Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Denny Hamlin on Stalled NASCAR Charter Talks: "They Don't Value Us"
Transcript
- 0:00At Playoff media day, Denny Hamlin said that charter
- 0:03negotiations between NASCAR and the teams have stalled.
- 0:08Speaking of money, where is the charter conversation right now?
- 0:11Stagnant. What has what stagnant?
- 0:14Stagnant. What has to be done from either
- 0:17side to move it to the next level?
- 0:20One side we'll have to wake up and be reasonable, that's all.
- 0:24Which side? Not ours, not ours.
- 0:27What made Curtis wear that shirt?
- 0:30That sign on his shirt? Frustration.
- 0:36Anything else? Did he send him?
- 0:39Do you think his message was received?
- 0:42I'm not sure, you know, I was certainly pretty disappointed to
- 0:46not see anyone from NASCAR present Tyler his trophy.
- 0:51That was a little disappointing. Do you think that was personal?
- 0:58I I don't know, it's first I've seen do.
- 1:02You feel like we're getting the story.
- 1:04I, I say we, you know, we read stories that it's getting closer
- 1:07and closer. You're, you're always saying,
- 1:10you know, stagnant. How is how are the fans?
- 1:13Who's telling you it's getting closer and closer?
- 1:15Well, we ask her. Yes, thank you.
- 1:17Of course they they want it to, but it's the truth is that they
- 1:21keep going the wrong direction. But then you're saying stagnant
- 1:24and you're on the other side. We're getting both, you know,
- 1:28but you're telling the truth. And it's.
- 1:29I, I, I believe I am from our standpoint, but it's, you know,
- 1:33I, it's just, it's, it depends on who you ask, but certainly I
- 1:39feel like, yeah, there's, there's probably a handful of
- 1:41teams that are just happy to take any deal that they, they
- 1:44can get and there's others with, you know, some business sense
- 1:47that says this is unreasonable can.
- 1:49You talk to them, the teams that.
- 1:50Are yeah, of of course, and but everyone's going to do what
- 1:53their own, you know, what they want to do that's best for their
- 1:57team and and everyone, each one of the teams will execute an
- 2:01agreement that they feel is fair for themselves.
- 2:03You are the vocal team owner, but do you have people in your
- 2:06ear or yanking on you to say, hey, can you do this for us?
- 2:08Can you say this on your podcast?
- 2:10Can you get this word? Out, I think not directly, no,
- 2:16but they don't hate it either. But I, you know, I'm not, you
- 2:20know, I don't love being the megaphone.
- 2:22I wish some of these other owners who are griping to me
- 2:25through, you know, text and calls would just do it publicly
- 2:29themselves. But that, you know, I think that
- 2:31they they fear push back, you know, but what's the?
- 2:34Fear of push back though, yeah. Yeah, that's The thing is we're
- 2:38all trying to improve the sport and grow the sport and we all
- 2:41want that. We all want what's best for the
- 2:42sport. Sport does great, we will do
- 2:45better. So I think we all just need to
- 2:48figure out how to lock arms and and do it together.
- 2:51But you know, we don't have any agreement in front of us that is
- 2:55is locking of arms. It's all one sided.
- 2:57Are the younger owners more? Vocal because your future, you
- 3:02know, the older owners, their futures intact.
- 3:05I mean you have. To worry about, I mean, I guess
- 3:07you know, people see me gripe, but you don't have to realize
- 3:10that I, I made a good living in this as a NASCAR driver and I
- 3:14chose to invest back in the France family in NASCAR and they
- 3:19are yet to show me an opportunity where I'm going to
- 3:21get that back. Denny with 10 races left, can a
- 3:26charter deal get done? And what happens if it's not
- 3:30done by Phoenix? If it doesn't happen, OK, Can a
- 3:35charter deal get done? Yeah, absolutely it could, but
- 3:40again, someone will have to wake up and have a completely
- 3:43different mindset and I just don't know that that is going to
- 3:46be possible. So you know what happens if the
- 3:49season ends, then we retain all of our rights and.
- 3:54That's clear. You retain your rights.
- 3:56Yeah, we don't have a charter agreement.
- 3:58We we don't, we don't owe the series anything and they don't
- 4:01owe us anything. So it goes both ways for sure.
- 4:03Do you have? Bargaining from racing?
- 4:05What's that? Can they stop you from racing?
- 4:07Without charters, I don't think so, Yeah.
- 4:08I don't think they can stop you from racing.
- 4:11I mean, Joe and Joe and Billy's garage can put a car together
- 4:15and and run a race in the way our sport is formed.
- 4:19Right now, Shirt said. I don't want my charter taken
- 4:21away. Like, is that a threat?
- 4:23Yeah, What's the threat? Oh well, that's if you speak
- 4:27negatively. Say some negative.
- 4:29Stuff, yeah. If they don't, if they don't
- 4:30like what you say, they yeah, they're trying to reserve the
- 4:34right. To be measured.
- 4:35I don't know how you it's subjective.
- 4:37How do you even who's the who's the jury, the judge and the
- 4:41executioner? Sounds like we saw the same
- 4:43person. It's never the same person.
- 4:46Right. It's never been the same person,
- 4:48but now they're proposing it is. Which is who?
- 4:52Them. That's just.
- 4:55Who them as a collective that's not a?
- 4:56One whoever's in charge, OK. So you don't know still.
