Latest / Birdland Territory / Is the O's season teetering on brink after the sweep at Tampa Bay?

- 0:07Speaker 1: In a season with a lot of frustration around Birdland.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Today may have topped them all as the Orioles get
- 0:13Speaker 1: swept in Tampa Saint Pete to lose to the Rage
- 0:16Speaker 1: five to three, three to one lead in the eighth evaporates.
- 0:19Speaker 1: They give up four late runs and get swept and
- 0:23Speaker 1: they come home really reeling. Now eight games under twenty one,
- 0:26Speaker 1: twenty nine, and so it's a low point. I wonder
- 0:30Speaker 1: if it's the low point and things start getting better
- 0:33Speaker 1: from here. But we have asked that question repeatedly on
- 0:36Speaker 1: Birdland Territory this year. Welcome in everybody, Steve Brad and
- 0:40Speaker 1: Tim hope you follow. Subscribe to our show on YouTube
- 0:45Speaker 1: as we're closing in on one thousand subscribers, which will
- 0:48Speaker 1: be a great milestone. So, gentlemen, what are you feeling
- 0:51Speaker 1: now a few hours after this game got away from
- 0:54Speaker 1: the Orioles today at the Trap.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, tough one today.
- 0:58Speaker 3: It's it's rustrating, it's disappointing, it's there. I mean, there's
- 1:02Speaker 3: a plethora of emotions I imagine fans are feeling right now.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It's that was a tough one.
- 1:08Speaker 3: When you lose, lose a serious we get swept in
- 1:11Speaker 3: a series with the team at the top of the division.
- 1:14Speaker 3: You take that game today, it's a one game swing.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Losing that game is now a three game swing to
- 1:18Speaker 3: the person the team you're chasing. And it was just
- 1:22Speaker 3: with the bullpen, it was, you know, we haven't seen
- 1:25Speaker 3: that happen, so it's it was like a new way
- 1:27Speaker 3: to lose, and they, unfortunately.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Weren't able to get it done.
- 1:30Speaker 3: And I think that's what made it so disappointing and
- 1:32Speaker 3: frustrating was that now it's the bullpen blows a game
- 1:35Speaker 3: after you know, not hitting the night before and starting
- 1:37Speaker 3: pitching being bad the day before that. You kind of
- 1:39Speaker 3: saw all three phases kind of fail them in this
- 1:42Speaker 3: series in Tampa.
- 1:45Speaker 4: That was a frustrating loss, guys.
- 1:47Speaker 5: I mean, the age just got done on one of five,
- 1:49Speaker 5: seven of the fans taking caller after caller, and everyone's upset.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Everyone's frustrated, and they have ever rightd to be.
- 1:56Speaker 5: I think that that was the biggest gut punch loss
- 2:01Speaker 5: of the season. And this team has taken a lot
- 2:03Speaker 5: of tough losses, They've taken blowout losses, but this, considering
- 2:08Speaker 5: the circumstances, right guys, where bred I think you put
- 2:12Speaker 5: it perfect like this was a huge twin game where
- 2:15Speaker 5: you end up winning this. Okay, you come back. You're
- 2:19Speaker 5: facing a Tigers team that's lost fourteen of sixteen heading
- 2:22Speaker 5: into their game tonight. All right, maybe you can regroup.
- 2:25Speaker 5: But that eighth inning, it pretty much encapsulated the entire season. Guys,
- 2:32Speaker 5: all those runs scored with two outs. There was a
- 2:35Speaker 5: play Aronda on the double Colden Cowser couldn't handle it
- 2:40Speaker 5: well that ended up leading to a run. The Rays
- 2:44Speaker 5: executed a double steal and Jackson Holliday ended up air
- 2:48Speaker 5: mailing the throw home. It was just a comedy of errors.
- 2:52Speaker 5: And then Taylor Ward Gunner Henderson Adley Routchman went down one, two,
- 2:56Speaker 5: three in the ninth inning.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Eight game teams.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Below five hundred, no one, no one could have envisioned
- 3:04Speaker 5: that this team would be at this spot on May twentieth.
- 3:09Speaker 1: We're all wondering what the ownership of the team is thinking,
- 3:12Speaker 1: if we'll hear from them in any way, shape or form,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and what this means. Because the fans are jumping Michael
- 3:18Speaker 1: las who've been through this before. It's all falling on
- 3:22Speaker 1: him right now because they made other numerous changes over
- 3:25Speaker 1: the last year or two and it's not going the
- 3:27Speaker 1: way they wanted. And I mean so many stats are
- 3:30Speaker 1: damning for the team right now, including this when the
- 3:32Speaker 1: Oars are winless on the road against the Yankees and
- 3:35Speaker 1: Rays have been outscored by forty four runs in seven games,
- 3:39Speaker 1: so most have been not competitive. Today obviously was competitive
- 3:43Speaker 1: as they lose five to three. So what will it
- 3:47Speaker 1: will some of the pressure that fans are cranking up
- 3:50Speaker 1: here on all of our shows and blogs, shows like
- 3:53Speaker 1: this and my newsletter on Substack, Tim, Will that have
- 3:57Speaker 1: an impact your experience in the media.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Would have an impact on the players, well, would have.
- 4:04Speaker 1: An impact on the ownership of the team in any
- 4:07Speaker 1: moves they might make.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I've been saying this Steve Well.
