Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Teba K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:22friends review Korean dramas and we are back for the very last
- 0:26review episode of season 6. I can't believe that we're here.
- 0:31Wow, what a journey. For this episode, I am joined by
- 0:34both of the hosts of the afternoon at ASKS Podcast.
- 0:38I have Grace and Sarah with me. How are you guys?
- 0:42Hi. Good.
- 0:46Excited to be on here, both of us together.
- 0:50And, and for us to do this all together, I have had each of you
- 0:54on individually as guests for the podcast.
- 0:58And I'm really thrilled that both of you guys were so keen to
- 1:01come on and talk about I'm not a robot.
- 1:04That is the drama that we'll be talking about today and
- 1:07reviewing. You guys basically picked this
- 1:10one. You were like, I really want to
- 1:12talk about this. I want to review this with you.
- 1:14And I won't say you know why or why not at this point.
- 1:17I'll let you guys handle that later down the line.
- 1:19But obviously this is a drama that may or may not be well
- 1:26liked in the community, but I remember watching it several
- 1:31years back and so I just kind of felt like re watching it.
- 1:34Plus this has been highly requested by people as well for
- 1:40me to cover. I'm not a robot.
- 1:42So I was like, oh perfect, I got some momentum here, I can watch
- 1:45it again. And you guys were so gracious
- 1:47enough to want to do the same. So what have you guys been
- 1:51watching before we get into the show?
- 1:54Yeah, there's so much out at the moment.
- 1:56We've had a bit of a drought I feel like, with decent K dramas
- 1:58and suddenly September here and all of this stuff is coming out.
- 2:03I literally been the first 3 episodes of Tempest today, which
- 2:07is the new political thriller Condition and Kang Duan.
- 2:12Yeah, and it's so good. Oh, I'm so excited.
- 2:16When I saw your post. About it I was like, yes, I
- 2:18can't wait to watch that one too you.
- 2:20Know I think we've all of us have just been hit with dramas
- 2:24that have amazing casts and we have sky high expectations for
- 2:28them and then they drop and they're like 12 and it's bad you
- 2:34know it's really bad but this this is Stella.
- 2:36The curse is Stella. John Cho in okay drama is
- 2:41Stella. It's really super classy and
- 2:44can't trust anyone. We don't know who's good and we
- 2:47don't know who's bad, and I love that kind of.
- 2:49But not many episodes left. You said you binged the first 3
- 2:52episodes. Yeah, there's only 9.
- 2:54So I guess they're doing a release of 3/3.
- 2:56I don't know how they're going to release it, but yeah, three
- 2:58have come. They dropped them already, but
- 3:00it's only 9 episodes. So the the pacing is really,
- 3:03really good. There's not a lot of slow.
- 3:05It's a bit like, you know, if you're used to spy thrillers,
- 3:07it's almost like they know that you don't need a lot of
- 3:09explaining of how this clever guy has put all the pieces
- 3:13together. He basically says, well, this,
- 3:14this, this happened. So therefore and you're like, of
- 3:17course, yes, you're so smart. And we did it in one minute.
- 3:19So it really like like speeds on through.
- 3:22So it's, yeah, I've got high, high hopes.
- 3:25And she just looks majestic. I love her.
- 3:29Yeah, our ambassador. So yeah.
- 3:31The sassy girl herself. All right, great.
- 3:34What do you what do you got going on?
- 3:36So I had been on a self-imposed drought because I had too much
- 3:41stuff going on and feeling chaotic.
- 3:44But I, I was trying to finish watching Meet Yourself, the C
- 3:49drama. And once in a while my subtitles
- 3:52break and I was like in the middle of eating dinner or
- 3:55something. So I was like, I need to turn
- 3:56something else on. So I turned on like flowers in
- 3:59the sand. That's what I want to watch.
- 4:02Yeah. And and then I got sucked.
- 4:04In 20, yeah. 24, Yeah, yeah. I only I don't watch currently
- 4:08dropping anything because I like to binge Grace and SO.
- 4:12We're so emphatic on that. Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 4:16So so then I got sucked into that and I think I watched like
- 4:2013 episode. No, no, wait, no no, it's only
- 4:2312 episode. So, so I watched like 10
- 4:25episodes this week and then I was like, oh crap, I have to do
- 4:29my rewatch of I dropped it and like I have been watching I'm
- 4:34not a robot since then. But yeah, I'm really, I'm really
- 4:38liking like Flowers in the sand. OK.
- 4:40Yeah, nice. But I I mean, it's, it's really
- 4:43my jam kind of thing because I like the athletic stuff plus
- 4:47slice of life type of thing, like racket boys, you know,
- 4:51things like that. 2125 yeah. So yeah, I've been really liking
- 4:55that and I'm really looking forward to.
- 4:56To Tempest, yeah, I'm looking forward to Tempest as well.
- 4:59Getting getting to press play on that.
- 5:01There's not a very long list of 2025 dramas and I'm like OK,
- 5:05yeah, I want to circle back and definitely press play on these.
- 5:08Some of them end up on my finished 2025 lists and I end up
- 5:13deleting them off the list because I'm like, yeah, no, I'm
- 5:15never going to. I'm never going to watch that.
- 5:17Like even if everybody loved it, it's still, it's my life, my
- 5:21time, so. Right, right.
- 5:23Totally. Very choosy but Tempest I was
- 5:26like Oh yeah this looks this. This is why K dramas are
- 5:29freaking so hard to make nowadays, because this is a
- 5:31budget that needed to be approved for just the cast
- 5:35alone. Oh my God.
- 5:36Oh God. But before we get into the

- 6:24Laura. Thank you so much for being a
- 6:26patron. OK, so we're going to get going
- 6:29on this older drama, admittedly, but it's not pre 2015.
- 6:34That's like the cut off. I feel for old, old dramas.
- 6:38I guess that's the perception, at least in the community.
- 6:43The My Drama is synopsis for I'm Not a Robot, reads Kimin.
- 6:46Q is the largest shareholder of a financial company.
- 6:49He suffers from a human allergy preventing him from normal
- 6:53interactions with other people. He becomes interested in a
- 6:56robotic project named Aji 3, created by the Santa Maria
- 7:00Robotic Team. The team is headed by Hung
- 7:02Beckyung, inventor of Aji 3 and world renowned robotics
- 7:06professor. He modelled Aji 3 after his
- 7:09ex-girlfriend Todia, A struggling inventor.
- 7:14Struggling inventor that also works as a personal shopper to
- 7:18make ends meet. Just when Kimmin Q wants to test
- 7:22the robot, an accident causes the malfunction of the robot's
- 7:26battery. Hung Beckyun begs Dodia to take
- 7:29the place of IG3 and pretend to be the robot so they can get
- 7:34funding from Kim Inkyu. But IG3 becomes the closest
- 7:38thing that the lonely Kim Inkyu has to real contact with another
- 7:43person, so things obviously get a little complicated.
- 7:47This show aired from December 2017 to January 2018.
- 7:52I forgot about this. It's 32 episodes long because
- 7:55the show aired 230 minute episodes every Wednesday and
- 7:59Thursday. So if you kind of watch the
- 8:02show, it almost feels like every two episodes, one and 2-3 and
- 8:05four so on and so forth feel like 1 episode because it's very
- 8:09easy to breeze through a 30 minute episode.
- 8:12Like let's just be real. But you can kind of think of it
- 8:15that way. So it's the equivalent of a 16
- 8:18episode K drama. The director was Zhang Dae Yun
- 8:22and we have covered one other K drama of his on the feed.
- 8:27It is W2 Worlds apart from 2016. This is a big time director.
- 8:33He's directed the King, 2 Hearts, Queen of Reversals, East
- 8:36of Eden, Arang and the Magistrate Cunning single lady.
- 8:39She was pretty. And of course the 2022 banger
- 8:44Reborn Rich. Everyone was talking about
- 8:46Reborn rich. It was up in the charts and the
- 8:49ratings. So Jung Daeun, have you guys
- 8:52seen much of his filmography, this director?
- 8:55I've seen Cunning single lady that was actually one of my
- 9:00entrees back into K drama when I started watching again because I
- 9:04watched when I was like in high school and early college.
- 9:07And then I stopped for a long time so that that was like one
- 9:11of the 1st and like I rewatched that like 4 times because I
- 9:13loved it. And then I saw her.
- 9:15She was pretty. And that one is, you know, it's
- 9:18the premises is not great and there are problems with it.
- 9:22But I still, I still enjoyed it. I remember enjoying it.
- 9:25Yeah, Sarah. I haven't seen any of his other
- 9:30dramas, actually. Yeah, well.
- 9:32I thought you might have seen one or something.
- 9:34Yeah, I keep meaning to. I think I picked up W2 Worlds
- 9:37Apart and Reborn Rich on episode 1.
- 9:40I just wasn't in the mood. It wasn't anything to do with
- 9:42the drama. I just I understand I have to be
- 9:43in the mood to be. I'm the mood.
- 9:46Yeah, and then King to Hearts, I knows on your underrated list
- 9:49just from when you came onto our podcast, I love You need to
- 9:51watch that. Yeah, definitely.
- 9:54But I haven't actually made it made it yet.
- 9:56But God's Beads, which you've listed as his upcoming drama as
- 10:01Ambu Hunting. So that's gonna be a watch for
- 10:04me, a guaranteed watch for me. So I'm lucky for him.
- 10:08Because I'm Bohun, you know, Because because of reasons.
- 10:12The show was written by Kim Somi.
- 10:15She has written 9 movies including Seducing Mr. Perfect
- 10:20from O Six. I've had a little conniption
- 10:22when I was like seducing Mr. Perfect for from 2006.
- 10:26It's almost 20 years ago. So that movie is with Daniel
- 10:29Henny and UN Tung Hua for television.
- 10:33She's only written two things. It's this and Shiner go crazy.
- 10:37So literally she has not written anything in almost almost 10
- 10:40years because the last thing she wrote was I'm not a robot.
- 10:45I thought that was. Sad, yeah.
- 10:46Yeah, makes me sad. Yeah.
- 10:48I'm going to bring up a point about her later because it's I
- 10:51feel like it's a bit of a perfect circle, but it's plot
- 10:54related. So OK, I will circle back.
- 10:56All right. Fair enough.
- 10:57This show stars Yusengol and he plays Kim ING Q, the male weed.
- 11:02This is a child actor. He has been on TV screens for
- 11:07almost 20 years. He made his big debut in the
- 11:10film The Way Home from 2002. That was his breakout role.
- 11:14He's been in about 12 movies. I've seen a couple of them.
- 11:18I think Sondal, the man who sells the River, which is
- 11:20literally about this big con of him literally selling a river.
- 11:24And I was like, I don't know, this might not work.
- 11:26It worked. It was amazing.
- 11:28The magician as well. I remember watching.
- 11:30He's been in 23 TV shows and a few when I started going
- 11:36through, I was like, oh, I've watched a lot of his shows.
- 11:38I've watched Wario Peck Tong SU from 2011, Operation proposal.
- 11:43I miss you. The emperor, owner of the mask,
- 11:46I think has a has an old blog review up on the Tibox site.
- 11:49So I'm really feeling like I'm a fan, even though I wouldn't if
- 11:53someone asked me, are you a die hard fan of, you know, this
- 11:56actor? I'd be like, I don't, I wouldn't
- 11:58say that, but he always I like him.
- 12:00I I really do like his work and there's a couple of shows on
- 12:04here that I'm like, shit, I really have to watch those.
- 12:06And it's memorist. I've never seen Memorist.
- 12:09And I also want to watch 2009's The Great Queen's Hondock.
- 12:13Really want to watch that historical.
- 12:16So how do you guys feel about this actor?
- 12:21I feel like I'm the opposite of you in that I would say I'm like
- 12:24a huge fan of this actor OK, but have not seen half the end of
- 12:28his dramas. It's basically, it's basically
- 12:32this drama made me a huge fan of Yousefo but I haven't actually
- 12:36gone and watched his back cap London and sadly like I think
- 12:39because his dramas including this one have not been a great
- 12:43success ratings wise, I feel like he's now not getting The
- 12:47Office. He's been doing theatre where I
- 12:49stalk him on this and he doesn't really post match but he's been
- 12:52doing theatre work and stuff. So he hasn't had a drama since
- 12:56The Deal, which was 2023 drama that I don't think anyone
- 13:00watched including myself. I did watch Moonshine, which is
- 13:04a historical drama with Hayley and also Byung Rusuk before he
- 13:08was like, you know, Sanjay and big and it was an enjoyable
- 13:13drama but it wasn't any great shakes.
