun trip though.
- 16:29Anyways, let's get the baseball Benny in here.
- 16:33Let's pick his brain. Benny, let me put the right
- 16:36button here. Hello Benny, how are you?
- 16:39I am doing fantastic opening night in baseball, Iowa and Iowa
- 16:43State in the 316 this weekend. Just want to pick Condon's brain
- 16:48with Crayton, Luz and McDermott. Yes.
- 16:50Is there any way we can get back in the Jayden Kuhn?
- 16:55I thought you were going Owen Freeman.
- 16:56Yeah. I was going to cut you off.
- 16:58I don't. Yeah.
- 16:59We don't want him. No, I don't.
- 17:03I don't think that Owen Freeman is going to be welcomed back in
- 17:06Iowa City anytime soon, even with the regime change.
- 17:08But that that aside, Betty, I brought it up on Monday even
- 17:11before the McDermott news was official to Ken.
- 17:13I brought it up on the air. From what I have ascertained,
- 17:19this is not reporting. So who are the schools first?
- 17:21Iowa State's in Iowa, the 1st. Time, yes, TCU was also were
- 17:25they with Jamie Dixon and Illinois I think was the other
- 17:29one. Iowa has not.
- 17:33Nebraska as well. Yes, yes, Iowa did not slow down
- 17:37the relationship. The conversation, not with Coon
- 17:42but representatives, continued the connection to Storm Lake.
- 17:47Now I've had people tell me they believe it's a done deal, that
- 17:50you. Go in Iowa.
- 17:52It is not a source that I would say, Oh yeah, that's happening.
- 17:56Is that something? Again, I'm reporting by any
- 17:58means, but there are people in the basketball community that
- 18:01think that this is happening does.
- 18:04He have a no cut. No, he doesn't.
- 18:06Because, you know, he says Creighton's still very much in
- 18:08the picture. Exactly.
- 18:09We'll see and the process changes.
- 18:11I mean, when you get to this point, he's a top 150 kid, but
- 18:14there's going to be other programs that are getting
- 18:15involved and there's going to be roster flipping and a lot going
- 18:18on. He's going to have plenty of
- 18:19options, but I think he'd be a good fit.
- 18:22He's kind of a big two guard, 65 thick, strong.
- 18:26Is he he will improve, but what he is in the athleticism that
- 18:30he. Has a little shorter.
- 18:31No, I would put him a more muscular joy range.
- 18:36Think of that kind of body type, more muscular than him, but Luke
- 18:41Wrecker, like something in that range.
- 18:43He is athletic. We'll see, though.
- 18:46He's also playing 3A basketball and and seeing how that
- 18:49translates right away. Sometimes that doesn't matter.
- 18:51And I didn't see him or hear much about him on the AAU
- 18:54circuit. I do know though, that Iowa has
- 18:56maintained it, maintained the relationship and certainly I was
- 18:59going to be in the mix at minimum.
- 19:01Benny, let me ask you about your braids real quick.
- 19:03Did they finish 4th or 5th in the East?
- 19:07So with the with what we're dealing with, with the tapes
- 19:11together. Profar.
- 19:14Yeah, I don't. Profar has lost cause.
- 19:17Anyway, I loved the Usrimsky signing when they made it so the
- 19:21Usrimsky was going to get a boatload of that badge.
- 19:23You still have a coup and you still have Olson and Riley who
- 19:26crushed the ball this spring, more worried about they're
- 19:30because you could have bounced back years out of all these and
- 19:32those types of players. More worried about, you know,
- 19:35Grant Holmes has a UCL injury, he's trying to rehab it.
- 19:38You've got Reynaldo Lopez, who he has a part, Yeah.
- 19:43Grant Holmes has a partial tariffs.
- 19:45UCLA just rehabbed it, didn't undergo the knife.
- 19:48He got Lopez that made one start last year, missed the rest of
- 19:52the season. Bryce Alder made 25 or 30 starts
- 19:54with a 5.30 ERA. Strider didn't regain the
- 19:58velocity that he lost after his second surgery on his elbow.