- 4:12Speaker 5: First off, we you really don't see GM's president of
- 4:17Speaker 5: baseball operations fired midseason that often. I think things would
- 4:21Speaker 5: have to really really go sideways in order for that
- 4:26Speaker 5: to happen. But this is something I've been saying a
- 4:29Speaker 5: lot on the fan recently. If you went to Michaelias
- 4:34Speaker 5: in December twenty eighteen, and let's just say that this
- 4:39Speaker 5: season continues to spiral and they don't make the playoffs
- 4:44Speaker 5: and they have another losing record, if you went to
- 4:47Speaker 5: Mike at his introductory press conference and you said, in
- 4:52Speaker 5: your first eight years as GM, you would not have
- 4:56Speaker 5: a single playoff win. He would say that's a failure.
- 5:00Speaker 5: There's really no way around that. He would say that
- 5:04Speaker 5: that is a failure.
- 5:06Speaker 4: And it's really.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Unfortunate because June twenty first, twenty twenty four, is that
- 5:14Speaker 5: date that is sort of living an infamy right now
- 5:17Speaker 5: because the day prior, the Orioles beat the Yankees, I believe,
- 5:22Speaker 5: seventeen to four in the Bronx.
- 5:23Speaker 4: They curb stomped them.
- 5:25Speaker 5: They won that series, and they had one of the
- 5:27Speaker 5: best records in all of baseball, and at that point
- 5:30Speaker 5: that they had the best record in the American League
- 5:32Speaker 5: going back to twenty twenty three, and since then, I believe,
- 5:36Speaker 5: you're twenty three games below five hundred and we're coming
- 5:40Speaker 5: up on two full calendar years.
- 5:42Speaker 4: And it's shocking.
- 5:45Speaker 6: I keep asking the question, you know, on the fan, like,
- 5:49Speaker 6: how the heck do they get to this point? It's
- 5:53Speaker 6: and it's not just one thing, and it's not just
- 5:56Speaker 6: all Michael Oas.
- 5:57Speaker 5: It's the players, it's player developed, it's it's everything. At
- 6:01Speaker 5: this point, this is a collective organizational problem, and.
- 6:07Speaker 4: It's a shame. I really, it really is.
- 6:10Speaker 5: It's a shame. And look, they're fifty games in. It's
- 6:14Speaker 5: no longer early. There's certainly a ton of baseball left
- 6:18Speaker 5: one hundred and twelve games and it's not impossible for
- 6:21Speaker 5: them to turn this around.
- 6:23Speaker 4: But right now it's a shame. It's a shame. There's
- 6:27Speaker 4: no way rough.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It's rough and brad from a player perspective, when there's
- 6:31Speaker 1: all this fan pressure and some media pressure maybe too
- 6:35Speaker 1: on the team, and it's the front office is feeling
- 6:38Speaker 1: the brunt of it right now. What impact could that
- 6:41Speaker 1: have in the clubhouse? Could it be positive in any
- 6:44Speaker 1: way or is that just another thing to overcome?
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think it can kind of go
- 6:49Speaker 3: both ways. I think it can be a positive thing
- 6:51Speaker 3: where guys just band together and it's us against you know,
- 6:54Speaker 3: everybody else. It's like it's it's it's all on us.
- 6:57Speaker 3: But it's at the same time, you can see this
- 7:00Speaker 3: season slipping away and it's now a lot of these
- 7:02Speaker 3: guys have tasted the playoffs.
- 7:03Speaker 2: They know what a playoff team looks like. They know
- 7:05Speaker 2: what it's like for.
- 7:06Speaker 3: This organization to get to the playoffs and how awesome
- 7:08Speaker 3: Baltimore is when the team is in it and in
- 7:10Speaker 3: the playoffs, so it just kind of seems like it
- 7:13Speaker 3: can just be slipping away here and it's I don't
- 7:16Speaker 3: think it's something that guys are going to be talking
- 7:18Speaker 3: about where you know, the fans are against us or
- 7:22Speaker 3: that kind of thing.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I just think it's you feel that added pressure.
- 7:24Speaker 3: These guys have enough pressure on themselves as it is
- 7:27Speaker 3: individually to show up to the field every day and
- 7:29Speaker 3: do what they do that just having any added pressure
- 7:33Speaker 3: on top is just not going to help you play
- 7:35Speaker 3: better baseball. You're not going to play loose, you're not
- 7:38Speaker 3: going to do the things that you normally want to
- 7:40Speaker 3: do on the field. And a lot of times what
- 7:42Speaker 3: ends up happening is the player tries to do stuff
- 7:43Speaker 3: outside of their capability, and that's the worst thing you
- 7:46Speaker 3: want to see. One guy tries to take it upon
- 7:49Speaker 3: himself to get this team to the Promised Land, and
- 7:51Speaker 3: now all of a sudden, he's doing things that he
- 7:53Speaker 3: is not capable of doing. That's not why he's on
- 7:55Speaker 3: the team. And that's where it all really goes awry.
- 7:58Speaker 3: And we were talking about twenty team before that, and
- 8:00Speaker 3: it just kind of things just got so out of
- 8:03Speaker 3: hand so fast. There's really no one thing that we
- 8:06Speaker 3: can point to that it was a talented roster like
- 8:08Speaker 3: they have now. We have guys on the team that
- 8:10Speaker 3: had been to the playoffs, should have gotten us to
- 8:13Speaker 3: the playoffs, and things just went so wry, so fast,
- 8:16Speaker 3: and it was kind of our heads were spinning by
- 8:18Speaker 3: the time June came around. The season was over and
- 8:21Speaker 3: it was like, what in the world happened?
