- 0:00Good morning, family.
- 0:17Here we start.
- 0:23Reckon the men.
- 0:24That's what we're doing.
- 0:25We're just warning you up front, gentlemen.
- 0:27It's on you.
- 0:28Today is talking about biblical manhood.
- 0:32We are, as you know, we're going through this year about what it means to be a biblical
- 0:38man and a biblical woman, and really excited about this opportunity.
- 0:44So we are not going to get through the whole chapter I was planning to, but it's just not
- 0:53going to happen.
- 0:54As you know, if I don't finish over there, I'm not going to finish over here.
- 0:59So either way, you're in for a good reckoning.
- 1:05Women that doesn't mean that you're going to be out of the limelight.
- 1:13Yours is in chapter two.
- 1:15But either way, there's things in the sermon that every believer should take.
- 1:23That being said, I hope you're ready for a ride.
- 1:27So God's been wrecking me too.
- 1:29So Father, I want to thank you so much for your word.
- 1:33Thank you that it is living inactive.
- 1:35Lord, that you have called us as men to rightly divide it.
- 1:39Lord, as men, as ministers who stand behind the pulpits, I pray that we would rightly
- 1:46divide it, that we would teach and preach the full counsel of your word, that you would
- 1:51be honored and glorified, and that, Lord, that you would be high and lifted up.
- 1:58Help us as men to understand the importance of what it means to be men of God, and that
- 2:05we would take this responsibility, this call of the most serious, and that this responsibility
- 2:16and call has been placed upon us to lead.
- 2:20So to you, be honor and glory the example of how to love your bride, how to care for
- 2:27your children, and how to lead and walk as not only as a servant, but as an example and
- 2:33a model for others to follow.
- 2:35To you be honor and glory in Jesus' name.
- 2:39Amen.
- 2:40So let's read.
- 2:44First Timothy chapter one, Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior
- 2:50and of Christ Jesus our hope.
- 2:52To Timothy, my true child in the faith, grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and
- 3:00Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 3:02As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain
- 3:10persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless
- 3:19genealogies which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.
- 3:27The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and
- 3:33a sincere faith.
- 3:35Certain persons by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring
- 3:42to be teachers of the law without understanding either what they are saying or the things
- 3:49about which they make confident assertions.
- 3:53Now we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully.
- 3:59Understanding this, the law is not laid down for the just, but for the lawless and disobedient,
- 4:06for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for the disobedient, for those
- 4:13who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, for sexually immoral, men who practice
- 4:19homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine
- 4:27in accordance with the gospel of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
- 4:33I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful,
- 4:41appointing me to his service.
- 4:43Though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent, but I received mercy
- 4:50because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me
- 4:56with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
- 5:01The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance that Christ Jesus came into
- 5:06the world to save sinners, to whom I am the foremost.
- 5:11But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might
- 5:17display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal
- 5:25life.
- 5:26To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and
- 5:33ever.
- 5:34Amen.
- 5:35This charge I entrusted to you, Timothy my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously
- 5:40made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, upholding the faith and
- 5:48a good conscience.
- 5:50By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenus and
- 5:57Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
- 6:06There's a lot of stuff in here, so we will get through the first half.
- 6:11Okay?
- 6:12Here's principle number one.
- 6:14Men of God are fully committed to sound doctrine and the stewardship of the gospel and are
- 6:21careful to teach and proclaim the truth of God's word.
- 6:27Men of God are fully committed to sound doctrine, to the stewardship of the gospel and to carefully
- 6:34teach and proclaim the truth of God's word.
- 6:39This is especially for pastors.
- 6:41Timothy was roughly between 18, 19, some would say maybe 17 or 16, but probably no older
- 6:50than 20.
- 6:52If you want to know when this letter was written, easy, you just go to Acts chapter 17 to 20
- 6:58and it was during Paul's missionary journeys to Greece and to Macedonia and to Ephesus.
- 7:07It's there that he meets with Timothy, a young man who has been called to the ministry who
- 7:13they have taught, who he has taught personally, sound doctrine.
- 7:18Can you imagine a young man younger than Owen preaching and teaching and shepherding an
- 7:25entire church in the city of Ephesus?
- 7:29It is quite remarkable.