- 20:02Was averaging 94 1/2. And now he's got an oblique
- 20:05strain. So you're talking about a
- 20:07boatload of guys that are #4 and five starters and their best
- 20:11pitcher in camp was a. 20 year old kid that's barely pitched
- 20:15above a ball that pitched a couple games last year and had a
- 20:1913 point ERA, but in spring training the 1st 1st, 9 innings
- 20:25that he went he had 17 strikeouts, no hits, no walks
- 20:29allowed. Yeah, they don't call him the
- 20:31baseball Benny for nothing. Other than that, how's the play,
- 20:34Mrs. Lincoln? Hey, Benny, we got a run, buddy,
- 20:37We got a run. I just got one.
- 20:39Go, go. One more question.
- 20:41Are there any point guards that have Iowa that might be entering
- 20:45the transfer portal that we you think we could get like if
- 20:48Xavion Lee. He's in.
- 20:50Transfer portal, should we get him?
- 20:52I don't know on that front. There was another thing and
- 20:55again, this is just a rumor and appreciate the call Benny some
- 20:58rumbling that was out there that maybe I already I was already
- 21:01identified their guy no name behind it, no connection,
- 21:04nothing like that. But I did see that speculated
- 21:07about that Iowa has an idea of what direction they're going.
- 21:12But again, this is the rumor, but just something that I heard
- 21:15and I like to pass along those things to our.
- 21:18Lives. Is there any connections with
- 21:20Lee in Florida in the portal? I don't think so.
- 21:22Let's get Andy Hawkeye. Andy's on the road, he said.
- 21:25He was leaving. You're on the road.
- 21:26Where are you? Hey, guys.
- 21:29Yeah, we are an hour and a half in.
- 21:32We're in Missouri because I saw the firecracker stores.
- 21:36In Missouri, as soon as you get across the border, right there
- 21:40they are. All the weed and fireworks you
- 21:41can handle. Absolutely.
- 21:44I was just counting. I think we're just going to hit
- 21:464 states, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, so.
- 21:50Good stuff. What?
- 21:51So what time's ETA? The was app Waze app every say
- 21:57it says 1230 but that's without stopping.
- 21:59So we'll see if we can get there by two, 2:30 if we go all the
- 22:04way. Good stuff.
- 22:05Thanks for chiming in, giving us an update on the trip safe drive
- 22:10and enjoy the game. But thanks for listening, Andy.
- 22:12Hey, thank you. Hey, and one last thing.
- 22:14My cousin, third cousin's dentist, said Jane Coon's coming
- 22:17to Iowa. So that works for us.
- 22:19Everybody. We we've used that as gospel
- 22:21before, yes. We have dentists in this radio
- 22:24station anyway, so that's another story.
- 22:28Bill Seals on the road to Chicago.
- 22:30He's next. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 22:33Radio Network 30. Miller and Condon welcome back
- 22:37yeah I was sports radio network or wherever you are listening
- 22:40grateful that you are Trenton I until two Bill Bender from the
- 22:43Sporting News 45 minutes. David Kaplan off to Chicago
- 22:47preview the Cubs the White Sox etcetera.
- 22:50Will the bullet will the Bulls need a new head coach All those
- 22:53topics with Cappy at one O clock then former Hawkeye basketball
- 22:56player Wade looking Bill at 1:30 Bill seals on his way to
- 22:59Chicago. Bill Trenton can thanks for
- 23:01giving us a few minutes. I do want to spend some time on
- 23:04the Iowa State women, the latest there's and other players in the
- 23:07portal. Let's start with the men.
- 23:09Any whispers at all? Are you hearing anything on
- 23:11Jefferson? I know TJ and a couple of
- 23:14players will meet the team somewhere around 3:00 today.
- 23:18What do you anticipate when it comes to Jefferson?
- 23:20What are you going to hear? Well, I've got AI had heard some
- 23:26positive rumors, I guess you could say yesterday that the MRI
- 23:32on him came back clean. I think that was a kind of a
- 23:35precautionary move before they continued to progress in his
- 23:39rehab and then try and get him ready.
- 23:41You know, got got the swelling down in the young ankle, got a
- 23:45better look at it from an MRI. And, you know, I think they're
- 23:49doing as much as they can multiple treatments and each day
- 23:53and, and increasing the movement.
- 23:55And you know, I think they took advantage of of being back in
- 23:58Ames for a few days and the facilities out there and, and
- 24:03you know, they've got on, I think about noon they got on a
- 24:06plane and headed towards Chicago.
- 24:08And I imagine you know, the rest of today, tonight, tomorrow,
- 24:12they'll they'll continue to try and get him continued in the
- 24:15right direction. So when the team gets there,
- 24:18does the bus drop them up right at the front of the hotel?
