Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Pomoja Ministry. In our last conversation,
- 0:04we talked about the people God uses in our process.
- 0:08Some encourage us. Some correct us. Some support
- 0:13us. Some challenge us. Some teach us boundaries.
- 0:18Some are part of our journey for a season. And
- 0:21we discovered that although people can play important
- 0:24roles in our lives, people are not our source.
- 0:28God is our source. But today, I want us to go
- 0:31one step further. Because sometimes God doesn't
- 0:35only use people. Sometimes He uses places. Sometimes
- 0:40He uses circumstances. Sometimes He uses discomfort.
- 0:45There are places we would probably remain forever
- 0:48if they continued to feel comfortable. There
- 0:51are seasons we would never leave if nothing disturbed
- 0:54us. There are environments we have outgrown.
- 0:58But because they are familiar, we keep trying
- 1:01to remain there. And sometimes we pray, God,
- 1:06make this comfortable again, while God may be
- 1:09saying, I am trying to move you. Today, we are
- 1:13talking about when God makes the place uncomfortable.
- 1:17Be careful, comfort can become a cage. Comfort
- 1:22is not evil. Rest is biblical. Peace is a blessing.
- 1:26Stability is valuable. But comfort becomes dangerous
- 1:30when it makes us resistant to movement. Sometimes
- 1:35we become so comfortable with what God did yesterday
- 1:39that we stop asking what He is doing today. We
- 1:43know the people. We know the system. We know
- 1:46the routine. We know what to expect. And even
- 1:50when we sense that something is changing, familiarity
- 1:54tells us, stay here. Because moving requires
- 1:58faith, moving requires uncertainty, moving requires
- 2:02releasing what we know, and sometimes the place
- 2:06that no longer fits our purpose still feels safer
- 2:10than the place God is calling us toward. So God
- 2:14may allow circumstances that force us to confront
- 2:18a question we have been avoiding. Is my season
- 2:22here ending? Israel became comfortable in Egypt.
- 2:28Israel's relationship with Egypt did not begin
- 2:31with slavery. That is important. Joseph's family
- 2:35came to Egypt during famine. Egypt was initially
- 2:39a place of preservation. There was food there.
- 2:43There was protection there. There was provision
- 2:46there. There was survival there. Egypt was an
- 2:49answer to a crisis. But generations passed. Joseph
- 2:53died. A new Pharaoh arose who did not know Joseph
- 2:58and the place that once preserved Israel eventually
- 3:02became the place that oppressed Israel. That
- 3:06teaches us something important. A place can be
- 3:09right for one season and wrong for another. Something
- 3:14does not have to have been a mistake simply because
- 3:17its season eventually ends. Egypt had served
- 3:21a purpose. But Egypt was never the promise. And
- 3:25sometimes we confuse the place where God preserved
- 3:28us with the place where God intends us to remain
- 3:32permanently. Then the cry changed. Exodus tells
- 3:37us that Israel groaned because of their slavery.
- 3:40They cried out. And their cry went up to God.
- 3:44God heard them. God remembered His covenant.
- 3:47God saw them. And God knew. Notice what suffering
- 3:51did. used to cry. The environment became so uncomfortable
- 3:56that Israel began crying for deliverance. And
- 4:00sometimes there are prayers that comfort never
- 4:03teaches us to pray. There are cries that only
- 4:06come when remaining where we are becomes unbearable.
- 4:10This does not mean God delights in suffering,
- 4:13but it means suffering does not have to be wasted.
- 4:17Sometimes pain awakens something. Sometimes pressure
- 4:21exposes that we have settled. Sometimes discomfort
- 4:24reminds us, this cannot be all God has for me.
- 4:29Sometimes the place that saved you cannot take
- 4:32you where you are going. Egypt preserved Israel
- 4:36during famine, but Egypt could not fulfill Israel's
- 4:40covenant destiny. There was a promised land ahead.
- 4:44That means Israel eventually had to leave the
- 4:47very place that once saved them from starvation.
- 4:51Think about that. Sometimes we become emotionally
- 4:54attached to something because we remember what
- 4:57it did for us. A job helped you through a difficult
- 5:01season. A relationship carried you through loneliness.
- 5:06A church helped you heal. A city gave you opportunity.
- 5:11A position gave you stability. A particular environment
- 5:15protected you when you needed protection, and
- 5:18all of that may have been real, but gratitude
- 5:22for what something was should not prevent discernment
- 5:25about what its season is now. You can thank God
- 5:29for Egypt and still leave Egypt. Then Pharaoh
- 5:34became part of the pressure. When God sent Moses
- 5:39to Pharaoh, Pharaoh resisted. Again, and again.