- 7:32That being said, because he was taught sound doctrine and he was laid on his hands and
- 7:38he was given the responsibility to preach and teach the word of God, the gospel, he
- 7:44had all that he needed, the Holy Spirit, the God in him, and all the work that was given
- 7:51to him to do.
- 7:52Now, what's interesting is as we go and you continue to read these letters, Paul does
- 7:57not lay off Timothy too much.
- 8:01He reminds him over and over again what a man of God looks like.
- 8:06He would need that.
- 8:07So that being said, this is what it says, do your best to present yourself to God as
- 8:14one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
- 8:20Second Timothy 2.15, do we as men of God, each and every man in this room, handle the
- 8:27word of God properly?
- 8:29Or do we just speak whatever we want in order to tickle the ears of our wives or our children
- 8:34because we want them to know it's okay, you're amazing?
- 8:39No, we want to teach them good sound truth, which interesting, Paul then clarifies even
- 8:46later in this chapter of which he is the worst.
- 8:51Do we really deal with the issue of the sinfulness of our being that our wonderful little ones
- 8:56are innocent though not innocent, declared guilty because of our nature?
- 9:02No, God reminds us of his holiness and that's what you're going to see here.
- 9:08In 1 Timothy 1, 3 through 7 he says this to Timothy, I urge you, I beseech you, I am commanding
- 9:16you.
- 9:18When I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge, command certain persons
- 9:28not to teach any different doctrine.
- 9:31So I know when I preach or I teach or when men of God preach and teach it's difficult
- 9:36sometimes because we have a tendency to come off very not nice, but we don't have an option
- 9:42sometimes, many times actually, that when certain men or women who claim to be pastors
- 9:52of God teach something that's contrary to the word.
- 9:57This is Paul's command to Timothy.
- 10:02You do not allow these men to teach.
- 10:06You charge them not to teach any different doctrine.
- 10:14That's the standard.
- 10:17Theology matters, doctrine matters, truth matters.
- 10:21What's interesting about this, certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, it means
- 10:27to deviate from the truth.
- 10:30Just a little turn away from the truth of the word of God is a complete deviation.
- 10:36It doesn't matter how small you think it is.
- 10:40This is not an option here.
- 10:43Those men should not teach.
- 10:46Instead, they devote themselves to myths and genealogies.
- 10:53That's their teaching.
- 10:55They come up with these myths and genealogies about who is really important in the kingdom
- 11:02of God and all these other things that they teach.
- 11:06You can imagine how many other gospels were coming out, the gospel of Mary and all these
- 11:11other things that people were talking about at the time.
- 11:16These particular men were talking about the myths and then this genealogies concerning
- 11:20the law as if they knew something.
- 11:23It's terrible.
- 11:25Are we as men willing to say, no, you can't teach that?
- 11:31At least here in this church, we do.
- 11:36There's an expectation to teach sound doctrine.
- 11:39It's one of the reasons why we go through the qualifications and the work of proving
- 11:44out these men.
- 11:47There's a reason why, for example, that Owen has been under our leadership for the past
- 11:53going on a year soon.
- 11:56We need to know that he handles the word of God well and that he is purposed in his life
- 12:00to continue to grow in true faith and not to deviate from the gospel.
- 12:04But these men that he's talking about here do.
- 12:08So as men of God, are you willing to say, no?
- 12:12What happens when you devote yourself to myths and endless genealogies to false doctrine?
- 12:20It promotes speculations.
- 12:22Zaitasis is the word here.
- 12:25It means to dispute or question.
- 12:29I can't help but to think how much dispute and questioning has been brought up into the
- 12:34church as a result of the false gospels of the church.
- 12:40Instead of teaching the full gospel of Christ, there's this drive to make Jesus more palatable.
- 12:48Jesus doesn't want to be palatable to you.
- 12:51He wants you to understand the truth that can save your lives.
- 12:58So do we teach things that aren't sound and as a result create dispute and question?
- 13:07Those myths and endless genealogies rather than the stewardship, rather than the knowledge
- 13:14of the things by which God has provided for and prepared salvation, which is by faith
- 13:21alone.
- 13:22Do we steward the gospel and all that is contained in it?