- 13:16I do really want to watch The Memorist because I also really
- 13:20like I forgot no red sleeve. Oh yes, yes, it's Issa Young.
- 13:27Yes, don't worry. About Young and he's similar in
- 13:31that he can't touch anyone because he gets all their
- 13:35memories, which I thought was like a really lovely parallel to
- 13:39this drama. So I've been meaning to hit play
- 13:41on that one too. But I just fair.
- 13:44I think he's great. Yeah.
- 13:45I want more dramas, even though I haven't seen his past.
- 13:48OK. Sorry, you're like a huge die
- 13:50hard fan, but you haven't seen a lot of that's exactly the
- 13:55opposite of because I really appreciate him and I love him.
- 13:59I think he's so cute and I think he's a great actor.
- 14:01But if you sit down and like ask me to write like your top ten
- 14:04favorite actors or whatever, I just wouldn't.
- 14:07I would never think. Oh yeah, you so more.
- 14:11I'm the same with Sarah, I love him in this drama and I've like
- 14:16seen him in nothing else. Are you joking?
- 14:20No, no. Well, I mean, OK, so I, I'm sure
- 14:22I've seen him in something, but I can't off the top of my head
- 14:26figure out what. That's fine.
- 14:27But but I I love that he he's in Queen's Hundal because that.
- 14:33You know, much younger, yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's one that I I
- 14:37want to watch at some point maybe, but it seems like it
- 14:40might be too old. It's one of those things where
- 14:42it's like before 2010. So you're like, Oh my gosh, the
- 14:45production value on this. But I've also heard that one was
- 14:48wildly popular and, like, so much fun and, like, not
- 14:53historically accurate at all, but like, you know, all of that,
- 14:58you know, all of that artistic license, like, made it really
- 15:01fun. So.
- 15:02Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:03Exactly. If I could just do a mini mini
- 15:07plug, they asked me in delight Patreon have done.
- 15:09They pick a Saguk every summer to watch as a group watch, and
- 15:13the great Queen Sunduck was this summer's Saguk.
- 15:16I can't do group watches because I can't keep up, but they have
- 15:19been absolutely loving it, so I think you guys would love it.
- 15:24Too, I think. I would.
- 15:25I know. I know the guys who are loving
- 15:28it now and I know their taste and you guys are lying.
- 15:31So I think you guys, yeah, I think you would both enjoy it.
- 15:34OK, well, that's that kind of plug.
- 15:37I like that. I like that.
- 15:38That craziness that you guys both enjoy.
- 15:41Because I like angst. And listen, the old Sagooks,
- 15:47they had it. They had it in spades.
- 15:49So moving on, we have Tess Huvin.
- 15:51She plays Todia slash IG3. She's our female lead.
- 15:56And before we got on here, there was a little bit.
- 16:03So Grace had a little bit of a meltdown because she was staring
- 16:06at Tess Huvin in her filmography and she was like, is she the
- 16:10female lead from when the phone rings?
- 16:12And it was a really interesting moment because you genuinely
- 16:18look so confused and alarmed. Yeah, because you couldn't
- 16:22connect her, really. I mean, her vibe was so very
- 16:28different. And when the phone rings and I
- 16:32am not famous for having a great memory when it comes to actors,
- 16:37names, faces, etcetera. Like I'm really great at
- 16:41forgetting like people. And so I really had not made
- 16:46that connection. Like maybe at some point during
- 16:49my watch, but then I completely forgot.
- 16:52And then when I was rewatching this, it never once occurred to
- 16:55me rewatching I am not a robot. It never once occurred to me
- 16:59like, Oh yeah, I saw her recently and when so.
- 17:04I think I said on our when the phone phone rings episode review
- 17:09that I did with Carol at the beginning of the year, which
- 17:12feels like 20 years ago, I said I'm not a robot was like the
- 17:16best thing that she's ever done. Like this is her magnum opus at
- 17:19this point, because this show is not the only thing she's done.
- 17:24She's done the fabulous rookie cops peace of your mind.
- 17:26We're stars land strongest delivery man and honestly, I'm
- 17:30not a robot like takes the cake for her filmography.
- 17:35And it's sad that you couldn't connect her to when the phone
- 17:39rings. She's so dry and when the phone
- 17:42rings, she's So what I said was personality less in when the
- 17:47phone rings compared to how she is and I'm not a robot.
- 17:51And it's really no surprise that you were like, wait a minute,
- 17:54that's the same girl. It's sad, it's sad.
- 18:00How do you guys feel about Chase Tubin?
- 18:01Where have you seen her before? So I have seen her in one of the
- 18:06phone. No.
- 18:09And then I and then I saw her in Loving the Moonlight.
- 18:12But I think Loving the Moonlight I saw around the same time when
- 18:16I first watched I am not a robot.
- 18:20So when I saw love in the moonlight, I was like, Oh yeah,
- 18:22I remember her in that. So there was some recognition
- 18:27there. I have not completely lost my
- 18:29mind. It's just really when the phone
- 18:31rings, she gave such a different vibe that like I, I just
- 18:35couldn't connect her. So yeah, yeah, I, I can, I can
- 18:40recognize people. It's just like, I guess this is
- 18:43actually. Dying of laughter.
- 18:46A test to. A test to.
- 18:48I feel like her being a versatile actor, yeah, yeah,
- 18:53yeah. I mean you can't blame her for
- 18:55the character being like a not very interesting character in
- 19:00the most recent she did, I mean I think.
- 19:03She did her job like she had, you know, she, she ran with a
- 19:05headscarf through forest in her business slacks.
- 19:10And she tried. Yeah.
- 19:13She tried. Yeah, Yeah.
- 19:14There was a lot of trying in there.
- 19:16Sarah, how do you feel about chess?
- 19:19Again, because I love this drama so much and I spoil this, I love
- 19:23this drama so much and I think she's amazing in this drama.
- 19:25So I have always really had really positive feelings about
- 19:29Chasey Bin. But again, I'm like looking at
- 19:31her filmography and thinking like actually.
- 19:34Actually. So I did watch where Styles land
- 19:37with Ijahun. Yeah, yeah, she was good in that
- 19:40too. Like similar character to her
- 19:43character here. And I am not a robot, quite
- 19:44feisty. And I think she has, I really
- 19:47love the way she delivers her lines really quickly.
- 19:51Like, you know, when she's got like in, in I'm not a robot,
- 19:53this is not a problem. But she there's a thing called
- 19:55chingu mode, like a friend mode and where she kind of like
- 19:58chills out, goes into Pamela and she just cusses and delivers
- 20:03words really fast. And I love the way she does it.
- 20:05I think she's got a really distinctive, fun way of
- 20:08delivering those particular lines.
- 20:09So I think those roles that she has where she's like angry and
- 20:12shouting at people as opposed to how she was and when the phone
- 20:15rings. Just like mute, mute for for
- 20:18several episodes. It's like more her thing, right?
- 20:21Yeah, I I really like her as an actress.
- 20:24Fair. I like that.
- 20:26Very positive on Tess Hubin and that pretty much rounds out the
- 20:30cast that I want to talk about specifically.
- 20:32We have this is an ensemble cast.
- 20:34There's lots of people besides these two, but this is the main
- 20:372. There's definitely more people
- 20:40that we can focus on, but at this point, I would love to turn
- 20:44it over to you guys and just ask, how did you like I'm Not a
- 20:48Robot? Did you love it, hate it?
- 20:51What were some of your issues maybe that you had with it, if
- 20:54you had any? All the things, all the
- 20:56thoughts. So I'll go first.
- 20:59I I'm going to confess now. I am 100% biased about this
- 21:04drama, so I will not like if you're looking for a critique on
- 21:07this drama, it's not going to come from me because I love this
- 21:10drama. It is one of my absolute top
- 21:12favorite dramas ever. And it will always probably
- 21:15because it's one of those early dramas for me and it just made
- 21:19me laugh and cry and then laugh and then cry.
- 21:22I think there's something about early K dramas that part of the
- 21:26delight and the joy is in discovering this whole genre and
- 21:30the way they do things and it being like a whole new delight
- 21:34to you that you'll never recapture.
- 21:36You know, like when you're like 150 dramas down the line and
- 21:40watching stuff and you're like, oh, it's that again, you know.
- 21:42So it will never lose its place for me in my pantheon of like,
- 21:46lists of, you know, top dramas. I will always have a really
- 21:49special. It will always have a special
- 21:51place in my heart because of it. And if people criticize it, I'm
- 21:54like, yeah, but you know, I'll forgive it.
- 21:57It's one of those dramas. And we all, I think we all have
- 22:00one of those dramas, don't we, where we know what people don't
- 22:02like about it. But I will.
- 22:05I will always forgive it. You know those those little
- 22:08failings it has, Yeah. So it's a 5 for me solidly.
- 22:12Okay. Yeah, and I feel the same.
- 22:17I mean, it's not that I was discovering dramas at the time,
- 22:20but it was like when I was rediscovering dramas.
- 22:23And I like falling back in love with this, you know, this world.
- 22:28And I just thought it was so well done.
- 22:31The pacing was great, the laughing and the crying, like
- 22:35huge pendulum swings. I just loved how well they
- 22:40balanced all of that. I just found it highly
- 22:43entertaining and like even on re watching it again now for
- 22:48probably the third, third or fourth time.
- 22:51Wow. I I still found it delightful.
- 22:55I mean, I still like like I didn't quite finish my rewatch
- 22:58and and I'm going to because even after this recording
- 23:02because I'm like, I'm hooked again, you know, So I still feel
- 23:06that. Yeah, I'm 5 Soji bottles also.
- 23:12That's so sweet. You know, it warms my heart to
- 23:14hear you guys say that because the reason why I wanted to
- 23:17rewatch the show is because I have a soft spot for this drama
- 23:21as well. I remember being really positive
- 23:24about the drama, having positive feelings, remembering it as
- 23:28being a really great, delightful, as you said, grace
- 23:31drama. I love what you said, Sarah,
- 23:35about it kind of capturing depending on when you watch it,
- 23:38right? But, you know, it does sort of
- 23:40capture a sweet spot in K dramas where it is ridiculous.
- 23:47It is very preposterous, the plot of it, but it is also
- 23:54incredibly sincere. It's so earnest.
- 23:59And I think that is why people really flock decay dramas is
- 24:03because you get ROM coms like this that are so stupid, almost
- 24:09like, you like this if you tell this plot to somebody.
- 24:12Like, yeah, so they made an Android AI robot, but a drop of
- 24:18a soda fell on the battery. And then the model, the robot
- 24:25had to step in and pretend to be the robot.
- 24:28The man falls in love with the robot.
- 24:31Like, you'd be like, it is stupid.
- 24:34It is obnoxious, but I think it's sweet.
- 24:39It's so sweet and it's funny. It's light hearted and that's
- 24:44its strength. Absolutely.
- 24:46It is incredibly unsophisticated, the humor on
- 24:50it. I love toilet humor, apparently
- 24:52because every. Freak joke that.
- 24:55Was like, oh like she farts in front of him at one point and I
- 25:00lost it. I was cackling at 2:00 AM
- 25:04because I am apparently the lowest common denominator 1
- 25:08little fart noise and that's enough to send me and the fact
- 25:12that she blames it on him and he's like I didn't.
- 25:15I fart. It is.
- 25:18So funny, and that is the type of humor in this show.
- 25:23It's very slapsticky at times and like, you know what?
- 25:27I love that. I love that it's fluffy.
- 25:31And I think that if I was being nitpicky, I would say it
- 25:36probably doesn't need to be 32 episodes or, you know, 16.
- 25:40If you're bundling episodes one and 2-3 and four, yeah, you
- 25:43could cut a few episodes out. It could be 12 episodes easily.
- 25:46If this was made today. This came at A at a funny time,
- 25:50I would say, because it has a twin drama.
- 25:53The twin drama is are you human too?
