- 0:04Speaker 1: Moves like Jagger there from two thousand and eleven. I'll
- 0:09Speaker 1: tell you what, that takes me straight back to the
- 0:13Speaker 1: warm up days of Race for Life, you know, because
- 0:17Speaker 1: it's just it was such a good song to get
- 0:20Speaker 1: people in the mood now when you've got to like well,
- 0:22Speaker 1: back in the days it was ladies only, but we
- 0:25Speaker 1: probably had in some venues two thousand ladies really really
- 0:30Speaker 1: rocking it to that Maroon five song.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Oh yeah, great days. Okay.
- 0:36Speaker 1: So now then during the week I was out and
- 0:38Speaker 1: about and caught up with my special guest, so say
- 0:42Speaker 1: no more, sit back and have a listen. Jour only
- 0:44Speaker 1: today brings me to the offices of South km Mind,
- 0:47Speaker 1: where I'm joined by Joe Tolhurst Monty Joe, how are
- 0:49Speaker 1: you Kevin?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Very good? Thanks? How are you?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Excellent and thanks for inviting me in today the charity
- 0:55Speaker 1: South Kent Mind, and I understand it has been going
- 0:57Speaker 1: a long time and you've got a lovely agenda of
- 1:00Speaker 1: weekly activities, so.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Tell us about that.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Yeah. So here at South Kent Mind, we're a local
- 1:06Speaker 4: mental health charity here to support anyone with mental health
- 1:08Speaker 4: challenges in our community. We're dedicated to improving the lives
- 1:11Speaker 4: of people with any challenges to do with mental health.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Is South Kent guiding you along a path to better
- 1:17Speaker 4: mental health through a range of support services such as money, guidance,
- 1:21Speaker 4: advice and the range of weekly activities that you mentioned.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Okay, so the weekly activities, whereabouts to do those and
- 1:29Speaker 1: where do they entail?
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:31Speaker 4: So, each week we run a range of activities across
- 1:33Speaker 4: Folks and Hive and Dover that are fun and formative
- 1:36Speaker 4: and aim to support all our service users on a
- 1:40Speaker 4: longer path to better mental health. Our cooking and baking sessions,
- 1:44Speaker 4: which are really popular, take place in our Folks and
- 1:46Speaker 4: Center which is at the top of ton Time Street
- 1:48Speaker 4: where we have the Abercrombie's Cafe where all of our
- 1:51Speaker 4: cooking and.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Baking takes place.
- 1:53Speaker 4: We'll also have a reading group in Hive, Mindfulness and
- 1:55Speaker 4: sessions and deal and a walk and talk in Dover,
- 1:57Speaker 4: just to name a few. So we spread all across
- 1:59Speaker 4: the South Kent area and all on the community that
- 2:02Speaker 4: we serve. And if you're interested in any of these
- 2:04Speaker 4: weekly activities, you can see our websites South Kentmind or
- 2:08Speaker 4: dot uk and give us a ring to acquire first
- 2:11Speaker 4: about joining.
- 2:12Speaker 1: SO South Kent Mind. It covers a lot of areas.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I mean, if people how far out does it go?
- 2:18Speaker 1: And if you like along the Marsh, you've got branches
- 2:21Speaker 1: in where.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Yeah, So really it's spanning from Sandwich to Dungeoness. So
- 2:25Speaker 4: if you're a resident within the Folks and High District
- 2:27Speaker 4: Council area and the Dover District Council area, we're here support.
- 2:30Speaker 4: We're here to support you with any mental health problems
- 2:32Speaker 4: that you may have.
- 2:33Speaker 3: So along those areas.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Okay, I know you linked up with the National Mind
- 2:37Speaker 1: the organization.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's an important it's an important distinction to
- 2:41Speaker 4: get across Kevin because although we're affiliated with National Mind,
- 2:45Speaker 4: we're actually a totally independent mental health charity. So what
- 2:48Speaker 4: what essentially is is that we're federated with Mind, but
- 2:51Speaker 4: we're run by our own constitution, have a board of
- 2:54Speaker 4: trustees which allows us to support and represent our community
- 2:56Speaker 4: in the best possible way. But that obviously means that
- 3:00Speaker 4: we're totally funded independently too, so we rely on the
- 3:03Speaker 4: generous donations of fundraising support from our local community. So
- 3:07Speaker 4: that's essentially my role to engage that fundraising element and
- 3:11Speaker 4: really sort of engage in the local community in fundraising.