- 13:28All the doctrines that you can imagine that God has concerning salvation is solidly foundational
- 13:36in the gospel.
- 13:40And this particular stewardship of the gospel is from God that is by faith.
- 13:47Only salvation is by faith alone, in Christ alone.
- 13:55There is no other gospel.
- 13:58Verse five, the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience
- 14:05and a sincere faith.
- 14:07That's our aim.
- 14:08That's our goal.
- 14:09Our goal to command is out of love for you, is what Paul is saying to Timothy.
- 14:17My heart is pure for you, Timothy.
- 14:20Timothy is young.
- 14:22He's a young man.
- 14:23He must place his feet on the rock and not deviate.
- 14:30Sincere faith.
- 14:32Certain persons by swerving from these doctrines have wandered away into vain discussion.
- 14:40The word here is mataiya lagia, mataiya lagia.
- 14:46This word is empty talk.
- 14:48They just blabber.
- 14:50They talk about nonsense.
- 14:51It just doesn't matter.
- 14:54Why?
- 14:55They're desiring to be teachers of the law without understanding either what they are
- 14:59saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
- 15:04It reminds me so many of these false teachers who just talk just to talk.
- 15:11And we throw our money and our time at them.
- 15:13What kind of men are they?
- 15:14They're not men.
- 15:15They're not even boys.
- 15:17Men of God live obediently and purpose to walk with Christ continually.
- 15:24So if we are committed to Christ, if we are living in such a way that we are holding to
- 15:31sound doctrine, we are stewarding the gospel, we are careful to teach and proclaim God's
- 15:36word, are you living obediently for others to see that you would be a model of that?
- 15:45And do you purpose personally to continue to walk with Christ every single day or is
- 15:51he just a Sunday God for you?
- 15:54Are you truly a Jesus freak?
- 15:58I know a modern group brought that term up, but do you love him supremely that nothing
- 16:07else matters but him and him alone?
- 16:12Men of God live obediently and purpose to walk with Christ continually.
- 16:16Here it is, men, you ready?
- 16:18Be watchful, men.
- 16:20Your responsibility is to guard.
- 16:23Watchful.
- 16:25Pay attention.
- 16:26Watch.
- 16:27Listen.
- 16:29Stand firm in the faith.
- 16:31Do not waver from the gospel.
- 16:33Do not waver from the sound doctrine of the word of God.
- 16:37Notice what he says here in 1 Corinthians, chapter 16, verse 13 and 14.
- 16:41You're welcome to turn there if you want, but this is what he says, be watchful, stand
- 16:46firm in the faith, act like men.
- 16:49You're not a woman.
- 16:51You're a man.
- 16:52Act like it.
- 16:53Thank you.
- 16:54Told you this was going to be a little hard on you guys.
- 17:00That does not mean that men cannot be gentle.
- 17:02Jesus was gentle and tender, but there was not a greater man.
- 17:06No one took my life from me.
- 17:08I lay it down of my own accord.
- 17:10That's what a man does.
- 17:12Act like men.
- 17:14Be strong.
- 17:16Let all that you do be done in love.
- 17:20Act like men.
- 17:22Partner in your households.
- 17:25Be men in your homes.
- 17:27Be men here.
- 17:28Why do I say that?
- 17:30I'm thankful.
- 17:31Jerry, I'm going to use you as an example.
- 17:34You're a man, my brother.
- 17:36You are a man of God, my friend.
- 17:39He gets the men to work and help, but I'm going to be honest with you, you can do a
- 17:44heck of a lot more.
- 17:45These women outwork you all day long, and they should not.
- 17:50You shouldn't be dependent on the ladies fellowship to do everything, but thankfully our men are
- 17:56starting to step up, but it requires that we act like men.
- 18:00We lead.
- 18:02We do.
- 18:04How can I do?
- 18:05How can I say that confidently?
- 18:07Because I lead.
- 18:10Act like men.
- 18:13Be strong.
- 18:15Let all that you do be done in love.
- 18:18What is the motivation of every godly man?
- 18:22Love for Christ, love for his people.
- 18:26Act like men.
- 18:30Here's the difference in this verses eight through 10.
- 18:32There are two clear differences here.
- 18:35Men who are men and men who are not.