- 8:24Speaker 5: I want to get deeper with that, though, Brad, just
- 8:27Speaker 5: because there are similarities in this. You know, twenty eighteen,
- 8:32Speaker 5: the Orioles were two years removed from a playoff. In
- 8:36Speaker 5: twenty sixteen the wildcard round against the Blue Jays. Dan
- 8:40Speaker 5: Duquette added that offseason, remember bringing in Alex Cobb Andrew Kashner.
- 8:45Speaker 5: They're trying to win and this year you saw Michael
- 8:49Speaker 5: Lias make obviously plenty of win now moves.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Just both rosters had a ton of talent.
- 8:56Speaker 5: When did you realize things were not going to turn around?
- 9:00Speaker 4: Like?
- 9:00Speaker 5: What what transpired at that point? And going into the
- 9:04Speaker 5: year with plenty of expectations.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think I think we got off to
- 9:08Speaker 3: a good start, if I remember correctly, I think we
- 9:10Speaker 3: got off playing well and then we hit a skid,
- 9:12Speaker 3: like you know, seven in a row or six in
- 9:15Speaker 3: a row, and it just kind of after we got
- 9:18Speaker 3: to that point, it was kind of similar to what
- 9:20Speaker 3: you're seeing now. It was the one game that hit it.
- 9:23Speaker 3: The hitters would hit, but we wouldn't pitch, and then
- 9:25Speaker 3: the next game we would pitch and we wouldn't hit,
- 9:27Speaker 3: and then we'd get on a little bit of a
- 9:30Speaker 3: skid and the bullpens asked to come in and we'd
- 9:32Speaker 3: blow a lead.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Like it was just it was just one thing after another.
- 9:36Speaker 3: There were stretches where the offense would be really good
- 9:39Speaker 3: in our starting pitching struggle, and then we'd get leads
- 9:42Speaker 3: and the bullpen would blow it in the sixth, seventh, eighth,
- 9:44Speaker 3: ninth inning, and it was just one thing after another.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It was it was a wild year.
- 9:49Speaker 5: What was the clubhouse like? Like, what could the clubhouse
- 9:52Speaker 5: be experiencing right now? The modern day Orioles similar to
- 9:56Speaker 5: to them in the middle we were.
- 9:58Speaker 3: It was it was a team that really did didn't
- 10:00Speaker 3: like even when we were really good. It was like
- 10:03Speaker 3: you didn't know whether we won or we lost. When
- 10:05Speaker 3: you got in the clubhouse that team was just really
- 10:07Speaker 3: level headed and coming over from San Diego where we
- 10:10Speaker 3: celebrated every single win with like a disco ball, and
- 10:13Speaker 3: we didn't do that in Baltimore. I'm like, oh wow,
- 10:16Speaker 3: this is like it was very very professional. I guess
- 10:18Speaker 3: that's the best way to look at it. Guys that've
- 10:20Speaker 3: been around a while, so we just we expected to win.
- 10:23Speaker 3: And I think that was just a different kind of clubhouse.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I know, get teams do things different now, and uh,
- 10:28Speaker 3: there's nothing wrong with celebrating. It's hard to win a
- 10:30Speaker 3: big league, big league game. So with us, it was
- 10:32Speaker 3: like whether we win or we lost. We won or
- 10:35Speaker 3: we lost. It was never like too down or too high.
- 10:38Speaker 3: It was always like very eating keel And I think
- 10:40Speaker 3: that's one of the things that kind of when it
- 10:43Speaker 3: went bad, there was no like raw rah to kind
- 10:46Speaker 3: of shift things. It kind of just went bad and
- 10:49Speaker 3: it was just a slow, steady downhill fall and it
- 10:53Speaker 3: was Yeah, there was like it was just a weird
- 10:55Speaker 3: year because it couldn't point it, like you couldn't put
- 10:57Speaker 3: your finger on anything like why we were so bad
- 10:59Speaker 3: and why it got bad so fast, But it happened,
- 11:03Speaker 3: and it was one of those things that. I think
- 11:05Speaker 3: a lot of guys looking back, I wish we had
- 11:07Speaker 3: that season back.
- 11:09Speaker 1: So the Oriols twenty one and twenty nine today. One
- 11:11Speaker 1: of the vast differences in this game was the Raise
- 11:14Speaker 1: win two for four runners in scoring position. The Birds
- 11:17Speaker 1: went one for nine, so again just three runs for
- 11:20Speaker 1: the tenth time in thirteen games. So many facets underperforming.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Now being a media guy and giving stats like exit
- 11:28Speaker 1: velocities and spin rate, sometimes when the team is losing,
- 11:33Speaker 1: the people get tired of hearing that. They just want wins,
- 11:36Speaker 1: and I think mass and broadcaster Ben McDonald expressed some
- 11:41Speaker 1: of those frustrations. Today. We're going to get into that
- 11:44Speaker 1: Ben's comments and give our thoughts on it in a minute.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Here on Birdland Territory.
- 11:48Speaker 3: We love our dog Bella, who splays out in the
- 11:51Speaker 3: open sun on our floor like she's an underwear model.
- 11:54Speaker 2: And that's why we love her so much to scratch
- 11:56Speaker 2: her belly.
- 11:58Speaker 3: She's a cutie.
