Latest / Brandon Fogal Evolution / #307 - Is Wes Huff Right About Catholicism? My Honest Reaction
Transcript
- 0:00Wes Huff just dropped a bombshell yesterday. He released a video of six reasons why I am not a Catholic.
- 0:06I have wrestled with this myself.
- 0:08I guess I lean more towards the Protestant side.
- 0:13I've been reluctant to take any labels myself of that, because I think that
- 0:18just pins you like everything is Catholic.
- 0:20And if you're not Catholic, then you're Protestant.
- 0:22But then it's like, well, there's Orthodox out there. There's so many branches.
- 0:25I think we've confused a lot of things. But Westhoff gave a very strong reminder
- 0:30of why he is not Catholic.
- 0:32And we're going to dive into, I think, the strongest area is the area of justification.
- 0:37How is a person made right with a holy God?
- 0:41What I'm asking is the question, how am I made right with God?
- 0:46How is God's work in moving a person from sin to a state of grace accomplished?
- 0:53The fact is I have a problem. I have a problem because I'm a sinner.
- 0:57And so as a sinner, I am confronted with a holy and righteous God who due to
- 1:02his holiness and his righteousness, if I am to ever be in relationship with
- 1:06him, my sin must be accounted for.
- 1:09And so justification is the act by which God declares a sinner like me righteous.
- 1:17And one of the main reasons, if not the main reason I am not Roman Catholic
- 1:22is due to the answer to that question on justification.
- 1:25When I read scripture, when I look at passages specifically addressing the topic
- 1:29throughout the book of Galatians and Romans, Ephesians, Titus, 1 Corinthians,
- 1:34and James, I see the clarity of the Protestant position compared to the discontinuity
- 1:40of that of the gospel that Rome articulates.
- 1:43But the divide between the Protestant and Roman Catholic perspective here hinges
- 1:47on a crucial semantic and theological distinction about what the term itself means.
- 1:54The Roman Catholic Church maintains that God will not declare a person just
- 2:00until that person actually is just,
- 2:05requiring the person to be just by definition so that when God examines and
- 2:10defines that person, he finds genuine righteousness present.
- 2:13In contrast, Protestants argue that a person can be justified only when something is added to them,
- 2:20namely the righteousness of Christ, and that one must be covered by his righteousness
- 2:27in order to be justified.
- 2:30I think that it nails it on the head of why I could not become a Roman Catholic.
- 2:35I've said many times on my videos I've posted, I've wanted to become Catholic,
- 2:39and I've voiced that to my family, to friends of mine at points in my life because
- 2:44I'm drawn to the Catholic Church.
- 2:47But I think it is by the grace of God that I have not become Catholic.
- 2:51Everything about them I like, and I think there's good things,
- 2:54there's right things in the Catholic Church that Protestants don't have, but there's...
- 2:58There's things that are very important, the issue of justification,
- 3:01and it adds a lot of confusion of how a person can be saved.
- 3:06It's adding levels, things that people are putting their trust in as opposed
- 3:11to the simplicity of putting your faith in Jesus Christ.
- 3:15Because that's where it gets down to, like, how was a person made right before
- 3:19God? Is it by the works they do? Is it by becoming baptized?
- 3:22Is it by being baptized? or is it like by taking the Lord's Supper,
- 3:27going through elements of grace, or is it by simply trusting in Jesus?
- 3:32I think all those other things can be good, but it adds layers of confusion
- 3:37to somebody and they're putting their reliance on those things as opposed to
- 3:42just trusting in Jesus. And that was the message of the gospel.
- 3:46The simplicity that a child can understand and a child can be saved,
- 3:51just put your trust in him. He's your father.
- 3:55You trust in him with everything. I think that's the difference.
- 3:58And if we add confusion to that, it can damage the reputation of the gospel.
- 4:04It can damage people's just relationship with Christ and how they're going to
- 4:08conduct Christian living.
- 4:09I think that's the main issue, justification for me. There's a lot of other
- 4:13things, but I do, I like a lot of things about Catholicism.
- 4:17And these are just flavors, but I think we got to stay faithful to what the
- 4:21text of the Bible says and Westhoff gave a very, very well summation of all
- 4:27these different points of disagreements that we have.
- 4:30So I'll leave it at that. Let me know what you think. Which side are you on?
- 4:33I think if you trust in Christ, keep it at that and I think everything will
- 4:37be good. All right. All right. Have a good day. Have a good weekend. See y'all.