- 18:38Verse eight.
- 18:39Now, we know that the law is good.
- 18:42That's true it is.
- 18:44If one uses it lawfully.
- 18:46The problem is none of us can.
- 18:49Only Jesus has used the law lawfully.
- 18:52Only Jesus has fulfilled the law perfectly.
- 18:56And as a result of Christ doing that for us on our behalf, we fulfill the law through him.
- 19:02Praise God because without him it's impossible.
- 19:06But understand this.
- 19:09That the law is not laid down for the just.
- 19:12Do you hear that?
- 19:14If you're in Christ you have been justified.
- 19:17In Christ you are made just.
- 19:21In Christ.
- 19:22But apart from Christ you are not just.
- 19:26So the law has been laid down for the unjust.
- 19:31For the lawless and disobedient.
- 19:33For the ungodly and sinners.
- 19:36For the unholy and profane.
- 19:39For those who strike their fathers and mothers.
- 19:42For murderers, the sexually immoral.
- 19:45Men who practice homosexuality.
- 19:47Enslavors.
- 19:49Those men who steal men and women and children to put into service.
- 19:57Liars.
- 19:58Perjurers.
- 19:59And whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine.
- 20:03By God's grace this country still exists.
- 20:07And we are a godly country.
- 20:09We've enslaved children.
- 20:12Or we ignored it.
- 20:13That is not godly.
- 20:16And nothing will change until the men of God stand firm on sound doctrine and call out
- 20:22the false teachers.
- 20:24Or those who claim that they know better.
- 20:27But we who are the just live in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed
- 20:34God with which I have been entrusted.
- 20:37God has entrusted you with the most precious, most expensive, costly thing.
- 20:46The gospel of his son.
- 20:49That's what you have as men.
- 20:51Men have been entrusted with things.
- 20:54This is the responsibility that we hold.
- 20:56The gospel.
- 20:57There is no other gospel that Christ the God man came, put on flesh, died on the cross,
- 21:04was buried and rose again on the third day to give us life and that he has commanded
- 21:07us to teach all things concerning him and to be obedient.
- 21:12That's what he's told us.
- 21:13That's the gospel.
- 21:14There is no other gospel.
- 21:15And God has entrusted you men with that.
- 21:18So these two very important principles.
- 21:22To be committed to sound doctrine and the stewardship of the gospel.
- 21:25To be careful to teach and proclaim the full truth of God's word.
- 21:29To live obediently and purpose to walk with Christ continually every day.
- 21:35That is the beginning and the foundations of leadership.
- 21:39As men act like men.
- 21:43Over the next week and the week after we'll be dealing with the rest of the chapter.
- 21:48And when you look at what Paul's life was before Christ saved him.
- 21:53It's quite remarkable that God, he says this.
- 21:57I'll give you a little bone because I didn't do this in verse but I'm going to give you
- 22:01a little something to look forward to.
- 22:05Specifically in 2 Peter 3, 9.
- 22:08Do you remember that?
- 22:11What's 2 Peter 3, 9 say?
- 22:15God is patient not willing that any should perish but all should come to repentance.
- 22:19That's exactly what Paul says here Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example
- 22:28to those who were to believe in him.
- 22:33It is about election.
- 22:36He is patient.
- 22:38He was patient with Paul and he's patient with us.
- 22:43His people will come and they will come through and by the gospel through faith alone in Christ
- 22:51alone.
- 22:53By grace alone.
- 22:56There is no other way.
- 22:57It is a very skinny road.
- 23:01And be honest with you I think it's like a path like I don't even think it's a road I
- 23:05think it's like a trail.
- 23:09Not a two lane trail like one trail.
- 23:11If you had a mountain bike you might be able to get through a little faster maybe.
- 23:19So I hope this has been a challenge to you as men to be men.
- 23:25Act like men and we'll pick up next week.
- 23:30Father I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness.
- 23:31Thank you Lord for your word.
- 23:33Thank you Lord for this opportunity to challenge the men to come to live to to take on the
- 23:40responsibility as men and to love you supremely so they can love their wives and their children.
- 23:49That you reign in their hearts and in their lives as King and as God and as Savior.
- 23:56We praise you and thank you in Jesus name.
- 23:57Amen.