- 24:21Seeing that some, you know, some of them, Iowa State media
- 24:25members might be greeting the bus and seeing if Jefferson gets
- 24:28off with a walking boot or with crutches.
- 24:31If you have to wheel them out, is that is that a possibility
- 24:34that that can happen? Bill Seals.
- 24:37Well, I think that they'll, they'll walk into the lobby and
- 24:40then we'll be all kind of sitting in the lobby.
- 24:43I'm sure as they walk in though, they'll head out and what I
- 24:48understand have a, well, it'll be a late lunch by the time they
- 24:52get there. They'll head out in and have a
- 24:54late lunch in a banquet hall in there and then we'll get them
- 24:57afterwards. But I would anticipate he's
- 24:59probably got his foot in the boot man got one of those
- 25:03rollers and you know, they'll, they'll keep being, you know,
- 25:07exercising all the costs and they can with him as they they
- 25:10get to the hotel. Question on the recruiting
- 25:13front, Jayden Kuhn, Mr. Basketball here in the state of
- 25:16Iowa, has decommitted from Creighton, Iowa, Iowa State were
- 25:20involved with him at the high school level.
- 25:22Any idea? Any renewed interest now that he
- 25:25has reopened his commitment? I don't think so, Trent.
- 25:29I think that, you know, everything I had heard in his
- 25:33recruitment is that Iowa State kind of dropped off on that
- 25:37towards the latter stages of it. I think that as you saw things
- 25:41play out, you know, with Creighton getting the
- 25:44commitment, I would imagine what I'll probably Iowa, Nebraska
- 25:47will be the two favorites now for him.
- 25:50But I don't foresee Iowa State jumping back in at this point.
- 25:54That is in the process though. Good stuff.
- 25:58Let's a couple more on basketball, men's basketball,
- 26:01then I want to do switch to the women's game.
- 26:03Just get your what what you're hearing as far as happenings
- 26:07there when it comes to Tennessee, Bill, what what do
- 26:11they do that maybe I would stay to spend more time trying to
- 26:15scout in advance of Friday's game.
- 26:17What is what would worry TJ and his staff about the Volunteers,
- 26:21the way that they play? Well, I think you start with
- 26:24the, the rebounding with, with them, they average what about
- 26:2945%. They, they, they offensive
- 26:32rebound, missed shot attempts. And that's how that leads the
- 26:36country per Ken Palm. You know, they're also just
- 26:39strong on the boards overall. They're #2 in the country and,
- 26:43and I believe it's rebounding margin total rebounds so as
- 26:49well. So I mean, they, you know, when
- 26:51you talk to TJ against it before they play any opponent, he's
- 26:54going to stress the, the, that crashed the boards, the need,
- 26:59the pressure, the opponent, turn them over, get in into the
- 27:02break. So I think you, you know, you
- 27:04start first and foremost, you know, Tennessee's long across
- 27:09that frontline as well. What's 610, I think 610 and six
- 27:1311611 across that frontline. And you know, Iowa State with,
- 27:17with Jefferson status in jeopardy, it'll be interesting
- 27:22to see how Iowa State plays. They they played small ball
- 27:26against Tennessee State and Kentucky both wins in the the
- 27:29first weekend. But you wonder if they might try
- 27:32to they, well, they might have to match up a little differently
- 27:36against Tennessee or, or if they'll continue to play small
- 27:39ball and try and get out on the break.
- 27:41You know, one thing I I think you look at with Tennessee is
- 27:46that, you know, with the offensive rebounding numbers
- 27:49that they've had, you know, facing A-Team like Iowa State
- 27:52that wants to get out and run and, you know, get get stops on
- 27:57defense, get out and run. Will Tennessee still send as
- 28:00many guys to the offensive glasses they would or do they
- 28:04try to get back defense? You know, we've seen a lot of
- 28:07teams don't like that with Iowa State.
- 28:10They yeah, yeah, Iowa State has turned teams over.
- 28:13But sometimes the points off turnovers aren't there because
- 28:17teams are getting back on defense.
- 28:20You wonder if that plays out the same like on missed baskets and
- 28:24how many guys Tennessee's will send to the board.
- 28:27So, but you know, as far as the scoring goes, Jacoby Gillespie
- 28:31had a huge game and their their win against Virginia, nada meant
- 28:37a lot of a lot of praise for him.