- 12:00Speaker 7: And a quick message from today's sponsor, the ASPCA Pet

- 12:50Speaker 1: Thanks for checking us out today on Bergland Territory Steve
- 12:53Speaker 1: Brad and Tim and So. After the game today, Ben
- 12:57Speaker 1: McDonald and this is Andy Coska's Twitter via the Baltimore Banner.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Ben on the postgame show, you either do or you don't.
- 13:05Speaker 1: And right now the Orioles don't. They are not doing it,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and they're not playing well right now. That's the bottom line.
- 13:10Speaker 1: But he said a little more than that tim which
- 13:13Speaker 1: I think we saw on social media too correct.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Yes, Ben said this.
- 13:18Speaker 5: We can talk about analytics and what could happen and
- 13:20Speaker 5: what should happen if you hit the ball hard.
- 13:23Speaker 4: But I don't care if you hit the ball hard.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I don't care.
- 13:25Speaker 5: If you hit it hard and you hit it to somebody,
- 13:27Speaker 5: you're out. I don't care how hard you throw ball four.
- 13:30Speaker 5: I don't care what your spin rate was on your
- 13:32Speaker 5: breaking ball. If you bounce it three feet in front
- 13:35Speaker 5: of home plate, I don't care. What I care about
- 13:38Speaker 5: is do you make plays? Do you make pitches? Do
- 13:40Speaker 5: you get hits when it matters? And that's what the
- 13:43Speaker 5: Orioles are struggling to do right now. They are struggling
- 13:46Speaker 5: to complete ball games. They're struggling to have all phases
- 13:50Speaker 5: of the game go right at the same time. That's
- 13:52Speaker 5: where the struggle is. So all this nonsense as I
- 13:55Speaker 5: watched to me about all this analytical stuff. You either
- 13:58Speaker 5: do or you don't, and right now the Orioles don't.
- 14:02Speaker 5: They are not doing it. They're not playing well right now.
- 14:05Speaker 5: That's the bottom line. And look Ben, much like what
- 14:10Speaker 5: Ken and I were doing on the fan, Like he
- 14:14Speaker 5: said those comments in the commercial break following the loss,
- 14:19Speaker 5: So there's not the frustration is there.
- 14:22Speaker 4: You're worked up. We're all worked.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Up, and it's the immediacy of that. And I think
- 14:28Speaker 5: Ben just having the front row seat to all of that,
- 14:31Speaker 5: he's a little fed up in terms of Ben old
- 14:35Speaker 5: school guy.
- 14:35Speaker 4: And then we're on overall pick in eighty nine.
- 14:38Speaker 5: You know, you do what you don't and Brad, just
- 14:41Speaker 5: from that perspective, and obviously you kind of got both
- 14:45Speaker 5: ends of it right where analytics weren't nearly as prevalent
- 14:49Speaker 5: at the beginning of your year of your career compared
- 14:52Speaker 5: to the end of it.
- 14:54Speaker 4: But what did you think of Ben's comments?
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he was just being honest.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I think he was staying he has to watch these
- 15:02Speaker 3: games and does the comment thing of all these games.
- 15:04Speaker 3: So I think he was just the frustration of watching
- 15:08Speaker 3: all this talent not perform up to the level that
- 15:10Speaker 3: the fans expected, that he expected, that the organization expected.
- 15:14Speaker 3: And I think he was just one of those frustrating
- 15:18Speaker 3: comments that came out. And I think Mel had a
- 15:21Speaker 3: good point about it with Cawser it was a ten
- 15:24Speaker 3: percent catch rate, and I think he had just had
- 15:26Speaker 3: enough of hearing all these spins on the season, and
- 15:30Speaker 3: all the analytics point to this and this. At the
- 15:32Speaker 3: end of the day, they're twenty one and twenty nine,
- 15:35Speaker 3: so it's they're eight games under five hundred. This team
- 15:37Speaker 3: is not even playing five hundred baseball right now. And
- 15:40Speaker 3: I think he was just being honest with what he
- 15:42Speaker 3: watches and what he deals with every day. And I
- 15:45Speaker 3: think if you're the players and you do hear that,
- 15:48Speaker 3: they're gonna they're not gonna be happy. I mean, they
- 15:50Speaker 3: just they think the guys that do TV, and after
- 15:53Speaker 3: doing a few TV games, I realize you just have
- 15:56Speaker 3: to see talk about what you saw in the field
- 16:00Speaker 3: and indifferent. It's your job to talk about what you saw.
- 16:04Speaker 3: And I think they just need to ignore it. I
- 16:06Speaker 3: think that he is very pro Orioles.
- 16:09Speaker 2: He is. He loves the players. He talks so highly
- 16:12Speaker 2: of these guys.
- 16:13Speaker 3: If you're gonna take one comment of his and run
- 16:15Speaker 3: with it and get pissed off about it, I think
- 16:17Speaker 3: you need to look in the mirror and look at
- 16:19Speaker 3: your own stats and see what you're doing on the field.