- 3:14Speaker 4: So if you're planning any challenge events and you'd be
- 3:16Speaker 4: interested in working with a great cause, supporting a great cause,
- 3:20Speaker 4: and please do get in touch. All of our contact
- 3:23Speaker 4: details on our website southnkminder or dot UK or through
- 3:26Speaker 4: our feel free to check us out in our social
- 3:28Speaker 4: media channels as well.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Right now, we're going to talk about this later. But
- 3:31Speaker 1: you've got a lovely local challenge coming up. I'm really
- 3:34Speaker 1: looking forward to this one because it's right up my street.
- 3:37Speaker 1: But we'll never chet about that. Just after a bit
- 3:39Speaker 1: of music. But carrying on, let's talk about I'm mean mind,
- 3:44Speaker 1: have they got any charity shops?
- 3:46Speaker 4: Yeah, we actually have three charity shops across the South
- 3:49Speaker 4: Kent area. We got Shops and Folks and Hive and
- 3:52Speaker 4: Dover run by an amazing team of volunteers and led
- 3:55Speaker 4: by brilliant managers.
- 3:56Speaker 3: So our high shops on the high streets.
- 3:59Speaker 4: It actually turned nine years this year and our Dover
- 4:02Speaker 4: Folks and shops both opened last year. It's a really
- 4:05Speaker 4: busy year for the charity last year as we opened
- 4:08Speaker 4: our Dover shop in August twenty three. That can be
- 4:10Speaker 4: found on forty four big in Street and our Folks
- 4:12Speaker 4: and Shop opened in December twenty twenty three and is
- 4:15Speaker 4: on a forty six Sandgate Road. So who shout out
- 4:18Speaker 4: to everyone involved with the opening of those shops and
- 4:21Speaker 4: the every day running because they play a vital role
- 4:24Speaker 4: in raising funds for our charity and it takes the
- 4:26Speaker 4: support of donations from the public to keep those shops
- 4:30Speaker 4: alive because you know, the proceeds are a vital aspect
- 4:34Speaker 4: of our charity. And if you're thinking of a clearout
- 4:37Speaker 4: before Christmas or even after, if you get something you
- 4:39Speaker 4: don't like, you can drop off your donations at our shops.
- 4:43Speaker 4: All the information can be found our websites, or if
- 4:45Speaker 4: you acquire a collection, you can find you find our
- 4:49Speaker 4: phone number on our website, give us a ring and
- 4:51Speaker 4: we can arrange a collection of your of your donations.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Okay, So the shops, etc. And a lot of organized
- 5:01Speaker 1: like Mind, do rely on volunteers. So tell us a
- 5:05Speaker 1: little bit about volunteers and if you like, how many
- 5:07Speaker 1: people do actually engage with Mind at the shops and elsewhere.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, So the.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Volunteering side of our charities is true. Like with many
- 5:16Speaker 4: chainity is the backbone of our charity. We can run
- 5:19Speaker 4: our sessions, our shops, everything that we do without our volunteers,
- 5:24Speaker 4: which we have seventy three registered volunteers across our charity
- 5:28Speaker 4: and we couldn't help the people that we do without them,
- 5:30Speaker 4: so huge thanks to every single one of them.
- 5:32Speaker 3: And if you're looking to.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Become a volunteer, this would be a great help to
- 5:35Speaker 4: our charity.
