- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Thursday June 18, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Canberra where the government is moving to bank the Fair Work Commission’s latest wage decision. The minimum wage rises 4.75 per cent, with the lowest-paid workers getting a 6 per cent lift. Ministers are pitching it as cost-of-living relief ... while businesses warn the increase adds pressure at a time when many are already stretched. [1] [serious] In Canberra, the other big domestic fight is housing and tax. Labor is pushing through measures it says will help first home buyers and cut taxes for millions of workers, with the government arguing it is widening the path into home ownership and leaving more money in pay packets. The opposition is sharpening its attack ... framing it as a budget gamble ahead of the next political showdown. [2] [curious] In the south and west, the weather is turning nasty again. The Bureau is warning of heavy rain, damaging winds and storms across parts of Western Australia and South Australia, with more wet and windy conditions expected to spread into Victoria and Tasmania. For growers, freight operators and commuters, the message is simple ... keep an eye on warnings and be ready for delays. [3] [serious] Staying with the economy, Australia’s space sector is gathering in Sydney for a major summit. It is a sign of how quickly the industry is growing ... with defence, communications, satellite services and research all in focus. The event underlines a bigger theme for the national economy: Australia is trying to turn advanced technology into jobs, exports and strategic capability. [4][7] [urgent] Now to the United States where the 2026 FIFA World Cup is rolling on, and Australia is already making headlines after beating Türkiye 2-0 in Vancouver. For Australian fans, the result matters far beyond sport ... it lifts confidence, sparks national interest and keeps attention on the Socceroos’ path through the tournament. [6] [serious] Overseas in Europe, the war and security picture remains tense as leaders across the continent keep weighing defence spending, energy security and support for Ukraine. That broader instability is still feeding into global markets, fuel prices and the cost of imports ... issues that land directly in Australian households and businesses. [6] [warm] Back home, the broader message for listeners is clear ... wages are rising, but so are the pressures from housing, weather and global uncertainty. That mix is shaping the national conversation right now, and it is likely to dominate the days ahead. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