- 5:44Then Israel finally left, but Pharaoh changed
- 5:48his mind and pursued them. Now Israel had Pharaoh
- 5:51behind them and the Red Sea in front of them.
- 5:55There was no comfortable option. They could not
- 5:58simply return to yesterday. They could not manufacture
- 6:02tomorrow. They had to depend upon God, and God
- 6:08opened the sea. Sometimes the pressure behind
- 6:11you becomes part of what prevents you from returning
- 6:14to a place God is bringing you out of. There
- 6:18are moments when God allows yesterday to become
- 6:21so uncomfortable that going backward no longer
- 6:25feels like safety. And perhaps some of us have
- 6:28been praying, God, remove the pressure. While
- 6:32God is using the pressure to teach us, stop looking
- 6:36backward. But not every uncomfortable situation
- 6:41means leave. We need wisdom here. This is extremely
- 6:45important. We cannot teach that every difficult
- 6:48job means God wants you to resign. Every difficult
- 6:52marriage means God wants you to leave. Every
- 6:55church disagreement means God wants you somewhere
- 6:58else. Every conflict means a season has ended.
- 7:02Every uncomfortable relationship means somebody
- 7:05needs to disappear. Sometimes discomfort means
- 7:09stay and grow. Sometimes it means stay and confront.
- 7:13Sometimes stay and forgive. Sometimes stay and
- 7:17develop discipline. Sometimes stay and learn
- 7:20patience. And sometimes move. The question is
- 7:24not simply Am I uncomfortable? The question is,
- 7:28God, what are you saying through the season?
- 7:31That requires discernment. Jonah was uncomfortable
- 7:36too. This distinction matters because sometimes
- 7:40discomfort is not God moving us forward. Sometimes
- 7:44discomfort is the consequence of moving in the
- 7:47wrong direction. Jonah received instruction,
- 7:50go to Nineveh. Jonah went toward Tarshish. Then
- 7:54came the storm. That storm was not confirmation
- 7:57that Tarshish was difficult. It was interruption.
- 8:01So we must never interpret circumstances without
- 8:05prayer and scripture. Not every closed door means
- 8:08no. Not every open door means yes. Not every
- 8:13storm means attack. Not every easy road means
- 8:16God's will. Not every difficult road means you
- 8:20missed God. We need discernment. Sometimes God
- 8:24uses discomfort to move us forward. Sometimes
- 8:27he uses discomfort to turn us around. The important
- 8:31thing is learning to hear him. God may disturb
- 8:35what you have settled into. There are moments
- 8:39when we stop moving because something has become
- 8:42good enough. Not God's best, just familiar enough.
- 8:46predictable enough, safe enough, and purpose
- 8:49becomes secondary to security. Then something
- 8:52changes. The environment changes. The leadership
- 8:56changes. The opportunity changes. The relationship
- 8:59changes. The resources change. The door that
- 9:03used to open easily becomes difficult. And immediately
- 9:06we assume something is wrong. Maybe. But sometimes
- 9:11something is changing because your season is
- 9:14changing. What if God is allowing you to become
- 9:18uncomfortable because comfort has become stronger
- 9:21than calling? Abraham had to leave. God told
- 9:27Abram, go from your country, your people and
- 9:31your father's household to the land I will show
- 9:34you. Notice, God did not initially give Abraham
- 9:38the entire map. He gave him direction. Go. There
- 9:43are seasons when purpose requires leaving familiarity
- 9:47before you possess complete information about
- 9:50the destination. That requires faith. We want,
- 9:53God, show me everything, show me where, show
- 9:56me how, show me when, show me who will help me,
- 9:59show me how it will end, then I will move. But
- 10:03sometimes God says, move, and I will show you.
- 10:07That is uncomfortable, but faith often begins
- 10:10where certainty ends. Joseph's places kept changing.
- 10:15Think again about Joseph, his father's house,
- 10:19the pit, Potiphar's house, prison, the palace.
- 10:23Every place was different, and every place developed
- 10:26something. At home, Joseph had the dream. In
- 10:30Potiphar's house, he learned responsibility.
- 10:33In prison, he exercised leadership without status.
- 10:38In the palace, those earlier lessons suddenly
- 10:41mattered. What looked like disconnected places
- 10:44were actually forming one person. Joseph did
- 10:48not know while managing Potiphar's household
- 10:51that one day he would manage Egypt's resources.
- 10:54But God knew. This is why you must be careful
- 10:58about despising temporary places. Temporary does
- 11:02not mean meaningless. Maybe you are not where
- 11:05you ultimately belong. But there may still be
- 11:08something where you are that you need for where
- 11:11you are going. Don't leave before you learn.
- 11:17This is another danger. Sometimes we become so
- 11:20focused on leaving an uncomfortable season that
- 11:23we fail to receive what the season came to teach.