- 5:36Speaker 3: If you're looking to get involved with.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Our sessions in our shops or just help out our
- 5:40Speaker 4: fundraising events, then feel free to get in touch on
- 5:43Speaker 4: our website or through our social media channels as well
- 5:46Speaker 4: you can find the information. But if you're not looking
- 5:48Speaker 4: to do a full time volunteering role, we also have
- 5:50Speaker 4: a great ambassador program where you can essentially means that
- 5:55Speaker 4: just give up a few hours of your time each
- 5:57Speaker 4: year to help out with a few projects that we
- 6:00Speaker 4: have on a few events, a few fundraising events such
- 6:03Speaker 4: as you know mental health fun run coming up. So
- 6:06Speaker 4: it's a bit less intense than being a volunteer full time,
- 6:09Speaker 4: but it still allows you to be a real great
- 6:11Speaker 4: help to our charity.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Okay, now I.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Will say I did pick up that somebody put on
- 6:17Speaker 1: social media that if you're having a clearout, then instead
- 6:21Speaker 1: of getting after getting rid of all your toys and
- 6:23Speaker 1: bits and pieces for the kids after Christmas, why not
- 6:26Speaker 1: get rid of them before Christmas? Wouln't that be a
- 6:28Speaker 1: good idea to just like you have all your shops
- 6:31Speaker 1: absolutely bulging with Christmas toys and things just before Christmas
- 6:36Speaker 1: instead of the big aftermath you get afterwards. So before
- 6:39Speaker 1: we go any further, let's tell us about the people
- 6:42Speaker 1: that use your services.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, Ken, So we have.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Last year we had over twenty five hundred local people
- 6:49Speaker 4: use our services, and we're always seeing new people in
- 6:53Speaker 4: our folks at Center and across our services, which is
- 6:57Speaker 4: really important because it just shows to us that we're
- 6:59Speaker 4: really aging with our community and helping with their mental health,
- 7:02Speaker 4: which is obviously the whole point of our charity. We
- 7:05Speaker 4: also visited many local schools and supported pupils and young
- 7:08Speaker 4: people last year. That's a great program that we have.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Visiting local schools. Helping young children with their mental health
- 7:15Speaker 4: is such an important age to get into, to get
- 7:18Speaker 4: into them about and stress the importance of good mental
- 7:21Speaker 4: health and focusing on themselves. But we're dedicated to supporting
- 7:25Speaker 4: as many people as possible. There's many people who need
- 7:27Speaker 4: us in our communities. So get in touch if you
- 7:30Speaker 4: need help with your mental health, if you're struggling with
- 7:33Speaker 4: if you have mental health challenges, please do get in
- 7:35Speaker 4: touch and see how we can help you.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Do you know what I've bit on a point there.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Visiting schools I think is so important now for youngsters
- 7:44Speaker 1: because perhaps back in my day, if you like, if
- 7:47Speaker 1: people have mental health problems, the children didn't quite understand it.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But now there's more awareness, isn't there, And it's good
- 7:53Speaker 1: to get the children talking about it.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, Kevin.
- 7:56Speaker 4: There's so much more awareness and so much better understanding
- 7:59Speaker 4: around mental health and how to improve it and how
- 8:02Speaker 4: to how to combat feelings that in the past weren't
- 8:05Speaker 4: really understood. And it's so important that that when people
- 8:09Speaker 4: are feeling emotions that you know, are confusing, are challenging them,
- 8:14Speaker 4: it's important to speak out and to seek services that
- 8:17Speaker 4: can really help you. And I think that's the sort
- 8:18Speaker 4: of real step that's occurred in the last years or
- 8:21Speaker 4: obviously generationally, that that really is important towards better mental
- 8:26Speaker 4: health for everyone.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Okay, Joe, we're going to take a little break now.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Played a bit of music, and then we're going to
- 8:31Speaker 1: come back because we've got to talk about a little
- 8:33Speaker 1: fund runners coming up. Well, there's all this conversation there.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Do you know what I was trying to find a
- 9:00Speaker 1: song in a playlist anything to do with ELFs and elves.
- 9:04Speaker 1: There was no chance so yet to sit all for
- 9:07Speaker 1: Elvis Presley Dear, they've got it straight ahead of Christmas
- 9:11Speaker 1: Cracker that one. Anyway, let's go back and continue our
- 9:14Speaker 1: chat with Joe Tolhurst. Okay, so welcome back Joe, and
- 9:18Speaker 1: now we've learned about the background and what you do
- 9:23Speaker 1: here at South Kent. Mind, but you've another event coming
- 9:26Speaker 1: up on December one, so tell us all about that.
- 9:29Speaker 3: We do we do?
- 9:30Speaker 4: So yeah, on the first of December, Kevin, we're hosting
- 9:33Speaker 4: a family, fun focused run or jog or even walk
- 9:36Speaker 4: event along the LEAs. It's a five kilometer course roughly
- 9:39Speaker 4: following the local park run route, open to all ages
- 9:42Speaker 4: and ability and hint of the name, it's called mental Elf.
- 9:45Speaker 4: So we're strongly and encouraging all participants to dress up
- 9:48Speaker 4: in their best elf attire.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Well that's great.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I mean Christmas time people kind of step outside the salves,
- 9:55Speaker 1: doesn't they and they don't really care what they look like,
- 9:58Speaker 1: especially if we're all in it together. So okay, so
- 10:01Speaker 1: it's a five k run. Have you done one of
- 10:04Speaker 1: these before?
- 10:05Speaker 3: Personally?
- 10:05Speaker 4: Yeah, a couple of them through the years, but as
- 10:08Speaker 4: a charity, we haven't organized something on this scale before.
