- 0:00Chapter six. Krishna, therefore, who doeth work rightful to do, not
- 0:08seeking gain from work? That man o prince is Sanyasi and Yogi, both
- 0:14in one, and he is neither who lights not the flame of sacrifice,
- 0:19nor setteth hand to task. Regard as true renouncer him that makes worship by
- 0:26work, For who renounceth not works, not as Yogin, so is that
- 0:32well said by works, the votary doth rise to saint, and saintship is
- 0:37the ceasing from all works. Because the perfect Yogin acts, but acts unmoved
- 0:43by passions and unbound by deeds, setting result aside. Let each man raise
- 0:50the self by soul, not trample down his self, since soul that is
- 0:55self's friend, may grow self's foe. Soul is self's friend when self doth
- 1:00rule over self, but self turns enemy. If soul's own self hate self
- 1:07as not itself. The sovereign soul of him, who live, self governed
- 1:14and at peace, is centered in itself, taking alike pleasure and pain,
- 1:19heat, cold, glory and shame. He is the Yogi. He is
- 1:25Yukta, glad with joy of light and truth, dwelling apart upon a peak,
- 1:30with senses subjugate. Where to the cloud, the rock, the glistering
- 1:36gold, show all as one. By this sign is he known, being
- 1:41of equal grace to comrades, friends, chance comers, strangers, lovers,
- 1:46enemies, aliens and kinsmen, loving all alike, evil or good sequestered.
- 1:53Should he sit steadfastly, meditating, solitary, his thoughts controlled, his passions
- 2:00laid away, quit of belongings, in a fair still spot, having his
- 2:06fixed abode not too much raised, nor yet too low. Let him abide
- 2:12his goods a cloth, a deer skin, and the cusa grass. There,
- 2:16setting heart his mind upon the one restraining heart and senses, silent calm.
- 2:23Let him accomplish yoga and achieve pureness of soul, holding immovable body and
- 2:30neck and head, his gaze absorbed upon his nose, end wrapped from all
- 2:37around, tranquil in spirit, free of fear, intent upon his Brahmacharya,
- 2:43vow devout, musing on me, lost in the thought of me, that
- 2:49Yogan so devoted, so controlled, comes to the piece beyond my peace,
- 2:54the peace of high Nirvana. But for earth needs religion. Is not his
- 3:01who too much fasts or too much feasts, nor his who sleeps away in
- 3:07idle mind, nor his who wears to waste his strength and vigils. Nay
- 3:13Arjuna call that the true piety which most removes earth, aches and ills.
- 3:19Where one is moderate in eating and in resting, and in sport, measured
- 3:23in wish and act, sleeping betimes, waking betimes for duty. When the
- 3:30man so living centers on his soul the thought straightly, restrained, untouched internally
- 3:38by stress of sense, then is he yuctah see steadfast a lamp burns sheltered
- 3:45from the wind. Such is the likeness of the jogi's mind, shut from
- 3:50sense, storms in burning bright to heaven. When mind broods placid, soothed
- 3:55with holy want, when self contemplates self and in itself hath comfort when it
- 4:02knows the nameless joy beyond all scope of sense, revealed to soul only to
- 4:09soul, and knowing wavers not true to the farther truth. When holding this,
- 4:16it deems no other treasure comparable. But harbored there cannot be stirred or
- 4:23shook by any gravest grief. Call that state peace, that happy severance yoga.
- 4:30Call that man the perfect yogin steadfastly the will must toil thereto till efforts
- 4:38end in ease, and thought has passed from thinking, shaking off all longings
- 4:45bred by dreams of fame and gain, shutting the doorways of the senses close
- 4:49with watchful ward. So step by step it comes to gift of peace assured
- 4:57and heart assuaged, when the mind mind dwell, self wrapped, and the
- 5:01soul broods cumberless. But as often as the heart breaks wild and wavering from
- 5:09control, so often let him recurb it, let him rein it back to
- 5:14the soul's governance. For perfect bliss grows only in the bosom, tranquilized,
- 5:20the spirit, passionless, purged from a fence, vowed to the infinite,
- 5:26He who thus vows his soul to the supreme soul, quitting sin, passes
- 5:31unhindered to the enlistless of unity with Brahma. He so vowed, so blended,
- 5:40sees the life's soul resident in all things living, and all living things
- 5:45in that life's soul contained. And whoso thus discerneth me in all and all
- 5:50in me, I never let him go, nor looseneth he hold upon me,
- 5:57but dwell where he may what his life in me? He dwells and
- 6:01lives because he knows and worships me, who dwell in all which lives,
- 6:08and cleaves to me in all, Arjuna. If a man sees everywhere taught
- 6:14by his own similitude, one life, one essence, and the evil and
- 6:18the good, hold him a yogi yea well perfected Arjuna, slayer of Madu.
- 6:28Yet again this yog this peace derived from equanimity made known by THEE.
- 6:33I see no fixity therein no rest, because the heart of men is unfixed.
- 6:40Krishna rash tumultuous, wilful, and strong. It were all one,
- 6:45I think to hold the wayward wind as tame man's heart. Krishna hero long
- 6:53armed beyond denial. Hard man's heart is to restrain and wavering. Yet may
- 7:00it grow restrained by habit, Prince, by want of self command? This
- 7:04yogi, I say, cometh not lightly to the ungoverned ones. But he
- 7:10who will be master of himself shall win it if he stoutly strive there too,
- 7:16Arjuna, In what road goeth he who, having faith fails Krishna in
- 7:24the striving, falling back from holiness, missing the perfect rule? Is he
- 7:29not lost straying from Brahma's light. Like the vain cloud which floats TwixT earth
- 7:34and heaven, when lightning splits it and it vanisheth. Fain would I hear
- 7:40thee answer me herein, Since Krishna, none save thou, can clear the
- 7:44doubt. Krishna, he is not lost, Thou, son of Prita.
- 7:49No nor earth nor heaven is forfeit even for him, because no heart that
- 7:56holds one right desire treadeth the road of law. He who should fail desiring
- 8:03righteousness cometh at death unto the region of the just, dwells there measureless years,
- 8:09and being born anew, beginneth life again in some fair home amid the
- 8:15mild and happy. It may chance he doth descend into a yogan's house on
- 8:20Virtue's breast, but that is rare. Such birth is hard to be obtained
- 8:24on this earth. Chief, so hath he back again what heights of heart
- 8:30he did achieve, And so he strives anew to perfectness with better hope,
- 8:35Dear Prince, for by the old desire he is drawn on unwittingly and only
- 8:41to desire. The purity of yoga is to pass beyond the Shabdebrahm, the
- 8:46spoken vade. But being Yogi, striving strong and long, purged from transgressions,
- 8:54perfected by births. Following on births, he plants his feet at last
- 8:58upon the farther path. Such an one ranks above ascetics, higher than the
- 9:03wise, beyond achievers of vast deeds, be thou Yogi Arjuna, And of
- 9:11such believe truest and best is he who worships me with inmost soul stayed on
- 9:18my mystery. Here endeth Chapter six