- 25:57And I freaking love when this happens like in the wild, in,
- 26:01you know, in entertainment when you get a piece of media that
- 26:05has the almost the same exact premise as something else.
- 26:08I call them twin movies, twin dramas.
- 26:11This had a twin drama and I love I'm not a robot way more than
- 26:16are you human too? I'm not.
- 26:19I'm not sure if you've seen that one or how you feel about about
- 26:22that one, but this topic of humans falling in love with
- 26:26robots, I want to say is always going to was always, you know,
- 26:33in the past sense was always very far fetched.
- 26:39But also you're like, are they predicting the future?
- 26:42Are these creators? Are these writers predicting the
- 26:44future? And unfortunately, in the big
- 26:472025, when we are living in an AI landscape of, of so many
- 26:55people using AI and reconciling with technology in their lives
- 27:00the way they've never had to before and the ethical
- 27:03implications of using AI tech or anything of the sort to have
- 27:09this drama and those like it, you know, are you human too?
- 27:14My whole of love is another 1 from 2020.
- 27:17It feels this is this could definitely happen.
- 27:22I am a huge lover of sci-fi and I think when this came out I
- 27:28along with many others probably felt this is sci-fi slash
- 27:32fantasy because you know this can't happen.
- 27:36Sadly, I think the fantasy is out the window.
- 27:37I think the fantasy. Part the same thing in my now.
- 27:42This is maybe not even science fiction at this point.
- 27:46Yeah, maybe not even sci-fi. Oh my God, I have this huge long
- 27:50paragraph that I was going to talk about later about this.
- 27:53So yes. Please go for it.
- 27:54No, no. It's the The thing is like it
- 27:58cuz you have a question later on about like is there anything
- 28:02that you don't like about this drama?
- 28:04Yeah. So the thing for me is that it's
- 28:08not that I dislike the drama more now, it's that reality has
- 28:15gotten too. Close to it, right?
- 28:16It's caught up. Yeah, it's caught up.
- 28:19It's caught up. So it's like over the past few
- 28:21years, people have become like increasingly rely on on AI to
- 28:26fill the gaps in your human connection.
- 28:29So it's like the fact that modern society has gotten more
- 28:33uncanny valley makes this the this concept a little bit like a
- 28:40little bit creepier. Do you know what I'm saying?
- 28:43Because it's like, yeah. Because, you know, Kim Mingu is
- 28:48like a representation of all the people on this planet who are
- 28:51suffering from like this very real idea of the loneliness
- 28:56epidemic. And then his relationship with
- 29:01IG3 was like how people are, you know, making friends with their
- 29:06ChatGPT doing therapy chat bots. They're creating like AI videos
- 29:14of their ideal person and like, you know, I, I click on
- 29:18Instagram reel sometimes and I'm like, oh, this is not real.
- 29:22This is AI. But like, yeah, yeah, but and
- 29:24and it throws me, but it's like people are increasingly crafting
- 29:30their ideal person using this technology.
- 29:35And so part of the charm of the drama was how fantastical it
- 29:40was. Like you when it came out, like
- 29:42you, what you said. But it's really lost that a lot,
- 29:47and it's become disturbingly prescient.
- 29:49Right. Like he doesn't.
- 29:50It doesn't. There's no magic in it anymore.
- 29:53Right, right. It's like, Oh my God, this is
- 29:55just now. This is just you're describing
- 29:57our reality. Right.
- 29:59And I guess maybe the charm of a drama is that it's so benign,
- 30:04right? The researchers who are working
- 30:06on IG3 are like, no, she's here, we're building her for community
- 30:10to build relationships and, and help people and stuff like that.
- 30:14And unfortunately while a lot of research in tech period is to
- 30:20help the human condition right. If a researcher created a robot
- 30:26that had the face of his ex-girlfriend on it, that would
- 30:30not be a benign. I'm like 9 times out of 10 that
- 30:34would be sex bot. It would be like something.
- 30:38Nonsense or something? Yeah.
- 30:43So it's like more scary to think of the implications that we're
- 30:47currently dealing with now. Yes, absolutely.
- 30:50Versus to see it play out in the drama.
- 30:52That's, I guess the fantasy of it is that it's so.
- 30:55Innocent. Innocent.
- 30:57Cheerful. Yes.
- 30:59Well meaning and honest like he was saying.
- 31:01Yeah. Exactly, that's like the sad
- 31:04part of it is that it's it would just.
- 31:06I mean would this be a ROM com if this was made today or would
- 31:10this just be you know what I'm saying?
- 31:15I just don't think they could make it today with the same
- 31:18sense of sincerity and earnestness that they had back
- 31:23then because, you know, we are living in this reality much more
- 31:28increasingly. And so I don't think that they
- 31:30could have struck this tone before because you can't just,
- 31:35like, ignore, like, all the dark parts of it that are real now.
- 31:40Yeah. I think unlike my hollow love
- 31:43and are you human too? I guess the what I am a robot
- 31:47has well, also it's just that the bulk of the time of the
- 31:52person they fall in love with and the person they spend the
- 31:54time with is the human part, is the human.
- 31:56And I think that's where are you human too?
- 31:59And my hollow love sometimes feels a bit like, well, yeah,
- 32:01but then you spend like the majority of the time falling in
- 32:04love with the robot, which I think this kind of escapes it
- 32:08Legitimate. You're an actual person.
- 32:11And they were, they were just pretending to be a robot
- 32:14pretending they're fast on that end, right?
- 32:16Which. Is why I like the deception's
- 32:17more more horrible, but I do like.
- 32:20But the yeah, the human on human yeah exactly hasn't that I'm in
- 32:23love with is actually human. So just what was your Soji
- 32:26bottle rank? I would probably give it 4 out
- 32:32of Five's whole Drew bottles and it's maybe even 4 1/2 out of
- 32:36five. I really liked it.
- 32:38I thought it was very sweet. Is incredibly rewatchable.
- 32:42I'll tell you what a lot of these re watches that I do, I
- 32:46don't remember shit. Like I go into it and I'm like,
- 32:48Oh yeah, every five episodes I'll remember.
- 32:52Oh yeah, that happened, that thing happened.
- 32:54Or I'll remember a plot beat or they'll introduce a character
- 32:57and be like, Oh yeah, they're the they're the villain.
- 33:00It's very helter Skelter. I don't have a good memory.
- 33:03I'm like you, Grace. I'm like, and once I watch it
- 33:07and I finish, I'm like, that was great.
- 33:09If I don't do a review, I forget.
- 33:10I forget it. Yeah, this one, I was re
- 33:14watching it and I remembered everything.
- 33:17Everything. I was like this is fresh.
- 33:20I don't know how, but this is fresh.
- 33:23So I'm going to take that as a good thing.
- 33:25I'm going to take that as a good sign.
- 33:27Just really enjoyed it. It was serving what it needed to
- 33:31serve. And I tend to watch a lot of
- 33:35sci-fi movies. I love sci-fi.
- 33:36I'm currently watching Alien Earth, which has a lot of
- 33:39synthetic humans in it, which is basically the say it's an AI,
- 33:44you know, robot. I love stories that are similar
- 33:50to this in the film sphere. I am, I think, one of the only
- 33:54people who love Bicentennial Man from 1999.
- 33:57I don't know if you've seen that Robin Williams movie.
- 34:01Gracious, going to suddenly remember she has actually
- 34:03watched it. OK, I think AI, artificial
- 34:08intelligence from 2001. It's a Spielberg movie.
- 34:11It's one of his lesser beloved movies because it is so
- 34:15heartbreaking and strange. AI is up there.
- 34:19Her ex Martin, yes, the movie just earlier this year,
- 34:23Companion, which is about one of these basically sex spots that,
- 34:28oh, she thinks she's human because she has all of these
- 34:30memories and it's all just programming, right?
- 34:33All of these really interesting what ifs and commentary on
- 34:41technology and our relationship to it.
- 34:44Will it, you know, take the place of human connection?
- 34:47And I think what this show does very well is that it says it
- 34:53won't take the place replace human connection.
- 34:58And I love that thesis. I love it so much because we
- 35:03need to stay together guys like we do guys.
- 35:07We need. To like hold hands and just like
- 35:10rely on each other, right and connect with each other.
- 35:14It is a very beautiful thing to, you know, have technology
- 35:20integrated in very small ways, right, that aren't going to
- 35:24completely reduce the human interactions that we have day in
- 35:28and day out. This show in particular is very
- 35:34pro human. Yes, and I mean, I even the way
- 35:39that they portray the like the friend mode where, you know, Jia
- 35:45when she's acting as Aji 3, she pushes back.
- 35:50She pushes back a lot like disagrees with Kim Mingu and
- 35:56pushes back on like the things that he's saying.
- 35:58He's like, aren't you supposed to agree with me?
- 36:00Yeah, I'm I'm your master. She's not I'm your owner, right?
- 36:05And then this is how like I could really see this is what
- 36:08humans bring. We bring perspective to each
- 36:12other. You can talk to an AI forever
- 36:15and they will like just tell you, yes, you're right.
- 36:19And like synthesize all of the things that you're saying and
- 36:22kind of repeat it back to you in a way that seems like it's new
- 36:26information, but it's actually just repeating what you're
- 36:30saying. And so you feel like, oh, this
- 36:32is such a connection because they really agree with me.
- 36:36We like, we are on the same level.
- 36:39We're like seeing eye to eye, but no.
- 36:43And we need that outside perspective of other people to
- 36:47be like, hey, actually, maybe this is not prudent.
- 36:51Or actually maybe this is an unhealthy way of thinking, you
- 36:55know? And that's what she provided as
- 36:58her human self. Yeah, yeah, I love that you had
- 37:02a reaction when I said her the movie Her from 2013.
- 37:05Yeah. That's like the closest
- 37:07approximation to it is this show, even though Joaquin
- 37:12Phoenix 100% falls in love with the computer AI.
- 37:16Yes, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, So.
- 37:18Go figure. Yes, absolutely, absolutely no,
- 37:21I I reacted that way because I just I felt that too like a
- 37:25similar vibe, that similar kind of sincerity and innocence to
- 37:29it, where it wasn't like girls creepy underlying the whole
- 37:34thing. It was more pure, you know, and
- 37:37I don't know, I don't know if we can do that anymore because so
- 37:42much of that underlying is out there now, right?
- 37:47I would say there's a lot of there's so many like robot, like
- 37:52Westworld, Blade Runner, Iron Giant, iRobot, Wally, Megan from
- 37:572022. Battlestar Galactica the.
- 38:00Wild robot. Such a freaking Transformers
- 38:02movies. Terminator.
- 38:04I mean, you throw a rock and you'll hit some sort of AI robot
- 38:11thing. It is always saying something
- 38:15about the human condition. It's totally up to
- 38:19interpretation, right? Like these, This is how I
- 38:22interpreted this show. I'm not a robot.
- 38:26Even the title, I'm not a robot. Robots are perceived to be
- 38:32controllable and it's horror when you can't control the
- 38:37robot. But in this show, it's almost a
- 38:41comment of like, I am more than just a robot, I am human.
- 38:49And it's a comforting thought more than anything in the show.
- 38:53The truth is better, right? Like you're not falling in love
- 38:57with a robot, you're actually falling in love with a human.
- 38:58And I'm not a robot. It's very sweet.
- 39:02So just one fun fact about the series, even though we love it,
- 39:07the series was a commercial failure, only averaging 3.22% in
- 39:12audience share and received the lowest viewership ratings in its
- 39:15time slot throughout its run. That was really disheartening to
- 39:20read. When I was doing my research for
- 39:22I'm Not a Robot, and I was like, what else was going on?
- 39:26Like around this time, I was around this time, I was watching
- 39:29currently airing shows and I was like what the hell were people
- 39:31watching from December to January of this year?
- 39:36So the number one show was My Golden Life.
- 39:41This had 41 to 45% nationwide viewership in Korea and that one
- 39:50is like I think 52 episodes long.
- 39:53So it was one of those Weekender, but it was a high
- 39:57episode count. Very soap opera E kind of show.
- 40:03And then they also were airing Return which had 15 to 17%
- 40:08viewership. Black Knight, The man who guards
- 40:11me from KBS that also had about 13% viewership, 2 Cops,
- 40:16Jugglers, a Korean Odyssey. So these were some of the other
- 40:20shows that were completely obliterating.