- 10:11Speaker 4: So it's so it's a real it's a real, great
- 10:13Speaker 4: opportunity for us to to get out there in the charity,
- 10:17Speaker 4: with the charity and do something different, engaged in the
- 10:19Speaker 4: local community.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And does it take as it?
- 10:23Speaker 1: Have you hit any barriers you know on the way
- 10:25Speaker 1: to organizing this? Is it a logistical night there or
- 10:28Speaker 1: has it been a piece of cake?
- 10:30Speaker 3: Well, I would say a piece of cake.
- 10:31Speaker 4: But you know, this is our first year organizing, so
- 10:34Speaker 4: there's been lots to get our heads around as a team.
- 10:36Speaker 4: But thankfully we have a brilliant network of other local
- 10:39Speaker 4: minds we've provided guidance around navigating this event. We also
- 10:42Speaker 4: received valuable advice and guidance from our friends at Channel Rotary,
- 10:46Speaker 4: especially mister Bill Flavel, whose experienced organizing events such as this,
- 10:50Speaker 4: was a huge help, along with of course their generous
- 10:53Speaker 4: assistance with lending a gazebo for our registration desk on
- 10:56Speaker 4: the day, along with a group of volunteers who will
- 10:58Speaker 4: marshal the course. So a big thank you to every
- 11:00Speaker 4: U involved there and of course big thanks to the
- 11:02Speaker 4: council who helped with arranging all the applications that we need,
- 11:05Speaker 4: which you know it was a great experience doing and
- 11:08Speaker 4: with of course helping organize the use of the band
- 11:11Speaker 4: stand of the day which is where, which is where
- 11:12Speaker 4: you are DJ Compare will be on the day.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my job. But I've been on the bands
- 11:17Speaker 1: then it's quite hardy. Actually, ive's porn a rhino. I'm
- 11:20Speaker 1: the only dry person on the lease. So what can
- 11:23Speaker 1: we expect on the day.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Yeah, on the day, Kevin, we're looking to open registration
- 11:27Speaker 4: from ten to thirty am, So everyone wh's bought ticket
- 11:30Speaker 4: turn up from ten thirty am to register and pick
- 11:33Speaker 4: up your race number from our registration desk, which.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Will be at the Leees Cliff Hall.
- 11:37Speaker 4: From then there will alter grab a coffee or a
- 11:39Speaker 4: drink or even a cake if you can start without
- 11:42Speaker 4: for the run before or after from a mobile vendor
- 11:46Speaker 4: who will be there on the day. Huge thanks to
- 11:48Speaker 4: the Truffle Pig of high for helping out on that one.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Then from eleven thirty we'll have music playing from the
- 11:53Speaker 4: bandstand and the warm up session to make sure no
- 11:56Speaker 4: one pulls a muscle on the run. And then the
- 11:58Speaker 4: run proper will begin from twelve and it'll be from
- 12:01Speaker 4: the bandstand and we'll follow a version of the route
- 12:04Speaker 4: the five kilometers apart run routes, So from the bandstand
- 12:07Speaker 4: up towards Sandgate to the end of the lease, turn around,
- 12:10Speaker 4: head all the way along the Lease towards the Memorial
- 12:13Speaker 4: Arch and then back again to that first turnaround point
- 12:16Speaker 4: and then back to the bandstand where you started. So
- 12:19Speaker 4: it's a five kilometer course, but there's no obligation to
- 12:21Speaker 4: complete the whole distance or even to run or jog,
- 12:24Speaker 4: as you can.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Walk part of the course if you'd like.
- 12:28Speaker 4: It's all about having fun and supporting South Kent mind,
- 12:31Speaker 4: which is you know, which is the whole point of
- 12:33Speaker 4: fundraisers like this, and we yeah, we're really look forward it.
- 12:36Speaker 4: So after the run we'll give everyone their medals as
- 12:41Speaker 4: of course everyone gets a medal for taking parts and
- 12:43Speaker 4: hand out some of the awards for the best dressed
- 12:46Speaker 4: elves on the day, So big incentive to dress up there.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Right, good, It sounds like it's going to be fun,
- 12:50Speaker 1: but I mean for families, you're right to bring the
- 12:53Speaker 1: buggies and the dogs along.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Yeah. Of course, of course both dogs, buggies and wheelchairs
- 12:59Speaker 4: will allowed, but we asked that dogs a kittle and
- 13:01Speaker 4: lead don't interfere with other runners and with wheelchairs and pushchairs.
