Transcript
- 0:00Hi, I'm Dr. Jeffrey Gladden. I was born in 1954.
- 0:02That technically would make me 72,
- 0:04but I wake up 27 every day. I'm an avid mountain biker,
- 0:07snowboarder, surfer, runner. I do anything I want to do.
- 0:11Let me tell you a little bit about how I go about my day and how I have
- 0:15a protocol that keeps me living young for a lifetime.
- 0:18He went from saving hearts as a cardiologist to rewriting the entire aging playbook.
- 0:24Dr. Jeffrey Gladden believes 100 is the new 30,
- 0:27and he's got the science to back it up.
- 0:29This is the Gladden Longevity Podcast.
- 0:34My daily protocol. First, I don't wake up to an alarm.
- 0:37When I quit cardiology, I stop waking up to an alarm.
- 0:40That was a gift to myself. So I don't wake up to an alarm.
- 0:43I sleep as long as my body needs to sleep.
- 0:45Two, the first thing I do when I get up is I take my thyroid medication.
- 0:48It takes about 30 minutes to be absorbed.
- 0:51During that 30 minutes, I sit down and I journal.
- 0:53And I put down three things that I'm grateful for,
- 0:55three things that I want to accomplish in that day that would make the day great.
- 1:00And then a couple of affirmations about how I'm going to show up that day.
- 1:04Sometimes those reflections are actually very pragmatic and sometimes they're very
- 1:08deep, spiritual, very abstract almost in a way.
- 1:11But I love getting really in touch with where I am on that day.
- 1:15I find it very centering and very grounding.
- 1:17I also find that if I start with gratitude,
- 1:20it makes me present to the moment and I can go through the day from a very,
- 1:24very good space in my head. Then I usually pick up the guitar.
- 1:28I've been playing the guitar since I was ten years old.
- 1:30I pick up the guitar and I usually play whatever comes to mind.
- 1:32I write songs, I doodle on the guitar.
- 1:35It's a way for me to release emotional energy and also connect with just
- 1:39the flow of music, which I I love very much.
- 1:42So after I do that, then I typically go put on my sneakers.
- 1:45yesterday I went out and mountain biked before I came to work.
- 1:48I was in Colorado with weekend mountain biking with my son and grandson and kids.
- 1:52Sometimes I'll go for a run. This morning I got on my elliptico with
- 1:56a elevation training mask.
- 1:58roadot for about, I don't know,
- 1:59five miles. I'm building my lung capacity.
- 2:02I've noticed an improvement in my singing,
- 2:04also an improvement in my cardiovascular capacity when I'm out mountain biking.
- 2:08Tomorrow I'll probably go for a run.
- 2:10I'll do vasper. I break it up.
- 2:12The idea is you don't want to be doing the same thing over and over again.
- 2:15And I love being outside. So every chance I get I go outside and do things.
- 2:19That's kind of my morning routine.
- 2:21Later in the day when I come home,
- 2:23typically I'll relax. I don't try to force myself to do something,
- 2:27but many times I'll do a sauna.
- 2:28And if I have time in the morning,
- 2:30I'll do a sauna after the cardio.
- 2:31That's a great way to stack those two together.
- 2:34So I'll start the sauna before I leave.
- 2:35I have a great sauna in my building,
- 2:37go do my
- 2:38cardio outside, come back, jump in the sauna,
- 2:40take a shower, come to work. And I don't start my workday until 10 a.m.
- 2:44I give myself that space, number one,
- 2:45to work out. Number two, it gives me a chance to actually prep for the day.
- 2:49I still have about an hour of time after I'm done working out to actually prep
- 2:53for the clients I'm gonna see that day,
- 2:55think about what I want to accomplish.
- 2:57Answer some emails, and that's how I start my day.
- 2:59I try not to beat myself up with I've got to start work at 6 a.m.
- 3:03and end at 6 PM. I find that I work better if I take care of myself first.