- 28:39You know, he's one of those frontline guys, but.
- 28:42He's skinny is what for? I mean, he's really skinny,
- 28:45yeah. Yeah, yeah, Iowa State's big
- 28:47men, will, will, will try to push him around a little bit.
- 28:51But you know, one, one guy, that Bishop Boswell, he's another
- 28:56one. I, I think you saw with
- 28:59Kentucky, they, they had those uncontested, those early looks,
- 29:03they nailed them. They, they got up to that early
- 29:07lead. And Boswell's a guy, I think you
- 29:10look at some of those secondary scores for Tennessee, he had, he
- 29:15was four of nine from long distance.
- 29:18And that win against Virginia, 4 of 10 from the field.
- 29:21So that gives you an idea what he's out there to do.
- 29:24And I think Iowa State, yeah, they're going to, they're going
- 29:27to be worried about Gillespie, certainly a, a meant in the
- 29:30front court. But Boswell's a guy.
- 29:33If they if they don't account for him, he could get them off
- 29:36to a good start. Tennessee and and make things
- 29:39difficult for the Cyclone. The defense and I think the on
- 29:42ball defense is going to be the difference for this one for Iowa
- 29:45State. That's why I love this match up.
- 29:47I just think Tennessee too careless with the ball is going
- 29:49to turn it over too much against the pressure when TJ talks about
- 29:52it and outside of the coaching cliches, you know, buying in
- 29:54those kind of things that, you know, we get all the time from
- 29:57coaches. What do you see out of the
- 29:59pressure that they employ and when a ball screen comes and
- 30:02just the way that they're able to get through that and and and
- 30:05change so quickly. What does Iowa State do?
- 30:07Is there anything that you can point to to say this is the
- 30:10reason that he can get all these guys?
- 30:11He's in guys that are limited athletically at times to play at
- 30:15this elite level defensively together.
- 30:17Well, I think it it again, it starts in what June, July when
- 30:21they commenced for those summer workouts.
- 30:23I think that that mindset starts then.
- 30:27I mean, the, the buy in, you're getting guys to play together
- 30:31and, and you know, now, now they're to the point of the
- 30:35season where what you, what you saw in the Big 12 after a point,
- 30:39I, I think you see, you see teams twice.
- 30:42They, they know how to, they know how to, to face a defense
- 30:46like that. You, you see, you know, teams
- 30:49that can swing the ball around you get it to a corner, skip it
- 30:53to the corner real quick for an open 3.
- 30:56And I think just now they, they play what this will be the
- 30:58second SEC team they play, they play Tennessee State.
- 31:02And I, I'm, I just, I, I think what makes it so effective at
- 31:06this point in the season print is a lot of these teams haven't
- 31:09faced a defense like this before.
- 31:11I, I will say though, Tennessee did beat Houston, I believe.
- 31:15Was it like the third week in November, beat Houston by three,
- 31:18saw a little bit of a similar probably defense as what they're
- 31:22going to see with the Cyclones on on Friday.
- 31:25So but yeah, I think what makes it effective in a setting like
- 31:28this is a lot of these teams are so speed up.
- 31:32You know, they get frustrated throwing the ball around.
- 31:34And Iowa State, I think against Kentucky, they just broke their
- 31:38will in the second-half and that pressure really got to him.
- 31:41Now, granted, I think that I think with with Tennessee,
- 31:46they're playing for a little bit more.
- 31:47This isn't A-Team that's kind of been in the tank and very up and
- 31:51down like Kentucky was. I think it will probably be more
- 31:54difficult to break Tennessee's will, but Iowa State's going to
- 31:58try to do that. They're going to have to do
- 32:00that, I think, with the rebounding factor so largely in
- 32:04Tennessee's paper. Yeah, Tennessee.
- 32:05In Tennessee, Houston played in Vegas the same tournament Iowa
- 32:09State was in, right? The what they call it, the
- 32:11Players era tournament Bill. Last thing, let's switch to the
- 32:16women. Another Freya Jensen has entered
- 32:19the portal. Not that she scored a bunch, but
- 32:22the shooter that everybody's waiting to see what happens or
- 32:25the decision that everybody's waiting to see.
- 32:27Obviously, Audie Crooks, Addie Brown is gone.
- 32:30We know that. What do you expect?