- 16:22Speaker 3: And I think that's just the kind of way to
- 16:23Speaker 3: go about it. I think they might not be happy
- 16:25Speaker 3: about it. But he's right. There's no other way to
- 16:29Speaker 3: talk about it. He's right about what he said. And
- 16:31Speaker 3: it's not about the analytics. It's not about how hard
- 16:33Speaker 3: you hit the ball. It's do you get base hits
- 16:36Speaker 3: and do you have wins? And I think watching the
- 16:38Speaker 3: Rays this series proves everything. They didn't hit the hardest balls,
- 16:41Speaker 3: but they got hits when they needed to, and they
- 16:43Speaker 3: scored runs with two outs and two strikes, and they
- 16:45Speaker 3: put the ball in play, and they won three games
- 16:47Speaker 3: in a row against the Orioles.
- 16:49Speaker 5: And bred that's the funny thing that the Rays entered
- 16:51Speaker 5: the series dead last and exit velocity.
- 16:54Speaker 4: They're one of the better offenses in baseball.
- 16:58Speaker 1: But here's the counterpoint to that. And I get bombarded
- 17:01Speaker 1: with analytics because when you do this every day. I
- 17:05Speaker 1: can remember a time when his former teammate Zach Britton
- 17:09Speaker 1: got traded to the Yankees, and here's what he said.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I remember to this day, a whole new world opened
- 17:15Speaker 1: up to me about all the data and analytics they
- 17:19Speaker 1: had that the Orioles weren't using at that time. And
- 17:22Speaker 1: that was a damning for me. That was tough to
- 17:25Speaker 1: read because it's like they can't outspend the Yankees. But
- 17:29Speaker 1: good grief, if the Nate their computers can be as
- 17:31Speaker 1: good as the Yankees and their data people. And I think,
- 17:34Speaker 1: did you and Zach ever talk about that?
- 17:36Speaker 3: Brad, Yeah, yeah, we did when he got to the
- 17:39Speaker 3: Yankees and I got to the Braves. It was kind
- 17:41Speaker 3: of we basically when I got to the Braves also,
- 17:44Speaker 3: it was like a week after him, it was just
- 17:46Speaker 3: kind of like sat me down, showed me all the
- 17:48Speaker 3: you know, as much data as they wanted to show me,
- 17:51Speaker 3: and basically just told me my fastball I wasn't using
- 17:53Speaker 3: my fastball up enough and that was kind of it.
- 17:55Speaker 3: After that, they were like, go do what you do,
- 17:57Speaker 3: use the fastball up. But then I got to see
- 17:59Speaker 3: Zaz talk to Zach and the Yankees just it was
- 18:02Speaker 3: way more. And I think it was just how difference
- 18:05Speaker 3: between me and Zach. I think it was just kind
- 18:07Speaker 3: of where we both were at our seasons in our careers.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Zach would loved a lot of the analytics stuff. I
- 18:12Speaker 3: was more of just a hey, show me what I
- 18:14Speaker 3: can use kind of just leave the other stuff out
- 18:16Speaker 3: because I kind of don't want to know everything. So
- 18:19Speaker 3: I think it was just maybe a difference between our
- 18:21Speaker 3: personalities and what we wanted.
- 18:23Speaker 2: But yes, when we.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Left the Orioles there was some stuff not on the
- 18:26Speaker 3: table that we didn't have all the cards that were
- 18:28Speaker 3: available to us.
- 18:30Speaker 1: And also keep this in mind, the team that leads
- 18:33Speaker 1: MLB and exit velocity is the New York Yankees, and
- 18:37Speaker 1: the team that's not far behind them is the Los
- 18:39Speaker 1: Angeles Dodgers. So it's a it's not a fallacy to say,
- 18:44Speaker 1: I guess what we're saying. Are the Orols too relying
- 18:47Speaker 1: on it? Is it getting in the way? Maybe it is.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Maybe it is, and that's for the team to analyze.
- 18:53Speaker 1: But teams are doing things well analytically and winning, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: so it's not like the Orols are outlier. No one
- 19:00Speaker 1: in baseball is trying to use some of this data.
- 19:03Speaker 1: But right now, I think fans are fed up with
- 19:06Speaker 1: hearing ex and velocity when they score three runs.
- 19:10Speaker 5: And I think my perspective of it, look where the
- 19:14Speaker 5: Orioles were in twenty eighteen, and that was a huge
- 19:16Speaker 5: reason why they brought in Michael ISAs as they were
- 19:19Speaker 5: so behind in the times when it came to analytics
- 19:22Speaker 5: and international and just so much infrastructure wise. I think
- 19:28Speaker 5: My opinion with it all is you need analytics, you
- 19:34Speaker 5: need to use it. Does it need to be the
- 19:37Speaker 5: end all be all? No, do you need to be
- 19:39Speaker 5: old school and ignore analytics.
- 19:41Speaker 4: No.
- 19:42Speaker 5: I think there needs to be the happy medium, right
- 19:45Speaker 5: like that. That's my perspective, and Brad, I'd love to
- 19:48Speaker 5: hear yours.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 3: No, I think it has its place, and I think
- 19:53Speaker 3: it's gone so far data driven now that I think
- 19:56Speaker 3: a lot of guys are so reliant on looking at
- 19:58Speaker 3: the numbers that they I get that they're really good
- 20:01Speaker 3: at what they do, and it's not because of the numbers.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Using it to your advantage is a different story. I
- 20:06Speaker 3: think using trying to find a certain thing that kind
- 20:09Speaker 3: of cracks the code to say, I think that's perfect.
- 20:12Speaker 2: But I think when you're sitting there.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Trying to just rely on it all the time, it's
- 20:16Speaker 3: really hard to go out there and play in real
- 20:18Speaker 3: life using stuff that's on a computer and data.