- 40:23I'm not a robot in the ratings race, but I honestly think that
- 40:29was so sad because the show is really good.
- 40:33Yeah. And I wonder what it says about
- 40:37maybe because, like, you know, Western viewers by and large,
- 40:41the people that I've spoken to this, people who've created
- 40:44content online that I've seen, like everyone says this is an
- 40:48underrated drama because it was such a flop in Korea.
- 40:52But for Western viewers, I don't think it's underrated.
- 40:55Like, I think everyone across the board kind of loves it.
- 40:59So. So I wonder where the disconnect
- 41:02was with Korean society or whatever.
- 41:06Yeah, it'd be so interesting to be able to find out, but I, I
- 41:12have no idea. Like why culturally it might
- 41:15not. Might not have resonated.
- 41:17Exactly. I don't know.
- 41:18Yeah, it's. Just maybe a timing thing or
- 41:20something, isn't it as well? I think Healer is another one of
- 41:24those dramas, isn't it? But like it's really beloved of
- 41:26international audiences, but was not it's still not, I think seen
- 41:30as a classic and domestic audiences and it's like, guys,
- 41:34it's heal outs. What's wrong?
- 41:38Now I have to look up the ratings for healer.
- 41:41Yeah. And out of all of these other
- 41:42dramas that you've listed that were, you know, airing at the
- 41:45same time and blowing I Am Not a Robot out of the water, ratings
- 41:49wise. I only have heard of a Korean
- 41:52Odyssey. Yeah.
- 41:53So that's also one of the lower ones.
- 41:56So I'm like, huh, interesting. In terms of like the maybe the
- 42:01cultural difference or the marketing difference or I don't,
- 42:05I don't even know. For healer.
- 42:07So Healer was averaging about 8 to 9% viewership.
- 42:14Not the worst, but no, Devin. I mean, it barely broke 10%,
- 42:19Yeah, in the ratings. So yeah, I wouldn't say that's a
- 42:23tremendous runaway success either.
- 42:26Strange. My drama list, which I guess is
- 42:29like what I hold as a kind of proxy to international audiences
- 42:32for dramas, Asian dramas I'm Not a Robot, is ranked in their
- 42:36popularity list at 24. Oh.
- 42:39My God. That's pretty high, yeah.
- 42:42So not at all underrate. No, I mean, that's what I'm
- 42:44saying. Like, yeah, yeah.
- 42:46So I think we have a few quibbles and things that we
- 42:50would love to talk about at length in the spoiler section.
- 42:53So we've already given our ratings 52 fives and 1/4 and 1/2
- 42:58I, I don't know, 5 sure. 5. So peer.
- 43:04Pressure. It is for your pressure, but
- 43:07we're going to get into it right after this.
- 43:10Excuse me? I can't, you know.
- 43:16I have no. Oh, sorry.
- 43:19This crossing what? All right, so we're on the other
- 43:27side of spoilers. We are going to spoil a little
- 43:30bit of what happens and I'm not a robot and talk about some
- 43:33quibbles, some picky nits that we have.
- 43:36And one of those was a very interesting question about GS
- 43:41agency in the show. And I would love for Sarah to
- 43:45talk a little bit more about that because I think that's a
- 43:47complaint that people have is that she just doesn't make a lot
- 43:52of the choices, the big choices in the show.
- 43:56Yeah, so I think the criticism comes from people that feel like
- 44:00she's been pushed by other male characters into doing what she
- 44:04has to do. So she doesn't want to be RG3,
- 44:09but because of her financial situation.
- 44:12So she's, she's an inventor actually, she's struggling to
- 44:16develop her career in making a business out of the things that
- 44:19she's invented. And her brother is forcing her
- 44:22to be financially more independent and and to stop
- 44:25pursuing all of this invention stuff, which is fantasy world.
- 44:30Yeah, a pipe dream. And that says she's got
- 44:33financial issues on one side pushed by her elder brother.
- 44:35Then she's effectively this ex-boyfriend of hers mate a
- 44:41robot that looks like her. It's not even that it looks like
- 44:45her. No, no, it's exactly her.
- 44:46It is her. Yeah.
- 44:49It's basically her in in robot form.
- 44:52And he desperately needs her to come in and save, you know, his
- 44:58invention that he's poured his heart and soul into.
- 45:01And he offers her money for her to be able to do it.
- 45:05And so that's kind of where we get the set up.
- 45:07So again, the, you know, the criticism can be that she, it is
- 45:10pushed into the situation by circumstances out of her
- 45:14control, but by men in her life. And then later on in the show,
- 45:19we see that she develops feelings for Kaminku.
- 45:23Kaminku develops feelings for her and she actually wants to
- 45:27tell him, you know, that she isn't, that she is not a robot.
- 45:30There is a really lovely scene where he gets drunk.
- 45:34They play this drinking game and he wishes that she was not a
- 45:38robot and he falls asleep when drunk and she kind of tells him
- 45:41I'm not a robot, which is what Jess alluded to.
- 45:44And but then again, because of circumstances by this, you know,
- 45:51ridiculous plot that they can't tell him that she's a robot
- 45:56because it might trigger this human allergy that he has and
- 46:00kill him. So they kind of decide or she
- 46:04gets pushed into not revealing this secret, the big secret in
- 46:09the show, right? The one that we know is going to
- 46:11come and then do everything right from the start.
- 46:14And again, she's put in this situation where she has to
- 46:17continue to lie to him and then she needs to go and up sticks
- 46:22and leave her home and her city because she he doesn't want to
- 46:29be found by him. And so she escapes to like a
- 46:31beach side resort where her is it her grandma has a it's her
- 46:34sister in law's. Grandmother.
- 46:37Oh, her sister in But anyway, like all of these
- 46:50things that happened to her are not because she has had control
- 46:55of the situation and they feel like it's not very feminist
- 47:00drama in that way. And I think there are some
- 47:02things about the drama that are are not feminist that we can
- 47:06quibble about. But I was interested in your
- 47:08guys views about whether you think she does have agency and
- 47:11whether you feel like this character is kind of just driven
- 47:14by external forces and the men in her life.
- 47:17I. Think that she does have agency.
- 47:20There are definitely moments where, you know, there are two
- 47:24men fighting over this quote UN quote robot and they're very
- 47:29much like, I'm your master. No, I'm your master.
- 47:32And like, you know, early on there were some like jokes about
- 47:37her chest looking. Bigger.
- 47:39Yes, I'm like, I mean, actually now, now that I think of it,
- 47:43that having been so early on in this, in the run of this drama,
- 47:48I wonder if that turned people off like, oh, this is going to
- 47:50be how this drama is like where we're sexual specializing this
- 47:54robot. Well, that's the thing that's so
- 47:58right. Could have been, really.
- 48:01It could have been really bad. And that those, yeah, those
- 48:04jokes came early on. And then they petered out
- 48:09completely. Yeah, right.
- 48:10But if you had been a Korean watcher of this, and then you,
- 48:15you're giving this drama a shot and you're like, oh, my
- 48:18goodness, they're making jokes about her chest and blah, blah.
- 48:21And this is feeling a little bit weird and creepy.
- 48:25And then you didn't continue and give it a chance.
- 48:27Then you would just have walked away thinking I saved myself
- 48:31time from watching something kind of sketch.
- 48:33Kind of icky, yeah, right. Right.
- 48:35So anyways, so there are definitely those moments and
- 48:38stuff like that where I will, I will absolutely quibble about it
- 48:42not being feminist or, or whatever, but I very much felt
- 48:46that like she was not controlled by the circumstances in a way
- 48:51that took away her agency fully. Like I felt like she had agency
- 48:56in that she was continuously pursuing her own goals.
- 49:02All of these things, all of these situations where she was
- 49:04like, this is not my favorite thing, but I'm doing this so
- 49:09that I can take my next step toward doing the thing that is
- 49:13my dream. Yes.
- 49:15Like, even when she ran away, she was like, OK, I'm, you know,
- 49:19I'm going to go to the seafood restaurant for a little bit and
- 49:22then I'm going to immigrate or not.
- 49:24I'm going to study abroad in Australia.
- 49:27And that's going to help me build my English.
- 49:30And I'm going to study. I'm going to build my, you know,
- 49:34resume and my ability to further my own goals in the end.
- 49:39And like, you know, at every point where she butts heads
- 49:43against men who want her to do what they want her to do, she
- 49:48either fights back and doesn't do what they want, or she will
- 49:53think about it and be like, is there something that I am going
- 49:56to get out of this that I really want?
- 50:00And whether that's because she cares for the well-being of, you
- 50:04know, this person who was thrust into the situation of bonding
- 50:08with her because he thought it was a robot or because she
- 50:13thinks that it will advance her career goals, I feel like she
- 50:18does. Have agency, Yeah, I would agree
- 50:21with you, Grace, that I feel like she does have agency,
- 50:24especially in how she handles the situations.
- 50:27You know, she didn't do she? She was, I think people think
- 50:32she has no interesting because she was taken advantage of,
- 50:35right? She was given a lot of cash to
- 50:41masquerade as this AG3 robot, but the cash wouldn't have
- 50:46worked unless she needed it. She was desperate to pay off
- 50:50this loan and get some money. So the ex was taking advantage
- 50:55of her in that situation. That doesn't mean she has no
- 50:59agency, right? Like that just exposes disguise
- 51:03a little bit nefarious. He's desperate but he's also
- 51:07using the money to lure her in to do this thing for him.
- 51:12I think when people say she has no agencies because she she
- 51:15wasn't told the truth right of the fact that the ex, I'm just
- 51:19going to keep calling him the ex.
- 51:22But anyway, the ex knew about Kimiku's condition and that
- 51:27actually sending her in to replace IG3 could have killed
- 51:33him. Yeah.
- 51:35And she never was Privy to that information.
- 51:38He lied to her. Yeah.
- 51:41Surprised to me that he has this condition then, that he's
- 51:44allergic to humans or whatever. She's justifiably upset.
- 51:48But that doesn't, again, not necessarily mean that she has no
- 51:52agency. She has agency with the
- 51:53information that she has right within her circumstances.
- 51:58And what's annoying is those little things right That they're
- 52:03making fun of her bus size that he has dressed.
- 52:08I can't get over really, honestly, the fucking fact that
- 52:12he made a robot that looks like his ex-girlfriend.
- 52:16I. Know that's really the worst
- 52:19he's. So disturbing on so many levels.
- 52:22I'm like, lock him up. But at the same time, I'm sorry,
- 52:28I know it's super problematic, but like the way that it played
- 52:31out and you know, they actually rehabilitated him pretty well.
- 52:35Yes, I would agree. So that's like the charm of the
- 52:39show. Like the magic of it is that you
- 52:41have this guy in my notes. I have what a freak in all
- 52:44calfs, what a freak. And today this is so it's so
- 52:48prescient because in today's world, if some sort of AI used
- 52:53your likeness, your voice, which this happens all the time now.
- 52:59Like people are like, oh, I found this video to myself
- 53:01selling this product. I've never, this isn't me.
- 53:04Like this is AI. So it's disconcerting that the
- 53:07show predicted the future. And if it were me, I'd sue his
- 53:11ass into oblivion, right? Like I wouldn't just be like,
- 53:14oh, yeah, I'll do this part time job for you and be this robot.
- 53:19He not only made this robot that looks like her, he puts it in
- 53:24this little little dress that they keep calling pink.
- 53:28I think it's orange. I don't know what you it's.
- 53:30Like coral. It's coral.
- 53:31It's like. A orange dress.
- 53:34They keep like, keep saying it's a pink dress.
- 53:36I'm like, what is What is going on?
- 53:38What are they saying? Yeah.
- 53:41So anyway, he put her in this little mini dress and I'm just
- 53:45like, yeah. And then she's supposed to be
- 53:47this robot who's impervious to cold to the elements.
- 53:50And this poor girl's walking around trying to pretend she's
- 53:53not freezing her ass off. And these were the little things
- 53:57talking about her battery size, which if in the real world the
- 54:02bus size would have been bigger regardless, like on the robot,
- 54:07you know, I was like. Oh God.