- 32:33What's going on here? And obviously the Bill Fenley
- 32:36question gets louder and louder and louder Bill.
- 32:40Yeah, it really does. It really does.
- 32:42Kenny Fryer was the the latest to go into the portal today.
- 32:47If I recall. She had dealt with an an injury
- 32:50I think in the season and just never really got never really
- 32:54got going. I think when the season came
- 32:56around to start and she wasn't healthy and kind of got
- 32:59relegated out of the rotation. You know, the rest is history
- 33:03there. But you know, six so far in the
- 33:06portal. I I think you could say that two
- 33:09of those pretty big losses, obviously Addie Brown, Iowa
- 33:14State's most complete, most all around top player, Reese Beatty,
- 33:19I think, but baby, she had a a bright future.
- 33:22I think what we saw her as a freshman and you know, we will
- 33:26see. We still haven't heard anything
- 33:27out of Audie Crooks. What what she's going to do Jada
- 33:31Williams. That's another both of those in
- 33:34that junior class from this year.
- 33:36Eddie Brown was as well, but Audie and, and Jada were on the
- 33:40on the podium after the loss to Syracuse that the topic actually
- 33:44did come up and they both kind of skirted around the idea.
- 33:47And then that didn't really think it was a question as far
- 33:51as what they're going to do next season.
- 33:53But it makes you wonder with Addie Brown hitting the portal
- 33:56if something's brewing up there. And I, I think you know, you,
- 34:00you look at the recruiting circles as well.
- 34:02I think it's probably a consensus out there on the trail
- 34:06and opposing coaches and stuff thinking that that Bill's going
- 34:09to be done after next season, but he's going to have a lot of
- 34:14players to replace. And the other thing is, is the
- 34:17perception is that he's done after next season.
- 34:21Well, he's got to replace at least six so far players on that
- 34:25rock. It's untenable.
- 34:27It's untenable. It's untenable.
- 34:28Yeah. Yeah, right.
- 34:30Hey, Bill, listen, we're out of time, brother.
- 34:31Appreciate what you do for us. cyclonereport.com, We'll have
- 34:35the very latest from Chicago, and TJ meets the media about
- 34:383:00, somewhere around that time this afternoon.
- 34:41Bill, thanks for doing this, buddy.
- 34:42Appreciate it. Yeah.
- 34:44Take care guys, we'll talk to you soon.
- 34:45Yeah, good to talk to you. But great point about Bill his
- 34:48contracts up next year right do it now.
- 34:51I mean, if you're not going to resign them with all these all
- 34:54this attrition Bill Bender next Miller and Condon I have sports
- 34:57radio network All right, 12:45-ish Miller and Condon
- 35:01welcome back David Kaplan kicks off our number 2 Wade looking
- 35:04Bill about 1:30. Bill Bender right now Sporting
- 35:07News for Bill, primarily football, but he covers all
- 35:11sports. Got his hot list up for the
- 35:15coach at North Carolina to replace Hubert, to replace
- 35:18Hubert Davis. Hello, Bill Bender, good to talk
- 35:21to you and very glad to see that on your list, neither Ben
- 35:24McCullum or TJ Otzelberger listed as we want to keep both
- 35:29of these guys here in the state. How are you, Bill?
- 35:32Well, you're not going to like the list I'm making now.
- 35:35You want about a a certain Kansas coach that is
- 35:39contemplating retirement because I think both of those coaches
- 35:43would be on the hot board for Kansas if that happened.
- 35:45Indeed, that that does make sense.
- 35:47We'll see if either of them go. They're both busy this weekend,
- 35:51which is just great for our state, Bill.
- 35:53I mean, 2 to 216 teams left. Two of them move the needle like
- 35:56none other here in the state that we call home.
- 35:59So when you watch this tournament, Bill, who's caught
- 36:01your eye? If you had to re rank them, who
- 36:04do you think right now the team would be to beat?
- 36:06When you lay out what lies ahead of them, who do you think the
- 36:09team to beat right now the most probable winner is?
- 36:14Right, like they got to get by Arkansas, not going to be easy,
- 36:19but they've been the most complete.
- 36:21And that's not to say the Big 10s obviously been the big story
- 36:24of the tournament with the six teams and the four of those
- 36:27teams have played for national championships since 2000.