- 20:22Speaker 2: It has its place and is really good.
- 20:24Speaker 3: I just think it's really hard to find that happy medium,
- 20:27Speaker 3: and I think maybe that's what they're going throughight now.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Maybe you guys are stuck on using it too much
- 20:31Speaker 3: and going out there and using their feel and using
- 20:34Speaker 3: what they know is best.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I think there was a postgame comment from Craig alburn
- 20:39Speaker 1: As today that will get lost in the shuffle of
- 20:41Speaker 1: all the anger over another Royal loss, and I'm paraphrase,
- 20:45Speaker 1: I don't have it right in front of me. He
- 20:47Speaker 1: said something like we were a little passive. We didn't
- 20:49Speaker 1: go first to third on a couple of balls in
- 20:51Speaker 1: the outfield. Was basically saying, we've got to be more aggressive.
- 20:56Speaker 1: These things lead to wins. That's where you take the
- 20:58Speaker 1: data they have old school baseball. I know the center fielder,
- 21:02Speaker 1: his arm isn't great. I got to get the third
- 21:04Speaker 1: on that hit, and bunting a guy up and keeping
- 21:07Speaker 1: the lead double play in order. Those are the things
- 21:10Speaker 1: that have worked for a hundred years. And now you
- 21:13Speaker 1: take things that make you a better individual player on
- 21:15Speaker 1: the data whatever. And the Rays are doing that, and
- 21:18Speaker 1: the Oriels aren't right now, and the Orioles have all
- 21:21Speaker 1: this talent, but fans get tired of hearing about it.
- 21:24Speaker 1: And so what about albern AZ's comments. Was there a
- 21:27Speaker 1: hidden message to the lineup there?
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought he was.
- 21:32Speaker 3: I thought he was almost too calm the way he
- 21:34Speaker 3: was talking with the media, after it was like what,
- 21:37Speaker 3: he didn't take the loss super hard. He made a
- 21:39Speaker 3: comment about the loss basically sucking. There was no other
- 21:42Speaker 3: way to put it. He basically said it was just, yeah,
- 21:44Speaker 3: that really hurt today. But he was just pointing out
- 21:48Speaker 3: the little things to extend the lead. And I think
- 21:51Speaker 3: that's where a lot of these games are kind of
- 21:54Speaker 3: they have a chance to add on the run and
- 21:55Speaker 3: they strike out with guys second and third one out.
- 21:58Speaker 3: There was two innings there where the second and third
- 22:01Speaker 3: less than two outs and they didn't get a run
- 22:03Speaker 3: in to extend the lead. And I think that's where
- 22:05Speaker 3: a lot of these games are kind of being lost
- 22:07Speaker 3: by them right now, is when they have these leads
- 22:09Speaker 3: is extending and if you get a five run lead,
- 22:11Speaker 3: it's a way better than a three run leader or
- 22:13Speaker 3: a two run lead, And just those tack on runs
- 22:16Speaker 3: really paid dividends over a long season. And I think
- 22:19Speaker 3: that's what he's just kind of pointing out, is the
- 22:21Speaker 3: little things in the game that they're not doing at
- 22:23Speaker 3: the highest level is costing them these wins. I think
- 22:27Speaker 3: it was a message that we need to do the
- 22:29Speaker 3: little things better. And I think that's basically what he
- 22:31Speaker 3: was saying and saying in a very nice way, I thought,
- 22:36Speaker 3: and I.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Think it's it's more than just base running, right like,
- 22:39Speaker 5: it gets to the or defense that we've been talking
- 22:42Speaker 5: about for a while. And look at Colton Kowser. It
- 22:45Speaker 5: was a really tough play last night, but I think
- 22:47Speaker 5: he would say it's a play that he needed to
- 22:49Speaker 5: make where it went off his glove. And then today
- 22:52Speaker 5: just kind of kicking around the ball, or on Monday
- 22:56Speaker 5: with Trevor Rodgers Jeremiah Jackson having a ball go off
- 22:59Speaker 5: his glove. It's these little plays that add up to
- 23:05Speaker 5: these extra runs and ultimately losses.
- 23:10Speaker 1: If the Ools had won today, we'd be talking a
- 23:12Speaker 1: heck of a lot about Shane Boss. So we need
- 23:15Speaker 1: to note his performance and we will in a moment
- 23:18Speaker 1: here on Birdland Territory.
- 23:21Speaker 8: Big Bad Morning Show, Vinny and Haney, Inside Access Live

- 23:36Speaker 8: five seven the Fan.
- 23:39Speaker 1: So the tenth start of the year by Shane Bobs
- 23:41Speaker 1: as an oriol was his best. The Rais went two
- 23:44Speaker 1: for nineteen against him today and he had it all
- 23:48Speaker 1: going on back to back quality starts after he didn't
- 23:51Speaker 1: have one all year, so he's finally finding it, Brad.
- 23:54Speaker 1: They noted on the telecast that the break on his
- 23:59Speaker 1: knuckle curve, as that cast quantifies that pitch was lessened
- 24:04Speaker 1: sharp or tighter, almost looked like a slider, not a curb.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Did you see any of that? And it looks like
- 24:11Speaker 1: he made an adjustment today that worked for him.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it's he's doing definitely something a little different. I think,
- 24:17Speaker 3: once again going back to the day, he probably found
- 24:19Speaker 3: something that his curveball might have been jumping a little
- 24:22Speaker 3: bit higher and hitters are recognizing it more and they're
- 24:24Speaker 3: able to lay off it in the dirt. But he
- 24:26Speaker 3: was getting swings and missus at that pitch in the
- 24:28Speaker 3: dirt today, So there's definitely something a little different. And
- 24:31Speaker 3: he seems to be throwing a little bit more cutters
- 24:33Speaker 3: than he had been recently too, so maybe there's something
- 24:36Speaker 3: there too.