- 54:10Oh yeah. So many things, but the show and
- 54:14the team behind AG Three are very protective of AG3.
- 54:19They love AG 3 and anytime Kim INQ gets close to her, they can
- 54:25see the footage and they're like reviewing the gameplay and
- 54:28they're like he's a perv, he's a pervert because he gets closer
- 54:35in various times and that makes them go no way we have to get
- 54:41Audi 3 out of there. We got to get Totia out of there
- 54:44because he's once more out of this robot, right?
- 54:49So I feel like those are infractions plus the like course
- 54:54correction that the show takes to kind of ease you into this,
- 54:59what can be seen as very icky from the get go, but it's
- 55:05interesting. It's all very interesting
- 55:06because when they say they're gonna change Audi 3's face,
- 55:11they're like, that was the whole thing.
- 55:12They're gonna change the face finally.
- 55:14And Kim Minkyu is like, no, you can't change the face.
- 55:21That is interesting because if everything is the same but the
- 55:27face of the robot is different, is it the same robot?
- 55:31The same identity was the same input, same programming, same
- 55:35responses? Still got friend mode and all
- 55:37this stuff? Presumably, but he's very averse
- 55:41to changing anything about ID 3. Yeah, but I think that was that
- 55:46was really during that moment of weakness where he's like, I miss
- 55:50her so much. Like I've reset her and like
- 55:54cleared her memory. So like she doesn't have this
- 55:59personality that was developed in cooperation with me or by
- 56:05training with me. But like I want to, I want to
- 56:08turn it all back so that I can have my friend back.
- 56:11Yeah. And then I thought it was so
- 56:15insightful when the real IG3 said, are you the same person
- 56:19that you were back when you started training, training IG3
- 56:24training me that first time, he's like, no, I'm so different.
- 56:28I've changed so much. And she's like, then you'll
- 56:31never be able to meet that same person again because yours
- 56:35you're like, we, we've all grown.
- 56:38Right, right. So.
- 56:40You're not in that same starting point either, Like you can't
- 56:42give me the same inputs. I love that.
- 56:46I love that. I This is really almost a
- 56:49tangent but sort of related. I was re watching Bridesmaids
- 56:52the other day and you know how when they go play tennis it's a
- 56:57Rose Byrne and what's her face? And they have this small little
- 57:03back and forth. I mean, I don't know, do people
- 57:05really change? I think they do.
- 57:08Yeah, but I mean, they still stay who they are, pretty much.
- 57:11I think we change all the time I.
- 57:14Think we stay the same but grow I guess a little bit I.
- 57:18Think if you're growing then you're changing.
- 57:21But I mean, we're changing from who we are, which we always stay
- 57:23as. Not really.
- 57:25I don't think so. I think so.
- 57:27I know. And this whole like stupid
- 57:32little interaction I feel is related somehow to what you're
- 57:38talking about that from a technical standpoint, RG3 is
- 57:42like, yeah, the inputs going to be different.
- 57:45The training is not the going to be the same.
- 57:47You can never get the same exact friend that you had before
- 57:52because you are the user is different.
- 57:57She's right. Like he's never going to get the
- 57:59same exact, you know, programming that he trained into
- 58:04her before. Yeah.
- 58:05And that's how life is like for for humans.
- 58:10That's how it is too. You know, you will grow, you
- 58:13will change. And if you try and, like, reset
- 58:16yourself, the exact things that happened to you have made you
- 58:21into who you are today. Yeah.
- 58:23Have contributed to who you are, your, your essence.
- 58:26And if you don't do what happened, you will be different.
- 58:31Yeah, and and it it says a lot about like human relationships
- 58:35too. Like even though this was like
- 58:36the actual robot saying this little nugget of wisdom, it just
- 58:40like, you know, it just made me reflect on like, oh, the people
- 58:43that I have been friends with. And, you know, some
- 58:48relationships fall by the wayside, you know, through life.
- 58:51And it's like, you know, you're going through a different stage
- 58:54of life. You're you're a different
- 58:55person, you know, at each of these moments.
- 58:58So like the the relationships you built are, you know, very
- 59:02situational too, you know? Yeah.
- 59:04And that's why it's like so precious and rare to have a
- 59:07relationship that continues to grow with you all through life.
- 59:11And, you know, you continue to be close and, you know, getting
- 59:16older. I feel like I have, I treasure
- 59:19those, I treasure those relationships so much more now
- 59:22because I, I see like, you know, that's not a common thing to be
- 59:28able to meet and build a bond and continue to build that while
- 59:32you're growing and changing in different ways, in your own
- 59:35separate ways, you know? Going back to I think Gracie
- 59:40said that he was changed or redeemed.
- 59:43The X was by the end of the show.
- 59:46Yeah. Would you guys want to elaborate
- 59:48on that and how he is? So I think, you know, through
- 59:53the course of the the first half of the show, you can tell that
- 59:57he has very little emotional depth and very little
- 1:00:02introspection. But as you know things, all the
- 1:00:06events unfold. He starts asking questions like,
- 1:00:09oh, where did I go wrong? What happened?
- 1:00:13And his fellow researcher, you know, the woman researcher.
- 1:00:17Pie. Pie.
- 1:00:18That's right. That's right.
- 1:00:20Do we even know her real name? No.
- 1:00:24Π yeah π Pi asked these kind of searching questions for him to
- 1:00:28get him to look into his own soul, you know, and reflect.
- 1:00:34And you see, like. And he figures out that the
- 1:00:39reason he made this robot was not not necessarily to replace
- 1:00:43this ex that he hadn't gotten closure with, to replace just
- 1:00:49the form of this set, because you could interpret it like
- 1:00:52that, Like he he wanted to replace this ex and have her
- 1:00:56tell him that she loves him and be controlled completely by him.
- 1:01:01And that's just like, it's such a bad look.
- 1:01:04But what he realizes through the course of the events of the show
- 1:01:08is that what he really wanted was to figure out why things
- 1:01:13didn't work out to like get closure, to like learn and grow.
- 1:01:17And then that's, I mean, that's sweet.
- 1:01:19That's sweet and pure and you're like, OK, so you're not the huge
- 1:01:23terrible creep who's building a robotic sex.
- 1:01:28Toy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:31I would say it's funny that you you say that because absolutely
- 1:01:34that was he wanted closure. He didn't understand
- 1:01:37fundamentally why they broke up, why she broke up with him.
- 1:01:44That was basically an equation he couldn't had no solution for.
- 1:01:50And so his solution was, well, I'll pour myself into my life's
- 1:01:55work, create this robot and put Georgia's face on the robot.
- 1:02:00But I feel like he never would have come to this realization
- 1:02:05that he basically initiated a break up with his own.
- 1:02:09Like stupid ass immaturity. Yeah.
- 1:02:13Had he not had Tojiah come back in his life?
- 1:02:17Yeah, right. Like, the closure didn't
- 1:02:19necessarily come because Aji 3 existed.
- 1:02:22It was because she needed to replace Aji 3.
- 1:02:25And now he's butting heads with her again.
- 1:02:28And her. It was the human presence of
- 1:02:33Tojiah that really made him think.
- 1:02:36Because ID 3 was never gonna ask the right questions, right?
- 1:02:40And you know, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:02:42Like the AI doesn't push back right?
- 1:02:44Just says you're right master. Yes, exactly.
- 1:02:48Yeah, right. It's stroking his ego and Dodia
- 1:02:51never does that. Yeah, so even though but set
- 1:02:56things in motion, ID 3 is existence, set things in motion.
- 1:02:59Yeah, the robot itself, the programming, the AI, whatever
- 1:03:03you want to call it, was never going to give him closure.
- 1:03:08Yeah. But I think that a really key
- 1:03:11component was that he was working through this process,
- 1:03:15this emotional process in the kind of in the community of his
- 1:03:21fellow researchers who also care for this robot and for him.
- 1:03:26I don't think he would have found a way to reflect on
- 1:03:29himself and grow if he hadn't gotten their input.
- 1:03:35Also because they were like, what are you doing?
- 1:03:37You're being a jerk. You know, like, whereas you
- 1:03:40know, when you're in a relationship with someone,
- 1:03:43especially in their situation where he was clearly older than
- 1:03:46her, so they didn't run in the same circles, like, you know,
- 1:03:50who's going to push back about like how he's treating his
- 1:03:53girlfriend? But it's because they were all
- 1:03:55kind of peers and they were close and they were working
- 1:03:59together that they had the level of they were be able to be that
- 1:04:04honest and vulnerable with each other, you know?
- 1:04:07So yeah, definitely it, it highlights that thing you were
- 1:04:10saying earlier about how this show is definitely pro human.
- 1:04:14Like as much as AI can help us, AI can be a really useful tool
- 1:04:20in so many circumstances. We.
- 1:04:23We need each other. Yeah, so you touched on
- 1:04:27something that I wanted to bring up, which was the found family
- 1:04:29aspect of this show, which was very evident upon rewatch.
- 1:04:33I was like, Oh yeah, I forgot that Kim and Q is assimilated
- 1:04:38into this research group and and Chodia and they all have this
- 1:04:43wonderful relationship, this rapport.
- 1:04:46And by the end of the show, you're like, Oh yeah, they're
- 1:04:47like family. They're like this quasi family.
- 1:04:51I would love to know your thoughts on that, how it worked
- 1:04:53out for you guys on your end. Yeah, I really love the aspect,
- 1:04:58this aspect of the show. And again, same as you, just
- 1:05:01like I think it came more to the fore when I was watching it on a
- 1:05:04rewatch. I think the first time around,
- 1:05:06because I'm such a romance fan, I was really swept up with their
- 1:05:09romance and everything to do with because obviously I didn't
- 1:05:12know how it was going to pan out.
- 1:05:13So like everything was focused on the main couple.
- 1:05:16But on rewatch, obviously you can chill out about what's going
- 1:05:18to happen with them. You're not going to happen.
- 1:05:20So like I was, I was enjoying their interactions more.
- 1:05:24I really loved that little nerdy the robot gang.
- 1:05:27I loved how they all had very strong characterisations right
- 1:05:32from the start. So they were they were all nerdy
- 1:05:36robot engineers, but they were all different kinds.
- 1:05:38And then we also had, you know, GR's best friend who came in as
- 1:05:44a like a statement also. I love, I love the actress as
- 1:05:50well. I love her character.
- 1:05:51I think she was great. And then obviously she came in
- 1:05:54and mixed things up. She was like there was a semi
- 1:05:56like love triangle thing going on with the two engineers.
- 1:05:59And then there was also our homebeaker like Professor
- 1:06:03Holmes, like relationship, budding relationship with π as
- 1:06:07well. And that was all kind of
- 1:06:08developing. But at the heart of it was just
- 1:06:11at the heart of actually the drama anyway as well and talks a
- 1:06:14lot about human connections as well.
- 1:06:15It's just Kim Minke's loneliness and all the years that he's
- 1:06:21grown up by himself, building House of Cards and having this
- 1:06:26human allergy and never having any kind of connections.
- 1:06:30And he's learning to love, Yeah, but he's also learning to be a
- 1:06:33friend, right? So actually then there's lots of
- 1:06:36scenes of him creating food and them playing games with him and
- 1:06:40he not really knowing how to interact or how to join in.
- 1:06:44And then we see that actually he's growing both as, you know,
- 1:06:47somebody's partner love interest, but also as a friend
- 1:06:51and learning to be with his own peers and people that are not
- 1:06:55like, I mean, technically Santa Maria team are only.
- 1:07:01Yeah, exactly. So he is still the CEO.
- 1:07:05But, you know, like they they actually have a real rival, like
- 1:07:08a kind of hate, love, hate kind of like thing at the beginning.
- 1:07:12And it's just all coming together.
- 1:07:13And actually one of my like mine and minor little quibbles is
- 1:07:17right at the end of the drama, we end with a scene of our leads
- 1:07:20together and what I really wanted, and I still wanted it
- 1:07:23the second time around for us to follow them, to walk into the
- 1:07:26house and everybody's there. Like the whole cast is there.
- 1:07:30And then we can leave them because we know not only has
- 1:07:33he's got his love interest and they're all great, but like he's
- 1:07:36got his little fun family and they're all waiting for him.