- 5:02No, I don't know, I. Don't know.
- 5:04Do you have many bargaining chips left as the owners group
- 5:07where you know first it was ATV deal and then the whole Netflix
- 5:12thing and NASCAR's doing their own, you know, scenario where
- 5:15they can feature the drivers. I don't know what drivers will
- 5:17be in it. What chips are left on the
- 5:19table? Is it only the negative, like
- 5:23afraid you're going to get something?
- 5:25I don't know. Is that what's left from their
- 5:26side is to crack down or from your side?
- 5:29Do you have any bargaining chips left if they can't stop you from
- 5:33racing? Yeah, I mean, I'm not really
- 5:34sure, you know, where, where leverage lies.
- 5:38It's it, you know, I would argue both sides feel like they they
- 5:40have some, but I think it's more just of a frustration of the
- 5:45lack of acknowledgement that the teams have built the sport.
- 5:49The the Hendrick and Gibbs putting superstars on the
- 5:53racetrack. That is what is built the sport.
- 5:56You know, fans do not come to see cars going around in
- 6:00circles. If they would, then we would
- 6:02sell out ARCA races. But they don't.
- 6:04They come to sell out on Sunday to watch Chase Elliott and Kyle
- 6:08Larson and Kyle Busch. So who provides them the cars?
- 6:12And that's the teams who spends the money?
- 6:14That's the teams whose sponsors go buy a suite.
- 6:18That's the teams whose sponsors activate in their midway.
- 6:21The teams that's that's that's the tough part that does they
- 6:25just they don't value us. When this negotiation all
- 6:29started, you think we can get to the playoffs this year without a
- 6:31deal in place? What's that?
- 6:32When the when the talk started, did you think we get to the
- 6:35playoffs this year with no deal in place?
- 6:37Oh, yeah, I had, I, I had a feeling this is going to go all
- 6:41the way to the 11th hour for sure.
- 6:44And, you know, there's just been a lot of stall tactics that have
- 6:47been in play, and here we are. As a as a owner driver, do you
- 6:52think it's a distraction for you?
- 6:53Personally, under the no, I, I mean, certainly I'm going to
- 6:57thrive in chaos. That's my MO.
- 7:00But, but generally speaking, I, you know, I I always prepare as
- 7:04much as I can as a driver, do my job as an owner, do my job as a
- 7:08podcaster. And, you know, certainly, you
- 7:11know, are my days filled now with disgruntled people calling
- 7:15me saying we got to do this, we got to do that?
- 7:17Yeah, absolutely. But it doesn't change when I put
- 7:20my helmet on. I'm always going to be locked
- 7:22in. Your legacy in the sport, you've
- 7:24got a Daytona 500, you don't have a championship yet, but
- 7:27your legacy now is changing in how you are being so vocal here.
- 7:31And the fans are taking notice, that's for sure.
- 7:33Maybe the series doesn't need to, but do you feel like this is
- 7:36a big important part for your legacy for the series moving?
- 7:38Forward, I'm just trying to make it better than what it was and,
- 7:41and still try to grow it. And, and it's unfortunate, you
- 7:44know, I, I, I wish I had a bigger role in it, You know, I
- 7:48tried to, but you do. Yeah, I, I, I do.
- 7:52Certainly there's been some changes that have happened
- 7:55around conversations that you have.
- 7:57And I think that NASCAR for a while has been very receptive to
- 8:01listening to advice and some things.
- 8:03But you know, certainly we're, when it comes to dollars and
- 8:06cents, that's where we're, we're in two different ballparks.
- 8:10And I just as a driver, I've put in 20 years doing this and I, I
- 8:15feel like I've tried to do my best to grow social following,
- 8:19giving more content, things like that, trying to update the
- 8:21times, right? I tried to start a race team to
- 8:25build my legacy well beyond being a race car driver itself,
- 8:29being part of the sport, investing in gym, France gym,
- 8:31investing in NASCAR, you know, but it's, you know, I, I'm doing
- 8:36my part. But certainly, I think probably
- 8:40from their standpoint, they just see me as a throne on their side
- 8:43and more likely would be better off without me.
- 8:45Have they? Warned you.
- 8:47Have they ever warned you? Come to you and said, you know,
- 8:49hey, you can temper it, take it down.
- 8:51Of course. Yeah, of.
- 8:51Course, and so you do know who is up there telling you to not
- 8:56do that. It's you said them.
- 8:58Yeah, yeah. I mean, I there's a group, but
- 9:00definitely there's, there's always a, a top to the to the
- 9:03peak. If you buy a charter rather it
- 9:08they're active right now, they're going to expire.
- 9:11If you own it and you abide by all the rules and you finish
- 9:14where you're supposed to finish, how can they take it from you?
- 9:18I don't know, it doesn't make sense.
- 9:20So how can they threaten that if you disparage them?
- 9:24Like what? What legal standing do they?
- 9:26Have I'm not sure. OK, it would have to be explored
- 9:29for sure, but. You're right, even if it
- 9:32expires, you still own it. The expiration is up to them.
- 9:35If it if it's expired, it's worthless, but if he still owns
- 9:39it and and they run their mouths about it and they try to take
- 9:42it, I would feel there's a legal challenge there.
- 9:45You bought it. I don't know, yeah.
- 9:47You own it. Surely.