- 24:36Speaker 2: But he's looked really what. He's looked really great these
- 24:38Speaker 2: last couple of starts.
- 24:39Speaker 3: I think this is the pitcher they hoped to get
- 24:42Speaker 3: when he came over in the off season, So I
- 24:45Speaker 3: think he's getting starting to figure out what repertoire is
- 24:48Speaker 3: working best, and I think he's just kind of figure
- 24:50Speaker 3: out that pitch is harder to recognize from hitters because
- 24:54Speaker 3: I think the curbball is either sometimes, especially throw knuckle
- 24:56Speaker 3: cerber has a tendency to pop out of the hand,
- 24:58Speaker 3: and that's what pitchers do know a loile when they
- 25:00Speaker 3: throw a curveball, as you see a little bit of pop,
- 25:03Speaker 3: Hitters can recognize that immediately. They can either eliminate it
- 25:06Speaker 3: and take it for a ball, or if it's something
- 25:08Speaker 3: the zone, they know it's a good pitch to hit.
- 25:09Speaker 3: So I think maybe just that little bit of a thing.
- 25:12Speaker 3: But I did hear them talk about how the spin
- 25:14Speaker 3: rate was actually down too, but they seem to be
- 25:16Speaker 3: taking worse swings on it.
- 25:17Speaker 2: So it's always interesting.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I think that is the interesting part of data and
- 25:22Speaker 3: all the analytics that they have is kind of just
- 25:24Speaker 3: seeing these little tweaks and stuff like that that just
- 25:27Speaker 3: because you spin the ball really well, it doesn't mean
- 25:29Speaker 3: it's going to be a better pitch, and the break
- 25:31Speaker 3: is more doesn't mean it's a more swing and miss pitch.
- 25:34Speaker 2: It's always interesting to me to hear that kind of stuff.
- 25:37Speaker 5: It's definitely been very encouraging seeing back to beck starts
- 25:40Speaker 5: by Shane Bose and against quality opponents too. And I
- 25:44Speaker 5: know the Nats aren't having a great season, but that's
- 25:46Speaker 5: a really, really good offense. His last time out, he
- 25:48Speaker 5: threw a career high one hundred and eight pitches. You
- 25:51Speaker 5: could tell that he really wanted to finish that seventh
- 25:54Speaker 5: inning there. And this start, guys, I thought was really
- 25:57Speaker 5: interesting because the pitch count was up in the first
- 26:05Speaker 5: cup able to kind of settle in and end up
- 26:08Speaker 5: retiring the eleven straight batters to finish that start, So
- 26:12Speaker 5: really encouraging stuff.
- 26:13Speaker 4: At a chick Shane Bok forty.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Seven pitches in the first two innings, forty seven in
- 26:18Speaker 1: the last four. So that was a really nice turnaround.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Now here you're talking about rough stats, here's a rough
- 26:25Speaker 1: one for the offense. It shows you they got to
- 26:27Speaker 1: get it going. Three runs are less four and twenty one.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Five runs are more sixteen and five. Is that asking
- 26:35Speaker 1: too much to get five runs? It's the best scoring
- 26:38Speaker 1: teams in baseball average five runs, So I think the
- 26:42Speaker 1: offense has to start to do this. If they had
- 26:45Speaker 1: scored five or six today, they might win this ball game.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's you know what it is. It's a
- 26:52Speaker 3: lot of the home runs we're starting to see. I
- 26:54Speaker 3: feel like they've all been solo homers. They just haven't
- 26:57Speaker 3: had guys on base when they're doing damage, and it
- 26:59Speaker 3: just kind.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Of one of those things where it's all just kind
- 27:02Speaker 2: of adding.
- 27:03Speaker 3: I feel like the offensive players individually have been getting
- 27:06Speaker 3: better the you know, sorry, Henderson looks way better recently.
- 27:13Speaker 2: You know, obviously Adley's doing what he's been doing.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Pete had a great series, but it's just not lining
- 27:18Speaker 3: up together. They're not getting two of them doing it
- 27:20Speaker 3: at the same time. Taylor Ward with the home run,
- 27:23Speaker 3: that's encouraging. I think the wrists or hand or whatever
- 27:25Speaker 3: he was dealing with is starting to seem better. He's
- 27:28Speaker 3: hitting the ball harder. That home run yesterday was crushed.
- 27:31Speaker 3: So it's it's just kind of not lining up together.
- 27:34Speaker 3: And I think that's the other disappointing, frustrating part of
- 27:38Speaker 3: all this is that they're not getting the guys kind
- 27:40Speaker 3: of doing it at the same time.
- 27:41Speaker 2: So it's just.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Kind of, I don't know, it's kind of had a
- 27:45Speaker 3: loss of words, really, when with this offense is expected
- 27:48Speaker 3: to do all this damage and score these runs, and
- 27:50Speaker 3: you see that stat. That's a lot of games to
- 27:53Speaker 3: be scoring three runs or less.