- 3:08If I take care of myself first,
- 3:10everything else will flow. If I leverage my health for the sake of taking care
- 3:14of everybody else, that works for a little bit,
- 3:16but then I start to peter out.
- 3:18So it's like prioritizing myself first.
- 3:21It's another gift I give myself.
- 3:25My weekly routine is to do something every day.
- 3:28So some days I've been traveling and doing things like that.
- 3:31Maybe I just do some balance training or just some resistance training.
- 3:34I tried to get in two days of good resistance training.
- 3:36I'm now getting down on the floor because I realize that mobility
- 3:40is basically built on the floor.
- 3:41So doing like burpees, doing some things,
- 3:44crawling around on the floor, things like that.
- 3:46It's amazing how much mobility you can generate that way.
- 3:49Also doing deep squats, sort of sitting in ~ African Bushman,
- 3:53right? Whether in that deep squat.
- 3:54Training myself to be able to do that.
- 3:56I couldn't do it initially, now I can get down there.
- 3:58It's really, really cool. So maintaining mobility sometimes is part of it,
- 4:02not just cardio or just resistance training.
- 4:05On the weekends, I try to get outside.
- 4:07I try to mountain bike, get the elliptico,
- 4:08go around White Rock Lake. But the idea is to be outside and be active.
- 4:13And I try to do something every single day.
- 4:18My monthly routine is basically built on the days and the weeks,
- 4:21and yet I'll factor in some special things.
- 4:24It could be a trip someplace to mountain bike.
- 4:27It could be doing some therapeutic things in the office.
- 4:31I might do plasmaphoresis on a monthly basis,
- 4:33which is what I'm doing now. Do Eboo every other month.
- 4:36I do the red light at least a couple days a week.
- 4:39Here, the ozone sauna a couple days a week.
- 4:41So these are things that I fit into my monthly routine,
- 4:45but they're kind of on a longer time frame.
- 4:47And if I'm out for a week, I don't fret that I miss them.
- 4:49I just pick them up again when I come back.
- 4:54My yearly routine is basically based on the concept that I want to be stronger,
- 4:59faster, fitter, sharper, more mobile than I was last year.
- 5:03And the interesting thing is that sometimes if I have an injury,
- 5:06it can set me back. I had an injury about 20 months ago now that actually
- 5:10set me back pretty hard. And I'm just now,
- 5:13believe it or not, actually starting to exceed where I was 20 months ago.
- 5:18I think one of the lessons to learn here is two things.
- 5:21One, if you have an injury, treat it immediately.
- 5:24Use the regenerative therapies,
- 5:25use the peptides. Any time that you're disabled is time that aging
- 5:29is accelerating on you. So fix it as quick as possible.
- 5:32The second thing is you have to understand that as you go through
- 5:35the chronological decades, what you have to do to regain your strength
- 5:40and your function is different than what you did when you were 18.
- 5:43You have to be using peptides.
- 5:45You have to double down on working out hard.
- 5:47I find most people don't work out hard enough.
- 5:49They basically back off. this is starting to this is I'm getting short of breath.
- 5:53This is starting to feel difficult.
- 5:55No, that's just part of it. And being a soccer player when I was in high school
- 5:59and in college, playing some basketball,
- 6:01things like that, I knew what it was to go to soccer camp and run all day,
- 6:05right? I know what it is to be in amazing shape.
- 6:07And I think that's actually served me well because when most people would say,
- 6:10Well, geez, this is getting kind of tough,
- 6:12it's like, no, I know that if I lean into this,
- 6:14this is having a big benefit for me.
- 6:16And certainly it does. I can feel myself coming back now.
- 6:19I did a VO2 max test about six weeks ago.
- 6:22I'm excited to do one again in about another month.
- 6:24I think I'm going to blow that one away because I'm making progress,
- 6:27because I'm leaning into it, right?
- 6:28And you have to do that if you really want to get strong.