- 1:07:40Because they had all these people that we had seen this
- 1:07:44troop of the found family and they're late for something, yes,
- 1:07:49and they need to leave and they need to get to where they need
- 1:07:52to go. And it's the reunion party
- 1:07:54because he's being. He's out of military.
- 1:07:58Out of Yeah, yeah. Because he finally qualified.
- 1:08:01I was like, OK, where's the party?
- 1:08:03Yeah, there's. A party that I know is
- 1:08:06happening. Yeah, yeah, because then is
- 1:08:08Kanki Young's character, right? Because his friend, his
- 1:08:10childhood friend, and then his childhood love interest.
- 1:08:13And so everybody's preparing, everybody's getting ready.
- 1:08:16You're right. I forgot about that bit.
- 1:08:18And then we don't see the actual.
- 1:08:21It's just like, guys. What the hell man?
- 1:08:24I love that you brought up the House of Cards, which was an
- 1:08:27impressive tower of cards playing cards and she knocks it
- 1:08:33over. I can't episode like 5 or 6.
- 1:08:36The. Quote that I have from him was
- 1:08:38really touching because the tower was so large that it was
- 1:08:43blocking like a giant window in the house.
- 1:08:46Kim Ming Q says to her, When you knocked it down, I was really
- 1:08:49mad. This window happens to bring in
- 1:08:51a lot of sunlight. I really love sitting beneath
- 1:08:54this window. All this time I kept thinking
- 1:08:56that it was dark but I never thought that it was because of
- 1:08:59the cards. Make sure you input this face,
- 1:09:01this emotion Adi 3 because you brought back sunshine into the
- 1:09:06remaining part of my life. Your master's very happy right
- 1:09:08now. And like guys, she knocked down
- 1:09:13a House of Cards. And I'm crying how it's so
- 1:09:18touching. It's so touching to see him
- 1:09:20realize I do need companionship and I do need someone to
- 1:09:25freaking open the blinds here and get rid of some of this,
- 1:09:30this obsession with the past that he has.
- 1:09:34He's been grieving for all of these years for his parents and
- 1:09:40feeling extremely lonely. Like you said, Sarah, he's so
- 1:09:43love starved. Yeah, that knocking over a House
- 1:09:47of Cards has him contemplating the fact that he's been living
- 1:09:52in proverbial darkness all these years.
- 1:09:55I'm like, Oh my God. It's really.
- 1:09:59It's so deep on one side and and then so shallow on the other
- 1:10:03side. And the balance is again really
- 1:10:07interesting in this show. I feel like this K drama should
- 1:10:11have been AB but didn't accept the grade should have been AB
- 1:10:15Show was like, no, we're not doing all that.
- 1:10:20The making Ki Minku a human aspect of the show is super
- 1:10:25compelling to me. Yeah.
- 1:10:27I think that the House of Cards is really a great, you know,
- 1:10:31image like symbolism. Also because this was the
- 1:10:35beginning of him realizing it's not that all of humanity is
- 1:10:40untrustworthy and has rejected him.
- 1:10:43He has bit by bit built up this barrier, built up the shield.
- 1:10:48And he's been slowly rejecting everybody in his life.
- 1:10:53All of humanity doesn't give anyone a chance.
- 1:10:56And he's been reinforcing that shield, that that barrier like
- 1:11:01this this whole time. It's like, oh, maybe that
- 1:11:05barrier needs to come down, you know?
- 1:11:08Yeah, I love that symbolism. His condition is psychosomatic.
- 1:11:13It is completely because of his psyche, because of his distrust
- 1:11:19and the hypocrisy he witnessed as a child, the callousness that
- 1:11:22he witnessed at his parents funeral.
- 1:11:25The distrust that he feels completely takes over his life
- 1:11:28in a physical way, like he is physically making himself I'll.
- 1:11:33Yeah. I thought that was a smart
- 1:11:37choice because if it was a real illness where they're going full
- 1:11:43send on, Yeah, he's 100% allergic to humans.
- 1:11:47And you know, there's no really cure for this.
- 1:11:51The cure was always mental. It was always love.
- 1:11:55Always. Love.
- 1:11:56Yes and I'm like oh that's so sweet.
- 1:12:02He was so messed up for so long though.
- 1:12:05You know the intro? The intro of the show is really
- 1:12:08funny. He's going to like a medical.
- 1:12:12Examination for. Yeah.
- 1:12:14Examination for the Yeah. For the military service and
- 1:12:18they are incredulous that he has this condition that doesn't
- 1:12:22allow him to serve in the military.
- 1:12:24He purposely touches one of them to show his reaction, his body's
- 1:12:31reaction, which is hysterical because it's at the same time
- 1:12:33it's a thirst trap because he's hearing like a black wife eater
- 1:12:39with like arms out like he's and it's funny and again, sexy at
- 1:12:46the same time and like disturbing because you know, you
- 1:12:50see the skin reaction on him and stuff.
- 1:12:52The hives and like the hives and yeah.
- 1:12:55His Airways closing up and stuff and you're just like, oh, this
- 1:13:00is serious. It's funny that it's full circle
- 1:13:04that the final scene is that he has completed his military
- 1:13:08service. I love that, yeah.
- 1:13:11I didn't expect it to be full circle.
- 1:13:13That was one thing that I was like, oh right, like he actually
- 1:13:16did complete the military service and it's a two year time
- 1:13:19jump at the end of the show. Funny that I mentioned W2 Worlds
- 1:13:22Apart as another show that the director directed.
- 1:13:27He's watching W2 World Apart at one point in this K drama.
- 1:13:32Do you remember is that is that what it was?
- 1:13:35Because I paused it at that point to try to figure out what
- 1:13:38this drama was. And I recognize the lead.
- 1:13:43I use Boyfriend. He's not my type so.
- 1:13:45I don't remember his name. Yes, he's on Sook and Han Kyodu.
- 1:13:51OK, OK, star in W2 Worlds Apart. And so that show has a very
- 1:13:57famous prison kissing scene and he's watching that scene because
- 1:14:02he's pondering kissing someone for the first time.
- 1:14:06He's so love starved and I'm like, Oh my God, it's W2 Worlds
- 1:14:10Apart. So that's where the intertwining
- 1:14:12is. Is that the director also
- 1:14:14directed W2 Worlds Apart? I love those Easter eggs.
- 1:14:18Yeah, it's a good Easter egg, Yeah.
- 1:14:20Yeah. Well, the other thing I thought
- 1:14:21the other thing on rewatch that I saw was quite present was so
- 1:14:25that their meet cute, so to speak, is that he has
- 1:14:29commissioned her to go and buy this really rare model thing.
- 1:14:32And she goes and stands in the queue and waits really long time
- 1:14:36for to get it and that. But at the same time, like this,
- 1:14:39this kid with a corn dog with ketchup on it swipes the box and
- 1:14:43so it's Macky anyway. So she delivers this figurine to
- 1:14:46him, and it's not in perfect condition because it's got this
- 1:14:49swipe of ketchup on it. And he's really annoyed with her
- 1:14:52because he's like, I'm not paying full price for this.
- 1:14:54And she's like, what? Like, you know, I queued for
- 1:14:56this, blah, blah, blah. And he says this line to her,
- 1:14:58like, I don't forgive anyone who lies to me.
- 1:15:03And I missed it the first time around.
- 1:15:04And the second time around, I was like, oh, that is just, you
- 1:15:08know, foreshadowing everything that comes in the backup of the
- 1:15:13drama, which, yeah, like, as I hadn't spotted it, I thought,
- 1:15:16that's so good. And obviously, we then know him
- 1:15:18later that it's, you know, part of his back story and all of the
- 1:15:21trauma that has caused this human allergies around being
- 1:15:24lied to. But then that is precisely what
- 1:15:27causes massive schism in that back half of the the show.
- 1:15:33And I think that's for me. I think for me, like I am a huge
- 1:15:35ROM com fan anyway, but I especially love ROM coms like
- 1:15:39this that are really funny and almost slapsticky and silly at
- 1:15:45the start. And then the back half get
- 1:15:47really angsty. And that's the arc of I Am Not a
- 1:15:51Robot because it is so preposterous and so, so silly.
- 1:15:55And the tonicity and the fart jokes are there.
- 1:15:57And, and so you think you, you're starting this drama that
- 1:16:01is going a certain direction, right?
- 1:16:03And then midway through the show, this thing, this lie that
- 1:16:08we always knew was going to happen gets exposed.
- 1:16:12And then it all just starts peeling apart.
- 1:16:15And that's when you're just like, oh, it's not silly and
- 1:16:19funny and far Chase anymore. It keeps making me cry.
- 1:16:23And it's like, oh, my God, this drummer is really special for me
- 1:16:27because of that arc it took me. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:30Yeah, I agree. Were there any scenes before the
- 1:16:34big reveal that it was all a lie that we want to talk through,
- 1:16:38that you were loving or that were your favorites before?
- 1:16:42We kind of go toward the back half of the show when like shit
- 1:16:46hits the fan. The scene that I have a love
- 1:16:49hate relationship with is the one where he resets IG 30.
- 1:16:54The reset. Yeah.
- 1:16:56Because and. Because on the one hand, it
- 1:16:59seems so incredibly cruel, like, to make him reset, Like, it's so
- 1:17:06cruel. It's like making him kill his
- 1:17:09love because like, I mean, and we don't think about this very
- 1:17:12much, but recently, it just keeps coming up for me, like,
- 1:17:16where your memories are, who you are.
- 1:17:19Yeah. One way it came up for me
- 1:17:23recently was my daughter is in a Dungeons and Dragons class.
- 1:17:27It's one of her electives in middle school.
- 1:17:30Wow. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:17:32And. And her teacher is the dungeon
- 1:17:35master. And apparently the storyline in
- 1:17:38one of the classes was that some character, or maybe all of the
- 1:17:41characters had lost their memories and.
- 1:17:44And she was like, she was, you know how?
- 1:17:48Yeah. Like you, you see your.
- 1:17:50Well, I see my kids after school.
- 1:17:51And then I'm like, how was your day?
- 1:17:53And she was like, it was good, except.
- 1:17:56The campaign. Except yeah, I don't understand
- 1:18:00why she had to have us lose our memories.
- 1:18:03It's like then we aren't us anymore.
- 1:18:06Yeah, and. I was like, Oh my God, this is
- 1:18:10so true. And like, yeah, it I mean and
- 1:18:13it's and for and people. Don't like the amnesia trove?
- 1:18:18Right, right. But I mean, and I think that's
- 1:18:20really that, that is it. It's like you're eliminating
- 1:18:24this person, the personality. Yeah, you know.
- 1:18:28And so it's like killing them. And so, yeah, so I both love it
- 1:18:33because it is such an emotionally impactful scene.
- 1:18:37And I know that it's necessary for the storytelling, but I also
- 1:18:42hate it because in real life, that's just like, it's just so
- 1:18:45cruel, you know? Yeah, I agree.
- 1:18:47Yeah, I totally agree. Especially after he has on on
- 1:18:53both of their sides. They're so essential to each
- 1:18:55other now, you know, all the things.
- 1:18:57They miss each other when they're not next to each other.
- 1:19:00They can't wait to see each other.
- 1:19:02At the beginning of the day, he says I can't live without you.
- 1:19:06He wishes you were human. She says the famous I'm not I'm
- 1:19:09not a robot line to him. At the same time he's like
- 1:19:13trying to marry his first love. Like there's like an on and off
- 1:19:16again thing so that the other girl.
- 1:19:19That's one of the poignant scenes for me, I think, is when
- 1:19:22he goes on a date with the first love and he tries to do the
- 1:19:27things that he did with RG3 and he kind of was trying to
- 1:19:32recreate them right in human form.
- 1:19:34I mean, this is so like the topic of what we're talking
- 1:19:36about, but it's like I practiced human connection with my robot
- 1:19:40and we did these things together.
- 1:19:42And so now I'm going to do them now with an actual human that
- 1:19:46I'm trying to fall in love with. Weirdly.
- 1:19:49And then not the same. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:19:52And he's and he's trying really hard and she's watching him as
- 1:19:57well, right? Because she's got to be
- 1:19:58physically near him to do the whole counteract the human
- 1:20:01allergy thing. And he's forcing himself to eat
- 1:20:04food that has saliva from other people.