- 27:55Speaker 1: A lot of games. Now, quick quick question for me,
- 27:57Speaker 1: run out of time. A lot of criticism on my
- 28:00Speaker 1: feeds late in the game where he didn't go left
- 28:03Speaker 1: on left against Iran, the late he only had ake
- 28:06Speaker 1: and and ends. He pitched Nunez, who, by the way,
- 28:10Speaker 1: is one fifty nine against left. He's been good against
- 28:13Speaker 1: both sides batters. Did Albernas make a mistake of not
- 28:18Speaker 1: matching up left on left leading three to one with
- 28:22Speaker 1: the al RBI leader in the box?
- 28:27Speaker 3: I would say, I don't think so, because Nunia has
- 28:30Speaker 3: been his eighth inning guy with the lead in the
- 28:32Speaker 3: since Helson has been on the DL.
- 28:33Speaker 2: So I think it's just yeah, I don't. I don't
- 28:36Speaker 2: think he made a mistake.
- 28:37Speaker 3: I think you just he had those He has had
- 28:39Speaker 3: those guys slot at eight nine, Rico Garcia and Nunez
- 28:43Speaker 3: anytime they've had a lead. And I just don't think
- 28:45Speaker 3: you you turned from that. If he brings in a
- 28:47Speaker 3: lefty and he gives up hits that everybody's gonna be
- 28:49Speaker 3: talking about, Oh, why didn't they pitch Nunez. He's been
- 28:51Speaker 3: their eighth inning guy the whole time. I've just always
- 28:53Speaker 3: have been a big believer. You stick with those rules,
- 28:56Speaker 3: especially late in the game. Tyler Wills is pitching way better.
- 28:59Speaker 3: He is your eighth inning guy right now. I think
- 29:02Speaker 3: I think him and Nunez could go back and forth,
- 29:04Speaker 3: whether you know, depending on who's coming out. But I
- 29:06Speaker 3: don't think he made a mistake using Yunyaz there. He's
- 29:08Speaker 3: been his guy in the thinning. He has a lot
- 29:09Speaker 3: of trust in him.
- 29:12Speaker 4: Yeah, and Garcia he's the high leverage guy. No, I
- 29:16Speaker 4: agree with Brad. I just think that that's kind of
- 29:18Speaker 4: the role that he's been in.
- 29:20Speaker 5: And look, you expect Nunez and Garcia with the two
- 29:23Speaker 5: run lead in the eighth inning, that they're going to
- 29:25Speaker 5: get the job done a heck of a lot more
- 29:27Speaker 5: often than none.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Bullpen gave up fourteen runs and nine innings in Tampa.
- 29:32Speaker 1: A lot of that was Monday night, but the all
- 29:34Speaker 1: three games had some moments that were not great. So
- 29:37Speaker 1: that where do they go from here? What are you
- 29:40Speaker 1: guys thinking we're going to see here during an upcoming
- 29:43Speaker 1: nine game homestand.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Hopefully more than five runs and start getting some outs
- 29:49Speaker 3: to start getting the third out of the inning, get
- 29:53Speaker 3: out of these innings. They gave up sixteen to two
- 29:55Speaker 3: out runs this series, and it just seems to be
- 29:58Speaker 3: this this. I think that just keeps going on this season.
- 30:01Speaker 3: So I'm hoping to see some more offense at home.
- 30:03Speaker 3: It's starting to warm up in Baltimore. Ball is going
- 30:06Speaker 3: to start flying, get some guys on base and have
- 30:08Speaker 3: some big home runs as opposed to be sol Horns,
- 30:11Speaker 3: and just get the starting pitching going again. I think
- 30:13Speaker 3: these last two starts are encouraging, and I think the
- 30:15Speaker 3: offense needs to see if we can score four runs,
- 30:17Speaker 3: five runs with our starting pitching.
- 30:19Speaker 2: We got a shot.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Gotta get back on track, and it starts with this
- 30:24Speaker 5: weekend against the Tigers. You know, heading into taping tonight,
- 30:27Speaker 5: they've lost fourteen of sixteen games, so they're really really
- 30:31Speaker 5: scuffling coming in. You gotta take that series. Then the
- 30:34Speaker 5: Rays come to town. But hey, you can go back
- 30:37Speaker 5: a couple of weeks. The Orioles got blown out in
- 30:40Speaker 5: that four game series in the Bronx. They ended up
- 30:42Speaker 5: coming back and winning the series when the Yankees came
- 30:45Speaker 5: to Baltimore, so it wouldn't be unheard of for them
- 30:48Speaker 5: to rebound in that way at Camden Yards.
- 30:52Speaker 1: We don't hear billing at Camden Yards often, but we've
- 30:55Speaker 1: heard it a little bit this year. And the fans
- 30:57Speaker 1: are so henry right now that if this team he's
- 31:00Speaker 1: an egg this weekend, some people might express themselves. So
- 31:03Speaker 1: it's up to the Orioles, the entire organization from top
- 31:07Speaker 1: to bottom, to start doing better and give us more
- 31:10Speaker 1: exciting things to talk about and calm the fans' nerves
- 31:14Speaker 1: a little bit, because everybody's kind of frazzled and frayed
- 31:16Speaker 1: tonight in Birdland because of this sweep by the Rays.
- 31:21Speaker 1: That'll do it for our show thanks to Brad and Tim.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I'm Steve Muleski. Will catch you next time on Birdland
- 31:27Speaker 1: Territory
