Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Energy Crisis - Where are Labour in all of this?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hundreds of decent, hardworking Kiwi provincial union jobs. Yes, union
- 0:05Speaker 1: jobs are hanging in the balance today. Electricity spot price
- 0:08Speaker 1: is peaking at one thousand dollars per megawatt hour. In
- 0:11Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks. Power companies they're basically canceling
- 0:16Speaker 1: deals for Kiwis to heat their homes this winter, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: businesses literally shuttering operations, rationing power producing less. Think of
- 0:25Speaker 1: the ports that will be affected by that from provincial
- 0:28Speaker 1: New Zealand. Think of the competitive advantage that we are losing.
- 0:32Speaker 1: What's the problem Not enough sun, not enough rain, not
- 0:35Speaker 1: enough wind for our renewable energy sources. Plus we have
- 0:38Speaker 1: a gas shortage. This problem will continue in part because
- 0:43Speaker 1: labour canceled the oil and gas exploration into the future.
- 0:48Speaker 1: This is my generation's nuclear free moment. Now the rubber
- 0:56Speaker 1: has hit the roads. The oil and gas investment and
- 0:59Speaker 1: exploration has gone through the floor. Investment confidence has gone
- 1:02Speaker 1: through the floor. Where are our leaders in this crisis? Well,
- 1:06Speaker 1: Jacinda's in Chicago doing carmel Mania. We know that probably
- 1:10Speaker 1: still dining out on the nuclear free moment. James Shaw
- 1:13Speaker 1: Grant Robertson are both in very cushy one percent jobs
- 1:17Speaker 1: probably not worrying about putting the heat pumps on. I
- 1:19Speaker 1: would think Megan Woods was the Minister of Energy who
- 1:23Speaker 1: signed off on the band and she is still in parliament.
- 1:26Speaker 1: She is the shadow Energy minister, so where is she today.
- 1:32Speaker 1: The government yesterday issued a challenge to labor to help
- 1:35Speaker 1: dig our way out of this crisis at four pm
- 1:38Speaker 1: major announcement. What has been the response. Not one tweet,
- 1:41Speaker 1: not one Facebook post, not one press release from them.
- 1:45Speaker 1: They were unavailable to our producers for an interview at
- 1:48Speaker 1: five forty five am this morning. Don't know why. No
- 1:51Speaker 1: statement even we asked them for a statement if they
- 1:54Speaker 1: wouldn't appear on the program. No statement either, folks. This
- 1:57Speaker 1: is spray and walk away Polyty. It's a classic case
- 2:03Speaker 1: and it looks a little bit now that they're not
- 2:04Speaker 1: talking like it's cowering in a crisis too. And they
- 2:07Speaker 1: were warned. MB told them a ban would cost one
- 2:11Speaker 1: point two to two twenty three billion dollars in lost royalties.
- 2:15Speaker 1: They told them that Method X would up and leave
- 2:18Speaker 1: if this went ahead. She disagreed, she sprayed and then
- 2:23Speaker 1: she walked away. Hipkins also not available for our interview
- 2:26Speaker 1: this morning. He has tweeted, I'll have more on that later,
- 2:32Speaker 1: but I'm sorry. If you've got the energy and resources
- 2:36Speaker 1: to boot the sector up, shipe Creek at least have
- 2:39Speaker 1: the decency to front up. For more from News Talks dB,