- 1:20:05It's all that kind of stuff. And it's just like, so
- 1:20:08heartbreaking. It's so.
- 1:20:10Painful and that's where it's beginning to switch this drama
- 1:20:12like it didn't you know, it just slightly started to turn a
- 1:20:15corner, didn't it? Because it started to introduce
- 1:20:18these small things, like things that Grace was talking about,
- 1:20:20but also these are the little things of him trying to be
- 1:20:23trying to find his connection in the outside world, having
- 1:20:28thought that he'd practice with his row button and could do it.
- 1:20:30Yeah, that he was good with having her as a proxy and the
- 1:20:35fact that he also loves her inventions.
- 1:20:40Oh my. God I love that.
- 1:20:42This is really emotional for me. I don't know why this touches me
- 1:20:45so much that Todia has had no support in her passion in
- 1:20:52pursuing her inventions since her dad died.
- 1:20:55Well, not, not like active rejection of it, right?
- 1:20:59Yeah. He, the male lead, Kim in Q, is
- 1:21:03enthralled by her inventions and the umbrella especially.
- 1:21:06It's like, I want to meet this genius who created this umbrella
- 1:21:09that can change from being, like dark Navy to opaque with the
- 1:21:15push of a button and all this stuff.
- 1:21:16And he, he seems to understand the whimsy in her style of
- 1:21:22inventions. Yeah.
- 1:21:24It's this type of confidence from somebody else that she's
- 1:21:29never had really, that totally makes her like, fall deeper in
- 1:21:33love with him. He understands.
- 1:21:35Her. She's seen, yeah.
- 1:21:37Yeah. So the fact that they they go
- 1:21:40through all this, she, I think does she win the contest?
- 1:21:45Oh, with the ridiculous. This stupid outfit.
- 1:21:49Oh my. God, an Afro wig and fake
- 1:21:52glasses that are connected on a chain to a hanging mustache.
- 1:21:58You can't even find this shit in in spirit Halloween like the
- 1:22:01it's really strange. Oh, if we ever had a cage on a
- 1:22:05Halloween party, I think I'd. Literally that would be amazing.
- 1:22:11That's her at the Young Entrepreneur contest.
- 1:22:13Like it's so goofy. It's like it's so.
- 1:22:16And the fact that nobody like says anything.
- 1:22:18Yeah. No, that's the one.
- 1:22:20Thing that's the actual lean though is that.
- 1:22:22Where are. The people going girl, what are
- 1:22:25you doing all? The other inventors are complete
- 1:22:27like no one else is in fancy dress, right?
- 1:22:29Doesn't that and I Yeah, nobody bats an eye.
- 1:22:32Nobody. That was even a number one
- 1:22:34question for her. I'd come after her and be like,
- 1:22:36OK, yeah, I see your heart lamps, girl.
- 1:22:38What the fuck is going on? Why are you dressed like this?
- 1:22:41Yeah, hilarious. It's just Oh my God.
- 1:22:47So anyway, she 'cause I go through this contest thing.
- 1:22:50Gia confronts the ex the the Professor Pekin who she goes.
- 1:22:56Did you send me in there knowing he's allergic to humans and so
- 1:22:59there was this whole falling out.
- 1:23:01They get a call from the doctor saying you can't tell her the
- 1:23:04truth. He's going to kill her and die.
- 1:23:07Decide to reset man. He puts his mother's necklace
- 1:23:13around her neck and hugs her and confesses, I love you.
- 1:23:21She's crying. They're hugging so he can't see
- 1:23:23her face. She's crying.
- 1:23:25And she says every moment, every single moment I spent with you
- 1:23:28made me happy. And then he ends up pressing the
- 1:23:33reset button. Look here.
- 1:23:37There's just no reason for this level like angst in this small
- 1:23:43time you come and nobody watch. You know what it is?
- 1:23:47Yeah, absolutely. Like the doctor can be like,
- 1:23:49don't tell him now let's get him in to the hospital and have all
- 1:23:54of the possible interventions or like a comfortable environment.
- 1:23:57And then then you can tell him like, why the whole charade and
- 1:24:01like, like come. On it's very K drama
- 1:24:05unreasonable. It's so I love it.
- 1:24:07It has to be it. Has to be that way.
- 1:24:10It has to be. There's so many almost run
- 1:24:13insurance in the next couple of episodes it's beyond the pale.
- 1:24:17Like honestly they should have run into each other like 20
- 1:24:19times. I think episode 20 ends with
- 1:24:22them face to face on the train because they're taking the same
- 1:24:25train. That is another favorite scene
- 1:24:28of mine. Listen.
- 1:24:30Talk to me about it, Sarah. I clipped it for a real because
- 1:24:33I love replaying it again and again, but I what I love about
- 1:24:37it is it just shows what amazing actors they are.
- 1:24:39There is about like 30 seconds where there is basically no
- 1:24:43dialogue between them at all. So it's all in their eyes, it's
- 1:24:47all in their reactions to each other.
- 1:24:50And he basically, he sits down on the train, She's sitting
- 1:24:53there reading a book and he looks at her, then does a double
- 1:24:56take. And then he's just like, what's
- 1:24:59happening? And she looks up, thinks fuck,
- 1:25:02and then like looks down again. And she decides in that moment
- 1:25:06she's just going to style it out, right?
- 1:25:07She's going to pretend that she does not know him.
- 1:25:09And but like her body language is is showing that, you know,
- 1:25:14she's adjusted it, it just there's no dialogue, but it's
- 1:25:17just amazing, so powerful, the scene and your heart is with
- 1:25:21both of them. And I think that's another
- 1:25:22genius of this drama is that at all times, you know exactly how
- 1:25:27he's feeling and you know exactly how she's feeling.
- 1:25:30Even when he's angry with her, you're just like, but you know,
- 1:25:33she's doing this because of this.
- 1:25:35And then, you know, and like, don't be angry with him because
- 1:25:38he feels really betrayed because of that, you know?
- 1:25:40And it's just, it's so well done.
- 1:25:43And like the characterization and their emotions and why they
- 1:25:47feel the way they do in every given moment is really, really
- 1:25:49clear. And it just makes it even more
- 1:25:51heart wrenching because you just know how hard it is for both of
- 1:25:55them. Yeah.
- 1:25:55Yeah, exactly, man. He starts sticking to her on
- 1:25:59this island. He was like, forget about it.
- 1:26:01I'm not going to go to this signing of a contract thing that
- 1:26:05he was supposed to go to. He's like, I got somewhere to
- 1:26:07be, I gotta go see about a girl. So he sticks with her on this
- 1:26:12island. He's basically stalking her,
- 1:26:15which don't do that fellas. Any fellas?
- 1:26:17That are listening, she doesn't really know yet, she said.
- 1:26:20She doesn't know yet. Don't do that.
- 1:26:22Yeah. Episode 23 and 24, we got this,
- 1:26:26like, forced proximity thing because they're trapped in a
- 1:26:28warehouse together. Really sweet.
- 1:26:30Because he tells her the story of friend Ben.
- 1:26:35Come on now. Come on now.
- 1:26:38The reveal though, that he thought, oh, she's just the
- 1:26:42model, you know, you get pie and the ex.
- 1:26:46Professor Race. To the islands to try to damage
- 1:26:51control and they're about to take him off the island.
- 1:26:55It was going to end like the best case scenario for everybody
- 1:26:58because the truth wasn't revealed.
- 1:27:00But he heads back to the beach and she's got the necklace, his
- 1:27:05mother's necklace that he put on AG3, and he loses it.
- 1:27:10His full meltdown, an entire episode that puts him in
- 1:27:14critical condition. We've got hazmat suits and
- 1:27:17everything. It is really crazy, but he makes
- 1:27:21it out. He makes it out of the woods
- 1:27:23medically. What do you think of the
- 1:27:26fallout? Well, first of all, can I just
- 1:27:30say again, you saw her is amazing in that beach scene.
- 1:27:33That is my favorite scene of the drama match.
- 1:27:35I I cannot forget that. He he, he gets on the beach,
- 1:27:39he's so excited to see her. He's so happy he's found her
- 1:27:42because he's still racing around the village to look for her.
- 1:27:44She's really sad because she's like, this is it.
- 1:27:47He's going to get taken away. And this is like the final
- 1:27:49goodbye. I'm not going to see him again.
- 1:27:51I've got my life to lead and And that's it.
- 1:27:54You know, they have their little time in the warehouse.
- 1:27:57I know how special I am to him. And that's all I'm getting.
- 1:28:00And that's going to be fun. And so she's wiping away tears.
- 1:28:02She gets up, she sees him. He's super happy to see her.
- 1:28:06And then he spots the necklace. And then she spots that.
- 1:28:09She spots the necklace and his face.
- 1:28:11He just goes, yeah, he goes to about 567 different emotions and
- 1:28:16his, again, no dialogue, right? No speech.
- 1:28:19It's all in his eyes. It's all in his back.
- 1:28:22No dialogue. He's such an amazing.
- 1:28:24And This is why both Sarah and I were like, we haven't seen
- 1:28:28anything else. He's doing, but we sound is.
- 1:28:35The best It's a master class. Like he's really emotive.
- 1:28:38Oh, so, so much. I love it.
- 1:28:40I love it. I love that scene and the
- 1:28:44reaction that he has after Yeah, to being lied to.
- 1:28:49I think it's completely warranted.
- 1:28:51Absolutely. I think on 1st watch I was a
- 1:28:53little like man he's so harsh, why is?
- 1:28:55He so harsh, he's. Making him food, yeah, he breaks
- 1:28:59the like glass thing and then she gets cut and all this stuff
- 1:29:02and he's just like having a tantrum.
- 1:29:04And on 2nd watch I'm like, let the man have his tantrum because
- 1:29:08I would have gone feral on all their asses.
- 1:29:12Yeah. I sure agree.
- 1:29:14Because he says a line that, again, I've missed the first
- 1:29:17time around. But he says something like every
- 1:29:20one of the memories that you and I have now is despicable to me.
- 1:29:25And you're just like, yeah, God. And he just relived them in the
- 1:29:28warehouse, right? So we know actually how special
- 1:29:31they were to him. And now she has spoiled every
- 1:29:34single one of those because it was all a lie.
- 1:29:37And he just that sense of betrayal, which is like an old
- 1:29:41mood anyway, It's just immense, right?
- 1:29:44So you're just like, oh, and then her face, because she's
- 1:29:47just, she's tried all along. She's been trying to, like,
- 1:29:50protect him. It's been trying to do the right
- 1:29:53thing for so long and getting thwarted by, you know, his
- 1:29:57illness and people saying like, no, we can't whatever for these
- 1:30:01K drama ease circumstances for reasons, really for reasons.
- 1:30:06Basically. I hated when he said you're not
- 1:30:09much of a human. Is that why you made a great
- 1:30:11robot? Yeah.
- 1:30:14Yeah. I'll see myself out 27 through
- 1:30:1928. We get their reconciliation.
- 1:30:22He signals to her that they both basically were looking at the
- 1:30:26news and they knew a meteor shower was going to happen that
- 1:30:29night. And he touches the heart lamp
- 1:30:32and hers lights up and she's like, Oh my God, it's the bad
- 1:30:34signal. It's a it's a beautiful evening
- 1:30:43because they do reconcile. And then he's still like, no,
- 1:30:47but we really can't be together anyway.
- 1:30:52But it's all for not it's an evening where she reveals she's
- 1:30:55president Joe that go between that gets people she like waits
- 1:30:59in line and stuff for folks. And it's it's cute.
- 1:31:03You get the return of the fart. He's like, what about the fart?
- 1:31:06Cuz he wants like clarification on all these things that are
- 1:31:09bizarre. I just love it like it's a
- 1:31:12really light evening. And at the end of it, she says
- 1:31:16that she loves him just as he's walking away and he just turns
- 1:31:20around and kisses her right there.
- 1:31:21And I'm like. Oh, I love that.
- 1:31:26And actually, what I really love about it is that actually it's
- 1:31:28quite rare in K dramas for the leads to come together after the
- 1:31:33big thing has happened. And like, the misunderstandings
- 1:31:36have begun to be understood and communicated properly and that
- 1:31:41they all rehash everything. Because normally in a drama,
- 1:31:44like we know everything that happens because we're the
- 1:31:46viewers, but the characters don't come together and talk
- 1:31:48about it and go, well, what about that time when you were a
- 1:31:51total jerk to me? What happened there?