- 11:26We say, God, get me out. And perhaps God is saying,
- 11:32before I get you out, I need to get something
- 11:35out of you. Maybe impatience. Maybe pride. Maybe
- 11:39fear. Maybe dependency upon people's approval.
- 11:44Maybe lack of discipline. Maybe inability to
- 11:47work with difficult people. Maybe an uncontrolled
- 11:50tongue. Maybe poor boundaries. Maybe insecurity.
- 11:56Because if God changes the location without changing
- 11:59the person, sometimes we simply recreate the
- 12:02same problem in a new place. You can leave Egypt
- 12:06geographically while Egypt remains inside you.
- 12:11And Israel demonstrated this repeatedly in the
- 12:14wilderness. Their bodies had left Egypt. But
- 12:17when pressure came, their minds kept saying,
- 12:21let's go back. God was not only taking Israel
- 12:25out of Egypt. He had to take Egypt out of Israel,
- 12:28that is, refinement. The wilderness was not the
- 12:32destination. But neither was the wilderness the
- 12:35promise. This matters, too. Some Christians become
- 12:40so accustomed to suffering that they almost develop
- 12:43a theology of permanent wilderness. No. There
- 12:49was purpose in the wilderness. There was manna.
- 12:52There was revelation. There was dependence. There
- 12:56was discipline. There was preparation. But there
- 13:00was also a promised land ahead. Do not make a
- 13:04permanent home in a place God intended as preparation.
- 13:09The wilderness teaches you how to depend upon
- 13:11God, but eventually dependence must accompany
- 13:15you into promise. Sometimes the old place no
- 13:20longer fits. Sometimes you recognize that a season
- 13:25is ending because what once fit no longer fits.
- 13:29The grace for it feels different. The assignment
- 13:32feels complete. Your priorities have changed.
- 13:36God has developed new capacity. New responsibility
- 13:40is emerging. The old environment cannot accommodate
- 13:43what is growing. And this is where fear becomes
- 13:47loud. Because even an uncomfortable familiar
- 13:50place can feel safer than an unfamiliar promise.
- 13:55Israel literally said, let's go back to Egypt.
- 13:59Why? Because slavery was familiar, promise was
- 14:03uncertain. That is one of the strangest tendencies
- 14:06of human nature. We can prefer familiar bondage
- 14:10to unfamiliar freedom. Refinement teaches us
- 14:13to trust God beyond familiarity. Sometimes God
- 14:19uses opposition to keep you moving. There were
- 14:23moments throughout Israel's history when opposition
- 14:27drove them back toward dependence upon God. The
- 14:31book of Judges repeatedly shows Israel wandering,
- 14:35experiencing oppression, crying to God, and being
- 14:38delivered. Again, we must not turn every enemy
- 14:42into somebody God personally assigned to our
- 14:46lives. But scripture clearly shows that God can
- 14:50use even opposition within his disciplinary and
- 14:53redemptive purposes. Sometimes the very thing
- 14:57you wish would disappear is exposing how far
- 15:00you have drifted from prayer. Sometimes pressure
- 15:04restores priorities. Sometimes opposition reveals
- 15:08where you place too much confidence in yourself.
- 15:12Sometimes the situation you hate has you praying
- 15:15again, reading scripture again, seeking God again.
- 15:20reconsidering your decisions, reordering your
- 15:24life. And then years later, you realize the situation
- 15:28was painful, but God refused to waste the pain.
- 15:33Psalm 100, 1967 says, I obeyed. Then verse 71
- 15:52says, It was good for me to be afflicted so that
- 15:56I might learn your decrees. The psalmist is not
- 16:00saying pain itself is wonderful. He is recognizing
- 16:04what God produced through it. Something changed.
- 16:07Direction changed. Priorities changed. Obedience
- 16:12changed. And maybe that is somebody's testimony.
- 16:16Before this happened, I barely prayed. Before
- 16:20this happened, I ignored warning signs. Before
- 16:23this happened, I was too comfortable. Before
- 16:27this happened, my priorities were confused. Before
- 16:31this happened, I thought I could handle everything
- 16:34myself. Then the fire came, and I began seeking
- 16:38God differently. I love this statement from Pastor
- 16:43Lawson Whitson from New Life Church of Jesus
- 16:46Christ in Concord, North Carolina. If it made
- 16:49you pray, it wasn't bad at all. So perhaps we
- 16:53can say it this way. If what was meant to break
- 16:56you drove you back to prayer, evil did not get
- 16:59the final word. If the difficult season restored
- 17:02your priorities, pain did not get the final word.
