- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Bougie Multipreneur.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Hilary Heschauer Jones.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Thanks for spending some time with me.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Today I want to talk about delegation.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: What can we do less but grow more, right?
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: The whole power of delegating, I mean, we're going to talk about business, but obviously in personal life too, because everything that is personal ends up intermingling with business, right?
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: If you've been with me for a while, you know that I have a couple of chiropractic clinics.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I have a business consulting company.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: I own an event center and I help manage several rentals that my husband and I do.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: So I am very familiar with different types of businesses.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So I kind of just bring my insight into this.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And if you agree, then let me know.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: If you have better ideas, would also love to hear them because obviously I don't know everything.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: But just the other day, I was talking to my office manager at my main chiropractic clinic, and we were talking about just things that were getting left behind, right?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It happens in any business, whether it's you or someone else, it is what it is.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But that at that point, we need to take a look and say to ourselves, what do we need to delegate to someone else or hire out?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite things to do is to have um four squares on a piece of paper or four bubbles and say to myself, what is it that I love to do and no one else in this business can do it?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: That's one, right?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: What is it that I love to do, but I'm not the best at, and someone could still do it?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Then it is, what do I hate to do, but I'm really good at and no one else can do this?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And then the fourth one is more of what is it that I hate to do, but also I'm not good at it.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So what I try to do is pick up things in the business, start with a business or one aspect of the business, because there could be a lot of different tasks.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Once you get these four squares written out, I like to look at the square, the last one.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: What is it that I hate to do and I'm not good at?
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Because that's the best place, in my opinion, to start looking on like outsourcing and delegating some of those tasks.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: If you're thinking of your home life, for me in this box specifically, it was uh making food and grocery shopping and cleaning.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I hate to do all of that, and I'm not good at it, to be honest.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: There's people far better at that than than I.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: So those are like some home things I choose to delegate out and pay someone else because when I look at my hourly rate, I make more per hour doing the things I'm good at, like being a great chiropractor and being a fabulous business coach.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: But I'm not as good at cleaning, and I could pay someone less than I'm worth per hour to clean.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And I know that some of you guys think, well, I'm saving money if I do it myself.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Not necessarily.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And I hope by the end of this podcast, you'll just maybe think a little bit differently.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: I'm not trying to change your mind on what you're doing, but sometimes it's not all about saving money, it's about saving your time too.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: So when you delegate things or you hire out, it's not that you're lazy and you can't do that or um things are too expensive.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: It's you're doing it to be strategic and grow your business.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And that's why I really like the four squares.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: If you need these four squares, I do have a little template with my HHJ consulting.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: I'd be happy to send it to you.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: So just reach out to me on social media, whatever.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Um, some things that people say, well, I could do it better or I could do it faster than if I gave it to someone else.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, maybe.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: But is that in the block of that you are the only one that can do it?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Or do you love it so much you just can't give it up?
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, I understand that.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: There are certain things that I love to do, and other people are probably better at it than me.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: But for instance, one of my things is I do love creating and interacting on social media.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Am I the best at it?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: No, no, I'm not.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: But I do enjoy it.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: I don't hate it, I'm not the world's worst at it, so I'm gonna keep doing it.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: But there are a lot of things that I'm just not the best at.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So anyone else could do it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Take hiring, for instance.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I'm not the best at hiring.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Now I've been practicing for over 17 years at this, read tons of books, take courses.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: I'm better than a lot of people I know, that's for sure.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: But I'm still not the best.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And honestly, you guys, I don't really love it.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: I know, surprise, but I do it.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And lately, over the past few years, I've been delegating that out to someone else to do.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Now, as a business coach, I've actually done some of the hiring and training for some of my people that I coach because they also hate it and are not good at it.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, as your business coach, I will go above and beyond for you.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Some people might think, well, I can't afford to do this.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I can't afford to hire anyone or outsource it.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Sometimes can you afford not to, right?
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Like if you make more money per hour doing whatever job it is you're doing, could you work another hour and make more money and hire that out, especially if it's something you don't enjoy doing?