- 1:31:54Like why you? Guess slided me over.
- 1:31:57She blames him for it and she was like going the really food
- 1:32:02poisoning. They took it all through.
- 1:32:04I love that. No, that's so, that's so right,
- 1:32:06because I feel like, you know, I, there are specific dramas
- 1:32:09that I love that a lot of people's nitpicks about them is
- 1:32:14like, we didn't get that reconciliation talk, but this,
- 1:32:18you know, this drama really does that well, like where we get
- 1:32:22that satisfaction of emotional processing and.
- 1:32:26Closure. Yeah.
- 1:32:28I agree, she says to him. And I thought this was so
- 1:32:31romantic. She says.
- 1:32:32The person who gave me the love I always yearned for was you.
- 1:32:35And so the person I missed each and every day, that was you.
- 1:32:39It's not that I'm someone you need.
- 1:32:41I'm the one who needs you so much because you are the person
- 1:32:44I've been looking for all this time.
- 1:32:47That one person I've been waiting for.
- 1:32:48And I'm like, if that is not the most romantic thing, she really
- 1:32:52sold it. I thought it was so precious,
- 1:32:55their reconciliation and how he was like, you know what?
- 1:32:59We really can't still be together.
- 1:33:00And she was like, no, no, no, you don't understand.
- 1:33:03I need you now. You're the one.
- 1:33:08We don't have a you're the one moment.
- 1:33:10I feel like that's pretty rare in K dramas nowadays to be like
- 1:33:13no no no for real you you're it. Yeah.
- 1:33:17And I love that it's like it's again, this drama is so good at
- 1:33:21closing the loops because they talked about, you know, you just
- 1:33:24need that one person in your life who who sees you or
- 1:33:28whatever when when she was talking about her heart balls or
- 1:33:30whatever earlier on in the drama.
- 1:33:32It's just there's like they drop all of these things along the
- 1:33:37way. And then complete everything
- 1:33:40like the loops are on everything get closed, even the fart it's.
- 1:33:44Amazing. It's so true as well.
- 1:33:47And you mentioned about Michael Joe as well, because I've
- 1:33:49forgotten like one other scene that I've really loved that made
- 1:33:52me just ugly cry was again, when they were when she was kind of
- 1:33:56trying to be out of his life. And she's so exhausted from all
- 1:34:00of this trauma, but she doesn't decay drama.
- 1:34:02We end up in the hospital when the drip because that's what you
- 1:34:04do, right? And then, yeah, defamation.
- 1:34:09Anyway. So then she's he rings her, but
- 1:34:11on the Madam Joe line and says, like, Hey, Madam Joe.
- 1:34:15Soon as he she hears his voice, she knows who it is.
- 1:34:18And she's like breaking down because she misses him so much.
- 1:34:22But then she's still pretending to be her alter ego, you know,
- 1:34:25he says, oh, well, I had a friend, but they had to go very
- 1:34:28far away. And then she's just like,
- 1:34:30absolutely. Because he's talking about her
- 1:34:35and and she's still having. She's like, I'm just not, I'm
- 1:34:37not in that business anymore. OK, bye.
- 1:34:39She puts the phone down and then after like, oh, so
- 1:34:44heartbreaking. But then she comes.
- 1:34:45It's heartbreaking. But then she comes slow and
- 1:34:47she's like, that was me too, you know?
- 1:34:49Yeah, and she tells him that she's President Joe.
- 1:34:53Or CEO Joe. Yeah, I love that in that
- 1:34:57moment, he says. My best friend went far away or
- 1:35:00something. And not like the woman I love.
- 1:35:03Yeah, or something like I love that, that she's a.
- 1:35:07Friend. Yeah.
- 1:35:08Right through through the entire thing.
- 1:35:10It's like the, the, the connection that is being
- 1:35:13emphasized is like their minds and their souls and their hearts
- 1:35:18meet. And this is not just an
- 1:35:20attraction thing at all. Not in anyway.
- 1:35:24It's like really they are soul mates and that's the part that
- 1:35:28they recognize in each other. And like they they see that the
- 1:35:32other one sees, you know? Yeah.
- 1:35:35That's a sweep. Yeah, I do 3 escapes because it
- 1:35:38was a whole. Listen, the one thing I will say
- 1:35:41about the show is I do not give a shit about the.
- 1:35:44Corporate politics and the. The takeover and oh, we're going
- 1:35:48to call a board meeting because we're going to try and get Kim
- 1:35:50in Q out of his training position.
- 1:35:52I like, I don't, I don't care. I don't care about any of that.
- 1:35:56Audi 3 is is in the crosshairs. She escapes from this nefarious
- 1:36:02group that wants to take her apart.
- 1:36:04She's like first AI robot. And they want her to be a
- 1:36:09military robot, the world's most dangerous weapon.
- 1:36:11And I'm like, well, that's, you know, probably along the lines
- 1:36:15of if this were made today, she would be like a defense robot or
- 1:36:21so. I don't know.
- 1:36:22Yeah, it just just reminded me of that non Korean actor that
- 1:36:26like it's like one of the worst delivered lines ever.
- 1:36:29Oh my goodness, what the believe that one?
- 1:36:33I need to look him up because he's also in other K drama.
- 1:36:37He's in Mr. Sunshine and he actually does a good job.
- 1:36:41He's like the Colonel who's the boss of EB Hans character.
- 1:36:45Or is he in that? Is he in the sunshine as well?
- 1:36:48Yeah, I thought. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:50He's also in Squid Game. He's one of the VIPs in Squid
- 1:36:53Game, yeah. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:36:55I feel like a lot of these non Korean actors, I get put in a
- 1:36:59really bad spot in terms of like how they're directed in a scene
- 1:37:02because OK, that that man absolutely knows how to curse,
- 1:37:08but he was not allowed to curse naturally.
- 1:37:11There's no way that man does not know how to curse.
- 1:37:14Like, and the fact that he says AG3 instead of AG 3, because
- 1:37:21that's the, you know, that's the like, if you know, if you see
- 1:37:25the name of the robot written down, it's AG3, right?
- 1:37:28But he says AG3. He says AG. 3IN.
- 1:37:32The. Korean style.
- 1:37:34Exactly, exactly. So you're.
- 1:37:36Like, oh wow, he's like really getting directed about exactly
- 1:37:40how. To do this and it's.
- 1:37:42The wrong direction. So this actor that we're
- 1:37:45referring to is John D Michaels, and he has been in quite a few K
- 1:37:52dramas. I Am Not a Robot was his first K
- 1:37:56Then he followed that up with Chicago Typewriter.
- 1:37:59Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Then Mr. Sunshine.
- 1:38:02Then he was in an episode of Designated Survivor, 60 days.
- 1:38:07He was in her private life. Hot Stove Leak.
- 1:38:10He was an American Baseball scouts.
- 1:38:12That's funny. I just watched Hot Stove Leak
- 1:38:14this year. There's an episode on it.
- 1:38:16Voice 4 The spies who love me. Squid Game.
- 1:38:19He's avip in squid game. Narco Saints.
- 1:38:21He's the blue team director, whatever that means.
- 1:38:25Love and contract. He was John Brown in episodes
- 1:38:28three and four. He has seen so many K dramas as
- 1:38:35well as movies. He was in Peninsula as a U.S.
- 1:38:39military officer. That is the sequel to Train to
- 1:38:43Pusan or the OK. I never saw that one that also
- 1:38:48stars Kang Donguan. Yes, from Tempest has proper
- 1:38:53American actors, like ones that actually.
- 1:38:56Josh Ho is in it. And I was like.
- 1:38:58Yeah, Jonathan, make it. But the American president
- 1:39:01actually sounds like he could be an American president.
- 1:39:03Like more than more than your actual American president.
- 1:39:05It's like it's. It's going to set a standard.
- 1:39:07I'm hoping that it sets a standard because Jon D Michaels
- 1:39:11has been holding up the the white boy in AK drama role for
- 1:39:18almost a decade. More than a decade.
- 1:39:21Yeah, probably. I'm wondering if there's stuff
- 1:39:24that he's not credited for an Asian woman.
- 1:39:27Sorry. That is funny.
- 1:39:29Great tangent. Great.
- 1:39:30I love that. That's the kind of stuff that I
- 1:39:32love to, like, look into. OK so we're almost to the end of
- 1:39:37the show because the one thing that I want to talk about is one
- 1:39:41of the best kiss scenes in K drama period.
- 1:39:46How do you guys feel about the kitchen kiss scene in episode
- 1:39:4930? I think.
- 1:39:50It was surprisingly hot because it's not surprisingly.
- 1:39:55Hot. It's such a.
- 1:39:56Sweet K drama, you know, and I think like it's early on in my
- 1:40:00viewing, but I've I've watched it.
- 1:40:01I mean, I started with Chloe, right.
- 1:40:02I know how chase these shows are.
- 1:40:04So it you know, I was, I was just expecting just the normal
- 1:40:09kind of K drama ROM com type kissing, but this was like it
- 1:40:13went on for a while. And it was surprisingly hot.
- 1:40:17It was really good. I'm not crazy like I remember
- 1:40:21this coming on my screen when I first watched it very close to
- 1:40:25when it had aired and I was like what the fuck this is this is
- 1:40:31out of bounds and I loved it. I have said ever since then this
- 1:40:37is one of the best K drama kisses and I think it holds up
- 1:40:42tremendously. It's so steamy.
- 1:40:45Yeah. So we kind of hit the end where,
- 1:40:47you know, they resolve everything.
- 1:40:49They get our G3 back. She had escape.
- 1:40:51Oh, she had no GPS. They had shut off the GPS.
- 1:40:55Just wandering around, having these adventures, taking the bus
- 1:41:00and stuff like that. It's cute.
- 1:41:02It just, it's, you know, it's so easy going.
- 1:41:05It's such an easy watch. You don't have to turn on your
- 1:41:07brain really. You get the two year time jump
- 1:41:10and yeah, it ends on a happy ending.
- 1:41:15Do you guys have anything else you'd love to add about I'm Not
- 1:41:18a Robot? So I think I said at the start,
- 1:41:21I wanted to talk about the writer because I feel like she
- 1:41:25never got recognition in the way that GR did, never got
- 1:41:29recognition for her inventions. She never got the recognition
- 1:41:33that this was such a great drama and it was so well written.
- 1:41:37It's such a great drama because she did such a great job with
- 1:41:40the screen writing and she did such a great job with their
- 1:41:43dialogue and the themes that she worked through and just making
- 1:41:47this whole preposterous setup work, you know?
- 1:41:51And I feel like because it did so badly in Korea domestically,
- 1:41:57that that's the last show she wrote.
- 1:41:59That's the last drama show she wrote, or that that's the last
- 1:42:03drama show that she wrote that got produced.
- 1:42:05And I feel, and every now and then I feel like I want to write
- 1:42:10her a letter and I want to tell her like, like internationally
- 1:42:14there are some people who'd love this drama and would love for
- 1:42:20her to write another. Because I feel like she didn't
- 1:42:23have a commune to in her life to tell her actually you are
- 1:42:26amazing and you are really skilled at this and you should
- 1:42:31carry on pursuing this as your life's project because you are
- 1:42:35great. So that was my little state kind
- 1:42:38of thing for that. Kim Song me name?
- 1:42:41Yes please. Right.
- 1:42:43You're amazing, We loved it. Yeah, that was really sweet.
- 1:42:48Yeah. Message to Kim Song.
- 1:42:49Me. Yeah.
- 1:42:51Do it again please. Yes, please take up the pen once
- 1:42:55again. So that's it.
- 1:42:59Like we've kind of come to the end of the show and our thoughts
- 1:43:03about it. Obviously, we really, really
- 1:43:04enjoyed it. We have some little things here
- 1:43:07and there that we can change it, but it's really not affecting
- 1:43:12our rating if at all. So really positive experience.
- 1:43:16Thank you so much for both of you guys for watching the show
- 1:43:20once again, for immersing yourselves in I'm Not a Robot.
- 1:43:24Just going on this cute little ROM com journey to closeout