- 17:06If losing something taught you what truly mattered,
- 17:10loss did not get the final word. If rejection
- 17:13pushed you toward the identity God had already
- 17:16given you, Rejection did not get the final word.
- 17:20If discomfort moved you from a place where you
- 17:23had settled, discomfort did not get the final
- 17:26word. God is still writing. Remember this principle.
- 17:33Don't curse the place that prepared you. One
- 17:37day Joseph could look backward differently. The
- 17:40pit was terrible. Slavery was terrible. False
- 17:44accusation was terrible. Prison was terrible.
- 17:48But none of those places became wasted places.
- 17:52Each chapter contributed something. And perhaps
- 17:55there are places in your story you currently
- 17:58hate. Don't romanticize them. Don't call evil
- 18:03good. But don't conclude too quickly that nothing
- 18:07valuable can come from them. You may one day
- 18:10discover that you learned something there you
- 18:13needed somewhere else. the patience, the discipline,
- 18:18the leadership, the discernment, the prayer life,
- 18:22the boundaries, the humility, the resilience,
- 18:25the dependence upon God. The place may have been
- 18:29temporary, but the lesson may become permanent.
- 18:34Maybe, only maybe, God is moving you. So ask
- 18:38yourself, am I fighting to remain somewhere because
- 18:42God is telling me to stay? or because I am afraid
- 18:45to move? Am I calling something spiritual warfare
- 18:49when perhaps a season is ending? Am I trying
- 18:52to reopen a door God allowed to close? Am I asking
- 18:57God to restore comfort when He is developing
- 18:59movement, but also ask, am I trying to leave
- 19:03simply because staying requires maturity? Am
- 19:07I interpreting correction as rejection? Am I
- 19:10running from a place God is using to develop
- 19:13me? Those questions require prayer. They require
- 19:17scripture. They require the Holy Spirit. They
- 19:20require wisdom. Because the goal is not simply
- 19:24to escape discomfort. The goal is to remain aligned
- 19:28with purpose. Maybe the place is not the purpose.
- 19:33Egypt was not Israel's purpose. The wilderness
- 19:37was not Israel's purpose. The pit was not Joseph's
- 19:41purpose. Potiphar's house was not Joseph's final
- 19:45purpose. Prison was not Joseph's final purpose.
- 19:48Those were places within the process. Do not
- 19:52confuse your current location with the conclusion
- 19:55of your story. Maybe you are in a place of preparation.
- 19:59Maybe a place of correction. Maybe a place of
- 20:02healing. Maybe a place of waiting. Maybe a place
- 20:05where God is teaching you what you will need
- 20:08later. Maybe a place you are being prepared to
- 20:11leave. But wherever you are, ask, God, what is
- 20:15this season producing in me? Because if God is
- 20:18refining you there, the place is not wasted.
- 20:22Sometimes, God makes the place uncomfortable.
- 20:26Maybe you have been asking God, Why did this
- 20:29change? Why did something that once felt peaceful
- 20:32become difficult? Why did something that once
- 20:35fit suddenly feel too small? Why did circumstances
- 20:39shift? Why did the old place stop feeling like
- 20:42home? Sometimes there is no simple answer, but
- 20:46sometimes God is moving you. Not because the
- 20:51previous season was necessarily bad, but because
- 20:54its assignment may be complete. The place that
- 20:58preserved you may not be the place that fulfills
- 21:01you. The place that healed you may not be the
- 21:05place where you build. The place where you learned
- 21:09may not be the place where you lead. The place
- 21:13where you were hidden may not be the place where
- 21:16you remain. And sometimes, God must disturb what
- 21:20we have settled into, because purpose is calling
- 21:24us forward. So don't worship comfort. Don't worship
- 21:28familiarity. Don't worship stability. Worship
- 21:32God. If he says stay, stay faithfully. If he
- 21:36says grow, grow patiently. If he says wait, wait
- 21:41faithfully. If he says return, return humbly.
- 21:45And if he says move, move courageously. Because
- 21:49sometimes the discomfort is not evidence that
- 21:51God has abandoned you. Sometimes it is evidence
- 21:54that the season is changing. You are not being
- 21:57destroyed. You are being repositioned. You are
- 22:01not being forgotten. You are being prepared.
- 22:04You are not wandering without purpose. God is
- 22:08teaching you to discern His movement. And even
- 22:11in uncomfortable places, you are being refined
- 22:15for a purpose. This is Pomoja Ministry. And in
- 22:21our next conversation, we will go even deeper
- 22:23into Joseph's revelation. Because eventually
- 22:27Joseph looked at the people who betrayed him
- 22:29and understood something extraordinary. They
- 22:32had an intention, but God had a purpose. Conversation
- 22:389. You meant it for evil, but God meant it for
- 22:42good.