- 36:30The the development of Iowa and Nebraska and just two
- 36:34unbelievable games. If you're a fan of just
- 36:37basketball at large, those were incredible basketball games.
- 36:40So, you know, I would say Arizona followed closely by
- 36:43Michigan and then followed after that.
- 36:46Keep an eye on Illinois. I mean, tell me somebody looks
- 36:49better than them there. They are dominating people.
- 36:53This will be the first time I believe ever that two teams
- 36:55coming off of back-to-back 20 point victories will be facing
- 36:59off here in the Sweet 16 with Illinois and Houston.
- 37:01They collide in that one. I'll build the Big 10 angle.
- 37:05It goes without saying though, without a national championship,
- 37:08doesn't matter when we're talking about the national scope
- 37:10of things because that is something that hangs out and I
- 37:13hear it all the time from my Big 12 fans.
- 37:15And you hear from the SEC people and you hear from the ACC Unless
- 37:18you win a national championship, your conference can't be
- 37:20considered the best. Yeah, You know, they dominated
- 37:24the first weekend and that's the point.
- 37:25Like, what better time than now to close this drought and
- 37:29mentioned Michigan, mentioned Michigan State.
- 37:31We know all about how good they are.
- 37:35You know, my Sweet 16 picks are up and if they come through,
- 37:37which they've been OK, straight up, OK, they've been so, so
- 37:42against the spread. But straight up, I have
- 37:46Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, all all advancing to the Elite 8,
- 37:52and I'm missing one. I'm blanking on my 4th one.
- 37:54I have Michigan State losing. So who am I leading?
- 37:57Oh, and I have Illinois winning. Yeah, I think Illinois, if they
- 38:00can get to 75 points, that's the magic number.
- 38:04It's hard to do against Houston. If they get there, they're going
- 38:06to win that game. And then Friday, you've got Duke
- 38:09in a close game and I'm with you.
- 38:10I think this is a nail biter. I think it's way too many
- 38:13points. Michigan gets by Alabama,
- 38:15Michigan State falls to UConn. Bill that that region, it could
- 38:20be a Final four. I mean, you take a look at the
- 38:22names, right? It truly could be a final four.
- 38:25I mean, the coaching matchups, etcetera, etcetera.
- 38:27My God build this tournament just it wasn't great the first
- 38:30weekend for a lot of reasons. This weekend's off the charts.
- 38:34This is the price of getting rid of Cinderella.
- 38:36It's not, you know, you lose that weekend, but what do you
- 38:39get over 4 days? You get, you know, I, we were
- 38:42just discussing this in the Sporting News planning meeting.
- 38:45Rick Pitino. This is, this is the most mind
- 38:47boggling thing to me. He took a team to the Final four
- 38:50in 1987 at Providence. It's been 40 years and he might
- 38:55do it again with St. John's, which would be a four
- 38:58different school. So you know that that St.
- 39:01John's Duke game is as good as it gets.
- 39:03Michigan State U Conn with those two coaches on the sideline is
- 39:06as good as it gets. And I think you just said it
- 39:08best that that does feel like a Final Four within the
- 39:12tournament. They.
- 39:15All do though. And they all do.
- 39:16They all feel closely. They all feel like Final Fours
- 39:20within the Final Four. We were talking a little bit
- 39:22earlier about conferences and the ACC North Carolina fires,
- 39:26Hubert, they're going to move on.
- 39:28Duke. Has Duke just separated
- 39:30themselves somebody else? Because we're used to seeing
- 39:336810 ACC teams and you know, 3-4 of them are Final four
- 39:38contenders year in, year out and that hasn't happened in quite a
- 39:41while in that conference. Is it just as simple as the
- 39:43money, the Big 10, the SEC, what they've done?
- 39:46We'll see kind of going for what the Big 12 looks like.
- 39:48Is that what it is? What's gone wrong here outside
- 39:51of Duke with a ACC basketball? Money.
- 39:54It's money. I think it really is.
- 39:56I mean, when 10 of the Sweet 16 schools are from the SEC and the
- 40:01Big 10, I think you can't help but ignore the money.
- 40:04And, and I was talking to Mike De Corsi, our great basketball
- 40:07writer, about this and when I was doing the Hubert Davis list
- 40:10and I said, he said, you know. They're going to have a hard
- 40:14time pulling somebody from the SEC or the Big 10 because of the
- 40:17money. So you look at a coach like
- 40:19Vanderbilt's Mark Buyington, he's probably a really good home
- 40:23run. Team.