- 13:05Speaker 4: People are especially especially careful and aware of other participants
- 13:09Speaker 4: doing the run.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So that's good. And so you haven't been doing this
- 13:12Speaker 1: on your own. Obviously there's a team of you. So
- 13:15Speaker 1: is anyone you want to thank for helping you out?
- 13:17Speaker 3: Quite a few, Kevin. With these things, they don't happen individually.
- 13:19Speaker 4: It's all so big thanks to the staff, trustees, volunteers
- 13:25Speaker 4: everyone here at South Kentmind who helped organize the event
- 13:27Speaker 4: and will give their time very generously on the day
- 13:29Speaker 4: on the first of December. Again big thanks to Channel
- 13:32Speaker 4: Rotary for their help and advice in the build up
- 13:34Speaker 4: on the day. We could have done it without their
- 13:37Speaker 4: experience of doing fun runs like this, And of course
- 13:40Speaker 4: to Drove Devauce or the Park Run and Ray Johnson
- 13:44Speaker 4: of the Rotary Club of Folkston, two individuals who have
- 13:46Speaker 4: had many questions who I personally have had many questions
- 13:49Speaker 4: for over the past couple of months and who've been
- 13:51Speaker 4: really really helpful throughout, so thank you very much, and
- 13:54Speaker 4: of course yourself, Kevin having me on the show firstly
- 13:57Speaker 4: and giving up your time to djail and compare on
- 13:59Speaker 4: the day.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Thank you very much. So it's very gracious of you
- 14:02Speaker 2: and Joe.
- 14:03Speaker 1: I just want to say that Trevor de Vous and
- 14:06Speaker 1: Ray Johnson are both former guests of the show, so
- 14:09Speaker 1: very enthusiastic about what they do.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 1: So so okay, so where how can people book? It's
- 14:15Speaker 1: time to find out how people can sign up?
- 14:18Speaker 4: Yes, so if this is something interesting if you look
- 14:21Speaker 4: into book, we're selling tickets on event Bright this year
- 14:24Speaker 4: so online, the links of which can be found on
- 14:26Speaker 4: our website and that's south Kentmind dot org dot UK.
- 14:30Speaker 4: And you can also reach this page through our social
- 14:32Speaker 4: media channels, which is at south Kent Mind on Instagram
- 14:35Speaker 4: where the event Bright link is in our bio, or
- 14:37Speaker 4: search south Kent Mind on Facebook.
- 14:40Speaker 3: We look forward to seeing everyone there. Excellent.
- 14:42Speaker 1: So so this is a first for you, But I mean,
- 14:45Speaker 1: if you've got any other sort of Christmas type or
- 14:47Speaker 1: anything events coming up to people that you want to share.
- 14:50Speaker 4: With people, Yeah, so December is obviously really busy month
- 14:53Speaker 4: for the charity. We've got lots of collection days coming
- 14:56Speaker 4: up throughout that month. You can see us in Asda
- 14:58Speaker 4: in Folks on the sixth and seventh of December, and
- 15:01Speaker 4: then dots around the town including the Living Advent days
- 15:04Speaker 4: as well that they have coming up. We also, in
- 15:06Speaker 4: terms of fundraising events, we have a Twismas quiz on
- 15:10Speaker 4: the twenty seventh of December at Holy Trinity Church in Folkston.
- 15:15Speaker 4: The idea of this being that it breaks up that
- 15:17Speaker 4: that period between Christmas and New Year and gives something.
- 15:20Speaker 4: It gives everyone something to do, because obviously that can
- 15:22Speaker 4: be a bit of a be of a lost bit
- 15:23Speaker 4: of a lost time.
- 15:24Speaker 3: So the twenty seventh of December we have a quiz.
- 15:27Speaker 4: We just had one on the first November which went
- 15:29Speaker 4: down really really well, had a great raffle and everyone
- 15:32Speaker 4: really enjoyed themselves.
- 15:33Speaker 3: So next one coming on the twenty seventh.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Joe, I think we've just about covered everything.
- 15:38Speaker 1: There's so much to learn, and I've learned so much
- 15:40Speaker 1: by just speaking to you today. So is there any
- 15:44Speaker 1: final words from you? Anything that we've forgotten the whole
- 15:46Speaker 1: We want to mention.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I think everything, but like I said, further information on
- 15:50Speaker 4: all of our services and especially how to book mental
- 15:52Speaker 4: health can be found on our event bike can be
- 15:55Speaker 4: found through the event Bike page can be found on
- 15:58Speaker 4: our website or social media Chaanels which is again South