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: So sometimes holding on to everything really costs you time and money.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And I'm a big fan that time is money.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And so you can't just give it away all the time.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: You need that either for yourself or for your business or for your job, whatever it is.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: So, some like time-consuming work might be like admin work or emails and scheduling things, they make great VAs for that.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: It's so easy, right?
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: You could even hire someone at minimum wage to do some easy task like that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Um, if it's outside of your zone, like for instance, you um need graphics or social media or bookkeeping.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: If that's not your main job and you aren't the best at it, that might be a great one to look into letting go also.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Let's say it takes you two hours per month to bookkeep and you hire someone that can do it in 30 minutes.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Not only are you saving two hours of your time, but instead of those two hours, like make more money now.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Like, don't not do anything, unless that's what you're looking for, but you can use those two hours and put something else, some more work in there, something that you can only do.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: So, like as a chiropractor, I can only, I can't just have my office manager adjust people, right?
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: There's certain tasks that are only gonna be on my shoulders, whether or not I like them, because that's the I'm the only one there to do it, maybe.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Unless I hire my other three associates and they can do it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: But if you're a solo chiropractor, that is in your box of you love it or you don't, but you're the only one that can do it in that business.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: So you have to take more time to do that.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And then again, if someone else can do it for like cheaper than you are per hour, let's say you can hire something for$20 an hour, but when you look at how much you make per hour and you might make a hundred or two hundred dollars an hour, then for all by all means, like hire someone else to do that stuff.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: You can delegate like your bookkeeping, your admin stuff, your social media, things like that.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: That even like I was telling you, I enjoy my social media, but there is some that I still delegate out, you know, the things that I'm not the best at, even though I love to do it.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: I can agree that maybe I'm not the best at certain things, and I can delegate that out, but I can have a portion of it that way I still get the excitement and and the creativity that I like doing social media, but I'm not doing it all day, every day.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Um, and then for instance, with my event center, I enjoy talking to people about it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I don't enjoy like doing the contracts and all the like legal stuff and the fine lines and the invoicing.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I don't really enjoy that.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: So I hire someone part-time to help me with that.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: You know, it's a brand new business.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Do I need to pay someone to do that?
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: No, but I could be out networking and bringing in more people and more leads while she's doing all the behind the scenes stuff that she enjoys that I actually just don't, right?
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: So make sure also like you are investing in the people, right?
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: You're investing your time, not just monetary, but you're training the people, even if it's like a part-time or contract, you can just never stop training people, right?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And I think about that in my chiropractic office is just you never we never stop learning, we never stop training.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Even if you've already trained them once, you're probably gonna train them a few more times.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and then if you're someone that has to have perfection, that might be something that you need to work on too, is like sometimes you just need to do it.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: It it may not be perfect, and you might just need some progress over the perfection of it, right?
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And um, I'm not someone that's a perfectionist, so I can't speak to that, but I do coach a few people that are perfectionists, and I it does hinder, it gets in the way of a lot of your guys' stuff.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: So sometimes something is better than nothing, in my opinion.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but when you thought about, let's say you you own a business and you're listening to me, when you think about when you started the business, you didn't start out to be burnt out, right?
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: You didn't start out thinking I want to work 80 hours a week and kill myself and never have any time.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Like no one ever thinks that way.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: You you did it for the freedom of it, for the love, for the excitement and to grow money and not work for anyone else.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: So in it's probably time to think about delegating.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: So I'll give you guys a challenge.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: This week, think of one thing that you need to delegate, but then actually do it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Remember, it's more than just thinking about things and dreaming about things.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: You actually have to take the step and the inch forward and actually do it.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: I would love to hear like what it is you thought of.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And I just want to recap um my four squares or my four items so you can think about this, but feel free to reach out to me.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: We want to think about a list of things in your office.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Heck, you could do it in your your personal life too, but four things that you love to do and no one else can do better than you.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Um, also think about things that you hate to do, but no one else can do better than you.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Things that you love to do, but there are some people that can do it better than you, honestly.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: And then the fourth one things that you hate to do and you're just not good at, and definitely someone else could do it.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Put those things on that list, reach out to me, would love to hear what they are.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: I love this topic, and it's just, I mean, it's business, it's personal, it's all of it.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Teach it to our kids and uh let's get out there, make some money.