- 40:24North Carolina job, but can they?
- 40:27Which one's the better job that's become fluid?
- 40:30I mean, I would say, you know, North Carolina is probably the
- 40:33second hardest job in college basketball behind Kentucky.
- 40:39Kentucky's impossible. Like, you can never win enough
- 40:41there. And I think North Carolina's
- 40:43pretty close. Yeah, Big Blue Nation.
- 40:45They're different, no doubt about that.
- 40:47Kind of like Husker football in in in a lot of ways, it just
- 40:50means more. That's seemingly all they've
- 40:53got. No and no doubt about that.
- 40:54Speaking of college football, Bill, anything that we should
- 40:57know? Is there any rule change you're
- 40:59keeping an eye on? Anything that we might have
- 41:01missed as we've been focusing on college basketball?
- 41:05Well, I on the side here, I've been getting, you know, by the
- 41:08way, Sporting News will have a college football preview
- 41:11magazine this summer, isn't it? Magazine We're, we're, we're
- 41:15really excited about having that magazine, the preview mag that
- 41:19you get in the summer. And I was working on some Big 10
- 41:23previews this week and you know, I get you excited about that.
- 41:26I think not so much a rule change or anything like that,
- 41:29but just looking at that, that pier of the Big 10 isn't Ohio
- 41:33State, Indiana and Oregon. Who's going to be that school
- 41:36that maybe jumps up and and grabs your attention and reaches
- 41:40the playoffs? There are plenty of candidates.
- 41:42It's going to be a fun season, no doubt.
- 41:44Looking forward to that and yeah, getting the old magazine
- 41:48back out there again. Sporting.
- 41:49News keep us. Posted on that Bill, absolutely.
- 41:52You know, Bill, with that, we talk about it, but it's always
- 41:55so busy at the end of the football season, right?
- 41:57We're getting ready for the playoff.
- 41:59The importance of the Sporting News still has being part of the
- 42:03consensus All American honors. Is that something for you?
- 42:06I mean, that has to a put a little bit more pressure on what
- 42:09you guys do at the Sporting News.
- 42:10But still it to this day, as the industry industry has changed,
- 42:14that The Sporting News still has that moniker has got to be
- 42:16pretty special for you. Oh, for sure.
- 42:19Well, and, and to be clear, it's we're just doing a preview
- 42:21magazine, not like an every week thing like we used to.
- 42:24So which means a lot to me because I when I started at
- 42:28Sporting News we did have the every week magazine and so and
- 42:31the preview magazines are so important to us.
- 42:33It was newspaper when I first started to get it right.
- 42:38And, you know, we celebrated our 140th anniversary and to be a
- 42:41part of a publication where you're working with Mike De
- 42:43Corsi every day. And the, the, the all American
- 42:48part, though, that is the, and I tell you guys this every year,
- 42:52it's arguably the most stressful thing they that I do because I
- 42:55take so much pride in, in carrying that on.
- 42:58And, and you know what it means to the schools, the conferences
- 43:01and some of the discussions we have, it might just say second
- 43:04team All American, but it means a lot to us.
- 43:07Bill Bender from the Sporting News, Look forward to that Bill.
- 43:09Can't wait to to get it in my hands and and get up to speed on
- 43:14college football when it gets back.
- 43:15Bill, thanks for popping on. Appreciate it.
- 43:16Bill Bender, thank you as always.
- 43:18Hey. No problem, thanks for having me
- 43:20on. Going to talk to Bill Bender
- 43:21from The Sporting News is we take a minute for Bill.
- 43:25You know that that Bill's right In a lot of ways, the second
- 43:28weekend of the tournament is this.
- 43:31I wonder what this is going. Is this going to be more popular
- 43:34than the first weekend of the tournament because of the fact
- 43:37that Cinderella is dead and the point spreads are all 182526?
- 43:41Well, we've seen this historically.
- 43:42St. Peters when they got to the
- 43:44Sweet 16, those games did not rate.
- 43:47Cinderella does not rate when we get to the second.
- 43:49Slate, we've got the eight games we've got this week on Thursday.
- 43:53Friday are nuts. Hour 2, Cappy kicks it off off
- 43:57to Chicago. Wade lookingbill, transplays of
- 43:59the day. That's hour 2.
- 44:00It's next on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
